Los Abrigos Meaning "the shelter", Los Abrigos consists mostly of a picturesque harbour boasting two little beaches lined with numerous cafes and bars which are perfect for relaxing in and enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this typically Canarian fishing village.

Located in the south of Tenerife between El Medano and the Golf del Sur in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, it would be quite easy to overlook this small promenade by the sea but Los Abrigos, although small, is well worthy of a visit.

Los Abrigos There is not much more to say about this village except that if you like sea food, this is the place to go.

Los Abrigos is famed for its lovely harbour and its fabulous selection of fish restaurants shaped around it, all with an amazing almost unlimited selection of locally caught fresh fish, some of which is so fresh that it is still swimming.

Self Improvement How To Make Lasting Changes For The Year Ahead

Any Time Is A Good Time For Healthy Changes

22

Essential Tenerife

LIFESTYLE

Around this time every year, many people set out to make resolutions for change, and each year, many of those resolutions go unresolved. This is not necessarily as a result of people’s lack of desire for a better life; it’s just a fact of life that change is difficult. Our day-to-day habits become automatic, and changing them requires constant effort until a new habit is formed.

In terms of making necessary alterations in your expectations, attitudes, and methods of change, try some of the following ideas, they may help...

LIFESTYLE How To Make Lasting Changes For The Year Ahead Most people make resolutions that in all good faith they are determined to keep, but a better choice, in actual fact, would be to create goals. So, what’s the difference? With traditional resolutions, people generally approach change with the attitude, “From now on, I will no longer . . . ” The problem with this is, after one or two slip-ups, people feel like failures and tend to drop the whole effort, falling easily back into familiar patterns. By setting goals instead, the aim is to work toward a desired behavior. The key difference is that people working toward goals expect that they won’t be perfect at first, and are pleased with any progress they make. Rather than trying to be perfect from the outset, they allow motivation and pride to do the work. The following ideas can help you with meeting your “New Years Goals” ...

Essential Tenerife

25

LIFESTYLE Remember That It’s A Process: Expect to slowly develop change, rather than maintaining perfection and feeling let-down if you don’t achieve it immediately.

Work Your Way Up: In setting goals for new behaviour, aim for once or twice a week, rather than everyday. For example, instead of saying, “I’ll go to the gym everyday”, plan for “every Wednesday” or, better yet, sign up for an exercise class, and you can work your way up to more often.

Set Yourself Up To Succeed: Set small, attainable goals, and add more steps as you complete each one. This way you gradually work your way toward the life you want and the necessary changes, but you experience much more ‘success’ along the way, rather than feeling like a failure if you don’t experience ultimate change overnight.

Reward Your Progress: While many of your resolutions carry their own reward, changing your habits can be challenging, and it’s sometimes easier to do so if you have a little extra help. Providing extra rewards for yourself can help you to stay on track and maintain your motivation, even if you sometimes don’t feel like making the effort solely for the sake of the benefit the change itself will create.

26

Essential Tenerife

Have A Goal Each Month: Like most people, you may have several changes you’d like to make in your life; if so, it may be a good idea to tackle one each month. This way:1) you can focus more, as you won’t be trying to make several sweeping changes at once. 2) you can commit yourself each month to a new idea, so you keep growing all year and selfimprovement becomes a way of life. 3) you can build on each success, so you can first free up time before you take on a new hobby or get involved in an important cause, for example. Also, habits generally take 21 days to form. This setup enables you to devote more energy to forming new habits a lot easier, before moving on to the next, so you’re not just relying solely on willpower.

Any Time Is A Good Time For Healthy Changes Team Up: Have a friend who knows your goals, and encourage each other, even if you’re working on separate goals at the time. This will provide you with someone who can give you a little encouragement when you need it.

Reward Small Successes: Divide your goals into small steps and have a reward waiting at the completion of each one.

Spanish Style Cuisine

The

Tortilla Española or Spanish Omelette

The Tortilla Española or Spanish Omelette is, without doubt, the most commonly served dish in all provinces of Spain. It is also called Tortilla de Patata or Potato Omelette. Bars and cafés serve it as a tapa or appetizer, but can often be served as a light meal in some Spanish homes. The Spanish also make bocadillos or sandwiches from it by placing some between two pieces of a baguette.

Essential Tenerife

29

Tortilla Española The Tortilla Española or Spanish Omelette is very simple to make, taking approximately 35 minutes in total (preparation - 10 minutes and cooking - 25 minutes). Ingredients •6-7 medium potatoes, peeled •1 whole onion •5-6 large eggs •2-3 cups of olive oil •Salt to taste If you have never made this simple recipe before, then follow the step-bystep guide below for the perfect Tortilla Española (Spanish Omelette) every time. Once you have made the perfect omelette, you may even want to experiment with some of the variations suggested at the end. This "tortilla española" or "tortilla de patata" makes 8-10 servings as an appetizer, or can serve 5-6 as a main course.

30

Essential Tenerife

Step-by-step 1. Cut the peeled potatoes in half lengthwise. Then, with the flat side on the cutting surface, slice the potato in pieces approximately 3-4mm thick. Make sure to separate the pieces that stick together. It is not necessary to slice the potatoes wafer thin and it is best not to use a food processor because most will slice the potatoes too thin. If you slice them a bit thick, don’t worry – it will simply take a bit longer for them to cook.

Spanish Omelette 5. Leave in the pan until the potatoes are cooked. If you can poke a piece of potato with a spatula and it easily breaks in two, your potatoes are done. 6. Remove from the pan with a slotted spatula. Place the potato and onion mixture in a colander for a few minutes to allow more oil to drain (place a plate underneath to catch the olive oil and you can use it again). 7. While the mixture is draining, crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl and beat by hand with a whisk or fork. Pour in the potato onion mixture. Mix together with a large spoon. 2. Peel and chop the onion into 6mm pieces. Put potatoes and onions into a bowl and mix them together. Salt the mixture. 3. In a large, heavy, non-stick frying pan, heat the olive oil on medium high heat. Drop a single piece of potato into the oil to ensure it is hot enough to fry. 4. Carefully place the potato and onion mixture into the frying pan, spreading them evenly over the surface. The oil should almost cover the potatoes. You may need to turn down the heat slightly, so the potatoes do not burn.(If the oil is too hot, the potatoes will brown rapidly on the outside, but still be raw on the inside).

Essential Tenerife

31

Tortilla Española 8. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil into a small, non-stick frying pan (aprox. 25cm) and heat on medium heat. Be careful not to get the pan too hot because the oil will burn (or the tortilla will!) 9. When hot, stir the potato onion mixture once more and “pour” into the pan and spread out evenly. Allow the egg to cook around the edges. Then you can carefully lift up one side of the omelette to check if the egg has slightly “browned.” The inside of the mixture should not be completely cooked and the egg will still be runny. 10. When the mixture has browned on the bottom, you are ready to turn it over to cook the other side. Carefully take the frying pan to a sink. Place a large dinner plate (30cm) upside down over the frying pan. With one hand on the frying pan handle and the other on top of the plate to hold it steady, quickly turn the frying pan over and the omelette will “fall” onto the plate. 11. Place the frying pan back on the hob and put just enough oil to cover the bottom and sides of the pan, approximately 1-2 tablespoons. Let the pan warm up again for 30 seconds or so. Now slide the omelette (which is probably still a bit runny), into the frying pan, using a spatula to catch any egg mixture that runs out. Now use the spatula to shape the sides of the omelette. Let it cook for a further 3-4 minutes on this side then turn the heat off and let the tortilla rest in the pan for 2 minutes.

32

Essential Tenerife

Spanish Omelette 12. Carefully slide the finished omelette onto a plate. To serve as a main course, slice it into 6-8 pieces like a pie. Serve sliced French bread on the side. If you are serving as an appetizer, slice a baguette into pieces about 15mm think. Cut the tortilla into 4cm squares and place a piece on top of each slice of bread. It is simply delicious served with sofrito, a fried tomato sauce that is made all over Spain (tomatoes, onions, garlic, green peppers and olive oil sautéed in a frying pan). There are many of variations of the classic Tortilla Española such as; •Green Pepper - Add 1 green or red bell pepper (chopped) to the potatoes and onions and fry.

•Chorizo - Slice a Spanish chorizo sausage and add to the potato and onion mixture after frying. Or, simply slice Spanish chorizo and combine with beaten eggs in the frying pan. •Ham - Using a couple of thick slices (6mm) of ham, finely chop them. Then add the pieces to the potato and onion mixture after frying. Bacon or smoked ham will also work well for this variation. Be careful to adjust the salt accordingly, since the ham may be salty.

MUSIC Bright Lights: In some cases it can be more than a bit irritating when an album is repackaged, and additional tracks are added for the new 'edition' to hit the shops. Conversely, the flip side of that is that you already know most of the tracks and sometimes, as is most definitely the case here, the artist and record company have bothered to Click here to go to the webinclude some really site and play a sample of all worthwhile additional the songs material.

Ellie Goulding Click here to go to the website and play a sample of individual songs 'Lights' in its original guise, was welcoming, melodic folky dance music with just enough production bite to keep things fresh and interesting. 'Starry Eyed' was a clever single but 'This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)', which really should have been a single, and 'Wish I Stayed' were even better. Another standout track was 'Your Biggest Mistake', which employs effective sampled vocals and a killer chorus. However, this new repackaged version is most definitely worth buying again, even if you have the original, for the seven additional tracks, all of which add something to the album. In fact 'Bright Lights' feels like a natural extension of the already existing collection. Standout of the additional tracks is 'Animal' with an intro that collides into a surprisingly bass-driven production. Running it a close second is 'Believe Me', which again places Ellie's vocals against a bassier dance sound.

LEAGUE 1

La Liga - Journada 16 Espanyol 1 - Barcelona 5 Barcelona go marching on! Guardiola's side clocked up another big victory, beating city neighbours Espanyol 1-5 to move five points clear at the top pending Real Madrid's game on Sunday (see below). Pochettino's side started the day in fourth place having won all their games at home this season, but they went behind early on when Pedro ran on to Messi's return pass to shoot low past Kameni. And a few minutes later Xavi got a second with a shot from wide on the right after his first effort had hit Dani Alves in the six yard box. Valdés had to be at his best to save from Callejón before the break, but Pedro made it three with an hour on the clock after Kameni could only push out a long shot from Messi. Two minutes later Osvaldo ran on to a long ball to pull one back, and the striker could have scored again when he shot straight at the keeper on a quick counter-attack. But after that David Villa took advantage of through balls from Messi and Xavi to add two more later on, and with the game won Guardiola took off Iniesta so the appreciative crowd could applaud his gesture in the World Cup final, when he dedicated his winning goal to his deceased friend Dani Jarque.

Real Madrid 1 - Sevilla 0 Real Madrid stay two points behind leaders Barcelona after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday evening. Mourinho's side were missing the suspended Xabi Alonso and Marcelo, and their only real shot at goal in the first half came from Di María, Palop turning his effort round the post, with the visitors having the better chances up to then. Ten minutes in to the second half Negredo broke free only to shoot over the top, and a few minutes later Madrid were left with ten men after Carvalho picked up a second booking. With a quarter of an hour to go Özil passed to Pedro León whose shot hit Zokora on the hand, and while most players were claiming a penalty, the ball fell to Di María on the left by-line, and as Palop came out to him he found a gap to slot the ball in to the net.

LEAGUE 2 Journada 15

Tenerife P - P Granada

This game, scheduled for a Sunday evening kick-off with Tenerife playing host to mid-table Granada was postponed due to the air traffic controllers strike. No date has been set as yet for the fixture to take place.

Journada 16

Recreativo 3 - 0 Tenerife

Tenerife are really beginning to become rooted down in the drop zone after losing 3-0 to Recreativo. The Andalusians themselves had been struggling until recently, but after seven games without defeat they were full of confidence. With half time looming Pablo Sánchez got on the end of Dani's cross to give Carlos Ríos's side the lead, and Dani himself got the second on the hour mark after Sánchez returned the favour. The Canary Islanders had no reply, and with the game in injury time Jesús Vázquez headed in an Emilio Sánchez free kick to take his side four points clear of the danger area.

Journada 17

Tenerife 0 - 3 Betis

A second successive 3-0 defeat, this time at home, albeit against runaway leaders Betis. Rubén Castro and Emaná (2), were the goal scorers in a fairly one-sided match, the last before the Christmas break. Tenerife will now have to start 2011 from the foot of the table with a mountain to climb.

Las Galletas

TENERIFE GUIDE Los Cristianos One of the most popular resorts in the entire Canary Islands, and just 16 km west of the airport. With the wonderful golden sand beaches situated around the harbour, the town has managed to retain some of the character of its original fishing village whist developing into one of the largest tourist areas on the Island. There are plenty of things to do, from the pleasure cruises, glass-bottomed boats, and ferries to neighbouring islands, as well as sun-bathing, watersports, then relaxing in the vast array of pubs, clubs and restaurants, all within walking distance. Playa de las Americas Very much a purpose built resort, Las Americas has grown to become Tenerife's biggest and most popular holiday destination. From it’s clean man-made sandy beaches to it’s hundreds of quality hotels and first class facilities, this is truly a sun worshipper's idea of paradise. Everyone is catered for with a wealth of beach, sea and leisure activities, and there is something for all the family with the Aquapark and new Siam Water Kingdom all within walking distance of as many bars, restaurants and clubs as you are ever likely to need.

Icod de los vinos Site of the 1,000 year old Drago (Dragon) Tree, the oldest and largest in existence, situated next to the plaza of the Iglesia de San Marcos.

Mount Teide National Park At a height of 3,720 metres, the summit of Mount Teide is the highest point of the Canary Islands, and the surrounding area was declared a National Park in 1954. Roads through the park allow visitors to drive across old lava fields and sample the lunarlike landscape within the old crater at around 2,100 metres above sea-level with El Teide dominating the centre. It is possible to access within 200 metres of the summit of this dormant vocano by cable car, and view the surrounding peaks, some of which are evidence of more recent volcanic activity. Vilaflor High above the coast of southern Tenerife, yet just an hours drive away, Vilaflor is a beautiful village famous for its wine, cheese and spring water, as well as being the highest village in Tenerife. On the road to Mount Teide, it offers spectacular views, as well as local scenery, arts and crafts. Las Galletas Located on the south coast between Los Cristianos and the airport, Las Galletas is a typical Canarian village with narrow streets, beach front promenade, picturesque harbour and a cafe style pedestrian centre. There is a small, natural beach by the side of the fishing boats, which supply the daily fish market and excellent local restaurants, both here and in the adjoining neighbourhoods that make up Tenbel and Costa del Silencio.

Los Abrigos

TENERIFE GUIDE Santa Cruz Tenerife's vibrant capital city, set in the north-east corner of the island, offers a cosmopolitan blend of culture, heritage, beaches and classical architecture. Santa Cruz is a wonderful mix of old and new, with its museums, parks, plazas, art, fine dining, and of course shopping, which means it really does have something for everyone to enjoy. Santa Cruz is also the home of a dazzling array of festivals, events, and venues for those wishing to inject a bit of culture into their holiday. As well as being the site for one of the biggest carnivals in the world, its amazing sights number amongst it the magnificent Auditorio de Tenerife, home to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. El Medano A small town on the south coast just 5km east of Los Abrigos, Medano is famous for its long, natural, sandy beaches and offshore breezes, making it the ideal spot for wind and watersport enthusiasts. The centre and boardwalk area mingle health and surf shops with seafront cafes, and is a very popular resort with the locals.

Los Abrigos A traditional fishing village situated between Las Chafiras and El Medano. It has a fantastic selection of seafood restaurants around the picturesque harbour where the local fishing boats drop off their catch daily.

Guimar A quiet town set in the valley of Guimar to the east of the island, it has a reputation as the perfect spot for a slice of “rural” tourism. More recently, the mysterious stone pyramids on the outskirts of the town, attracted the interest of the author and world famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who has researched similar structures in Mexico and Peru, and his exhibition on the site of the “pyramids” has become a huge tourist attraction. Puerto de la Cruz The oldest resort in the Canary Islands, located on the northern coast, this town was the birthplace of tourism in the Canaries and still has a lot to offer. It is more traditional, in contrast with the more modern resorts of the south, and is certainly greener, with a variety of botanical gardens due to the north’s more temperate climate. Home to a number of buildings of historical and artistic value, it is also the site of one of the islands most famous tourist attractions, the Loro Parque.

Los Gigantes

TENERIFE GUIDE Los Gigantes A beautiful resort on the west coast of the island set on a hillside next to the towering cliffs from which it gets its name. From the natural beach made up of black volcanic sand, to the idyllic marina with its yachts, excursion boats, cafes and bars, or on to the small shops and restaurants tucked away in the narrow streets, this fantastic resort has someting for everyone. Playa San Juan A bustling seaside and fishing village on the road to Los Gigantes, Playa San Juan has undergone some development in recent years. It retains a working harbour, two beaches, the second of which is a new sandy beach, and a long promenade with shops and restaurants serving traditional food and of course, fresh fish every day. It is also close to the fantastic premier Abama golf and spa resort.

Puerto Santiago

La Orotava An historic town in the north of the island, notable for its typical Canarian architecture, monuments, and culture. Set in the valley from which it takes its name, its most notable landmark is the Casa de los Balcones which epitomises the island's heritage. Masca A popular and picturesque tourist spot situated in the more mountainous area to the north west of the island, with an impressive gorge that leads down to the sea. Noted for its scenery, and ideal for hiking. Candelaria Just south of the capital SantaCruz, Candelaria is a popular tourist destination of historical and religious significance, as the home of the Basilica and the Black Madonna, and the town's main plaza with its beach and Guanche statues.

The FairFX Prepaid MasterCard® is a prepaid card which gives market-leading Euro and US Dollar exchange rates, low cash withdrawal fees and doesn't charge for purchases made in the card currency. What makes this card different from other debit or credit card alternatives? It allows UK residents to own a pre-paid currency card in Euros or US Dollars. Unlike most credit or debit cards issued in the UK, because the FairFX Card is denominated in a foreign currency, when you use it abroad to pay for goods you won't be charged any transaction fee. There is a low fee of €1.50 or $2.00 for cash withdrawals. Also, because money is stored in Euros or Dollars you won't suffer from uncompetitive exchange rates when using the card. Card users can typically expect to save as much as 10% on Euro and US Dollar exchange rates. The lifespan of the card is 3 years. You can load it as many times as you want during that spell. It's normally £9.95, but FREE* if you order through this special link!! (*Subject to a minimum load of just €10 or $20 which is added to the card balance.) Apart from that the only charge for normal use of the card is a €1.50 or $2.00 fee for cash withdrawals. See website for full details. >>> CLICK HERE

MONEY New Year’s Resolutions for Your Finances

A recent survey appears to show that over 30% of us are less likely to make New Year’s resolutions about our personal finances this year than last year, saying health and relaxing are more important. Rather than “save more money”, the common perception in these difficult times appears to be to return to a more balanced take on life, to focus on families, career and health, in addition to finances. Now, this all sounds very good, but it’s still important to save. However, we don’t necessarily have to sacrifice our health or happiness to do so. Here are some money resolutions that can improve your mind, spirit and bank account.

MONEY New Year’s Resolutions for Your Finances Try To Be More Charitable All studies taken in difficult economic times show charitable giving to be hardest hit as it proved to be in 2010. Whether donating to charity or just treating your friend to a latte and muffin, giving is not only thoughtful but can make you happy. A recent survey concluded that spending just 5€ a day on someone else would make you more happy than spending that money on yourself. For those with deeper pockets there are always tax benefits when giving to a legitimate charity.

Find a Money Partner It’s important to have a partner in your financial life who can knock some sense into you when you feel the impulse to spend or when you are ignoring your bills. It might be your best friend, sibling, or parent. Relay your goals to this person so that he or she can help remind you of them when your judgment gets a little cloudy. Turn to them for advice. We often assume that our financial strife is unique, however as soon as you begin networking and discussing your problems, you’ll realize that others have been in your shoes and have persevered.

MONEY MONEY Stick With Cash While it’s important to maintain a good credit rating and using our credit cards responsibly helps to achieve that, keep in mind that credit card users tend to spend more money than if they used cash. A recent study found that people tend to spend 15-25% more when using credit cards than when using cash. And, another study found that people who paid cash at the local grocery store were, in general healthier than their plastic-wielding counterparts at the large supermarket. While at McDonald’s, they found that the average transaction rose from 4.50€ to 7.00€ when customers used plastic instead of cash, the inference being that it was easier to upgrade your meal or choose an additional item when it was just “going on the plastic”. The other reason using cash is better is because it keeps us honest with our money. We make better choices because we are forced to think twice about our purchases, especially if we have to break into big bills like a 20€ or even a 50€ note.

MONEY New Year’s Resolutions for Your Finances Establish a Rule of Thumb We like rules of thumb because they’re handy. They help when we have trouble making decisions. We have “diet” rules of thumb - “no sweets during the week” or “no midnight snacking” - and they help us stay on track. Some good money rules could be: “I won’t buy anything over 50€ without consulting with my spouse or partner” or “No more open tabs at the bar!”

Set Aside a Money Zone This is all about staying organized and clear of financial clutter. Find a space in your home - it could be a table in your kitchen, bedroom, wherever - and design this space so that you actually want to go there to set goals, pay your bills and deal with budgeting. Surround your “money zone” with images of your goals, family and inspirations - all the reasons you should stay motivated. Have folders for all your monthly statements. Have a safety box for secure papers like insurance certificates, etc. And have smaller boxes for receipts and warranties.

Automate Save, as well as pay your bills automatically. You’ll sleep better at night knowing you did. It’s less painful than taking money out of your wages yourself and depositing it in a savings account or handing it to your utility company. According to a recent survey, 80% of people say the most effective way to build personal savings is to automatically transfer funds from your wages to a savings account. As an interesting aside, research also finds that people with the highest level of well-being had a high level of financial security.

Turn a Passion or Pastime into Cash Who wouldn’t like to make some extra money in the New Year? One of the best ways to do that is to identify a skill or hobby that you’re passionate about and turn that into a revenue stream. This could be teaching a foreign language, designing web sites, making jewelry or any number of things. When you work at a job you love, it won’t feel like work!
