Learn How to Improve Online Marketing: Performance Marketing With Google Analytics By: Pierre DeBois Source: Smallbiztrends.com When it comes to small business owners facing decisions, a movie quote that truly captures the feeling comes from Keanu Reeves as Neo in “The Matrix Reloaded,” when he confronts the Architect and says, “Choice. The problem is choice.” Although Reeves’ statement was regarding the Matrix program in the movie series, most small business owners regard effective online marketing with similar feelings of revelation.

A NOTE FROM KARRI Dear Chamber Member, After the City of Hillsdale offered to give the Mitchell Building to the Chamber, they then made a decision to use the Mitchell Building for their own purposes. Many hours of meetings and legal fees all for naught. With their decision, came a 30 day termination of tenancy notice. So as soon as the car show was over, we hit the streets looking for a building that would suit the Chambers’ needs. Some of the features we were seeking were visibility, storage, accessibility and affordability. After a couple of weeks of exploring every possible option, we decided that the former Dr. SayGan building would be the best available location. So every night after work, a crew of volunteers worked to renovate the office...Chamber style. It’s amazing the transformation that took place in about ten days. I am not sure I would recommending trying this again, but I am sure appreciative for all of the help we received during this short window of time. We are planning a Business After Hours/Open House in the fall to showcase our new office. In the mean time, feel free to stop by and take a look at our new digs. Because of our move, the phone directory was delayed a bit. The final changes are being made and will be at the printer very soon. Thank you for your continued support and patience. I am sure you will be pleased with this publication. Our golf outing had to be rescheduled to September 23. Please mark your calendars and plan on a attending one of the last outings of the season as we partner with the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department at White Oaks Golf Club. It’s that time again….are you interested in showcasing your business at the Most Popular Fair On Earth? Not every business can spend an entire week at the fair, so we offer you the opportunity to share our booth for a 1/2 day shift (10 AM - 4 PM or 4 PM - 10 PM). If you are interested in promoting your business at the fair with us in our booth, please give us a call. Space is on a first come first serve basis. We need your brochures, business cards and promotional publications. We are seeing an increase in foot traffic and need more literature to provide to people inquiring about our community. As always, if there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact us. Regards,
Karri Doty, IOM, CBSP President/Executive Director Page 2

The authors show how to assess the metrics and dimensions in the user interface, such as their comparison of long tail and head keywords to increase online presence. “If a given keyword drives 60 percent of the revenues because it receives the majority of ad spend and generates the majority of traffic, but 10 other keywords that each receive one-tenth of the traffic have twice the per-visit value,…shifting the spend from
In each chapter, you can learn how to easily support a business objective with analytics. A Venn diagram for the city, region and visitor settings from the Map Overlay is an inspired instance of applying advanced segmentation. Other tidbits include Pivot Tables and inverse inclusion of traffic segments. These topics make the book a gotta-have in the business library, be it a den or iPad. Who Will Benefit From Performance Marketing? Although an analytics solution can make your business decisions easier, it can take multiple steps of analysis
to make the data useful to your business decisions. That’s what makes Performance Marketing terrific. The book scales well for small businesses managing a marketing campaign and thus find themselves searching for those right steps. There are clear suggestions for mobile, social media and online video, as well as a nod to television ads. All of it can be understood by chapter or collectively based on your need. If you have experience with Google Analytics, you will find the feature descriptions familiar (Let’s face it; there’s only so many ways to explain a first user cookie). Not surprisingly, this material complements the coding and installation steps contained in Justin Cutroni’s book Google Analytics. Performance Marketing also offers a few words on API development. It’s working knowledge, but for many small business owners, that’s enough. More than one of the best analytics books available, Performance Marketing reflects the promise of collective intellectual capital, gathering the knowledge of experienced professionals to address practical, get-it-done marketing matters. Moreover, business owners will become fluent enough to comfortably convey their questions to the analytics practitioners who keep their marketing and websites humming. Give Performance Marketing a read, and your business performance will get a boost from experienced insights.

Top 7 Tips for Effective Delegation How to Delegate and Grow Your mall Business By: Alyssa Gregory Source: About.com
There are a lot of decisions and processes to consider when it comes time to build a team and delegate, and there are steps to be taken early on in the process to make it more effective. Here are the top seven tips for effective delegation to get you on the right track.
Analyze Your Needs First Knowing what to delegate and who you need on your team to do it effectively, requires a clear picture of everything you Many small business owners become have on your plate. The best way to figure jacks-of-all-trades and do a little bit of out where your time is going, especially everything when it comes to time that's going where it shouldn't be, is by managing their businesses. This versatility can be a tremendous asset when first starting tracking your time - all of your time, for both billable and non-billable work. a business. As time goes on, however, the small business owner who continues to do everything him or herself will hit what I call the success stopping point. Until a team is developed and some of the daily tasks and business management responsibilities are delegated, the business can't grow, and the business owner will likely be overextended and highly frustrated.
K E N’ S O R N E R
If you kept track of everything you do during your workday, I bet you'd be surprised to see where your time is going and what qualifies as your biggest time drains. This alone can be a powerful tool for identifying potential tasks to delegate, and even tasks to eliminate from your business. Explore Your Options Delegation can take many different forms,
and each option depends on your business and your needs. The most effective delegation system is one that you can trust and will grow and change as your needs grow and change. Two of the most common delegation options include hiring an employee and outsourcing to an independent contractor such as a virtual assistant. There are many facets to consider when deciding between an employee and an independent contractor Document Everything Before you even begin delegating, you will need to start tracking all of the information, knowledge and processes that make your business run like a well-oiled machine. This may be a challenge because you probably don't think about this data often; you just do what needs to be done. But having comprehensive and clear documentation is essential in order to delegate effectively.

August 2011
It seems like just yesterday I made my drive to Lansing in sleet and snow. To recognize August as being the month of many community activities such as parades and festivals while also being home with friends and family, is in itself a rewarding and enjoyable time. Summer has been filled with many of these activities both in Lansing and also throughout the district. While legislative sessions did not have a regular schedule for July and August, the committee meetings, workshops and in district events have been ongoing. I was able to host the Michigan Agriculture Director, Mr. Keith Creigh to our district and had numerous visits to area farms and agriculture

Top 7 Tips for Effective Delegation How to Delegate and Grow Your mall Business Continued from Page 10 In general, all of your processes and systems should include a clear written summary so any future member of your team can jump in and pick up where you left off. These process documents and any other information needed should be located in a central location that is accessible by everyone. Develop a Prioritized Assignment Plan After your processes have been documented and you've created a system for sharing that information, you will need to think through your top delegation priorities and how you will assign, track and manage the delegated work. Focus on your biggest priorities first. You can identify a list of potential high-priority delegation items by answering these two simple questions:
1. Does this need to be completed now? 2. Do I need to do this task myself or can someone else? Use Technology Technology can make delegation easy and help
teams overcome many different challenges. And all teams can benefit from using technology, whether it's for file sharing, scheduling or even online training opportunities. If you are building a virtual team with members in different geographic locations, technology can make it feel like all of your team members are sitting in the same room. Explore the technology you have available to you before delegating so you can create a system that makes information sharing and collaboration easy. Communicate Well and Often Good communication is vital for every type of team. Without it, there isn't a team. When it comes to effective delegation, not only does communication need to be clear, concise and consistent, but you also need to make sure each team member has access to the same information. One of the ways to accomplish this is by scheduling ongoing face-to-face meetings, or team-focused teleconferences, if your team members are in different locations.
On June 30, the Michigan Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 166, a bill introduced that I introduced to eliminate the state’s Driver Responsibility program. The Senate amended the bill to eliminate keep portions of the bill that penalize the most egregious traffic violations, while eliminating many of the lower level offenses that trigger a Driver Responsibility fine. For many years I have worked to end the draconian Driver Responsibility program. This terrible program was created as an alleged “quick and easy” fix to the state’s budget problems, but it failed to generate the money promised. Instead of making Page 7

Cultivate Trust Trust is one of the most important factors when it comes to delegation, and it goes both ways. You need to trust that your team members will complete the work they are responsible for, and your team members need to trust that you are giving them all of the information they need to do the work and that you will be available to back them up when necessary.
difficult decisions the Legislature and Governor tried to balance the budget on the backs of working families that cannot afford an additional draw on their limited resources. I was truly humbled by the outpouring of support by my colleagues in passing Senate Bill 166 to make sweeping changes to the Driver Responsibility program. The bill does not eliminate the program completely, but eliminates all but the worse violations that trigger a fine. While we have more work to do to eliminate the program completely in the future, this legislation has moved us closer to that ultimate point. The amended SB 166 retains fines for the most serious driving violations, including operating while intoxicated, hit and run
TLIGHT accidents, fleeing and eluding police, and reckless driving. The changes passed by the Senate eliminate fines assessed for people accruing seven or more points on their driving record, driving without insurance or without proof of insurance, and driving without a license. Senate Bill 166 now advances to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Many constituents have asked for information on the recently enacted fiscal year 2011-12 budget and how it compares to other years’ budgets. Is Your Business Likeable? A Review of Dave Kerpen’s Social Media Book By: Anita Campbell Source: smallbiztrends.com
He begins the book by telling the story of waiting in the check-in line at the trendiest hotel in Las Vegas. Frustrated, he pulled out his BlackBerry and tweeted about the unpleasantness of waiting for an hour. He got a return tweet — from a competitor of that hotel. Dave then writes, “Guess
Over at a private online-business forum where I am a Moderator, the members regularly discuss social media. About once every 60 days someone will start a thread that ends up as a referendum on the same question:
What you’ll learn from this book are nuts and bolts about how to harness Facebook and Twitter for marketing purposes, to build a brand and deepen customer loyalty. I liked this book because of the many practical marketing examples and how-tos. The book always starts with strategic objectives — but doesn’t stop there. It tells you what you need to do to accomplish your objectives. Here is what I found especially valuable:
“Is social media a waste of time for businesses?” Those discussions always end the same way. Some people are convinced of social media’s value. Others flatly declare that “real businesses don’t get any real value from social media.” Still others are confused and aren’t sure what to think. If the jury is still out on social media in your mind, then I recommend you read Likeable Social Media. Author Dave Kerpen answers the question about social media’s business value on the very first page.
That opening story is an example of the kind of practical insights you will get from Likeable Social Media: How to Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, and Be Generally Amazing on Facebook (& Other Social Networks). As the title indicates, the book is primarily about Facebook, with a healthy dose of Twitter for good measure. There are references, for sure, to other social sites such as LinkedIn. But mostly those are in passing or lumped in at the end.

Chamber TUF Testimonial We purchased 2 TUF bands. There have been occasions when we have used both at the same time (ie. Market House bakery with 2 children each getting a treat, dinner out with free dessert with meal purchase). We have had nothing but great service from the vendors that are offering the discounts when we use them. We have seemed to keep our shopping very local. Whenever I need anything new, I always whip out my list of discounts for the month and go from there (ei. Baker Propane, G&G Glass) . We have saved at least $250.00 with our bands so far and I would love to see the program continue. On certain days we go out with our TUF band list and just go where the discounts are. We find so many new places that we might not have tried if they weren't on the list and we absolutely love them (ie. Johnny T's with kids, Broadstreet Downtown with the "pretty" chairs and kids). I love to save money, support the schools with TUF band purchases, and BUY LOCAL. Thank you for the opportunity to purchase these bands for $10.00 each. Have a great day and God bless. Anyone responsible for marketing or social media in a company … business-to-business or business-to -consumer. I also recommend it for entrepreneurs trying to grow their businesses on a shoestring. At first when I saw the book (a Kindle review copy) and the clients that were acknowledged (several mega-brands), I wondered how relevant this book would be for small businesses. I needn’t have worried. At least 85% of the examples are ones any size business can employ — even on the tiniest marketing budget. This isn’t about big glitzy campaigns you can never hope to replicate. It’s about jumping feet first into social media — doing what you can with what you have. It’s about how to use social media, especially Facebook, without the big budget or the huge staff. Check out Likeable Social Media at your favorite book retailer.
