MAY 2018

Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal

Dear Parents, It’s always a surprise when I sit down to write this newsletter and realize that we are already in the month of May. We are close to the end of the 2017-2018 school year and the seniors, as is their custom, are counting down the days to graduation. I pray for all of you in a special way at this time of year, especially our senior parents. These moments of endings and new beginnings are particularly bittersweet for you. Our children grow in age and in grace both with our help and in spite of us. We at once see the child, the young man or woman of today, and the promise of what they will be in the future. Their growth is miraculous, really, and each of them is such a gift. Do keep them and their parents in your prayers. The following are important dates to note in May:

th

June 8, Grades Due, 10:00 am

Thursday, May 3rd, is our May Crowning Mass celebrating our patroness, Our Lady Queen of Angels as well as our seniors’ mothers who will be our guests. This is a very special Mass, our last opportunity as the 2017-2018 school community to join in prayer in the gym before our seniors leave us. I hope many of our seniors’ mothers will be present, but if you cannot attend, know you and your intentions will be in our prayers. Just a reminder that each senior will receive nine graduation tickets. In addition, during each morning during the month of May, I’ll draw two senior names and those seniors will win an additional graduation ticket. I ask you again for prayers for our seniors, the Class of 2018, during their last weeks as students of Bishop Montgomery. We pray that they fully enjoy every graduation event, that they make good decisions, and that they remain safe. I want to remind you that Bishop Montgomery does not support, sponsor or supervise any gatherings, trips, or parties that are not officially listed in the school calendar. For your protection, please note that any parties you host for a group of students at your home encumber you with the liability for the safety of those students at the party and for their safety after they leave your home. There are so many choices for our seniors during these weeks of celebration and we want to do everything we can to support their good decisions and their well-being. Life is fragile (we are so aware of this as adults) but we know that our students don’t always remember this in the excitement of the moment because they are young and feel invincible. They need our love, our support and our reminders! Finally, thank you, parents for your support and for your children. You, the students, the faculty, and the staff—as I have told you so often—are a daily source of joy and thanksgiving in my life. This is my last newsletter and I want you to know that you will be forever in my prayers and in my heart. I offer this prayer for you—one that I pray at the end of every school year—and will continue to pray for you after I am gone—with the hope that you will continue to come to understand and experience the depth of God’s unconditional love for each of you. I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand….how long, how wide, how deep and how high His love really is, and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God Himself. Ephesians 3:17-19 With my prayers and my love,

Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal

GUIDANCE & CURRICULUM

With the school year quickly drawing to a close, we are now preparing for our Senior Awards Ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 24 at 10:00am in the main gym. Students and parents will receive invitations in May. The awards ceremony is by invitation only. AP EXAMS Please note the College Board’s policies, https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/takingtheexam/exam-policies, regarding important test regulations, calculators, cell phones and other electronic communication devices. These items should not be brought into the testing location at all. All cell phones and other items must be turned off and stored in a locker or backpack during testing hours. If a student brings an electronic device to an AP test, it will be securely stored until the end of the exam. Students received a summary of this information in their AP class. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Vigon-Morffi x231 or your student’s guidance counselor.

DETENTIONS

Detentions are to be served on or before the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention is to be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in probation, and detentions take precedence over sports’ practices and extra-curricular activities (Parent-Student Handbook, page 15). Seniors must serve outstanding detentions prior to attending Senior events.

TRIPS

Bishop Montgomery does not sponsor, condone, nor accept responsibility for trips, cruises, excursions not sanctioned by the school. There may be a current trip that may be disguised as a Bishop Montgomery “Senior Trip.” BMHS does organize, sponsor, or chaperone any Senior trip(s). Students who distribute fliers advertising these trips will be reprimanded. (Parent-Student Handbook, page 22)

GRADUATION PARKING

Please refrain from parking at the following establishments on graduation day: Little Company of Mary parking lot across the street, Wendy’s parking lot, and parking lots of the neighboring businesses. Vehicles parked in these parking lots are subject to towing at the owners expense, and owners of those vehicles may be subject to fines by the City of Torrance. Your cooperation is appreciated by the community.

th

PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off

CELLPHONES AND DRIVING

As a reminder, using a cellphone or any hand-held device is prohibited by law while driving. It is also important to remind your student(s) of the importance of paying attention to his or her immediate surroundings when using their cellphone while walking or waiting to be picked up. Students should only use their cellphone when it is safe to do so.

Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234 Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind your student to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

GRADUATION 2018 Graduation for the Class of 2018 will be held on Friday, May 25 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Jostens will be on campus in March to distribute graduation announcements. All seniors will receive 10 graduation announcements as part of the senior graduation fee paid through SmartTuition. Seniors who have ordered extra graduation items (announcements, souvenir tassels, etc.) may also pick up those items. All outstanding balances must be paid in full for pick up. Questions? Please email Dione Dierks at ddierks@bmhs-la.org.

REFLECTION

During these final weeks of the school year, we anticipate the farewell to our senior class as they set out after summer to embark on new adventures in college and, for some, military careers. We are so grateful in campus ministry to have had the opportunity to serve our students this year. As we approach Mothers’ Day in May and Fathers’ Day in June, we continue to ask the Lord to bless our families and help us emulate the models of the Holy Family in our own families.

PRAYERS

As a school community we continue to pray for all of the intentions held by our students, faculty, and parents. We also pray for perseverance and strength for our students to finish the semester strong. We pray as well for peace in our communities, our cities, our homes, and most of all our hearts. Thank you for your continued prayers for all of our students who have attended retreats throughout the year. Our last group of seniors just returned from Kairos, and it was a very peaceful and moving retreat for them.

LITURGY

Students will be celebrating the May Crowning Mothers’ Mass on Thursday, May 3 at 8:00am. Mothers of twelfth grade students are invited to attend. We also look forward to the 7:00pm Baccalaureate Mass at American Martyrs Church on Thursday, May 17 for the graduating class.

All students benefit from this service. To access the collection, students can log in using their BHMS assigned Google account (@ student-bmhs-la.org) and default BMHS assigned Google password.
