You’ll see throughout Blunter Zine that many of the photos are being shot by StepChild team riders. Many times throughout the year it was hard for us to find a photographer so we bought a camera and started shooting our own photos. For this Stian interview Joe Sexton Shot all of the photo sequences.

How did you start riding for stepchild? Hmmm, it was the first winter I came out to the states about 5 years ago. I had just quit riding for Burton the previous fall and I had teamed up with Sean Kearns & Roberta Rodger at Infamous and they had some ties to this seemingly unknown Stepchild Company at the time. They thought it would be good for my “image”. And now I’m here, go figure.

Why did you quit Burton or more importantly why the fuck did you ever ride for them? Haha, good question! Umm, well my brother at the time, was huge on the Burton team and this was when Burton was still cool in my eyes, and he decided to bring me to the famous Hemsedal Sessions that happened every spring in the early 2000’s. This one went down in the spring of 2003. I was scared shitless cause the jumps we’re so fucking big compared to what I had hit earlier. I seriously thought I wasn’t going to make it out of there in one piece. But anyways, I came out of it alive and after a couple of months I got hooked up and thought I was heading for fame, fortune and most importantly easy punani. But after a year on Burton I was finished with school and Planet Earth had approached me earlier in the winter and they wanted me on their squad. I told them I had to wait to when my contract was up. And as soon as it was up, I had either a chance to go the states with Planet Earth and keep snowboarding or stay in my brother’s shadow on Burton and get raped like a lot of Burton riders get. The choice was obvious.

What’s the hardest thing about filming a video part? Hardest thing is being away from Norway and all my friends back home. You really start to miss everyone and just hope that you make it through the season alive, cause you never know what’s going to happen when you go out into the backcountry. But I also miss the girls! Norway’s got the hottest chicks in the world. I know everyone says that about their country, but they’re usually full of shit when they say it, cause their so jealous about chicks being hotter in other countries. But I’m not lying. Go out for one night in either Bergen or Oslo Norway, and you’ll probably see more hot chicks that one night than you’ve seen your entire life. Another thing, they’re easy and they’re not fucking stupid like a lot a girls in for example, So-Cal. Some girls in So-Cal are among the far dumbest and most un-enlightened human beings I’ve ever met. They think Norway has the same problems with Viking’s, like the US has problems with Mexicans. That’s just one quote. Lamest thing someone in the snowboard industry ever said to you? “Don’t worry, this is going to be a long term relationship” With snowboarding being the industry of broken promises, what promises have sponsors or people broken with you? Not even going to go into it… Do you and your brother get a lot of Norwegian pussy in Norway? I think we get the same amount of pussy like every other Norwegian. We’re not celebrities or anything like that outside the snowboard scene. In the snowboard scene there’s more puss thrown at you, but seriously, who the fuck wants to dive in on chicks that wear the same clothes as guys, wear stinky socks, stinky

boots, stinky gloves, smelly outerwear, act like guys, and have goggle tans? Not me, that’s who… Girls should dress like girls and most importantly act like girls. Shit, put in some fake titties if that makes you feel more like of a woman.

Do they shave their pussies much? pushing it. If you want to know more, Yes, and it’s the only way it should be! call him up and ask HIM about it, he’ll give you the scoop on what happened (Do you like hair in your food?) with Burton, I’m not in any position to What’s the fattest chick you ever speak on that… slept with? I’m pretty picky when it comes to chicks How many double back 10,s did you man, it doesn’t matter how drunk try before stomping it? or how stupid I am, I’m not bringing This is one Gay question. home a whale. No offence All of the footage we have seen Have you ever banged a chick that of you seems to be heavy jump footage-have you ever hit street your brother banged first? Yeah I have actually. This Summer, rails? Do you respect the urban hah. My friend started putting the aspect of snowboarding? thought into my head when we we’re I have hit street rails, but that’s a looong going to go party, cause he had told me time ago, before a lot of you were even earlier that she thought I was cute, but born. I’m not that old, but it just seems too young for her. So I started playing like the young one’s these days only hit with the thought. After diving into a rails. After I broke my collarbone on a couple more beers, guess who sends stupid park rail in Mammoth a couple me a text? The girl of course! And she years ago I stopped hitting them. Now I asks me if I was going out that night. just look at them as trash sitting in the I sent a message to my brother cause middle of a run in the park. I usually he was in New Zealand for the first trip just ollie over or spray them. with YES and I asked if it was ok. He But as far the urban aspect of didn’t answer, so I took that as any snowboarding, I respect it big time, other would on a night like that and dudes are fucking sick and some of the went home to her place when the bars shit some guys do is crazy. But it doesn’t closed. A couple days later he calls mean I like it. I honestly think it’s boring me and just laughs through the phone to watch and I could just as well put cause he thought the text I sent him in a skate video instead, but I don’t. I usually skip the rail parts when I watch was classic a snowboard movie because it doesn’t Tell us how your brother’s new give me any satisfaction watching it or deal YES is going and why he quit listening to the grinding sounds. Burton? (After calling my brother), So my brother says his YES thing is going way better than anyone working with the company could have hoped for. It kind of seems like they have the same hype as what Stepchild has had the last couple of years. But also helps having 3 HUGE names behind the company

Do you think there is a difference to how you viewed pro snowboarding as a kid and how you view it now? There’s a huge difference. When I was a kid, all snowboarding was to me was going to a resort and ride and have fun and don’t think about anything. If my girlfriend had cheated on me with some other dude, I’d go snowboarding and I’d get it out of my system and never think about it again. It was a nice kind of therapy and I thought being pro was just the same only with some cash in my pocket and free gear. Today I know how much bullshit there is in snowboarding, how much hard work, how many hater’s there are, how many fake fucks there are, how many broken promises there are, how many 4am wake up calls there are, how many shitty hotels there are, how much traveling there is, how much frustration there is. But the biggest difference, how much more fun it is to ride deep pow than to ride an icy park kicker. What is one thing that the general public will never understand about your job? That style is a big part of it. People in the general public only know what the mainstream media portray’s snowboarding to be, and it’s really sad. World records, how many title’s you’ve won, how many flips you can do in one jump and how many mph your going towards a jump or through the Boarder-X course is basically what it’s all come down too.

Besides riders, well some of them, what people in the snowboard industry put in the most hours? Team manager’s and filmers and some photographer’s put in the most hours in my eyes. Some photographer’s can be so fucking unpredictable and lazy, but lucky for me I’ve only met 1 or 2 of those. It’s a team effort when your out there so you’d like everyone to be on the same page. Do you think Terje has whack style? If not then who does? NO, Terje doesn’t have wack steez. Anyone who thinks that is a fucking retard man. Look at his Method’s, his mctwists, the way he rides his board PERIOD. People I think have wack steez: - Shaun White (but those Front.5 Stale’s he does in the pipe are fucking siiiiiiick) - Chaz Guldemond If you could ride like one snowboarder who would it be? Fuck, I have no clue. Rick McCrank or Knut Eliassen… Who is your favorite pro skater and why? I haven’t had a favorite pro skater since the last skate video I watched. That was Es Menikmati. My favorite skater in that movie was Tom Penny cause he has amazing style. Or, maybe Ronnie Creager.

When not snowboarding what are you doing besides reading Men’s fitness? Reading Hustler magazine… But on another note, there’s nothing wrong with Men’s Fitness. It’s a healthy mag with advice on hoes, sex, good workouts, good cooking recipe’s and guidelines on how to live a healthier life. Kind of like a life coach. I’m stoked on that magazine man, and it helps when your out traveling for 6-7 months out of the year, cause you can easily loose yourself in all the shitty road food you eat, traveling from place to place. Besides snowboarding I try and Golf as much as I can. It’s so fucking frustrating. The other day I missed a put from 1 foot, could you imagine missing a hole from that close? And when I start to get the hang of it, the winter usually sets in and I get put back at square one. It’s bullshit. I used to skate a bunch when I was younger but not too much anymore. I have a mean fakie 3Flip though. How did you get the nickname “Sticky” and what does it mean? I have no idea how I got that man. People probably thought my name was too hard to pronounce even though it’s easy as fuck. It’s not that hard to say STIAN, (stee-aun). Not STAIN or not STI-ANN. I just quit a couple years ago trying to give my name away when I order a tea at starbucks or some stuff like that. Cause it’s not cool when they yell “STAIN, Green Tea for STAIN” all over the fucking coffee house and you walk up all awkward to get your Green Tea. People look at me and probably think “ I can’t believe his parents named him STAIN”. Sticky means what it means. Doesn’t it? I’m Norwegian man, don’t ask me what sticky means, you can make up an idea what it means cab9 right?

Would you ever ride for a hot dog company? In this day and age, who wouldn’t? Hot-Dog company, Energy Drink sponsor, Health food sponsor, same shit to me man. Fuck, Ryan Sheckler rides for Milk? In my eyes, there’s no such thing as Core left in snowboarding. That word disappeared a couple of years ago when McDonalds had an ad in Transworld. Who is better, Terry Kidwell, George Pappas, Tim Windell, or Mike Ranquet? Everyone on this list was before my time. But I remember Kidwell in the Chi-Vid a couple years ago and he was still rippin’, so I can just imagine what he was doing when he was younger and a couple pounds lighter. Ranquet, well, he had a Pro-Model on Stepchild and I liked his graphic. That’s about it. Who did Chris Roach ride for? I had to Google this one man, hahaha. This dude was before my time, shit, I feel so stupid when you throw these questions at me. But after Googling and reading about him he seems like a dope dude. He’s the Jeff Spiccoli of Snowboarding they say!! If anyone hasn’t seen Fast Times At Ridgemont High, I suggest you go out and get it! And he rode for Santa Cruz, boyyyyaaaahhh A list of the special “NO THANKS”? What’s this?

As result of diving down kink rails like this one, Risto’s last season was plagued with injuries and he tore his knee for the third time in two years. He’ll throw himself down anything and doesn’t give a fuck about too much. Stay away from the Finnish Cuddle Wale while you are recovering.

Fredu is one of the StepChild OG riders and has been riding for StepChild since day one. He has yet to spend a whole season in North America and makes due with whatever terrain he can while riding in his hometown of Helsinki.
