ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

BRINGING THE COMMUNITY OF FOOD PROTECTION TOGETHER TO PROTECT THE HEALTH OF THE WORLD.

Established in 2009, the Global Food Protection Institute (GFPI) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to protecting the world’s food supply through FDA-aligned training, advancing new food technologies and convening forums for the transformative exchange of ideas about food protection. GFPI provides an overarching intellectual and organizational umbrella that empowers its three distinct food protection initiatives: “Today” – Build training systems, provide evidence-based curriculum, and deliver training for U.S. and international public and private sector food safety professionals that spans their entire career under the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI). “Tomorrow” – Facilitate the development, commercialization, introduction, and adoption of novel food protection technologies under the Technology Initiative. “Beyond” – Convene food industry thought-leaders and innovators to identify and solve pressing issues in food safety, food protection, and food security with our Symposia series. GFPI was founded with the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in collaboration with the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO). Our Mission: To enhance public health by improving the safety of the world’s food supply through training, knowledge production, and technology.

A LETTER FROM THE CEO At the Global Food Protection Institute (GFPI), we’re excited to publish this annual report, and to share the progress we’ve made on our work. Our reputation as a global leader in food safety is growing. I personally spoke at a conference in China attended by food safety professionals from around the world, and we’ve created new international partnerships with countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Armenia in support of an Integrated Food Safety System. I’m also looking forward to joining international leaders in food safety at the 1st Global Food Safety Partnership Conference at the World Bank office in Paris. We held our inaugural Symposium, “Ensuring Safe Food in Dynamic Food Systems” here in Battle Creek, and the event attracted close to 100 guests and speakers from academia, regulatory, industry, and public advocacy groups. Two additional symposia, to be held later in 2012, were also announced. Our Technology Initiative has also been making great strides. We’ve made two seeding investments in technologies that rapidly detect pathogens in food, and also sponsored a business plan competition for food safety innovation. Through our International Food Protection Training Institute, we’ve trained well over two thousand food protection individuals from around the world, and the Training Institute will expand its course offerings over the current years. Our signature course, the Fellowship in Food Protection, welcomed its third cohort to Battle Creek, and in 2012 the program received accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Of course, all of our success would not be possible without the generous help and support from you, our partners. On behalf of all of us at GFPI, thank you!

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Global Food Protection Institute June, 2011 - GFPI appointed Julia Bradsher, Ph.D., MBA as President and CEO. Prior to GFPI, Dr. Bradsher was a non-profit executive in the public health policy, regulation, and advocacy sectors, and she also spent a number of years in the biopharmaceutical industry. With the addition of Dr. Bradsher, the GFPI staff expanded to sixteen. November, 2011- Dr. Julia Bradsher spoke at the China International Food Safety and Quality (CIFSQ) Conference in Beijing, China. Her presentation, “The Training Imperative for an Integrated Food Safety System”, addressed the importance of training as a critical component to ensuring the safety of the global food supply. The CIFSQ Conference brought together top-level food safety professionals from around the world for two intensive days of learning and networking. May, 2012 - GFPI held its inaugural Symposium, “Ensuring Safe Food in Dynamic Food Systems” at the McCamly Plaza Hotel in Battle Creek, MI. The program featured speakers from academia, regulatory, industry and public advocacy groups involved in safer food systems. U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry, joined the conference with a special video message. Two additional Symposia, to be held later in 2012, were also announced: “Preventive Controls and Allergen Management in the Manufacturing Environment” and “Food Safety Innovations in Transportation and Logistics”. Technology Initiative February, 2012 - GFPI awarded initial investments in two innovative startup companies that have developed products that rapidly detect pathogens in food. Seattle Sensor Systems and nanoRETE, Inc. were selected from over 40 companies. Seattle Sensors utilizes a portable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology for the detection of biohazards in food and the environment. nanoRETE, Inc. provides real-time detection of pathogens using customized nanoparticle biosensors. June, 2012 - GFPI and Great Lakes Entrepreneur’s Quest awarded $10,000 to Micro Techno Solutions, winner of a business plan competition for ventures in food safety. Micro Techno Solutions is developing a new, inexpensive antimicrobial packaging material to serve as a biologically safe transportation aid to prevent contamination of raw fruit, vegetables, and eggs by foodborne diseases introduced by workers or delivery personnel.

June, 2011 - IFPTI began the new year by receiving the 2011 Food Safety Leadership Trendsetter Award from NSF International, an organization that has been helping improve human health on a global scale since 1944. IFPTI received this prestigious award based on its significant training accomplishments in less than two years. July 2011 - IFPTI met with food protection officials from around the world to discuss training in the integrated food safety system. The group, which represented 15 countries, toured IFPTI as part of the annual “International Food Safety Short Course” sponsored by Michigan State University. Participants represented Barbados, Chile, Columbia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peoples Republic of China, and Saudi Arabia. August, 2011 - Senator Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited IFPTI to highlight the importance of the work being done in Michigan to protect our nation’s food supply. September, 2011- IFPTI received a multi-year grant of $1.3 million per year from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Through this competitive grant, IFPTI assumed a crucial role in helping FDA implement the national food-training infrastructure mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act. IFPTI was charged with developing an inventory of training courses in the U.S., developing and delivering standards-based training programs not currently offered, and building an Instructor Development Center. Under the grant, IFPTI and FDA also began revamping a number of core FDA food safety training courses. October, 2011- IFPTI delivered two training sessions titled “Application of the Basics of Inspection and Investigation” in Macon, GA to more than sixty regional food inspectors, at no direct cost to state and local food protection agencies. The three-day training sessions were designed to be the classroom component of basic food safety inspector training, covering topics such as food sample collection, investigating foodborne illnesses, and risk-based inspection techniques.

May, 2012 - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder welcomed a delegation of senior government food protection officials from China to IFPTI as part of an in-depth training program titled “Leadership in Global Food Protection”. This was the first of many planned international training programs to be delivered in Battle Creek that are the direct result of Snyder’s trade mission to China in September, 2011. June, 2012 - Gerald Wojtala, Executive Director of IFPTI, was awarded the 2012 Harvey W. Wiley Award at the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) 116th Annual Educational Conference. The Harvey W. Wiley Award is presented annually to an AFDO member who has demonstrated outstanding service and devotion to the administration of food, drug, and consumer protection laws of our country. June, 2012 - The Fellowship in Food Protection: Applied Science, Law, and Policy, the signature training program of IFPTI, received accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI is a private, nonprofit organization that oversees the development of standards for products, services, processes, systems and personnel in the U.S. The Fellowship in Food Protection program was established in 2010, and was designed to provide experienced food regulatory professionals with critical-thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills within the framework of food regulatory science, law, and policy. The Fellowship is a year-long program, and includes three week-long sessions held at IFPTI in Battle Creek. The 2011-2012 Fellows also conducted research projects during the year, and presented their findings at the 2012 AFDO Annual Education Conference in Providence, RI.
