16 A STOVE WITH A COMPACT DESIGN
Applications The Stûv 16 uses a sophisticated combustion technique resulting in extremely high efficiency (official figures are due to be released).
This stove is designed to allow various types of connection in order to : • obtain the air necessary for combustion from outside which avoids disturbing air circulation inside the house, • improve hot air circulation in the room keeping temperature constant, • direct hot air towards adjacent rooms and / or to obtain cool air from them.

Achieving more with less… This is also a stove that can transform an open-fire chimney into a highly-efficient additional heating system or provide an outstanding replacement for an outdated system.
This type of stove is an excellent alternative to a model with retractable doors (page 10) if you intend to make frequent use of it or are looking to spend less. However, it does not work as an open fire.

16 FRAMES AND CLADDING
Various accessories are available to provide the perfect finish for your Stûv 16. Frames are designed to conceal brickwork and to protect your wall against heat and dirt.
Cladding provides the ideal complement to the stove giving it extra presence. It also makes brickwork unnecessary. Thanks to its stylish appearance, it fits in beautifully with any interior. It is covered with a high-resistance finish, which is easy to clean.
The thin frame discreetly conceals the brickwork.

The finishing iron corner allows a decorative “frame” in the material of your choice (here in stone).
The 3-sides frame is adjustable to fit the brickwork. Compact cladding SF12 (cover) allows the Stûv 16 (here 16/78) to be installed like a stove. The base (SF13) houses the fan.

Hearths with a retractable lifting door are designed to be integrated into the building. The glass door slides upwards and is concealed behind the brickwork. The stove works just like an open hearth. With the glass door lowered, it operates with an excellent heat output in complete safety ; its exceptionally large glass door provides a perfect view of the fire.

How it works
Efficiency and performance
The Stûv 21 makes use of a simple law of physics : natural combustion : air circulates in a double wall (1) around the hearth, heats up and escapes through purposebuilt vents (2). One can also route some of that hot air to an adjacent room. So there is no fan, no noise, no risk of a breakdown, no electrical connection. The glass door remains clear : the air required for combustion sweeps the inner face (3) and prevents soot from making it dirty.
All of the Stûv 21 models achieved excellent results in tests carried out according to European standards. For further details see page 39.
When the stove is opened, there can be slight brushing of the floor if it is set deeply enough into the base.

21 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE A STÛV 21
Partial raising of the glass-door The Stûv 21 is designed to work with the glass door closed or with the door in the intermediate position. The intermediate position aims to provide an open fire limiting the risk of backdraughts. In this position, the bottom runner does not block your view of the fire.
Integration into a low volume
Wall-in a heating appliance… ?
Partial raising of the glass door allows the Stûv 21 to be integrated into a low horizontal space.
Maintenance
Everybody knows that mechanical components such as ball bearings, pulleys, runners, cables, especially when subjected to high temperatures, will soon or later require some maintenance or even replacement. Some manufacturers have not provided for easy use of these features. This may result in major inconvenience sooner or later (for example, having to dismantle the chimney if problems occur).
The raising mechanism for the glass door is enclosed in its frame (patented). The door tilts forwards for easy cleaning.
With a Stûv, all mechanical components are accessed in a matter of seconds.
Limiting the travel of the glass door means the hearth height can be reduced by 15 to 25 cm depending on the model, and the stove can then be inserted into a low horizontal volume and thus break away from the traditional vertical shape. It can also be inserted into an old fireplace.

BARBECUE
The barbecues designed for the Stûv 21, Stûv 30 and Stûv 30-in offer a completely different approach to cooking : the food is placed to cook in front of the flames instead of being placed over the embers.

Healthier and faster cooking
Simple use
There is no need to wait for glowing embers : just push embers and flaming logs to the back of the hearth.
The grill is fitted to the burning fire in a matter of seconds (even when in use !).
Food will then be exposed to flames that can never lick it. With adequate monitoring of the fire intensity, one can seal the meat juices or obtain a slower cooking.
Contrary to traditional barbecues, greases and juices do not drip on the embers so there is no blaze-up that carbonises what is cooking.

A stainless steel dripping pan will collect grease and juices, allowing food to be turned over with no dripping in the hearth or on the floor. Smells do not spread throughout the house, they go up the chimney.

DAS FEUER IM MITTELPUNKT
Concept & Forme resulted from the meeting in 1983 of two men with a common passion for beautiful objects : Benoît Lafontaine and Gérard Pitance. Together, they finalised the first wood stove designed by Gérard Pitance, the current Stûv 60. Component manufacture was entrusted to sub-contractors and the two associates, with a light infrastructure, took care of the assembly and installation. Their early days were laborious but encouraging.

Progressively, Concept & Forme acquired production tools and developed new models but also diversifies its activities in other sectors as a consultancy office for various industrial partners. Today, Concept & Formes can boast a state of the art production site with some 110 staff and a yearly production of some 15 000 stoves. They continually develop new concepts of wood stoves. SAFE, ECONOMICAL AND CLEAN STOVES
Stûv has always endeavoured to produce high-performance stoves. Today all models officially conform to European standards (except the Stûv 16 which is currently under assessment). They have been tested in laboratories which use the European standards EN 13229 (inserts) or EN 13240 (stoves). If a stove has been tested, what exactly does that mean for the customer ? It is a safety guarantee for people as well as buildings. Apart from safety, the laboratories also check three other parameters, which are interlinked : efficiency, power and quality of combustion. The efficiency The efficiency indicates the percentage of energy consumed (the wood), which is transformed into heat to warm up your house. Stûv insists upon a minimum efficiency of 70% for insert stoves and 75% for normal stoves (by comparison, a hearth rarely has efficiency of more than 20%).
The combustion of wood releases CO2 (the gas responsible for the greenhouse effect). An efficient stove requires less wood, which saves you money and is better for the environment. The power Power has to be considered when deciding which stove best meets the requirements of the room to be heated. If the stove is not powerful enough, it will be overused and will need replacing more quickly. If a very powerful stove is working at too low a level, combustion will be of poor quality. Combustion quality Without full combustion, pollutants can build up. The laboratories measure the CO content of the smoke. Stûv insists that CO content in smoke does not exceed 0.3%. A tested stove is a guarantee of reliability, economy and eco-friendliness.

The stove comes with a base plate. This plate can be installed directly on the brickwork or on a support table (available as an option) or on the ventilation section (also optional). The plate and casters are fixed to the back of the stove. This greatly facilitates installation and maintenance when the stove is built-in.

Installation
Warm air
The Stûv 21 has been designed to insert into the masonry. We recommend to interrupt the chimney duct at ceiling level, and connect the stove with a prime-quality stainless steel flue, rigid if possible. Then warm air blowing ducts are installed and the chimney mantel is built around the fireplace. Two walls can be built on either side of the fireplace, so that only the front part needs to be closed.
Depending on the model, up to eight duct openings, 145 mm in diameter, distribute hot air. At least two should be connected. They can be used to supply neighbouring rooms. If the heat ducts are long, it is a good idea to boost the effects of natural convection using a fan system. You can chose the position of the warm air outlet ducts : on top, at the back, or at the side.

CHOOSING THE BEST STÛV FOR YOUR HOME
Choose the stove which best meets the requirements of the room to be heated Opt for the stove which will be lit as often as possible.

This way the stove will turn most of the energy produced by combustion into heat. When it is used too little, its efficiency is reduced, there is not full combustion and waste starts to build up in the chimney. If you choose a stove that is too powerful, it will operate too frequently at too low a level, which is inefficient. An undersized stove will not be able to properly heat a cold room (and even less able to reheat it).
How do you work out the power needed ? Various factors have to be taken into account :
whether it provides additional heating in a house which already has central heating. These various factors do not make it easy to carry out a simple calculation. The best way to make sure you get the stove that is best for you is to consult your supplier. He or she will be able to take account of your requirements on site. Explain how you intend to use your stove and he/she will be able to advise you in your choice.
And the chimney ? The chimney − or its draught to be more precise – is the most important factor in ensuring your stove works well. The smoke produced by the combustion of the wood – very hot and therefore very light – has a natural propensity to rise. The flue must allow it to disperse.

And what is needed to create this draught ?

Your supplier will have the answer. Trust in his or her experience and ability to advise you in choosing your stove
• a chimney that is as vertical and straight as possible, • a smooth surface that does not prevent the dispersal of smoke, • a constant size in diameter − preferably round rather than square – and never less than the diameter of the stove’s smoke outlet, • a thermically insulated flue : if the smoke cools down it loses its upward momentum, which may result in condensation. Flues which cross parts of the building that are not heated (attics) or flues installed outside must be insulated, • a chimney that has a good cover, which ensures a constant draught regardless of the direction and speed of the wind.

What makes a good chimney ? It must create a sufficient but not excessive draught for the stove to which it is connected.

Your Stûv needs air. Several cubic metres of air an hour are needed to burn 1 kg of wood. In older houses, air gets in under the doors and frames. In modern houses, which are much more airtight, an air flow is required from outside. This should be as close as possible to the stove. Other systems that require a lot of air – such as a cooker or mechanically controlled ventilation – must also be taken into account. These could prevent the stove from working with the risk of the fire going out or backdraughts of smoke into the house. Point these factors out to your supplier when choosing your stove. He or she will help you choose the right solution.

Which wood should you choose ?
Unsuitable
Different sorts of wood have different heat capacities and do not burn in the same way. Generally speaking you should opt for hard wood such as oak, beech, ash, hornbeam or fruit trees. They produce lovely flames and a lot of embers which will glow for a long time.
Wood that has been treated with chemicals, railway sleepers or chipboard and which quickly dirty the appliance and soot up the flue while producing toxic fumes.

Whatever the wood chosen it should be really dry. Damp wood heats a great deal less and a great part of the energy is used to evaporate the water it contains. The sapwood – as the soft wood just beneath the bark is called – can contain up to 75% of water. Furthermore, moist wood releases a lot of smoke and not many flames and it causes the fireplace, its window and the flue to get dirty and soot up. Big logs should be split for the wood to dry better. Wood should be covered or sheltered from the rain, but well ventilated. Generally speaking you should allow two years for the wood to dry properly. You will soon learn to estimate the dryness of logs by weighing them in your hand. The dryer they are the lighter they will feel, and they will produce a clearer sound when you knock two together.
Hornbeam (Pic.3), cherry wood (Pic.4), fruit trees Excellent fuels but scarce. These are hard woods providing nice flames, harmonious, quiet and give nice embers. Ideal for a barbecue or a slow-burning fire.
Beech & ash (Pic.1) Firewood to be recommended : they dry quickly and are readily available. They should be stored under shelter as soon as they have been cut and split otherwise they rot very quickly and lose their heat capacity. They are easy to ignite, provide dynamic fires and rather bright flames. Oak (Pic.2) An excellent fuel but – contrary to other wood – must remain unsheltered for two years so that rain can wash away the tannins it contains. Then it should be stored under shelter for another two years or so before being suitable for burning. There is a significant proportion of sapwood (which burns too quickly) in small branches. Oak burns slowly, provides a quiet fire and gives nice embers. It is ideal for a barbecue and for a slow-burning fire.
Birch (Pic. 5), lime, chestnut, poplar, robinia, acacia These are broad-leaved trees producing soft wood. They provide nice but lively flames and few embers. Wood burns fast and will be used to light or rekindle the fire. Warning: Poplar produces abundant and volatile embers. Robinia and acacia can cause important ember projections. Conifers They produce a lot of heat but burn quickly; they sputter embers and the resin they contain foul up the flue. They should be avoided.
A fireplace with a capacity of 11 kW burns about 3 kg of dry wood per hour.
