WATERWORLD A Study of Morphogenesis

SET

WHAT

WAS ONCE LAND IS NOW SEA.

IN A FUTURE RIDDLED WITH NATURAL DISASTER, THIS FOURTH

YEAR STUDIO PROJECT INVESTIGATED THE EVOLUTION OF FORM IN RESPONSE TO EXTERNAL FACTORS.

MY

PROJECT EXAMINED THE

DESIGN OF OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION VESSELS, UTILIZING FUTURISTIC STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS, EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS, AND INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES.

The genealogy of the vessel starts with a simple unit. This cube is mirrored in two directions.

The corners of the cube are pulled towards each other and fuse, creating a cohesive species.

The species is evolves to the parameter of modularity. The new entity is mirrored again in two directions. By aggregating the species, a new form emerges.

Water is introduced into the environment. The outer nodules of the three species are fused together, creating a hull.

Harsh ocean conditions impede stability. The massive hull is raised from the water on stilts, lowering the surface area at sea level. Ballast form to control buoyancy.

Mobility through the water becomes the final parameter. The species adopts a swath system.

EFFLORESCENCE

A CANOPY OF TANGLED BRANCHES FRAGMENTS PASSING LIGHT, DAPPLING THE CHARRED GROUND. REMINISCE OF THE WOODLAND STILL STAND, BLACKENED TREE TRUNKS ERECT LIKE TELEPHONE POSTS, MONUMENTS OF WHAT WAS. NOW, ONLY THE SOUND OF WIND HAUNTS THIS PLACE, DISCARDED BY THE REST OF THE WORLD. YET, THIS DESOLATE SCENE IS NOT WITHOUT HOPE. LIFE BEGINS TO EMERGE, SWATHES OF GREEN PAINT THE UNDERBRUSH, FROM THE OLD SPROUTS SOMETHING NEW. THIS IS DETROIT. DETROIT CURRENTLY SMOLDERS IN A STATE OF ABANDONMENT. STREETS THROUGH ONCE-THRIVING NEIGHBORHOODS ARE NOW BLIGHTED BY DILAPIDATED HOUSES. MAJOR MANUFACTURING FACILITIES LIKE THE PACKARD PLANT LAY BARREN. THE DISORDER IS BEST CAPTURED BY PHOTOGRAPHER ANDREW MOORE, WHO GAVE US A CHILLING LOOK INTO THE DISCARDED CITY. HIS BEAUTIFUL STILLS SHOW GRAND MANUFACTURING HALLS—THE PLACES THAT BUILT DETROIT—NOW IN RUINS. LIKE THE SCORCHED WOODLAND, THE SITUATION IS DIRE, BUT EMBERS OF HOPE STILL GLOW. SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS ARE SPROUTING FROM THE ASHES TO BEGIN REBUILDING THIS ONCE-GRAND FOREST.

the design of a pavilion and bridge for

MARKET. MY

EASTERN MARKET

IS ONE OF THESE

EFFLORESCENCE SIGNS OF GROWTH. EVERY SATURDAY

AS MANY AS

40,000

PEOPLE FLOCK TO THE SIX-BLOCK PUBLIC MARKET TO SHOP FOR HOMEGROWN FOOD FROM LOCAL VENDORS.

THIS HUB OF ACTIVITY IS REVITALIZING THE AREA, FOSTERING A NEW DETROIT. CURRENTLY THEIR PLAN IS TO ADD MORE VENDORS AND ACTIVITIES, AND RENOVATE EXISTING BUILDINGS. THESE PROPOSALS ALSO INCLUDE CONSTRUCTING A NEW BRIDGE ON THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF THE MARKET, STRETCHING OVER THE FISHER FREEWAY. THIS BRIDGE COMPLETES THE AXIS THROUGH THE MARKET AND LINKS THE SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN STALLS. our design creates a monument that signifies detroit’s current situation and the new hope that eastern market offers. the bridge’s construction is inspired by andrew moore’s PHOTO OF THE ROUGE RIVER COMPLEX ENTITLED “ROLLING HALLS.” REPURPOSING KEY ASSEMBLIES FROM THIS FACILITY ALLOWS FOR A NEW FORM TO EMERGE, BRINGING LIFE TO ABANDONED MATERIALS, FROM A RUSTING FACILITY SEVEN MILES AWAY. THE REUSE OF MATERIAL FORMS A DIALOGUE WITH THE SURROUNDING CITY. OUT OF THE ASHES SPROUTS SOMETHING NEW. THE MARKET IS UNDERGOING A MAJOR EXPANSION.

Rolling Halls by Andrew Moore EFFLORESCENCE THE EXISTING BRIDGE OVER THE FREEWAY PROVIDES A HUB FOR INDEPENDENT VENDORS. ON saturdays, local traders line up along the bridge’s chain-link fencing to sell an array OF ITEMS TO PASSERSBY. THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM PIECE ADDS TO THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF THE MARKET. THE PROPOSED BRIDGE AND PAVILION ARE INTEGRATED TO CREATE MULTIPURPOSE SPACES TO FACILITATE THESE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS. the proposed bridge will mark a significant turning point in detroit’s timeline. it stands to remind us of detroit’s industrial history, and signifies its hopeful future. detroit will ENDURE. MANY OF ITS OLD ICONS WILL BE TORN DOWN OR REPURPOSED, BUT THE CITY—LIKE THE FOREST—WILL RETURN.

GREENWAY PAVILION THE GREENWAY PAVILION IS A THIRD YEAR STUDIO PROJECT THAT EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

NEW

CONSTRUCTION

AND

EXISTING

CONTEXT.

A

DECOMMISSIONED RAIL BRIDGE SETS TO THE SOUTH, DOMINATING THE SURROUNDING SITE.

I

FOCUSED ON CREATING A DIALOGUE

BETWEEN THE INDUSTRIAL ARTIFACT AND PAVILION BY REIMAGING THE bridge’s steel details.

instead

of adding more complexity

TO AN ALREADY SATURATED SITE, THE PAVILION COMPLEMENTS ITS

SURROUNDING CONTEXT BY ITS SIMPLICITY, TRANSPARENCY AND EXPRESSION OF STRUCTURE.

LAKEVIEW CABIN LAKEVIEW CABIN IS A COLLABORATIVE, THIRD YEAR, BUILDING TECHNOLOGY PROJECT. TWO OTHER STUDENTS AND I WORKED TO CREATE A SET OF CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS FOR A SIMPLE CABIN OF OUR DESIGN. MY CONTRIBUTION WAS WORK ON THE SITE AND FLOOR PLAN AS WELL AS THE ELEVATIONS. I ALSO PUT CONSIDERABLE EFFORT towards the model’s construction.

Church of guiding light ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN ORGANIZING A CHURCH IS LIGHT. IN THIS SECOND YEAR STUDIO PROJECT, LIGHT HAS DEEP INFLUENCE ON THE SHAPE OF THE SANCTUARY, CONSTRUCTION OF THE FACADE, AND ARRANGEMENT OF THE SITE. FROM THE PARKING LOT TO THE SANCTUARY, CHURCH OF GUIDING LIGHT IS A SERIOUS of events that symbolize human’s path to salvation.

On the first day of Lent, the sanctuary’s skylight illuminates the path to the cross.

Reflective surfaces allows natural light to enter the lower levels of the structure.

The structure of the church is comprised of monumental laminated arches. This allows for an open sanctuary and detached envelope.
