QUIZ INSIDE FALL/WINTER 2012-13 VOL 4 - ISSUE 3 WWW.BLUNTERMAG.XXX

GRAVEYARD OF THE PACIFIC After Summer Snowboard camps Joe and Simon wanted to head out and do some ocean fishing. We went to a small fishing and logging town on the west coast of Vancouver Island called Port Renfrew. We put the boat in at the Port Renfrew Marina and headed out to the Swiftsure Bank, which is the entrance to a body of water known as the Straight of Juan De Fuca. In the sailing days from the late 1800’s to around 1930 there were almost 150 shipwrecks. Sailor slang for this area was “The Graveyard of the Pacific”. If you get into trouble there is nowhere to beach your boat safely with the jagged and rocky coastline, mixed with dense fog banks, and massive ocean swells. The weather out there can change for the worse in minutes so you’ve got to really watch things and keep on your toes. The Swiftsure Bank is about a 90 minute run before you can drop the lines in for some high action trolling. The best fishing is right in the middle of the shipping lane. On foggy days you have to watch your radar screen more than your rods. The Last thing you want is a 300ft bulk carrier ship run you down. Those things look like they are moving slow because of how big they are but some are doing 25 knots. In a little 21-foot sport fishing boat you would be like a fly on the windshield. The risk of collision out there is a true reality. Simon and Joe have always been into fishing in the small lakes around their hometowns for Bass, Muskie and Trout. Simon’s father is a fish biologist so fishing has been in his blood his whole life. Joe fishes for Lake Bass in Minnesota almost every day in the summer. Simon and Joe both have quite a passion for fishing so I wanted to get them to experience the ocean and try to land them on some big fish. Salmon up to 50 pounds have been caught here and Halibut in this area can reach over 200lbs. On a side note the word record for halibut is in the 400lbs range and was caught up in Alaska. For the first few hours of our fishing trip we played it safe and fished the shallower waters close to the shore. It was pretty dead for the first hour as far as fishing goes. When the fish aren’t biting there is still lots to see. This place is a true nature wonderland. Humpback Whales and Orcas swim right up beside the boat. There are Eagles everywhere, occasional Bears on the shoreline and a herd of Roosevelt Elk that live in the area too.

Fishing here can be slow and then out of nowhere the bite will be on. It wasn’t long before Joe had his first Chinook Salmon on the line. The most important thing to remember is that these are big and heavy fish and the fight can last for up to an hour. You can’t just reel it in the boat. You have to play it in slow and let it take all the line it wants to when it wants to or it will just bust of. The only way to get one of these in the boat is to tire it out first with lots of finesse, give and take. When the fish is resting between sprints you reel it in. When it takes off again you gotta let it run. Joe’s lake fishing experience paid off and within 20 minutes he had his first 24lbs Salmon in the boat.

I’m sure he was over me screaming, “Let it run! Let in run!” at the top of my lungs for the whole fight but he did very well and got it up beside the boat for me to net it in. Seeing the smile on Joe’s face when he saw that Salmon in the net was priceless. Simon lost one of his Salmon to a hungry Sea Lion that stole his fish right off the line. After a few more fish in the boat for Simon and Joe we pulled up the lines and headed out to the Swiftsure Bank for more Salmon and a chance at some Halibut. With Salmon fishing we troll with the small motor on the back of the boat.

TOP LEFT: Going out to Sea TOP RIGHT: an eagle flies above the boat: BOTTOM: Black Bear and two Eagles

TOP: An Orca swims up by the boat BOTTOM: Near Carmanah lighthouse is a Sea Lion colony. They are the nemesis of every fisherman and are known for stealing fish right off the line.

TOP LEFT: Roddin’ BOTTOM RIGHT: While fishing for halibut we reeled up this octopus. It let go of the line when it got to the boat. BOTTOM LEFT: Great seeing these big ships on clear and sunny days. Only hearing these ships on foggy days can get pretty scary. Don’t worry Mrs. Sexton we have radar.

For halibut fishing we usually anchor up, depending on the tides, or we shut off the motors and just drift. The gear and technique for Halibut fishing is much different than that for Salmon fishing. The Halibut rods are much stronger and shorter and the line is strong and braided. With halibut being a bottom fish, you drop your weighted line and bait to the bottom of the ocean and wait. The tides and currents have to be moving slow enough to get your gear to the bottom. Usually within a few minutes of the bait hitting the bottom the rod will start getting a few small tugs and then will bend so much you’ll think its going to break. Simon’s rod was the first to start getting little hits until a whopping rod bender and hook up. After a grueling 45 minutes of pulling the monster up off the bottom, Simon had himself a 67lbs halibut in the boat. With a fish that size you have to harpoon it on a rope and then club it outside the boat to kill it before you bring it on board for your own safety. Many fishermen have learned the hard way on this with broken bones, black eyes and concussions.

Halibut is known as white gold in this area. At $20 per pound market value it’s the highest action gold panning you’ll ever do. The meat is tender, juicy and just melts in your mouth. Just after we got Simon’s Halibut on the boat, Joe had some action on his line too and reeled up his first Halibut. It wasn’t as big as Simon’s but was still a very nice fish. Throughout the day we caught some nice Red Snappers and a few Ling Cod too. At about 3PM the west wind was typically starting to pick up so we decided to head in and get some dinner. We spotted a pod of about 7 Humpback Whales on the way in to the marina. We sat and watched them with the motor off for a good ten minutes before firing up

the engines and continuing on to retrieve the crab traps we dropped that morning. We had several nice ones in there but decided to let them all go because of all of the fish we had. At shore there is a restaurant that will cook you your catch for a small fee. We took Joe’s ling cod in for a massive feast of fish and chips. It doesn’t get much fresher than that. At dinner it felt like we all just had an amazing day on the mountain but instead of being covered in snow we were all covered in blood and fish guts. You haven’t experienced true fishing until you’ve hit the ocean on a good day.

Simon: Usually they are way bigger and much heavier so they are a really good fight. I caught a big Muskie in a lake though and it was similar to a Salmon fight, but I would say all ocean fish are a way better fight! The Muskie has large sharp teeth and can bite through a finger. A small lake fish can feel big if you have a small rod but in the ocean you are fishing with bigger gear and sometimes you think you’ve caught the bottom but then the fish will go for a long run and you know Blunter: In what ways is fishing similar to you’ve hooked a monster. snowboarding? Blunter: Any advice you can give to someone Simon: It can be a waiting game, sometimes that is going to start fishing? your grinding for a while and you don’t catch Simon: Look behind you before you cast. Also research fish you get that same adrenalin rush you do the area you are going to be fishing and always check the weather and sea report. when you stomp a good trick. Simon: It is just sketchy if you don’t have the right equipment, and if a storm comes you’re screwed. The weather changes so quick out there-one minute you are enjoying the sunshine and the next its foggy, windy and raining sideways with rough seas. Where we were fishing it was all pretty deep trolling. So you have to trust your driver and tie your bait right or you won’t catch anything. The fish are bigger and so is the danger.

Blunter: Yeah it’s pretty rad landing those Blunter: How many years have you been big ones! How big was that Salmon you fishing? caught? Simon: My Dad is an avid fisherman and has Simon: I think it was 28 pounds. It was sick! worked in fisheries for decades, so as soon I almost lost it too, it freaking jumped out the as I could hold a rod I have been fishing, so probably 25 years, I think. Ha-ha! net.

Blunter: OK I have 3 questions for you and its called fishing lure or sex toy. When I say the name you say “sex toy” or “fishing lure”. First one: Tassel Lizard? Simon: Lure. Blunter: Correct! Next one Little Zinger? Simon: Lure. Blunter: WRONG! Simon: Really! I need that sex toy then, ha-ha! Blunter: Next One: Dink Jig. Simon: Both. Blunter: Nope! Choose one! Simon: Lure. Blunter: YES! Two out of three aint bad. How did you get the hook out of your eyebrow? Simon: Pliers it was a three prong hook and 2 of the prongs with barb got in there good. I was fishing for Pickerel at night. Blunter: Will you fish for the rest of your life? Simon: Yeah, for sure. Some of my favorite memories are from fishing.

TOP: A family of Orcas approach the boat. BOTTOM: Simon with a 28lbs Chinook Salmon. Note the big tanker in the back ground

TOP: Frog v Fish BOTTOM: A Orca swins past the coastline

BLUNTER: In what ways is fishing similar to snowboarding? JOE: I guess patience is the first thing that comes to mind. Waiting for it to snow or searching for spots is pretty similar to waiting for a fish to bite or finding a good zone where there might be fish. Also the feeling is pretty similar when you get a good trick on film that you are psyched on and pulling in a big bass! Blunter: How does fighting a Salmon differ from fighting a lake Bass? Joe: Its so different, bass you set the hook hard and crank it in, whereas with Salmon you have to carefully set the hook. Too hard and it’ll rip right out of their mouth. Then you aren’t just reeling in the fish, you have flashers, downrigger clips currents, waves it’s so different. You also have to let the Salmon run for a while and then reel in when it gets tired. It really is two totally different things. It took me a while to catch on to catching Salmon because I was playing it more like a Bass. Blunter: What is the biggest lake Bass you have ever caught? Joe: Right around the 7 lbs mark. Blunter: That’s a decent size. What do you think is the sketchiest thing about ocean fishing? Joe: Currents, waves, fog, tides and even other boats. Not just small sport fishing boats but huge tankers too. There are a lot more factors that come into play while ocean fishing. On a lake things are a little more calm and peaceful. Blunter: Yeah the ocean is definitely more hectic. How big was your first Salmon? Joe: it was like 24 lbs. It was an awesome!

Blunter: Tell me about the feeling you get when you land a big fish in the boat compared to landing a new trick on your snowboard. Is it similar or totally different? Joe: It’s pretty similar each one has its own build up process. I would say you can control a little bit more snowboarding because its you doing it and you can’t necessarily control when a fish bites or not. Landing a fish and landing a trick feels pretty similar to each other sometimes! Ha-ha! Blunter: Will you still be fishing when you are 65? Joe: For sure! Blunter: What kind of snowboarding will you be doing when you are 65? Joe: Cruising and trying to re live the glory days. Blunter: Any advice you can give to people that may want to start fishing? Joe: Some people hate it and some people love it but I guarantee that if you go fishing and catch a good fish you can’t wipe the smile off your face. Blunter: What are some of the weirdest fishing lure names you know? Joe: Sweet Beaver, White Trash, Ball Breaker, Barely Legal Vixen, Mini Skirt, School Girl, Swamp Donkey. Those are all real lure names! Blunter: Why do most of the fishing lure names sound like sex toys? Joe: I don’t know maybe lonely fisherman come up with the names. Blunter: Yeah I like the pud puller....
