APRIL I hope you’ve all set your clocks to British Summer Time, we don’t want to catch anyone living in the past. If you need extra waking up, then it’s UK Coffee Week on Monday 22 – Sunday 28 April. The sixth Record Store Day takes place on Saturday 20, where the best of the UK’s independent record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl releases and various promotional products have been made exclusively for the day, so get yourself down to Cult Hero, Borderline, Resident, One Stop, Rarekind or RK Bass and help keep vinyl and small businesses alive. This month sees the return of the increasingly popular Brighton marathon on Sunday 14, where the city’s sportier residents will be eagerly dragging their gasping sweaty bodies up and down a 26 mile course. Seriously kids, don’t do drugs, just take up running. The results are the same and it’s better for you. Want to see women drinking their body weight in lager and men throwing little arrows at a giant cork-coaster? Then check out the ninth round of the McCoy’s Premier League Darts as it visits the Brighton Centre on Thursday 4 as part of its three-month UK tour. Reigning McCoy’s Premier League Darts champion Phil Taylor, Robert Thornton, Adrian Lewis and Raymond van Barneveld are amongst the ten athletes fighting it out on the night. I hope you all realise it’s St George’s Day on Wednesday 23, and as such will be celebrating our national saint by binge drinking, moaning about the weather, watching Downton Abbey and pretending to have killed a dragon. Better still, Cockney knees-up icons Chas and Dave are coming to The Concorde 2 for a celebratory gig on Sunday 20. A better night out we have yet to discover.

NEW 20MPH SPEED ZONES City wide If you’re hoping to use your mum’s car to re-enact scenes from The Fast and The Furious in Brighton and Hove, then think again. In an effort to improve road safety, a 20 mph speed limit will be introduced on 8th April in the city centre. It’s estimated that over 95% of pedestrians involved in a 20mph collision survive, compared with only 80% at 30mph. A review of the impact of 20mph zones in London over a 20 year period demonstrated a significant reduction in road casualties particularly amongst young children.
BIG DADDY KANE Concorde 2 18th April From Bed-Sty to Brighton Beach, one of the original innovators of Rap, Big Daddy Kane, comes to The Concorde 2 on Thursday 18 Apr. Having just released his first album in over a decade, this evolutional lyricist is one of the greatest MCs in the world. There isn’t an MC anywhere who won’t be citing him as an influence. But don’t take our world for it, get yourself down there and witness what makes this man a living legend. www.officialbigdaddykane.com

This year Channel 4 will be televising the race so get on down and show your support and hopefully you’ll get to see yourself on TV, overexerting on hand waving!
A preview of Tony Frisby’s 5th poetry collection prior to its publication by renowned poetry publishers, Waterloo Press. “Me, Me, and Not Me is an attempt to tease into the light those differing memories, events and peoples who, having shaped me, now seem to have taken up permanent residence in that simple space I once called ME.” Vanessa Austin Locke and Alice Walker, two of Brighton’s best female poets, also reading at the event.
Pop-up restaurants are always a mind (and palette) expanding affair, offering the chance to dine, and soak up the company of like-minded people, in a variety of unusual a nd exciting locations. MUSIC PREVIEWS BY BRAD MIDDLETON
THE SWANS 2nd April // Concorde2
Michael Gira’s most famous vehicle always presents challenges for music venues. They are undoubtedly one of the loudest bands ever to have walked the face of the earth and whilst the sound is more calming and less abrasive than it was when they came out the melting pot that was New York’s post-punk/early nowave scene of the late 70s the threat of two drummers should signal their intent to continue the tradition. The Swans reformed three years back and in that time have released three new albums, two studio efforts including the epic and sprawling The Seer and one live album and have toured the world. This however is their first trip back to Brighton in that time and I am sure it will be great to see them again.
HOUSE OF LOVE 10th April // The Haunt
The band who could have been the new Smiths when the old Smiths split up way back in the mists of time return to Brighton once more for another great show of late 80s/early 90s indie nostalgia. A band who promised so much and largely delivered but who couldn’t ever really get out of the shadow of The Smiths; in all honesty who could expect to back then? A couple of great records, some great songs and a nod towards what was then the nascent shoe-gaze scene that ate up HOL guitarist Terry Bickers for a while with his Levitation band.

EDWYN COLLINS
PERE UBU 13th April // The Haunt
EDWYN COLLINS 25th April // St George’s Church
Quite simply one of the most important US bands of the 1970s Pere Ubu have always been interested in the weirder things in life. Formed in 1975 they have always pursued an interest in exploring something artistic rather than simply judging themselves by commercial targets and for that we can only be thankful. A whole slew of weird and often wonderful albums have dropped from their collective over the years; in particular the amazing Dub Housing record that originally dragged the attention of the underground to their humble origins in Cleveland, Ohio. On a personal note David Thomas is one of the most amazing and attention grabbing front men I have ever had the pleasure to see.
The nearly man of indie-pop who could have had it all but who just missed the opportunities to be a regular hit maker by either a case of bad luck or by being too much of a perfectionist. Starting out with semi-legendary Scottish indie-pop band Orange Juice the pattern of big hit and no follow-up was cemented with the seminal tune Rip It Up, and then nothing of equal commercial success. Collins however never let it bother him and his determination to do music on his own agenda meant that he was happy with his lot as someone whose work was lapped up by a small but very devoted crowd. He had another huge hit with Girl Like You in 1994 only to drop off the map again until in 2005 it was announced he almost died after a cerebral haemorrhage required major brain surgery. Since then however he has returned to music and produced a new record, 2010’s Losing Sleep.
DINOSAUR PILE-UP 25th April // The Prince Albert
THE FILAMENTS 27th April // The Prince Albert
Leeds grunge rockers who have been busily making a name for themselves since their formation in 2007 and who with one new album already released this year and another to drop before years end are building a momentum to make them one of the names to remember and keep an eye on for good things. They have toured with The Pixies and must have learnt a lot as their music is quite definitely influenced by their former touring mates. Great pop songs wrapped in a hard, visceral tone that makes this reporter very happy.
Raging political ska-punks from Chelmsford, Essex who originally burst on the scene in the early 00’s but then disbanded amid chaos and fall-outs shortly after a barnstorming show at the old London Astoria in 2006. During those years they built a reputation as being one of the best live bands on the scene and with 2004’s second album What Next? arguably one of the best records too. This show should be a raucous and fun night for all the old punks out there whose legs ain’t packed in yet.

BN1 CHAT’S WITH...
DINOSAUR PILE-UP
What happened to all the guitar bands? We’re not talking about the globe-trotting stadium rock acts that get played on Radio 2. We’re talking about the hard-rocking types that pump it out in sweaty venues night after night, distortion pedals cranked right up and hair flying everywhere. The 70’s had the likes of The Ramones and The Clash doing it for the kids, the 80’s gave us Sonic Youth and the 90’s? Well the 90’s had Nirvana leading a pack of incredible acts. But since the Millennium, everything’s seemed a bit corporate and knowing. It’s unlikely nobody’s interested in blistering guitar riffs any longer, so why don’t we hear them on the radio more? “In the mainstream it became unfashionable, in the underground scene it never became unfashionable,” Matt Bigland, Dinosaur Pile-Up’s lead singer and guitarist tells us. “It’s coming back around, not that it matters to me. I’m just doing whatever. But 10 years ago Rock was massive, now there are amazing bands playing guitars everywhere, but no-one’s heard about them. “ Bigland is in the perfect place to make judgements like this, right now, as Dinosaur Pile-Up are on the verge of breaking through into our collective consciousness. Their new album, Nature Nurture, is one of the most anticipated records on the scene at the moment; with lead single Arizona Waiting being given ‘Hottest Record In The World’ status by Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. “The fact this albums getting loads of attention is great, because people outside our scene get to appreciate it.” Together with drummer Mike Sheils and bassist Johnny Seymour, Bigland is set to take the new material on the road, firstly with fellow rockers Lower Than Atlantis, then their own headline tour, which includes a visit to the Prince Albert on Thu 25, all leading up to the album’s release on Mon 13 May.
music makes you feel. We were recording lots of stuff on the fly, we just went with the flow on a lot of stuff.” Having locked himself away to record the new material what’s it going to feel like when he finally gets to unleash the new stuff on a live crowd? “The ideal situation for me is to write an album, then go and play it live for two straight tours. You play it live, and then record it. Playing live totally puts a new energy and different spin on it. When you start to play the songs every night, you kick it harder than in the studio and songs tend to grow a bit and get into another space. Maybe that’s what I’ll do for the next album, I’ll tour it first.” From the way he speaks so passionately about his craft, it’s obvious that there’s nothing else he’d rather be doing, and this includes playing his songs live. “You get in the zone. I love playing shows. When you’ve been on the road for two months straight you get into a kind of a vibe, but we’ve not done a world tour yet, so I’ve only experienced the tip of it.” It would seem there’s a lot of heart and soul put into all of Dinosaur Pile-Up’s music. As Bigland has grown older and wiser, so has his approach to writing. “Growing Pains was the first full length record I’d done, and I did that on my own also. I blasted through that. I love that album, but it’s quite direct, and maybe one-dimensional, as a record. I feel as a writer very multi-dimensional, so I think when I came into this one I wanted to show lots of sides, I wanted to give it texture. “Growing Pains was definitely about growing up, then Nature Nutire felt like a good place to take it. There are lots of ups and downs. Being in a band now is hard, the journey from Growing Pains to here was very up and down. Surely as a songwriter, if you’re writing songs for yourself, it becomes autobiographical.”
Bigland is positive the fans are in for a treat. “It’s real and
BY STUART ROLT
visceral. It’s definitely a broader album, which I’m happy about. It’s still kicking, but it’s got bigger and broader songs on it. I can’t wait to be playing it live. “It’s a bit of a megalith for me, as I went into the studio with 25 songs and recorded about 17. It was like a test for me, I wanted to smash it and do as many songs as well as I could. It was a hard and intense process, but I quite liked that because it seemed to reflect the vibe of the album. I was working with Ian (Davenport – Producer for Radiohead, Band of Skulls and Supergrass), he’s a killer guy who’s very in tune with how the
Dinosaur Pile-Up play The Prince Albert on Thursday 25th April. The album, Nature Nurture, is released on Monday 13th May. Plus they’ll be one of the bands everyone’s trying to catch at The Great Escape Festival.

THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL
BRAD MIDDLETON GIVES US AN INSIGHT INTO JUST SOME OF THE ACTS PERFORMING AT THIS YEAR’S THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL, 16 - 18 MAY
Arguably the musical highlight of any year in Brighton is the annual Great Escape festival which returns again this year (May 16th-18th). This year they present over 350 bands across 30 venues and whilst it would be impossible to let you know about all of them here are a few of what we at BN1 consider to be highlights. It looks like another great year for fans of music at TGE but don’t feel limited to these people as one of the great things about TGE is its ability to deliver a simply stunning set from a complete unknown!
BEACH FOSSILS This great indie-pop band from Brooklyn, like Young Rival, has already graced the stage at the Great Escape and who will again be a real highlight of the festival. Formed in 2009 Dustin Payseur, for Beach Fossils started out as just his singular vision, had a record deal with Captured Tracks before he had even assembled a touring band. After playing countless shows across their home country they had gathered a devoted fan-base and from that position took on the task of attaining world domination. Their music should be perfect for TGE as its jangly, noisy, summer-vibes are perfect for an ideal May in Brighton, so lets hope the sun is out and the Fossils will doubtless present a perfect soundtrack.
ED HARCOURT
THE GRISWOLDS
Every year a band playing TGE is heralded as the one to watch and this year it is this bunch from Australia who only formed in February last year. It’s pretty impressive that in their short existence they have already had a top ten hit on US college radio’s indie charts with their debut singe Mississippi which mixes the typical guitar-pop with tropical beats to create a sound that is definitely now. Their second single, Heart of a Lion, showed their more exuberant party side and continued to build their profile. This is their first stop-over in the UK so lets welcome them and hope they return many times. I hear a debut album is due at some point this year.
YOUNG RIVAL
This local singer-songwriter from Lewes has grown from strength to strength since his departure from Heavenly Records in 2006 and his live shows are often captivating experiences. If you need any proof just listen to 2010’s album Lusture, his sixth album since debuting in 2001, and you’ll hear what I mean with its Tom Waits inflicted sound of weird jazz, folk and rock’n’roll. Don’t worry though, he is definitely his own man and this should be a treat for anyone who is keen on the developing sounds of folk in the twenty-first century.
This bunch of great Canadian indie-rockers can now almost be considered veterans of the Great Escape after their triumphant show back in 2011 which left many believing they were ready for the big time. Hailing from Hamilton they take all the key developments of indie-rock over the last dozen years and throw into the mix some great pop sensibilities from the sixties which present a real treat. Think part Strokes, part Pixies and a small dollop of Beatles and you’d be about half way to understanding just how good these guys are. They will be a definite highlight of the entire festival for your correspondent.
BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 13 ]
BILLY BRAGG As has become the norm over the last couple of years, a couple of big shows require special tickets but this year it could be worth it for the chance to see the legendary Billy Bragg. Mr Socialism, folkprotest singer extraordinaire, what can I say about him that hasn’t been said a million times before. Well this is his thirtieth anniversary of playing music, he has a new band and he’s really looking forward to playing a town he’s always been fond of. He’s due to play The Dome on 17th May.
THE BLACK HEART REBELLION
These Belgians began in 2004 as part of a small but not insignificant punk scene in their homeland but have developed beyond that sound over the time. The fundamental reason was their constant interest in new influences, whether visual, graphic or indeed musical and how to implement that into their music. It took four years to record their new record Har Nevo and it is a clear leap forward in terms of an artistic evolution and maybe the time is now ripe for The Black Heart Rebellion to leap into the realms of mainstream. Let us hope that if they do it doesn’t distract them from pursuing their artistic development towards its natural conclusion.
EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER
Great Brighton-based weirdo gothic-punk nut-jobs return with their biggest show since their return from their hiatus during which we were starting to wonder whether we would get to hear their deliciously illicit sounds again. Fortunately they got back together last year and are ready to let us have it all again. Expect volume, weirdness and all manner of crazy rock’n’roll antics from one of Brighton’s greatest ever bands.

COMEDY HIGHLIGHTS By Stuart Rolt BOOTHBY GRAFFOE Komedia // Thursday 11th April
MAN UP: JONNY FLUFFYPUNK Upstairs At Three and Ten // Wednesday 17th April
Boothby Graffoe takes to the Komedia stage on Thur 11 for his show: Nomad, No Sane Either. Likened to a musical Spike Milligan, this talented twisted eccentric mixes observational humour and absurdist stand up. With fabulous songs like Kittens in a Bag, A to Zzz and Bungee Girl, he’ll be making you laugh and cry at the same time. But songs aside, his stand-up features some of the most confrontational and thought-provoking material you’ll get from any comedian. Haphazard and all over the place maybe, but there’s no way you be entertained by this rising star.
Upstairs At Three and Ten have such a packed calendar it’s sometimes difficult to pick any single show from their diary. But Man Up: Jonny Fluffypunk, on Wed 17, sounds fab. The debut of his brand-new show, Jonny Fluffypunk, stand-up poet and sustainable nihilist is father to a four-year-old son. As compulsive flaneur and retired revolutionary, who is he to shape a young life? Searching for redemption from everyday failure Fluffypunk, an economic refugee from the Home Counties, he now spreads the word as a wandering poet, utilising sock puppetry to provide a coherent voice for anarchy, peace and bicycles.
MINKLEY’S NIGHT OF MIRTH Komedia // Monday 29th April
PATRICK MONAHAN Komedia // Thursday 18th April
Minkley’s Night Of Mirth on Mon 29 features a feast of top comedy talent. Stuart Lee, Mark Watson, Nick Helm and Ed Gamble all head down to the Komedia to raise funds for The Samaritans in memory of Oliver Minkley, a promising young local comedian who died last year. As well as seeing a stellar line-up (for a rather reasonable price) there’s plenty of surprises in store for the giggle-hungry crowds, including an incredibly unique opportunity to bid on an auction of comedy collectables. So it’s a great night, for a good cause. What are you waiting for?
The irrepressible Patrick Monahan comes to Komedia on Thu 18, with a brand new show full of his trademark wit and personal insights. Monahan is a compelling and original funnyman, who hit the big time when he won £100,000 worth of first place on ITV’s comedy realirt competition Show Me The Funny. Being brought up in Middlesbrough by an Iranian Mother and Irish Dad, provides endless hilarious and engaging stories about his heritage. He’s known from steering away from darker and difficult material, ensuring that spending an hour in this Teesider’s company is a positive and uplifting experience.

THE SHEEPDOGS BY GARY MARLOWE IMAGE BY: ALEX KIRZHNER
Following their success at last year’s Great Escape, shaggy haired Canadian rockers The Sheepdogs are returning to Brighton. Ahead of their gig at The Haunt on April 8th, BN1’s Gary Marlowe caught up with singer and guitarist Ewan Currie to find out what they’ve been up to since we last saw them and what we can expect from a band who’ve been nominated for no less than three Juno awards (the Canadian equivalent of our Brits) including Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year. We last saw you in Brighton almost a year ago now. What are your memories of your time here? It was great for us to get over there. Brighton’s a charming town. What was really memorable for us was meeting Gaz Coombs. We’re big fans of Supergrass and it was awesome to meet their lead singer in a Brighton pub! You seem to have been touring non-stop, you guys seem to live on the road, how often do you get back home to Saskatoon? Yeah, for the last two years we’ve been pretty much nonstop on the road. Basically we’ve all learned to live out of a suitcase. So far this year, it’s been a little more relaxed and we’ve been able to get home a little more. We all still live in Saskatoon, although none of us are married or have kids. Growing up, what bands were you into and what kind of musical influences would you say have shaped The Sheepdog’s sound? I guess it was the obvious ones. I was the kid in high school who wanted to listen to the Beatles. I never cared for the radio or following what was popular. I was into bands like Creedence and other old stuff. Did you get the chance to see many bands in Saskatoon? I used to go see local bands and there were some touring acts who came to town. My first gig was seeing the Canadian band Our Lady Peace. They’re from Toronto and they’re still going to this day. With ‘Learn & Burn’ being such a huge record for you, there must have been a lot of pressure to repeat the success with the follow-up. How do you strike the balance between delivering more of the same, without simply repeating yourselves? We had the songs already. Many we were already playing in our live show. So the songs were developed, they just needed to be captured. We know the territory we occupy. We’re not looking to change too much.
The new album was produced by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, how did that collaboration come about? When it came to this record we had some ideas of who we wanted to work with as did our label, but actually it happened by accident. We met Pat through friends at a Tom Petty tribute thing we played at in New York. We were just talking about music and he was really interested in what we were doing, so we said “You should produce our album.” He was way too busy with the Keys, but a couple of months later we texted him and the timing was right, so we headed to a great studio in Nashville and together we cut the album in two weeks flat. How was it working with him? It was great. Pat’s got a real good sense of no bullshit. To me, making good rock n roll music is all about cutting the fat and being a good filter. In the studio, he helped us refine the songs and find the best possible representation of each one. The track ‘Feeling Good’ sounds uncannily like ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ from the Black Keys new album. It marks quite a different sound for The Sheepdogs, is it a sign of things to come? I don’t know if it signals a big change. It’s what we were doing at the time, together with some of Pat’s influence in the studio. We enjoy rock n roll and that’s what our music will always be. You’ve just played SXSW, tell us how that was for you? Man, it was crazy! And it’s getting more wilder every year. This was in fact the fourth time we’ve played SXSW so we’re seasoned veterans! The big change is, alongside all the up n coming artists, you now have some of the biggest stars playing in Austin. Unfortunately we were running around so much ourselves we didn’t get the chance to catch any of those guys! Although we did manage to eat ourselves a whole bunch of ribs! Talking of food, apart from playing, what things are you looking forward to during your time in the UK? Have you picked up any local passions? Man, we love to eat and drink. We’ve tried your fish and chips and I really like sampling the local ales and going to proper pubs! Finally, for those who haven’t had the chance to see you live, how would you describe a typical Sheepdogs gig? Well, I guess it’s a kinda old school show that’s gonna make you want to have a beer and dance with your woman!

unlock his hopeless career or his flagging relationship? A story buried in these walls for over a century? Later in the month at The Studio, on Thursday 18 - Friday 19, is award-winning writer and performer Pat Kinevane. Following his Brighton Festival 2012 performance of Silent, Kinevane returns with another solo theatre piece. This time he sensitively examines the experiences of care home residents. Giving a voice to the voiceless, Forgotten is a unique collage of Japanese Kabuki dance and Irish storytelling. It’s a dark yet deeply poignant and often startlingly hilarious portrait of four elderly characters and the interconnecting threads of their twilight lives. The Nightingale presents Special Relationships, on Tuesday 23, which sees Chris Fogg reading extracts from his recent book. Exploring different meanings of home and belonging, Fogg recalls his own northern, working-class childhood growing up through the 50’s and 60’s, trawling our collective past to shine a particular light on more recent events from both sides of the Atlantic. Also at The Royal is Passion Play on Tuesday 23 - Saturday 27, where multi Olivier Award-winner Zoë Wanamaker takes the lead in this Peter Nichols penned black comedy about love and infidelity. Blending humour, eroticism and duplicity, this modern classic follows James and Eleanor, whose comfortably married world is upended when James agrees to a secret rendezvous with their recently widowed friend Kate. Fib by fib, the affair strips the marriage bare and reveals the illicit desires and hidden passions that lie beneath the everyday facade.

BN1 CHAT’S WITH... Honor Blackman’s life has been as colourful as any of the films or plays she’s performed in. Now she’ll be recounting her experiences in the intimate surroundings of the Komedia on Sat 11 May as part of Brighton Fringe. She can’t talk about all of her life, she tells us, or the show could take forever. ”It’s about my family and through my career, there are even a few songs from musicals I’ve been in.” she says. “It’s a bit of a muchness to talk about yourself for an evening. Eleanor Roosevelt, when she started a speech, sometimes said her mother had said it was very bad manners to talk about oneself. So I’m going to have very bad manners for a whole evening!” There’s certainly a lot to tell. Growing up in London’s East End, she worked as a dispatch rider during World War II, despite being barely old enough to ride a motorcycle. Encouraged by her father she later began earning a living as a stage actress, subsequently breaking into films, but it was a role in a rather odd 60’s TV action show that saw her catapulted into the limelight. The Avengers saw Ms Blackman assume the role of Cathy Gale, a leather-clad martial arts expert. Alongside instantly becoming a pin-up for red-blooded men across the country, she found herself redefining the role of women on television. “Women took great heart from that character, because suddenly we had a woman that was essentially the equal of a man and she could defend herself, so it really did pave the way.” More than being a mere object Blackman delivered a talented female character that did more than scream or get rescued… And the viewing public absolutely loved it. “I wasn’t aware of it to start off with. Apart from mail from men I started to get mail from women too, which was unusual to the extent it happened.” To avoid being typecast, she moved on, landing a part in (arguably) the greatest of all Bond films, Goldfinger. As the iconic Pussy Galore, queen bee of a nononsense, female flying circus, once again she

was playing a capable character that pulled no punches. “Of course in the books she was a lesbian, and it took James Bond to turn her. “It’s wonderful what Ian Fleming thought in those days, I think everyone was unaware that homosexuality was something perfectly ordinary and you’re born with it. It was strange to everybody, all those closets stayed closed.” So what makes Goldfinger such a compelling film? “Because the films were shot more slowly you actually got to know the characters and hate the villains, everything is trying to be The Bourne Identity these days. Speed is the only thing that matters, bur it isn’t. It’s fascinating when you get to follow the characters, like Goldfinger and the man with the hat. It’s fantasy, but only just fantasy,” She was 39 years old when she played Pussy Galore, making her the oldest Bond girl in all the 007 films. Her youthful appearance, active lifestyle and go-getting attitude are all near legendary. Even as a youngster she was an early adopter of Judo, a discipline that she was happy to show off on many occasions. “I’m doing Pilates at the moment which helps me tremendously. I did it (Judo) for about 25 years. I’ve banged down on my spine on a cement floor so many times that my back is pretty crocked.” The 90’s saw her dominate the small screen again as glamorous gran Laura West in the hit sit-com Upper Hand, alongside Joe McGann and Diana Weston. “I think why it was such a success was because we were actually like that. We were very fond of each other, so it was like a family. We laughed so much I don’t know how we ever got anything shot.” Away from the gaze of the camera Ms Blackman has had a long and varied stage career, playing everything from Mrs Higgins in My Fair Lady to Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. Clearly she has a fondness for music, having released several records, even scoring a top five hit with Kinky Boots, a full 26 years after its initial release. More recently she popped up in cult Brit-Horror film Cockneys vs Zombies, repelling an undead horde from a retirement community. All of this brings us to 2013 and her show, Honor Blackman as Herself, which takes the form of a conversation with good friend Richard Digby Day. “Like life… some of it’s fun, some of it’s sad, some of it’s glamorous and some of it isn’t. It’s just my life.” So is there any lesson she’s learnt from such an action-packed career? “Nothing comes by accident and you have to work hard at everything. Is that boring?” By Stuart Rolt www.honorblackman.co.uk www.komedia.co.uk

4 POOFS AND A PIANO
ALL NEW SPARKLIN G & TWIN KLING 4 POOFS AND A PIANO Who’d have thought there’d be four gay men that can sing and dance? The New 4 Poofs and a Piano are coming to the Old Market on Saturday 13th April with a showtune-packed show that promises to be bigger, louder, harder and longer than ever before. Full of camp, irreverent, self-deprecating, high-octane entertainment, these four fruity songsters combine outrageous humour, musical parodies, pop standards and physical comedy with a healthy dose of light-hearted banter. Building on the considerable reputation of the old 4 Poofs (you may remember them from their stint as the house band on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross) they’re now bringing their singular brand of magical musical mayhem and camp capers to a whole new audience. In case you’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing something as wonderful as these fine fellows, then imagine a glittering barbershop quartet in outrageous costumes, mixed with the bawdy tongue-in-cheek
crudeness of an East End knees-up. Now featuring a new line-up, with original member Big Dave Wickenden at the helm, that’ll have everyone from students to the blue-rinse brigade reaching for their Tena Ladies! Just to add to the fabulousness of it all, the legendary Bobby Crush will be joining them behind the piano. There’s a few local connections for this comedy quartet too, Wickenden is from Brighton and sings in the Brighton Gay Men’s Choir, whilst Graeme Clark is known in a few local bars as the marvellous Dame Conny Conway. 4 POOFS AND A PIANO SATURDAY 13TH APRIL THE OLD MARKET TICKETS: £15

LOVE SUPREME JAZZ FESTIVAL
CAMP BESTIVAL
Glynde Place, 5-7 July Tickets: £108/£129.60
Lulworth Castle, Dorset 1-4 August Tickets: £180/£190
Set in the beautiful surroundings of Glynde Place, the Love Supreme Jazz festival has an impressive bill, including the musical genius that is Bryan Ferry, Mercury Prize and rising star Michael Kiwanuka and disco band Chic featuring Nile Rodgers. Add that to an already impressive bill of boogie woogie piano maestro Jools Holland and American jazz star Gregory Porter and you know you’re in for a treat. This jazz festival has been running for more than 20 years and provides a classic jazz bill with a green-field festival experience. A weekend ticket costs £129.60
Probably the most beautiful festival location in the UK, Lulworth Castle in Dorset plays host to Camp Bestival. A family-friendly festival, this year Bestival has been currated by Rob Da Bank and Josie. This year there’s an 80s nostalgia theme, with acts including the disco rogues The Cuban Brothers performing. They join such legends of the era as The Proclaimers, Heaven 17, Kid Creole and the Coconuts and Musical Youth. The 80s DJ legend Nik Kershaw will also be putting in an appearance. Modern legends including I Am Kloot, Billy Bragg, Levellers, Ash and everyone’s favourite romantic, Richard Hawley, are also on the bill. Alongside Rob Da Bank, expect some top DJ sets from the likes of Sasha and Grandmaster Flash, too. There’s even a weekly payment plan, ideal if you can’t afford to pay for the whole ticket at once.
NOZSTOCK Bromyard, Herefordshire 26-28 July Tickets: £95
Nozstock has Russell Howard and Phill Jupitus among its fans, and it’s not hard to see why. Now in its 14th year, this family-run festival attracts some top acts and is keen on participation and contribution from the audience. Built around a farm, as well as outdoor stages there’s a converted cowshed devoted to the best of drum n bass and dubstep from the likes of Tribe of Frog. Acts confirmed for the Orchard Stage include such varied musical luminaries as The Beat, The Strypes and Chas and Dave. Mr Scruff and DJ Yoda are among the Garden Stage highlights. This is a family-friendly festival where everyone is encouraged to get involved.
RED ROOSTER Euston Hall, Suffolk, 13-15 September Tickets: £90 (early bird)
With 6Music’s Cerys Matthews among its biggest fans, Red Rooster brings the best blues, roots, Americana and country to the South Coast. The whole festival attempts to recreate the atmosphere of the American Deep South and the acts are carefully selected to keep to this theme. This year, the line-up includes The Jim Jones Review, Heartless Bastards and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis among others. Even the catering is suitably Southern – Creole and Cajun treats, jambalaya, gumbo and barbecue are all on the menu.

THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY
MEADOWLANDS FESTIVAL
THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY
Glynde Place, 24-26 May Tickets: £95/£48
Mill Hill Fields, Abbots Ripton 25-28 July Tickets: £191
Now in its fifth consecutive year, Meadowland’s Festival is making a welcome return at the end of May for another bank holiday bonanza of music and entertainment. This year, another hearty line-up includes British Sea Power, Ty, bringing his hip hop, lyrical frankness and honest portrayals of everyday life. Laurent Garnier and The Correspondents to name some. The Cosmic Trigger Club is promising a heady brew of psychedelia, disco, hip hop, country & western, and everything in between, in a warped four-hour musical shakedown. If you want a break from the bands, The Otherplace is where to go for sketch acts, comedy, improvised theatre and cabaret acts. New this year, the on-site pub ‘The Hampton Wick’ will be situated on the edge of the woodland arena if you fancy a pub quiz, a game of darts or a quiet pint, and returning for the third year in a row, the pop-up casino, this year in aid of The Rockinghorse Appeal.
One of the UK’s most popular small festivals, The Secret Garden Party is a festival that offers so much more than music. Theatre and spoken word, art and talks are all part of the experience, and the festival is famously built around a theme. For 2013 that theme is Superstition, and all festival attendees (affectionately known as ‘Gardeners’) are asked to explore what this means to them. Acts confirmed include Django Django, James Lavelle, Luke Sital-Singh and the legendary Goldie, with many more still to be announced. For those who enjoy pampering, there’s an on-site spa, while the Soul Fire Restaurant serves restorative Bloody Marys. Image above: © Andrew Whitton

FILM
KIDS & FILM: Cinema Club By Wayne Imms
An interest in film is not just for adults, there are two wonderful opportunities in Brighton and Hove for children to get involved in film and cinema; below Tom Veryzer who runs the popular Kids’ Club at the Duke of York explains what they have to offer, and then we move onto movie making with Paul Light who runs ‘Bite Size Movies’ When does the Kids’ Club take place and what can people expect? Kids’ Club happens every Saturday morning at The Duke of York’s and most Sunday mornings at The Duke’s at Komedia. People can expect so much more than the showing of great kids’ films. Kids’ Club is a regular, affordable family event with creative activities before the film, a weekly raffle, audience interaction from the stage, a free bag of sweets and additional prizes for the best pre-film creation! Children often choose it as the place to have their birthday parties, too, so from time to time we will throw fully catered parties in our bar area after the film! What does your involvement with the club entail? I’m the Kids’ Club coordinator and, as well as ensuring that it runs smoothly, my role is to make Kids’ Club as fun as possible! The activities we do beforehand are always themed with the film itself, whether it is making artwork with pasta for the film Ratatouille, or decorating crowns for everyone to wear for our screening of Tangled. One of my most enjoyable tasks is to buy prizes. I remember presenting a red cape and some vampire teeth to one boy as a raffle prize for the film Frankenweenie. He turned up the following week wearing it! My background is in comedic improvisation and children’s entertaining and so when I get a chance I always do some interaction and/or storytelling, getting kids suggestions along the way – their imaginations never fail to surprise! I always have a lot of fun myself working Kids’ Club, but I couldn’t do it without a team of such multi-talented and friendly staff. In your view, how important is the experience of cinemagoing for children? Introducing children to the power of cinema is an incredible thing. It’s simply not the same as watching TV at home. Kids’ Club provides a weekly opportunity for families to experience the magic of film together. It is very affordable too, at just £1 per person when children have a £4 annual Kids’ Club Membership. The low price means that Kids’ Club is often a lifeline for families on low incomes, so nobody has to miss out. The two cinemas (which people are often surprised to learn is part of the
Picturehouse chain) run Kids’ Club not for profit, but to be part of the community, and as such I feel all the more honoured to work for them. When you were a child, what were your favourite films? My favourite film was (and still is) Back to the Future. Just hearing the theme music makes my heart beat three times faster and I find myself unable to form speech. Funnily enough, that is the film we are showing this weekend! I gather that the Kids’ Club is always very popular, but is there any type of film which seems particularly popular with the audiences? Classics always do well, whether it’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Monsters Inc. Our ‘Kids’ Club Specials’ are also very popular. For Christmas we screened The Muppet Christmas Carol and the cinema was transformed with decorations, music and artificial snow shooting from the balcony, plus a visit from Father Christmas himself! I was dressed as an elf. It was a surreal but wonderful day... Finally, what can be expected during April? On the first weekend of April we are showing Mary Poppins, the weekend after that it’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, then Wreck It Ralph, and then Jasper Penguin Explorer! Here, Paul Light who runs them, tells us about Bite Size Movies’ series of filmmaking courses for children. How did Bite Size Movies become involved in film courses for children? We were originally commissioned by the Court Farm Collective, based in Hove, in 2008 to run two weekends of film workshops with children from the travelling community, or friends of those that had links to it. They went so well that we carried on the workshops but, with an open remit. This means any child can attend and get a grounding in how to make a short film and a music video. From there the project has led to many other kids’ filmmaking courses. The science fiction course you held a while back would have appealed to me if I was a lot younger. What did that actually entail and how did it go? Recently we have been putting on genre-based kids’ film courses. We had a music video one, a junk modelling one and a Halloween course last year. The science-fiction course

was held this year and went very well. Like most of the two day courses, we plan and devise on the first day, then go out and film on the second. The kids interviewed each other in front of the green screen, explaining about their favourite sci-fi films and why. They devised a film called The Incursion, which we filmed in Stanmer Park. It was an action-packed ‘alien invasion versus the military’ story with a twist! The finished film will be screened at the Duke’s at Komedia soon. Tell us about some of the courses you have coming up for children from April onwards? The courses are generally in half term and the summer break. This Easter we’ve got the How to Make a Music Video course again, the Junk Modelling course, where you make models from junk and make a film out of them for the next half-term. In the summer, we have another Court Farm filmmaking course, which is more general in approach and also a three-day documentary film course for kids. Later in the year, we repeat our Halloween course and a new Christmas course. We are thinking of a superhero film course! This may be in the summer, too. How do they differ from the adult courses that you offer and, other than the practical filmmaking skills, what would you say the children gain from taking part? Unlike adults, kids are great, as they don’t worry about budget, or feel constrained by it! They just get on with it. They make films in the same spirit as they play in the playground. That energy transfers to film really well and makes for good, entertaining viewing. With all the courses, we ensure the kids script, storyboard and plan their projects before they start filming, but do try and make sure their ideas are something they can achieve in
the time we have. The idea is that they learn to appreciate the discipline of film making from the ground up. They appreciate how films are made through the creative process to the filming needed to construct their stories. All of the courses are geared as springboards to get kids motivated to making and/or performing in films. Finally, how did you become interested in filmmaking and, as a child, what films were you particularly into? I was lucky to have been raised on a diet of the first run of Star Wars films and given many of the ‘special effects making of’ books that came with them. My prized book however was The making of Dr Who, described how a ‘classic’ Dr Who story was made, from the initial idea, through to script, storyboard and location filming. In many ways, this became the template for the Bite Size Movies courses! I was always into the structure and process of filmmaking and the subject led me into studying drama and writing. I was always into sci-fi and horror films and the energy that went into creating them. As I got older, I realised that reality was just as intense and focused my energy on documentaries, human rights observations and campaigning films, which is now the main stable diet of Bite Size Movies. The kids’ courses are great because they let me explore the more fun and creative side of filmmaking. I always tell the kids: if you’re not enjoying making the film – something is wrong! www.bitesizemovies.org.uk

OUR WAY G N I D N I W TO THE SIDEWINDER The Sidewinder, or the Sidey as it’s affectionately known, is one of Brighton’s true gems. Nestled in a corner of mid Kemptown its size is deceptive. A large space with matching gardens (yes, there are two, including the ‘Tanqueray Temple’) it somehow manages to retain a sense of intimacy. A long-standing patron, I was thrilled by the opportunity to sample the new menu, led by head chef Sam Morton. What immediately strikes me about the Sidey is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Landlord Phil has been running a tight ship since taking the venue on two years ago, and it’s clear his employees want to be there running it with him. No sooner had I asked for a glass of red wine than I was enthusiastically recommended the Saam Cabernet Sauvignon – a mellow yet flavoursome red that warmed me like the first summer sunset. This is a wine I’d be happy to drink all year round. The menu, launched earlier in March, is still in testing phase and consists of a decent though not overwhelming range of British/European quality pub fare. With prices starting at £5.95 for grilled sandwiches, all served on locally baked fresh Ciabatta, and only one dish - the tempting Fisherman’s Board - exceeding the £10 mark, it’s honestly priced food with something to suit most palates. I’m a sucker for a sharing platter (albeit a reluctant sharer) so opted for the Cured Meat & Cheese Board (£9.95) whilst my companion dived right in for the mouth-watering 8oz Chopped Steak Burger (£9.50). Both meals were beautifully presented on wooden boards with portion sizes that we didn’t quite finish yet didn’t feel guilty for leaving. Highlights for me were the thick-cut Chorizo, pungent Sussex Blue and the caramelised

red onion relish – don’t be put off by the dried onion garnish – it’s not straw, I promise! Good citizen as I am, I performed the poison test on my companion’s homemade proper chips and although I was clearly risking my life, went in for seconds… The ruby chard salad was perfectly dressed – neither overly modest nor brazenly naked. The red onion relish is deserving of a second mention here, as it accompanied both meals and also because it’s, frankly, delicious. The burger was well received by my dining partner, although there were mutterings about wanting more bacon. I suspect though that, like me, he’s a bit of a bacon fiend, so I’m not sure this is a reflection on the burger itself. In fact my only recommendation would be to provide better quality sauces. The food delivered, but the standard trio of (probably Heinz/Hellmanns) sauces seemed a little out of place. If you can’t make them yourselves I’d advise going a little upmarket... There’s also a big focus on art and music at the Sidey. Local artists have their work displayed and for sale across the stone walls. Popular DJ nights include the intriguingly named Wang Dang Doodle, Jukebox Hero (think guilty pleasures) and for live music there’s Takeover, which most recently featured Brighton darlings Wildflowers.

THE DIRT WITH MARK EDE
It’s gone noon, I’m here, fully clothed, in bed, trying to stay warm in this ‘Spring’ weather. This has to be some kind of practical joke right? Since when did we have weather like this for the whole month of March? Whose idea was this? I want a government enquiry; I didn’t move to the South Coast to experience this; I want my money back! Meanwhile back at the ranch, it’s another day, another dollar back in music business land. Everybody knows that the old music business models are crumbling but it seems to me that not too many of the people still in the business are willing to acknowledge it. It’s like their power base is crumbling and they don’t want to acknowledge the fact. It’s all ‘you got to get a distributor’ (really? when’s the last time you bought a record in a record shop?) and ‘what you need is a Radio 2 plugger’ (not at a few thousand pounds a shot I don’t?). A broadsheet review and some national airplay may or may not make the artist feel better about themselves and give them something to tell their mum, but is it really gonna make any discernible difference to their career and, more to the point, is it a cost effective way to spend money? Myself, I’m a great believer in the importance of the artist to fan model and the more things that get between that relationship are a) generally going to cost you money and
b) complicate the picture and complicate the situation. Of course, it’s not quite as black and white, or as simple, as that, but i still think the basis model holds true. An artist I admire has a facebook page called ‘their press page’. Why? No one wants to deal with a PR or some other admin, people want to access the artist. The theory whereby artists should be aloof and untouchable is so ‘old school’. Artists have these days to give of themselves in every way which, I suspect, is why twitter and other social media has become so popular. Moreover, the barriers to entry to the music business have never been lower; anybody, literally anybody can be in the music business, and pretty much in any capacity too. Which is part of the problem of course... it’s not just quality control, it’s quantity control which has become the issue. In some ways it’s just a great big hazy fog out there. Does cream rise to the top? Possibly. As long as you can see it through the fog. Till next time, keep it steady Mark. Follow Mark on twitter at @markede1
