ne of my favorite designers is Coco Chanel, not necessarily for all of the chic designs nor for her politics, but for the strength and individualism she embraced throughout her life, her no-nonsense attitude, her iconic little black dress, and her famous and often quoted remarks. One remark in particular that suits our September issue is “Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.â€? What began as a Chanel-inspired idea to design a Fall & Winter Fashions Guide evolved into our Fall Style Guide, style seeming a more contemporary moniker for fashion. eptember may be hot in the South, but it still brings the beginning of fall. It is time to start dragging out and refreshing all of your fall decorations and pretend that the weather is going to cool off. I actually have more

fall/Thanksgiving decorations than I do Christmas, and my children have followed in my footsteps. Fall foods and fall clothes are so much fun; and anything orange, brown, or pumpkin is going to be in my wardrobe or on my tables. This month

The following three recipes I have had so long I have no idea where they came from. At any fall party I have had for twenty-plus years I have served this Cranberry Brie. In fact, I think we have had it for every Thanksgiving, too. It is so easy and is so impressive. I usually cook my brie a little longer since I like it softer, but family and friends, more or less, go by the original recipe. I have always served this with water crackers, but you could use any cracker.

My daughter Lari has been making these Ranch Pretzels since college. They are easy and also make a nice addition to any party. We usually place them in a bowl on the bar. She also bags them up at Christmas time as happies for her neighbors and friends.

Against Current: On River Bootleggers, Bayou Moonshiners, and the Perseverance of Prohibition in Mississippi—Part I

hen federal agent Izzy Einstein walked out of the New Orleans train station and slid into the back seat of a taxi, he was looking to beat a personal best of eleven minXWHV +H WXUQHG WR WKH GULYHU DQG DVNHG ZKHUH KH FRXOG ÀQG D GULQN A few years before in 1919, the production, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors had been outlawed in the United States with the Eighteenth Amendment. The driver immediately pulled a ÁDVN RXW RI KLV SRFNHW DQG KDQGHG LW EDFN WR (LQVWHLQ 7KLUW\ ÀYH seconds. ,W KDG WDNHQ HOHYHQ PLQXWHV IRU WKH SURKLELWLRQ RIÀFHU WR purchase bootleg liquor in Pittsburgh.

When I slide into a New Orleans taxi on a Friday night nearly a century later, I’m just looking for a seatbelt to make the city stop spinning. The day before, I drove across the Pontchartrain into the Crescent City—the end point of many others’ journeys, the beginning of mine. My route would send me upriver to Baton Rouge, Natchez, Vicksburg, and the Delta, against current and against time, both in search of stories of river bootleggers and moonshiners and in search of places I could stop along the way to get a cold, stiff drink.

What better place to start than New Orleans? Over two summer days, I walk the blistering city, crawling into libraries and out of warehouses. Thursday afternoon, I drink a salty piĂąa colada gose at Urban South, one of eight industrial breweries located along the curve of the river. I swear I can actually make out the tang of the missing rum, but that might be the aftertaste of having just read a slew of old newspaper articles about rum runners. During prohibition, intoxicating spirits were passed from Caribbean smugglers onto high-speed contact boats off the U.S. coast. These smaller boats then disappeared up the Mississippi River and into the network of confusing bayous where WKH\ FRXOG HYDGH SDWURO RIĂ€FHUV DQG KLGH the booze before transporting it in cars and trains throughout the States. According to one headline from 1932, a lugger named Friendship made it all the way up the river into a Jefferson Parish canal before getting caught. In another case, two boats containing 29,000 pints of whiskey were seized by agents, but not before the bootleggers themselves could escape into the bayous of Brown Cheniere Island. New Orleans, though, was quick to forget prohibition ever happened after its repeal in 1933. After brunch Friday morning, a friend and I just pour our mimosas into plastic to-go cups. This is about as close to smuggling as it gets anymore. My friend, Joe, is a vagabond writer. He runs with Basque bulls and away from article deadlines, one of which is, in fact, fast approaching in less than twelve hours. We just barely make curfew that night, wandering the bywater over train tracks and into Catholic churches to light candles. We go from Elizabeth’s to Parleaux Beer Lab to Bacchanal Wine Bar, from liquor to beer to wine; and we live to regret it. The next morning, I drive to Atelier Vie, which is hidden under an overpass, past a buzzer, through a red door, and over the river to grandmother’s house. Here, Jedd Haas runs a one-man operation distilling brandy, vodka, whiskey, two types of gin, a red absinthe, and a green absinthe. He has me taste every single one of them. They’re very good. I’m very hungover. I almost regret pouring half the brandy into a nearby Ă€FXV ZKHQ KH LVQ¡W ORRNLQJ Crawling back under my bed covers afterwards, I declare into my pillow that no, LW¡V FHUWDLQO\ QRW KDUG WR Ă€QG D FROG VWLII

drink in New Orleans. It never has been. When Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long was asked what he’d do to stop bootleggers, he responded, “Not a damn thing!â€? +LV VWDWH MXVW EDUHO\ UDWLĂ€HG WKH (LJKWHHQWK Amendment; and within two years of its SDVVDJH /RXLVLDQD KDG DOUHDG\ PRGLĂ€HG LW with the Hood Act, which permitted homebrewing and the transport and serving of liquor for private parties. According to stateliquorlaws.com, Louisiana still has some of the most lax laws in the United States on the matter. On the production side, all the brewers and distillers I speak to are mostly content with the state’s system, which has, for the most part, kept up with the times.

Mississippi, on the other hand, not so much... In 1908, ten years ahead of the federal government, our state legislature outlawed the local sale and importation of liquor. We ZHUH WKH ÀUVW WR DSSURYH WKH (LJKWHHQWK $PHQGPHQW DQG ZH QHYHU RIÀFLDOO\ UHpealed it. By means of a 1966 law, counties can chose to go wet; but the state is still

RIĂ€FLDOO\ GU\ QRW WKDW \RX¡G HYHU EHOLHYH that sitting on the patron side of any of our thousands of bars here. From the other side, though, it’s a different story. Luckily, when I drive into Natchez from New Orleans and head into King’s Tavern one day later and one hangover lighter, I’m on the former side. On the latter side stands Doug Charboneau, owner of both this restaurant and the Charboneau Rum Distillery next door. The Mississippi 2IĂ€FH RI $OFRKROLF %HYHUDJH &RQWURO (ABC), which was founded in 1966, is the state-run wholesale distributor for all wine and spirits made here. Not only does Charboneau pay the state an annual manufacturer’s permit fee of $9,025 (compared to $3,625 for wineries and $1,000 for breweries), but he also must ship his rum through a Madison warehouse where the ABC will then charge any retailer buying it a 27.5% markup plus shipping and processing fees and a state excise tax on top of the wholesale price. And there are no exceptions. Every bottle sold PXVW EH VKLSSHG WR 0DGLVRQ Ă€UVW ´<HV Âľ Charboneau says, “even those sold to King’s Tavern.â€?

Mississippi breweries are experiencing a similar problem. People forget that beer was also outlawed during prohibition. For lawabiding citizens, it was replaced with near beer, which one Vicksburg man said was “like kissing one’s sister.� For Mississippians along the river, on the other hand, this near beer was spiked to bring the alcohol content back up to where God had intended. In Natchez, near beer emporiums were opened and shut like refrigerator doors as the proprietors were caught again and again selling the real stuff. At the same time, homebrewing kits were sold in grocery stores; and George Washington’s beer recipe was distributed in the paper for all to partake. There was probably more homebrewing going on in Natchez in 1918 than in 2012, the year Lisa and Patrick Miller moved back here to start Natchez Brewing Company. As Patrick tells me, homebrewing was illegal in Mississippi until 2013, as opposed to 1979 in most other states. Brewers could not even sell pints on site until last year, which is partially why, as Matthew McLaughlin, an attorney and the director of the Mississippi Brewers Guild,

tells me, the state is ten years behind everyone else. Though, you can’t say there’s any catching up to do when it comes to drinking the stuff, especially in those counties along the river. From Adams to Bolivar to DeSoto, these counties were the last to vote in proKLELWLRQ DQG WKH Ă€UVW WR YRWH LW RXW EXW HYHQ during those in-between years, you could never call them anything but sopping wet. They’re just too close to the water and to the states on the other side of it. In 1909, just twenty-six days after statewide prohibition took effect, the Natchez Chief of Police had his hands full with drunks who had been dumped back ashore after getWLQJ WKHLU Ă€OO RQ 9LGDOLD H[FXUVLRQ ERDWV One such boat, the Desplanes, described as a “red-eye rookery and beer emporium,â€? handed out pints of whiskey in exchange for passage tickets. For many, though, it wasn’t even necessary for them to step foot on a boat themselves. In 1911, The Natchez Democrat called prohibition “the greatest farce of the age.... Today, a man or youth can telephone across the river, have the call reversed,

order the liquor and it will be delivered at WKH VWRUH WKH RIĂ€FH RU KRPH ZKHQHYHU GHsired, within the hour.â€? According to Natchez native George Kelly, “whenever desiredâ€? apparently also included parties in the men’s dressing room. In a 1920s letter to his wife, the owner of Melrose mansion described a party he had attended at Lansdowne plantation. In the men’s room, he found “three ladies and twice as many men already in there. [‌] Several others were around a gallon bottle on the dresser. New Hope M. B. Church “Ladies Day Out” he ladies of New Hope M. B. Church of Brookhaven, Mississippi, celebrated its annual “Ladies Day Out” on May 26, 2018, with a trip to Prissy Paintbrush Studios in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Greeting the ladies as they arrived was co-owner Hope Mallard, who had everything they needed to create their masterpieces. They had a wonderful time as Mallard walked them through each step of how to paint, which brush to use, and how to mix colors. After a couple of hours of painting and singing, the ladies were treated to lunch at Mama Hamil’s.

Freedom Celebration at Heritage Family Church n July 1, 2018, Heritage Family Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi, hosted its first-annual, communitywide Freedom Celebration with approximately 400 to 500 people on the grounds throughout the day. It began at two o’clock p.m. in the church sanctuary with a patriotic program featuring patriotic music, a message from Reverend Randal Bowling, and a recognition of veterans and community leaders. A barbeque dinner, softball game, horseshoes, and inflatable jump houses extended the day’s commemoration that concluded with a stunning hour-long fireworks show.

Ritz on the River n July 19, 2018, the Vicksburg Convention Center went retro with The Molly Ringwalds band at the Fifth Annual Ritz on the River. The room was filled with over 600 attendees decked out in their retro-prom attire, and the room was doused with ’80s flair. The Molly Ringwalds dazzled and engaged the audience with energy and passion and took them on a musical journey filled with all the hits that transcended the ’80s. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Jacob’s Ladder. For adolescents and young adults who have intellectual challenges, Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center provides a quality education that prepares them for adulthood.

DC Trip for Culture of Health Prize Recipients ecently, Linda Fondren with Shape Up Mississippi and Michele Connelly with United Way of West Central Mississippi were delegates to Washington, D. C., representing Vicksburg, Mississippi, as Culture of Health Prize recipients. Fondren and Connelly were chosen to receive the Connect Prize that funded this trip, compliments of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to speak with United States Senators and Representatives in order to highlight their community-led health initiatives that have received national recognition and are aimed at improving well-being for all residents. Since 2013, 35 communities nationwide have received the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize for innovative efforts to improve health. Vicksburg is the first community in Mississippi to win this prize.

McComb Garden Club May Luncheon t the Caboose Restaurant in downtown McComb, Mississippi, the McComb Garden Club held its annual May luncheon and installation of the 2018-2019 board members. Also at this meeting, members celebrated the 60th anniversary of the club featuring the past year’s theme, “Cultivating the Community for 60 Years.” As Parliamentarian, Sara Jones installed the new board members while Carla Stringer, 2017-2018 Garden Club President, passed the gavel to Kindra Price, the incoming Garden Club President. Awards from the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., and Deep South Garden Clubs were presented to the McComb Garden Club and members for their exemplary flower show and commitment to the McComb community.
