HERBS FOR HEALTH LAVENDER: The relaxing and sedative aroma of lavender has an almost immediate effect as soon as it hits the sensitive membranes inside your nose. Soaking in a lavender scented bath relaxes away mild depression and anxiety and may even lower high blood pressure and improve circulation. Lavender is used internally for insomnia, restlessness and nervous stomach irritations and for external use in baths for the treatment of functional circulatory disorders. Lavender is a wonderful sleep aid. Combine with valerian, or chamomile for a relaxing tea, diffuse in an aroma lamp for restful sleep, use it in your evening bath, sprinkle a few drops of lavender on sheets and pillowcases, and add dried lavender flowers to sleep.

TURMERIC: Western science confirms that turmeric is a first rate anti-inflammatory herb. It contains at least two chemicals, curcumin and curcuminoids, that act to decrease inflammation much like NSAID COX-2 that inhibit the production of prostaglandins which are linked to arthritic inflammation. This anti-inflammatory effect may be why consumption of turmeric is also connected to a reduced occurrence of cancers, cataracts, and Alzhemimers. 1Turmeric has been shown to be an effective pain reliever in cases of rheumatoid arthritis.

CINNAMON: Baked goods are more diabetic friendly with spices like cinnamon and stevia which lessen the need for sugar. Some very interesting recent research suggests that cinnamon cassia (Cinnamomum aromaticum) is effective in improving blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Botanicals like bitter melon and fenugreek can be used along with modern medicinal therapy with managing diabetes, both as medicinal foods and supplements. Bitter melon improves the body’s ability to use blood sugar and improves glucose tolerances and it’s recommended to eating one small melon a day. Burdock root may also play a useful role in helping to control blood sugar levels due to the inulin content of the root. In Europe, the fresh root is used for lowering blood sugar. Please do your own research on all herbs and consult with your doctor before taking anything. This information was taken from the internet and is not meant for diagnoses. 5_HerbsforHealth_FullPage.indd 1

FUN PLACES TO GO Chattahoochee Bend State Park Chattahoochee Bend State Park showcases a spectacular tract of wilderness in northwest Coweta County. Located in a graceful bend of the Chattahoochee River, the park is a haven for paddlers, campers and anglers. At 2,910 acres, Chattahoochee Bend is one of Georgia’s largest state parks, protecting five miles of river frontage. A boat ramp provides easy access to the water, while more than six miles of wooded trails are open for hiking and nature photography. An observation platform provides nice views of the river and forest. A wooded trail follows the stream to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War. Beyond the mill, the trail climbs rocky bluffs to provide views of the beautiful rapids below. Additional trails wind through fields and forest, showcasing ferns, magnolias, wild azaleas and hardwoods. Park rangers lead informative hikes to these areas throughout the year. LIFE INSURANCE, IT’S NEVER TO LATE As a committed life benefit agent who much enjoys serving seniors and their families throughout Paulding, Douglas, Cobb, and surrounding areas, I commend the staff, volunteer participants, and quality service providers whose efforts benefit our local seniors and their families. My daily experience and primary topic involves financial well-being which is vital in pursuit of a happy, secure, quality of life in later retirement years, just as with other lifestyle factors like vibrant mental & physical activities, health/ nutritional maintenance, and aging in place initiatives for the home. The desire and need for adequate life insurance coverage comes naturally for most who are 55 and up (65% either have or are considering life insurance and nearly 80% claim they want or could use more), so there isnít a lot of need for added convincing or encouragement for calls to action. Iíve found that most of us simply want/need a good info source for understanding the best comparison choices in today’s market of many options. Based on current health, age, and budget of every insured, there is a definite need for deciding wisely on the right plan fit. The motivator is always protecting or aiding the financial welfare of loved ones and the need is to have coverage in force that will be the best value for the long term. Very consistently, I see people making first-time inquiries for coverage who talk about how they’ve recently lost a loved one and dealt with the stress of paying for unexpected financial burdens that arise from final expenses whether it be for unplanned funeral services or the costs of outstanding mortgages, other debt, or needed home repairs and renovation required to make the family property sale-ready. At the same time, this usually only happens to someone once for them to act with determination to avoid any future risk of going through it again. For them, staying prepared in advance with proper, adequate life insurance becomes a primary necessity as well as spreading the word to everyone they care about on the urgency of not delaying the decision to act. *Delayed action on getting coverage in place when affordable usually only works against best interests and hopes. My personal testimony behind helping people acquire the right coverage is at least partially inspired by the unexpected loss of my 41 year old brother-in-law in ‘09. We lived the unforgettable experience of normal emotional grieving coupled with having to decide alongside our siblings how to fund the sudden cost of his funeral services. Although blessed to get through it, we did utilize a temporary loan for many months as we gradually sold the majority of his personal assets to help cover the expense. It’s now a clear and natural desire of mine to spread awareness that helps others avoid the same stressful burden. Some basic economic realities that support the importance of wisely handling insurance and other financial investments such as home mortgage finance, retirement accounts, medicare coverage, etcÖ.. Over 50% of Seniors depend on approx..90% or more of their income from Social Security, and their average assets are only about one yearís worth of income. Only 12% of people retire with financial independence for the remainder of life. Surviving spouses and single seniors generally have smaller incomes and therefore Larger financial challenges and need for assistance than couples who Live long together. Health care expenses are the single largest factor causing bankruptcy for all ages, and for seniors, the health insurance supplement coverage premiums combined with out-ofpocket health care costs (physicians, testing/services, prescription drugs) often average more than one third of income. 70% of seniors require outside of family health care/assistance at some point. These facts may be sobering and unpleasant, but awareness of reality can be priceless for motivating us to take proactive simple steps that prevent unecessary future strain and burden for ourselves and loved ones! It ís almost always best not to delay or put off action because you assume “itís too late for helpful solutions”. There is huge advantage and removal of risk to gain by reaching out to trusted local agents/advisors and their known referrals for info and assistance. In the case of life insurance, there is clear and definite need for simplifying the process through getting solid comparison advice from an independent representing multiple carriers (who each have their own separate guidelines on health underwriting) as a true shopper-advocate for the insurance consumer. I hope this interests and prompts you to reach out and assure your family’s financial welfare by contacting your local specialist in the field of need. My area is of course life insurance, but along with others like Jodi Bellam of Better Off at Home, I also provide quality referrals to senior service providers in a variety of service needs. We, like many of them are driven by the joy of enhancing seniors’ lives. In the meantime, I highly encourage you to live fully and enjoy the great activities provided by your Woodie Fite Senior Center! THE VALUE OF EXCERCISE Certainly, by now, most senior citizens know their health and mental abilities are enhanced by exercise. Results of a new study, however, makes a more definitive prediction – older people who do little to no exercise may see a mental decline that puts them 10 years behind those who do at least a modest amount. The study reported in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, points out that exercise has been well established as a way to slow the rate of decline in thinking skills that occurs with aging. The study found, however, that seniors who reported light to no exercise experienced a decline equal to 10 more years of aging as compared to people who reported moderate to intense exercise. “The number of people over the age of 65 in the United States is on the rise, meaning the public health burden of thinking and memory problems will likely grow,” said study author Clinton B. Wright, MD, MS, of the University of Miami in Miami, Fla., and member of the American Academy of Neurology. “Our study showed that for older people, getting regular exercise may be protective, helping them keep their cognitive abilities longer.” For the study, researchers looked at data on 876 people enrolled in the Northern Manhattan Study who were asked how long and how often they exercised during the two weeks prior to that date. An average of seven years later, each person was given tests of memory and thinking skills and a brain MRI, and five years after that they took the memory and thinking tests again. Of the group, 90 percent reported light exercise or no exercise. Light exercise could include activities such as walking and yoga. They were placed in the low activity group. The remaining 10 percent reported moderate to high intensity exercise, which could include activities such as running, aerobics, or calisthenics. They were placed in the high activity group. When looking at people who had no signs of memory and thinking problems at the start of the study, researchers found that those reporting low activity levels showed a greater decline over five years compared to those with high activity levels on tests of how fast they could perform simple tasks and how many words they could remember from a list. The difference was equal to that of 10 years of aging. The difference also remained after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect brain health, such as smoking, alcohol use, high blood pressure and body mass index. “Physical activity is an attractive option to reduce the burden of cognitive impairment in public health because it is low cost and doesn’t interfere with medications,” said Wright. “Our results suggest that moderate to intense exercise may help older people delay aging of the brain, but more research from randomized clinical trials comparing exercise programs to more sedentary activity is needed to confirm these results.” The study was a collaboration between the University of Miami and Columbia University and was supported by the National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
