how green it is... With so many people trying to “go green”, we knew we had to design a rating system to help you see how many companies, large and small, are trying to make a difference. That’s why we created ‘shades of green’, an easy to read guide that will show you, by leaf count, just how green something really is, or isn’t.

top 10 tips 1. Bring your own bag
eco to go
According to the EPA, Americans throw away about 100 billion plastic bags a year…enough said! Tuck those reusable cloth bags in your purse or car.
tote of the month
2. On that note….bring your own bottle too
100% of Hayden-Harnett’s proceeds from the sale of their ‘Green is Good’ organic tote supports Farm Aid’s efforts to promote local, organic and sustainable farming through education. $27, www.haydenharnett.com
Our disposable society tosses away 8 out of every 10 plastic water bottles, which eventually wind up in landfills or littering the landscape.(wikianswers.com)
3. Consider Composting
It helps reduce the amount of unnecessary, biodegradable waste in landfills. Check out www.epa.gov for more info.
4. Plant your own produce
Besides the obvious (you get to pick and eat your own yummy fruit and veggies), it’s the perfect stress reliever and a great way to reconnect with nature.
5. D.I.Y
Get resourceful and make your own natural cleaners. Look no further than your cupboard & you’ll have all the ingredients you need. For the perfect non-toxic cleaner, mix equal parts white vinegar and water. For more info check out www.vinegartips.com
6. Buy recycled products
Printer paper, post-its and paper towels. …there are sooo many options for everyday necessities & supplies. To stop receiving junk mail and unwanted catalogs, check out www.DoNotMail.org
8. Go paper less
With your bills. You get three benefits here: a tidier home, safer transactions and the reduction of waste and energy.
9. Try Vintage
Whether it’s clothing, costume jewelry, or handbags, vintage is classically cool, made better and always chic.
10.Take the stairs
Save energy and get in shape while you’re doing it!
Take a ride(on a bike that is). Try biking to work instead of driving.

BOHO BOOKMARK
green chic
Author Christie Matheson gives you the girly guide to saving the earth in style. Unlike other books on the subject, it’s not about buying your way to being green – or just appearing green - it’s about truly shifting your mindset, changing your attitude, and developing a personal style that is greenified. More than just a checklist of rules and how-tos, ‘Green Chic’ provides thoughtful explanations as to why each decision and action makes a difference. This book helps you understand the big picture about saving the planet, yet keeps things lighthearted and fun to read. $12.95 US, Amazon.com

green & {glam} on the catwalk
(text by kay waters)
From Yves Saint Laurent to Marni to Michael Kors, fashion’s biggest influencers are greening the runways.
marni worn by suvi for earth pledge future fashion 2008
40
Only one show during MercedesBenz FashionWeek in New York City boasted so many A-list designers together on one runway, 29 in all. That star-studded show was FutureFashion, a couture show created entirely with sustainable materials. “FutureFashion is about what can happen when you get these sustainable materials in the hands of top designers. The results were easy to wear apparel that can be part of the solution to minimize our own carbon footprint,” says Leslie Hoffman, executive director of Earth Pledge, the New York City group presenting the FutureFashion show. “People tend to think of green fashion as having that crunchy granola look. The FutureFashion show proved you can do this without sacrificing style.” Indeed, the looks presented in the FutureFashion show would have fit in the regular runway shows during NewYork¹s Fashion Week. And that was the point, Hoffman says. Materials such as hemp blended with silk, organic and recycled cashmeres and wools, and bamboo were used for many of the FutureFashion collections. And it’s not just a New York fashion story. The greening of the catwalk is happening everywhere. In Los Angeles, The Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show has become a staple of Fashion Week there. And Portland Fashion Week in Oregon is entirely green,
from its designers to the hair styling products on the models. Even the food and wine served backstage in Portland was organic. “People like to think that this is a new trend, but it really isn’t. Sustainable fashion has been around for decades but now it’s becoming more mainstream,” says Mikey Koffman, owner of Gallery Los Angeles, the public relations and marketing firm that presents the Green Initiative show at LA Fashion Week. For LA Fashion Week, Koffman’s company presents six designers in a collective show who are selected from a pool of applicants. “We do it to generate awareness of eco-friendly designers who are out there because people need to see the work of these designers,” Koffman says. “You’re starting to find a lot of these brands in stores like Fred Segal, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s.” And, Koffman says, she’s even been contracted to produce a green fashion trade show by one of the major fashion trade groups, a sign that retailers are seriously looking at making green on the catwalk translate to green in their cash registers. Hoffman adds. “We can see the effect beyond our shows. We’ve had numerous designers come to us after working with FutureFashion to source materials for inclusion in their own lines. We’re really in the middle of a green revolution in high fashion.”
