Region Beach Cleanup On August 15th, I, alongside region 13, attended the Region 13 Beach Cleanup. This event is my absolute favorite event in Key Club and this year did not disappoint. The fun started at the bus as I was singing my heart out alongside other Seals. We arrived at the beach and immediately started our DCM and then we headed into the icebreakers. After winning, I headed to the beach to start the region beach cleanup. I was amazed by the amount of trash that people had left behind under the piers. I think that the area is often neglected and I am glad that we picked up the trash. We found things from broken beer bottles to old t shirts. These harmful items could have seriously injured several aquatic animals lives. For me, it was an effective reminder to not throw trash everywhere because we coexist with these innocent and beautiful creatures. I am glad that when the event ended, I could see the abundance of trash bags that Region 13 worked together to fill up. -Dylan Tran Executive Assistant, Vice President

Cleaning Colima On the first Saturday of every month, the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights hosts Adopt-aHighway, a community service project focused on cleaning roads and highways. Student leadership programs, such as Kiwins and Key Club, gathers people from other divisions and schools. On Saturday, September 5, several students met at 9 in the morning and were separated into different groups of their own selection. My group walked up one side of Colima Road while collecting discarded trash and about 400 cigarette buds. For each individual cigarette bud collected, the supervisor would donate a penny. During our service, a police car drove up behind us and the sheriff thanked us for our work through the car’s intercom speaker. Then, he proceeded to ask us how we felt. Right there on Colima Road, my group performed the “I feel good” chant, and it truly felt amazing.

Although it was a warm day, it felt great and rewarding to help the community by cleaning the streets and overall protecting the environment from harmful substances. I look forward to more of these environmentally beneficial projects because it replenishes not only our surroundings, but also our internal soul and spirit. -Brianna Chang

September DCM Unlike others, this monthly DCM was spectacular because it consisted of a cheer session, fundraiser, and a service event. Before the DCM began, we also played some icebreaker games. I was the chief in the game called Indian Chief, which was pretty fun since everybody had to imitate my movements. After the DCM, we began the spirit session and learned a new cheer from our spirit leaders. In my opinion, we cheered quite loudly and I feel that we have a high chance in obtaining the spirit stick at Fall Rally this year. For the service event, we made dog chew toys for shelter dogs using our spare shirts. I helped my division by teaching others how to braid the shirts into chew toys. It made me really joyful to know that I was helping out dogs in the shelter since my dog was from the shelter as well. During the service event, we also held the E’lemon’ate challenge to help raise awareness and money for the Eliminate Project money by having members eat one-fourth of a lemon and donate just $1.80 to save a mother and her child. At the end, we raised made 72 dog toys and raised $21, saving 11 pairs of a mother and her child. This DCM was packed with spirit, service, and fun, which motivated everyone to be positive and active members of Key Club and the community.

A Final Bark from the News Editor Hello Seals! Congratulations on making it past the first few weeks of school! I hope that all has been smooth and well for you. In time, Club Rush will arrive and that will be your cue to sign up for Key Club! Of course, you can join any time during the year, but being with us at the beginning is the best option. Key Club is a wonderful family consisting of people from different schools, districts, and regions. By being in Key Club at the start, more opportunities arise for people to make lasting memories and contribute so much to the community. It is perfectly understandable if you find social situations uncomfortable; however, it is your motive as a human to keep moving out of your comfort zone and expanding it. Invite your friends to join with you because the more, the merrier! As always, continue to be spectacular members of our society by volunteering, learning valuable knowledge, helping others, and making more friends. There is a whole world out there, waiting for you to come out and live in it. -Brianna Chang Bulletin News Editor
