PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Nancy Cummins

A

s I accepted the office of President of the MPMCA it was with a great deal of excitement and a sense of purpose. Committing time to our industry is an important part of our careers, and this is the natural extension of that commitment. This is a great organization. We have strived to keep up with the times and to present new and progressive programs and products for our membership. The magazine continues to be an excellent communication device, but we also have our website. We have our training on new codes and regulations, but now in addition for those who have trouble making it to educational programs we have an online program. We continue to work with the Michigan Legislature and are working to introduce legislation to license HVACR tradespersons. We are strong and getting stronger! Throughout this issue of the magazine, we are reporting on another tremendously important benefit of our Industry — service to the community. This is my favorite issue of the MPMCA Magazine as it shows the great

[6]

work that is being done by our members. People who have volunteered their time to improve their communities. Programs as diverse as HEAT’s ON, Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, collecting for food banks, and many, many more, are being accomplished by our membership to help the people of their neighborhood. This issue summarizes in reports and pictures all that was accomplished this past year where hundreds of thousands of dollars in good will and community service was contributed through the good deeds of our industry. Take a bow — we deserve it! We challenge each and everyone of you to become more involved in your area and to extend the hand of help to those who so dearly need it. Don’t know how to get involved? Call any one of the Associations or members in the following articles. I’m sure they would be happy to let you know how they did it, and it opens a new line of communication for you. I want to thank all of you for your time and efforts to make this state a better place to live. Keep up the great work! Nancy Cummins, MPMCA President

LEAD-FREE. WORRY-FREE. HASSLE-FREE.

With new national lead-free legislation, there’s been a lot of talk about making the switch. Here’s the truth: T&S was the first fixture, faucet and fitting manufacturer to convert its entire line to lead-free alloys back in 2010. So when you purchase a T&S faucet, the peace of mind that comes with lead-free compliance is built right in. No worries. No hassle. Visit tsbrass.com/literature to download a free brochure about our lead-free products, or contact your local T&S rep for more information.

UA Day at the State Capitol The Michigan State Pipe Trades Association hosted UA Day on the front lawn of the State Capitol on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. They brought in several training trailers that are used around the country to allow tours and demonstrations of various pipe trades industry applications, including cut-away of pipes, working plumbing mockups, welding displays and other systems. The motivation behind the event was to bring the training centers to the state legislators to show them what the UA does. The UA has 11 training facilities around Michigan and spends about $8 million on training for Michigan workers each year. Representatives from pipe trades local unions from around Michigan came to support the effort. UA Local 333 Business Manager Judd VanCoppenolle expressed his thanks to UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick and UA Local 333 Director of Training Trent Mauk for spearheading the event. Both Lt. Governor Brian Calley and Senate Majority Leader Rand Richardville toured the trailers and stated they valued seeing what the UA is all about and the importance of having an educated workforce.

Sparrow Children’s Center Telethon The 2014 Sparrow Children’s Telethon on May 30-31, 2014 raised more than $1,011,714 to benefit the young patients of the Sparrow Children’s Center. 3MCA and UA Local 333 were phone bank sponsors and jointly donated $11,000. UA 333 members manned the phone bank (pictured below), which included UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick. 3MCA Executive Director Becky Brimley is pictured right with a $5,000 check.

19th Annual Doug Griffith Breakfast Raises $4,200 for the Children’s Miracle Network Sparrow’s Children Center, UA Local 333 and 3MCA partnered to recognize a leader in community service in tradition of labor leader Doug Griffith to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network on Friday, June 6, 2014. Hosted by UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick, the event raised $4,200 this year. The featured “Miracle Child” was 10-year-old Nicholas Henry of Portland (pictured left with his parents, UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick and Dr. Brian Schroeder of Sparrow Hospital). On August 1, 2013, Nick had a massive brain bleed and his heart stopped on the way to the hospital. He was diagnosed with Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) and only one percent of the population is born with this affliction. Nick was placed in a coma for 10 days and with the support of his Sparrow caregivers, he awoke from the coma and made a full recovery, deifying the odds. His mother, Michelle Henry, stated that Sparrow has given back her Nick and he is able to do everything he did before the bleed and that without the state-of-the-art care he received at Sparrow, he wouldn’t be here today. The Doug Griffith Service Award was presented this year to Art Luna of UAW Local 602. Art was unable to attend this year and the award was received on Art’s behalf by a past (2006) winner, Dean Poggiali of UAW Local 724 (pictured left, third row). The event was well attended by many community leaders and it is an effective fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, with over $70,000 being raised in the nineteen-year history of the event.

More efficiency, better performance.

The e-smart速 choice.

Put a high efficiency ECM Bumble Bee速 circulator together with some Zone Sentry速 zone valves and what do you get? The most efficient system you can install. Your customers can expect annual fuel savings of 4-5%, and they'll love you for it.

Taco makes a full range of e-smart products right here in the USA, all designed to save energy, time, and money. Look for the e-smart graphic on the box, in our ads, and on our web site. It's our way of helping you quickly identify our most resource-saving products.

A great team.

Increase your own efficiency, too.

The Bumble Bee reacts to how many zones are open and how cold it is outside. It then pumps ONLY the BTU's needed to match the actual heating load, assuring that the system will perform as designed, no matter what. Its companion, the Zone Sentry zone valve, draws up to 93% less energy and uses less components, handling up to 12 valves per standard 40 VA transformer. So a whole lot of green thinking has gone into this match.
