237 miles. Your itinerary first starts in Alberta, and continues through Regina, Saskatchewan, to Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba. Traveling east from Regina, enter Riding Mountain through the main gate at the south end of the park.
Riding Mountain is a gateway for endless outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, swimming, and wildlife viewing. You will find plenty of accommodation options to suit your vacation style, along with shopping, dining and easy recreation in the park nearby Wasagaming, the park’s townsite. Another option for a stay is the full-service hotel, Elkhorn Resort, a five-minute drive from Wasagaming and complete with waterslides, a hot tub, separate chalets, riding stables, dining options, mineral pool and spa. DAY 3 RiDing MountAin nAtionAl pARk
Spend some time on beautiful Clear Lake, renting a kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard, or cycle your way to the top of Bald Hill for spectacular views of the Manitoba escarpment. Spot bison and head south from Wasagaming on Highway 10, then follow Road 354 to Lake Audy. Chances are you’ll see other wildlife like black bear, elk, moose, and lynx along the way. Once you’ve had your
fill of outdoor fun, get some retail therapy and roam the town for gifts, goods and Clear Lake merchandise. End your day with a sunset dinner cruise on Clear Lake with a Martese Cruise.
DAY 4 RiDing MountAin nAtionAl pARk Winnipeg
167 miles. Take Highway 19 to exit the park through the historic East Gate, the only surviving original park gate structure and now a historic landmark.
Keep your eyes open for wildlife along the road. Stop for a photo at the gate then follow the road until you meet Highway 5. Head south toward the town of Neepawa to visit farmery Estate Brewery. This local brewery is the first in Canada to grow its own hops, barley, and rye. Take a tour of the brewery and hop yard and enjoy their latest brews before you get back on the road.
Head east on the Yellowhead Highway until you meet the TransCanada Highway. Drive east toward Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city and largest urban centre.
Stay in the historic fort Garry Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre, only a short walk from The forks, or stay downtown at the trendy Alt Hotel across from the Canada Life Centre, home of the Winnipeg Jets and the biggest concert venue in the city.
DAY 5 Winnipeg
Start your day at The forks, where the Assiniboine River meets the Red River and where people have been gathering for thousands of years. Walk along the upper paths and you’ll see stunning public art that celebrates the site’s Indigenous roots. Inside The forks Market you’ll find The Common, the city’s most popular dining hall, with a variety of food vendors along with wine and beer on tap. Enjoy a meal inside the market or on the sunny patio complete with river views. After, head to the nearby Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the only museum in the world dedicated to global human rights issues. Next, head to the Winnipeg Art Gallery to visit its stunning new addition, Qaumajuq.
The architecture was inspired by Canada’s northern landscape and is home to more than 14,000 pieces of Inuit art, which are on display in the visible vault. The first of its kind in the world, Qaumajuq fosters a direct connection to the land, people and culture of the North.
On your second day in Winnipeg, visit Assiniboine Park Zoo. The Journey to Churchill exhibit features an underwater viewing tunnel to watch swimming polar bears and playful seals.
See Arctic fox, caribou, wolves, along with tigers, gibbons, and other exotic animals. Take your littles to the Nature Playground or spend some time in the tranquil Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. Then head to the airport to catch your flight home.
