Historical reenactment of a military drill at St.John’s Cavalier (close to Courve Port) Vittoriosa (Birgu) The event portrays an authentic event that took place regularly inside important military fortifications in Malta & Gozo. The re-enactment portrays the inspection of the St.John’s Cavalier in the town of Birgu and its garrison by the Grand Balliff of the Order of the Knights of St.John in charge of Military affairs. Malta

Sparkling sunshine, crystal clear waters and a unique history waiting to be discovered – this is Malta The Maltese archipelago consists of three main islands – Gozo, Comino and Malta – and several small islets. Millions of years ago, the Maltese Islands were the elevated part of a mass of land extending southwards from nearby Sicily. This continental shelf was submerged when the sea level rose during the inter-glacial period, leaving the land tips exposed in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. The islands are situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, between Europe and Africa. Control of Malta meant control of the Mediterranean and Malta was an ideal stepping stone from one continent to the other. It is therefore no wonder that conquerors down the ages have left their mark on the islands: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, the Knights of St John, the French and the British, who held the islands until 1964, when Malta finally became independent.

Climate: Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and very hot summers. Temperatures in summer can go up to 40°C and more and the winters are very mild. The total annual rainfall, which occurs mainly between October and February, averages around 500 mm.

Geography The Maltese archipelago consists of three inhabited islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, and two other uninhabited islands. They lie in the middle of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 230km north of North Africa.

The total area is 316 square km (Malta 246, Gozo 67, and Comino 2.7).

Government Malta is a republic, the parliamentary system and public administration is closely modelled on the Westminster system. The House of Representatives is comprised of 65 Members of Parliament.

Language Maltese, which is of Semitic origin, is the official language. However, English is spoken by the majority of the population and Italian is also widely spoken, as is French and German.

Population The total population of Malta is around 400,000, of whom 29,000 live on Gozo.

Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with an average population density of 1,150 people per sq km.

Religion The majority of the Maltese are Roman Catholic, but other religious denominations are also represented.

El archipiélago maltés consta de tres islas principales (Gozo, Comino y Malta) y varios islotes. GEOGRAFÍA. El archipiélago maltés está formado por tres islas habitadas, Malta, Gozo y Comino, y otras dos islas deshabitadas.

Están situadas en el centro del Mediterráneo, Malta a 93 kilómetros al sur de Sicilia y a 230 kilómetros al norte de África del Norte. La superficie total es de 316 kilómetros cuadrados (Malta 246, Gozo 67 y Comino 2,7).

GOBIERNO.

Malta es una república, el sistema parlamentario y la administración pública imitan el Sistema Parlamentario Británico. La Cámara de los Diputados está compuesta por 65 miembros del Parlamento.

IDIOMA.

El idioma oficial es el maltés, el cual es de origen semítico. Sin embargo el inglés es hablado por la mayoría de la población, incluso el italiano está extendido, así como también el francés y el alemán.

POBLACIÓN.

La población total de Malta es de unos 400.000 habitantes, de los cuales 29.000 viven en Gozo. Malta es uno de los países del mundo con más densidad de población, con una densidad de población media de 1.150 personas por kilómetro cuadrado.

RELIGIÓN

La mayoría de los malteses son Católicos Romanos, pero otras religiones también están representadas.

Vor Millionen von Jahren waren die maltesischen Inseln der erhöhte Teil einer Landmasse südlich von Sizilien, der Meeresspiegel stieg während einer wärmeperiode sodass die Landmassen Spitze ( Malta ) sich als kleine Inselgruppe in der Mitte des Mittelmeeres zwischen Afrika und Europa bildete. Die Kontrolle über Malta bedeutete gleichzeitig die Kontrolle über das Mittelmeer. Malta war das ideale Sprungbrett zwischen den beiden Kontinenten. Daher ist es auch kein Wunder, dass Eroberer im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben. Phönizier, Karthager, Römer, Araber, Normannen, die Ritter des Johanniter Ordens mit ihren spanischen, französischen und deutschen Fürstenhäusern sind alle auf der Insel vertreten gewesen. Schliesslich nach 150 Jahren als englische Kolonie wurde Malta 1964 selbständig.

La bibliothèque nationale: Elle abrite aujourd’hui les archives de l’Ordre des Chevaliers de St Jean de Jérusalem, de Rhodes et de Malte, dit «Ordre de Malte », et celle de l’Université.

Le Centre Mediterraneen de Conference Construit par les Chevaliers à l’origine pour être un hôpital, c’est devenu en 1979 un centre de conférences.

Le Centre du Chevalier de Saint James Aujourd’hui ensemble d’ateliers de création artistique, il fut également

construit par les Chevaliers. Avec sa tour particulièrement imposante, il tenait lieu de tour de guêt et de défense aux portes de La Valette.

Nationalbibliothek beherbergt die Archive des Johaniter Ordens sowie auch die Archive der alten Universitaet Mediterranean Conference Centre war ursprünglich ein Krankenhaus des Johaniter Ordens. 1979 wurde es in ein Konferenzzentrum umgebaut.

The sleepy pace and rustic charm of this tiny, tranquil, haven are wont to induce a luxurious stupor, the right kind of medicine for those who have been deprived of harmony and tranquillity for any length of time. This is Gozo’s commercial and cultural Capital.

The Citadel, Victoria (Rabat) The Citadel is the fortified and upper most part of Victoria this enclosed fortified part of the town boasts of a cathedral, the Gozo Law courts, the old Bishop’s Palace and a small number of museums Archaeology Museum: Casa Bondi, The Citadel. The museum houses archaeological artefacts from Gozo.

Cathedral and Museum: The Citadel.

The present cathedral was constructed between 1697 and 1711.

Gozo’s National Folklore Mu­seum: The Citadel. Domestic and old industrial tools exhibited in a mediaeval house.

Old Prisons: The Citadel. Built by the Knights of St John and last used by the British.

The Natural History Museum: The Citadel.

Exhibits include a rallge of fossils, stones and other geological specimens from Gozo.

St George’s Basilica: Pjazza San Gorg.

Consecrated in 1755, the church situated in Rabat centre, is impressively covered in marble, with a bronze and gilded canopy over the altar.

Ta’ Cenc CLiffs:

Limits of Sannat (25mins walk from Sannat). A sheer precipice that drops straight into the sea below. A delightful location for bird watchers.

Qala Belvedere:

A great location on the out­skirts of the Village Qala from where one may enjoy a panoramic view of the Gozo­-CominoMalta channel.

This barren island is practically uninhabited except for a resort hotel, but is very popular with swimmers and divers. A historic watch tower built in the early 17th century once guarded its coast.

The Blue Lagoon: With its silver sandy sea bed, the sea gives the illusion of a turquoise-silvery swimming pool set in a natural ambience.

VICTORIA (RABAT)

Musée archéologique: Casa Bondi, la Citadelle. Le musée présente des expositions retraçant la vie de Gozo Cathédrale et musée: La cathédrale actuelle fut construite entre 1697 et 1711.

Musée National du Folklore e Gozo: Cette maison médiévale présente d’anciens outils domestiques et industriels.

Les anciennes prisons: construites par les Chevaliers de St Jean; elles furent utilisées en dernier par les Britanniques.

Musée d’histoire naturelle: La citadelle.

GHARB Ta’ Pinu Basilica: Eglise Ta’ Pinu – aux confins de Għarb. Cette imposante église de style néoclassique est le lieu de pèlerinage préféré des habitants de Gozo.

Għarb Folklore Museum: Musée folklorique de Għarb – Des objets de tous âges sont présentés dans une ancienne maison de style ‘‘cottage’’ au cœur du village.
