e have embraced all that was October with those warm-temperature days, and we have laughed about the many comments on social media reminding those of us in this area that this year’s fall was only images on calendars and in magazines and books from other parts of the world. No matter the reality that October persisted with temps in the nineties, we accented our front steps and the sides of our front doors with pumpkins, graced our front doors and ÀOOHG RXU KRPHV ZLWK +DOORZHHQ GpFRU DQG PDGH VRXSV DQG VWHZV DQG FKLOL DQG SXPSNLQ à DYRUHG recipes from last month’s G’s Fare. Ah, but now has come the welcomed arrival of November, a special month for me. I love this month for many reasons—the drops in temSHUDWXUH WKH ÀQDO GURSSLQJ RI WKH OHDYHV LQ RXU case this may be from seven weeks of drought), the preparations for family and friends coming for Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving, and the birthday RI P\ ÀUVW JUDQGGDXJKWHU %ODLU (YHQ 1RYHPEHU¡V two birthstones are among my favorites. I have always loved the warm colors of 1RYHPEHU¡V ÀHU\ WRSD] DQG KHDOLQJ FLWULQH 7RSD] ZLWK LWV EULOOLDQW JROGHQ JORZ DQG à DPLQJ intensity of yellows to oranges to deep pinks and purples was in ancient times thought to be symEROLF RI WKH (J\SWLDQ 6XQ *RG 5D &LWULQH LV GLDmetrically the opposite of its showy November cousin in quality and disposition. While topaz is associated with passion, intensity, and determination, citrine with its golden gemstone glow of pale yellows to dark brownish oranges has the more gentle qualities of peace, prosperity, loyalty, healing, and creativity. According to legend, topaz was believed to control heat, having the power to cool boiling water and, consequently, to quell a person’s anger, cutting through despair, rage, or confusion and lending clarity of thought to the wearer of the gemstone. During the Middle Ages, the stone was used by royalty and clergy. In times of old, WKH 5RPDQV DVVRFLDWHG WRSD] ZLWK WKHLU 6XQ *RG DQG WKH ODUJHVW SODQHW RI RXU 6RODU V\VWHP -XSLWHU &LWULQH LV ZLGHO\ EHOLHYHG WR EHVWRZ JRRG IRUtune and success to the wearer, earning it the tiWOH 7KH 6XFFHVV 6WRQH %RWK RI WKHVH 1RYHPEHU ELUWKVWRQHV UHà HFW WKH FKDQJLQJ FRORUV RI WKH leaves and the varying moods of the season in November, autumn’s second month.

he Brookhaven Trust held its ticket party recently for the upcoming 2019 Taste of the Trust fundraiser to be held November 14, 2019, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Brookhaven Country Club. Those attending this event will enjoy cuisine from area cafes and caterers along with live music, beverages, and a silent auction. Proceeds from this event benefit the Brookhaven Trust, which works to preserve historical and cultural elements of downtown Brookhaven and to promote the arts. his is without a doubt my very favorite time of the year. I love everything about November—the dipping temperatures, the crackOLQJ ÀUHV WKH FUXQFK RI OHDYHV ZKHQ \RX DUH RQ D ORQJ FRXQWU\ ZDON WKH VPRN\ VPHOO GULIWLQJ DORQJ WKH DLU DV ÀUHV EXUQ LQGRRUV DQG HVpecially my children and grandchildren coming home for Thanksgiving. We begin in October dividing up the cooking list and seeing who will bring what. We all constantly peruse Pinterest, looking for new and different recipes to share and get one another’s opinions of them. When the grands arrive, we collect acorns to pile up for the deer, rake up huge piles RI OHDYHV IRU WKHP WR MXPS LQ GUDJ VWLFNV WR WKH RXWGRRU ÀUHSODFH VR ZH can roast hotdogs and marshmallows, taste all of the desserts or create new ones, do some messy craft that involves paint and/or glue…in other words, just have fun. Thursday, we girls all get busy in the kitchen coordinating cooking time while the men bring in the big tables and set them up. The older grands are now in charge of setting the tables for anywhere from twentyÀYH WR WKLUW\ SHRSOH ZLWK DOO RI XV VLWWLQJ WRJHWKHU DW RQH ELJ WDEOH ,W LV D WLPH ÀOOHG ZLWK ZRQGHUIXO PHPRULHV RI DOO RI XV WRJHWKHU ,W GRHV JHW rather wild with eighteen people plus dogs, day and night under one roof; but I wouldn’t change it for anything. APPLE CIDER MIMOSA Fill a champagne glass 1/2 full of champagne and top with the Apple Cider.
CRANBERRY POINSETTIAS Fill a champagne glass 1/2 full of champagne and top with cranberry syrup and candied cranberries (from Myrecipes.com). Sugared/Candied Cranberries: 2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups water 2 cups fresh cranberries J\W Z\WLYÄUL Z\NHY Step 1: Combine granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring mixture until sugar dissolves. Bring to a simmer; remove from heat. (Do not boil or the cranberries may pop when added.) Stir in cranberries; pour mixture into a bowl. Cover and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight Step 2: Drain cranberries in a colander over a bowl, reserving steepPUN SPX\PK PM KLZPYLK 7SHJL Z\WLYÄUL Z\NHY PU H ZOHSSV^ KPZO (KK [OL cranberries, rolling to coat with sugar. Spread sugared cranberries in a single layer on a baking sheet; let stand at room temperature 1 hour or until dry. Step 3: The steeping liquid clings to the berries and helps the sugar adhere. Store in an air-tight container in a cool place for up to a week.

On the other side of the table was the Bloody Mary Bar. On a lazy-susan platform, Jordan placed jars of various olives, carrot sticks, celery sticks, bread sticks, and her infused vodka that she made using the recipe from aforkstale.com
THE BEST BLOODY MARY VODKA INFUSION 1 sliced tomato (Jordan did not use these.) 1/4 sliced onion (Jordan did not use these.) 2 celery stalks, chopped 1/4 cup baby carrots or 2 chopped carrots 1/2 cucumber, sliced 1 sliced lemon [V ZWYPNZ VM KPSS TVYL MVY H Z[YVUN KPSS ÅH]VY 2 garlic cloves 750 ML vodka 1 sliced jalapeùo, optional Your favorite Bloody Mary mix In a large container, combine all except the last two ingredients. Refrigerate 3 days. If you want to make it spicy, add the sliced jalapeùo for the last 2 hours. (You don’t want to add it for too long because it will become too hot very quickly.) Remove all the vegetables and strain clean. Mix with the Bloody Mary mix, or store in refrigerator until ready to use and then add to the Bloody Mary mix.

Last year, when Jordan suggested a Charcuterie Board, I had no idea what she was talking DERXW 1RZ \RX FDQ Ă€QG LW RQ VR PDQ\ UHVWDXUDQW PHQXV $FFRUGLQJ WR :HEUHVWDXUDQDWVWRUH Charcuterie is “a branch of cooking involving prepared meats, such as ham, sausage, bacon, FRPĂ€W RU RWKHU SRUN SURGXFWV :KLOH WKH RULJLQDO )UHQFK WUDQVODWLRQ UHIHUV WR SRUN PRGern Charcuterie boards can include other types of food, such as duck, goose, chicken, cheese, toast, fruit, or other options.â€? I found these suggestions on Pinterest at modern-glam.com. Remember, these are just suggestions, so add what you and your guests like.
CHARCUTERIE BOARD Cheeses which can be a mixture of hard, semi-hard, and/or soft varieties A selection of cured meats, such as prosciutto, salami, ham, or bacon. Condiments such as various mustards, honey, or fruit spreads Fruits, nuts, olives, and especially grapes and sliced apples Crackers and breads to build the board creation Layer all selections onto a wooden board or tray and garnish with fresh herbs tucked into the empty spaces. Be as creative as you want to be; add or subtract what you want. There are no set rules about what you must have. You can make this small for just a few friends or large for a crowd.

he Wesson Garden Club kicked off its new year on August 13, 2019, with its annual Membership Luncheon held at Porches Restaurant. Members were welcomed by club president Debbie Smith, who gave an overview of the projects and events for the coming year. The Wesson Garden Club is well known for its historic preservation, garden therapy, youth gardening, and maintenance of the many landscaped gardens throughout the historic Town of Wesson.

O
ver the weekend, I was sitting in my living room around S P ZKHQ , JRW DQ XUJHQW FDOO LQIRUPLQJ PH WKDW D friend of mine had been seriously injured in a 4-wheeler accident and they were rushing him to the emergency room. When I got there, it had yet to be determined if he were going to be treated LQ 1DWFKH] RU DLUOLIWHG WR D KRVSLWDO LQ $OH[DQGULD /RXLVLDQD :KLOH , ZDV VWDQGLQJ LQ WKH (5 SDUNLQJ ORW ZDLWLQJ IRU WKH GHFLVLRQ WR EH made about my friend, surprisingly, another vehicle sped into the lot; and I learned the emergency involved a child who had been seriously injured while riding on a 4-wheeler. These two events have prompted me to examine ATVs and just how dangerous they can be. Of course, I will discuss when, if ever, related liability can be a problem. This issue has actually been on my mind for some time. A few years back, I represented a company that manufactured electric ATVs; and in my capacity as their attorney, I saw all their lawsuits come across my desk. There were a few lawsuits resulting from horrible injuries and one lawsuit involving a death. Virtually all of the allegations in these lawsuits were that the ATV itself was defective. There was, however, one pattern I noticed in most of WKHVH ODZVXLWV 7KH PDMRULW\ RI WKH DFFLGHQWV LQYROYHG FKLOGUHQ XQder the age of 16, riding irresponsibly without adult supervision alone in the woods, only to see calamity befall them. The worst case I saw involved a 12-year-old child, riding an ATV by himself on a paved road going downhill. I should mention that all ATV manufacturers warn against riding an ATV on a paved road. Nonetheless, while going downhill, the child went off the pavement and into a curb, causing him to over correct. As a Page 20 { November 2019 { Bluffs & Bayous
result of the over-correction, the ATV rolled at a high rate of speed, killing the child. I know, incredibly sad! I have a 13-year-old child and confess that I let him ride my 4-wheeler although he is never allowed to take it out of third gear, nor is he allowed to let a buddy ride with him. In fact, my father, an experienced rider, has himself turned over three ATVs. 7RGD\ LW LV H[WUHPHO\ UDUH WR Ă€QG DQ\ $79 GHIHFW WKDW FDXVHV an accident, short of a wheel falling off. Baby Shower for Abagail and Philip Washington riends and family hosted a special baby shower for a new addition to the Washington family—Abagail and Phillip Washington’s sweet little “arrival” in November 2019. We are lucky in 0LVVLVVLSSL WR EH DEOH WR HQMR\ à RZHULQJ hibiscuses from late spring through the fall. These colorful accents range from hardy to tropical and even two that are called rosHV³5RVH RI 6KDURQ DQG &RQIHGHUDWH 5RVH +LELVFXVHV DUH PHPEHUV RI WKH PDOlow family, which includes one of our 6RXWKHUQ YHJHWDEOH IDYRULWHV RNUD ,W LV easy to see the family resemblance when FRPSDULQJ à RZHUV Today, I want to discuss another member of the mallow family, one that many gardeners aren’t aware of but really should EH ,¡P WDONLQJ DERXW 5RVHOOH /DVW PRQWK at the Ornamental Field Day at Mississippi 6WDWH 8QLYHUVLW\¡V 6RXWK 0LVVLVVLSSL %UDQFK ([SHULPHQW 6WDWLRQ LQ 3RSODUYLOOH most of the attendees were loving and askLQJ DERXW WKLV XQIDPLOLDU SODQW 5HG URVHOOH RU -DPDLFDQ URVHOOH LV RQH RI WKH VWDUV RI WKH fall landscape. is why roselle is sometimes called the Florida cranberry. It you’re a fan of an herbal tea called red zinger, the dried calyx gives this drink its zinger and bright-red color. It is also full RI YLWDPLQ & DQG WKH à DYRU OHQGV LWVHOI WR candies and syrups as well. In fact, I remember once having a delicious hibiscus cocktail that featured a candied roselle calyx as the garnish. Growing roselle in Mississippi means enjoying it as a fantastic garden annual since it’s hardy only in Zones 10 and %XW WKDW¡V RND\ 7KLV VSHFLDO SODQW is easy to grow and should be in every Mississippi garden. During the planning activities, Geohegan reflected, “Whether it was ordering decorations, intercepting a birthday card that was mailed early, preparing food, or picking up party items, our friends and family were nothing short of amazing throughout this process. Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving – Blessings Both %\ &KHU\O 5LQHKDUW
I
n recent years, Friendsgiving has become a celebration growing in popularity alongside Thanksgiving itself—the centuries-old one-day gathering, mostly with family but often with friends as well. Of course, Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November to commemorate the original Pilgrim settlers in Plymouth, Massachusetts Colony, who LQ VKDUHG WKHLU ¿UVW ELJ FHOHEUDWLRQ LQ the New World with their Native American
friends, who had helped them survive a KDUVK ¿UVW \HDU DQG EULQJ LQ WKHLU ¿UVW VXFcessful harvest in their new home. While WKH ¿UVW 7KDQNVJLYLQJ ZDV FHOHEUDWHG LQ the 1600s, the practice of celebrating it yearly was not actually adopted until the late 1700s. Since then, the holiday has been a consistent part of American tradition. The name Friendsgiving, an obvious combination of friends and Thanksgiving, is an event created mainly by those and IRU WKRVH XQDEOH WR JR ´RYHU WKH ULYHU DQG

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, veterans, and non-veterans who have a strong desire to honor the memories of those who served our country, the Military Memorial Museum continues to provide a place to recognize those who gave so much and to educate others about the sacrifices of war. Instrumental in the process of preserving the memories of veterans, -DFN 5XWODQG -U ORFDO EDQNHU LQ FRRSHUDWLRQ ZLWK 6XSHU7DON 5DGLR has recorded thirty-minute interviews with fifty veterans; and these interviews are aired weekly.

These remarkable stories are also available at the museum for the public to hear the real-life experiences told by those ZKR OLYHG WKHP +RZHYHU WKH YROXQWHHUV felt that more needed to be done to ensure that these stories could reach others, especially the younger generation who may be unaware of the roles their own relatives and neighbors played in Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts to uphold and provide freedom both at home and abroad. 'XULQJ WKH YLVLW E\ 5XVVHOO DQG KHU classes to the museum, she and volunteer Greg Whittier discussed the importance of educating the students about the roles that local service men and women, some of whom were friends and relatives of the students themselves, have played in the 8QLWHG 6WDWHV 0LOLWDU\ $W WKLV WLPH WKH 626 6DYLQJ 2XU 6WRULHV) Project originated. With the enthusiastic support of around forty history students, and with the help of &RORQHO :HDYHU GLUHFWRU RI %URRNKDYHQ +LJK 6FKRRO¡V -527& DQG st 6HUJHDQW Williams, the interviews began. Organizing questions and familiarizing themselves with military terminology, the students started to delve into the memories of active-duty as well as retired military personnel, both from the local community and from nearby counties. Many students interviewed family members of those who had made the ultiPDWH VDFULĂ&#x20AC;FH 7KH LQWHUYLHZV LQFOXGHG D photo of the military member and a story about an experience during his or her service career. Proving to be far more than just an educational experience, the interviews provided the students an insight into the lives, VDFULĂ&#x20AC;FHV DQG PHPRULHV RI WKHVH VHOĂ HVV patriotic, and heroic individuals. Not only was a special bond forged through the interviews, but also students had the privLOHJH RI KHDULQJ Ă&#x20AC;UVW KDQG DERXW WKH VLJQLĂ&#x20AC;FDQW UROHV WKHLU IDPLOLHV IULHQGV DQG neighbors played in the real history of the United States of America. What a history lesson these students received! Thanksgivingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bounty and Blessings
I
t is my great hope that by the time the November issue is on the newsstands, it will be real autumn, the temperatures will no longer be in the 90s, and the ground will have some moisture in it again. The weather has been great for the farmers during harvest time, no rainy spells, no hurriFDQHV MXVW KRW DQG GU\ ([FHSW for the usual breakdowns, harvest has gone as well as I can remember. Now, if the prices for the beans and cotton would just go up, we could all sit back and be thankful that it is all in, one more time. It is hard to believe that November is upon us with December FORVH EHKLQG , MXVW JRW (DVWHU UDEELWV EDFN LQ WKH DWWLF DQG QRZ LW¡V WLPH IRU 3LOJULPV DQG WXUNH\V WR FRPH EDFN GRZQ (LWKHU , DP VXSHU slow or the time is doubling up on me. As children, my little brothers and I loved November and Thanksgiving. In school, we sang Thanksgiving songs, made Pilgrim hats and Native American headbands and feathers, and had plays that celebrated the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth 5RFN :H OHDUQHG WKDW WKH IULHQGVKLS RIIHUHG E\ WKH 1DWLYH $PHULFDQV VDYHG WKH 3LOJULPV LQ WKHLU Ă&#x20AC;UVW KDUG \HDUV 7KH\ WDXJKW the Pilgrims what to plant and how to plant it. I will never forget WKH VWRU\ DERXW WKHP WHOOLQJ WKH VHWWOHUV WR SXW D VPDOO Ă&#x20AC;VK ZLWK WKH VHHGV DV WKH\ ZHUH SODQWHG LQ WKH JURXQG IRU WKH GHFD\LQJ Ă&#x20AC;VK would fertilize the soil and give the seed an extra boost. It was a valuable lesson for the newcomers. We learned to appreciate that the Pilgrims had come to this New World to have a better life for themselves and their children. They escaped religious persecution and the rigid class system of the %ULWLVK ,VOHV WR IRXQG FRORQLHV WKDW FHOHEUDWHG D IUHHGRP RI ZRUVKLS GHQLHG WKHP LQ *UHDW %ULWDLQ ,W WRRN ODWHU VWXGLHV DIWHU HOHPHQtary school to realize that the freedom of religion that the Pilgrims VRXJKW ZDV QRW H[WHQGHG WR RWKHU VHWWOHUV LQ WKLV QHZ ZRUOG %XW thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a story for another day. Our Pilgrims worked hard and celebrated their successful crops with a day of Thanksgiving to God who had delivered them from the strict and cruel Old World and from the trials of living in an uncivilized new land. They celebrated with a feast and were joined by their Native American friends, sharing the fruits of their labors. +DYLQJ D IHDVW ZDV WKH KLJKHVW KRQRU WKDW WKH\ FRXOG SURYLGH IRU their families and their friends, for they had suffered through some lean times when food was not as plentiful. When we were children, our Thanksgiving dinner would often KDYH D WXUNH\ IURP 0LPL¡V Ă RFN (YHU\ \HDU ZH KRSHG WKDW 0LPL would pick the mean old gobbler who chased us around the yard and would attack us just for being there. We thought he would look MXVW Ă&#x20AC;QH DOO URDVWHG DQG EURZQ DQG WDVW\ +HUH¡V DQ H[DPSOH RI WKH JREEOHU¡V RUQHU\ WHPSHU 2QH &KULVWPDV 1XE DQG 'RXJ JRW 'DY\ &URFNHWW FDSV DQG VXLWV DQG they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to go show Mimi and Papa, next door. As soon as they stepped in the yard, here came Tom Turkey, his wings spread RXW PDNLQJ D EHH OLQH IRU WKH WZR \RXQJ IURQWLHUVPHQ 8S RQ WKH porch they went till the gobbler strutted away. When it was time to go home, they slipped out the back door and raced home, their lives and coonskin caps intact. , JXHVV 0LPL Ă&#x20AC;JXUHG WKH ROG ER\ ZDV WRR WRXJK WR HDW IRU VKH usually chose one of the hens to cook for us. With a big pan of dressing along with vegetables and salads and pies and cakes, we feasted just like the Pilgrims in the 1620s. We were just as grateful, too, to have such a wonderful meal. It is satisfying to know that the tradition of the Thanksgiving feast is still popular in America although Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure that God LV DV DSSUHFLDWHG DQG WKDQNHG DV VLQFHUHO\ DV KH ZDV DW WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW Thanksgiving. We have so much now; hunger is practically unNQRZQ LQ 0LGGOH $PHULFD &RPSDUHG WR PRVW RI WKH ZRUOG ZH feast every day; and we take that abundance for granted.
