HELLO
My name is Benjamin Mashford. The following portfolio contains a selected works and insight into the broad spectrum of work I have undertaken throughout my studies and work experiences at various offices around the world in places such as Norway, Sydney, Copenhagen, Ă…rhus, Ghent and Barcelona. My architectural approach is dependent upon creating a form that is program specific but also responsive to site but able to adapt to new and continual evolution of our built environment. My focus is on how we as humans interact, move through and the dialogue we create with the programs of the built environment. Whilst still maintaining a pragmatic approach still allowing the playful and experiemental into the scope. Throughout my studies and life experiences through travels I have obtained and honed a variety of skills sets, which I feel has left me with a better understanding of architecture and its place.

HOCKEY STADIUM
FOOTBALL STADIUM Situated to the North West of Ghent the project was an open competition for the Master plan and development of the Knokke sports club training facilities, club house sports hall and sports grounds. The master plan was to design and create a network of pathways and amenities to link the Football, Hockey grounds and clubhouses with common pubic spaces and open areas. There is also the designing connecting of a new sports hall used for indoor sports such as football, basketball, volleyball and badmington. The goal was to create a sports campus for the club. My role was primarily in the football stadium and clubhouse design and representation of various elements in the whole design.

Awarded first prize the Jabbeke Gementeehuis (Town Hall) is an extension to the current protected Gementee government building. The new extension is to house new meeting areas, reception, terrace, staff canteen, personal office and flexible and active office spaces for the workers. You enter from the existing entry to the building remains as the entrance and maintains a pathway through from existing building to new addition marked by a walkway open to the exterior patio. The organisation of the work spaces and meeting room spaces are along and wrapping the south and south east facades to maximise natural light exposure. The existing building internal plan also changes with the removal of several walls to open up and create new spaces. FORM The form of the roof structure is seen as a re interpretation of the pitched context buildings roofs. The facde is series of evenly spaced vertical lamellas wrap all the facades with accents of solid sections to give shading and privacy for the upper floors. The south facade on both floors a curtain wall system allowing maxmum light into the workspaces. professional

Divers and varied architecture Local plan visual identity forms a town with many types of identities and architectural moods.
Located in the North of Aarhus in close proximity to the Risskov forest the site is a integral element in the newly master planned area of Risskovbrynet. The new neighbourhood is planned to combine diversity in apartment typologies, including terraces houses, and one to three bedroom apartments. The body of the building is gently curved as an interpretation of the local plans intentions to create both – variations and coherency. Facade of the building is composed as gradient made of elements that change tone from light to dark. This gradual colour variation is used to create more subtile constrasts than neighbouring buildings.

The landscape is intended as naturally grown grass and plants in different heights and colours. The approach ensures consistancy and minimal maintenance for the outdoor areas. Courtyard located inbetween the houses is designed as a coherent urban surface which brings buildings together.

The development plan builds on a reading of the multiple identity of Stigsborg as both fjord settlement, (post) industrial area and modern knowledge city. The transformation strategy focus on the revitalization of the existing industrial structures, progressive concepts for land management and urban life growing up of a number of existing social networks. The concept for the new urban area of ´Stigsborg Harbourfront’ can be summarized in three terms: Street Life, Park Life, Fjord Life. The three main strategies for urban life guides the future living qualities of the individual neighborhoods in the district, with attractive urban space as a framework for both the residents’ everyday life and as eventful, public spaces and landscapes for the entire city.

Based in Medellin Colombia the project focuses on adaptive reuse and transformation including other current issues in the regeneration of Medellin. Located in comuna 8 in the hills of Medellin the project centres around reusing an abandoned water reservoir tanks previously serving the comuna with drinking and recycled water. The proposal is to transform these large disused prices of infrastructure into a new community center for the comuna in turn strengthening the regeneration of the comuna and Medellin. MEDELLIN CITY MODEL At local, national and international levels, a lot has been said about Social Urbanism and how it has evolved to consolidate an image of state interventions of what is known today as the Medellin Model. This concept is known for a series of physical interventions of an iconic and monumental nature, such as the Metro and its integrated system of buses, bicycles, tram and cables, “the Integral Urban Projects – PUI, the Library Parks, the green belt, the Articulated Life Units – UVA and the personal
Medellin River Park.” These interventions are oriented towards the concretion of a city model, which responds increasingly to external variables that are to co-inside with the city’s internationalisation. The proposal uses core concepts of adaptation, social regeneration, reuse of existing structure the concept of the project centres around adaptive re-use and social regeneration of a disused/inactive water reservoir site. Four large disused concrete water tanks, inaccessible by the general public as the site is surrounded by a large high fence and disconnected from the 4 bounding streets and is only used by maintenance crew from the utilities company. The four existing tanks would be repurposed to house programs for the community center. The overall program is a community centre and culture house with recreational facilities, and park to complement the nearby Library park and generate new space for community activity in the area. These principles suggest ways in which some of the other sites can be regenerated around the city.

By selecting this specific site I am able to investigate the themes such as adaptive reuse, reprogramming and regeneration of the existing structures in various locations. Programatically the project centres around communal facilities such as workshops, classrooms, communal gardens, a main theatre, that doubles as a cinema an recreational facilities such as a skate park housed in the old square water tank and above sites a 6-side football pitch with a set of basketball hoops at each end. The large water tank houses a theater for local performances and workshops in performing arts. Flexible in program inside the circular form allows for a theater as well as the doubling as a cinema space and can be transformed when required. personal

The project acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Green Square area in Sydney. The project was an international competition to design the first of several public projects in the new Green Square neighbourhood to generate economic growth and add housing to quench the ever growing housing demands in Sydney. The public library was to integrate an urban plaza space to serve as a ‘community room’ for users of the library and the area. The concept developed for the proposal was to create a large surface area for the urban plaza punctured with the main library functions to be submerged below the plaza.

This allows for the large urban plaza to sit on ground level allowing for free moment across the plaza making access to the buildings either side of the plaza as well as creating a public meeting space in a dense urban setting. Simply the urban plaza is to be punctured by the elements of the library such stye entry triangle and the tower and the courtyard. Housed in the entry triangle was a cafe and general seating both indoors and out doors for the cafe and general activities. The tower contains two double hight reading rooms and exhibitions spaces. Above the reading rooms are meeting rooms and music rooms and at level 9 there is a large roof garden terrace and lookout space.

The industrial harbour site holds a legacy as a regional powerhouse and sits next to the old energy plant building that now houses the Ă…rhus film studios and administration. The project proposal was to bean extension of approximately 4400 m2 to sit next to the current Danish state run televisions station Filmbyen. The location of the proposed extension is amongst the old industrial buildings of the harbour and create a hub of culture in close proximity to the new Media library, which has been zoned for the new harbour urban regeneration project. The overarching concept was to create two elements to illustrate the varying scales you find down at the old industrial harbour in Ă…rhus. The larger shell for the industrial oversized scale and the smaller

volumes inside as the residential scales found the south of the site. Inside the shell/frame layer there is the circulation space with allows the user to flow through and circulate and access the individual volumes all the way to the roof terraces. The stacked volumes acting as individual houses the box volumes are connected via a series of bridges and ramp systems. By encasing the stacked volumes the interior spaces and structure becomes protected from the harsh external environment and creates a protected enclosed space to inhabit. Throughout this project we consistently worked with Kasper Nielsen from 3XN and from Lasse Lind from the sustainability arm of GXN which encouraged the exploration of materials and their properties and possible uses.

As we were conducting a studio with a regenerative approach we were encouraged to investigate ‘Design for disassembly’ as a method of sustainability. To address this element I design the outer frame to be designed and constructed using glulam beams and columns cladded with polycarbonate panels to be easily deconstructed and re used.

Located in the Ă˜restad Kanalkvarter in the West of Copenhagen centre ADEPT were commissioned by the property owner to develop a housing scheme for approximately 10,000 m2 along the newly created canal. Working closely with the developer and other parties, we developed the concept to work with equally sized cubes through a number of studies utilising physical modelling to examine various forms and ways to obtain the required number of square meters. The concept developed from 4 stand alone towers to 8 modular cubes with apartments structured around one centralised core.The cubes are then stacked upon each other then each cube is shifted sideways and slightly forward to puncturing the orthogonal facade. The shifting allows for sunlight to reach the inner apartments as well

as create a thoroughfare between the towers. Furthermore it enables each cube to be addressed as its own building and the overall diversity is distinguished by the variations in the facade materials as well as the the window composition on the facade. Along the ground plane the activation and connection occurs throughout the integration of retail spaces. I joined the project at the conceptual phase was underway and contributed to the discussion and concept development of forms and various areas of the proposal. I was able to investigate the various exterior materials and facade design plus research and design of the terraces for each apartment.

The project aims to examine materiality within the context and historical setting. Situated in the centre of Odense Denmark’s third largest city hugging the rail lines. Currently the site sits somewhat lacking urban life and a derelict ground floor space that creates an insecure spaces. The vision is to take the existing historical part of the site and regain the traditional centre through intertwining the traditional and the super modern. The project revolves around the connection between the historical and modern culture of development, and weave Thomas B. Thrigesgade with the context. The project is a series super modern buildings, that partly on the basis of modern tools and technologies, as well on the basis of a conscious rejuvenation of the historical Odense centre will be part of a new vibrant

neighbourhood in the central city.The project celebrates at once the city’s unique history and future potential as a lively and playful minimetropolis for all. The houses or towers contain a variety of apartment sizes and contain a ground floor consisting of retail and urban plaza to activate the ground plane. The scale allows a dialogue to occur between the ground plane plus a somewhat intimate connection between the individual towers themselves. The various mixture of traditional vs modernist materials and building techniques interlaces the old and establishing a more contextual approach. This project allowed me to work with physical modelling of the context and the building in 1:200 detail as well as having creative and material detailing discussions and input at different levels of the project.

The competition Sant Pau hospital undertaken was a collaboration with BAAS Studio to conceptualise and propose a scheme consisting of two parts. The first being the restoration of the interior and exterior structure of the pavilion to the Modernist design of Montaner. The second being the concept design and detail of the museum which was split into a further two parts. The exhibition uses both floors through the placement of a large central room that throughout the main space is divided longitudinally into two parts. The proposed museum aims to take advantage of the natural light that characterises the building, both on the ground floor to the toP. In areas where exposure to request a darkening of the space system or sieve to achieve this.The upper floor is dedicated to the Hospital de Sant

Pau, a commitment by modernity and the ground floor, the figure of the architect Lluis Domenech Montaner, his work and the project of the Hospital de Sant Pau. Visitors may begin the tour by either plans. Each of the rooms that are generated each hand, the explanation of the proposed buildings illustrating sections of the “Hospital de Sant Pau in the city “ and ”the patient in the Hospital of St. Paul“. Back on the other side of the large glass case in this area is a giant mirror placed in the middle of the space, visitors will enjoy the recreation room as it was conceived. The beds are reproduced and folded in the mirror and serve together to showcase, the exhibition display to support the medical and scientific contributions to the Hospital da Santa Creu i Sant Pau.

In 2011 there was a international competition to propose an urban strategy along with a new train station for the area of St Andreu approximately 20 kms to the North of Barcelona. In conjunction with West 8 Urban designers in Amsterdam the proposal was successful. The urban strategy was to link the area towards Barcelona central via and the use of a landscaped pathway containing a large amount of cycle ways and pathways. The section addressed by the studio contains a train station underground, an urban public space on street level and station amenities. The initial proposal included a series of unique pitched structures that took a linear form to signify the train tracks. Each Pitch and support is of different dimensions creating a unique

experience as you move along the platform. Due to cost restrictions and various other political factors the original winning proposal needed extensive editing to re-design in 2013 the project to fit within a new revised strict budget identified by the government in collaboration with ADIF.

The quality makes a reduced willingness to open a connection with the environment green space support. The eminently horizontal, coincident with the tops of the trees in the park interior, is in the centre of the hall a deformation of the cover that lets in natural light from the north. This project allowed me to become exposed first hand to the tough economic environment we have today.

Located at three Spanish cities at the la Caxia Museums in Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona. The project is to celebrate the 25 year animation anniversary for Pixar. The concept remains the same for all three exhibitions although changing plan an detailing slightly to adjust to the various forms of museum spaces. The concept has been to make clear division of elements of films by PIXAR: Histories, Characters, Worlds (see opposite page); within the creative process of each of the movies that are shown. Access to Sala Grande is through a space introduction. From this first filter is accessed the Square Characters. The protagonists of this central sphere sculptures are arranged on raised pedestals, associated with each of the films,

offering a complete and simultaneous vision of the whole. Each of the bases or “tounges“ where the sculptures are located, is understood at first as a presentation on each of the movies. This generates a continuous base surface in the central portion shown as floating, sculptures on media metal crucible. In the zone access, is located between the exposition strategic ideas : the “homage” to its creator, John Laseter and his way of working, the PIXAR PROCESS.

SITUATION PLAN
Holding a large geographical significance the Port of Barcelona and the city the Port Centre sits along at the low end of the axis from Plaça Cataluna down La Rambla to the waterfront. Technically on City port land the structure stands alone surrounded by large public spaces on three sides, on the back side a new proposed bar and restaurant are situated. Symmetrical and linear in form the building was the subject of an international competition to design and construct a new port museum with an addition of a terrace and bar. The competition was to re-establish the area of the “City Port” and its role in the urban fabric and overall significance to Barcelona. The weaving circulation for the exhibition established the way in which you experience the museum.

The exhibition is segmented into four different zones, each area to represent the evolution of the port as well as to show the various elements and history of the port. The elements are Port evolution (A1) where 5 tables are filled with physical models of the port and coastline of Barcelona, illustrating the various evolutions that the port has gone through over some 500 years to the current days. The ornamented archways are filled in with 3 light boxes. The second zone consists of several tables in which displays the port works and plans from books. The walls are adorned with light boxes with back light projection onto acrylic prints and photographs.

The first urban design project I completed entailed lining the NTNU campus to the greater city of Trondheim. The project required responses to the ever-expanding population of the NTNU campus and its affiliates. Therefore a greater physical and mental connection between the campus and city was created throughout the identification and creation of clustering of city and campus themes. Identified is the potential to intertwine the main and largest NTNU Gløshaugen campus with the town centre of Trondheim, and while doing so also create a link to the main marterial road links of several of other affiliates to the campus. The strategy was to create movement hot spots or “nodes”

lining the city connection road Elkdegstta through the development of tram stations allowing access furthermore increasing diversity in the area. These “nodes” were to create links through programming different sections of the street to establish a new urban tissue. Of each node, there is a specific program that links back to the NTNU and the campus.
