EDITOR’S

LETTER While I grow within this industry, I am constantly being reminded that everything I create represents more than my own ideas and experiences. I am simply pieces of all things I’ve ever touched, all people I’ve ever met, and every sound I’ve ever heard. It is this constant reminder that drives my love for art, fashion, and creativity and that has also shown me the importance of representation, mentorship, and icons. As the first African American Editor in Chief of Blush Magazine, it was important for me to continue the immortalization of ideologies that molded my love for creativity in all of its forms. Everyone and everything that has ever influenced me, lives on through me and my work and this cycle of influence is infinite. Virgil Abloh once said that “The amount of influence that people have...could all of a sudden actually change the world for a better place.” Without influence, new ideas and systems can never be born and it is extremely important that we take time to appreciate all influence that has made us who we are. We must appreciate to innovate. Without recognizing where we came from and who inspired us into the places in which we currently reside, there is no chance for true creative change. You’re more than yourself and everything you create should represent these intricate pieces of your creative DNA. My inspiration for the Icon issue was this idea of appreciation but also diversity and representation. Being an icon isn’t subjective to one type of person or system but more so, a way of life. It’s about living and breathing in your truth and honing those unique pieces of personality into art that lives beyond the bounds of any medium. My biggest inspirations in this industry have been Lindsey People’s Wagner and the late Virgil Abloh because of their consistent fight against artistic exclusion. Being categorized as an icon depends not only on what you create, but what that creation represents and who can see themselves within its confines. I hope that as you read this issue, if you take away nothing else, you learn that there are no spaces that don’t need infiltrating. Take up as much space as you can, authentically. You deserve to be there. Welcome to the Icon issue. Enjoy.

A staple accessory to any wardrobe, how has eyewear stood the test of time?

BY AUDREY TOBIN

Eyewear, the accessory that balances both style and practicality, is not exclusively for those with an eye for fashion, but rather for all. The secret to their longevity? Their adaptability. Today, sunglasses still perform their primary function of protection but are doing so with bold frames and riveting designs. All over the world, people continue to wear eyewear for a myriad of reasons, with its status as a prominent accessory in our wardrobe credited to the versatility of the frames. This versatility has gifted eyewear immortality, keeping the product alive and effectively reflecting the zeitgeist. Eyewear is no new invention. Dating back to 12th century China, the first pairs of eyewear were made of gemstones (like smoky quartz), with the primary function to protect the eyes—a function that still remains today. Whether you’re trying to hide your emotions, protect your eyes from the sun, or make a fashion statement, sunglasses can do it all. Despite sunglasses’ necessity, many still choose to put on a pair of funky shades as a finishing touch to a killer outfit. With this usage, sunglasses’ utility takes a backseat, as eyewear finds its position as one of our more beloved fashion accessories.

Eyewear had its big break in mainstream fashion thanks to celebrities who catapulted the accessory into relevance. In the early 1920s, an era of glamor and status, Hollywood’s finest were seen wearing small, round frames with dark lenses. Then came commercialization. The first mass production of sunglasses took place in 1929, allowing eyewear to become easily accessible and accepted. The 1950s brought couture designers into the eyewear scene as they produced new mod-style glasses for their exclusive clientele, garnering a whole new target audience for the eyewear industry. This ease of accessibility transformed the market, with different demographics using the product for different uses. Going to the beach became synonymous with the use of sunglasses as beachgoers now could stay protected from the sun in style. Sunglasses also allowed people to hide emotions behind their frames, with many wearing them to funerals. Even high-profile celebrities started to shield their identity from the press, wearing their eyewear as a disguise.

What do they say again, the eyes are the window to the soul? A quick glance into one’s eyes is a dead giveaway of their emotions. Our eyes can say what we might not be able to. Eyewear can even be a way of shielding an uncontrollable demonstration of vulnerability. Yet, the idea of creating bold fashion statements through eyewear contradicts this action of shielding yourself. When one makes a “fashion statement,” essentially an emotion, aesthetic, or message is being expressed. Look at Balenciaga’s Fall 2022 runway. Every model in the show sported a pair of futuristic sunglasses resembling a combination of snow goggles and virtual reality headsets. These glasses portrayed Balenciaga’s Creative Director, Demna Gvasalia’s, views on climate change, presenting a future with snow storms (visible through virtual reality) which reflects common anxieties about our current world and its inevitable consequences.

Eyewear is not only for high fashion, commercial fashion produces novelty sunglasses as well. Whether it’s heart-shaped glasses, classic American aviators, rainbow lenses, or a chic cat-eye, these glasses also produce fashion statements. What will eyewear trends look like in 2022? Flashbacks from the past with 60s influence (think big Sharon Tate-style glasses) will make an appearance as the world foresees a Gen-Z youthquake. Sporty silhouettes will also hit the market in a trickle-down manner thanks to Gvasalia’s designs. As companies focus more on sustainability and season-less wear, monochromatic and elevated-basic styles will inspire new reductive design approaches. Sunglasses aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and with summer right around the corner, it’s time once again to dust off everyone’s favorite timeless accessory.

Today, the subversive style is a niche response to the postpandemic era. Subversive fashion made its way from the elite fashion communities to the workings of creators on social media. It has become a form of expression, stemming from those who were confined during the lockdown and who sought freedom through style. The shift from uniformed fashion to innovation is consistent with how people constantly reevaluated their sense of self during the pandemic. Our society and its cultural expectations no longer serve as a governing factor in our lives, as even the clothes we choose to wear hold power. Now more than ever, people want to reimagine, rebrand, and control parts of their identity, and the subversive style grants them the ability to feel this way. This style of fashion facilitates the creation of a safe space allowing self-expression with control at the hands of the creator. The subversive aesthetic is accessible to anyone, providing creatives the opportunity to invent bold fashion statements.

HOW MUCH POWER DOES THE RIGHT PAIR OF SHOES REALLY HAVE? BY MORGAN COHEN We can all reminisce on a time (or times) well spent in the shoe department of our favorite store. Pacing back and forth through the aisles, you take in the intoxicating aroma of fresh leather, and gaze in awe at the gleaming shoes politely perched on their displays. Whether it’s a coveted pair of sneakers you chase, the perfect pair of stilettos you desire, or classic ballet flats you crave, we all know the feeling of fawning over that one pair of shoes all too well. It’s all-encompassing, and who could forget the anticipation that builds right before you swipe your credit card and—chaching—make the purchase. Somehow the intensity of the shoe department can cause those of us with even the most common sense to make wildly impulsive and impractical decisions, turning the sanest of us, insane. Feeling hypnotized by the never-ending selection, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that when it comes to shoe stores, there’s a soft, spellbinding magic in the air. Now, picture this: you sit down with a brand new, untouched box of shoes. As you lift the box’s lid, like opening a vault, you feel the pressure of the concealed air being, at last, released. You slowly remove the delicate tissue paper to reveal the treasure sought below the surface. After taking a moment to admire them in all of their untouched, unworn glory, you eagerly slip the first shoe on taking note of the feel, the look. Then slipping the second shoe on, you stand up, with a bright smile and a newly found confidence about you.

As you walk, you feel a giddy sensation overcome you. You check your reflection in the mirror, paying attention first to the shoe itself, and then to the way it hugs your foot. Your eye then begins to move up as you observe the way your legs look in the shoe, then how your outfit looks in the shoe, until finally, you reach eye level, looking at yourself in the mirror. Grinning, you pace up the aisle in your best faux-model walk, spin once or twice, and then take a seat, appreciating the shoes once more before taking them off, sure of your decision, and making your way to the cashier. Suddenly infinite doors open, presenting endless possibilities— places to be visited, occasions to be celebrated, parts of yourself to be uncovered—all thanks to this new pair of shoes. It leaves one wondering: How much power do shoes, or the right pair of shoes, really have? After all, shoes can clearly influence our feelings and mood, which ultimately has the ability to influence our behavior, the way we present ourselves to the world, and our energy towards life. By switching up a pair of white Reeboks for a lace-up heel, your ensemble of jeans and a camisole could take on a whole new persona, leading you to adopt an entirely different attitude. Exchanging your staple Chelsea boots for a pair of platform Dr. Martens, switches not only the style of your outfit but the style in which you carry yourself throughout the day.

Swapping out ballet flats for Mary Janes brings about a new energy, a new feeling, or a new view towards your daily tasks.

prompts them to share that idea that they were on the fence about, now secure in a newfound confidence.

“Shoes are a direct correlation to oneself,” says Ellen Lynch, founder of the Footwear and Accessories Department and a professor at The Fashion Institute of Technology. “Someone who’s goth would never wear pink ballet flats but would be seen with black platform boots adorned with studs and chains.”

Though one can feel a specific boldness through wearing, let's say, the Jimmy Choo slingback heel, what is so breathtakingly unique about shoes is the variety of styles that have the ability to speak to a person, introduce them to another side of themselves, and simultaneously, a new feeling or outlook.

Lynch also speaks of shoes’ unique power when it comes to selfexpression. With each stage of our lives, each chapter we write for ourselves, we present ourselves to the world in various ways, a large part being the way we dress—especially when it comes to our choice of footwear.

“With the right pair of flats, you can dance the night away, and, of course, with your favorite sneaker, you’ll be the dunk-master at the next pick-up basketball game,” confirms Lynch.

Shoes have the ability to overcome us with such powerful feelings that they can influence the way we carry ourselves. “When you wear a beautiful pair of stiletto shoes you’re transformed into an elegant creature, head held high and ready to tackle the world,” says Lynch. The right pair of stilettos, the pair that speaks to the wearer most, can turn an average, everyday walk into an effortless glide, bringing about a rush of confidence and a feeling of being uplifted. It affects one’s confidence as they find themselves walking into a meeting unafraid to be a bold presence in the room, or maybe it

22

That stiletto could hold the power to push you into talking to someone that you were eyeing at the club. That loafer could be the shoe that ignites your confidence when taking your first step into a job interview. That compliment on a new pair of sneakers could be the introduction of two best friends. The pair of shoes one decides to wear has the strength to be the connection between the present and future—what someone has, and what they’re working to acquire. So, how much power does the right pair of shoes have? It’s not the pair of shoes themselves that are powerful, but rather their ability to allow someone to step into their own power. At the end of the day, every person builds their life, career, and future, from the bottom up, and that begins with their footwear.

Some might even say he was ahead of his time, by revolutionizing the idea of celebrities as models. His muses included the familiar names of David Bowie, Diana Ross, and Madonna. He would have them wear his most striking designs, leaving onlookers craving more of his dazzling work. It’s easy to wonder if his work would have become as memorialized if it weren’t for these A-listers and the eyes that were looking to them. So, do designers need celebrities to take their work to the next level? Without them would they truly be considered icons?

without the hard and defined mold that had long been imposed. Combining two things that had never been able to successfully co-exist, Abloh opened up an entirely new playing field for others to share their talent with the world as well. Similarly, Andre Leon Talley, the famous fashion journalist for Vogue, paved his way in the fashion industry to become an inspiration for many. Coming from a harsh plight that he never let detain him from his visions, he saw the world in a glamorous light. He wrote for many publications, and with his gripping words, he captivated the minds of those around him.

For Mugler, his work spoke for itself and continues to exert its influence in the way many approach fashion and design. He might have dressed these celebrities with his killer looks, but if his work wasn’t fabulous to begin with, it wouldn’t have made headlines. Mugler’s work reflected his extraordinary presence, from his designs to his runway shows, every aspect was infused with his audacious personality and vision.

His grand presence was seen through his larger-than-life apparel choices, often opting for large capes or robes. Still, his most impressive feat was pushing for further diversity and inclusion of Black designers and models within the heavily exclusive industry. His powerful words and existence led him to be revered by the totality of society.

Most of these style mavericks understood that fashion is an extension of their personality. These designers were enigmatic creators that were unafraid to go against the directive and push what was considered customary in fashion.

These designers left an influential mark on the world, but one may wonder why society has held them in such high esteem even long after their passing? Could it be because their work was truly remarkable or because the icons themselves were epochal and weren’t afraid to take risks that no one else would?

The late Virgil Abloh, beloved creator of the fashion brand OffWhite and lead designer for Louis Vuitton, created a legacy that will forever be immortalized.

The answer is simple. These designers did what many individuals weren’t brave enough to do and succeeded. Some pushed boundaries and gifted the world with entirely new In his creative decision to combine streetwear and luxury, looks, while others pushed designs out of the box. Mirage of “Medium” The

You don’t have to attend the circus to see the world’s biggest optical illusion—it’s right in front of your eyes: the fashion industry’s sizing crisis. Welcome to the mirage of “medium.”

By Viviana Harris

CATEGORY

Surprise, surprise, the fashion industry has a sizing problem, but I didn’t have to tell you that because you already knew— you’re probably a victim of it. I guarantee it wouldn’t take you long to remember a time when you were caught up in the blur that is the mirage between women’s clothing sizes. We’ve all been there, staring at the mirror in the sterile, fluorescent-lit dressing room, puzzled, as you question why this morning you were a size 4 in pants from Aritzia, but this afternoon you’re a size 8 in a pair from COS? It’s one thing to be different sizes in pants from different brands, but to be different sizes in pants from the same brand is a whole different story. It’s even worse when you’re different sizes in different colors of the same exact style of pants (yes, it’s happened to me before). A mouthful, I know. But it’s the reality of shopping for clothes in this day and age and, honestly, a byproduct of a moneyhungry industry. Today, shopping for a new wardrobe is like playing a game of Tetris or a round of Russian roulette. And if you dare to shop online—kudos to you—you’ll need some luck, particularly when hypothesizing whether that dress you’re buying for your cousin’s wedding would fit better in a size 6 or 8. Even the website is guessing along with you as it suggests a size “based on your previous buys.”

Fast-forward to today, and you’ll see that the fashion sizing crisis has only worsened. The industry continues to give authority to these arbitrary numbers, allowing them to govern the livelihood of the modern woman. Ah, and then there’s vanity sizing (when brands intentionally label a size smaller than it actually is), misleading people to believe that they’re smaller than they actually are. Now it makes sense why you’re two different sizes at two different stores, right? But don’t worry you’re not alone, one size fits none. Trust me, it’s not you; clothing sizes are broken. Unfortunately, we’ve been taught to equate our self-worth to a measly number on a tag, distorting our already warped sense of self and further shrinking our self-worth. Honestly, what the hell does being a size “M” even mean? Neither small nor large, just somewhere in between. With no legal regulation, sizing is more like a recommendation than an absolute. Brands have essentially created their own sizes, loosely basing them on industry standards. There’s no rulebook etched into stone that constitutes what defines a size or what size is ideal. Who are we kidding? Size universality only exists in our wildest dreams. How can we strive to create standardized sizing when there’s no such thing as a standard body?

But it hasn’t always been like this. Back in the day thanks to bespoke tailoring and homemade-to-fit garments, no one had It’s simple we can’t—unless you’re Brandy Melville, shattering to worry about buying the right “size.” How could they? Sizes, the confidence of young girls as they mass produce and market clothing as “one size fits all.” Sorry, my bad, now the tags read as we know them today, weren’t even invented yet. “one size,” as if the removal of two measly words makes it any With the spread of capitalism, the mentality has shifted to better. more is more, and so, the art of tailoring was swallowed up by I’m sure I’m not the only one with a “diverse” wardrobe. From the development of new machinery. XS to XL, size 4 to 12, or 28W to 32W—this is my mirage. Welcome to the era of mass-production. You also must consider the difference between one’s true size and the desired fit they seek. One minute you might want to look like you’re drowning in your dad’s jeans from the 90s, and the next you could want a pair that’s skin-tight to define your best ass(ets).

Not to be a skeptic, but I wonder how authentic this sudden rise in diversity truly is? Could it just be an ingenuine reaction from brands who fear being “canceled” by the ruthless likes of Gen Z and Millenials?

Navigating between sizes 8 and 12 is incredibly frustrating, but And would it really be a fashion crisis without the mention shopping for plus sizes proves even more difficult. of sustainability? I know what you’re thinking, but how does erratic sizing contribute to fashion waste? The answers right in Former Aritzia employee, Kennedy Stukes, 22, believes that the fashion industry designs clothing for petite sizes, with a front of you: returns. lack of care and consideration given to how this clothing will Apparently we’re the “laziest” generation to exist, with fit on bigger women, despite 67 percent of women being a size everything we could ever want at our fingertips just a click 16 or above according to Refinery29. away, so of course, we’re lazy when it comes to shopping. “Brands feel obliged to include these plus sizes in their product So, keep this in mind the next time you do an online haul; the selection, increasing the fabric allocation to do so without probability that the clothes you intend to return will end up adjusting the fit, meaning in most cases, it doesn’t flatter and accentuate the features of plus-size women,” expresses Stukes. going to a landfill is very high. Fast fashion continues to be the biggest culprit of this, as its sizes are the least consistent. Whereas, slow-fashion brands, like custom occasion wear brand Fame and Partners, are better at eradicating this room for error as their creative process is more personal, with made-to-order production methods and additional alterations services.

I think it’s safe to say the industry is still in a gray area. Some brands are truly invested in size inclusivity being the core of their very existence, like Parade, with colorful campaigns that feature models of all shapes and sizes (XXS-3XL). Whilst others (think the infamous lingerie label, Victoria’s Secret), still feel inauthentic in their approach.

Elan Mottley, 54, the Managing Director of 4AM Restaurant Group, identified the struggle of ordering online from Zara. She laughs, “In one sitting I bought a size ‘S’ in one linen dress, a size ‘M’ in another, a size ‘L’ in a dress shirt, and a size ‘XL’ in silk pants.”

This inclusion is great; however, we now run the risk of tokenism, with plus-size models being thrown into runway shows, walking among the industry’s beloved archetype of the heroine-chic supermodel. Tokenism versus representation— it’s a hard gamble, but one we’re willing to take if it means the industry is changing.

And the craziest thing is, she’s not alone. This is just another example of the notorious mirage of sizes that we know all too So, what’s next? How can we bridge the gap in these size discrepancies? well. We’ve all seen videos blasting brands on social media with sizing hauls pointing out inclusivity. Remi Bader, a content creator and curve model, has amassed a following of 2.1 million on TikTok from doing just that with her series titled “Realistic Hauls.” She’s unafraid to call out brands for their inconsistent sizing in a hilariously real, and honestly, extremely frustrating way as she cracks jokes about the supposed “inclusive” sizing, mocks the ridiculousness of some of fashion’s branding, and flaunts garments, both bad and good, unapologetically.

The answer’s simple: technology.

Bader purchases (or is gifted) a selection of items ranging from size L-XXL from a brand and records herself doing a try-on and review. Some garments fit perfectly, like pieces from the new Skims swimsuit collection, whilst others serve no justice to her curvy figure. She’s often seen reviewing brands such as H&M, Zara, Frankies Bikinis, and Skims.

Some advice? Stop shopping for sizes and start shopping for fit.

Harnessing technological advances in areas like artificial intelligence could help improve our shopping experience and minimize inaccuracies. If improvements are made with particular attention given to shopping online, we could witness fewer clothing returns, minimizing not only fashion’s impact on the environment but allowing greater ease when shopping for your right size.

We need to reteach ourselves. We must detach ourselves from the size on the tag, or the number on the waistband, and as cheesy as it sounds, just choose the size that makes you feel the best. If it’s bigger or smaller than what you regularly wear, so After years of existing as an exclusive industry, fashion is be it. Don’t be fooled by the mirage of medium. now being pushed out of its comfort zone, forced to open its doors to the new craze: diversity. Wearing matching outfits is nothing new, but what exactly is the outcome of choosing to match with your significant other (or not)?

Picture this: You’re walking through Soho on a remarkably sunny Sunday afternoon on a mission to buy your new spring wardrobe. You look to your right and are met with the sight of an attractive couple strolling down the street, hand in hand, wearing matching head-to-toe outfits. What’s your first reaction? Is it cute or cringe? The appearance we exude on the outside is a reflection of the person we are on the inside, with this outward appearance arising from a summation of decisions: how we choose to do our hair, our makeup, and, most importantly, what we decide to wear. The relationships that we have with one another also determine who we are as people. So, are the two interconnected? Does how we dress affect the relationships we have?

The concept of dressing alike is one we’re all familiar with. Whether you’ve dressed in matching outfits for your annual family photos (against your will, of course), intentionally twinned with your best friend in middle school, or are even guilty of participating in a little color coordination with your roommate, no one can deny that coordinating outfits isn’t a tad bit fun. But what about when it comes to matching with your significant other? As The Devil Wears Prada taught us, no one is beyond the clothes that they wear. Even those who proclaim that they don’t care about fashion, still intentionally pick the clothes that they buy for one reason or another, and when we understand these reasons, we reveal a lot about a person’s personality.

So, is it telling when couples choose to match or not? When a couple is matching or coordinating, they are perceived as a unit—a cohesive entity. Undeniably, when two people see themselves as a part of a cohort, even subconsciously, it’s bound to help that relationship flourish. Or is it? Being on the same page with one another is one of the most important parts of a relationship, and yeah, it’s kind of cute too. “It’s an activity that they can do together as a couple, kind of like a form of PDA,” says Fashion Institute of Technology student, Alisha Singh, 19. But what happens when your boyfriend says he hates the color green? Or when your girlfriend says that she would rather sell her Margielas than be seen in sneakers? Does this mean the relationship is destined for failure? Do we have to have the same taste as our partner for it to work? It may seem as though the answer is cut and dry: if our clothing says that much about us as people, then you and your partner should have relatively similar tastes if the relationship is going to work out. However, just like everything else about a relationship these days, it’s not that simple. And what about the idea of “opposites attract?” Perhaps it’s better to have an opposing style to your partner in a relationship to keep things fresh and interesting? Sometimes when your partner is too much like you, things can get boring, so maybe finding someone with different tastes than ours will help us grow as individuals. Even when you’re in a relationship, cultivating your own identity is vital and even empowering. Seeing yourself as more than just a piece of your partner is necessary if you want to have a healthy relationship in the long term. Our early adult years are some of the most important years of our lives in terms of building our own personas. And trust me, just because your boyfriend is wearing head-to-toe Supreme doesn’t mean you should be too. Seeing yourself in a light that is all your own and separate from your partners helps you from falling into negative patterns of dependency and attachment. If you perceive yourself and your significant other as one and the same, it can be easy to lose your sense of self. So, back to the original question, is matching with your partner cute or cringe? Trying to better your relationship and understanding of each other? Cute. Wanting to please them by forcing their personal style onto yourself ? Cringe.

WORK By Alaye Alleyne It’s finally time to go back to the office, and workwear, as we know it, will never be the same. New office styles are breaking boundaries and creating power through new expressions.

Typically, pencil skirts, tunics, suits, ties, and of course we mustn’t forget those infamous white collared dress shirts, have long been equated with importance, respect, and prestige. But this may no longer be the case.

As we shift into the post-pandemic era, the workforce, and subsequently workwear, are undergoing some major changes. While some people are eager to get back to the office, others are facing anxiety and a fear of their impending return. As we begin to leave the comfort of our homes to return to the working world, many are wondering, what will we wear now?

As the workforce returns, the likes of Gen-Z are prompting a much more casual attitude. A look at creators, @maddison_lynn and @quepasyaya on TikTok, shows that the working world’s younger demographic is hopping on the new workwear trend. “Workwear is being redefined. I think it’s best to find a middle ground,” says freelance journalist and a contributor to The Cut, Constance White. “Observing what your bosses or directors above you are wearing is significant. You can be an influencer in your office and still be within the style boundaries of your company.”

As office culture begins to change, workwear is also starting to mirror this shift. Many are in favor of returning to work in the comfortable attire that they had dawned during their remote time, regardless of it being considered unacceptable pre-pandemic. Workwear, which once conveyed a unique je ne sais quoi and aired professionalism, is now Comfort plays a huge factor in building our post-pandemic work-drobe, with the emergence of more “formal loungewear.” From untucked shirts taking on a much more relaxed approach. to slouchy, elevated pajama-like sets, the laid-back look has found its way into this season’s latest collections Graphic Designer Colette Antonaccio CATEGORY FASHION

You could be jeopardizing your whole skincare routine by not doing one step right. For the best skin, check out our expert makeup removal tips. Right now your skincare routine might be as basic as it gets—just some makeup wipes and straight to bed. Maybe some moisturizer on those nights when you really need it, yet this could be the very reason you aren’t getting the results you want with your skin. Gone are the days of heavy complexion products and cakey makeup, and hello to dewy, glowing skin. From runway shows to viral Tik Tok videos, we’re seeing modern-day makeup trends turn away from an airbrushed, flawless look and embrace a more natural effect. “Glass Skin,” a trend taking over beauty culture, refers to skin that looks flawless, poreless, and illuminated—so illuminated that it almost looks reflective.

58

The term, originating in the K-beauty circuit, is often achieved through 10 to 13-step skincare routines. And influencers like Renee Chow and Sofia Grahn are embracing the glow by straying away from appearing perfect and loving their skin the way it is, naturally. Although it may be seen as excessive and unnecessary to some people, when you break down these elaborate routines you find just three key steps: cleanse, treat, and moisturize. The most important of these steps? Thoroughly removing your makeup and cleansing your skin to leave your face with a clean canvas for your palette. Every painting begins with a clean, smooth canvas, and your skin is no exception. In order to get the most out of your products, you need to have a solid foundation. This starts with making sure that last night’s makeup came off. Not taking your makeup off before bed can do more than just dirty your pillows, it can leave your complexion looking dull in the morning. Overnight, the makeup that helped you conceal those fine lines and blemishes can settle into your skin, making your complexion look dull and dry. It might even leave you appearing older! Makeup left on during the night can also cause breakouts.

If you’re internally freaking out because this is the first time you’re hearing this, don’t worry. The solution to your problems is the double cleanse. The double cleanse is a relatively new idea in the skincare world. Originating in Japan and Korea, the purpose of the double cleanse is to remove dirt, cosmetics, and most importantly, sebum, which is a cause of acne. It can also help your other skincare products penetrate better. Because your pores are clean, they become better prepared to draw in your serums and moisturizers. When double cleansing you first want to use a cleansing oil or oil-based balm. Don’t forget to always be gentle. While you may need to put in a little extra effort in some places, don’t scrub your skin too hard, especially around your eyes. After going in with your oil-based cleanser, you can then use a water-based one. These often come in either a cream or gel consistency. When removing your makeup, take your time! It’s better to leave the heavy lifting to your makeup removal product. Aside from that, skincare is an act of self-care, so enjoy the process. The heavy lifting is all done, you now have your clean canvas, ready for all your skincare goodies. How you go about the rest of your routine is up to you and your skin’s individual needs. Your routine could be as simple as moisturizing or might include additionals, such as toners, treatments, and serums. If you’re experiencing dry skin, create a routine centered around hydration and moisture. Focus on ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and find a rich moisturizer to bring back your glow. If your skincare concerns revolve more around treating breakouts, focus on using products with ingredients like salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, and retinol. Be gentle with these as excess usage can result in dryness or more breakouts. There’s no one-size-fits-all skincare routine, as someone’s routine can target several different concerns and include anywhere from 3 to 13 steps. Getting your skincare routine right and mastering When you add makeup on top of those oils and leave it on the basics can go a long way towards clearing up your for prolonged periods of time, it can cause your pores to complexion and giving you that ever-popular “Glass clog, leading to breakouts. Sound surrounds us. Chords rise and fall, and high notes burst bright and angelic. We’re designed to receive, create, and heal with sound. When you were in the womb, sound was the first sensation you received. The first sound we all respond to is the rhythm of our own mother’s heartbeat. We’re born into a rhythm, something that connects us all. What if you were told that sound has the potential to heal? All you need to do is listen. Vibrational Sound Healing is the use of powerful musical instruments and sound frequencies to send soothing sounds and calming vibrations toward the body. As neuroscience and modern-day spirituality evolve, it’s slowly proving what most of us know by instinct: sound holds power over the brain. We’ve entered a new era of aural experiences. Listening is a mysterious, profound art that’s unique to each of us and constantly changing. Vibrational sound therapy can retune your body, mind, and spirit, encouraging relaxation, healing, and wellness. Musicians Jhene Aiko and SZA are only a few who are taking part in this new wave of wellness. They swear by sound bowls as a secret weapon for healing. But what exactly are sound bowls, and why are R&B’s most prominent stars suddenly using them in the studio? An aural-wellness revolution is blossoming, and it’s making its way right into your own earbuds.

Sound Healing has been used in various cultures for thousands of years as a remedy for various spiritual, physical, or mental ailments. Whether it’s Himalayan Singing Bowls, Japanese Rin Gongs, Tibetan Tingshas, mantras as with the Hindus, or Pythagoras’ use of interval and frequency, these healing modalities have been tested and trusted for centuries.

“This all started for me as an experiment, as a way of answering my new calling while searching for a way to heal myself,” she explains. “I’m learning as I go along, but very grateful I’ve been able to practice and share what I’ve learned and what has worked for me with my clients.”

Pledging honor to our potential starts with gratitude, mindfulness, and connection. How can manifestation bridge the gap between our present self and who we want to become? You’ve heard the phrase, “You are your own worst enemy.” If your personal growth seems to be slow or uneventful, it may be because you haven’t fully embraced the potential of your mind now, but you have all the tools you need! How can we embrace the totality of who we are presently to unlock the future of everything that we desire? Feeling like we may lack skills, traits, or resources can obstruct our most passionate attempts at going after what we really want in life. Thoughts that may run through our minds, and have the ability to spread like wildfire, could include, “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t have the resources I need,” or, “I’m not ready yet.” Negative self-talk can have some pretty damaging impacts. Such talk has been found to feed anxiety and depression, which can cause an increase in stress levels while simultaneously lowering levels of self-esteem. This can lead to decreased motivation as well as greater feelings of helplessness. But what if we shifted the narrative? What if we decided to move through our feelings of love, gratitude, and abundance instead of feelings of deficiency or inadequacy? The insufficiency mindset change due to the fear that won’t adapt or that “not enough.” Consequently, it holds us back rather than encouraging our growth. This is why it’s essential to move away from feelings of lack when attempting to connect with our highest potential. A mindset of abundance consists of seeing the limitless potential in yourself and in life; it’s the paradigm that there are plenty of opportunities out there for everybody. It starts with a deep belief that you’re enough, that you have enough, and that you’re deserving of the things you have and will have in your life.

So, how can we begin to cultivate this mindset of “enoughess”? According to Harvard Health, expressing gratitude for who we are and what we have can build feelings of optimism and confidence. Gratitude disconnects us from toxic, negative emotions and the ruminating that often accompanies them. Studies have shown that keeping a gratitude journal “shifts our attention” so that our focus is on positive emotions. Simply writing down what you’re thankful for at the end of the day can move mountains when it comes to manifesting your dream life. When we feel positivity, we exude positivity, and therefore we attract positivity. It’s through these aligned beliefs that we can begin to make aligned actions. When we hold the belief that we have the power, strength, and ability to achieve our goals, we’ll feel confident enough to take purposeful action to manifest those goals into reality. Remember: belief = power. Manifesting a life and a self that you’re proud of requires mindfulness and gratitude for the present moment. Mindfulness is simply slowing down enough to notice all of the little things inside and around you without judgment. It’s saying, “I’m grateful for everything in my present, because these are the necessary moments that fundamentally shape my future. These are the building blocks, and I am grateful.” It’s through expressing gratitude now that we can open our hearts for our future. Connecting with your inner icon (your highest self ) is a beautiful relationship that enables parallelism to fuel your growth. Visualize your future self; see them, feel them, be them. When our current vision exists on the same plane as our highest self’s vision, there’s nothing that can stop us. Get out of your own way and believe in your potential—it’s you versus you. See it, believe it, and be grateful for it—for everything on this beautiful road leads towards your inner icon.

During Collina Strada’s Fall 2022 runway show in February, model Indira Scott served her signature cascade of plaits in a towering updo. And similarly, designer Schiaparelli whipped up some showstopping hairdos this season, most notably a cornrow style featuring a mohawk-like arrangement of sharp spikes. The classic updo is entering a new era that is bold and without rules, and the world is welcoming it with open arms. Dua Lipa’s two-toned, spiky top knot at the 2020 Grammy’s took the Internet by storm. Her ultra-modern take on the 90s-inspired updo sparked interest with its effortless style. Hairstylist, Chris Appleton, simplified the look into six easy steps: prep the hair with an anti-humidity treatment, blow-dry upwards into a ponytail, smooth out the hair, create shape with pins, fill in the hairline, and tame any flyaways. The ease of this updo is favored by the likes of Zendaya and Zoe Kravitz but has also been elevated into even more eye-catching styles by celebrities such as Lupita Nyong’o.

Unlike fashion, these experimental beauty moments feel much more attainable for many. If you’re willing to upgrade your hair game, a good place to start is by gathering inspiration. Fortunately with this “new age of updos,” we’re seeing out-of-the-norm hairstyles on more than just the red carpet. Stylists are using social media to break down styles into steps and guide hair enthusiasts through the updos they’ve been dying to try at home. The ever-growing popularity of “hair influencers” has helped garner more interest in the beauty world, giving individuals the confidence to experiment with new styles and products. Hair influencers, like @Poppy_Hairstyles and @ EverydayHairInspiration on Instagram, are flooding their followers with style ideas, hair care tips, and detailed tutorials that are easy to follow. One influencer, in particular, has continued to rise in the ranks of all things hair care: Jen Atkin. With more than four million followers on Instagram, Atkin has become one of the most influential hairstylists in the world. The stylist, who’s responsible for Hailey Bieber’s weddingday chignon and Kendall Jenner’s Met Gala updo, uses social media to share all of her best-kept secrets. You can find almost any major red-carpet moment from the Kardashian-Jenner clan on her account, followed by every product and tool used, as well as a step-by-step tutorial. Atkin also has an Instagram series called “Hair in a Hurry,” where she shows quick and easy styles such as the “Dirty Hair Updo,” the “Sleek Center Bun,” and “The Top Knot.” This series has helped her followers learn how to create their own versions of Atkin’s updos. Now, you don’t have to be her celebrity client to enjoy these red carpetworthy styles.

If you have a busy day ahead of you, or you’re feeling under the weather, you may want to put your hair up to keep it out of the way. If you’re Hailey Baldwin and you have the Met Gala to attend, you may be just as likely to opt for that same ponytail. The best part of an updo is that it’s a jack of all trades. The versatility of this hairstyle is what has ultimately propelled the updo into the high-fashion world of today. With seemingly endless versions of the classic style—and its inclusiveness regarding hair type and length—don’t be surprised if it becomes a part of your own hair repertoire.

Detoxifying Drinks By Sara Hamilton

Tired of the latest diet craze or health hoax? These four drinks will help set you on the right track to a better-balanced you.

In a world of weight loss and diet culture, supposed “quick fixes” and diet fads constantly surround us. Blogs and magazines are always eager to tell us about, “The BEST trick for weight loss!” It comes as no surprise why detoxifying drinks have such a negative connotation surrounding them. While there is no such thing as a cure-all magic formula, detox drinks have recently become a staple in the world of health, with many people raving about their physical and mental benefits. Medical News Today explains that the act of “detoxing” is achieved by adding extra ingredients to water such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, and other natural ingredients. These added elements help to incorporate your daily fruit and veggie quotas into a simple beverage. Detoxing can help with energy improvement, ease digestive functioning, reduce inflammation, improve skin, and even assist in bloating reduction according to the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. And while detox drinks aren’t that “magic fix,” they’re a quick and easy method when aiming to balance your daily nutritional intake, and as an added bonus—they’re super refreshing!

Want to try for yourself? Here are four of the best detox drink recipes you can try at home!

72

Cucumber Lemon Detox Water This is a super simple recipe—great if you’re new to the detox world. Michelle Blackwood, an RN, health coach, and creator of the Healthier Steps blog notes the benefits of this delicious beverage to include bloating reduction, skin rejuvenation and aiding in increasing immunity. This drink is said to even reduce anxiety and depression. Based on proven research conducted by the Mayo Clinic, lemons have been found to produce a natural calming effect when introduced to your system. For this recipe, combine these ingredients in hot or cold water: • 2 lemon slices or 1 Tablespoon • 3 Mint leaves • 5 Cucumber slices

Fruit Infused Detox Water This drink features a refreshing combination of berries for a naturally sweet drink that is low in refined sugars. As suggested by Mayo Clinic, antioxidants from these fruits work to protect the body’s cells from damage, as well as boost immunity from sickness. Use regular or seltzer water and combine: • • • •

¼ cup strawberries Desired amount of blackberries and/or blueberries 2 Orange slices 1 Tablespoon lemon juice (if desired)

Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Drink Ever heard of the apple cider vinegar method? Many people swear that drinking a tablespoon of the liquid a day is amazing for your health. According to Healthline, apple cider vinegar is said to have a multitude of benefits such as improving the symptoms of diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels, aiding in weight loss, and even balancing your body’s PH. But if you’ve ever tried undiluted apple cider vinegar, you know—it’s not for the faint of heart! This detox recipe offers a tastier, more enjoyable option, while still granting you the same benefits. For this recipe, combine: • • • • • •

1 cup water 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon fresh ground ginger ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon raw honey

Heat these ingredients in a saucepan until they reach your desired temperature. Be sure to continue to stir the ingredients while they are heating. Add a lemon slice or a dash of sugar to your drink if desired. Sip, and enjoy!

Coconut Water Detox Did you know that coconut water contains electrolytes? According to the Cleveland Clinic, electrolytes aid in hydration as they contain potassium, sodium, and magnesium. These ingredients can even help to lower blood pressure and even prevent kidney stones. As Healthline finds, green tea contains polyphenols, which are natural compounds that help to reduce inflammation. Studies show that green tea can even help to fight cancer. Combining these ingredients can give you double the benefits! To make this drink, mix: • • • •

4 oz green tea 8 oz coconut water Splash of lemon juice Ice cubes (if desired)

Depending on your food preferences and personal goals, there are many ways to whip up a detoxifying drink and make it your own. These recipes are a great foundation, especially if you’re new to the detoxing world. As Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine,” and sip away!

Stand-out beauty moments, and the icons behind them.

F

the eyes of men. Through this NYC movement, the red lip took on a meaning of rebellion and freedom.

rom preaching self-love to empowering the women of the suffragette movement, makeup has revolutionized expression for centuries. Today, artists are inserting themselves as modern-day icons, pushing the envelope of beauty in both scale and technique. Before we delve into our modern beauty icons, it’s important to bring attention to the gurus that have paved the way.

Marilyn Monroe and Her Famed Beauty Mark

Joséphine Baker and the Cat Eye

Moving to the beauty icons of the 21st century, it’s hard to know where to begin. Through social media, anyone has the power to make an impact on this billion-dollar industry that we call “beauty.” But who can we truly qualify as iconic?

The cat-eye, although simple, is an iconic beauty staple. And who better to have pioneered it than the French performing artist, Joséphine Baker. Painting this look on for nearly every performance, Baker radiated seductiveness through the design’s feline resemblance. The same connotation has lived on through today as it’s become part of many people’s daily armor. Indeed, it’s an addition that adds power to any look by bringing one’s gaze to the eyes.

Bette Davis and the Stand-Out Mascara

Thick layers of mascara on both upper and lower lash lines are a bold look that was first adorned by the iconic Bette Davis. Scrolling through pictures of the star, it’s hard to find one where she’s not rocking the look. Often pushed aside for being a more “natural” look, the thickly layered mascara is coming back. Actress Lucy Boynton is known for sporting it along with colorful eyeshadows at red carpets and award shows.

Elizabeth Arden and the Bold, Red Lip

The red lip has become known as the ultimate bold and empowering look for women around the world. Red, a color synonymous with passion, and on such a seductive part of the body, sends a message of control. It’s not surprising that this trend actually emerged from the suffragette movement of 1912 when supporters flocked to Elizabeth Arden’s New York home to receive their red lipstick. Arden’s beauty brand, although young, was a full supporter of equal rights. She decided to hand out lipsticks since she loved its shock factor in

If you try to claim that Marilyn Monroe wasn’t one of the first names to cross your mind when you read the words “beauty icon,” you’d be lying. Monroe not only rocked the cat-eye and the red lip but also became known for the beauty mark above her lip which many have replicated for decades.

Who are the Marilyn Monroe’s of the social media era? While scrolling through the beauty tag’s top hits, you’re sure to see a wide range of looks; from outrageous, creative expressions to the beauty of a natural look. Here are our picks for the “creme de la creme.”

Fenty and the Diversification of Beauty

Rihanna is an icon that’s known for her natural beauty. She’s also known as a modern revolutionary of the beauty industry with her brand, Fenty Beauty. Where Arden started a revolution with her red lip, Rihanna started one with something as simple as skin tone. Launching in 2017, Fenty Beauty turned the industry on its head by offering the most inclusive range of foundations seen to date. Fenty made a statement about a need for increased diversity in beauty, setting a new benchmark for beauty companies to strive for.

Emily Weiss and the Natural Dew

You may not know the name Emily Weiss, but you definitely know (and likely own a product by) the brand she founded: Glossier. Time describes Glossier as a brand that “allow(s) [people] to look like the best version of themselves, not an aspirational version of someone else.” This is precisely the vision that Weiss has not only for herself but for her brand.

Weiss is typically seen sporting the brand’s signature look: subtle fixings of mascara, brow gel, blush, and a light lip. This look is iconic not only for its “rawness,” but its acceptance of individuality.

Pat McGrath and Pushing the Envelope from the 80s to the 2020s

A young Pat McGrath found inspiration while shopping for beauty products with her mom at a time when women of color weren’t really considered in the industry. She wasn’t afraid to use products unconventionally and broke off from the “nude” norm of the grunge era. McGrath started out working with i-D Magazine and quickly skyrocketed in the fashion world. Currently, she conceptualizes about 80 looks for high-end fashion shows around the globe, all the while running her very own makeup brand, Pat McGrath Labs, which focuses on individuality. An iconic pioneer of bold and colorful looks, her appeal goes beyond the fashion world, reaching aspiring makeup artists worldwide.

Mimi Choi and the Power of Illusion

Mimi Choi (@mimles on Instagram), however, is quite the opposite of McGrath. The artistry that she employs to pull off her breathtaking, illusionary beauty looks is reshaping the idea of what a beauty icon is. A Canadian immigrant, born in Macau, Mimi gets her inspiration from her surroundings, surrealism, and—most surprising of all—her sleep paralysis. This condition occurs when the mind is conscious, but the body is unable to move when you wake up. During this time, Mimi often gets frightening visions that she utilizes as inspiration for looks. The list of beauty icons both past and present could truly go on and on. In an industry filled with creative powerhouses and influencers, where individuality is not only valued but encouraged, new iconic looks are sure to sprout up daily. So, keep your eyes peeled, and keep creating. Who knows, maybe the next beauty icon is you?

Fashion School Burnout: At FIT, hustle culture is alive and well, but is this go-getter atmosphere really just disguised toxic productivity?

If you’ve scrolled social media and landed on those videos of “fashion school girlies” as they guide you through a very “realistic” day in their life at fashion school, or perhaps have gotten lost in the infamous “dorm tour” videos on YouTube, you know all too well the romanticization of students who attend fashion-focused colleges.

From the very first day of class, we’re rattling off about the connections we have, packing our resumes with internships we “need” (no matter how sh*tty they are), accepting yet another opportunity aside from the many we’re already trying to maintain, and all the while, working our way through a packed academic semester.

But what you probably don’t see is that behind those lavish nights out, alluring fashion shows, and curated Instagram posts, comes the extreme pressures that coincide with the hustle culture that is more than prominent within the halls of such a school.

To say that juggling our time is near impossible is an understatement.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is no stranger to hustle culture— we practically invented it.

“Time management is definitely something I struggle with being a full-time student taking seven classes and trying to make it in the Big Apple,” says Luca Mornet, 20, an AMC student at FIT and full-time influencer. “I wouldn’t say I have it figured out, but I have found some ways to alleviate the stress.”

But FIT, it might be time for a reality check. But is packing our schedules doing us more harm than good? “Hustle culture” can be defined as the overarching desire to work, work, work for one’s professional gain or success, often at the expense of one’s mental health, relationships, or social life. All of us at FIT want that “leg up” and to get ahead in an industry that’s one of the most, if not the most, competitive industry there is, but in doing so, we might just be sacrificing our well-being in the process. By valuing our careers over all else, we often put taking care of ourselves on the backburner until we ourselves burn out.

“FIT students have always been extremely hardworking, often taking six or even seven demanding courses at a time, while doing internships, and working full or part-time jobs too,” says the School of Business and Technology professor. “Some can handle it, of

“Our students are probably more focused and career-driven than other college students; after all, they need to declare a major at the outset before they’ve taken a single course or had the opportunity to explore the options that are out there,” says a full-time professor at FIT’s School of Business and Technology. “They often come in knowing what they want to do, and can be laser-focused on their goals.” Yet with all of our goals and commitments, can we combat the burnout that’s almost inevitable as we spread ourselves too thin? “Despite already having a full plate, you always feel compelled these days to say ‘yes’ to every and any opportunity that comes your way,” says Vivianna Harris, 22, an Advertising and Marketing Communications (AMC) student at FIT. “Honestly, trying to balance everything is like playing a game of Jenga until it all falls apart and comes crashing down.”

word for workaholism—can be a direct result of this hustle culture. More often than not, this type of productivity is counterproductive due to its unhealthy ideal that we must be efficient at all times, no matter what. This can cause guilt for not getting “enough” done as well as lead to a lack of motivation.

While many of us know that overloading our schedules isn’t the most beneficial option, there’s truly an underlying sense that we must be a step, or even two, ahead of the peer next to us in order to succeed.

“I think many of us have struggled with motivation and burnout, especially in school, because of the isolation we experienced during the pandemic,” says Caroline Kennedy, 20, an AMC student at FIT. “I also find it difficult to avoid comparing myself to other students who seem to be on their way to success with internships, career opportunities, and finding connections.”

“From my experience at FIT, my peers are all motivated and seem to know exactly what they’re doing with their lives and what career path they’re aiming for. While I find this inspiring most of the time, it can also be very overwhelming,” says Claire Kennedy, 20, a student studying AMC at FIT. “I find myself anxious, thinking about my own future because of the pressure that we as students have to know what we want to do with our lives, which has definitely resulted in burnout for me.”

Perhaps we’re all biting off more than we can chew though, and in the process, creating habits that are harmful to our daily efficiency and ability to maneuver the pressures of life. “I’ve seen more students crash and burn. It actually was noticeable before the pandemic, but the pandemic has certainly exacerbated it,” says the School of Business and Technology professor. “To be clear, this is not just at FIT but across the board, which says something about students’ coping skills and ability to handle the ups and downs of real life. And this isn’t even real life; it’s only school.” When we decide to burn the candle at both ends, not fully understanding the consequences that loading our schedules has on us, we might just be sabotaging our own success.

While NYC may be “the city that never sleeps,” it might be time for us to take a few steps back and realize that we could be depriving ourselves of the opportunity to do our best where it matters most.

Though FIT’s “hustle and bustle” doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon, some students have found ways to alleviate some pressure and learn to navigate the reality of FIT’s competitive nature.

“First of all: a to-do list. To-do lists are a technique I use that helps me visualize my day and deal with what is the highest priority that day,” says Mornet. “Secondly, keeping an organized calendar. I used to write everything down on my phone but have found that I actually remember things better if I write them down on a physical calendar. Third of all: YOLO. You’ll definitely miss assignments and meetings, but it’s really not the end of the world.” And truthfully, it isn’t. We’ll all find our ways to success, but sacrificing our sanity in the process isn’t the answer.

Is it just a performative self-own? A desperate, fatally final, almost satirical attempt at empowerment? Or does it ultimately speak to the normalization of our culture’s incessant obsession with self-sabotage? The paradox of self-sabotage is the “logical illogic” of it all. We’re so meticulously committed to our own self-demise, perpetuating a vicious cycle of reacting and coping, yet the repercussions of our fatalistic mental vices never cease to confound us. Whether we’re conscious of our unhealthy coping mechanisms or not, there’s a psychological rationale behind this selfdestructive phenomenon. Understanding the reasoning behind these spurs of action, no matter how flawed, is integral for selfactualization and forgiveness. Just for a moment, allow yourself to release the weight of the self-created feelings of blame and guilt. There’s no logic in blaming yourself once you understand why you’re creating and making these choices. Take relationships, for example. Belonging and love are ranked third most necessary on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the psychological hierarchy that suggests people are motivated to fulfill basic, physiological needs before their more advanced, selftranscendence needs. The mere desire for emotional relationships drives human behavior.

“I love you,” I say to my friend as I hang up the phone. We’ve only known each other for six months and only recently did we begin exchanging that farewell phrase. Whether the conversation is two minutes or two hours long, we typically end it in the same manner. More than just a sweet goodbye, those words are a sign of our appreciation for one other. I care about her as she cares about me, but for us, it’s all platonic. Is this…weird? I would argue no, but for some, it’s definitely not as natural.

Platonic intimacy has many facets. Intimacy is commonly equated with physical affection, but it can also be emotional. Whether or not it’s attainable truly depends on the respective individuals. Many assume that platonic intimacy is always attainable, no matter the individual. If a relationship is all about connection, isn’t intimacy a given? Emotional intimacy is essential in order to form any trusting relationship, no matter the implications.

So, if some people can’t throw in those three words as easily as my friends and I can, does that mean their relationships aren’t as strong as ours? Not necessarily.

“This trust comes from lower expectations in close friendships,” say Hannah Mathews, 20, and Emily Orth, 20, both students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). “We experience Simply put, we need love. Love provides safety, humility, and comfortability in a way where we can just exist together. We kindness. It creates environments of openness and honesty. both like women and we both love each other, but we just don’t Further, studies have even show that when people are loved, have that romantic touch.” Hannah calls Emily her platonic soulmate. overall mental and physical health improves. In an interview with TIME, Dr. Helen Riess, Director of the Empathy and Relational Science Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, confirmed, “Just being in the presence of someone who greets us with positive regard and caring can actually lower those levels of cortisol and adrenaline and create greater homeostasis.” In other words, it brings stress levels down. Love even promises greater chances of longevity. According to the National Library of Medicine, a review of 148 studies done on social relationships showed that those with stronger relationships had a 50 percent higher likelihood of living longer. The observed connections weren’t only romantic— many of them were actually platonic. What’s more, intimacy was a key player in those relationships.

Conversely, this love can be scary. You put yourself in harm’s way when you open up your heart. “When you do lose [a best friend], it hurts ten times more,” expresses Lucy Sun, 19, a student at FIT. “That’s why I don’t have one best friend.” In the same way so many of us do, Sun wants to protect herself. And shouldn’t you be your own first priority? Others can’t seem to find the intersection between that of intimacy and a platonic relationship. “I feel like it’s obtainable for girls [because] it’s more acceptable in society,” says Rachel Eden, a 25-year-old New Jersey native living on Manhattan’s East Side. “But when you open up to a guy, you’re like, ‘Wait do you like me?’”

“If a relationship is all about connection, isn’t intimacy a given?”

Eden’s boyfriend, Nate Silveira, 28, holds similar views but thinks there are strong cultural differences. “I think it takes a guy a long time to open up due to society’s rules,” expresses Silveira. “But in European cultures, men seem more loving and open.”

Does a kinship still exist without intimacy? Can a brotherhood or sisterhood still be present? Justin seems to think so.

According to FIT student Justin Andrewin, intimacy is a vulnerability reserved for sexual and romantic partners. For him, if you become that close, lines can get too blurred to return to the platonic nature of the relationship. “If I’m intimate with someone, I immediately play it up as if we’re in love with each other,” he says.

Your answer may not be as clear as day, but the nuances of your own relationships are worth observing. It may very well strengthen bonds or help in showing more love to your friends and even yourself. What are we living for if not living to love and to connect?

What does intimacy mean to you? Do you think that platonic intimacy is attainable? Do you think that it’s necessary?

“Telephobia” or “phone phobia” is the fear and avoidance of making or picking up phone calls. Gen Z didn’t just wake up one day and decide to hate talking to people though. As a generation that is so used to sending texts and booking appointments online, talking on the phone is stressful because it doesn’t allow enough time to fully articulate a response. If it’s not the “perfect response,” we might end up overthinking it for hours or even days. Before any call, we’re anxiously typing out a script on our notes app and secretly hoping that the other person What if I sound too annoying? Will they won’t answer for the sake of our own understand what I’m saying? Maybe emotional well-being. I should just put this in an email… We’ve all ignored our ringing phone or For most people, a phone conversation dreaded dialing an unfamiliar number is no big deal. Why should it be? It’s at some point or another. But why does just a phone call after all. But for some, Gen Z seem to have so much trouble it’s an incredibly anxiety-inducing making traditional phone calls? situation. Being independent is all fun and games until it comes time to start scheduling your own doctor’s appointments. For many Gen-Zers, making a phone call means gathering up as much courage and energy as possible. Why does this so-called simple task stir up uneasy feelings and stressful thoughts? We think, Well maybe I can just deal with this tomorrow… or Maybe I’ll live without getting my bill sorted out… Do I really need to go to the dentist? I mean, my teeth have been in pain this long, what’re another few weeks?

“I had to change my password for my school login, and I was so nervous to talk to the person that I came up with a plan for my mom to pretend to be me on the phone,” recalls Gabriella Santos, 20, a student at St. John’s University. “I ended up making myself more nervous because I was like, ‘Well what if they can tell it’s not me?’ So, I did the call myself.”

“At my job, I have to call to cancel appointments when clients are running late. This can definitely cause me phone anxiety because I know the person on the other end might not react well,” says Kelly Murray, 20, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “Once I’ve made the call, I’m usually completely fine.” It’s difficult to have control over a call and predict what the person on the other end of the line will say. We have a bad habit of thinking the absolute worst about all our social interactions. “Wow, they’re really unprofessional” or “How many times are they going to stutter?” are some of the opinions we believe the customer service agent at the other end of the line is forming about us. In reality, most people are too focused on themselves to have time to think these irrational thoughts. Our brains decide to trick us into thinking that everyone is overanalyzing what we do.

Why Gen Z Won t Take Your Call Making a phone call seems simple, right? So, why can’t Gen Z seem to pick up the phone?

By Jacqueline Rappa Phone phobia is common among those who experience social anxiety. According to the Social Anxiety Association, “Social Anxiety Disorder” is the third largest mental health problem in the world today. Our mental health impacts how we feel and act throughout all stages of our lives. Having social anxiety prevents many people from pursuing the things that they want to do. Nervousness, a racing heart, and uncontrollable irrational thoughts are all common in people who struggle with this. “Our social skills have changed because of all the ways we can communicate,” says Erica Zisman, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Therapist in Long Island, New York. “The introduction of other ways to communicate like texting, Snapchat, and FaceTime has made it uncomfortable for Gen Z to make typical phone calls, especially to people they don’t know or to make appointments.”

Some tips for breaking the phone call barrier? 1. Expose yourself to more phone calls. The more you do so, the less overwhelming these situations will start to feel. This can even mean giving your friend a call instead of texting them a long paragraph of how your night went. Get comfortable with an unrehearsed conversation. 2. It’s beneficial to practice selfreflection. Acknowledging where you want to do better on your next call is important, but it’s just as important to acknowledge your success. Be proud of yourself for getting through something that was difficult to do.

Next time you notice yourself putting off a call, try to remain calm and remind yourself that it won’t be as bad as you think. Conquer your fear and pick up the phone on the first ring. No matter how irrational and exaggerated it may seem, phone phobia is universal, and it seems like we all go through it.

3. Make a list. Writing down all the calls you need to make, along with the dates and times you plan on doing so, can help relieve excess stress.

As dramatic as some people may believe it is, phone phobia is real and relatable. Those who suffer from it aren’t alone. Help is available and there are many ways to overcome this fear.

Similarly, songs composed in certain keys have been recognized to prompt certain reactions. This is also why we tend to associate certain modern musical styles with specific activities or circumstances. A perfect example is the D minor key, which is widely acknowledged as the “saddest key” in music. Examples of When you think of “coffee shop music,” you can probably this key can be found across genres, from Amy Winehouse’s hear the soft vocals and gentle guitar strumming of a folk song “Back To Black” to Tyler, The Creator’s “Lone.” The use playing in your head. Minor keys are typically associated with feelings of gloom when they’re used in music. Frank Ocean’s 2016 album, Blonde, is written almost exclusively in this format, and these artistic decisions could reasonably be credited for the album’s complex emotional layers. Similar complexity is visible in artists like The Weeknd, who has been notably recognized for the moody, haunting atmosphere he creates through his music. It should come as no surprise that a significant fraction of his releases is also composed in the minor mode. Of course, emotionally provocative music does not just have to be inherently sad. F major, commonly seen as the “happiest key,” is a similar example. Some songs in this composition include “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac, or “august” by Taylor Swift. This knowledge could lend itself to the belief that music is restrictive or that the creation of music as an art must follow a “rulebook” to be accepted, but what makes it so special is that this is not the case. Music is fluid, subject to constant interpretation and malleability. It’s never the same twice, and different for all those who hear it. It’s both suggestable and uncompromising. Regardless of key, production elements of music are deployed in limitless ways to achieve specific goals. The past few decades in particular have brought forth an era of experimentation and boundary expansion. Kanye West, for instance, earned praise for his use of gospel choirs in his 2004 album, The College Dropout.

Indie musician Cassandra Jenkins similarly built the atmosphere of her 2021 work, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, by interspersing audio samples from the streets of NYC and recordings of her conversations with strangers “‘august’ by Taylor Swift makes me think of past relationships throughout the album’s tracklist. The inclusion of these I’ve had and certain negative aspects of them, but the kinds of unconventional elements in music is integral to how production of the song has a sunny, almost bittersweet feeling emotional impacts take root in listeners. that sheds light on some of these otherwise sad experiences,”

How a single space can inspire creativity, productivity, and individuality. The most underrated ingredient in the creative process is, undoubtedly, connection that focuses on the way objects are placed in a space. There are plenty of psychological tricks that designers use to construct creations are born. the perfect atelier, however, it’s necessary to be aware of individuality. An artist’s atelier is often overlooked, however, it serves as the ultimate Every individual is unique when it comes to the design of an intimate house of creation. From British painter, Francis Bacon’s claimed space. “chaotic” studio space to Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg’s minimalist office approach, it’s obvious that extraordinary creations are “Designing an interior can be a very personal process,” says Melanie Millner, founder of The Design Atelier, an award-winning design firm. produced in spaces that inspire the inventor. “It’s important to dig deep and understand what resonates with who Creativity doesn’t just simply happen, it’s inspired, and takes time. And what works for one, will not work for all. Some can’t bear to work “External props aid in the creative process, which is why artists engage in unorganized circumstances, while others strongly align with Albert in drinking a certain type of coffee in a certain type of cup or listening Einstein’s famous quote, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” to music,” says Rajeev Kurapati, 45, a practicing physician and author. Atelier design heavily reflects individuality as it’s curated towards a user’s unique psychological needs. When designing a personalized workspace consider elements like color, lighting, shapes, and organization. These design factors hold a vital power in either elevating or hindering one’s creative process. To emphasize the importance of light, a survey by the HR advisory firm, Future Workplace, found that 47 percent of employees felt tired from the absence of natural light or a window in their office, and 43 percent reported feeling gloomy because of the lack of light. A number of studies on color theory have also proven that diverse palettes provoke a multitude of benefits and can achieve productivity and creativity.

Unconventional spaces, though, often generate the greatest creations. Artists in the music industry have proved that the need for an expensive studio is no longer necessary and recording music in a comfortable environment is a favorable approach. Music artist, Billie Eilish, has been widely recognized for recording her Grammy-winning songs in her brother’s childhood bedroom studio. “The bedroom has a very specific sound, very tight and intimate and closed and quiet. I love the way it makes vocals sound,” says Finneas O’Connell, Billie Eilish’s co-writer, producer, and older brother.

Popular musician, Steve Lacy, has acquired over 10.8 million Spotify “Colors are psychologically very powerful and can influence human listeners through his music that has been produced and recorded using behavior,” says Hyeseung Marriage-Song, an illustration professor at the his very own iPhone. His Grammy-nominated album, Apollo XXI, was created using the app Garage Band. Fashion Institute of Technology. When designing the perfect atelier, some tips to consider: Blue tones can aid in soothing stress, while red tends to boost productivity levels. Green tones, on the other hand, are an excellent middle-ground that can be used to achieve both a stress-free and productive environment.

“I had my manager buy me this studio to only record using my iPhone. I’m in this studio with all this equipment just to write this song on my phone… I didn’t need what I thought I did,” says Lacy of the process. This method of creation allows musicians like Lacy to execute their craft in an environment that best suits their personal creative needs.

TIES Unsure if the unexplainable closeness between your significant other, friend, or someone you just met is a soul tie or just you living in delusion again? Then this is for you.

BY

CRISTINA

GERMAN

What are Soul Ties? Why are they all over your feed? And why does your best friend keep calling her no-good ex one?

time. This all stems from the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians who put emphasis on the soul’s ability to aid you throughout your life.

Aspects of spirituality often trend in pop culture and get misinterpreted. The most important part of understanding soul ties is to take a look at the history and facts.

It’s argued that the first notable mention of soul ties is in the Christian bible, and this is where its negative and sexual connotations come from. 1 Corinthians 6:16, NIV reads, “Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’”

According to 26-year-old Santeria Priest, Emerald Beryl, who practices espiritismo (the belief that good and evil spirits affect health), “Energetic attachments are how we connect and share energy with another individual. They can form in many different ways, including that of sexual activity. Although, most of the time they are formed through body contact or even speaking to another person.” From soul ties to twin flames to karmic links and so on, there are so many possibilities on the labels for the connections we form. What’s challenging is realizing which title, if any, your relationships fall under while you’re living them out. Not everyone you feel close to has their psyche tied to yours, and believing in soul ties isn’t a necessity for your spiritual journey. To 20-year-old student Marie Aviles who lived with her alleged soul tie, “It’s something you just feel, but not to a normal extent of feeling. It’s overwhelming, beautiful, and incredibly strong. An inexplicable connection.” By the end of this, you should be able to decipher if the feeling you have resonates, or if you should consider seeing a psychiatrist instead of a psychic. How Did People Establish Their Existence? For as long as civilization has believed in souls, they’ve also believed in their ability to connect and reconnect throughout

To many, this introduces the sacred aspect of intimacy and the idea of being mindful of who you chose to have sex with, because ultimately (without direct mention), you’ll become united in some metaphysical aspect. Religious advisors have quoted this verse to enforce the idea of sex “tying” you to your partner and the serious repercussions that follow when you’re not married. However, this idea has been modernized, reclaimed, and not always referred to as such a detrimental sex-driven occurrence. Soul ties are now recognized as two attached souls in any kind of relationship. On the other hand, sex therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, De-Andrea Blaylock-Johnson, describes soul ties as “an over-spiritualization of normal feelings.” During an orgasm, the “bonding hormone” oxytocin is released, but it can also be released when you’re listening to music with your best friend, holding your partner’s hand, or even eating a plate of homemade food after months of meals at the dining hall. Not everyone feels connected to their recent Tinder hook-up and that’s just real, but there are moments where people look at someone, intimate or not, and see further than what meets the eye. These moments leave you feeling as if God, the universe, or some higher power calculated your paths crossing. Your intuition tells 125

you whether it’s some spiritually orchestrated connection or just oxytocin doing its thing. Signs of a Soul Tie 1) They come into your life at a time where you need them or the lesson they provide, and you instantly feel extremely familiar and comfortable with them. You can tell when you met them that it was the beginning of something great. 2) When it comes to your soul tie, reactions are stronger and more emotionally motivated in comparison to other relationships. Sometimes you find yourself getting jealous when your friends laugh a little too hard at their jokes or catch yourself reading too deep into their texts which spawns a borderline Kanye moment. 3) They’re full of what you lack and vice versa. You complement each other well, although you may be drastically different, to the point of making each other feel complete. 4) You find stimulation in your conversations and relationship that elicits intense growth. 5) You wake up thinking about them. You’re dissecting their Instagram posts. They’re the first person you want to tell about your annoying coworker at your new job or an argument with your parents. You go to sleep dreaming about them. 6) Their feelings and energy start to become yours. You find yourself getting upset and defensive over things they would, even the little things, like when their favorite artist is being bashed in the media. 7) Your feelings and energy become theirs. Now they’re reading their own horoscope and meditating after establishing that’s never something they’ve even considered. 8) You’re drawn back to them even when you’ve convinced yourself the relationship served its purpose. Life without them just feels off. Soul Tie vs. Karmic Link Even when a soul tie has ended, positively or negatively, you’ll walk away from it with a better sense of self and feeling more prepared for your life’s journey of self-love. “It created a safety net for me for so long. I would always have this person in my life to comfort me, love me, and hold me. Comfort for such an extended period of time doesn’t allow room for growth. It hurts, but sometimes you have to release your soul tie in order to grow into the person you want to become,” Marie explains. A karmic link, also known as a karmic, will teach you about the world around you. It will awaken a new consciousness that avoids a relationship similar to it forever.

the moments we were ‘good’ more special, but those were only good when she was a decent person, and that wasn’t often,” says Jailen Todd, 19, who believes her ex-girlfriend was her own karmic encounter. Karma is the universe’s response to one’s actions, words, or thoughts. Karmics are manifested and embodied in family, work, or spousal relationships that do not bring a single positive aspect to your life. As Jailen describes, a place of “stagnancy with no room to grow.” A karmic could be enticing at first and draw you in, but it is never worth the mental, spiritual, and sometimes physical abuse they put you through. Their purpose is to guide you, to help make sense of why they came into your life, and to never make those same mistakes again. A soul tie could become combative and intense but will never feel like a fraction of the drain from a karmic. Even when head to head on a disagreement, a resolution is found and pride is disregarded through a mutual understanding of what your relationship is or was worth. If you’re even considering the possibility of someone in your life being a karmic…run. How Do I Break it? As Priest Emerald Beryl says, “When it comes down to it, we can create a light energetic chord that can help stabilize a healthy connection with the person, all the way to a heavy dangerous energetic chord where the attraction and attachment can be so strong, it’s obsessive. How you create as well as break them will depend on those variables.” You don’t always have to bring matters into your own hands… sometimes the universe will separate you two all on its own. You could check your phone and there’s a missed call from them, so you try to call back the next day but this time they’re busy. Maybe all of your plans are falling apart, and no one is solely to blame. Or perhaps you just don’t feel the urge to check their latest status update; in fact, you haven’t even viewed their socials in weeks. Just as easily as souls tie, they can also undo themselves with no harm done and no love lost. This isn’t the case for everyone, though—if you’re looking for a way to break a connection so intense in both this world and the metaphysical, the best answer is to heal within. “It’s like losing a part of you, but it’s definitely a part I know I needed to let go,” claims Marie. Realizing a relationship is coming to a conclusion, indefinitely or for the moment, is hard and can cause pain for both parties. Centering your energy through meditation and affirmations are great rituals that can aid you in doing so, but the healing process doesn’t look the same for everyone. No soul tie is worth losing yourself. See it for what it was, aid for your soul’s ascension, and continue moving forward.
