clared guilty at the hands of the Witness for the Prosecution? In a world where everyone seems to be harbouring a dark secret, this gripping courtroom drama will keep you guessing until the final fatal moment.

Following the success of The Hollow, The Unexpected Guest, And Then There Were None and Spider’s Web, the Agatha Christie Theatre Company is proud to present the next instalment in the highly acclaimed series, Christie's undisputed masterpiece: Witness for the Prosecution. Emily French, an elderly woman who recently left her considerable estate to the charming young Leonard, is found dead. Will the truth be revealed in time or will Leonard be de-

Brighton and Hove plays host to its first ever full distance marathon this month. Sunday 18th April will see over 10,000 runners aiming to complete a 26 mile route which takes in some of the famous sites of the UK’s most iconic seaside city.

The course starts in Preston Park and takes participants on a looping tour of the best of the city centre and some fabulous stretches of coastal road.

The event, brainchild of Tim Hutchings and Tom Naylor of The Grounded Events Company, was set up due to the shortage of marathons in the UK and the fact that many large races, including the London Marathon, are massively oversubscribed. The organisers aimed to accept 12,000 entries in total for the event. By the end of the first day they had received 1,200 entries from the public and only a day later over 2,500 entries had been sold.

There’ll be bands stationed along the course to entertain the runners and an estimated 30,000 spectators. The race itself is a fairly fast track with only one or two hills to overcome, so it’s possible there could be some impressive times set by the elite entrants. The marathon finishes with a final mile along Madeira Drive, east of the Brighton Pier, where there’ll be a wonderful atmosphere as you’d expect from such a fantastic event.

Eggciting things to do in Brighton this Easter

www.orb360.co.uk

Bored of tired, cheap egg puns and that same old elusive Easter bunny every year? Well, perhaps you should challenge yourself to something a bit more interesting than usual and be more active this Easter. Exercise your body and your demons up at Devil’s Dyke, where you can spend this Spring hurling along at over 30mph down a half-mile course, all the while encased in a giant transparent orb. If that sounds too vomit-inducing after scoffing all those chocolate eggs, then maybe you would prefer to strap yourself onto a mountain board and find out why this eggstreme (no...?) sport has become so popular over recent years. For those who love this time of year and its notorious April showers, the complex up at Devil’s Dyke also features a slippery-smooth aqua slide so that you and your friends can feel what it must be like to be your clothes whenever they are chucked around inside your washing machine. These and other even more nonsense activities are described fully at orb360.co.uk, so check it out if you’re craving some unusual adventures this Easter.

More action can be found at the Brighton Marina, where powerboat and sailing shenanigans can be had with SailNetUK’s new Easter courses, where basic skills in boating are taught and head-to-head yacht races are held. With your muscles fully exhausted, it’s time to exercise your diaphragm at Komedia’s special Easter comedy club. Held on 3 April, it seems Komedia has given up swearing and blue humour for lent, as this session is dirt-free and suitable for ages 6 and up. Visit sailnet.com or komedia.co.uk/brighton if either of these musings tickles you.

Despite the deviation from traditional Easter norms and barely a hint of any egg-puns yet, it should be noted that there are also more conventional activities to partake in that don’t involve any eggsercise (damn...). There are some egg hunts planned around Brighton between the 3-5 April, and the National Trust kick things off back up at Devil’s Dyke on the 3rd, between 11am-3pm, though keep an eye out for the all the screaming people trapped in massive orbs bouncing around. Expect egg-based mysteries, clues and prizes for all the family. At Charleston Barn on the 4th of April, Newsnight’s Mary Jane Baxter will help you create a linen landscape by visiting a series of ‘Sew Stops’ along a trail, with Easter treats awaiting for you when you return. No sewing skills are required, but an empty stomach is advised for both of these investigative and eggcellent (urgh...) days out. Find out more at charleston.org.uk/whatson and on the National Trust website. Another mental Easter tradition is planned for the 5th April, which can also be found on the NT website. It’s the old classic formula: paint hard-boiled eggs and lob them down a hill, in this case down the Dyke Valley. There are rewards for the best decorated and ‘best-thrown/strongest’ egg, and what better and more appropriate way is there to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection than that? By Joel Windels

NORMAN COOK Spring eventually reared its pretty head the other week, producing an overriding urge to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Luckily this coincided with an offer to go over to Norman Cook’s house for an interview with Brighton’s best loved adopted son. So Team BN1 needed little persuasion to decamp to his private beach for some sun and a chat. BN1: It’s been a busy year for you already, and now you’ve got a new album coming out. Tell us about Here Lies Love. NC: It’s been going for about five years. David phoned me up and said: “Do you fancy working together?” I said: “Oh yeah”. He then said it was a musical about Imelda Marcos. Now, if anyone else had asked me about that I would have said they’re insane - it would never work. But it being David Byrne... He’s done weirder things than that and pulled it off. Over the years we’ve slowly finished it off. He’d go on a world tour for eight months and I’d go off and do things. It’s finally out though. It’s very much David’s baby with me just enjoying the chance to collaborate with one of my all-time heroes. BN1: Did you have much trouble assembling the contributing artists for the album? NC: Yes, that probably took two years of the process. I wanted him to sing it all, because when we were working he was singing it and it sounded great. It was like Talking Heads meets Fatboy Slim. But he wanted it to be not even a musical, but a song cycle. It’s a collection of songs that have to be sung in their entirety in the right order to tell the story. That’s probably the most un-commercial thing you can have really. I said if we took the best

8 www.bn1magazine.co.uk

songs out of it and got David to sing it we would have a numberone album. But he wanted it to be a twenty song song-cycle, all sung by a female. BN1: Is there any chance of it going to the stage? NC: That was always the intention, but it’s taken us five years to get the CD and booklet finished! The stage show he’s imagined is not Evita. It’s more like Stomp! meets De La Guarda. He wants it to be an audiovisual extravaganza and it will be a while yet before it happens. His concept goes way higher than the rest. BN1: You’re running in the Brighton marathon this year. How’s that coming on? NC: It’s good. I clocked up twenty two miles on Sunday. I’m really enjoying it. I’m really glad I waited for the Brighton marathon to break my cherry. I’ve been thinking about it, but I just didn’t want to run around London. There would be that one shot on the telly with the commentator going: “Run Fatboy run!”, but I’ve always wanted to do a marathon. Being so Brightoncentric as I am, I’m very proud of things that happen in our city, not somebody else’s. So it was kind of a no brainer that I’d do it. BN1: Is it true you don’t have a personal computer? NC: I do now. I’ve had one for around four or five years. I was

very late and it was only begrudgingly when everyone I worked with insisted I had one. My PA was fed up with having to print every email that I got so I could read it then typing up my reply. I’m not into technology. BN1: What do you think about the instant accessibility of music that’s been enabled by the internet? NC: I think it makes it easy, but sometimes too easy. In the long term, I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old man, but I think that some of the magic of music is being lost. Once people swapped music, saying to people: “Have you heard this artist?” and lending them their album. Now people just access everything at the click of a button, it just makes it too easy. I think over the years pop music will have less of that allure, magic and mysticism. I think I’ve had the main body of my career in a really good time for music. With the advent of CDs and digital technology, and being able to record at home without requiring the budget to go into a studio, we’ve had a really exciting period of music. BN1: What do you think of the current music scene? Are there any trends you like? NC: Crookers, they are on my label (Southern Fried Records) and I think they are brilliant. Hervé I really rate, Count and Sinden and

AKA FATBOY SLIM

Fake Blood. They’re my hot ones at the moment, anything hip-acidhouse really. BN1: That’s the way the charts have gone now. You’ve got rock, rap and dance music and they’re all coming together in a single form. A lot of rap stars are making very housey records. NC: Over the last few years I’ve worked with Dizzee Rascal and I’ve done tons of shows with David Guetta and I’m really proud of what they’ve done. It’s like I was doing 10 years ago. They’re taking it into the pop charts by mixing up all the best bits of dance music. But I’m quite happy for them to be doing it rather than me these days. I feel like I’ve passed on a sort of mantle, especially with Dizzee and David. BN1: Are you more interested in actually getting people in to work in the studio? NC: I still love taking stuff off of old records. There’s a lot fun taking something and mangling it, especially when the original person doesn’t recognise it. That, for me, is the perfect pop record, if you can take something that wasn’t very good (laughs) and turn it something else - and then the original person doesn’t even realise. BN1: Is there anyone that you really want to work with though? NC: I’ve done everybody - Iggy, Bootsy Collins, Dizzee out of this generation, and David Byrne. David Bowie would be the only one on my wish list. But I don’t think I impressed him when we first met. He was knackered after a show, I was drunk and I just started off on the wrong foot with him. BN1: So what’s your involvement with Brighton and Hove Albion now? NC: I think my biggest involvement is the possibility of playing a gig at the new stadium. If we do it,

10 www.bn1magazine.co.uk

it won’t be before they play matches in there. If it happened it would be in the September after it opened. We’d like to do it; they’d like to do it, so it’s just a matter of investigating whether it can be done. BN1: You’re possibly one of the first DJs to stage really big live productions. What’s the reasoning behind this? NC: Just because more and more people were coming and we wanted to give them a good show. There’s only so much a DJ can do. You can only play records and wave your arms around. BN1: What kind of show are you going to be doing at the Boutique? NC: I’ll be playing vinyl for the first time in about two years, because there’s no point in digitising all the old tunes. I’m just going to dig out all the greatest hits of that heady era and try to recreate that carefree abandon. BN1: So how did the Big Beat reunion come about? NC: It was Lee (Cut La Roc), he said he was doing it with Bentley Rhythm Ace. He had John Carter and Damian Harris on board and they thought it would be obscene to have a Big Beat reunion without me, because I was their resident. BN1: What’s the summer hold for you now? NC: I’m doing everything. I’m doing full Moon in Kuala Lumpur. I’m the official DJ for the World Cup, Glastonbury, Rock Ness, big shows in Belfast and Dublin, Athens - it’s going to be another big summer. Sadly there’s nothing in Brighton. SouthWest Four on Clapham Common is the nearest show. BN1: Any predictions for this year? Are England going to win the World Cup? NC: No, they’ll go out on penalties in the semi-finals of course. There’s a good festival fever this

year, which is really healthy. The last few years people have been moaning about too many festivals and not enough money for everyone to go to them. But I think that’s balanced out now. Weather permitting it should be a great summer. BN1: I think it’s really healthy that, due to so many festivals, there’s a big return for live music. People are getting out there and socialising. NC: That’s the one thing you can never replace with the internet isn’t it? I’ve always said that as a DJ playing dance music, as long as young people want to get drunk and laid, there’s always a job for me. I just have to provide the soundtrack. With that he’s off to bashfully pose for our photographer, leaving us to carry on gawping at the view. The story of Norman Cook, and all his various musical guises, is a story of commitment to making people dance. In a career that has revolved around making and playing records with mad, dynamic precision, he’s levered his way into a position where he’s playing the biggest parties in the world and working with some of the greatest musicians ever. Finally there’s living proof for parents everywhere that having an unhealthy obsession with music can lead to great things. Interview By Stuart Rolt

Reject Beats, Rocstar & Concorde2 Present: BIG BEAT REUNION

Featuring Fatboy Slim + Bentley Rhythm (LIVE) + Cut La Roc + Jon Carter + Midfield General + Hardknox + Wildstyle Bob Nimble and live visuals from VJ Air.

Cut La Roc

Cut LA Roc He’s punished sound systems all over the world, appeared on Top Of The Pops, started a DJ agency, set a Guinness world record for DJing with the most decks at once and commanded a four-year residency at The Boutique during a period that saw Big Beat storming the world. He’s also recently released an incredible new album, Larger Than Life, which deftly blends all the different sounds and influences which have shaped his career. Now he and The Boutique are making a welcome return to Brighton for a one-off charity show, so we spoke to him to find out what else was going on in Cut La Roc World.

Music technology has changed enormously since you first emerged, how has this affected your DJ’ing? The actual technology hasn’t affected me that much, although I do plan to move onto Serato at some point this year, I’ve been more directly affected by the fact that record labels and artists promote their music via MP3 now so have had to move onto CDJ’s now or risk playing old vinyl and being a dinosaur!! Tell us about your tour with Bentley Rhythm Ace, what can we expect from you guys? The tour is going great, it’s just like the old days of Big Beat to be honest, a lot of smiles from the crowd especially for the BRA live set, the tour is mainly BRA really as my time is taken up running Rocstar Recordings but I’m playing at the charity event as it was an un-miss able event to play at and for a very worthy cause!

Obviously you wouldn’t be putting on another Boutique night unless you thought people would be interested, but have you been surprised by the enormous wave of enthusiasm the revival has generated? Ok just to make sure it’s clear it a Big Beat Revival night, not Boutique night, the idea is the same though! We’ve been stunned at the response to be honest as there was quite a considerable backlash with all things “Big Beat” but I think the time is right to bring back having a cracking night listening to various types of music, in the old Big Beat Boutique days everyone left with a smile on their faces, the musical genres were mashed up and it was amazing fun, let’s bring that back I say! As you're from Brighton, can you tell us the best places to go out? I moved away from Brighton several years ago, although my close family and daughter Elysia still live there, I live in Colchester now with my wife and 2 children, last time I visited Brighton a couple of months back it had changed so much it was amazing! So my tips for places to go out are probably very dated! Sorry haha .

BIG BEAT REUNION

This new album is a big return to your B-Boy roots, what’s the motivation behind this? The Album is a full account of pretty much most of the styles of music that have influenced me over the years, with my own spin on them of course! Based on old soul 45’s that have influenced up to music that my father used to play when I was growing up (my dad had a large eclectic musical taste) it’s all in their influence wise.

Album Reviews Album: Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip ‘The Logic of Chance’ 2010 Released: 15th March This sophomore effort from the UK hip-hop duo, composed of Daniel Stephens (Dan le sac) and David Peter Meads (Pip), is a refreshing approach to a problem in modern music. How do you say something worth saying without boring those who are listening? The pair combine spoken word verse, electro beats and an occasional pop synthesizer to create a youthful exuberance and yet a level of social scepticism into the bargain. The album covers tragic domestic violence with ‘Five Minutes’ and attempts to smash traditional British political ambivalence with ‘Stake a Claim’. The record is awash with filthy electro beats, humour and political poetry all blended with a pop sensibility which makes it marketable to those the lyrics are designed to reach. ‘The Logic of Chance’ is a very good, in under produced contribution from the Essex based duo. 7/10

Album: Peggy Sue ‘Fossils and Other Phantoms’ 2010 Released: 5th April On December 9th of last year, Peggy Sue took a big step forward and signed to Wichita Recordings Ltd. The Brighton based folk/indie trio are now on the verge of releasing ‘Fossils and Other Phantoms’ in April of this year. The album is an odd blend of heavy handed bass drum beats and indie oriented soft core guitar riffs. With their lyrical maturity and yet frustrated scratchy instrumentals each track seems to live within a paradox of streaky and smooth. On tour they have been paired up with other UK acts such as Mumford and Sons and Kate Nash. This goes some way to helping place their sound with its grand angelic choruses and climatic howling vocals. The tracks to look out for are ‘Fossils’ and ‘Matilda’ on what is a solid debut album. 7/10

Album Review: Gloria Cycles ‘Campsite Discotheque’ 2010 Released: 5th April Confused garage indie rock turned professional. The debut album from the Brighton based foursome ‘Gloria Cycles’ is quite difficult to fathom but easy to suss. From track to track it seems somewhat schizophrenic, from harder rock to harmonic and soft core. They sound like the Dandy Warhols trying to be Bloc Party. Their sound is big, in every sense of the word, alike to other guitar led indie rockers such as Bombay Bicycle Club, but their drum beats are fast and snappy. It is a decent debut effort, produced with obvious talent and a little ego thrown in, but not to the extent of being irritating. That is their sound sussed. It is unfortunately difficult to fathom in terms of its place in the British market. They should have come along five years ago. They will never be short of fans because their style is popular but that is the problem. They sound too familiar to other bands in the genre that have already left their mark. 6/10 by James Rowland

Joan Armatrading Brighton Dome - 13th April

The one and only Joan Armatrading - the breath of fresh air amongst lovers of Folk, Blues and Soul music, one of the first people to combine the 70s Blues vibes with modern upbeat jazz idiosyncrasy is coming to Brighton on Tuesday 13th April, at none other but one of Brighton's most treasured venues, The Brighton Dome. Joan has wisped up instant classics throughout her career that are sure to instill nostalgia among all music enthusiasts, to name but one: 'The Weakness In Me' EP, a classic heart-felt love song that highlights the fragility of human contact and standing testament to 'The Love song' without succumbing to any degree of artificiality or pretense. Joan came onto the scene in 1972, and has teamed up with some of the most renowned names in the music industry such as Cyndi Lauper on the True Colours Tour 1998, and has performed on "Later... Live with Jools Holland" where she performed 'A Woman In Love" and several other classics from her "Into The Blues" EP album. This live event is sure to please those of all ages and origins, as the music Joan conjures up is a universal sound, sung straight from the heart. Her vocal range and musical capability are humbling, and the level of soul in her music continues to pluck the strings of even the coldest of hearts.. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but we dare you to go this event and attempt to keep dry eyes. It is no surprise that her unique sound and take on the music industry has influenced such acclaimed artists as Tracy Chapman and Joan Kingsley to such a degree that her influence is worthy of credit throughout many of their albums in their careers. Joan's music is sure to continue influencing vocalists, musicians and inspiring listeners as her unique sound is timeless. Ranging styles depending on what instrument she plays, be it acoustic guitar, drums or piano, each recording and song that is written is done so with such a precise intent and unassuming approach that it is perfectly fitting for an artist of such reclaim to have been nominated for three Grammy awards,

20 www.bn1magazine.co.uk

and to have so many Gold and Silver BPI Certifications to her name, scattered over the last 35 years in the music business. The Brighton Dome, one of the largest venues in Brighton, provides an ideal setting for Joan and her performance. It boasts several thousand seats and a perfectly tuned audile architecture centering the main stage like a giant speaker system. This is not an event to be missed, and we at BN1 are sure to be at this one-night classic soul-blues extravaganza. Whether Joan will be playing accompanied or not is unknown, however it's an absolute certainty that all those present on this Tuesday evening will be taken on an uplifting journey of humbled introspection and lyrical poignancy. In other words -A show not to miss! Words By Will Nolan

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE 1st - 23rd May 2010 More information and tickets at www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk It’s that time of year again; it is time for Brighton’s favourite summer festival. For just over three weeks Brighton’s sunny shores will play host to a wide array of cultural entertainment to get the season going. It will range across dozens of venues and will include live music acts, cabarets, poetry and extended literature readings, film viewings, traditional and modern theatre, and last but not least a huge splurge of comedy acts to get you giggling. Live Music As far as the music nights go in Brighton, depending on the time and place you could find almost anything you were looking for all year round. With the Fringe Festival in town however there is double the choice and a greater intensity wherever you chose to attend. Major acts to look out for this year will range from the howling vocals and rock riffs of Bad for Lazarus (the Foundry 19th May) to the feel good spirit lift of Brighton Goes Gospel in Concert (Roedean School 15th May). Comedy and Cabarets Cabaret Whore (Laughing Horse @ The Temple 1st – 3rd May) will be one to watch out for. Performed by Sarah-Louise Young coming highly recommended from Time Out Magazine, her brand of comedy blended with her own songs will tear at your sides and will be a really good way to kick off the festival. As far as pure comedy acts are concerned we at Bn1 Magazine believe that a dark sense of humour is often the most effective. If this is something you agree with then get down to Bad Things: Fears Of A Clown (Freerange 13th – 14th May) which will tickle your light and dark side while combining mime and physical theatre. Brighton Festival 2010 The month of May and the Brighton Festival draws ever closer and a few more exciting events have been announced. At the behest of Brian Eno, the festivals guest artistic director This Is Acappella!, a one off celebration of the unaccompanied voice, is being held at the Dome on 7th May. New York Septet Naturally 7 is bringing their special brand of acappella, which they dub 'vocal play', to the event. Going beyond pure unaccompanied vocal harmonies they provide their own backing tracks by replicating a full band using only the power of their voices. Also appearing are 60’s acappella sensations The Persuasions and improvisational 'disinformationist' -Reggie Watts in this unique celebration of the power of the human voice. In a world premiere performance, BAFTA- and EMMY®-winning composer Howard Goodall unveils The Selfish Giant, a full-scale

orchestral reimagining of Oscar Wilde's classic fairy tale on 1st May..This magical story will be brought to life brought to life by a suitably towering ensemble, featuring the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brighton Festival Youth Choir, a guest narrator and Brighton Dome's very own concert organ as the eponymous ogre.

festival aims to utilise the city’s outdoor spaces in new and exciting ways. This year is no exception and the streets of the coty will see a multitude of exciting an innovative works and events. Amongst these is Bodies in Urban Spaces – a dynamic interactive tour of the city’s landscape created by Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner.

Brighton Festival is also presenting two very special nights celebrating the work of prominent American composer Philip Glass. The first is Music in 12 Parts, where the celebrated composer leads his own ensemble at the Dome in a ultra-rare live performance of this four-hour epic on 12th May. The following day will see the Dome playing host to Glass and his ensemble again, this time performing the richly textured soundscape from Godfrey Reggio and Glass's groundbreaking audio/visual collaboration Koyaanisqatsi.

The Level will be playing host to NoFit State. Featuring a spectacular aerial circus playground and open house programme of taster sessions, rehearsals and workshops, this no-holds-barred outdoor circus will be working with local artists and community groups to develop new acts and routines. From live music jams to bicycle ballets and displays of extreme sports - everything will be on show and up for grabs, culminating in one large-scale open-air circus performance in Park Life - The Finale on Sun 23rd May.

Boh no! U2 to headline Glastonbury! Another year, another Glastonbury: the UK’s most notorious festival returns again on Wednesday 23rd of June, with the ‘resale’ batch of tickets soon becoming available on April 11th. The line-up details are as scant as they always are, but the rumours of potential comebacks and cameos are equally rife. The festival will undoubtedly sell out yet again, though there is a cloud of pessimism lingering over this year’s show and it’s not just the obligatory annual rainstorm. First up, only the stubbornly pretentious will be deny awareness of the World Cup; ‘the only event bigger than the Olympics’ will likely not be on the minds of many of the mud-drenched, peace-loving hippies but the recent commercialisation of the site means that there will be many football-loving regulars that may opt out of splashing the £185, or even worse will dampen the mood significantly when England inevitably crash out on the Saturday night. Adding to the poor omens is the growing competition and saturation of the UK festival

scene, which is forever providing more and more diverse and wonderful opportunities to watch bands, sleep in tents, piss in a plastic cubicle and all the other trimmings that summer festivals afford. Glastonbury has also yet again booked a headliner that is devoid of talent or taste, as U2 have been confirmed as one of the weekend’s lead acts. Honestly, they may as well book Sting and Celine Dion and just be done with it – being famous and popular shouldn’t be the only criteria consider when planning a festival. Nevertheless, there is substantial merit behind the amazing reputation that Glastonbury enjoys, and these petty cynicisms aside (because we all know it’s not about football or even the music) Glastonbury 2010 is surely going to be the festival of the summer and should rightly be anticipated with all the gusto that usually surrounds the prestigious event. Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures

Every month @ Komedia Ok, so you’ve seen what the night’s called and you’re preparing to divulge some of your darkest musical confessions, well, you couldn’t be more right. Having swept across clubs and festivals in the UK, Guilty Pleasures has now officially launched a monthly residency at Komedia Brighton and “oh, what a night” it was. Kicking off with all the classic tunes you hate to love, it was hard not to get sucked into the cheesy, middle of the dance floor. From Prince to Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer to Girls Aloud, guessing the next tune was all part of the night’s thrill. Of course if you were there, you will also remember the jaw dropping strip tease by those blokes who look like they live round the corner. Remember the guys from the Full Monty? Ok, now you get the picture. Unashamed of their beer bellies, their rendition of Lady Marmalade whilst dressed in frilly pants, knee high socks and nipple tassels was simply hilarious. Everybody loved it and later when they appeared in Lycra leotards with ribbon sticks, clubbers couldn’t stop themselves jumping on stage to join in. Though best enjoyed with a tipple or three, the kinship between clubbers aged anything from eighteen to sixty was certainly the best part of the night. Imagine if you didn’t mind making a tit of yourself mouthing to words to Hanson’s Mmm Bop to the stranger next to you. Well, maybe that was just my guilty pleasure! But who could forget the guy who leapt up on stage to perform his crowd pleasing display of footwork to the smash hit Footloose. You know who you are and everybody else will when you probably end up on YouTube! With drinks at reasonable prices, including special offer £2.50 spirit and mixer and Oranjeboom, if you don’t mind paying the tenner entry fee, it’s a guaranteed night of frivolous fun and Brighton laughs. BRIGHTON & HOVE FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL

Between 11th and 21st of March came the delicious Food & Drink Festival ‘Spring Harvest’! www.bn1magazine.co.uk

Food & Drink Spring Harvest Brighton Spring Harvest Food & Drink Festival was one of the highlights of March. This three week celebration of the best food and drink to be found in Brighton and Sussex saw a wide variety of events at venues across the city. One of these was a tasty two day Big Sussex Market that set up camp on New Road over the 13th and 14th. Thousands of people swarmed down to sample and buy fare from the four corners of the world. The enticing spicy aromas of freshly cooked dishes and the vibrant colours of painstakingly laid out displays entwined to create a stirring assault on the senses. The market was a good chance for local food outlets to meet and show their customers what they have to offer, and find out what Brighton’s assembled gastropods would like them to be doing. Amongst the endless flow free samples there were local restaurants cooking up their specialities to feed those wanting to consume something more substantial. Whether it was spicy Chorizo from the Spanish Food Company or authentic Texan barbeque from the BBQ Shack, there was local shops and producers providing delicacies for every discerning palette.

Food & Drink IT’S MY PARTY AND I’LL PIE IF I WANT TO… My Birthday this year coincided with “National Pie Week” - so what better thing to do than go and hunt out a decent pie and a pint? As it happens, one of my favourite pubs - The Duke Of Norfolk - now specialises in pies: What extraordinary luck! The venue then was a given. But what of the pies? Supplied by Bristol based Pieminister and all hand made, they are, to put it simply, Pietastic meal at The Duke of Norfolk superb. Real pastry pies - none of your crust on top of a dish nonsense - filled to the brim with the highest quality ingredients; you’d have to go a long way to beat them. And when you team them with the pub’s own choice of excellent mashed potatoes - from cream and butter to jalapeno - and gravies/sauces, from Guinness and mushroom to roasted garlic and onion, you get over 3,000 combinations of gorgeous pie based goodness. Apparently it would take 8 years to eat all the possible permutations. I don’t know if it would actually be possible to eat them all; but it would be certainly be worth giving it a go. On my Birthday visit, I had the Posh Cheese and Onion Pie (yum) Jalapeno Mash (double yum) and Tomato & Chilli Gravy (even yummier!). My friend had the Roast Pork and Sage Pie, and declared it the most succulent and delicious pie he’d ever eaten. And although I’m a veggie, I have absolutely no reason to doubt him. Neither pie remained on the plate long enough for much inspection anyway - they were far too delicious for that. As was the beer - they keep an excellent pint at the Duke… So in closing, there’s only one more thing I feel I need to tell you. Since going to the Duke Of Norfolk for the purposes of my Birthday (and this review) I’ve been back three times, just for the pies. In two weeks! And I have no doubt it’ll be at least four visits by the time you’re reading this. Words and Photography By Nick Titchener

The West Quay We’re all agreed that Wetherspoons gets a lot of flack, but I am unashamedly a fan of the West Quay. When seeking out a good pub restaurant there are certain things you look for and I have to say the West Quay ticks a lot of boxes. Its great

value for money, tasty grub, scenic views, spacious indoor/outdoor seating and usually prompt service means there’s not much left to complain about. The menu comprises starters, sharers, a deli selection and great promotional deals including a beer and a burger for just over a fiver. In the week, expect steak club Tuesday, curry club Thursday and for all those roast lovers, Sunday Club where you can enjoy quality food for a good price. Ok, at weekends it can be quite busy but what do you expect when everyone’s strapped for cash. Come on admit it, you love this place too! SHAKEAWAY If you believed everything you read about what is and isn’t good for you, there would be nothing left to eat. This is why it’s fantastic that we have places like ShakeAway that celebrate eating something simply because it tastes so good? Choosing your shake is a tough decision and I’d recommend you take them up on their offer of a loyalty card as chances are you’re going to be back. Fortunately their menu is printed on A5 cards as well as on the chalkboard so you can grab a copy and try and narrow down the many tempting options. Every shake is made with real ingredients so when I chose my Turkish delight shake with maltesers; it was made from real Turkish delight chocolate bar not some artificial flavouring, with maltesers sprinkled on top. Of course, you could choose Jaffa cake or Daim bar or well... pretty much anything you can imagine! They do dairy free milkshakes as well and yes, for those who still want to remain virtuous, they do low fat ones as well. My brother in law frequently says

“go large or go home” and I couldn’t say it better myself in this case: so get down to ShakeAway, load up a heap of calories into the blender, shake and enjoy. Life’s too short not to. By Leigh Higgins SHAKEAWAY 8 Bond Street Brighton BN1 1RD 01273 711179

BLUE MAN RESTAURANT I’m a huge fan of North African cuisine with its flavours of cumin, coriander, dates, apricots and preserved lemon, so discovering the Blue Man Restaurant was a real find for me. Open for 8 years now, the Blue Man is tucked away in Little East Street and perfectly blends the spices of North Africa with the sun-kissed flavours of the dried dates and apricots of the region. It’s the ideal place to introduce yourselves with the subtle cuisine of Morocco. I love the house speciality, Khrouf, a lamb tagine with prunes and chickpeas which is perfect for my sensitive palate (black pepper is enough to set off the fire detector in my mouth!), my partner on the other hand, has a Teflon coated palate and always goes for the chicken tagine although I have a sneaky feeling that’s just his way of stopping me from sneaking bites from his plate.

The Booze Hound! Delirium Tremens Frank Zappa once suggested that “You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need to have a beer.” Belgium is well renowned for nothing in particular, it has no airline, it has no nuclear weapons, I’m fairly sure it has a football team, but that of which I am absolutely certain…it has many, many fine beers. Belgium boasts well over 500 different beers, so choosing one to review is something of a dilemma. After much deliberation I plumped for a modern classic, a world champion beer, voted number one in Kallen’s 50 Greatest Beers of the World and banned for several years in the U.S. for it’s promotion of excessive drinking…it can only be Delirium Tremens. The name derives from the Latin “trembling madness” often associated with alcohol withdrawal symptoms, more commonly referred to as the DT’s. This triple fermented 9%(abv) beer is not overly complex in terms of flavour but it skilfully delivers manful helpings of hop and malt flavours. Delirium Tremens has a fruity citrus finish with a satisfying warm alcoholic glow that leaves you clamouring for the next bottle. I don’t like to cast cultural aspersions, but the real wonder of this brew is how a nation so crushingly dull can create a beer of such character and poise. As they say in Belgium…op uw gezondhied. Jean Genie

Denim is back. Although, I’m not too sure when it was out! This season’s take feels nostalgic of the ripped, frayed, torn designer jeans of the 1980‘s. This time round the look is Double Denim. And not just any denim combo. The look is clashtastic! And perhaps to the untrained eye - just plain wrong. For denim diva's it's so wrong it’s right! Choose from faded vintage, white fibre-flashing distressed or holey destroyed denim. Later in the season we’ll be chasing cuffed shorts and playsuits. But for now fashionista’s will want to sport two completely different shades of denim. A faded cropped gilet or vintage black acid wash denim jacket with studs worn over a knotted white tee teamed with dark blue skinny, super-skinny or distressed white jeans is doubly cool and bang-on-trend.

Jaynie Ralph

If, like me, you remember wearing something similar in 1982 and are now more interested in a pair of flattering slacks that half the size of your bottom, read on. Fashions change, times change, your lifestyle changes. But your basic shape doesn’t. Finding the right shape jeans can change your life. It’ll save you time in the mornings, make you feel thinner, taller & altogether more gorgeous as well as attracting an army of adoring fans.

Top Shop Denim Jacket £50.00

Skinnys are so hot at the moment you’ll find them everywhere. If you are stuck in a straight jeans or bootleg rut and have slim legs I beg you, try some on. These figure-hugging beauties suit all from tall to petite. If you feel a bit pulled in at the waist and spilling over, find a top in a thicker fabric so onlookers are just wowed by your tiny thighs. Wear them with heels, flats, tucked into all boots especially cowboy boots or with thigh high boots. Roll them up and wear with cuffs or kitten heels. If you love skinnys and leggings, you’ll love Jeggings; a sprayed on denim look super-slim legging. If you have heavier, curvier legs these are not your best look so you can leave these to your chickenlegged friends and find your fit elsewhere.

Straight leg - classic, traditional and can be worn with everything. This is flattering if you have hips or not as they give the appearance of leaner pins. They’re perfect if skinnys make you feel top heavy. This style never dates and makes the perfect weekend away jeans with soft knits, tweed jackets or trench coats. A medium to high rise flattens any tummy you have and large or higher back pockets will make you bum look smaller. Wear a top that cuts your bum in half to make it look even smaller. Low-rise straight legs look good if you are petite. So if you are 5 ft 3” or smaller stay away from flares or any jeans with too much embellishment. Flared jeans look wonderful if you are tall. As you have lovely long legs you can don all sorts of interesting rippings, patterns and washes. Team your jeans with a long hanging leather bag with tassels, a long scarf and some gold gladiator sandals.

Top Shop Boyfriend Jeans £40.00

Bootleg jeans are for made for you if you have wider shoulders than hips, or wide hips as the wider bottoms balance both of these out. They do work miracles in giving you a fantastic high voltage silhouette. Add some tailoring chic with a neatly cut jacket. Wear over boots (they were designed to fit over cowboy boots), flats or heels. Make sure the heel is 1cm off the ground as this will make your legs look longer. If you are heavier find a bootleg in dark curve-loving stretch denim with a medium or high-rise waist. Keep the details at the front simple and pockets higher on the rear.

Top Shop Ice Wash Cut Off £30.00

Boyfriend. Whether you actually have one or not this look is for you if you want to create curves and height. Meant to be worn baggy they aren’t as flattering as other jeans. If you mainly carry your weight around your hip area these can be worn in your favour too. Wear them a bit tighter with turn ups, add socks, heels or shoe boots to show off your gorgeous ankles. Plus a high necked soft ruffled top, add lots of gold necklaces and a man’s watch. To finish off the look team with a boyfriend cardi or jacket. If you have a flat stomach - be the envy of others and wear a belt around the outside.

Adrenalin Junkie: Suzy Madge Brighton adventurer to ski mountaineer

In Continuation of our Adrenalin Junkie series, BN1 Magazine managed to obtain some time with local adventurer Suzy Madge. Suzy is a record-breaking adventure athlete, a ski mountaineer, a motivational speaker, an award winning film maker, a tour guide and a life coach, and as if that is not enough to keep her occupied she has been planning her next expedition, taking her to a place where very few people have ventured – the Qala-e Hurst Valley in the Wakhna Corridor, north east Afghanistan, where many of the mountains are still unclimbed and unnamed.

You’ve been able to visit and experience many places and cultures that the average person will never have the opportunity to see over the course of their lifetime. How has this changed your view of the world? I try to suspend judgement about places and instead experience every moment as it is, which can be quite tricky. Take Afghanistan for example. Through the media we have one definite image of the country, and it will be interesting to see

38 www.bn1magazine.co.uk

what I experience. It is a bit like playing a game of pass the parcel but always being the unwrapper, unravelling layers of understanding as to how other people live and are happy. Has there any moments when you’ve thought “actually, I’d rather be working in an office right now!”? No, although after my tent blew away (happily I’d already escaped) during a 100mph storm at 6200m in the Himalayas, I

did think that I’d rather be kite surfing. Whilst working at the computer has its advantages - right now I am warm, there are no threats of avalanches, frostbite or altitude sickness, and I’d still rather be out high on the mountain with all the beauty and discomfort that goes along with it. Is there anything you wouldn’t do? In mountaineering terms, I would never attempt to summit K2, a mountain with a very high

Adrenalin Junkie

death rate. Something ridiculous like one in four people who summit, die! What drives you to achieve your objectives? I am a curious soul, fascinated by what our bodies and minds can do. We can all do way more than we think we can. How do you choose your adventures? Is there a team of people passing you suggestions for places to visit, or do you just stick a pin in a map? I listen to my heart. If someone is talking about an adventure or mountain and I get a little stab of pain in my core, I recognise this as my desire to do something similar and then try to organise it. Last year I took the specific decision to not organise anything and see if anything came my way, but it didn't, so now I am back to deciding and organising myself. How much preparation does it take to get you on your expeditions? I can’t see you simply turning up at Gatwick with your skis asking for a ticket to Afghanistan. I had a five year plan to climb and ski Cho Oyu, an 8200m mountain which I did in 2008. For five years I saved money, trained, planned, doing a mountain a year. Afghanistan has been 6 months planning, so I suppose that is a lot of preparation Do you get nervous before an expedition? Do you feel there is pressure for you to achieve more and more extraordinary accomplishments?

I just get incredibly excited. I don’t feel under any pressure at all as I am doing what I love and love every single minute of what I do, even in the most outrageously dangerous situations. I feel alive, as if I belong in the world during adventures. Is it possible to pick a favourite place that you’ve been to? Every mountain I go to is incredible at the time. Sometimes the place isn't extraordinary but the people are. There are some places not asSuzy Madge sociated with adventure that have left me feeling Are there future adventures on terrible - Dachau, killing fields in your agenda? Cambodia. What do you do to relax? Or is it all get up and go for Suzy Madge? Somehow I can’t imagine you sat in your dressing gown watching Hollyoaks. The simplicity of life up a mountain is calming compared to the bonkers business we have here, with traffic, internet, mobile phones, and mirrors everywhere. Imagine a month with no electronics or machines - that is pretty relaxing when all you can see is white snow and hear is your own breathing. If you had to live your life over again, what one thing would you change? I would have started adventuring and mountaineering when I was younger - I really started when I was thirty.

The Afghan trip is a bit of a reconnaissance to see what the possibilities are over there. I imagine I will go back, maybe with more people. I would also love to spend more time in Nepal. I really would love to give people the inspiration and confidence to get out there and do more stuff. The happiness and fulfilment one can achieve in adventure is amazing. What is your advice for kids who want to follow in your footsteps? There are loads of ways to earn money and carve a life for ourselves. Discover what makes you happy by trying loads of different things and find something that you love and are good at. And then do it.

Launched by executive coach, author and speaking expert Jackie Arnold, the competition is designed to give young people a boost and help prepare them for future challenges such as entering into the job market, colleges or universities. It will offer aspiring young speakers an opportunity to make themselves heard with a competition, workshops, mentoring support and advice from an expert panel of judges, mentors, DJs and more. “It’s important to give young people confidence in their own ideas, to help them believe in themselves and learn how to be assertive without being aggressive”, said Jackie. Joan has whisped up instant classics thoughout her career that are sure to instil nostalgia among all music enthusiasts, to name but one: ‘The Weakness In Me’

EP, a classic heart-felt lovesong that highlights the fragility of human contact and standing testiment to ‘The Lovesong’ without succumbing to any degree of artificiality or pretense. Joan came onto the scene in 1972, and has teamed up with some of the most renowned names in the music industry such as Cyndi Lauper on the True Colours Tour 1998, and has performed on “Later... Live with Jools Holland” where she performed ‘A Woman In Love” and several other classics from her “Into The Blues” EP album. This live event is sure to please those of all ages and origins, as the music Joan conjures up is a universal sound, sung straight from the heart. Her vocal range and musical capablity are humbling, and the level of soul in her music continues to pluck the strings of even the coldest of hearts.. Joan’s music is sure to continue influencing vocalists, musicians and inspiring listeners as her unique sound is timeless. Ranging styles depending on what instrument she plays, be it acoustic guitar, drums or piano, each recording and song that is written is done so with such a precise intent and unassuming approach that it is perfectly fitting for an artist of such reclaim to have been nominated for three Grammy awards, and to have so many Gold and Silver BPI Certifications to her name, scattered over the last 35 years in the music business. The Brighton Dome, one of the largest venues in Brighton, provides an ideal setting for Joan and her performance. It boasts several thousand seats and a perfectly tuned audial architecture centering the main stage like a giant speaker system. This is not an event to be missed, and we at BN1 are sure to be at this one-night classic soul-blues extravaganza. Whether Joan will be playing

accompanied or not is unknown, however it’s an absolute certainty that all those present on this Tuesday evening will be taken on an uplifting journey of humbled introspection and lyrical poignancy.
