Dear Parents, I want to begin this letter with congratulations! An Nguyen and Markus Raad have distinguished themselves with their concern for others, their willingness to serve, and their witness to faith in action. They, along with representatives from each of our other Catholic High Schools were honored at a special Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on March 20th. Congratulations as well to all of our undergraduate awardees, especially our Students of the Semester for the fall semester of this year. I also wanted to let you know of an exciting purchase we made for our science department. We have just ordered an “Anatomage Table” for use in all levels of Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Sports Medicine and Exercise classes. This is the most technologically advanced dissection table for anatomy education. These tables are used in many colleges and medical schools, but very few high schools have one. I’m very excited that we will have one this year at Bishop Montgomery. It was my goal this year to purchase this table and have it delivered before the end of the year and I am so happy to tell you that it’s happening! If you click on this link, you can find out more about this amazing piece of equipment. www.bmhs-la.org/anatomage/ The next step is to create a space to house the Table as well as our new DNA lab equipment that we also purchased for the AP Biology and Biology classes. That will happen early this summer. We have also ordered a statue of St. Anthony which will be placed opposite the statue of Father Serra in between the first and second buildings as well as Stations of the Cross which will be installed on the outside wall in the Retreat Center Garden. Let us be grateful when we are able to give, for many do not have that privilege. Let us be grateful for all those who share their gifts, for we are enriched by their giving. And let us be grateful even for our needs, so that we may learn from the generosity of others. On behalf of the Administration, Faculty, and Staff, I want to wish you a Happy Easter. The life of Jesus doesn’t end with the Crucifixion but is fulfilled in the glory of the Resurrection, the greatest celebration of the Church. How blessed are we! I wish you a joyous Easter.

As we celebrate Easter and the promise of new life, I am reminded that our rebirth in Christ, the new life we have through His Resurrection, is the most powerful sign of spring. Our students are always full of life, full of promise, full of love—each of them a sign of the hope that we can all become new in Christ by committing ourselves to our mission to love others as God has loved us— and to love life itself. This simple prayer is one I pray often for all of the many blessings I receive every day here at Bishop Montgomery.

Guidance & Curriculum We ask that you keep our seniors in your prayers as they await their college notifications. They are certainly a competitive group and we are confident that many will be admitted to their first-choice schools. Please be aware that most colleges and universities require students to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) form by May 1 for the school they will attend. Waiting until May 1 is often a prudent decision, as you will likely have an opportunity to attend an admitted student’s reception and are able to more fully analyze offers of financial aid. All students submitted their 2018 – 2019 Course Request sheets for approval on March 21st. The Course Request sheets will be returned to them on April 13th in order to complete the registration process in class during 1st period. Summer school course registration should have been completed prior to the Course Request sheet submission in order to ensure proper placement in the next school year. Advanced Placement exams will take place Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 18. All morning tests will begin at 8:00am and all afternoon tests at 12:00pm. For the specific dates of each exam, please refer to the updated May calendar included in this newsletter. Please note the AP Computer Science exam is on Tuesday, May 15th at 12:00pm. Also, if a student is late for an exam, he/she will not be allowed to sit for the exam and we will not be able to order another exam. AP students will receive further details in April. th

UNIFORMS Please review pages 32-34 of the Parent-Student Handbook with your child to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the uniform policy. Students may leave the house looking one way, but appear differently when they come on campus. There is no change in any policy. Students are constantly reminded: • to properly hem the bottom of his/her pants so that they do not bunch up on top of the shoes. If a parent is worried that the pants will be too short as their son/daughter grows, a temporary stitched hem can still be sewn in and let down as he/she grows. • that pants need to be worn at the natural waist, not drooping at the hips or lower. Some young men have pants drooping so low that their underwear is exposed. Many students are wearing pants that are 4” - 6” bigger in the waist than they should be. The waist needs to be taken in if the pants are large. • that both polo shirts and oxford shirts should be tucked in all the way. Many students leave their shirts untucked and fold them under so that they only appear tucked in. • that the only jackets allowed are Bishop Montgomery jackets. The only acceptable sweatshirts are official BMHS sweatshirts. • Page 17 of the handbook clearly states that the flagrant disregard for the dress code is grounds for a referral or more severe repercussions. The uniform policy is strictly enforced by faculty and administrators. • that a student will be detained in the Attendance Office if the dress code infraction cannot be corrected. The Attendance Office will make an attempt to contact the parent so that the uniform item that is missing will be brought to the student before the student is allowed to return to class (Parent-Student Handbook, page 13).

As we approach spring break, please remember that exaggerated hairstyles and colors are not permitted. Furthermore, boys must have their hair cut above the eyebrows, (mid) ears, and collar. This includes sideburns. Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to attend classes.
With a small number of days left in the school year, there are even less detention days. Detentions take precedence over athletic practices. Arrangements can be made for missing detention due to illnesses, medical appointments, athletic games/meets, and tutoring. Remember that disregard for an assigned detention is cause for a referral and may result in probation (Parent-Student Handbook, page 15). Remember, life is much easier when there is no detention to serve in the first place.
PROM
Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 22, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” All students must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the guest student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a current, picture ID from his or her school. Please remember, you are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

DRESS CODE – PROM 2018
Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.
GENTLEMEN • A tuxedo or suit is required. • Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. • Dress shoes are required. • Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes. LADIES • Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. • The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Hand-

Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Student attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste. Freshmen, as well as guests over the age of twenty (20) are not allowed to attend prom.

Spring brings the 2018-2019 ASB and class officer elections, Spirit Squad tryouts, Spring Spirit Week, Arts Fest and senior activities. It’s a busy time on campus, so please remind your students of these dates and don’t let them pass up these opportunities to get involved!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENST
Bishop Montgomery partnered once again with The Association of Catholic Student Councils to host a Student Leadership Day (TACSC) on Friday, March 16. Almost 200 middle school students from all over the Archdiocese visited our campus and participated in workshops facilitated by Bishop Montgomery students. These presentations encourage middle school students to step forward and lead, practice teamwork, and apply their leadership skills. Students learned about programs that serve underprivileged communities and how to put our Catholic Faith into action.
ASB AND CLASS OFFICER ELECTIONS
Elections for ASB Officers have been held, and elections for class officers will take place March 21 and 22. Newly elected officers will join in regular ASB and class officer meetings once they are elected. Officers are also required to attend the summer leadership training and planning meetings in May and June.
SPIRIT SQUAD 2018-2019
Applications for our Song Team were distributed at informational meetings on March 7, and applications are due by March 26 in order to participate in workshops and tryouts in April. Students can stop by the Activities Office for more information.
SPRING SPIRIT WEEK th
Bishop celebrated Spring Spirit Week the week of March 19 - 23. This week included opportunities to show class and school spirit while spring varsity athletes were recognized. The Battle of the Bands was rescheduled to May due to weather, and the BMHS Chapter of the National Honor Society sponsored a sock drive to donate to St. Margaret’s Center in Lennox. Students enjoyed an extended lunch period on Thursday for Lunchapalooza, which featured performances by student
Bishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved in Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, Feeder School Visits and Shadow Days. Applications will be distributed this spring for the 2018-19 school year. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines.
SENIORS
Specific information regarding senior events, including Senior Luau, Prom, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation, sent home in a detailed letter on March 12. Infromation is also posted on the BMHS website. If you did not receive your letter, please contact the Activities Office in order to receive a copy. Please pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that your student does not miss out on these special senior activities. There are many upcoming activities this spring for all Knights! Please encourage your student(s) to participate in these upcoming events. Their involvement in these activities makes for a great high school experience and wonderful memories for years to come!

GRADUATION 2018 Graduation for the Class of 2018 will be held on Friday, May 25 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Jostens will be on campus in March to distribute graduation announcements. All seniors will receive 10 graduation announcements as part of the senior graduation fee paid through SmartTuition. Seniors who have ordered extra graduation items (announcements, souvenir tassels, etc.) may also pick up those items. All outstanding balances must be paid in full for pick up. Questions? BOYS’ BASKETBALL Senior guard David Singleton ‘18 was named Gatorade State Player of the Year for California. He is the first BMHS boys’ basketball player to receive this honor. SUMMER CONDITIONING Summer athletic conditioning is an excellent opportunity for incoming freshmen to acclimate to BMHS, meet other new student-athletes, and get to know our seasoned ones. Life-long friendships are often sparked and fostered during a student’s first summer on campus. Many of Bishop Montgomery’s sports offer summer conditioning. For information about each sport’s summer conditioning courses and dates, please see the schedule included in this packet. For our fall sports, including football, girls’ volleyball, and co-ed cross country, summer conditioning helps coaches evaluate student-athletes and select their teams. Students who would like to participate in a fall sport are highly encouraged to join us for summer conditioning. Per each program, special arrangements may be made to accommodate limited family vacations.

ONLINE ATHLETIC CLEARANCE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS 1. Visit www.athleticclearance.com 2. View brief tutorial. 3. Register. Register with a valid email username and password. There will be a code provided for you to type in to verify that you are human and not a robot. If this step is skipped, the account will not activate. This email and password will be used each school year for athletic eligibility. 4. Login using the email address and password you used to register. 5. Select New Clearance to begin the process. 6. Choose the School Year in which the student plans to participate (e.g., football in August 2018 will be the 2018-2019 school year). Choose Bishop Montgomery as the school. Choose the Sport. 7. Complete all required fields for the Student Information section. Click “Save” to continue the clearance process. 8. The next step is proof of physical and insurance. This is not mandatory to continue. These items may either be uploaded at this step or a copy may be submitted to the BMHS Athletic Department. Click “Save” once again to continue. 9. Complete required fields for the Medical History section. Click “Save” again. 10. Complete required fields in the Parent/Guardian Information section. Click “Submit” to continue. 11. Complete required fields in the Signature section. Click “Submit” to continue. 12. A Confirmation Message should appear. Before printing, scroll to the bottom of the page and check the box for each sport your student is interested in participating. Electronic signatures will be applied to the additional sports/activities that are selected. Next, check the “I, the parent/guardian of the student…” Before clicking “Submit,” be sure to print this page. Do not click “print friendly page” unless your student is only playing one sport/activity. The confirmation page should show each sport that was selected. Print, sign, and turn this page into the BMHS Athletic Department. Click “Submit.” 13. All of this data will be electronically filed with Bishop Montgomery’s Athletic Department for review. When your student has been “cleared” for participation, you will receive an email notification.

REFLECTION
Happy Easter! In this celebratory season in the Church, there are two quotes upon which to reflect. Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die...John 11:25-26 “A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.” -Mahatma Gandhi During this Easter season, we pray that we find time to rejoice in all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. May we continue to recognize not only the sacrifice Christ made for us, but the everyday sacrifices made by those around us- parents, teachers, children, students. So many do so much. Here in Campus Ministry we are so grateful and appreciative for the sacrifices you make to send your children here. We are blessed with the opportunity to help them grow in their faith journeys.

BMHS KNIGHT MUSIC DEPARTMENT WENT TO JAPAN! On April 2, 2018, 18 students and 9 chaperones went on a fantastic eight-day tour to Tokyo, Kashiwa, Toyota City, Kyoto, and Hiroshima! Here’s what we got to do: • Met and performed with students at Kashiwa School • Visited Hiroshima International Peace Memorial and met “Hibakusha” (A-bomb survivor) • Toured Toyota Automotive & Robotic Factory and Lab • Toured Kyoto Golden Palace, Kabuki Theater, Tsukiji Fish Market, Yasukuni Shrine, Akihabara, and Harajuku • Experienced both guided and small-group tours of Tokyo and Kashiwa • Rode the bullet train, local trains, subways, and busses • Enjoyed our final dinner on a cruise of Tokyo Bay JAZZ NIGHT THURSDAY, APRIL 26 WITH BMHS ARTS FEST Come enjoy great music and desserts at the 4TH annual BMHS Jazz Night in the new BMHS Learning Commons (former library) on Thursday, April 26 from 6:30-8:30pm. Hear our awesome Jazz Band and Jazz Combo, as well as special guests “Zamar,” an excellent professional jazz combo who has supported the BMHS music department for many years! BMHS FAMILY FINANCIAL SURVEY The “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001” provides supplemental educational services to students in public and private schools. The purpose is to provide additional help for children so they can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenging student performance standards that children are expected to meet. Included in your student’s Emergency Packet which will be distributed in May, is a Bishop Montgomery High School Financial Survey. Please take a moment to complete the family survey. All answers are strictly confidential, and it is important that all families participate. Answers to this survey help BMHS continue our participation in Title I supplemental programs, such as subsidizing the cost of technology infrastructure upgrades. Your tax dollars are paying for these programs, completing the survey helps to direct those tax dollars back to BMHS. You will find the 2018/2019 Family Financial Survey in your student’s Emergency packet which will be distributed in May 2018.

NEARING THE FINISH… NEXT MEETING: Monday, April 23 @ 6:30 PM Please join us for our monthly meeting in the Faculty Center located on the east side of campus by the faculty parking lot. Our meeting will include the filling of Senior Candy Jars – one for each graduating senior. Please bring $17.50 worth of individually wrapped candy ($17.50 for one hour of PSI credit, $35.00 for two, etc). Don’t forget to bring your receipt with you! Candy must be individually wrapped, and candy from previous holidays (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc.) cannot be accepted.
