Editor’s Report

ere we are a quarter of the way through 2018 and we have had a great year so far. One or two little glitches: we lost our General Meeting venue at the Moreton Bay Social Club but we have found a new one with the Geebung RSL Club. There is a rumour around that we may have to find another venue for our committee meetings….my house is looking pretty good at the moment…NOT! The Geebung RSL, two days travel from my place, meets all our needs: no set up costs, close to the bar, good food all - reasonably priced (cheap steaks Thursday nights): boasts a wood fire pizza oven and has Guinness on tap, plenty of parking, line dancing, live entertainment with lifts and wheel chair access …I like it and I hope the other members will to. Good riding in the month of March which were well supported by the usual suspects and a few newbies. Club ride, Coffee Run and Lunch run were well supported and most enjoyable. A small group also checked out Agnes Waters and the township of 1770 as locations for future events. There is a significant amount of enthusiasm and considerable effort being demonstrated by all committee members …there is no pay just the enjoyment in what they do and providing a first class service to the members…. I am starting to fret a bit about the slow take up by members of tickets for the 60th Birthday Gala Dinner. It is a significant event as it not only celebrates our sixtieth year but also commemorate our own Ole Number 1…the man that started it all… Hugh Yorston. See article on page 18. Come along one and all and have a great night…at least it’s in the city limits. I have received some great articles once again and once again from the usual suspects….there must be a number of members out there that live a life less ordinary than most. Let us know. Time I went for a ride…the grocery shopping is calling. You would be amazed at the amount of groceries you can fit into a fully rigged R1200RT.

President’s Report

hat a year has been lined up for club members in the 2018/2019 club year. We have a twelve-month calendar full of great events and exciting 60th Birthday celebration activities to boot. Don’t let the calendar hold you back, there is still plenty of room for long weekends, Back to the Bush rides, lost weekend rides and day rides to all sorts of locations. All you need to do is chat to the Events Coordinator (Anita) and slot your event into the schedule. She will assist with posting up and advertising of the event. We have a really great committee together who are very passionate about getting as much activity of varying types, tastes and lengths together to suit just about everyone. Our aim is to have something on each weekend, so time constrained, child bound, over worked members can find an event they can make it to and enjoy. No excuses now for not getting out and about on your motorcycle. Don’t forget our satellite groups of Warrego Riders and Sunny Coast BMW Riders who also have excellent well run activities throughout the year and welcome with open arms, all members of the club and their families. The 60th Anniversary birthday of the club is 2018, and in honour of that we have a number of special events including our Grand Formal Dinner on June 16. Don’t miss out on this fantastic night of club revelry and special announcements. A page in this journal (page 12…Ed.) will show you how to reserve your seats at the dinner and how to book accommodation if you wish. The Club has been fortunate to obtain the use of the Geebung RSL function rooms for our monthly meetings from April. They are kindly sponsoring the club at no function room cost. They have a full disabled access and a great bistro as well as Pizza bar and a number of beverage outlets including a coffee shop. I would encourage you all to join and support someone supporting us. My thanks to Geebung RSL and to Cindy: for sourcing this venue. The last committee has struggled getting any confirmation of a venue for our National BMW Motorrad Rally that was to be held in late September. Confirmation of the venue is required before any other aspects (sponsorship, catering, accommodation and activities) can be organised. We have therefore had to make the difficult decision to postpone the Rally until early March 2019. The new time frame will allow us to confirm venues etc. and therefore put on a first-class National rally as expected. The committee will be looking for lots of member support and assistance to make this event really special. Please consider helping us with the many aspects that need to be organised. There will be plenty of things to do, so lots of help required. Lastly, thank you to the last committee who has left us in good shape for our 60th year. Many have backed up for another year of selfless volunteering. That in its self is highly commendable, along with being able to add to the enthusiasm of the new members, will ensure a great line up of activities and social cohesion. The Club is a social motorcycling club and is therefore a major source of friendships and social interaction designed around a common love of motorcycles. It is therefore by definition a group of people having fun…. something to remember. I know I have built many lifelong friendships in this club, so it has met its mantra in my thinking. I hope it is doing that also for you.....LETS GET OUT THERE AND RIDE - SAFE TRAVELS

Treasurer’s Report

BMW MCQ Treasurer’s report March 2018

s the new boy on the block I’m getting my head around the club accounts, but, we have a healthy Balance Sheet showing assets of $28,006.55. Some invoices are due from advertisers, and $5k of the Balance Sheet comprises Tools and Spares plus Regalia but we appear to have no outstanding issues to deal with. I have updated the club’s bookkeeping onto Reckon Accounts which keeps it online and the accounting package up to date, since previously we were using a laptop based 2011 package. This also gives 2-3 other club committee members access to ensure probity over managing our accounts. Keep paying your subs, and book now for the 60th Anniversary shindig. That always swells the coffers and keeps any treasurer happy! Regards John Eacott

Committee Reports Events Coords Report

A

t the time of writing this article it was three days past the due date for having submissions to the editor. I had been busy making final arrangements for our April events and had forgotten totally about the article. Reviewing what has already been arranged for this year there is a lot happening. A new location has been found to hold our monthly general meeting, as suggested, the committee have found a venue on the Northside - Geebung RSL at 323 Newman Road, Geebung. It was a difficult task for a number of committee members to inspect the meeting room followed by a meal after which it was deemed a suitable location. There is plenty of parking, the drinks are reasonably priced and the meals are of good quality. Cindy added “the venue is next to the railway station for any members who may lose their licence during the year….” Not sure who she was referring to. April sees another full calendar with the first ride heading out to Palmwoods being led by Greg Gaffney. There are the regular social dinners at the Hamilton Hotel and German Club booked, the coffee morning is heading back to Elixir Coffee at Stafford and the lunch ride is heading down to Flutterbies at Tyalgum. Gary Bennett is organising a camping weekend at Cullendore High Country. Refer to the club webpage or the Facebook event for full details. You will see on page 12; information regarding the 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner being held on Saturday 16 June. Bookings are now being taken so get in early as seats and accommodation are limited. Finally, I would just like to remind everyone who intends to participate in a ride to RSVP on Facebook or if you don’t have on Facebook then let the organiser of the event know that you are attending so that we can ensure we have enough room booked at the lunch table. Happy riding everyone and remember … ride your own ride. Anita Anita Wyndham events@bmwmcq.org.au

e have a big year coming up and I still have a lot to fix up on the website. Our website upgrade was like going from Windows 95 to Windows 10 in one jump! I’m working with an excellent Joomla web developer to sort out bugs and enhance our site. I wish to also update a lot of database details so expect some emails from me requesting information. Please ignore any inappropriate membership renewal notices as this bug may still be happening. Finally, I would ask everyone to CHECK their membership expiry date by going to ‘My Details’ on the website Menu and scroll to the BOTTOM of the page. Unfortunately, the membership expiry date is in American format i.e. mm/dd/yyyy

Secretary’s Report

I

am honoured to be accepted for my first committee role as Secretary for the BMWMCQ 2018. To be honest I nominated because I thought the position was General Secretary, with the absolute powers of a Stalin, but it turns out my almost nine words a minute typing speed got me over the line. In reality I nominated because I consider the BMWMCQ to be a “brand” that everyone must commit to growing and leaving in a better condition every year. I believe that every member is accountable for considering the effect of their actions and what they are posting or saying, particularly not only new members or people thinking about joining but on the “brand” and other members. We were fortunate to join a few years ago when the atmosphere at our first events was incredibly welcoming and have continued to have an absolute ball out on the road and at all the social events ever since. So, it is time for me to step up and contribute, and especially support those members who organise and attend events and lead and make the club excellent fun. I might run some GS rides also. Here are Greg’s minutes, a very tough act to follow:

MARCH GENERAL MEETING and AGM 01/03/2018

Opened: 7.38 pm Minutes: Dave Hepburn seconded Paul Hughes Apologies: George and Maggie, Derek Morwood, Ron Durkin, Mal Cremer, Greg Dunne, Tony Malone, Andrew McLeod, Nick Hese, Mario and Fiona Grossi, Ian and Alison Sayce, Rick Trenaman New Members: Werner Ducke riding a R1200GSA President: A motion was raised at last month’s meeting and a letter was sent in the mail to a member asking them to attend the next general meeting to respond to certain allegations as a response has not been forthcoming. The members would decide on whether the member’s membership would be terminated. The member did not attend however his wife spoke on his behalf. Other members also spoke for and against the motion. A vote was cast with 6 against 20 for the motion and 10 abstained. Vice President: Nil Secretary: Nil Treasurer: Nil Editor: Nil Regalia: Nil Records: Craig reported the current number of financial members is 243. Events: Nil Tools: Nil General Business: Nil

The AGM commenced chaired by Graham Healey

2017 AGM Minutes: AS only three members said they had read the minutes from the 2017 AGM Paul Hughes raised a motion to postpone accepting these minutes until next month. This was seconded by Darryl Gowlett.

Jane Gray read out the Presidents report. All other committee members had a few words to say about their year. John Eacott informed the meeting about current clubs Australia policies relating to club logos. Tony presented the financial accounts. These documents will be submitted to the office of Fair Trading as an accurate record of the year’s operations. A motion to accept the tabled documents was moved by Richard Maher and Seconded by Trent Smyth The chair Graham Healey declared all positions for the new committee vacant and nominations were called for. The following positions were nominated for: President had one nomination of Paul Hughes which was accepted Vice President had one nomination of Richard Maher which was accepted. Secretary one nomination of Duncan Bennett which was accepted. Treasurer had one nomination of John Eacott which was accepted. Records had one nomination of Greg Gaffney which was accepted. Tools had one nomination of Bill Luyten which was accepted. Regalia had one nomination of Cindy Bennett which was accepted. Events had one nomination of Anita Wyndham which was accepted. Editor had one nomination of Dave Hepburn which was accepted. Dealer Liaison had one nomination of Don Grimes which was accepted.

CLUB RIDE - March YANGAN HOTEL ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME err YANGAN – APPARENTLY?

13

APRIL 2018

I needn’t have worried as the old girl felt as smooth as silk underpants. There was a strong gathering at BP Blacksoil despite the weather warnings with 50% chance of rain. The ‘usual suspects’ were there along with some new faces which is always great to see. Among these newbies was Michael John who we had met at an earlier club meeting, Jim Peters on his WA plated RT carrying a bedroll (uumm?) and John Eacott ex Vic Club President and newly appointed Club Treasurer. These were all to play cameo roles in the day’s theatre as it unrolled.

The last time Richard was in Control - rider briefing Blacksoil

T

here’s never a dull moment when (as his T shirt displayed) “I used to be President of the BMWMCQ” Richard Maher has planned the club ride. The March ride following the AGM which saw club life member Richard swap seats back to the Vice President (President of Vice?) role in the club was to be no exception. Richard had driven the course - yes in a car - the day beforehand and posted FB pictures of meandering bovines, water crossings and low cloud cover. Yes it promised to be an interesting ride indeed. Saturday night I was putting the finishing touches to the Gray Ghost following some significant work preparing her for her next overseas trip. Rebuilt suspension, new swingarm bearings and driveshaft universal joints were all in place so it was with a very attentive ear that Jane and I headed up the Ipswich Motorway early Sunday morning listening for any odd noises.

Obeying the road rules in Marburg. The Harley rider gave way to our weight of numbers

Winding Roads of the Fasifern Valley

The route was to involve some country meanderings that would lead us after an hour or so into Boonah for a repast at the bakery and thereafter cross country to ascend the range via Queen Mary Falls to lunch at the Yangan Hotel, 13 King Street Yangan, just in case you got lost. If the reader does not know Yangan, there is only one street and only one Hotel in that street. I have stolen the following description from a motorcycle website that I found deliciously written: “You know those pubs which, when you

see the first time as you round a corner and they are standing proud and beautiful and you go, WOW? This isn’t one of them. It’s squat, wide and unattractive. If it were a teenage girl, it’d be described by friends and family as having, “a lovely personality.”

Yes, our Richard can sure find them. Anyway I digress. Corner marking was to be employed as is normal ride practice and ex ex President Frank volunteered to again play Tail End Frank with Anita holding back with Frank which has also been recent ride practice. Out of the BP and all was well with the world. Richard had strung together a great line of country roads that were devoid of traffic, touched on several small communities in the Lockyer and Fassifern Valleys and filled our lungs with fresh country air and the smell of cut grass.

CLUB RIDE - March YANGAN HOTEL

It would appear that those not attending Church on Sunday morning were charged with mowing the verge as penance.

Filling Church St Boonah with BMW Motorcycles

On time cue we descended into Church Street Boonah where parking was at a premium with the street filled with those heathens who were not in Church or mowing their verge. Craig led the charge into the bakery, the home of the gargantuan sausage rolls that have achieved cult status in the club – you will have to ask Craig the story, as small children may be reading this missive and I do not want to offend. Others adjourned to the café and a good time was had by all. I asked Michael John how he was enjoying his first club ride and he was very happy – he was being taken over great new roads at a pace that was testing but not over stretching his ability and all was good.

Bovines on Hol;iday Lake Moogereah

Then he had to say “the corner marking system works really well”. Nooooooooooo. !!!!!!!!

Fate had been tempted. I was reminded of that story of the person (nationality withheld to protect the Irish) who jumped off the 15 storey building and was heard to remark as he passed the 9th floor on the way down – “so far so good”. The following is my observation of what transpired, after Boonah together with a gathering of comments from others involved. No offence is meant to anyone involved but maybe there are a few lessons to be taken to help improve future rides. Richard began to round up the troops for departure as Craig engaged a local lady driving an old XT Falcon in deep conversation on the joy of old Fords and Frank was well, being Frank. The reason Frank volunteers to be tail rider is that he is somewhat slow to get going, a reputation I am sure Frank nurtures. Frank for reasons only known to Frank, had decided to dispense with the tail rider fluoro vest so was now inconspicuous. John was first corner marker as we left Boonah and got the thumbs up from who he understood to be ‘the last rider’ and then he departed his post. Craig, Anita and Frank did not find a corner marker when they eventually departed Boonah and promptly went the wrong way finding their own way to Queen Mary Falls and Yangan. There was a set of roadwork lights on the Kalbar/Boonah road that further conspired to break up the group with some getting caught on the change of lights. Richard’s bovines were still loitering with intent as we passed Lake Moogerah slowing the pace as we headed towards Mt Alford and the Croftby turn-off. Les & Kelly turned off towards the Cunningham Hwy on an alternative route to Yangan further depleting the group while the rest of us headed onto the Head Road and the first exciting water crossing but not before passing a bloody great tour bus full of Japanese tourists. Had this come all the way down the Head Road? The thought of meeting that behemoth on a steep pinch on the range does not bear thinking about. Bloody idiot comes to mind. Richard stopped the group after the first water crossing as Anita had mentioned to him earlier that she was not confident with the water crossing and the water was running fairly well. Richard displaying all of his Vice Presidential chivalry decided to wait to make sure she was OK. So we waited & waited until the last few corner markers arrived. They had waited at their posts for over 15 minutes and then left. At least Jane got a good shot of Jim’s RT hitting the water. Needless to say we

CLUB RIDE - March YANGAN HOTEL were parked in a telco blackspot so there was no way of contacting Frank. Decimated in number but strong of heart the Vice Pres summoned his remaining troops: Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of the Condamine Rode the tattered remnant. “Forward, the BM Brigade! Charge for the Yangan!” he said. Into the valley of the Condamine Rode the tattered remnant. *

The ride up the mountain had its usual mix of descending 4WD vehicles but to their credit most cars stopped and waited for the line of bikes to pass. The air was cooler than down on the plains and the road a delight. We lost no one on the climb to Queen Mary Falls where behold, there was Frank & Anita. I kept my helmet on so cannot relate the discourse that ensued but Jane managed to snap a picture to record this historic meeting surely rivalling “Dr Livingstone I presume”.

We regrouped at Killarney; before a last charge across the roads of Settlers Way arriving at Yangan just 2 minutes after the 12.30pm time predicted at the mornings ride briefing. Well done Richard.

Craig was already at Yangan, munching on a burger along with Les & Kelly who had made their own way there. Soon after the main group Michael arrived on his own having got separated from the group but still with a wide smile having enjoyed the ride. The GPS had come to the rescue. The service and food at the pub was well up to standard so worth a return visit. Reg had made his way across from Toowoomba to join us for lunch which is always welcomed from any of our Warrego Riders Group. To this point, water crossings notwithstanding, we had not got wet but there was something starting to brew in the skies above. A sizeable contingent banded together for a spirited ride across the Downs then down the MaMa Creek road as rain squalls could be seen coming in from the west. We almost made it to Plainlands before the Heavens opened so Jane and I retreated into the Caltex servo to refuel and don the wets. Twenty km further down the road the rain had passed so another stop was taken to remove the wets before we wasted away in the humidity. The Gray Ghost had clocked up over 400km on what was another great ride day with the club and one that will no doubt be retold around campfires in the years to come as the club starts on its next 60 years. *With apologies to Alfred, Lord Tennyson: The Charge of the Light Brigade.

BMWMCQ ‘S OWN OLDE # 1

Hugh Yorston (#1) 1922-2001

A

fter an impressive stint of 89 operational flights in WWII with the R.A.F., Hugh moved to Australia and stated working for TAA as a Pilot on 1st April 1951 at the age of 29. In 1958 Hugh co-founded the BMWMCCQ with Don Stone. He owned an extensive amount of rural property in Brisbane, which is now known as Carseldine. In 1972 at the age of 50 he sold this land and retired, reputably a millionaire. He bought a house in Aspley where many Club meetings were held in the early years. Hugh owned many motorcycles and cars including a BMW K100RS, BMW R100RS, R50, Ariel Square four 1000cc, Ariel 350cc, BSA Goldstar, MGB roadster, 2x MG Midgets, Triumph TR8 and an E-type Jaguar. In his retirement he travelled extensively between his home in the Orkneys Scotland and Brisbane. He had a run in with the law in Scotland at the age of 73 when double yellow lines were painted on the road which passed by the front of his house (double yellow lines meant you can’t turn over or overtake on these lines). He took offence to this and with a tin of “creosote” and a paintbrush he painted over the lines. It landed him in court where he defended himself; a 150 Pound fine was the outcome. Hugh was a quietly spoken man who did a lot of charity work and it was not uncommon to see him chauffeuring an old girl from the nursing home around in his convertible E-type Jag on a sunny afternoon. Hugh never married; he had a twin sister who was living here in Brisbane. In 2001 just after his death, Richard Maher proposed that an award or event be held in Hugh’s honour. Seventeen years later I think about time this happened. Words by Gary Bennett #509 Source: 2001 09 Journal 1971 01 Journal THE BOOK, Diaries of a Fighter Pilot

Murphy’s Law applied and it fairly bucketed down with rain. A BIG Thank-You: to Merv Bone for riding the Gray Ghost out as I am unable to ride at present following recent shoulder surgery. YOU SEE SOME FUNNY THINGS

ravelling by motorcycle has some big advantages, especially for those with an eye, which most people appear to have as well as a spare. I’m not sure why, but for some reason funny things are far more common when sitting on the bike than they are when in the car, possibly because you can’t be looking at texts or trying to type in addresses in Google Maps while on the bike unless you are a millennial on a Kawasaki Ninja. So, this collection is dedicated to all the funny, weird, politically incorrect, and disturbing things we’ve seen on our trips in the past few years. What usually makes them good is that they aren’t the result of someone trying to be funny, with the odd exception. Firstly: The double-take sights. There have been four of these that I can recall, happening when just cruising along and you take a second to process the ridiculous thing you think you just saw, then you look again…..

The Rare Name, Zimbabwe

The Gross Siphon.

The Black Panther, NSW

The Unashamed Cherry Farm Family, Montana USA

Out in the backblocks of Washington USA, a can of black spray paint is priceless. Secondly: The products. These typically suffer from translation errors, and somehow become disturbing or offensive to any number of minority groups.

Bimbo biscuits in Chile What on earth is the bear on the left doing? Oh that’s right, being a bimbo.

Negro biscuits in Turkey Ok, this was on a bicycle tour but were so politically incorrect they are well qualified to join the group.

Goat production club? When I saw this my first thought was of a group of middle aged blokes at a club bar, and they had some goats……Then I rode on.

Try offering this around at the church fete. Malawi Thirdly: The billboard signs. Malawi is the greatest place on earth for ridiculously funny signs. Don’t pooh on the side of the road Why don’t they just have a squatting person in a red circle with a cross? Using the word defecation immediately loses all but the top 1% of English speakers. Fourthly: Menu items. Fat Cake, very attractive to middle-aged first world people – Botswana Early marriage If I’d waited until later, I would now be Judge Bennett and riding a 2018 1200GSA Rallye.

I ordered the open club sodomite – Kenya

Cultural Society Centre with multiple uses - Argentina.

And my personal favourite of all time, Argentina, just around the corner from the SCUM centre:

The 3 Urine dessert in Egypt

No matter how many hours we spent on this one, we could not figure it out. We are going back just to order it and find out.

And finally: The busineses.

These prove that you should run branding concepts past your public relations team or anyone with a clue.

Judgement day preppers shop – Malawi Really should have gone in to see what was on offer, just in case.

Tour Argentina Paraquay Brazil with Nick

Nick’s Tour of South America Continues

I am very envious of the most wonderful experiences and adventures that Nick is having touringSouth America....Ed

A

fter a couple of wonderful days in Ilhabella (an island getaway I can highly recommend), I caught the ferry back to the mainland for the 300km trip to Caixambu, nothing special there but great bike roads through the mountains towards my next stop at Juiz de Fora. I met Ivan and his wife previously in El Calafate, Argentina and had been extended an invitation to spend a few days on their farm not to waste an opportunity I conducted a major service which turned to major dramas! The amazing thing is Julio in Ilhabella knows Ivan’s brother, whom I have now met and through the same network I have a mechanic going to replace my leaking fork seal in Rio Clara in a weeks’ time. He also has a collection of rare and pristine motorcycles (at least 35 by my count, including about 10 BMWs) It seems everyone in the BMW bike world here knows each other So to complete my Brazilian education we went on a 300km return ride to Petropolis, located in the mountains behind Rio de Janeiro. I was lent a F650 BMW, a bit more modern than I am used too. We had some amazing roads ranging from tollways to tens of km of switchbacks .After our return from our day trip the dramas started with the bike. The bean can, only 5 years old, failed so Ricardo removed one from his bike collection and “lent it” to me. My wife dispatched my spare and its now at the mercy of the postal services. A new Red Centre Ignition will be delivered by my wife when she joins me for the Gallapogos in May. Plans were made to visit a few historic towns in the area, which happened to coincide with Carnival. First stop was Tiradents; an old town with many historical buildings. Of course the town was in party mode, with food and beer stalls, bands and big crowds. After a few hours exploring I hit the road and yes, found a motorcycle museum! The night was spent in Barbacena a small town about 50 km away from a Tiradents. Well, when I arrived I heard party music and naturally had to investigate. Carnival shirt on and camera in hand I joined the fun. Why? The music was LOUD, the crowds intense the atmosphere wild. I jumped into the crowd took lots of photos and made friends .The next day saw me in Ouro Preto another historic town where they say the streets were paved with gold. Must have run out a while ago as they are now paved with potholes! The next night was spent in Mariana, the old state capitol: once again with a beautiful historic centre and full party mode.

A couple more days and 1000 odd km saw me in Rio Claro and Dinamo Motors, a BMW specialist, who had my fork seals. So, an afternoon in the workshop saw me a little poorer but much happier! Brazilian biker hospitality extended to taking me to lunch and Dinner! After the repairs I was keen to get back on the road and with Nearly 900 km to cover to Campo Grande it was an early start. Luckily the weather held out for a while but this is the “WET” season, so I got very wet! Luckily my nights host spoke good English and was happy for me to dry my gear out A well-earned rest day in Campo Grande, then off to The Pantanal. Campo Grande seems to be closed on a Sunday so it was an enforced rest day! An adventurous drive (bike stored for a few days) to the Pantanal, encountering many groups of Capybaras saw us arrive at the Miranda river. We visited the Southern area of the Pantanal, which apparently is quite different to the North and was only 100km from Bolivia, so well into the West of Brazil. We undertook a number of activities at our “eco lodge” ranging from river trips, swimming with the Caymans, horse riding in waist deep water, walks through the swap to 4x 4 trips and we saw Toucans, Macaws and other birds in their native environment. The waters contained Capybaras and Caymans and giant river otters, a great introduction to this amazing place. To round out the tourist experience we moved 300 km to Bonito; which claims to be the eco-tourism capitol of the world. Swimming in spring fed waters teeming with fish was a great experience. A month has gone so quickly in this amazing country, you would need at least 2 and possibly 3 months to see it all. I have had so many wonderful experiences from beach life and farm stay to Carnival to Old historic towns to Pantanal and Iguazu. Don’t feel I missed anything not going to Rio! The most stand-out memory will be the people who have been so kind and accepting. So a quick visit to Itaipua Dam, a huge Hydro scheme providing nearly all of Paraguay and a large portion of Brazil’s electricity. This huge dam complex straddles the Rio Parana near Iguazu Falls and is a joint Brazil / Paraguay project. A quick visit was made to the Brazilian Tri Point (a very touristy and commercial place), where the 3 countries of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet. It’s actually in the middle of the river so Brazil and Argentina have their own tourist monuments! A trip to see the Argentine side of the river was in marked contrast to the Brazilian side. We viewed the falls from the top as opposed to a front on view. Must say I preferred the Brazilian side. Now it’s on to Paraguay and Bolivia. PART TWO PAGE 23

Nick’s Tour of South America Continues PART TWO

ell; day one in Paraguay and things are not looking good. At the border crossing I got in the bike lane and next thing you know I am in Paraguay! No stopping for Customs or Immigration, in fact I had to cross the car lanes to check into Paraguay! Into the office, stamped in, no Customs, No English either, so I went to the transport office next door and they indicated I did not need Customs, hope they are right! So; I am not cleared out of Brazil, nor is the bike. Because it is a Tax free zone and people cross to shop, they expedite transit, no good for people like me, who need the “Full Service”. On to Asuncion, well almost, stopped at Police check Point for “speeding” 20 km back, boy they have good eye sight!

Well the roads are very poor here and the truck traffic heavy so how do you speed? I was singled out to make a contribution to the Police benefit fund. I did point out I was not speeding; but if I would pay a “fine” we could be friends. Polite but firm, I insisted a number of times if you want to fine me, give me the ticket and I will pay at Police HQ. That seemed to convince him I was a nice tourist and I could go: Nick, one Corrupt cops Nil. So onwards and the rain started again, damn. I hate entering a South American city, relying on the unreliable GPS and coping with crazy traffic without knowing where you are going! I found my hostel, which is a haven, so things are looking up! First full day in Asuncion and I believe I have done it again! I went to Customs, despite advice at border and from Locals, not to mention the Internet research. YES you do need a TIP: I have one now otherwise the bike would not be leaving with me as it would be an illegal import!

APRIL 2018

Take advice but NEVER trust anyone, make your own decisions. This is the second instance I have had to do this. I will be very wary at borders from now on! Whilst Paraguay has a population of 7 million and has been independent for over 200 years, the city of Asuncion does not hold much appeal. It seems most people live here and it is crowded and dirty, with Favellas (slums) and tent cities in some of the parks! Definitely a rich / poor divide here, whilst the people are friendly and food cheap, I wonder if I was spoiled by Brazil. Further exploration (read lots of walking) has not endeared the city too me. No photos as I was advised it’s not safe to flash around your IPad, it attracts the wrong sort of interest! Alas Paraguay did not impress me, time to move on.

Crossing back to Argentina was a simple but slow affair, after clearing the border I headed south to Corrientes, on the Parana River. I had intended to stay at Resistencia (named after the native’s resistance to Missionaries) on the other side but accommodation was scarce. It turned out to be a good thing. A nice Air conditioned hostel for 20 a night, beats camping; especially as it rains regularly. The town is quite “Westernised” or so it seems after Paraguay. A Pedestrian mall, parks along the river and a Carrefour! (Hyper Market) Some nice, well maintained old buildings also add to its character. A nice find! The Parana River here is wide and large cargo ships travel up the river to Asuncion to unload. This is the Capitol of the Chaco region, which I am told will be like Western NSW, for the next 700 odd Km till I arrive in Salta. All I know is rain is forecast for the next week. So heavy today cars pulled off the road, yes I got wet! So, as predicted the rains arrived with a vengeance. Crossing the 800 odd km of the Chaco was certainly an experience.

Tour Argentina Paraquay Brazil with Nick

The area is still sub-tropical with mostly cropping and grazing for endless km and not much else. The towns seemed to get poorer the further into the Chaco and the roads deteriorated as well.

When you have to use cash a lot it really adds up!

Salta is a breath of fresh air after Paraguay. Quite a large city, endowed with 2 pedestrian malls and a pleasant town square. Many colonial buildings still survive and the architecture of the churches is amazing. All in all, Salta was well worth the visit to recharge and find my way again. Even managed to change my US$ that no one else wanted at a better rate than the Cambio! (Currency conversion Group)

The weather went from extremely hot to intense rain and strong winds. In fact, a 100 km stretch as in extremely poor condition with many large craters. After a night in Monte Quemado, a remote town that seemed to be closed for Sunday, I finally made it to Salta. After having been out of Argentina for a while I had forgotten about Bank Fees, how does a max withdrawal from the ATM of $130 Australian with a 10% service charge grab you!Â

So off to Cafayate, not really planned, but was told the landscapes are amazing.

Tour Argentina Paraquay Brazil with Nick

APRIL 2018

Followed route 68 south for about 120 km and nothing outstanding, then I arrived at Reserva Natural Provincial Quebrada Del Las Conches. Wow lost for words!

The most amazing landscapes for the next 60 km: through steep valleys, following the river, so many colours and the corners. Luckily I get to do it in the other direction. Many stops were made for photos, hope they turn out Ok.

Cafayate: (not to be confused with Calafete!), a small rural town, nestled in a valley at 1900m in the foothills of the Andes. The town is very focused on fine wines (so I am told) and Tourism. Well despite that I quite like it. I always like to explore new towns on foot to get a real insight in to how the locals experience life. Cafayate is surrounded by tall mountains and it really defines its character, wherever you turn they are there, bet its cold in winter! Life, like any rural town, seems to be lived on the streets (or footpath if you are lucky enough to have one). Dinners are cooked, cars are parked, goods sold and rubbish stacked. Life is really on show, much like SE Asia. Supermarkets are not really “Super” and corner stores selling the basics of life abound.

Just make sure you don’t want to shop between 1 and 4 pm! Mind you with the mid-day heat I am beginning to understand siesta! The main square here is surrounded by cafes and restaurants catering to the tourist, with many levels of accommodation available. My walk really revealed the true character of the town, with buildings ranging from traditional Spanish style to modern “chic”. In my quest to explore local culture, I went out for a stroll in the local Plaza, at 2100 on a Saturday night. Well, the place was alive, adults and children and a wedding service was just starting in the local church! The parade at the end of the wedding was amazing: the whole wedding party, guests included, driving around the square horns tooting, lights flashing and the town applauding, They enjoy life around here! NEW VENUE FOR BMWMCQ GENERAL MEETINGS GEEBUNG RSL CLUB 323 NEWMAN ROAD GEEBUNG MEALS OPEN AT 6.00 PM MEETIN STARTS 7.30 PM

NEXT MEETING : 7.30PM 5 APRIL 2018 Hi Guys It was a tough job but somebody had to do it. As you may or may not be aware we have lost our usual venue which actually folded late last year but we weren’t advised till late February which resulted in our March meeting being held in the Wynnum Community Centre…very nice but sterile ..No food or alcohol. The members of the committee made a concerted effort to find another venue which involved visits to many establishments that may be suitable but most demanded that we pay a $200.00 a night set up cost….notwithstanding that we would be probably become members and purchase a significant amount of food and drink. I was one of 6 club members who checked out the Geebung RSL club and we found it to be exactly what we wanted and NO set up costs…they were happy that we would attend (30-40 members most of who might eat and drink). IT TICKED ALL THE BOXES... • No set up costs, • Close to the bar, • Food good, reasonably priced. • All Staff are very friendly and helpful. • Club fees are $7 per year or $20 for five years.... • Well-appointed with casual cooking i.e. wood fired pizza oven with well stocked bar and • Another bar in the more formal dining area with Guinness ON TAP.... • Plenty of parking, line dancing, • Live entertainment but not too loud. • In fact with twice the number of patrons as the MBSC it is considerably quieter....lift and wheel chair access....... I really like the area even if does take me two days to get there.....Editor.
