ENJOY BRAGA

Welcome to Braga! Founded by the Romans (Bracara Augusta), Braga is located in the heart of the Minho region, North of Portugal. Braga combines history, culture, arts, religion traditions, and R&D infrastructures. All this in an urban, cosy and well preserved environment. This guide intends to help you making the best out of the city. Enjoy it! Find more in www.cm-braga.pt

the Baroque and Rococo styles are also visible. Built in the18th and 19th centuries, it includes the church, the Sacred Road’s chapels and an imposing staircase you should climb to demonstrate that you are a person of faith. Don’t miss a trip in the elevator moved by water. Porta Nova Arch Considered a national monument since 1910, this was the old gate to Braga’s city. Opened in 1512 by order of the Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, the monument you observe today was built in 1722, and should be included in your visit! At the end of Rua Andrade Corvo In the center of the city

Casa dos Coimbras This curious exemplar of Braga’s civilian architecture has its origins in an old house of the middle XV century. In the year 1505, João de Coimbra bought it and since that time it was often remodeled, including the construction of Casa dos Coimbras’ chapel. You can’t miss some of their windows in Manueline style that resisted a demolition in 1906. The IAMCR Reception on the 19 July will take place here.

Sé de Braga (Cathedral) The expression “as ancient as Braga’s cathedral” is very common in Portugal. Today we visit a temple that substituted another one destroyed in 967; its reconstruction started in 1070, so the cathedral is older than the Portuguese kingdom itself (1143). This building has been renovated several times over the centuries, which explains its big dimension and its astonishing overlapping of styles. A visit to the Cathedral’s Treasure Museum is also strongly advised. Tuesday to Sunday: 09h00/12h30 - 14h00/18h30 Rua D. Paio Mendes Tel: (+351) 253 263 317
