PRESIDENT’S FORUM Michael Pohlmann, President, Porsche Club of America Upper Canada Region

A

s we approach the end of summer, I’m reminded how quickly time slips away from us. I am already heading into my 10th month as your UCR President. Thank you to all of our members for reaching out to me with suggestions for improving our club. I also welcome feedback on what is working and not working for you. All ideas are shared and discussed at the monthly Board of Directors meeting. Our recent Club Race at CTMP in early August was another great success. Thank you to Terry Cassan and Jackie Metcalfe for their excellent planning and execution of the event. As always thank you to all our dedicated volunteers. Although attendance was slightly down from last year due to competing events, we had tremendous positive feedback including “best event yet” by several participants. In the past I have participated in many Concours events and this year, while I’m still participating, I am really looking forward to also being a judge. I completed my “schooling” a few weeks ago along with 11 others. Thank you to Bruce Farrow and Randy Gananathan for their excellent training and insight. I encourage anyone interested in showing their beautiful Porsche to enter the Concours on September 1st. For beginners, you’ll discover, preparing a car for the judged category goes beyond just washing your vehicle. It can take weeks of preparation and by doing so one can really appreciate the time and effort it takes to bring a car to a high level. It can also be a frustrating endeavour and I have found over the years to keep calm and approach it in segments. Breaking down detailing into components such as exterior body, engine, storage area, interior, glass, wheels, wheel wells, and concentrating on one area at a time definitely helps. Once you have prepared your car, it will be easier to maintain going forward. If you do not want to enter the judged category then I encourage you to enter the Show & Shine category. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing a large number of Porsches displayed together. As we head into the Autumn, we still have various events planned. We try to keep our members updated on our website but occasionally events come up or get altered. We hope you appreciate the regular “eblast” email that Kathleen Wong sends out to keep us all up-to date. As you may know, some UCR members are off to Germany in Mid-September to visit Porsche Stuttgart, Oktoberfest in Munich, historic towns and the IAA in Frankfurt. The IAA is the largest automobile show in the world occurring every two years and is quite the event! Stefan Walther has organized and is leading this inaugural trip. I wish everyone a great time and look forward to some excellent articles and photos for future Provinz issues.

Along with our own club events, we have a couple of nonUCR events happening in September that definitely require mention. The annual Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance takes place September 14 & 15 at Cobble Beach resort on beautiful Georgian Bay, just north of Owen Sound. The event is organized by fellow UCR member Rob McLeese and his team. The automobiles are presented on the Cobble Beach Golf Course, the perfect backdrop to some of the most beautiful and rarest automobiles in the world. Porsche Canada is a title sponsor and a number of beautiful Porsches are expected. We are planning on having a UCR club area and if you are interested in attending please let me know. It definitely is worth the drive! Porsche Cars Canada has organized several activities throughout the final Porsche GT3 Cup Canada race at Mont Tremblant, Quebec for the September 28 & 29 race weekend. The event “Destination Porsche” will have special infield parking for PCA members, Porsche Classic displays, driving tours, and a social evening. Porsche dealerships from across Canada entered a contest to restore a classic Porsche and these cars will be on display with the winners chosen during the weekend. Our friends at Rennsport Region have taken the lead on volunteering activities at the event. The price for the event is the cost of a weekend ticket for the Mont Tremblant race. There may be separate costs for any Porsche-only social activities. Stay tuned for further information, regarding registration and a potential Porsche convoy to the event on September 27th from Toronto via Ottawa. Watch the website and eblasts for more! October 8th sees us back at Porsche Centre Oakville for our monthly Social. These dealer events are very popular with our members and we truly appreciate the hospitality and value our relationship with all the Porsche centres. Another special thank you to the team at Porsche Centre Oakville for being this year’s title sponsor of the UCR Concours. Our annual Awards Banquet is Saturday October 26th at the Islington Golf and Country Club. This popular evening recognizes membership milestones as well as the announcement of “Enthusiast of the Year”. This year’s guest speaker is Lucas Scarfone, Publisher of Autostrada magazine. This upscale magazine, issued quarterly, focuses on the passion, history and journey of people within the automotive industry. Please book early on clubregistration. net as the event does usually sell out. Have a great September and see you at an event soon.

ooking through this September issue of Provinz, I’m once again inspired by UCR’s activity level. This racing issue highlights the 2019 Can Am Challenge Club Race sponsored by Pfaff and held at Mosport. The front cover displays the pace car leading the pack with the centerfold highlighting the closeness of the race itself. I feel the adrenaline just looking at the pictures! I still have a call out for technical writers and articles, either as a ‘one off’ or as part of a series/on going basis – the period to be determined by you, the writer. Please share your technical experience with our readers and enjoy the spotlight in our newsletter. Have you been enjoying summer with your car? Nick Nicolaou snapped this moose in the picture below wishing it could drive a Porsche. By the look on this one’s face, I’m curious what Nick caught that moose up to with his Porsche. Just what does it think it’s going to do? If you have any photos you wish to share with unusual Porsche happenings, please send them in. I’ll feature them in Provinz.

THE WAY WE WERE... 30 Years Ago Scott Goodyear appeared in the Pfaff ad as Turbo Cup Champion driver. Parade was at Grand Traverse Resort, Michigan, and Upper Canada was a hoot. Road-kill hats and toques, flags and copious Canadian beer, along with team prep of a new red 944 cabrio, now called Flitzer. UCR was dubbed Region of the Year. Rally awards went to Metcalf, Pateman, Pegg and von Bose. Rosemary Adam trophied in Tech Quiz. Membership was approaching 600. DE was $65 for a single weekday day at Shannonville. The November Victory Banquet was $45 and guest speaker was PCA President Dennis Thovson.

25 Years Ago Rick Dean went to Montreal’s Canadian Grand Prix; The Jensens promoted a Fall Colours Rally with brunch at Millcroft Inn. Lake Placid Parade had a champagne breakfast hosted by the Whitnells. Rosemary Adam won the Porsche AG trip to Europe and was recipient of Tech Quiz & 5K Run trophies. Parade autocross awards went to von Bose, Jones and Kurnick. The Jensens won tires.

20 Years Ago Scott Gerard became a new member while Greg Doff and Stephen Goodbody achieved 10 years and Rob Linder 5 years. President Van Atter became a DE instructor. Van Atter reported on the presentation of $13.5k to Children’s Wish, our designated charity. Ken Jensen was back at DE after a two year hiatus and parked under the tree, next to JVA, then as now. The Ashcroft/Zuppan rally was a big hit. Radio personality Erin Davis was guest speaker at the Awards Banquet ($65 registration). Bill Comat’s 968 was for sale – Scott Gerard bought it. The Mont Tremblant Parade review had trophies for Rosemary Adam (Tech Quiz & 5K Run), Maria Corville (Tech Quiz). UCR was honoured for its charitable work. Cray Scarlett and Andy Hunt added a lot of zing to the Parade Goodie Store.

orsche Parade 2019 took place July 21-27, 2019, at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in Boca Raton Florida. Parade activities included Concours, autocross, time-speed-distance and gimmick rallies, destination tours, and so much more! There were also a lot of awards given out and Upper Canada Region was the recipient in the following: Botho von Bose’s 50th anniversary 911 won at Concours, Kevin Kurnik and his foursome came in 1st place at the golf tournament with 15 under. The Provinz team led earlier in the year by Randy Gananathan and by Rhonda Rose-Roberts starting with the October edition, won 3rd place in the PCA newsletter contest. The three chosen editions for entry were July, October and December 2018. Another multiple winner at Parade was Debbie Pogue who won a raffle draw for a US$10,000 Autobahn Adventure certificate at Porsche Parade. Debbie also won 2nd Place in the Art Show – Fibre Art. She spent 208 hours knitting the Porsche logo. Another lucky draw winner was Lillian Kurnik who won a set of Pirelli tires at the Parade Welcome Banquet.

Under the astute direction of past Editor, Randy Gananathan and with the capable guidance of Rhonda Rose-Roberts, our present Editor (since October 2018), the UCR Provinz team won its latest award, 3rd place in the PCA Newsletter contest.

SOCIAL EVENTS

U

CR’s Socials are designed to warmly welcome all club members, new and existing, and to help our members get involved. As the saying goes, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!” At each Social, you can meet many like-minded Porsche owners who are just as passionate about their cars as you are, perhaps more so! Socials start at 6:30pm, but some members like to get there earlier. The Golf Club Socials usually start at 7pm. We have elegant sit-down dinners and interesting after-dinner speakers. Please check Provinz and UCR’s website for the latest information. If you know someone who may be of interest to our members as a speaker, please let us know. And if you have any other comments or suggestions regarding UCR’s Socials, let us know that too. You can talk to us at an upcoming Social. Registration: UCR members and guests must register for socials via www.ClubRegistration.net . The cut-off for registration is 11pm on the Sunday before each event. When registering, please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions and if you are a new member or first-time Social attendee. Register early, as the number of attendees is essential for catering purposes. Using ClubReg is quite easy, but if you’d prefer to follow step-by-step instructions, please see: www.pcaucr.org/how-to-register/. If you have any questions, please contact: socials@pcaucr.org

PCA UCR Jets off to Germany!

A

round 80 club members and their guests jumped into their Porsches — and other miscellaneous vehicles — and headed out to Hansa Haus in Mississauga on Aug. 13 to celebrate the first-ever PCA UCR Discover Porsche And Germany Trip, taking place about the time this magazine lands in your mailbox, and we wish those 30 lucky travelers “Bon voyage!” — or more appropriately “Gute Reise!” — as they experience the trip of a lifetime taking in the Frankfurt auto show, Porsche Museum and factory tours in Stuttgart, as well as the big Oktoberfest in Munich. Hansa Haus, a German cultural centre, was the perfect venue for August’s monthly social, serving up an authentic meal — a generous plate of schnitzel and bratwurst, spaetzle with gravy, sauerkraut and red cabbage, starting with a fresh green salad and finishing with delicious Black Forest cake and almond cake. Not to mention the finest German beer that includes your author’s absolute favourite, Erdinger Dunkel. If you cannot find it in your local LCBO, it’s because I got there first. In the works for almost a year and professionally organized and operated by EF Go Ahead Tours, a worldwide company with operations around the globe, the PCA UCR Discover Porsche And Germany Trip is one of a kind, custom designed for our club to meet our specifications and at a very attractive price of approximately $6,000 per person. This price includes Star Alliance return airfare (Air Canada, Lufthansa and the like) from Toronto, 11 nights in four-star hotels that are hand-picked for quality and luxury, all breakfasts, three meals with wine and beer, deluxe motor coach travel, an expert tour director and local guides, as well as sightseeing excursions of Stuttgart, Heidelberg, SEPTEMBER 2019

Provinz SEPTEMBER '19 OUTPUT.indd 13

Nuremburg and Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. EF Go Ahead Tours provides a monetary incentive for PCA UCR to host and sell this tour; this incentive is being reinvested in the trip in the form of a multi-course gourmet meal at Christophorus restaurant at the Porsche Museum, as well as in a paid full-page advertisement earlier this year in Provinz, plus subsidizing this very Aug. 13 social. The trip sold out in four months and some say this momentous event will eclipse the 1969 moon landing in terms of significance to the human race. After our bellies and doggie bags were full but prior to a special trip presentation, PCA UCR President Michael Pohlmann took to the mic to introduce new club members and give them their pins — James Kevin Anderson, Rick and Helen Behling, Lukasz Gilarski and Linda Lau, and Maria Manis. As well, Pohlmann thanked volunteers of several recent big events, such as the Club Race weekend a week earlier, and outlined other big events coming up, such as Concours D’Elegance on Sept. 1. Then it was my turn, I also highlighted and thanked the efforts of our club’s incredible roster of volunteers. I felt a mini pep rally was important at this time of year, the peak of the Porsche driving season, when PCA UCR is holding its biggest, most important events such as Club Race and Concours, a driving tour nearly every weekend, driver education at the track, a monthly social, cars and coffee, autocross and more. So much work from so many people, and for so many months, goes on behind the scenes leading up to one single event. This includes the fine folks putting together this great magazine each month. Our volunteers are exhausted and some are burnt out. “Fueled by volunteers” indeed, some of us were running on fumes. I introduced the “mastermind” behind the Germany trip, my mother Marlene, as well as my father Roland, the person responsible for much of my strong passion for Porsche and Germany. My father was born and raised in Germany and has owned countless great cars, as well as some that are not so great. He’ll admit that last one, too. While I’ve been taking care of many other club

responsibilities, not to mention my regular day job and cat, my mother has been diligently working with EF Go Ahead Tours on this trip, including this evening’s presentation. I also introduced the 22 club members who were in attendance and are jetting off on this fabulous trip in less than a month. They included Kevin Anderson and Alan Lomax who drove in all the way from Sarnia just for this evening. What followed was a wonderful slideshow presentation of the sights and sounds our 30 PCA UCR travelers will enjoy from Sept. 11 to 23. Be sure to check for updates on the club’s social media — Facebook, Instagram and Twitter — as well as back here in Provinz. Until then, Auf Wiederschnitzel!

We had a lot of things to see and do especially as the Porsche factory team pit was located right across from the Porscheplatz tent. The tent is conveniently located near the bridge over the front straight only minutes from the pits. In attendance were Marc Ouayoun (Porsche Canada President) with Lynne Friedman of PCA and Michael Pohlmann, President of UCR. Michael also was given the opportunity to issue the command to “Start Engines”. Also helping this year were Cindy Jacisin, Vice President of PCA and her husband Bob Rath, VP of Chicago region. The Pfaff drivers of the Porsche GTD showed up Saturday morning to answer questions and mingle. Zacharie Robichon, (shown in photo on page 17), had responded to a question about his least favourite corner as being Corner 8. Scott Hargrove who had arrived late and not heard Zac’s response, had responded that Corner eight was his favourite corner which garnered a few laughs.

The Porsche factory drivers also visited again this year. In the picture on page 18, from left to right they are Nick Tandy, Patrick Pilet, Laurens Vanthoors and Earl Bamber. Also present was Kevin Estre (not shown). The winners of the GTLM class were Earl and Laurens. Another activity was a visit to the pits during the race Sunday and the race Saturday. For those who signed up, officials escorted us to the pit wall so that we could be right on top of the action. “When you’re so close to the action you can really begin to appreciate the amount of behind the scenes work that goes into a race team. fter four days of intense Porsche and BMW motorsports action at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Grand Prix track (aka Mosport), I can finally sit down and have a quiet coffee to reflect on the weekend activities. For the Upper Canada Region (UCR) members who did not come out, you missed a fantastic weekend of friendly people, fabulous cars and incredible racing. Kudos to an incredible PCA National team, dedicated volunteers from near and far, skilled drivers from across North America and unusually cooperative Mosport weather. In addition to the drivers, the huge success at the race could not have happened without the support of a few generous sponsors. Thanks to Pfaff Porsche for the generous financial support as well as the beautiful new 991.2 C2S pace car and draw prizes. Sylvester. The Saturday race day included two 30-minute sprint races for PCA Yellow and Red groups and two 30-minute BMW races. It was another great racing day with no serious issues. A bunch of PCA drivers did jump on the whirl around ride when one of the 944 race cars, blew an engine and dumped oil exiting turn 8 during the Yellow Sprint Race 1. Several other cars also had some mechanical issues. The Saturday race day finished with the 6:00 pm racers award banquet, which was sponsored by Porsche Cars Canada at the CTMP Events Centre overlooking the front straight of Mosport. At 7:30pm, Isi Papadopoulos (BMW Club Racer and Past President) presented awards to the BMW Club Racers. Kathleen Wong (UCR President 2017-2018) then wished all enduro racers good luck at the PCA enduro race on Sunday. She also introduced John Tipper, the advocate of 914 Special Interest Group, who arranged for 17 UCR members’ 914s to do parade laps during the lunch hour on Sunday to celebrate the 914 50th anniversary. The parade lap was led by a 914 pace car driven by Mark Gohlke from Texas. Mark was one of the PCA club racers who raced his red and white 914 (#123) at the two red sprint races on Saturday. Kathleen then introduced Lori Schutz, who was one of the two PCA National Scrutineers at the club race. Lori is the daughter of Peter Schutz, who was the President of Porsche AG during the 1980s and he was also named “the Man who saved the 911”. Lori gave a quick inspirational speech about the book “Driving Force: Getting Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People” written by her father. Lori’s speech was well-received by the racers. After Lori’s speech, Bryan Henderson presented PCA National Rookie of the Race award to Phil Leja, and PCA National Novice Racer Award to Jon Dunski. Jackie Metcalfe (Club Race Grid Captain and Volunteer Coordinator) and I presented PCA award certificates to PCA club racers, and Workers Choice award to Jon Dunski. The

ceremony was done together with prize draws of Porsche accessories provided by Pfaff Porsche; UCR T-shirts and jackets donated by UCR Goodie Store which is run by Andy Hunt; and Gulf racing engine oil, gear oil and racing brake fluids and pads donated by Jay Lloyds (14 year UCR member and Classic Porsche Specialist). Sunday August 4 included the third BMW 30-minute sprint race and a 90 minute PCA enduro race. The enduro race is my favourite race of the weekend because of the hot pit action. The race weekend finished with 3 1/2 hours of Advanced Solo Lapping (“ASL”) by a group of extremely dedicated black and red group drivers from our Driver Education program. Congratulations to the following UCR racers for their podium finishes at the 2019 CanAm Challenge Club Races: Yellow Sprint Races and Combined Yellow and Red Enduro Race: 1. for wrangling our volunteers, managing the grid with precision and solving many on-site problems before they develop into real issues. I’d also like to thank our club race photographers – Adrian Chan for taking on-track pictures for the racers award certificates, and Frank Tsang for taking pictures of people at the event and printing the racers award certificates. The huge success of our club race weekend is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the 55 club race volunteers, the sponsors, and the participation by PCA and BMW racers and DE participants. This weekend was a true testament to PCA’s slogan “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” The first sanctioned PCA Upper Canada Region Club Race took place at Mosport in 1996. Next year, we will be hosting the 2020 CanAm Challenge Club Race, the 25th running of our race at Mosport. The schedule dates for this special anniversary event will be announced later this year. As soon as the dates are confirmed, we will forward updating information to all of you. Again, thank you very much for participating in this year’s Mosport race. We hope to see you all again in 2020!

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to PCA National and UCR volunteers, and all drivers and teams for including CanAm Challenge Club Race in their 2019 club race calendar. Special thanks to our PCA National Team – Bryan Henderson (race steward), Keith Fritze and Lori Schutz (scrutineers) and Roland Nieves (timing & scoring) for travelling from the States to volunteer at our event. Bryan told me our 2019 CanAm Challenge club race was one of the best run events he has ever seen and this was the first ever club race that had zero car-to-car contact during his 20 year tenure as a race steward. Congratulations to all the PCA racers that competed at the race! THE PORSCHE A “His and Hers” Porsche Story

Story and photos by Mark Zemel and Isabella Shvarzman, UCR Members

O

ur Porsche story begins 5 years ago with a purchase of a low mileage, pre-owned silver Cayenne from Porsche of London to replace our well used BMW X5. As soon as we started driving that Cayenne, we realized that we found something very special. The way it drove, felt and looked was head and shoulders above any other SUV we’d had before. As part of the purchase, Tim Bamford from Porsche of London introduced us to UCR by covering the first year’s membership. What followed was a love affair with Porsches and a very special relationship with the brand, most Porsche dealers in Ontario and with the PCA Club. In the last 5 years, we’ve owned no less than 7 different Porsches, sometimes as many as 3 at a time. There were 2 Cayennes, a Macan S, a Cayman, and 3 different 911’s. We also put our UCR membership to good use over the last 5 years and attended numerous social events, Porsche launch events, driving tours, one rally, and

the Porsche ski day. We made some good friends through the club as well. It’s amazing how active the UCR chapter is compared to other automotive clubs, all thanks to its volunteers, board members and driving tour organizers and committee chairs. There are dozens of driving tours and social events to choose from. We really enjoy being part of the club. Our teenage kids, Matthew and Emily, also developed an affinity to Porsches, and used the Cayenne in their driver’s education, and even drove it in the Street Survival School. It was quite a sight to watch them drift a full size SUV through the slalom course and skid pad as if it was a sports car. Back in the winter of 2015, a couple of months after the purchase of our first Cayenne, I decided to go for the 911 I always wanted. I figured the winter would be a good time to get a good deal on a 911. While on a ski trip with our

daughter, Emily, I noticed an ad from Porsche of London for a gorgeous 2012 (997.2) Black Edition 911 Carrera with the Aerocup kit and 6 speed manual. Even though there were some pre-owned 991.1 models on the market, this particular black-edition 997.2 was more appealing and the price was right. I called Tim and negotiated a deal with him over the phone to buy the car and pick it up on a dry winter day later on. When the forecast finally turned favourable for a clear winter day, I drove to London to pick up the car. What I failed to account for was that London has a different weather pattern than most of Ontario. It was hit by a heavy snow storm that same evening, which seemed to hit only that city and nowhere else. Driving the Black Edition home on summer tires in a snow storm was an experience even more exciting than driving the car on the racetrack that subsequent summer. After about a year and a half of driving the Black Edition 911, I had a flare up of the AIMP syndrome (Ants In My Pants). I decided that I should try some other sports cars – the 911 was sold, and was replaced with a series of other high performance cars – a BMW M3, a Mercedes Benz C43 AMG, and even an Aston Martin Vantage S, none of which could measure up to the 911’s classic looks, awesome performance, comfort, and all around versatility. Bella and I have realized that there really is no substitute, as the old Porsche tag line goes. I often tell my friends from UCR that I regret selling the Black Edition 911 the most. A couple of months ago, continued on page 34...

in the spring of 2019, I decided that it was time to look for a suitable replacement. After having just purchased a black Cayenne S from Porsche Centre Oakville, I started looking for a newer and better version of a 911. I was after a 4S this time, with PDK, and preferably black in colour to remind me of that special Black Edition car. Porsche Centre Oakville had the biggest selection of pre-owned Carrera 4S’s, and the one that caught my eye was a black 2017 4S with red and black full leather interior – the exact same colour combination as Bella’s Cayenne S. Danny Burkett from Porsche Centre Oakville, who was our sales rep for the black Cayenne S, took me out for a test drive in the 4S, and it fit like a glove. Danny made a joke that I should buy it just to have a matching set of “his and hers” Porsches. This idea

actually appealed to Bella and I, and we decided to go for it. We are now the proud owners of the perfect “his and hers” set of Porsches. These 2 cars look stunning, both finished in black metallic over a red and black leather interior with red stitching. They are by far THE best sports car and SUV that we’ve ever owned, and we can’t possibly imagine what could be a better car to drive. The photos featured here of the “his and hers” cars are with us and our Golden Retriever, Lexi, at our cottage on Buckhorn Lake in the Kawarthas. Like our kids when they were younger, Lexi loves riding in the back of the Cayenne S, especially to the cottage, her favourite place on earth.

TRACKTALK 131

By Dave Osborne, UCR Track Chairman

T

his has been an awesome track season! We’ve done everything from fill our hearts at the driven2smile charity event, to hone our skills on the Driver Development Track in 40 degree weather. It’s been a summer filled with highs followed by more highs. We’ve driven in cold, heat, wind, rain and everything in between and our DE enthusiasts have become better drivers with each new experience. You have to admit, this has been a great season so far. Midway through the summer our Web Master Dixon Chan made some changes to the front page of our website. Often someone would post on the general forum and that post would sit there for months until something new popped up. So what Dixon did for us is create a Driver’s Forum under the Driver Education tab. That makes it easier for you to ask your DE related questions or just interact with other track minded members. So regardless of what your Porsche related question is, don’t hesitate to

post it there. Whichever Track Team member is best suited to answer your questions will respond. If you just want to offer your opinion, or communicate with other drivers, the forum is yours. Many thanks to Dixon for his efforts! September is an important month for our DE program. It’s when a group of Black group drivers, who have successfully completed check-out rides, are invited to participate in Instructor Day. These eager recruits will go through some intensive training to determine if they are up to UCR’s Instructor standards. Those chosen this year will also participate in the National Certification Program to become PCA National Instructors. Successful candidates will be welcomed to teach at any track in North America that hosts PCA events. At UCR we think that having all of our instructors complete the National Program gives our instructors a common teaching standard. That benefits our students with consistent instruction no matter who is assigned to their car. It also opens up positions in the Black run group for the White driver’s advancement.

36 Provinz SEPTEMBER '19 OUTPUT.indd 36

2019-09-05 11:27 AM

While we focus on our instructors in September we shouldn’t forget the incredible team that brings you these amazing events. Your UCR Track Team puts so much effort into them behind the scenes, that despite the large number of participants, the events appear to run seamlessly. Andy Wright, Del Bruce, Tim Sanderson, Graham Jardine, Tim Venturelli, John Adam, Mark Gardiner, Mary Iantorno, Adam Holland, Peter Carroll and Scott Bodo collectively dedicate hundreds of hours per season so you can just show up and enjoy our track events. You can make all of their effort worthwhile by participating and maybe saying thanks when you see them wandering through the paddock. I’m sure they will appreciate it. I’m not a big summer and winter guy. The weather extremes are hard on equipment and drivers, as they add an additional element to performance driving. So with the cooler weather of a long fall, I’ll get far more enjoyment out of our remaining track events. With only two remaining in the 2019 season please take the opportunity to join us on track. It’s your last chance to sharpen your car control skills before you need them to keep you out of a snowy ditch. I’ve had my first really great season with Harvey, my Cayman that’s named for the hurricane it was in. I’ll write a follow up article on its progress when the snow is on the ground and there is nothing else to write about. Just a reminder, that when you get a new credit card and you update Netflix and your phone provider, please

remember to go into your Driver’s Profile and update your information there as well. Our Track Treasurers are volunteers and shouldn’t have to track you down like stalkers in a B-List Horror Movie, just to bring your account current. It’s really not their job. I often look at insurance auction sites to see what kind of minor damage deals are out there. There is a possibility, now that Harvey is sorted out, that I might buy another car to mess with during the winter when I have the most down time. Since I’m also involved in our Driver Education program I sometimes try to make sense of the things I observe on the sites. Trends like Vipers running into the back of things or Tesla cars written off with very little damage, because the body shops can’t get parts in a reasonable amount of time. Sometimes the sheer volume of available cars gives you pause. Now I would never say anything controversial; like Porsche owners are better drivers than BMW owners. Though recently I noticed that Copart has 25 pages of salvage Porsches and 193 pages of BMWs listed. I leave you to draw your own conclusions. It probably doesn’t mean anything…..lol. See you all trackside!

Because not everyone drives like you do. Kurt Bergmanis, Member Ontario Trial Lawyers Association Member PCA UCR

CANAM 914 50TH

A Breath of Fresh Air

“G

ive me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. Emma Lazarus’ sonnet for the Statue of Liberty might serve equally well as a call to 914 ownership, especially the last part, about “yearning to breathe free”. Long regarded by many as the “poor-man’s Porsche”, the 914 is today receiving a new following of admirers seeking what is pure in a sports car – a car that will allow them to breathe free of modern “conveniences” that serve to diminish the direct relationship with the road. Ask any 914 owner what makes the 914 so appealing and you’ll likely hear that it is not what the car has, but rather what it lacks that makes it so special. Free of power steering, free of power brakes, free of an intelligent automatic transmission. No electric windows, no a/c (barring the dealer installed units), and no rear seats. A 914 owner has no desire for such unnecessary accoutrements. A 914 owner seeks to breathe in all that is purely Porsche in the classic tradition – just like “number 1” a 914 features an air-cooled boxer engine, mid-engine design and a no-frills lightweight chassis designed

around the driver to deliver superb handling and the ultimate driving experience. The mid engine formula again appeared with the “giant killer” 550 Spyder and a long list of subsequent Porsche racing cars. It just works. The mettle of 914 owners is frequently tested and must be strong to endure the criticisms they so often hear– not enough power, not made in Stuttgart, “NOT A REAL PORSCHE!” – a phrase the 914 owner meets with good humour. A 914 embodies all that is Porsche in a very tangible way, transcending any fact or statistic used to refute its place in the Porsche pantheon. The best test of all is the seat of the pants. One drive in a 914, and a person quickly appreciates what makes this car so addictive and so purely Porsche. A qualitative measure that must be experienced. Drive one and you’ll understand.

as the mist rises from the water. A sublime experience to be sure. Every aspect of the road surface deftly communicated through the batwing steering wheel emblazoned with the stallion from Stuttgart. How thankful we are that our favourite car wears the Porsche name, including 914 owners under the umbrella of the largest single marque club in the world – the PCA. With the support of PCA UCR, 914 owners were able to celebrate their cars on August 4th at a most appropriate venue – on the world-class CTMP Grand Prix Circuit during the PCA UCR CanAm Challenge. Eighteen cars made the journey to CTMP to form a display at the Winners’ Podium, and 17 took to the track for parade laps led by Texan Mark Gohlke in his beautifully prepared 914 race car. For the 914 enthusiast, it is worth noting that Mark’s car was formerly raced by Beach Boys Racing and also Sheridan Motorsports. Following behind Mark was PCA UCR newcomer Tim van Rooij and his father Godfried in Tim’s yellow 914, which flew yellow caution flags and bore door signs replicating those that appeared on the first F1 safety car – a Porsche 914 used at the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix on the same track some 46 years ago. In the parade that followed were a wide assortment of 914s, from the highly original 1972 Willow Green 1.7 of Tim McCaig, to the race prepared 3.6 monster of Paul Roberts, to the highly modified custom of Patrick Bates, sporting a 1.9 VW turbo diesel. At the back of the pack was the steel flared GT inspired car of Peter DeJonge of Restoration Design, a company in Guelph Ontario renowned for helping to keep these cars alive with their excellent replacement panels. But whatever form their 914 took, what each owner found at the track this day was a level of acceptance and comradery that is not always present in car culture when egos are

On August 4th, a contingent of 914 enthusiasts converged on CTMP to pay homage to their favourite car of the Porsche marque – the much maligned 914, to mark 50 years of its production. Just how much does this car mean to people? – ask Tony Alber who was sitting in the waiting room of a US passport office the Friday before the big event nervously awaiting clearance to obtain his expedited papers so he could then hop in his truck and tow his 1974 CanAm Creamsicle over 750 km all the way from Hilltown, Pennsylvania. Or ask John Thurwachter, (Zone 2 Riesentöter Region, Pennsylvania) who drove his 914 from Southeast Michigan. And did he take the 401 corridor? Of course not! As a driving enthusiast, he travelled up the east coast of Lake Huron and then went cross-country over highway #9 to savour the driving experience. And 500 km later, when he finally arrived at his destination, he was actually saddened that it was over and headed back out to Tony Alber (Pennsylvania) accepts his recognition certificate from John Tipper. explore local roads. Then there’s Gord Luy, founding president of Red River Region PCA who flew in from Manitoba just to be with other “teeners”. Like many other Porsche enthusiasts, 914 owners, myself included, live and breathe their cars. As a past owner of a 944 and present owner of a 1978 911 and a 1995 993, I can say without any reservation whatsoever that the 914 is the one closest to my heart because it connects me to the act of driving like no other car I’ve ever experienced. Long time PCA UCR member Alex Pankiw of Harmony Road feels the same way. With a wide variety of Porsche cars at his disposal, his vehicle of choice is a 1974 914 1.8 litre. Talk to Alex and he’ll wax poetic about driving his 914, targa roof stowed neatly in the trunk, winding his way through Algonquin Park early in the morning

The CanAm 914 50th was a resounding success. For some attendees it was a first time visiting CTMP and a first time UCR event. How wonderful it is to initiate new members in this fashion, highlighting the racing pedigree of our favourite marque! SIG 914 members wish to thank all the racers and volunteers that made our day at the track possible. Special thanks to Past President Kathleen Wong for her tireless support and enthusiasm to help me, a newbie, coordinate this special day. Thanks also to Terry Cassan, Stefan Walther, Renate Weidner, Mike Bryan, Jackie Metcalfe, Graham Jardine and Adrian Chan. As I write, I notice my wrist bands still in place from our day at the track. John Thurwachter (Michigan) receives his recognition certificate from John Tipper. Reminders of a dream you don’t want to be over. But the dream isn’t over. The PCA UCR SIG 914 lurking. As David Tipton declared “914 owners are real.” group has only just begun and we will continue to breathe All pretensions are put aside for the 914 owner - it’s all free, enjoying our cars and sharing our passion for Porsche about the joy of driving and appreciating these wonderful and our favourite of all – the 914. Happy 50th! cars. The fellowship of 914 owners continued from CTMP Please check this link for our next event: with a driving tour of local roads, including a stop at https://pcaucr.org/special-interest-groups/914-sig/ Bewdley on Rice Lake for refreshments and concluding with a shop open house and barbecue social hosted by new member and long time 914 enthusiast Mark Henry and his family. On the menu was cooler corn, salads, sausage and hamburgers with all the fixings. A very special thank you goes out to Kim and Elizabeth Henry for the feast! Long time 914 historian and former UCR President Dave Pateman judged a mini-concours, providing a friendly and instructive evaluation of each car. As part of the CanAm event, how appropriate it was to see the two namesake 1974 914 LE Can Am cars, the Bumblebee of UCR members David and Carrie Tipton and the Creamsicle of American Tony Alber receive top honours for “best restored” and “best survivor” respectively. Honours for “best modified” went to Terry Smyth for his nicely detailed tribute to Larousse’s 1970 Marathon de la Route winning 914-6 GT, driven to the event by noted 914 specialist Mike Galloway of Mike’s 914s.

PERIPHERAL VISION By John Adam, Past President and UCR Historian

I

I know that you will hear it from others but . . . elections are coming up in November and we will be determining who manages our club and its activities next year. The new board, in turn, should appoint all the 2020 event chairs before it begins making plans later in the year, our forty-fourth. Think about doing your part to help in your own way. We have been members since 1983 and the return we have received for our investment in the club has been very rewarding. The bottom line is that you are getting out of it in proportion to what you put in. It may be time for you to consider getting involved in any number of areas that 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990

you have some modest skill at. It’s not just about P-cars. It’s about people. You and me. Any member of the board or event chair will be happy to talk to you about the opportunity for you to get involved in the way that you find most enjoyable. Be part of the team and you will be working with some great people, adding your own ideas to make our club even better and having a lot of fun at the same time. Our monthly Socials have been the occasion for seeing many past UCR club presidents. I am pleasantly surprised when they show up and say hello. These are the club leaders that have helped UCR to become the largest in PCA and excel in so many ways. They still care and we thank them.
