Editorial Editor’s Report
C
hristmas draws ever closer as does the end of the year of 2018: and if the month of August is anything to go by the next months will be well full of activities and very busy indeed. The 5th of August saw another very well organised, successful and very well patronised Maggie and George’ Annual BMWMCQ Biscuit Run: this year terminating at the Glass House Mountains Look Out. A big thank you to: President Paul Hughes for leading the rides from Carseldine Road House and Frank Hills as TEC. August also saw a number of members travelling overseas and interstate in both directions. Sebastian freelancing his way through Norway and other freezing bloody Artic Countries, with Steve and Rosi were off to Austria for a few months along with Tony and Jane visiting the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man. John Eacott spent far too much time in Victoria, not by design but rather BMW engineering issues, Cindy and Duncan visited places south of the border. A number of us were very lucky in that we took up the challenge that Richard and Wendy threw down in the Winter in the Outback Tour and I really did enjoy myself and the company immensely. We had it all… Freezing temperatures at night: but pleasantly warm days with two days of rain some very heavy but most not so. I found the country folk to be pleased to see us and very friendly and helpful. The rain would make no major inroads to the drought conditions but it was a very welcome novelty. One of the saddest aspects of the tour was the road kill… I estimated that if we averaged out the entire road kill we passed over 2100 Km it would be 1 animal every 50 meters….that is a lot of wasted fauna cause it just wasn’t roos but pigs, wallabies, possums and various furry critters I couldn’t identify. Just a quick reminder for events of note in the coming months: The Christmas Function at Tin Can Bay now has an RSVP date which has been added to the Poster on page 14 and the BMW National Motorrad Rally 2018 at Wallerawang. President’s Report
e had sad news in August. Paul Fardouly, a member from Taree, was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident on the Mid North Coast. Paul and his wife Leanne were well known to many members and had participated in quite a few long weekends and back to the bush events. Paul will be very sadly missed. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Leanne and her family. A few members managed to make Paul’s memorial service and by all reports it was a great reflection on Paul’s life. I have had a tour during the month out west. Five nights with good mates, out through Roma, Mitchell, Charleville, Cunnamulla, St George, Thallon, Nindigully and Dalby. Very well organised by, Richard and Wendy De Groote: About 2100 kms of a great trip. We had one day of reasonable rain, which made the locals very happy around St George. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. Very sad to see how dry it was out west and the incredible amounts of road kill. I don’t think I have seen it quite that bad before. Speaking of Nindigully, the Cane Toad Rally (40th rendition) is on in the last weekend of September at this locale. It’s a Great pub, really good company and heaps of fun. You are all invited. Details are on our Facebook site. The BMW Motorrad National Rally is on the same weekend in Wallerawang NSW (near Lithgow). A few members are going and I would encourage more to follow. Details are on Facebook and the web. In September on Saturday the 22nd Anita has organised a “think tank” on the 2020 National rally we are organising. If you have good ideas etc, please come along and share them. It doesn’t mean you need to serve on a committee etc, just share your ideas. It should only go for about 90 minutes, then we might wander off somewhere for brunch. The Christmas Party is on Facebook and needs you to sign up and process your payments so logistics can be handled. Please, if you’re coming, get this all done ASAP, to allow us to make this the fabulous event it has become over the last few years. The biscuit run in August was once again a huge success and many thanks must go to Maggie and George who hold this annual event. They are just wonderful people who love the club and we love them back. Can’t wait for next year, which will be closer to their new home base. The airheads section of the journal has some fascinating videos from Mark Morrissey. If you’re an airhead (owner …lol) please help this section along by submitting photos and articles relating to your passion. There are lots of activities going on. The Cane Toad Rally being re-invented and it is an exciting thing for the club. This is another annual event that is usually very well attended. See if you can make it. Ride safe Paul

i Readers Motorcycle activities have been taking second position at the moment due to elderly parent duties. You will be glad to know that there is another lodger in the garage this week. An R 1150 GSA has found itself a home at the back of the garage. The plans for this motorcycle will become clear in the next week or so when the owner and I sort out exactly what we will do with it. The remainder of the BMW’s in the gar3age are not causing anyone any grief except the dog who seems to be struggling for space. There may be some bike parts on her bed. My relationship with the guys at Moorooka Yamaha is coming along nicely. The only bike refusing to cooperate with the attention given to it in the last few weeks is the XS 400 yammie. Andy McLeod and I have been reducing the wine stocks trying to figure out why it won’t kick or electric start despite large amounts of money being spent in this area. After consulting Dr Google and pulling the engine casings off we discovered there is a correct process to replacing the starter motor in a Jap bike and the wine didn’t allow us to find it on the first attempt. Actually it was more like the fourth attempt with some swearing included. Now that this problem has been sorted, I can prepare a bike for the upcoming Sunday ride and join you all for the days ride. Oh and one last thing, I know a guy who knows a guy who has a 2011 R1200GS Triple Black for sale. It’s never been stored, ridden or worked on by me so it comes highly recommended. here are always plenty of members who promptly pay their annual membership subscription, which helps keep the club coffers in a healthy state. Many of you pay via PayPal which is a convenient way; but remember that the club has to pay a fee of 3% or more on those PayPal transactions. Could you consider paying with a direct deposit, not forgetting to identify yourself within the payment advice, and thus get the money to us both quicker and without a cost to our club? We’re getting more members paying for the December Christmas dinner at Tin Can Bay, if you haven’t got in yet then a nudge to do so. I’ve been MIA for most of the past four weeks, culminating in 3,500km in a week including riding herd on a 4 Day cycling event down the south coast of South Australia and Victoria. Wind and rain, hail and gales, down to -2C riding back through NSW, character building but it’s good to be home and back in some degree of warmth! Club bank accounts are currently standing at $19,951.34 having paid the annual insurance premiums to see us through the next 12 months: always a hefty club cost, plus a few minor bills. elcome to a new month. I hope you all managed to get through August without catching the EKKA flu. This month there are a few changes to our usual events. The coffee run will be held at the same time however, we will meet in the conference room of a club member get your ideas for the 2020 BMW Clubs Australia Nation Motorrad Rally being hosted by our club. I encourage everyone to attend, even if you don’t think you have much to offer, so that the committee can get as many ideas as possible. A light breakfast will be provided so ensure that you RSVP for catering purposes. The Cane Toad Rally has been planned for the long weekend and as most people will be attending the rally we have decided not to have a lunch ride this month. Ride leaders are required for October and November so if you would like to lead the group astray don’t hesitate to put your hand up. If you’ve not planned or led a ride before there are many experienced people who are able to assist. All the details for these and our usual events are up on both the Club webpage and Facebook so make sure you check the details of the ride before heading out. I have organised a significant update to the Classifieds section of the website this month so please try it out and let me know if you have any difficulties. I’m still making a few tweaks. We have had a great month for memberships with our numbers now over 260 financial members. The club business cards have been a real hit. 2020 BMW Clubs Australia National Motorrad Rally Planning Session
ith the 2018 BMW Clubs Australia National Motorrad Rally over, the baton has now been handed to the Queensland club, for the 2020 Rally, to be held in Stanthorpe in October 2020. We would like to make this the best National Rally ever. So, we would like your input, on what makes a great rally. If you are a regular attender of rallies, have experience leading rides or just have an interest, the committee would like you to join us in a planning session, for the 2020 Rally. The Greatest Ride of the Year : Maggie and George’s Buscuit RUN
W
e could not have asked for a better day for the, very popular, annual biscuit ride. So great is the reputation of this ride, that we had Steve and Meredith Herpich and Darrell Jordan ride up from Port Macquarie, NSW specifically to attend the event. A number of riders and pillions met at the Caltex Service station, Carseldine for the led ride where there was much discussion regarding the bike Miss Cindy arrived on: a Harley Davison which she had hired for the weekend. We determined that as she was wearing a BMW jacket she was allowed to ride with the group. After the ride briefing we set out on time from Carseldine to Glasshouse Mountains Lookout for the promised home baked biscuits. There was not a cloud in the sky as we set out for 100k journey through Beerburrum State Forest to the lookout where we joined another 13 riders from the Sunny Coast ride group. In all, there were about 45 people who enjoyed the morning tea of biscuits and slices superbly cooked by Margaret Rafanowicz and, I am sure, quality tested by George. Having eaten our fill, the group then travelled onto Logan’s Inlet on Wivenhoe for a BYO picnic lunch. The riders on the led ride travelled approximately 245 kms in three hours with temperatures ranging from 14° at Carseldine to 27° when we stopped for lunch at Logan’s Inlet. Many thanks go to Maggie and George for work they do for this ride and to Paul Hughes who led the ride.

The Gray Ghost our 2007 GS1200 sailed out of Brisbane for her third European Vacation way back in March. She left early so that she could leave from Brisbane in company with Steve & Rosi Johnson’s bikes. Merv Bone kindly rode her out to the Port of Brisbane in pouring rain as I was recovering from a shoulder operation. We hoped the rain was not a portent of what awaited us in Europe. Jane and I arrived in the Old Dart on 20 July to very hot weather and collected the GG from the shipping agent just outside of Heathrow a few days later and recovered from our long flight. We used Bikes Abroad from Melbourne and Motofreight their sister company in England. She had been collected from Southampton and transported to their Egham depot. She had been slightly damaged in transit having opened up an old war wound on the left handgrip brush protector which was quickly fixed with a couple of zip ties. Some fuel in the tank, air in the tyres, battery reconnected and she fired first time which was a big surprise after such a long layup. The USA manufactured DEKA batteries I use have always provided great service but this was especially impressive. A couple of points to note for any readers contemplating an exercise like ours. In the past we have used the services of Dave Milligan at Get Routed and have been happy with the service. He does however only have dedicated shipment dates which did not suit us this time as we were traveling later in the year. Bikes Abroad will ship or fly your bike anywhere at any time fitting in with shipping or flight schedules. Prices are very similar for the two providers. Insurance for the bike and for us is getting harder to obtain. We used Tour Insure from Germany for the Green Card insurance for the bike - approx. $750AUD for 4 months cover - and Budget Direct Travel Insurance for us. Many companies will not cover for motorcycle use or limit cover to 250cc or less. This now applies to all of the premium Credit Card company associated insurances that we have used in the past. Back to the bike: We headed out to join the carpark that is otherwise known as the M25 motorway. This road circumnavigates London and is constantly congested when not totally gridlocked. Lane splitting on the bike helps but on a hot day with a loaded bike it was still a hassle. After another night with our UK friends we headed east for Norfolk for no other reason than we haven’t been there before. Familiarity with the GG’s controls after riding Rex the Kwaka for the previous 4 months quickly returned and we settled into the rhythm of the road. It had been 6 years since we last rode around the UK and maybe our memories have faded but the traffic seemed that much heavier. We avoid the motorways as much as possible as they are bland and congested but the more attractive secondary roads are also very congested.

The roads are narrow by Australian standards, the villages arrive with great frequency and farm machinery use the roads to pick up the morning paper from the local village.
With the very slow going it was hard to judge distances and some of our expectations had to be adjusted. We usually allow for 7 to 8 hour days including breaks and covering anything around 300km in that time can be difficult. Our first night on the road was spent at the coastal ‘resort” town of Great Yarmouth which could best be described as the Ekka’s side show alley on steroids.
With the hot weather there was also mountains of English flesh on display - not a pretty sight I assure you. Ours is a cultural trip with educational overtures so we have to take the good with the bad. We assume those spending their summer holidays at Great Yarmouth could not afford the cheap Ryan Air flights to the Costa del Sol like the rest of their brethren. As we moved further north around the pretty coastline of Norfolk and onto North Yorkshire the traffic congestion eased and the hot weather abated. We spent a very pleasant few days exploring the North Yorkshire Dales highlighted by a morning at Pateley Bridge which was celebrating a 1940’s weekend. What is that you may well ask, as did we? It’s something the English seem to have a flair for doing ‘oh so well’. The small village was transported back to its 1940’s wartime style with the inhabitants and visitors ‘frocking up’ in clothes and uniforms of the era. Lord only knows where it all came from but it certainly presented as the real deal. Continued on page 19

kids when it’s raining and you’re on holiday - well in the Lake District you load the kids in the car and go sit in the traffic. Sort of makes you homesick for the M25 I suppose. Needless to say our trip through the Lake District will probably be our last. Two strikes and you’re out. Like so many English Kings before us we trekked north to tackle the Scots - hopefully getting a better reception than did Henry the Third. We visited the home of Billy Connolly and its many beautiful wall murals the best of which were painted by Australian artist Sam Bates aka Smug.
The milder drier weather conditions and open roads of the Dales lured us into a false sense of security as we crossed
to the west coast and the Cumbrian region and its famous Lake District. We had ventured here on our 1st Euro trip and had been greeted with flooding rain and a flat tyre on the GG. Not a pleasant experience and one that we were prepared to give the district a 2nd chance to redress. Well we thankfully didn’t get a flat tyre this time but the weather had not changed - it may have been raining constantly since 2010 for all we know.
This is at a time when the rest of England was being baked and in drought. Unfortunate also that this was summer school holidays so what do you do with the

The Gray Ghost’s 3rd European Trip to the gateway to the Highlands, Inverness, which was to be the start point for our assault on the famed North Coast 500 (NC500) tourist route (see separate story). After completing the NC500 we headed towards the west coast town of Peterhead in a semicircular path via the northern section of the Cairngorms NP. One of my resources in planning our routes is an excellent small booklet - Bikers Britain - put together by the riders from Bike Magazine. The Cairngorms feature prominently and with just reason.
Glasgow is also home to a very impressive Transport Museum wherein reside: the R1150 GS and R1200 GS from the famed Long Way Round and Long Way Down journeys in the hands of Ewan McGregor.
There are also some public art features dotted throughout the NP: Quite special.
I only assume they are Ewan’s bikes as he is a Scot and Charley Irish but the plaque did not state. A funny thing happened as we were leaving Glasgow. We popped into a local bike shop early morning and as we parked a Harley did a U turn and parked beside us. I didn’t miss the NSW numberplate. Mark & Michele from Wollongong had just returned to Britain after 4 weeks touring Europe. They had also shipped their bike over with Bikes Abroad. Small world: Only 2 bikes in a Glasgow street and both Australian.
We headed further north past the monument to the Royal Marines at Ben Nevis via Loch Lomond and Loch Ness
The roads were excellent and lightly trafficked save for many other motorcyclists all clutching their copy of Bikers Britain. Peterhead is the home port for the fishing fleets that ply the North Sea fishing banks, filmed in the BBC series Trawlermen. It was also home to my Great Grandmother who had lived here before marrying and Emigrating to Australia in 1883. The old family home still stands on the waterfront and the kindly lady at the local museum gave us an early period photo of the house. Further down the Coast lies Aberdeen where more family connections began. It is a much bigger and more impressive city, the 3rd largest in Scotland behind Glasgow & Edinburgh. The southern part of the Cairngorms NP was tackled en route to a beautiful Airbnb house outside of the small village of Milnathort where we dined in a pub built in the mid-16th century.

This isn’t something we would normally do but on a mates recommendation we did a tour to see how the Royals lived. We were not disappointed. The steam turbine engines on the ship in particular were/are so spotlessly clean and sparkling that famed US General Stormin’ Norman reportedly commented when inspecting the ship during her operational days “these are the museum pieces, now show me the real engines”. Edinburgh, a city rich in history that we last visited in 2010 and loved.
There seemed to be more Outlander devotees than Monty Python fans about as no one joined me when I started singing Sir Spamalot! Next stops en route to Edinburgh was the engineering marvel that is the Falkirk Wheel.-
just google it as I cannot fully describe it here - and the decommissioned Royal Yacht Britannia .
The city was playing host to the famed Military Tattoo as well as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. These two major events have been running in concert with each other for the past 70 years and now dominate Edinburgh for 3 weeks every August. The Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival and the Tattoo is a sell-out for every one of its nightly performances. Edinburgh was well and truly heaving but a great experience. The Tattoo was everything we had hoped for and expected: Spectacular. This year marked the centenary of the formation of the RAF and of the WW1 Armistice both of which received special attention in the presentations.

A special treat for Jane in the backstreets of Edinburgh was running across one of her favourite crime writing authors, Ian Rankin, the creator of the character Rebus, while we were enjoying a pint in his ‘local’ the Oxford Bar. Before leaving Edinburgh we crossed the Firth of Forth over the spectacular new Queensferry Crossing Bridge a truly marvellous piece of Engineering. The new bridge was only opened in 2017 and supplements two other crossings, the Forth Road Bridge (1964) and Forth Bridge (1890 - Rail only) both of which were engineering marvels in their day. This section of waterway truly is a bridge engineer’s nirvana. The new bridge reminded us of the equally spectacular Millau Viaduct in southern France.
Our last riding day in Britain was spent crossing from east to west again on backroads sourced from Biker’s Britain.
An overnight stop in Stranraer awaited before the ferry crossing to Belfast accompanied by scores of other bikes. The Ulster GP was on the next day at the famous Dundrod street circuit. Mileage to date 3,719km covered in Britain. Ireland awaits….

ot a BMW but a shaft drive European (Danish) built motorcycle. Three cylinders in line: 750cc - where did BMW get their idea for the first K bike? I first saw one of these in Copenhagen where its owner said it was very simple to maintain, reliable and gave daily service. They were built up to 1960 mainly for Army, Police and Post Office use in Denmark. There are very many classic bikes being ridden here on the IOM for the Classic TT meet.
THE ROADS OF MANY KILLS THE WINTER IN THE OUTBACK TOUR
M
inus 2 saw the dawn rise in Yarraman which was where Dave Hepburn and I met the previous evening for dinner. By the time our trusty steeds were loaded up, the mercury had risen to a balmy 5c. Clear blue skies and what promised to be a lovely winters day. The Wood-fired bakery in Blackbutt seemed to be where we were all meeting up. Armed with take away coffee mugs with hands clasped around the steaming contents we all met up eagerly waiting to start the trip. Richard (De Groot) had planned the trip and unfortunately, he and Wendy couldn’t join us. Paul Hughes was group leader so it was all systems go.
A few obligatory pictures were snapped, a briefing from Paul and we were on our way. Heading west we soon found ourselves settled into the day and on our way to Chinchilla for lunch. Not too sure whether Paul was under orders from Richard to find a coffee club but this was where we stopped. As per Huw’s soundtrack in his video of day one (The Dusty Diamantine), it was just that. We left the hills behind and a windy, dusty afternoon followed. Tumble weed and paddock dust drifting across the road was all part of the fun and the endless fields which were eager for rain and new plantings. The roads, as most of you know were not what you’d call ‘curvy’, and with a cross wind blowing a gale at times it certainly concentrated the mind.

With the sun getting lower it was fitting that we arrived in Roma pretty much as planned and a hot shower and a beverage was the order of the day.
On our arrival at our hotel Mark Gillmore (who was on business in Roma) was there to greet us and joined us for what was the first of many good dinners. Day 2 and the morning was again clear and bright with one again the promise of a good riding day and a forecast of around 21c. Mark joined us for breakfast and then it was all aboard for the next sector.
Heading further west we made our first stop at Mitchell by which time the thermometer was showing around 15c Liezel and Huw bravely went for a dip in the hot springs, whilst Paul, Dave and I were tempted to don our Man-kinis and join them. We decided on reflection that the town might not be able to recover from the sight. Robbie was staying well clear of that idea and we all settled for a brew and a pie. The roads at time seem endless with acres of wheat fields waving in the breeze. The ride was made a little more interesting with numerous cows on the road which did slow us down in places. Moving with all the urgency of a museum they made their own way across the road not giving us a second glance. After a brief stretch stop at Morven it was full steam ahead eating up the relatively short days riding. Plenty of road kill on this section and Paul observing that this part of Australia must have the best fed birds of prey! Road kill menu included not only the obligatory Kangaroo but also wild boar, rabbits, the odd cow and other animals that were beyond recognition.

Arriving in Charleville and someone suggested a beer! The motion was carried unanimously! By this time, we saw that there were more clouds around and the Bureau of Guessology (some call it the weather forecast) had predicted quite a lot of rain for Saturday. Not giving that a second thought dinner was partaken and a great evening was of course had by all. Day three and a 495 k ride saw the rising sun piercing brightly through the dark clouds which were hell bent on proving the forecasters right. Rain through the night had left us in no doubt (except me) that the wet weather gear would make its appearance. I was however convinced that it might be a good idea and it was! The clouds were developing menacingly along the way and in the distance the jet-black skies were busy giving us a light show with sheet lightning wandering from cloud to cloud and fork lightening that at times was a little too close for comfort. About 20 K’s from Charleville the heavens opened. We stopped about half way to Cunnamulla for a comfort stop and by this time the rain had eased slightly to a cloud burst but this really didn’t bother any of us (who would admit it anyway?) and we carried on along the water drenched road splashing our way through water filled pot holes. Just in front of me I saw Paul slowing down and then finally stopping: Thankfully a break in the rain at this point. Pauls warning lights about his back tyre gave the reason to stop. Robbie being the main mechanic man wasted no time getting on the ground to check it out. Tyre okay and Huw’s suggestion that a Roo’s thigh bone may have gone through the tyre was not the case, and a problem with the sensor was the general opinion. Onward! Arriving in Cunnamulla on what seemed to be a show day it was time for a well-deserved cuppa and lunch or late breakfast. Onwards and now heading south to our destination St George, we were greeted with a mixture of rain, heavy rain and very heavy rain. Passing through the town of Bollon, Paul noticed a pub that served coffee. Not only that but it did have a rather nice roaring fire which we were all jockeying around for the best position! Coffee consumed, bodies thawed and calls of nature answered it was then nonstop to St George. There was a dispute as to whether we would walk to the pub for dinner or call the courtesy bus. The courtesy bus idea won! After dinner a couple of us (No names to protect the guilty) decided that a warming Jameson’s was probably a good idea after all the rain and cold. For medicinal purposes only of course as we decided that prevention was better than cure! Day 4 saw the clouds heading away from us

Leaving St George early with a plan to have breakfast in Thallon and take in the painted Silos. Nowhere open! So, we did what all good tourists do and had our photos taken with a giant concrete Wombat!
Plan B! Ride back to the Nindigully pub and grab a bite there. The rain had made the car park into a large lake and with gloating GS riders carving their way through the mud whilst us RT chaps were a little more circumspect and chose slightly drier pastures, not that there were many.

Cool K Bike… almost perfect
M
ost “K” Bike owners aren’t very familiar with breakdowns and repairs to their trusty machines, but in amongst all those sensors and computers there lies a gremlin ready to strike. Yes, believe it or not they do have a weakness and it’s called “the cooling fan” it may take many years for the situation to arise, but when it does, it could cost you an engine. With summer approaching now is the time to check your fan. During the winter months the fan rarely comes on at all and they can seize up, so when summer arrives and one of those sensors tell the fan to do some work, it can’t and you have a potential engine overheat on your hands. The overheating can be avoided by periodically putting your hand in behind the radiator (with the ignition turned off) and giving the fan blades a spin with your finger, it should turn freely. If the fan is seized, repairing it is not possible and it will have to be replaced with a new one or a second hand unit from the wreckers, keeping in mind that the second hand unit could be a potential engine killer as well.
Buying a new fan will give you a few years of worry free operation, but it will eventually play up as well. I have completed a successful modification on my K1100RS. I fitted an after market fan and now enjoy total confidence when the hot summer months arrive. I also installed an LED on the dash to be a fan operating indicator, so when the fan is on, the light is on and I should see the temperature gauge needle falling. REFLECTIONS on 60 years - gary bennett
BINGARA – 1975 to 1987
In 1975 a weekender started simply called Bingara, and would continue for an incredible 13 years becoming the clubs fourth longest running weekender. It was organised by Club members Geoff and Shona (Duck) Hall and the location was on a sheep station in the northern NSW town of Bingara. The property, called ‘Moreena’ was owned by Geoff’s parents John and Pam Hall. It was the site of the ‘wilder side’ of our clubs history. It’s a great read… enjoy! Gary Bennett #509 The following article was written by Geoff Hall after the final event and published in the 1988 04 Journal. The friendly rabble at the pub, the rumble of a Boxer exiting the obstacle course, the hiss of beer cans being opened, steaks on the BBQ and the crunch of teeth demolishing Pavlova... Bingara meant a lot of things to a fair number of people during its thirteen year history, but there are only four people who attended every one. They are of course, the Halls. It’s probably as good a time as any to share the history of Bingara, the good times and the sad. Bingara was spawned from a conversation between Ian Aitchison, Kath Phillips and the Halls in 1975. A sort of “let’s have a club gymkhana and as what happens”. The arrangements were made and late on a Friday night in November, we were confronted by our first Bingara visitors; Lionel Bull on a purple K2 Honda 750 and John Nealey on an R50 (which now belongs to Duck). Lionel was sporting a T-shirt which proclaimed ‘Get out of Town’ and John an earring and a good mane of black hair. What had we let ourselves in for? We (the young Halls) had some idea, but I think the wiser Halls were wondering. Sixteen machines and 22 bodies fronted the main street the next day. The townsfolk were in a flap! - Even though they’d been warned of the invasion. The local policeman drove up and down wondering what to do with a street full of motorcycles over 500 cc eventually deciding to do nothing - a good move. We befriended the publican and set about the serious business of enjoying ourselves while the townsfolk looked on. The late Wayne Teichman dropped a towering wheelie on his R90S and we exited town for the first gymkhana. Bingara had begun. In those days we had real gymkhanas, “opposite lock” slaloms and full frontal duelling in the balloon bashing.
Crazies such as Nick Stevens were considered dangerous, but on the whole, most people could handle the pace without crashing into each other. The spectator value was high and the adrenalin count of the participants ‘off the meter’ - still it was fun. In 1975 there was no electricity in the woolshed and the loo with a view was awaiting serious christening. Bingara had its first casualty when John Nealey had the unfortunate experience of crashing his R50 on the corner (the deceptive left-hander just after you hit’ the dirt), which now bears his name. Lionel Bull wasn’t happy, it was his R50. He sold it to Duck and Woody Wilson fixed the bike, before proceeding to do a job on it himself by somersaulting it down the road after tangling with a gravel bank. The same corner claimed Brian Corley (1977) going towards town and Kel Wearne (1979) en route to Moreena. He failed to take notice of a hard charging Giant, and went for an outside passing manoeuvre on the assumption that the road went through the gate 20 metres to the right of the ramp: he moto-crossed down the bank into the fence. His popularity declined considerably with BMW Australia as he had scratched their only Motorsport R100S. The Halls have also been in the wars over the years. Duck parted company with her R50 one year and yours truly had “big ends” fail at Manilla - turned out to be the adjuster nut detaching itself from a rocker. In the remainder of the seventies, the popularity of Bingara increased with a peak attendance of 91 in 1978. The O’Shea’s and others visited from far off places like Townsville and Bailey Gifford made the trip from Adelaide. Other long distance efforts include “Elusive” scrambling up from Melbourne in 1987 - a good effort me thinks. People seemed to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the chance to ride their bikes in the gymkhana, a swim in the river, with a few beers/steaks to complete the day. Over the years the obstacle course moved from the hill into the creeks, as the organisers got gamer. People became bogged and fell into the water, some with the motorcycles on top of them! Others climbed trees and performed extraordinary feats in pursuit of a “fast time”. Invariably the riders were scared to death, but silly enough to carry on in pursuit of success! We even included gates, ramps and culverts in some of the courses. The Furkawee Cup evolved with John Hall running all manner of events which were designed to sort out the sheep shit from the ants.
REFLECTIONS on 60 years - gary bennett SEPTEMBER 2018 Scavenger hunts are a challenge on a motorcycle. Everybody seemed to appreciate this event. Just as challenging was the annual chook chase! Motorcyclists complete with appropriate footwear in pursuit of startled roosters! A recipe for disaster and the cause of some bruised egos. On more than one occasion at least one chook manages to escape the desperate clutches of its pursuers, - to head back to the roost. At various times the competitors ended up in the mud hole; or simply crash tackled each other in the eagerness to get to the chooks. On the catering front Pam and Shona’s (Duck) pavlova became famous throughout the land. What they may have lacked in presentation, they well and truly made up for in consistency and sheer flavour. Our diet will be incomplete without the annual pav bomb! John always got the BBQ’s raging ... the trailer on the front lawn, the woolshed cleaned and a thousand and one other things. While rumour has it that the Bingara attendees have shown their prowess in (and out) of their sleeping bags, there have been no births at a Bingara Weekend. No one has owned up to starting a family there, but it’s probably not for the want of trying. Some illicit substances have road mapped various eyeballs, but that’s never caused any problems. In the late 70’s early 80’s, sidecars took their place, in the line up, as families were formed and the “young” invasion started. By 1987, some people have had to resort to cars and even buses to carry their broods. They are however to be congratulated for getting their act together, sometimes a mean feat with kids, and attending, even if they couldn’t fit a motorcycle into their convoy. In the early years, skinny dipping in the river was the norm rather than the exception. Now people seemed to regain their inhibitions, and their clothes, or perhaps the bodies are more worn than they used to be. “Swimming” was usually interspersed with weed fights, mud throwing and other less public activities. In any event, there was always an opportunity to get cool. Strangely enough we never had a truly wet Bingara weekend. The weather always looked kindly on us although the 1983 gymkhana was fairly slippery affair. Actually, 1987 was the closest we got to rain on the day, with a wet Friday night. I can testify that the road in was pretty slippery at midnight, but dry enough for a brisk ride into town on Saturday morning. From a personal point of view there are some pretty funny occasions to remember which include; a bored Lionel Bull pulling guide posts (the old 8” rounds) out of the ground with his bare hands. Looking in my rear vision mirror during a hoon back from the pub on the dirt (which had Just been graded) to

see the yellow 450cc Duke of a guy called Mog about to pull out of the dust and pass. My speedo was showing nearly 90 mph! Tough stuff! Stopping to assist Ian (Dog) Elliott in the middle of the night not far from Moreena only to have him tell me I was heading in the wrong direction, well, he changed his mind when I said I’d been living there on and off for nearly twenty-five years, giving me some claim to knowing the whereabouts of the house. Bingara will pass into club history as a good idea which was actually put into practice. It wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but then, you can’t please the whole club. I’m sure all the regulars will join me in thanking Pam, John and Shona for Bingara. 1987 was the last Bingara Weekend because after 13 years, we felt it was all placing a little too much strain on the Moreena System. Although the club always helped, there was a hell of a lot of behind the scene work to be done if Bingara Weekends were to happen. It is always best to call a halt while everything is going well rather than let something wither and die. In many ways 1987 was one of the best! By now our poor halve starved bodies were in need on food only to find that the place was only just opening and they didn’t serve breakfast and lunch was about 3 hours from then! Plan C!: Back to St George where we refuelled both bikes and ourselves.

With full stomachs and aching bodies, we meandered our way back to the hotel where a couple of us (no names etc) should make sure that the Jameson’s had a fond farewell!
After a couple of stretch breaks we arrived in Dalby and to be greeted by Richard De Groot and Steve Maney. It was as surprising as it was welcome and Richard had made sure there was plenty of room for us at the local pub. Des and Keran Finch (also members) joined us at the dinner table and once again a great evening was had by all.
Our final breakfast at the coffee club and then sadly it was goodbyes all round and off to our homes with 4 days of memories that will last a very long time. One again, many thanks to Richard for the planning and Paul for the execution! Top job!

n our final night of the Winter In The Outback Tour at Dalby we were joined by Keran and Des Finch for dinner at the Russell Hotel. During the course of the evening conversation turned to the many bikes that Des and Keran have and an invite was issued to visit their home to check out the bikes before heading back to our respective homes. Des and Keran’s home used to be at Kaimkillenbun, where their Engineering company is located, but they moved about a year ago to just inside the Dalby Town Boundary, so it was a no brainier to go and check out the bikes. So on Monday morning a number of the group turned up at Des’s home to check out his Man Cave. I have to say that it has to be one of the most impressive man caves I have been in….see for yourself!!!!!!
