Editorial Editor’s Report
T
he year 2018 has died......long live 2019. Well: we say goodbye to what has been a good year for the club with good rides, great social gatherings and the enjoyment of all of all things BMW Motorcycling. A number of our members took the opportunity to visit other countries and we enjoyed following their progress via the magazine and Facebook. This month’s magazine is the precursor to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 7 March 2019 and as such contains the following documentation: the Minutes for the General Meetings held in December and January (pages 11 and 12) and Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held 1 March 2018 (page 13). Also there is other documentation for the AGM which include; BMWMCQ Committee Nomination Form, BMWMCQ Committee Nomination form for printing, Notice of Annual General Meeting of the BMW Motorcycle Club Queensland and Proxy Form. There is a Resolution included, to be voted on by members at the AGM for the offer of Life Membership to a member, Gary Bennett, as described in the Resolution on Page (20). Gary has been an immeasurable asset to me as editor in the provision of great articles and a very knowledgeable authority on the history of the club. Gary works quietly in the back ground and has achieved much in the archiving of, journals, photographs and all things special to the club which would be lost it not for his attention to detail…Thank you Gary. The first few pages after the Committee reports are taken up with all matters pertaining to the Annual general meeting to be held on 7 March 2019 for which I make no apology. Scattered throughout the magazine are a number of photos I took of the South Island New Zealand over the Christmas Break to show members why they should pack up their bikes and go to NZ for some excellent scenery, riding and hospitality and its closer than Europe.

President’s Report
elcome to 2019. The previous year was our sixty year anniversary and the committee has been planning to make 2019 an exciting year of diverse activities. Many dates have been claimed already and advance planning is well underway. The staple diet of monthly events will be still available but we will be increasing the numbers of weekends away camping and the back to the bush runs. Advance parties have been out scouting and the first camping weekend at the clubs popular Cullendore is already booked. Last time this was a fabulous weekend and promises to be so again. We intend to rotate some of our regular monthly events to different locations making it easier for members to attend close to home and also make it more exciting rather than the same old thing every month. We have our first, for 2019, long safari style trip to Central Australia in May. This will be a great trip and anyone who hasn’t ridden in the Red Centre shouldn’t miss it. I lived out there for over 6 years and it is spectacular country with breath taking scenery. The Annual General Meeting is coming up in March and all the usual documents related to that are in this journal and will be on the web site as well. Included in the AGM notice is a resolution for the membership to approve an offer of Life Membership to Gary Bennett. Gary is a fantastic member who puts in huge amounts of work behind the scenes year after year without any fanfare and little public thanks. A brief outline of the reasons for offering Gary Life membership is in the AGM documents. The committee unanimously recommends this award to the members. Our Club General Meetings will be back on our normal schedule on the first Thursday of each month from February. Come along to the Geebung RSL and meet the rest of the members. I had a pretty quiet festive season but some great riding in Northern NSW and Mid Coast. It was huge fun and very relaxing. Last weekend I attended another one of the Sunny Coast Riders events at Cooroy. It was a fantastic night with great friends. Tomorrow I am looking forward to meeting club members up at Killarney pub for lunch. Great lunch and lots of fun ways to get there. So there is a full program coming up for 2019. Kicking off with the very popular Karuah River Rally in February. If you haven’t made this one before, it is epic. Many are going so hook up with them and enjoy the ride. Ride safe and Enjoy Paul

s expected, December and January were suitably quiet on the club financial front. Pending payments to the RFDS were consolidated and $850 donated before Christmas along with sorting out their records; somehow our club had been allocated the BMW Club Queensland number so our previous donations had been allocated as coming from the Car Club! New RFDS collecting plastics (not tins any more) are somewhat large, so they may not make it to club events unless someone attends with a trailer đ&#x;˜‡ Our investment account has been changed to 7 months to give a better return, but as with all things banking it required signatures necessitating interstate shifting of documents. Life wasn’t meant to be easy? John Eacott Treasurer
Why you should really really consider a Riding Tour of New Zealand
S
cattered throughout the magazine are photos of New Zealand taken over the Christmas period December January 2018/19. I have ridden over damn near all the roads in the South Island and most of the North Island but the South is certainly my favourite. New Zealand is about 3.4 hours away, Brisbane to Christchurch, earthquakes permitting. You will find some of the most amazing scenery you could hope to find anywhere in the world and the roads are second to none. One road which Tony Gray and I consider to be one of the best in the world: Queenstown to Glenorchy – 46.1 kilometres of amazing lake costal road. The best part is that it’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg an two pints of blood for a magic 6 week tour, provided you don’t stay in Queenstown which has become a MEGA tourist industry.

From the Pen of Charlie Brown THE FAR BEYOND There is no other feeling which brings contentment, calm and slick bliss. And while I try to share it, it remains as private as a kiss. Machine and man are merging metal and flesh become as one. While the hills and passes are calling on this magic Easter run As I stand upon the hill top adrenaline by my side I wonder can it be captured by other than a good hard ride. On those rides across the river where the Finch Hatton runs clear and the sunlight’s beams were glossing those images I hold so dear. We would cross the sparkling river on our wheeled steeds of the day. Watch the rain forest sway and shiver And the shadows fade away. Tis a memory to be loaded with friends true and fond till Easter returns, the river reforded and we ride into the far beyond. his is my last month of undertaking the Regalia Officer role on the Committee. I encourage anyone thinking about a foray into the club committee to consider the Regalia role, it is easy and fun and you can get quite creative! After a good suggestion by Donna Wiltshire at the January meeting, we are implementing a “book exchange” or club library for those bike books/magazines that you would be happy to pass on to others to enjoy. If you have some books you would like to donate/loan please bring them along to a monthly meeting at Geebung RSL. The photo is of 2 books that Donna and Mark have donated to the cause! JOLLYS LOOKOUT BREAKFAST RIDE 13 JANUARY 2019
t was a Jolly good turnout for Tony Malone’s lookout ride. It was a great ride day. Thanks heaps to Tony and Mark Gilbert (TEC) for a great ride to Cooyar. Thanks to Anita for organisatiing and thanks to all who turned up. Cheers Paul Hughes Thank you Tony for organising a great ride yesterday; Sue and I enjoyed the day despite me having a small issue with my R1200GS going into limp mode 10 times throughout the day. A wee bit frustrating..... Thanks to Paul Hughes for the info suggesting to try the “Dynamic” mode instead of the “Road” mode I’d set as my default. After leaving Cooyar the bike performed well until almost arriving into Woodford where the issue reoccurred. Twice more before arriving back home to Wamuran. I will get in touch with the dealer ASAP and get it checked out. It’s done 14,600 k’s and eight months out of warranty so it will be interesting. We’re looking forward to our next ride with club members. Thanks again. Paul Daniell

SPECIAL RESOLUTION FOR AGM
Resolution to be voted on at The Annual General Meeting 7th March 2019
A
s part of the Annual General Meeting, a resolution has been included for the membership to approve an offer of Life Membership to Gary Bennett. Life Membership is a great privilege and honour for a member to receive. The club has guidelines that set out some conditions that the potential recipient must meet. The Committee has unanimously agreed to put forward Gary’s nomination based on that criteria being met and exceeded. Gary has been a continuous member for over 20 years. He was awarded “Rookie of the year award” and has served as treasurer in 2001-2002. He was previously awarded “Best Organised Ride” award. As treasurer he instigated a 4-point plan to retain membership generated from dealership programs. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Event Coordinator position on the committee. He has been an integral part (of a team of two) in organising two club annual events. The Fridgit Digit and recently the Cane Toad Rally. He has organised formally at least 30 club rides/ events. Importantly, Gary has taken on the very significant role of researching and recording formally the club’s history. He has personally digitised every club journal since they started. 50 years of them, which is a mammoth task. He has also compiled a full list of all members of committee’s in their correct terms of office as well as a complete history of The Presidents of the club from its inception. He is currently working on a photographic history of the club. All of this wonderful and painstakingly put together information is now available for all members (current and in the future) to enjoy on our web site. The extraordinary effort and dedication involved in this cannot be adequately rewarded. Gary has never sought any recognition for his extraordinary efforts. He is truly a lover of BMWMCQ. The committee recommends the offer of Life Membership be offered to Gary and at the AGM we hope it will be ratified by yourselves, the members.

Armistice Ceremony Villers-Bretonneux ARMISTICE CENTENARY SERVICE 11 NOVEMBER 2018 VILLERS-BRETONNEUX NORTHERN FRANCE
T
FEBRUARY 2019

The Centenary of that fateful hour was due to be remembered in proper fashion to recognize the sacrifice of so many who gave up their lives or irrecoverably damaged their bodies during the four years of the First World War. Jane and I had been touring Europe since July on the Gray Ghost and extended our return date in order to visit the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux for the Centenary Commemorations.
The Australian Government organized the ceremony which was a ticketed affair. Attendance was free but required prior application and acceptance for which some 2,000 ultimately attended. This was well short of the 8,000 odd who annually attend the Anzac Day Remembrance Ceremony at Villers-Bretonneux. Admittedly that event is staged at a much more amenable date weather and holiday wise for Australians wishing to visit Western Europe.
he 11th hour of the 11th day of 11th month 1918 was when the guns fell silent on the Western Front signalling an end to the First World War, The Great War, and The War to end all Wars. Unfortunately those optimistic hopes were never realized.
Jane and I had toured the western front sites on the GG back in 2012 and were moved by the vastness of the battle zones, the extent of the cemeteries and the even larger number of those troops with ‘no known grave’.

FEBRUARY 2019
Armistice Ceremony Villers-Bretonneux The climax is a recreation of trench-warfare in an enclosed theatre environment using audio, visual and physical aids. It is really quite confronting and moved many to tears.
The care and reverence with which the Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintain these cemeteries is second to none. For me the western front battle sites were personal having lost three great uncles in France and a fourth succumbing to his injuries after returning to Australia. Two of those who perished have their names inscribed on the walls of the Villers-Bretonneux memorial for their remains were never recovered.
We re-visited the memorials at Pozieres and Bullecourt where my relatives had fallen on a cold and damp Saturday on the eve of the Commemoration Ceremony. This was far removed from our previous summer visit and gave a better insight into what the troops may have endured so many years ago. We then spent a couple of hours at the recently opened Sir John Monash Centre which sits behind and below the line of the Memorial so as not to intrude on the Memorial itself. It is an impressive Architectural structure but its contents are what we came to see. It is a museum but one that combines physical and audio-visual content to best tell the stories of the Australian Troops on the Western Front. It would be a very cold-hearted soul who was not moved by some of the soldiers stories.
Sunday 11 November dawned grey and dark with the promise of rain. It seemed quite appropriate. Access to the site was restricted so all attendees gathered in the village of Villers-Bretonneux and were shuttled by bus to the site. While being excited the general mood was of quiet reflection. The usual security measures were undertaken at the site and then we were greeted and welcomed and took our place in the open seated area.
The band played, the choir sang and the voices of those old diggers, recorded for history before they passed on, were played out on the big screens. And then the rain came and the wind blew through the speaker boxes sounding like far off cannon fire. There were reverent and appropriate speeches from the official representatives of both the Australian and French Governments and then the lone bugler from high above on the memorial played the last post. As wreaths were laid the bugler was replaced by a lone piper who played as the many wreaths were laid.

The service could not be faulted and the organization of the event was first class. We have good cause to criticize Government for their many failures but on this occasion they got it right and made us very proud to be called Australian. If you get a chance to visit the Western Front, especially on a bike, then take the opportunity as it is a very moving experience.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK
H
ands up all those riders (and pillions) who like (as in REALLY ENJOY) riding in a Queensland summer in the middle of the day with the temps about 34c and humidity at saturation levels – um, not many hey? Well fellow riders, read on as there is an alternative that does not involve travel to the northern hemisphere. I am talking about night riding, yes in the dark when the sun has gone down. Most mature and experienced riders in this vast brown land of OZ plan their long trips and day rides to be finished before the sun sets. There are plenty of good reasons for this including tiredness, skippys & other critters on the road, bugs in the teeth and waste of good beer drinking time. If you are a similar vintage to this writer and fondly remember riding in the 70’s and 80’s then chances are you did a lot of night riding way back then. When I was younger I was both asset and time poor so rides to far off places like the Easter Bathurst races, Castrol 6 Hour races at Amaroo Park and multiple rallies involved long days in the saddle, long hours around the campfire and several near death experiences with wildlife. Bloodshot eyes, 1,000km days, lack of sleep, bouncing off kangaroos and a hangover were worn as badges of achievement as proudly as those cheap enamel badges that adorned my jacket and hat. As we age and mature, acquire more toys and have more time available, we tend to replace those youthful pleasures with more acceptable social norms – motels instead of roadside camps, restaurants instead of campfire nosh, 500k days, off the road before dark, in bed by nine and waking up with a clear head. OK there are some who have grown older but aren’t prepared to grow up just yet. Green steam seems to rear its ugly head every now and again as a flashback to youthful times. Now back on subject – there is no reason why we should leave the pleasures of a summer night ride to the youth.

The club had an excellent night ride a couple of years back led by Ian Sayce that took us through the northern outskirts of Brisbane as the sun set. By the time we left Dayboro for the run up Mt Mee darkness had descended. As the light level dropped my senses sharpened and I well remember following the taillight of another 1200GS as it descended quickly and expertly down the twisting ribbon of tar that is Campbell’s Pocket Road. The very capable rider was George Rafanowicz with Maggie happily on the pillion perch. Our destination that night was the Bribie Island Surf Club for dinner and a great night it was. More recently Graham and Liz Healey invited us up for a coffee/ice cream at Mt Cootha on a very pleasant balmy summer night then just after New Year Jane and I rode over Mt Glorious and Mt Cootha late at night – it is an extremely rare delight to ride over Mt Glorious without meeting any other traffic. Mt Cootha is a popular meeting spot for a night bike ride but the numbers are vastly in favour of LAMS bikes and youthful exuberance. Why let the youth have all the fun, get out there and give it a try you won’t be disappointed. The Club has a dusk ride planned for March so why not set that as a goal if you are a bit nervous about heading out into the dark alone.

REFLECTIONS on 60 years - gary bennett
WEAK AS PISS AWARD 1981 - Present
Y
es folks, you read it right, there is an award for members who did something dumb, mean spirited, less than what was expected or just something that has hoisted them into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. It’s a prestigious award, with a lot of fan-fare when being awarded to a member. The Awards started in 1980, but the W.A.P.A was added to the awards sometime soon after. The award is a stainless steel hospital urine bottle and it was originally presented to the lucky recipient at the annual Awards Nights.
In the last 10 years or so, it has been awarded whenever someone deserved it. Some of the previous winners are: Chris Hodges (BM Shop) for declaring to have only travelled 1200km in one year, when he owns a bike shop. Dave Drummond attended the Off Centre Rally and had all his fuel range and reserve quantities worked out to reach each fuel station. Someone he was riding with wasn’t as organised and ran out of fuel. This person then wanted to borrow fuel from David, who said no!
Tony Ward for attending a Club Christmas party wearing Harley Davidson belt buckle and socks. Richard Maher (life member) for travelling to Committee meetings in his car for a full 12 months. Richard has been a multiple winner. Charlie Brown (ex-president) was the Vice President at the time and organised the annual VP ride. It looked like it would rained on the day, so he didn’t turn up. Tony Cuffe (ex-president) flipped his R1100GS out the front of Morgan & Wackers. Tony Malone (life member) is another multiple winner. Craig Brennan for stacking a borrowed motorcycle while his own bike was being repaired after he stacked it.
Its cleaner than a shoey Craig was the last person to receive the award back in 2014/5 and he has had it ever since. He has put it to good use. After getting it sterilised at where he works, he bought it with him when he attending the 2015 & 2018 Cane Toad Rallies, where he used it to drink alcohol from.
