e have had a terrific year so far at the PHCC of Alabama, and we are looking forward to the remainder of 2015 with great optimism for the Association. Today I want to talk about some of the great things that are going on in education. Modern information technology is changing how we learn, and ALPHCC has been at the forefront of this revolution. In 2001, we established the first online plumbing and HVAC apprenticeship programs in the country. That tradition continues today as we have partnered with the National PHCC for an updated, comprehensive online plumbing apprentice program. ALPHCC also has two more online programs. For those who wish to be certified, or re-certified, as a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester, our online course provides instructional video, documents, and testing. I myself have used this excellent program for my own re-certification.

6

Summer 2015 • Alabama Contractor • www.alabamaphcc.org

HVAC contractors can also get their required Continuing Education credit through our website as well. For information on any of these programs, go to www. AlabamaPHCC.org today! There are also exciting developments statewide in plumbing education. The Alabama Plumbing and Gasfitters Board is spearheading an effort to bring plumbing trade education to high school students. ALPHCC is taking a leading role with the Board and partners all over the state to help make this a reality. Currently, classes are being established for Huntsville City and Madison County school districts as a pilot program. If successful, you will see these programs spread throughout Alabama. This is a breakthrough for the state, and we believe an effort like this to pass on the value and importance of trade craft to younger generations is long overdue.

How to Balance

Career ily and am F

By Kent Tan

O

ne of the difficulties that face many professionals, especially business owners, is how to balance career and family. It is easy to justify the long hours and the unending attention to your business. After all, without the business the family suffers financially. In order to ensure the family is taken care of you need to spend the time necessary to keep your business moving forward. Unfortunately, this thinking has lead to the breakup of many relationships. By failing to concentrate on how to balance career and family, the family gets sacrificed for the sake of the career. There are ways to make time for both work and family, but it starts with making your family a priority. When you do that, the other decisions you make will be made with the thought of how it will affect your family life. Learn to be More Efficient One thing you need to concentrate on is finding ways to accomplish more while you are at work. In other words, you need to work smarter, not longer. There are some steps you can take to create an environment that allows you to concentrate on your work during the work hours, and to accomplish more in that time. One step you need to take is to reduce the number of interruptions during your day. For instance, most emails do not require an immediate response. You could set aside specific times when you will handle emails and return phone calls. That way you are not constantly dropping what you are working on every time someone demands your attention. Along with that is making yourself available to everyone that wants to visit you. While an open door policy is important, you should let people know that you are to be disturbed only when necessary, and not every time someone wants to pop their head in to say hello. Once you take control of your work day and reduce the interruptions, you will be amazed at how much more work you can accomplish. Make an Appointment with Your Family You need to make sure your family is on your schedule. That means that you need to write family events in your calendar. It is best to write those events in ink so you are not tempted to change them.

Then you should get into the habit of honoring those time commitments to your family. You need to make time for your family on a daily basis. There has been a lot of talk about “quality time,” but quality time only comes when you spend a quantity of time with your family. That means that sometimes you need to make time just to hang out and be present with your family, even if there isn’t an event.

Leave Your Work at Work When you do spend time with your family you need to be sure to be completely present with them. Do not come home to be with your family, but your thoughts are still with your business. Your family will know that you are distracted, and they will resent that they do not have your attention. It may be difficult at first, but you need to practice putting your work aside when you are with your family. That is a part of making your family a priority. Concentrate on learning what is going on in their lives. Keep track of what they are interested in and work on finding ways to take part in those interests. Your family will appreciate the effort, and they will be more understanding when business emergencies do call you away from family time. Take Time for Yourself Many people ignore the importance of the need for personal time. In order to have enough emotional energy for your business and your family you need to make sure you have enough personal time to keep yourself focused. Most cases of burn-out occur because the person was worn down by all of the personal and professional demands and pressures that were put on them. To avoid that from happening to you, you should take the time to get off by yourself. This could be taking a walk at lunch, or finding time to go to the gym in the morning. That time alone will help you gather your thoughts and will give you the energy you need to handle the rest of your day. It is critical that you learn how to balance career and family demands. When things get out of balance, one or both of them will suffer, and that could lead to failures in both areas. Learn to give each one the attention it needs. Learn to better manage work-life balance, and more - at Vistage Malaysia. Member Benefits for the 21st Century

By Erica Berry

S

ince 1953, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) of Alabama has provided plumbing and HVAC professionals throughout the state with opportunities for continuing education, business development and unique industry-related services. PHCC strives to offer value to members by providing resources for leadership, networking, advocacy and training, as well as serving as a directory for Alabama preferred service providers. The association also provides a forum for sharing ideas, challenges and business solutions. “While our members are business competitors, they help each other all the time,” says Bob Mosca, who has been the executive director of PHCC of Alabama since 1993. “Our members recognize that they are a part of a mutually beneficial organization. There is a very high level of comradely and that is the philosophy of PHCC.” In order to stay abreast of industry trends and regulations, members turn to the progressive organization for business development opportunities, up-to-date information on building codes and services that help PHCC companies reduce costs, increase profits and enhance efficiency. “The association not only connects us with new clients looking for licensed, local contractors, but it also connects us with other industry leaders,” says Charlie Conklin, Sentry Heating Air Conditioning Plumbing & Generators founder and president. “Networking and talking with other contractors around the state allows us all to grow—to learn how they are bettering themselves and what issues they are facing. A little friendly competition helps us stay at the forefront of our business.” As a PHCC of Alabama member contractor for more than 60 years, Dean Plumbing Co. Inc. has had the opportunity to network with others like itself, and finds membership beneficial for business development. “PHCC offers us the opportunity for peer networking and discussing with others in the business about their problems and solutions,” shares Michael Dean, president of Dean Plumbing Co. Inc. Online Training In addition to PHCC of Alabama’s widely-used and well respected networking and hands-on training programs, it has been a pioneer in the field of online education delivery. It was the first in the nation to provide an online plumbing apprenticeship program in 2001, and since then technology has allowed for greater and more advanced programs. “Times have changed, and our business managers and owners

are from the generation where everything is done online, so providing online education programs is a major benefit for them and keeps them coming back,” says Bob. “Over the past 10 years, education has become more important, both technically and businesswise for our members. Virtual classrooms are cost-effective and convenient for people who don’t have the means to travel and need to secure their online education credits.” The association offers three online educational programs, including backflow prevention, HVAC continuing education and a plumbing apprenticeship program. In the future, the association hopes to add a virtual HVAC apprenticeship program, as well. “More than 60 percent of our members actively participate in our programs, which tells me we are succeeding in delivering what’s needed in the industry,” says Bob. “I’m big on education, so to see members take to this so enthusiastically is very inspiring and motivates our board to continually improve our online education experiences.” Member Advocacy PHCC’s membership is diverse. The organization represents contractors in plumbing and air conditioning – with roughly half working in commercial industry and half in service and repair. While the association is dedicated to helping its members secure the skilled employees they need through education and networking opportunities, PHCC of Alabama also serves as a voice for legislative and regulatory issues between operators, agencies and governing bodies. “We work directly with the state board for legislation on plumbing and heating,” says Bob. “In 2013 and 2014 we saw several improvements to outdated state legislation. These upgraded policies not only benefit our members, but they conform with business practices and environmental concerns of the 21st century, as well.” The assistance that the group provides in the state senate has been a tremendous aid to its members. Nick Tatum president of Conrad Watson Air Conditioning Inc. (CW), a member of PHCC of Alabama, notes legislative representation as one of the best benefits of membership for his company. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the work PHCC has done for us and other members,” says Nick. As the Associated Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors of Alabama approaches 65 years of service, Bob takes great pride in the organization’s accomplishments and is looking forward to implementing new online courses and initiatives to drive membership growth over the next few years.

Dean Plumbing Co. Inc. Trust in The Shield for Plumbing, Heating and Cooling

ince 1954, customers throughout Alabama have turned to the signature Dean Plumbing Co. Inc. (Dean Plumbing) shield of quality for plumbing and HVAC service. The family-owned firm has been serving Huntsville, Alabama, as a Plumbing Heating and Cooling Contractor (PHCC) member company for more than 60 years. “We deliver residential and commercial plumbing and fullservice HVAC,” shares Michael Dean, president of Dean Plumbing. “We’re known for detailed estimates and we charge by the job, not the hour. We have a robust service division as well, offering 24- hour emergency service around the clock.” Dean Plumbing first entered the greater Huntsville market in 1954, when Dean’s father, James Dean, established the company. “My father also worked for the city fire department, so as you can imagine, he really had his hands full,” tells Dean. “In 1963 he got my uncle to move here from Georgia to help him handle the work.” After finishing college, Dean came onboard on a full- time basis to help his father. “In 1983, I got my state heating, cooling and gas piping license and we’ve been doing full HVAC ever since,” recounts Dean.

visions where we did all of the utilities, but we also have strong service department for residential work,” tells Dean. “Even if new construction is slow we have something to keep us occupied and keep the bills paid.” Dean Plumbing helps residential customers prevent larger issues from forming with affordable preventative plumbing maintenance. “We do pipe and leak repairs, bathroom and kitchen remodeling, fixture replacement, tub, toilet and shower repairs, as well as water heater service,” notes Dean. Based in Huntsville, Dean Plumbing serves approximately a 60-mile radius of the city with 35 to 40 employees, give or take. “It depends on the amount of work we have going on,” shares Dean. “Lately it’s been a lot of schools, hotels and shopping centers. We do more commercial work than residential for the most part.” The company self performs nearly all of its work, occasionally subcontracting concrete cutting and insulation. “Sometimes, we’ll even do that in-house,” adds Dean. “We’ve even taken on projects where we are our own general contractor.” One such instance is the James Clemens project in Madison, Alabama. “Every major subcontractor had to be their own GC, it’s the way this $2.5 million plumbing job was bid,” tells Dean.

Strength in Diversity Today, Dean Plumbing offers a range of services from HVAC to water heater repair and drain cleaning. “One year the biggest job we did was installing storm drainage at the Huntsville International Airport,” tells Dean. “And the next year we changed out more than 300 heating units at a multifamily unit –I think that’s the key to our success; being diversified.” A diverse scope of services allows Dean Plumbing to bid on any number of area projects. “We have developed several subdi-

Rising to the challenge Back in Huntsville, Dean Plumbing has also completed the Bridge Street Town Shopping Center, a $1.8 million contract encompassing all of the main plumbing and utilities. “We frequently work with the University of Alabama at Huntsville,” shares Dean. “The most memorable project we tackled at the university was a science and laboratory building with miles and miles of various gas piping. It was one of the most rewarding jobs we’ve ever completed because of all the complex piping.” www.alabamaphcc.org • Alabama Contractor • Summer 2015

It’s this ability to rise to meet a range of plumbing and HVAC challenges that keep customers throughout Huntsville and beyond calling on Dean Plumbing. “We certainly feel the pressure of more out of state, larger companies saturating the market, but we have customers that count on us; that know we’re going to be dependable and serve them – that’s what’s most rewarding to me,” says Dean. “We don’t have to solicit a lot of new business because every customer we make, we keep. We operate on repeat business and many referrals.” Strong customer base or not, Dean Plumbing isn’t immune to competition and the changes taking place in the industry. Fortunately, Dean says the company is not alone. As a PHCC member contractor, Dean Plumbing has the opportunity to network with others like itself. “PHCC offers us the opportunity for peer networking and discussing with others in the business about their problems and solutions,” says Dean. As the regional economy continues to improve Dean says he sees more major projects down the pipeline. “Major companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing, as well as Marshall Space Flight Center will keep the economy moving strong in this area,” he tells. “They’re getting ready to send another manned shuttle to the space station and that’s a driving force in this area. There’s a need for plumbing directly and indirectly.” The outlook in the coming years is promising for the familyowned company. For more than 60 years, commercial and residential customers have trusted the Dean Plumbing Co. Inc. shield for the quality plumbing and HVAC guarantee.

And we have the extensive product line to prove it.

onrad Watson Air Conditioning Inc. (CW) provides HVAC service and installation and is also full of southern charm. “The company started April 1, 1973,” details Nick Tatum, current president of CW. “Conrad Watson and his wife Diane initially started the business out of their home.” Through the assistance of friends, Conrad and Diane were able to grow the business and eventually became a Carrier dealer. Tatum, who started with the company in 1987, says that the company began at just the right time and saw success soon after it started. Commercial and residential The company works in many different avenues, including residential, commercial, industrial and refrigeration work. “Anything concerning air conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation, we’re involved in,” explains Tatum. CW’s services include heating, cooling, indoor air quality, thermostats and zoning. In the last 10 years, CW has gone from

performing primarily residential work to mostly commercial work. “Ten years ago we were at about 60 percent residential work and 30 percent commercial and now the company does between 65 percent and 70 percent commercial.” The housing market was affected by the economic downfall in recent years and that change really affected the company’s business and client base. Tatum explains that CW had to adapt to the economy in order to grow and succeed. Working in the HVAC industry, CW provides vital materials to its customers and the company’s project list illustrates the diversity of clients that it serves. “In 2014, we did a remodel and retrofit on a state department of transportation building in Troy, Ala., we went in and took out the boiler and the chiller,” Tatum states. “We Continued from page 18

Sentry Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Generators Birmingham’s HVAC Leader

S

entry Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Generators (Sentry) has been serving Birmingham, Alabama, and the surrounding community since 1987. Sentry offers excellent service, repairs and replacement for its residential, commercial and industrial clients, as well as design-build commercial and replacement work. Charlie Conklin, founder and president, has always had a knack as a craftsman. In 1971 Charlie began his career in the construction industry, but when the home construction market hit a downturn in the summer of 1974, he was introduced to an opportunity to perform electrical maintenance work at a new high- rise building in the area. While getting his feet wet in the electrical service industry, Charlie went back to school and eventually opened what now — nearly 40 years later — is one of the leading heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing companies in central Alabama. In 1992, Sentry added generators to its list of services provided. “Due to several ice storms during the winter and severe weather in the spring and late summer, the area is always subjected to, we added generators,” Charlie says. “Generators are now common for homes and businesses in this area.” Michael Tortomase, vice president and general manager, joined the Sentry team in 2003, bringing 28 years in the plumbing business. Sentry’s plumbing service offers the same award-winning expertise and reliability that Birmingham homeowners have come to trust from Sentry. Charlie attributes the company’s continued success to its dedication to quality service and rigorous training of its employees. Sentry now employs 43 people, as well as Charlie’s daughter, who manages service contract agreements and the information systems of the business.

Quality care and service Sentry offers a wide array of services to the industrial, residential and commercial markets and its clients span the gamut—from automotive retailers to non-profit organizations. The company has a history of providing quality service and its logo, the royal blue shield emblazoned with Comfort Guard, is a symbol and reminder of Sentry’s commitment to customer satisfaction. “Our goal is to always provide our clients with the most efficient system and services possible and to make sure it is completed on time and within budget,” says Charlie. “No matter what the task, we always take the time to do every job right the first time, ensuring that our customers are happy for years to come.” As a service and design-build contractor, Sentry is equipped to design any type of energy-efficient indoor comfort system, whether for new construction or an existing building that has outgrown its capacity or just needs updating. When it comes to installing and servicing heating and cooling systems, Sentry uses only top of the line products and ensures quality work by continually educating its team in HVAC techniques and products. “We’re dedicated to taking green initiatives like Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems [VRF],” says Charlie. “There are so many new technologies to take advantage of that will help us provide energy efficient and economical solutions to our clients while also preserving the environment. It’s an important step for everyone in this industry, and across the board, to take.” Sentry also specializes in indoor air quality. With new vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) versus traditional automotive fuels, Sentry has entered a relatively new niche of work for the automotive industry: ventilation and IAQ for CNG. The company began work at a CNG branch facility for national material hauler company Evergreen, located in Calera, Alabama,

Most recently, the company was awarded the 2013 Angie’s List Super Service Award, which is given exclusively to the top five percent of service companies who have achieved and maintained a superior service rating on Angie’s List throughout the year. spend a lot less on education, than their office-bound counterparts— but they don’t teach you that in schools. Education is important, but what is more important is enjoying what you do.” As a solution, Charlie suggests companies and related associations work in tandem with local high school guidance counselors to educate students on technical related career paths. Charlie not only believes in this idea, but leads by example by offering local students, who show promise and interest in pursuing HVAC, plumbing and electrical careers, scholarships under the caveat that school is attended, maintain a B average and work for Sentry on a full or part time basis. “The service industry is suffering, so if we can find students who are really interested in becoming indoor comfort system specialists, electricians, gas fitters and plumbers, they are golden,” says Charlie. “By putting the effort in and recruiting employees right out of high school, we can have a hand in ensuring they receive the proper training to do the kind of quality work Sentry and our customers expect from our team members.” With very little employee turnover, repeat clientele and an outlook for sustainable growth, Sentry Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Generators will remain a family-owned leader in the Alabama HVAC, generator and plumbing marketplace for years to come.

Furthermore, Sentry is also an active member of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Planning for the future Sentry has faced many industry challenges throughout its 30 years in business, but as higher education has taken priority over technical schools in the past decade, one issue has become more prevalent: finding qualified artisans. The trend, which started nearly 10 years ago, is now coming to a head and the pool of qualified, trained and educated individuals to fill trade positions is dwindling. “It’s tough to get quality people who are truly invested and interested in the trade,” says Charlie. “Many young people feel pressured to attend a traditional four year college and aren’t aware of the opportunities that are available in the HVAC and plumbing industries. In reality, HVAC service techs and plumbers typically make just as much, and have as many benefits and 16

The Sinking of the Titanic: An Analogy of Failed Leadership The Sinking of the Titanic Provides Lessons for Leaders

By Gregory P. Smith

We have struck iceberg … sinking fast … come to our assistance.” On a cold evening in 1912 that message came blistering across the airwaves. Before they tapped the last bit of Morse code, those words became the epitaph over the lives of the 1,200 people lost on the Titanic. The ship was doomed as it slowly sank into its watery grave. Why did the largest, most advanced ship of its time sink? Those of us who study history or remember the movie may know why. It wasn’t the iceberg that caused the disaster. It is clear in my mind the real cause was failed leadership. Leadership is Responsible — Leadership is responsible for everything the organization does or fails to do. Leadership is more than a wooden figurehead. A leader is not a position, job title, or in this case, the captain of the ship. Leadership is not about power, ego or pride. Leadership is ever-present, touching, motivating, talking, checking and removing barriers, training, preparing, breathing and moving about. The Titanic’s ill-fated voyage was Captain E.J. Smith’s retirement trip. He was headed for the easy life. All he had to do was get to New York. God only knows why he ignored the facts, why he disregarded seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships. The Titanic still rests on the bottom of the ocean, but we can resurrect the truth and apply a few lessons learned to help us become better leaders.

The Biggest Is Not the Best — Today’s businesses must change course quickly. It took over 30 seconds before the Titanic turned away from the iceberg, but by then it was too late. The larger an organization becomes, the greater its inflexibility. The more difficult and cumbersome it is to steer, to direct and to change course. Large businesses soon grow into huge bureaucracies where rules, regulations, policies, procedures and “I need permission to make a decision” become the norm. Rank Has Its Privileges? — Ranking is good for command and control, but not good for change and innovation. Ranking people limits their potential. Today, businesses rank and classify people — sometimes unintentionally. Whether it is reserved parking spaces for the privileged or being categorized as blue collar, white collar, temporary, part-time, those with cubicles or those with offices, the results are the same. Clear the lines between the classes and make everyone feel they are rowing in the same direction, for the same purpose. In a disaster, everyone is equal. The Truth Changes — The Titanic was unsinkable, so they thought. The ship designers were so confident in their ship they only had enough lifeboats for half the passengers. The thinking that made us successful yesterday will cause us to fail tomorrow. Our unlearning curve must be greater than our learning curve if we are going to succeed. www.alabamaphcc.org • Alabama Contractor • Summer 2015

Technology Makes a Poor Substitute for Authentic Leadership — When technology fails, leadership must prevail. Years before the Titanic’s voyage Captain Smith said, “I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.” Many businesses today have placed the wrong people in charge. They are not leaders, but managers. So when disaster strikes, who is going to step up and lead? Or will your technology cause you to shipwreck and pull you under?

retrofitted the building and each room has its own evaporator that hangs in the middle of the room from the ceiling and each room has its own thermostat.” CW retrofitted Trustmark National Bank, as well. “We were able to cut their operating costs, as far as utility bills, down about 47 percent,” details Tatum. The company was able to provide the bank with tremendous savings through its expertise. CW really enjoys the larger projects when the company can sit with the client and illustrate the energy savings or the VRF system verses the conventional type of systems. “The VRF system costs about 40 percent more than the conventional systems up front but there is a six- to seven-year payback period on the VRF,” says Tatum. The VRF system is more costly of the two; however, the pay back and the benefits of the system far outweigh the more conventional options.

Leadership is About Training and Development — As the stern of the Titanic lifted out of the water, the crew and passengers struggled with the lifeboats. There had been no drills, no rehearsals, and the crew stood unfamiliar with their responsibilities. The boats were improperly loaded and only one went back to try to recover survivors. A good leader helps people improve their skills so they can become more productive. What Lies Below Is More Destructive than What Is On Top — The greatest dangers lie unseen below the surface. That night in 1912 the water was smooth like glass — and deceptively dangerous. The iceberg lurked below. Like steel fangs, it tore at the rivets along 300 feet of the Titanic’s hull. Those below, the crew and steerage, felt and saw the damage first. Like a gasping breath, the steam billowed above as chaos reigned below. Then and now, those who know what’s wrong with your “ship” are those below decks. Those people on the frontline usually have the best ideas and solutions to your problems. Consider asking them for their ideas and suggestions before catastrophe strikes. Leadership Looks Beyond the Horizon — A good “Captain” is constantly on the lookout for shifting trends, submerged rocks, storms and icebergs. Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton identified and met a need while other retailers did not. Apple saw the need for the iPod while others were still happy with CD players. The vision of the Sony Walkman existed in Akio Morita’s mind well before it entered the mind of the competition. Get the picture? Be on the lookout, scanning the horizon for the next wave of change instead of waiting for it to hit you in the face. Future plans Tatum is looking forward to the future with Carrier. “Carrier is coming out with a five-speed inverter heat pump system, I’m looking forward to that and I think it’s going to be really good for the economy,” he details. The systems operate in a unique way. “Consider a building needs 100 tons of air conditioning at 95 degrees outside air on an 80 degree day it may require 70 tons and that is what the system will deliver,” Tatum weighs. The higher the temperature, the more load a customer will get from the system, the lower the temperature the lower the load. That’s where the savings occur with the new system, it comes equipped with an inverter driven compressor making it load-sensitive. PHCC proud As a member of the PHCC, CW is grateful for the opportunities granted as members of the group. “They work with the legislature, which is beneficial for us and they also help us in so many other areas,” says Tatum. The work that PHCC does, as well as the assistance that the group provides in the state senate, has also been a tremendous aid to the company. “It’s been one of the best benefits, to be honest with you,” Tatum continues. Even though the members of PHCC work in the same industry, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of competition among them. “I don’t consider them the competition and I try to have a good relationship with all of them,” continues Tatum. There are a lot of ways that a company can measure its success, CW measures its success by the work that is being completed and in its efforts to go the extra step to ensure everything is done professionally. The employees have also become an important part of the company for Tatum. “I enjoy seeing my employees happy and watching them succeed,” he says. As a proud supporter of its PHCC membership, Conrad Watson Air Conditioning Inc. continues to grow and succeed in the HVAC industry.
