y competitors do more for me than my friends. My friends are too polite to point out my weaknesses. But my competitors go Gerald Church to great expense to advertise them. My competitors are efficient, diligent, and attentive and would take my business away from me if they could. They keep me alert and make me search for ways to improve my product and services. If I had no competitors, I would be lazy, incompetent and inattentive. I salute my competitors. They have been good to me. God bless them all! I found this on the wall of a Skippers restaurant several years ago. We can learn so much from our competition if we pay attention. We can learn so much more from our friends. The friendships we make with our PHCC comrades can make all the difference to our businesses when the chips are down. How can you make the difference for someone else? I know you can. Step up to the challenge.

PHCC’s Gerry Kennedy
A life-long educator
A look back over an 18-year career — and forward into the industry’s future.
By Kelly Faloon faloonk@bnpmedia.com
W
Gerry Kennedy, PHCC executive vice president emeritus, speaks to PHCC’s Union-Affiliated Contractors best-practices group. Photo credit: PHCC
hile Gerry Kennedy’s formal relationship with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors — National Association concludes Dec. 31, he will continue to be a part of the organization. “PHCC has the best contractors, the best volunteer leaders, the best auxiliary and spouses, the best industry partners and sponsors, the best state and local executives, and the best national staff,” he says. “There is much more to be done to continue the proud legacy at PHCC.” His successor, Executive Vice President Michael Copp, has asked him to dig through PHCC’s archives and expand upon “A Heritage Unique,” which chronicles the founding of PHCC in 1883 through 1987, to include the organization’s history from 1988 through 2015. Kennedy’s career at PHCC, which spans nearly two decades, started in 1997 when he became the group’s vice president of education and chief operating officer of the PHCC Educational Foundation, the association’s education and training arm. But his career in education began as a 13-year-old Boy Scout patrol leader, when Kennedy realized he had an aptitude for helping others, which led him to become a high school teacher. His studies at what is now New Jersey’s Montclair State University and the University of Connecticut allowed Kennedy to combine administrative work with counseling students, which he loved. At UConn, he designed a course of study that emphasized adult and continuing education. After a successful career as a college and university professor, administrator and dean, he became an association executive in 1982.
6
Familiarity with the trades began with his work at the Association for Career and Technical Education, which represents administrators, counselors and teachers in “trade” programs. “I already knew these professionals were desperate to convince trade professionals to participate in advisory committees to help improve instructional programs,” he notes. “So when the PHCC job came to my attention, I knew this would be an opportunity to bring trade professionals and educators together to strengthen instructional programs for students who do not want a college degree but who do want a well-paying job.” Through his 12 years heading the PHCC Educational Foundation, Kennedy grew its endowment by bringing in new endowment donors and industry sponsorships, including one manufacturer and 18 major contractor donors. The pledges from these donors added more than $1.5 million to the foundation’s endowment. Kennedy also oversaw the restructuring of the Invest in Your Future Annual Giving Campaign, and implemented new donor recognition levels to thank donors who are taking smaller steps on their way to becoming major donors. He encouraged contractors to serve on foundation committees, and successfully integrated the apprentice and journeyman programs that were transferred from PHCC in 2005. A string of successful educational programs were created or updated under Kennedy’s direction, including the Understanding Overhead software, online Contractor Resource Center, the Essentials of Project Management course, the Kohler Seminar Series and the scholarship program. A major accomplishment was the revision of a four-year series of plumbing and HVACR textbooks, along with their accompanying instructor materials and online study versions. In early 2010, then PHCC President Skip Pfeffer asked Kennedy to take on the acting EVP role after the resignation of Dwight “Ike” Casey. Kennedy was named EVP later that spring. “I knew I could hit the ground running and help PHCC to succeed,” he recalls. “I knew it would require that I postpone my retirement for three years, but I knew the challenge would be exciting. And it has been!” Kennedy cites three accomplishments as PHCC’s EVP: 1. The development of a long-term strategic plan to help move the organization forward. Contractor members set the direction so the staff knows what the priorities are, such as training initiatives and legislative issues. 2. Hiring Chuck White as the association’s full-time technical director. White is a third-generation contractor in a fourthgeneration business who understands the plumbing and HVAC business and codes. 3. The nearly four-year focus on fighting regulatory initiatives that would make it difficult or impossible for PHC contractors to deliver the services and install the products consumers want and need. One major change he has seen in his 18 years in the industry is the increasing use of technology in a contractor’s business, such as building information modeling, backoffice computer software and systems, and mobile technology for field technicians. Another
is the use of electronic communication — such as social media and webinars — to deliver information and educational programs to contractors. These programs and systems will continue to help contractors be more productive and profitable. “A third has been the increasing emphasis on the need to protect the environment while not creating regulations and laws that don’t balance the environment with practical ROI considerations,” Kennedy says. Whatever the future holds for contracting businesses, the need will always exist for comprehensive education and training. And the call to arms for a skilled workforce in the plumbing and HVAC trades will continue. “Apprentice programs are a great way for entry-level workers to learn while earning,” Kennedy says. “However, the new products being developed and the way those products need to be installed will require plumbing and HVACR instructors to stay current. It’s not enough to teach what you learned 20 years ago. By the same token, technicians must continuously improve their skills, so continuing education is important. “Many community and technical colleges have plumbing and HVACR programs. It is important that contractors support apprentice and community/technical college programs by serving on advisory committees and offering internships to help entry-level workers develop into the skilled workforce needed by our industry.” Reprinted with permission, Plumbing & Mechanical, BNP Media, © December 2015. In Memoriam
Harold Lyman Felton
December 22, 1979 - January 26, 2016
GoFundMe page set up for the family of Harold Felton This is in regards to Mr. Harold Felton who passed away in a trench collapse in Seattle on January 26th, 2016, while repairing a side sewer. This is very sad. I share this to reinforce the importance of trench safety so that each of us, and our employees, can go home to our families at the end of the day. This is also a great time to come together as an industry and show we are caring, kind and compassionate. Mr. Felton was the sole source of income for his wife and four-month old child, and monetary donations are needed. It made me sad and worried when I heard that there was a trench collapse in Seattle. The victim, Harold Felton, was working on repairing a side sewer when the trench collapsed. I suppose this hit exceptionally hard because this is exactly what we do (repair side sewers). Our employees are in trenches and excavations several times a week. Being in the same business, I couldn’t even imagine how devastating it would be to lose an employee like this. I felt a deep sympathy for Harold’s family, coworkers, friends and especially his wife and four-month old child. After I learned that the family had set up a GoFundMe account to help out with funeral and other immediate expenses, I really wanted to help this family out but I knew I couldn’t do it alone. After attending only one PHCC meeting, and not even being a member yet, I reached out to PHCC and asked for help. I simply sent Michael Kelly, my trusted Nissan commercial truck salesman and PHCC member, to read a simple and short text message during the north end PHCC meeting: This is very tragic and all of us in the plumbing/side sewer business should take some time with our crews to discuss again the risks and importance of proper shoring. I didn’t personally know Mr. Felton however I do know that he leaves behind I widow, a very young child and am sure many grieving family members, coworkers and friends. We all should be keeping the family in our thoughts. I am attaching a link that I saw on the West Seattle Blog that listed a go fund me page to assist the family with funeral expenses Etc. I am very interested in helping out and asking other folks in our industry to take this to heart and consider doing the same. 16
Please be safe out there and shore it up so all of us can come home to our families at the end of the day. Thanks to donations from many caring individuals and companies, the go fund account is doing well yet I’m sure more is needed. I’d like to reference the online article from Seattle times because it has links to a bank account for donations as well as the go fund account page link.
GoFundMe page: www.gofundme.com/feltonsupport or make a donation to FOR THE LOVE OF GRACE Nonprofit Corporation at any US Bank Let’s keep the family and others effected in our thoughts. Let’s talk safety to keep our crews alive. Not shoring up trenches can be a fatal mistake. This is why the regulatory authorities require shoring starting at 4’ deep. Soil is heavy! We often shore at less than 4 feet deep. Competent person training is mandatory for excavations over 4’ deep. Competent person training helps so that your crews are educated in proper trench shoring to keep safe. We use United Rentals in Woodinville, 425.424.8896, to help us with training and they also rent and sell trench shoring equipment. Safety source, 425.822.8300, and Allwest Underground, 253.987.7555 also offer these services. If you have any questions I am willing to help in any way I can. I have been registered as a side sewer contractor for 15 years. Sincerely, Spencer Chynoweth Owner/Operator NW Sewer & Drain Cell: (206) 931-7728 Web: www.nwsewer.com

Do You Get an Annual “Checkup” for Your Business?
A
n annual physical examination by a medical professional not only gives us an opportunity to have an open conversation regarding our current health, it is also a chance to discuss necessary lifestyle changes to improve it in the coming year. Now, apply this same principle to your business. When was the last time you sat face-to-face with your insurance provider for a “checkup” of your business insurance and risk management programs? GET AN INSURANCE “PHYSICAL” As your business changes and grows, so do your business insurance needs. An annual review with your insurance professional is recommended to discuss changes since your last renewal. For example: • Have you purchased or sold buildings, personal property, or vehicles? • Have you experienced fluctuations in payroll or sales receipts as business conditions change? • Have you undertaken any new operations or developed new products or services? • Are there any new legal or regulatory issues affecting your business? • Do you have a key employee who would be difficult to replace? Federated’s marketing representatives use a review process called an Annual Client ReviewSM. This yearly conversation helps ensure that the protection you purchased last year is still adequate today, and is an opportunity to consider, for example, whether your policy limits are adequate. It also gives you and your insurance representative a chance to discuss insured and

self-insured exposures, and any new or evolving exposures that can impact your current insurance program, like data compromise or cyber threats. An annual insurance review also can help you assess the services provided by your current insurance carrier. Are claims paid according to your expectations? Is the insurer still financially sound and stable? Are you receiving the level of policy service and proactive loss prevention support you want? YOUR RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ALSO DESERVES A THOROUGH EXAM In addition to reviewing your insurance program, you should also expect your insurance professional to provide a thorough examination of your current risk management strategies. A risk management review can help identify new exposures or operations that should be addressed. Gauging the effectiveness of your current risk management plans and analyzing past claims experience will help you focus on preventive measures that can have the greatest benefit for your bottom line. An annual risk management review may also: • Help protect the future insurability of your business through loss control and fewer claims • Help reduce insurance premiums • Help manage the hidden costs associated with claims • a more favorable work environment, which can help attract and retain high-quality employees Regular reviews with your insurance provider are important for both your bottom line and for maintaining the health of your business, and can provide some peace of mind for the year ahead. www.phccwa.org • PHCC of Washington News • Spring 2016

PHCC NATIONAL Board of Directors Annual Report
P
HCC’s National Board of Directors met January 29th & 30th in Savannah, Georgia, for a strategic planning session and board meeting. Thank you Greta Flinn, Darrell Fuller and Kenny Calkins for providing information to me and the national office prior to the meeting. It helped identify shared concerns and top priorities for PHCC, its members and affiliated chapters. During the meetings, we discussed challenges facing our association, members and industry and the opportunities we have to further PHCC’s mission in the next five years. A summary is attached. Please help us help you promote the advantages of PHCC membership by sharing this information with your members. I also ask that you discuss these topics with volunteer leaders and at chapter meetings and let me know if there are specific needs we can address at the national level. PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE As plumbing, heating and cooling professionals, PHCC believes its members should be so relevant that their clients and the public identify them as the contractor of choice. During our strategic planning session on Jan. 30, the PHCC—National Association Board of Directors established new member-focused goals to help the association achieve its vision moving forward. I was honored to be part of this thought-provoking day-long process, which several board members called “awesome.” We brainstormed ideas of where we thought the association should be in five years, [and looked] at transformational changes we can make to improve both the association and the industry. Several primary focus areas for the association were identified that address membership growth, workforce development, public awareness, HVAC programs and partnerships, and alternative sources of revenue. The specific action items in each of those areas will be incorporated in a 2016-2021 PHCC Strategic Plan that will be reviewed at the May 17 board meeting in Arlington, Virginia. These new initiatives are in addition to several key functional areas that will continue to make an impact, including legislative and regulatory advocacy. The strategic planning session preceded the Jan. 31 board meeting. During that meeting, the board heard reports from the PHCC zones and staff, reviewed committee updates and took

action on several important steps to move the association forward. We discussed a broad range of issues, including workforce development, new member benefits, licensing issues, member feedback initiatives, and increased collaboration within both the Federation and the industry. “Recurring themes throughout the two-day meeting included providing member value, keeping up with technology and identifying ways to collaborate throughout the association and with the industry,” PHCC President Charles “Chip” E. Greene stated. “With all of this valuable input, we’ll be able to finalize a plan that will take us in new directions and position PHCC for the future.” I’ve provided some of the highlights of the meeting in this article. If you have a question, concern or issue that the national association can help with, please let me know so we can provide you with the answers or assistance you need. HIGHLIGHTS FROM COMMITTEE AND STAFF REPORTS: EVP Update: Executive Vice President Michael Copp provided updates of association initiatives throughout the meeting: • His visits with PHCC chapters are bringing specific issues they are facing to the table and are helping spread the word about the value of PHCC membership. • PHCC is soliciting input from members through “Crowdsourcing” and direct surveys to identify member preferences that can help build relevant education programs, services and discount offerings based on realtime interest. • Outreach to industry manufacturers and service providers is a top priority to identify new partnerships, particularly in HVAC. • Planning is underway for CONNECT 2016, which will be held Oct. 19-21 in San Antonio, Texas. Copp referenced the Flint, Michigan water crisis, stating that PHCC wants to address the disaster and is exploring options to support PHCC of Michigan and its local chapters. He noted that, given PHCC’s mission, it is clear that what is playing out in Flint provides an opportunity to remind consumers and local officials to hire highly trained and licensed PHCC professionals. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: PHCC and the Educational Foundation have developed a variety of turnkey materials and are assisting with grassroots efforts to attract and train industry workers. The newest items include four flyers that focus on the “surprising” facts about careers in the industry and tabletop displays that promote p-h-c careers. And, a new Career Center has been launched that provides an online interactive job board for members and employees. Vice President of Member Services Elicia Magruder reported that staff is also developing a resource booklet that will include the flyers, career day checklists, sample articles and ads to send to local media and other templates that can be used by local and state chapters to promote awareness at the grassroots level. A video that highlights the advantages of a p-h-c career is also planned. In the meantime, be sure to check out www.phccweb.org/ workforce to see what’s currently available. PHCC Vice President of Government Relations Mark Riso announced that PHCC and the Foundation have partnered with the Congressional Career and Technical Education Caucus to host an April 27 roundtable discussion to educate members of Congress and their staffs on the innovative ways the plumbing, heating and cooling industry is addressing the shortage of skilled workers. PHCC is inviting several plumbing and HVAC contractors and industry partners to share their real-life success stories in recruiting and retaining employees. Foundation Board Member Tom Applegate will moderate the event, which is intended to generate ideas for future workforce development programs for the industry. GOVERNMENT RELATIONS AND PAC REPORT: Vice President of Government Relations Riso briefed the board on a series of legislative and regulatory issues, including the recently passed federal budget, which contained a series of pro-small business initiatives; the proposed expansion of the lead paint rule to govern commercial and public buildings; the proposed “Waters of the U.S.” rule; the Furnace, Air Conditioner, Heat Pump Rule; and “Completed Contract Accounting.” The PHCC Legislative Conference will be held May 18th & 19th, 2016. Registration is now open, and all members are encouraged to participate. Riso noted that with 2016 being a key election year, the PHCC PAC will be actively fundraising through its “Change for Change” program and the 535 Congressional Club. A Night at the
Plumbing Museum By Larry Fischer, Prima Plumbing
S
ean Daly of the Art of Plumbing – a member of the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Association of Washington State – has amassed an incredible array of tools as we saw at our convention two years ago in Lake Chelan, WA. On Tuesday, August 30, he will bring many vintage tools for viewing and handling with demonstrations of live action use. To work with the limited display times that are available, he will locate and bring the most appropriate items for the evening. Other PHCC members will bring pipes, fittings and more to be displayed and worked into assemblies. Some of our elders may even be on hand in bib overalls and in position to do some “tricks of the trade” as they were done in days of the past, some of which are still used in some buildings to this day. Ferguson Supply Co. of Seattle has agreed to partner with PHCC to host the event. PHCC members will begin to setup after 5:00 P.M. at the close of their day. They will retain counter sales staff until 7:00 P.M. for many late shoppers in need of that last minute order. Dinner will be burgers and brats as Randy Johnson cooks them so well (vegetarian options will be available), along with potato salad, and more, as supplied by Ferguson Co. and selected vendors. The vendors will display products and demonstrate tools as part of this educational event. Sean described his penchant for the acquisition of the memorabilia items as a historical experience of how the tradesperson of plumbing and heating utilized the items to accomplish the work. He said much can be learned by looking back in history. The motto for the Plumbing, Heating Cooling Contractors is “Pride in our past and faith in our future.” This will certainly give you a strong sense of pride in our industry. Please set aside this evening of August 30th after 5:00 P.M. and enjoy the museum time and comradery with your contractor peers and industry professionals.
