n The Cover... The historic Big Sister Self Saucing Pudding was well documented by Gary Bennett in the May 2018 magazine. Just to recap, this pudding, now encased in clear resin, to protect the public, has been travelling all over Australia with motorcyclists since 1976 and it was fitting that it should take Pride of Place at the Club’s 60th Anniversay. BMWMCQ is the longest functioning BMWMC club in Australia.....apparently...Ed.

Editorial Editor’s Report
he month of June was a very eventful month and was enjoyed by a significant number of BMWMCQ members; we had GS riding, Sealed Road riding, Club rides, coffee mornings, lunch rides, rides just for the hell of it…Warrego Riders and the Sunny Coast Riders put on great events; in fact there were events happening all over the place, including the Airheads Group. Then there was the BMWMCQ 60th Anniversary Dinner held at the Brisbane International Hotel Zillmere and what a great night it was. Fifty plus members turned up in their finest, displaying their love of the club and their fellow members…great stuff. Richard Maher took the photos displayed on his committee page and many others are displayed throughout the magazine. I have to confess there were a couple I didn’t recognise out of their normal bike riding gear and one or two went the extra yards to make it worthwhile. Thank you to all the members and committee who put the evening together it was well worth it. I have reintroduced a special events calendar this month as there are a significant number of extraordinary events related to motorcycles that club members may be interested in. The Extra Ordinary Event calendar is located on page 35 after the BMCMCQ Events Calendar. I also take this opportunity to thank Gary Bennett for his relentless pursuit of all things historic where the BMWMCQ is concerned. His reflections over the last few issues have helped somewhat to the planning and execution of the 60th Anniversary Dinner and this month he has provided us with the history of all the Presidents for the last 60 years. Well done Gary. The list can be found on page 27. There has only been one female president.... in this day and age we will have to do better than that.... Hmmmmm...Ed Ride safe and stay shinny side up.

President’s Report
t has been a busy month. 60th Anniversary dinner, GS-101 ride, lots of social events and some great regional events as well. It is nice to see so many choices for members to partake in different activities. Our relationship with Geebung RSL, is working out very well. Great food and facilities and parking have made the club General Meetings a pleasure. Hope to see a further building of participation it what really is a social night as much as anything else. We have, during the month, received formal approval from BMW Clubs Australia to organise the 2020 BMW Mottarrad Rally (nick-named the Nationals) and also formal approval from the venue in Stanthorpe, where we plan to hold the rally. Planning is underway. If you would like to be part of the process, please let me know. Many hands make light work. The recent GS 101 ride was a great success and great to see friends from Toowoomba joining.inToowoomba is the king of our dirt rides but we are hoping to have more to offer in the Brisbane Ride group as well. Many thanks to Dave Pidcock for welcoming so many riders from Brisbane on their regional rides. The Sunny Coast group is kicking along with some great events and I would encourage all members to get involved here. The 60th Anniversary dinner was a huge success and I believe everyone had a fantastic night. Thank you to everyone in the committees who worked tirelessly to make this a great event. Richard, the photos are, as always, excellent. The pudding got a great outing and raised over $450 for the RFDS. Not bad for one night. Coming up is all the usual stuff in July, including Frank’s led ride to Binna Burra and of course the now famous Fridgit Digit. Who is running the book this year on where the camp site is? It will be a great weekend. August see’s the annual Maggie and George biscuit ride; always a highlight in our year. Hope to catch a lot of you at the bikee table (Glass House Mountains Lookout) with self-catered lunch afterwards at Logan Inlet. The details for the Christmas Party have been released. I would recommend booking accommodation as early as possible. I was fortunate enough to meet mark Morrissey a Saturday ago. What a great set up he has and what a great bloke. Airheads (the bikes not the riders ...lol) are very lucky to have that resource. Of-course he is an Irishman and therefore a perfect gentleman. We have another service day in July at Charlie’s home. Thanks Charlie. As always the tech branch will have all the tools etc available along with as many different opinions on how to do anything as you can hear...lol. Hope to see as many as possible at a full schedule of events. The club is about being with friends enjoying motorcycles. You need to be at the events to do that. Ride Safe

O
h, what a night Late December, back in ‘63 What a very special time for me As I remember, what a night.
(Lyrics from Oh What a Night - The Four Seasons)
Well it was earlier than ’63 and I don’t think it was December but, in any case, it was a great night celebrating the 60 years of the BMW Motorcycle Club Queensland were there was much discussion of many special times had over the years. Everyone looked splendid dressed in their finery with the best dressed prize being award to Charlie Brown who was accompanied by two of his three angels. Well done to Richard Maher who was able to boast that he was wearing the shirt he bought when he joined the club all those years ago – that is something I cannot boast and I only joined a little over two years ago. Onto the activities for July: This month Frank Hills is leading the monthly ride to Beechmont where we will be having lunch at the Lamington Teahouse at Binna Burra - note that the meeting time is the earlier time of 7:30am from The Gap BP service station on Waterworks Road; Bill Luyten and Charlie Brown have organised another service day; the drop in temperature will ensure that there will certainly be some ‘Frigid Digits’ on the camping weekend ‘somewhere in SEQ’. All the details for these and our usual events are up on both the club webpage and Facebook so make sure you check the details of the ride before heading out. If you would like to arrange a ride, send the details to events@bmwmcq.org.au to have them posted into the Club calendar. Happy riding everyone and remember …. Ride your own ride. Anita

n Sunday the 24th I had a beautiful June morning ride to the Barn at Upper Flagstone. I went via Rosewood, Laidley, Forest Hill, Gatton and Grantham. When I was about 30 kms away my GPS lost the plot and had no idea where it was! It wanted me to turn around and go down numerous side roads. No problems I had it pegged. I had reviewed the route on Google maps the night before and intended to turn off Gatton Helidon Road at Flagstone Creek Road and the Barn was exactly 17 Kms down the road. It was all good: I arrived right on 12:00 as planned. This was a good example of don’t fully trust your GPS particularly when riding on country roads as you can be easily led astray. I had a great lunch with about 14 others; then up the hill to Toowoomba, then Esk for the ride home. Cheers Greg

SUNDAY MUDDY SUNDAY
Humble Pie Luncheon, the story of our numerous “reconnoitre” rides through D’Aguilar National Park and the ill-fated thrust into the dark forests of Conondale National Park, is a lesson in the mismatch that can slowly develop between perceived riding adequacy and harsh skill reality over time. So, the only way forward was to expunge any memory of the sequences of stupidity that caused issues, pretend we’d never heard of Conondale National Park, and allow Garmin to run free. Cindy had a day off, I had a day off, so midweek was a good opportunity to re-boot and get back out there while pretending we’d never been out there to start with. A bog-standard SE QLD route was planned via Samford, Dayboro, and Woodford. The excellent Flying Nun Café in Samford was the coffee stop with a fortifying banana bread embedded with pistachios, before moving onto the Mt Mee twisties after Dayboro. Pumping through in a superb technical display of cornering wasn’t allowed by the road works crew, it was a slow putt down the winding bits into Woodford. A quick relief stop at Woodford and the ride became serious: Or did when we’d bypassed Kilcoy and headed north to Jimna, before the cut across east through the Conondale National Park on Sunday Creek Road. The reading is from the Book of Garmin, chapter 3, verse 14; And yea verily, the faithful travellers with 50:50 road/off-road tyres did enter the Dark Forests of Conondale, and Garmin did tempt the travellers, hinting that tracks severely overgrown were the real route to sunlit uplands and the Kenilworth Cheese Shop, but the faithful stayed on actual roads and were not led unto the Valley of Death by Garmin. The road quality on Sunday Creek Road was not terribly concerning to begin with, even with the usual disclaimer road sign of narrow, winding, and dry weather use only. Recent rains hadn’t dried out completely though, remnant puddles and patches of mud with a suspicious tinge that in certain light could be red soon had the post-January crash stress levels peaking. We passed the Sunday Creek Environmental Camp and waved skillfully while up on the pegs to the school children who obviously found us far more interesting than their studies, no T Rex living in the Conondale National Park kids, you’ll have to make do with learning about fungus.
Out for the Sunday Creek ride, on a Wednesday Then suddenly a sign appeared proclaiming a traffic hazard which we assumed, correctly as it turned out, was the thick layer of rutted and slippery-looking mud disappearing out of view down a very steep hill. Learning from the January crashing experience, but not doing anything sensible like turning around, we sat down on the bikes and paddled them slowly down in the ruts, which actually worked well and no “offs” were recorded, although the mirror polish on the boots was destroyed by the mud. A severe case of dry “terror” mouth required a stop at the bottom of the hill to optimise clothing and re-hydrate, before heading off again.
Sunday Muddy Sunday Creek Road
The route continued as a highly variable surface, with muddy and slightly slippery bits interspersed with reasonable gravel, but the scenery made it far more pleasant with thick bush and tall straight trees. We had once been warned about riding Sunday Creek Road on a weekend: Continued on page 25

GS 101 - THE WURST IS YET TO COME !!
GS 101 - THE WURST IS YET TO COME
t is Sunday, 3rd June. 0825 hours. A hush falls over the gathered team in front of the Ripley Service Centre McDonalds. The ride leader, deliberately standing in the exact spot an Ipswich contractor chose to spread the car-park concrete from, starts quietly, covering administrative issues such as corner marking, the fact that Warwick is tail-end Charlie, approximate route and a few warnings about not riding too close before building his motivational speech to a crescendo – this is real. This is GS 101.
Sixteen riders mount up, the makes of bike more variable than the normal club rides – even some club stalwarts have left their usual non-adventure breed behind. But fortunately, the clear majority are BMW; 6 x 1200GS, 3 x 700GS, and both definitely more popular than Murray’s fantastic purple R800GS Dakar or Phil’s 1150GSA. The rest were little-known brands barely worth mentioning – KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha. South is the direction, past a shopping centre in the middle of nothing, with Ripley Road exhibiting the slow spread of Ipswich into the hinterland.
In true GS style in no time at all we were off the Straβe and onto the Gelande, as we should be, and heading onto Undullah Road which is narrow and winding as it heads up on the eastern side of Flinders Peak.
A brief stop to adjust clothing, have a sip of water, and discuss one’s superb riding performance in the cloud of dust generated by those in front, and we were back on for the cruise through the impossibly perfect lawns on turf farms around Allenview. Seamlessly picking John Eacott up on his gorgeous triple black 1200GS at Bromelton, the slog on the Beaudesert – Boonah Road began, fortunately improved by the traffic blocking coffee van turning off at Wyaralong Dam. Numerous efforts had been made previously finding a GS route through this area, to no avail, so it was bitumen all the way to Flavours Café in Boonah.
We arrived just in time to form a queue behind a gross of Harley riders, but Mark of Flavours was very keen to have us so did his utmost to get the coffees and morning calories out as quickly as possible.
GS 101 - THE WURST IS YET TO COME !!
Leaving three riders behind for various reasons, we were only a little late heading off past the
Dugandan Hotel and onto Milford Road. The countryside was already looking good on the bitumen as we joined Cannon Creek Road. A little way in it happily throws off the constricting coat of tar and becomes a
narrow but well-formed gravel road, nice clean wheel tracks and not much loose gravel as long as you stay clear of the edges. Once through Cannon Creek, the road climbs up beside Knapps Peak and the views of

the Scenic Rim open out, requiring a stop to get some group photos with Mt Maroon, Mt Barney and Mt May in the background on a day of perfect SE QLD weather. With time becoming a factor, we pushed along the road which runs along the top of a ridge giving 360° views, or would if the rider didn’t care about crashing. We plummeted down off the heights past a weirdly oblivious woman with a small and randomly moving dog that she didn’t seem to acknowledge as hers, before hitting the Boonah Rathdowney Road. A couple of kilometres on, a short and slightly more technical section beside Maroon Dam was successfully negotiated by all except Charlie as he had to go to work, before popping out onto Burnett Creek Road. About half the group decided that Maroon Dam was worth a look via Carney’s Creek Road, while the official party did bitumen back onto the Boonah Road, then up into Mt Alford via the twisty Dwyers Ridge Road.

GS 101 - THE WURST IS YET TO COME !!
We arrived at the Scenic Rim Brewery precisely on time, just 30 minutes late, however we still beat the vintage convertible car club in which was the main thing. The Brewery was luckily running a German sausage theme menu, and as it had been forever (5 days) since the last German Club evening we were well overdue and happy to be feeling the Wurst for wear.
we often love the dirt, but like singing along to Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart, don’t want to be the only one seen doing it.
The smiles are genuine...its club members having a bloody good time on the gs 101 Ride..Ed
Many thanks to Warwick Hunter for being the “Rock of Gibraltar” TEC on both the reconnoitre ride and the actual ride, and Greg Gaffney for acting in the role of “I haven’t ridden dirt for 40 years because dust looks bad on my black BMW R1200 RT” ride member. The large team that turned up to GS 101 showed that
Dave Pidcock and Bec Fox, Paul H, Charlie B, Phil G, Murray B, Paul and Carolyn, Huw S, Glenn S, John E, Chris L, Nigel and Ashton, Jurgen, and Cindy B, thanks for coming along and making the event an absolute ball, made even better by Tony and Jane and Tony M putting in the effort to meet us for lunch. Dave Whale receives special mention for meeting us at both venues and coming up with the title for the article. See you and other Billy Ray fans on GS 201

SUNDAY MUDDY SUNDAY - Duncan Continued from page 17 due to the 4WD traffic, and the narrow and muddy sections would have been very unpleasant to meet something coming the other way, but as it was a Wednesday we had the entire Conondale National Park and the swarms of T Rexes to ourselves. Here is a link to a Sunday Creek Road video produced, directed, narrated, and cameoed in, by Cindy, which will hopefully give a flavour of our riding on the day and the waffling I tend to do about riding techniques I’ve just made up to calm myself in situations that make me a bit nervous: https://youtu.be/gUluw4hl9oY After about 10km, we saw the opposite end traffic hazard sign, with a collective yet tentative sigh of relief from the riding crowd as surely that meant the muddy and slippery-ish bits were finished. Soon after, we saw the opposite end National Park sign, which meant that we had finally ridden through the heart of the beast without causing laundry issues. A ride: through the Charlie Moreland Camping Ground, with a small wave from a lady in an RV, perfectly capturing the euphoria felt by everyone, experiencing our triumphant appearance from the primordial gloom of the Conondale forests.
Bursting forth from rear end of Conondale National Park To celebrate, we headed into Kenilworth and stopped at the bakery, famous for its 1kg donut which if finished, earns the victor a plate on the wall with their name, a comment, and the time taken to finish the job;

and immediate cancellation of their health and life insurance policies. The slowest time we saw was over 4 hours, the shortest at about 26 minutes.
Kenilworth Bakery employee showing how big the stomach gets after eating the giant donut We had one final dirt ride after our lunch which was a pie, in normal circumstances causing some guilt, but in this case seemingly a health food lunch with only 0.5% of the calorific value of the donut. It was up the Obi Obi Road: then onto the lovely gravel of the Kidaman Creek Road and into Maleny, where the GPS was set to “home, and don’t spare the horses”.

The Transcendental Experience of RIDING
The Transcendental Experience of Riding a Motorcycle
hy ride a motorcycle? The classic reply is “If I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand”, well, I’ll give it a try anyways. Bikers have been at a loss to explain the feeling. It’s the freedom; the speed the adrenalin rush in some parts of the riding, it being part of nature, etc. People still don’t understand. It’s not strutting around in leathers and badges at the cafe or whatever. That’s just optional protocol not covered here, like white clothes of a cricketer, uniform of a sailor or tennis player. The riding of a motorcycle on the open roads is to most a spiritual experience, similar but stronger than flying an unpowered glider, sailing a windsurfer or riding a surfboard, but the touring motorcyclist does it more and longer and with a Mantra. Without radio, talk or telephone it’s meditation. You have the loneliness of just you and your thoughts, hour after hour. Your senses take it all in and what you exercise; is your ability to think! For survival, your senses are also very much heightened noticing everything so much more, like the road, the animals, the scenery, etc. Key muscle groups and reflexes control the bike and you feel the climate, engine and every contour of the road. The gravitational and centrifugal forces work on the body in sudden ups, downs and curves. You smell delights from a bakery, the presence of koalas and cattle and the presence of the odd road kill. The hot bitumen is an orchestra of smells, mostly but not always pleasant. Up on the plateau and on the range, the air is cooler and crisper. When riding through a rainforest your smell and feel the vegetation, the fresh and pungent moist air. You feel and appreciate the differences in wind and temperatures. This constant bombardment of shifting sensory input and the feeling of riding is all part of riding a motorcycle. Finally; what makes it transcendental meditation is the Mantra, the Hummmmm of the engine. All engines sound unique and personal. I have two pairs of identical large bikes of the same year, make and model. I could instantly tell you which one I’m on by the engine, even if you put new mufflers on, but the engine sounds are close. The Hmmmm is like scaffolding for all the rest sensory input, feel and meditation. That’s why the sound of the machine is so important to me. It has to fit me, just like a mantra in transcendental meditation and like a good base in a great music performance at a concert. You get very little of any of this when driving a car. In a car you are isolated from most of these inputs and also distracted by people, technology, the body and bubble environment of the car all destroying any opportunity for meditation. The car is mainly just a means of transport, separating the world out there with climate control, chit chat, radio, car rattle, power steering, excessive dampening and separation of the world out there. When you ride a bike, and you arrive at a destination, transient or daily final, it’s only a break in the experience of riding. It’s a chance to replenish food and drink and the rest, plus a chance to stretch the legs. This is why the destination is not part of the experience. You are often asked at servo stations, “where are you heading”, one day I’ll simply tell them “I don’t know, who cares?” No surprise that I would get none of this if I were to ride to work daily in peak hour traffic, which I never do. Instead we drive to the station. My wife and I pay the $15 each daily for a return trip on the train, with air-conditioning, opportunity to relax or read and for safety. When you’re not on a real ride, it’s far too dangerous and disharmonious to ride a motorcycle, just to save a couple of dollars in fuel. On this current bike alone, I’m not far from clocking over 175,000 kilometre in ten years and 90% of this on soul enriching touring rides and not by fighting it out with road raging peak hour traffic. In a context like this, motorcycle riding is not about travel, it’s a different spiritual and reality dimension. On a ride like described, you can go anywhere. You can leave the planet! Royal and Ann

NICK HESE South America Final Blogg
ell that’s Lima done and dusted! A huge mega city of 10 million souls, 5 nights and what did I think of it? Read on! A quick departure from Nazca and we were heading North again. Travelling between Ica and Pisco, which was very dry and barren most of the way. Along the route there was an 80 km stretch of commercial vineyards seemingly controlled by a few large companies, with access to water .No doubt this is where the grapes for Pisco Sour are grown. Arriving in Pisco the odour of fermenting grape skins pervaded the air! No samples for me…wine and its derivatives are not my thing. I regret to say my initial impression of Pisco has only been reinforced by my walk down through town to the seaside. I was looking forward to seeing the Pacific Ocean again after nearly 7 months, even if from the wrong side!. My walk took me through an uninspiring town centre and past many closed hotels, cafes and restaurants. Even the “Mega Plaza”, whilst offering a number of shops only had one outlet where I could buy coffee!! There is a real air of decay and neglect pervading the town. Arriving at the “beach” things improved slightly; with the council having made a big effort in constructing a walkway and plazas along the beach front. It seems though that maintenance was not considered in the budget and the crowds are just not there. A few families, some fishermen on the derelict wharf and me! There were large numbers of Flamingoes in the shallow pools, so that was a bonus! I see Paracas; a short distance down the coast has a number of “upmarket” accommodations, so perhaps that’s where the tourists are! I will explore that area on my way back South in July, catching things I missed on my way to Columbia. The run up to Lima along the coast was fairly short at 220 km and being a Sunday, light traffic so I arrived by midday. The scenery was quite varied as we stayed quite close to the Ocean. It was nice to see the ocean but the foreshores are another story. Thousands of whitewashed identical cubes clustered behind the beaches for 100 km South of Lima. I don’t know if it’s like Spain and they remain empty but what an eyesore! Further South we had narrow coastal strips with what amounted to subsistence farming with desert encroaching from the West, go North 50 km and the road has the sea one side with steep dunes on the other side, next thing you know we have wide valleys , irrigated and commercial farming! The only consistency is the standard of driving, abominable! Who needs mirrors, when a horn will do? How about 80 km/h in the fast lane for km on end? Motorcycles are pretty low down in the order of things here, so it’s proceeding with caution.
So checking out likely spots to visit I decided to explore a bit, but as have been unable to come to grips with public transport here in Lima I managed to walk into the centre via the market area., certainly a challenge in the heat. The market is a case of if we don’t sell it you don’t need it! Similar products are grouped together to make competition for a sale very tough. The centre as usual is based around the Plaza de Armas, with the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral (a mere 400 years old) and the obligatory pedestrian shopping malls. The architecture is very Spanish colonial and quite impressive. I was asked today what I thought of Peruvian cuisine. To be honest I am not sure what it is! There is a proliferation of “Chifa” restaurants, which is the Peruvian version of Chinese, which seems very popular, or Hamburgesa, Pizza or Western food in the Mall. A new mission for me! Lomo Saltado a dish with stir fried beef and veggies, accompanied by rice and usually chips seems quite popular and on offer at most restaurants. A quick visit to the boys at Touratech Peru who kindly offered to assist when I had bike issues in Nazca. Ivan and the crew were very welcoming and had a very professional set up, with workshop, showroom and bike storage. In fact I met a couple of Portuguese BMW riders, picking up their bikes from storage. The ride back down the Pan American Hwy was an “adventure’ that even puts Russian drivers to shame. My last couple of days were spent exploring the older and more interesting parts of town. I have to say my impressions of Lima have improved as there are many parks and beautiful maintained colonial style buildings. Of course the 17century churches are striking in their decoration, but so many? One thing that is common in Sth America is the long line outside the bank. Every country is the same? Security also, everything is behind a high fence and even the Chinese restaurant and Mc Donald’s have security guards. So is Lima a place I would recommend?, sadly not. Whilst it gets easier there is no great attraction to entice you to linger.
