APRIL 2014 As it says on the front of the magazine, it’s April. Big news this month is Microsoft’s planned cessation of security updates for Windows XP. Not a big deal, unless you consider 95% of the cash machines on Earth still use this platform. April also means Easter, the best weekend of the year. It’s so unpredictable the exact date changes every year. How crazy is that? But before we all head out on a four day bender, we should stop for a minute to consider the true meaning of this celebration. Things like rabbits, gross consumption of chocolate, superrandy Earth goddesses, Steve McQueen trying to jump a fence on a motorbike, and a hippy getting nailed to a tree… just for telling everyone not to worry too much. Obviously he’d invested heavily in Bitcoins, or camels. He had little time for money lenders, I hear.

The iconic Brighton Big Balls makes a welcome return to our beaches on Sun 11 May. This mad-cap fun event sees competitors racing over the pebble beach and groynes (mind those groins!), whilst all the time carrying two large red 14” inflatable Balls under each arm. This charity stumble (sorry Run) is in aid of Cancer Research UK who direct all funds raised towards Prostate, Penile and Testicular cancer support and research. Hence the strap-line “How big are your Nads Lads? Each entrant is given a race number which is also written on their balls. They have to finish with their own balls in their arms. Absolute carnage ensues as so called “mates” boost each other’s balls beachward. Try finding your balls again amid 800 other balls blowing around a blustery beach! To ensure a full farcical value to this serious race; each beach is also home to a ridiculous obstacle. Who can forget those boxing gloves on 8’ long poles deftly welded by the comedy Ninjas in 2013? Or the hand/oil dip beach (now carry those slippery balls) or the water-balloonbombs which cooled many a competitor! But please don’t laugh, this is a serious race. Many more local businesses have shown their might in 2014 thus providing a plethora of anarchic and ridiculous obstacles for your pleasure!

MANIC STREET PREACHERS
THUNDERBIRD GERARD Bermuda Triangle // Sun 6 April
MANIC STREET PREACHERS Brighton Centre // Wed 9 April
New York artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Thunderbird Gerard moved to England at the age of 20. Cut off from his family, he suffered years of poverty and homelessness. A chance meeting with video director CC Steinmetz, and a publishing deal with BMG, took Gerard to Berlin where he began to musically document his life. After stints supporting Macklemore vs. Ryan Lewis on tour, he’s resumed work with collaborators DJ Stickle, Dan Dare (Wiley, Giggs), Paul White (Danny Brown), Olugbenga (Metronomy) and Two Inch Punch, honing his ‘ill wave’ sound, a mix of hip hop and soul. This is happening.
Having shed their early androgynous punk imagery, they now dress in garb more befitting the elder statesmen of rock status. Still as socially conscious and dynamic as ever, they’re been smashing it out for nearly 28 years now, not bad for a band that joked they’d going to split up after releasing the acerbic double LP – “Generation Terrorists”. Eleven Top 10 albums and fifteen Top 10 singles later (in the UK alone!), they’re still ricking stadiums and arenas around d the world.
SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR Concorde 2 // Mon 14 April
SONS OF KEMET Komedia // Wed 30 April
www.brightoncentre.co.uk Image above by © Alex Lake
With new album ‘Wanderlust’, taking up residency in the top ten, Ms Ellis-Bextor is getting out on the road again. Co-written, produced and arranged by acclaimed singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt, the album was recorded in a London studio in just two weeks with a tightly-knit group of musicians and friends. Newly invigorated as an artist, she’s once again finding her feet after a dalliance with dancing on Strictly last year. It seems that the live circuit is suiting her, as we’re hearing good things about her live shows. So we’re not even going to resort to a cheap ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’; gag. www.concorde2.co.uk
Get those dancing shoes on! Sons of Kemet are coming to Brighton… A quartet featuring a sax/clarinet, tuba and two drummers, they mix Ska, Caribbean and Rastafarian influences with a free-jazz sensibilities. After an amazing debut album ‘Burn’ seeing some good sales last year, they went on to win Best Jazz Act at the MOBO Awards and The Arts Desk’s Album of the Year. The band’s live shows have proved downright incredible, how long will it be before the entire nations getting down to their compelling rhythms. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton www.sonsofkemet.com

BN1 CHATS WITH...
RALF KOLLMANN - MOBILEE Mobilee Records - The German soccer team of club music. BN1 spoke to label supreme Ralf Kollmann, ahead of their showcase at Brighton Music Conference. House and Techno is undergoing a resurgence in the UK. A new generation is slowly turning to the deeper, more intelligent tunes. Is the music getting better again, or are people just getting more clued up? Electronic Dance Music and its connected club culture became the dominating player in nowadays youth and pop movements. The recent success of DJs like Jamie Jones, Solomun, Seth Troxler and Ricardo Villalobos has helped to get the new generation’s attention. This had a big effect on the UK dance music scene and media landscape. There will probably never be a completely new thing popping up; it’s just moving tiny little steps in this or that direction. It’s all completely mixed up and we are all using new channels to find and experience our favorite music. MTV or radio is not
discovering the new music trends for us anymore. Even a magazine like Mixmag is just following trends as things are accelerated on FB and YouTube. Everything is happening in a more chaotic way in a digital social media world. Beside the pure music the clubbing experience itself became more important. It’s more a common feeling, a moment and specific constellation the modern rave culture is bringing together. That´s the smart and advanced aspect of the actual dance music evolution – not the tunes got more intelligent! What’s the best thing about setting up mobilee? Well, generally if you are running your own business you have a lot of freedom and the chance to create something on your own. We like to share experiences with the younger artists, as we already had a career before we started the label. It’s great to see things growing, and it makes us proud if mobilee artists have a big success and finally go their own way like Pan-Pot these days.
NEW Roland is reintroducing a whole range of vintage tech at BMC. Is this something that’s set your heart racing, or are you more into single box production? A whole generation of producers grew up on software based studios with all the pros and cons to it. Affordable vintage technology can give some new inspiration to the “plug in based everybody using the same boring sounds” situation and help understand how the process of sound synthesis really works, without using a mouse! I am really looking forward to it and hope Roland will have a successful launch and others are following. Could you survive without technology? I am pretty addicted to the digital world. Sometimes I feel like a slave of my digital environment. It makes me more passive, instead of reacting actively. We’ve just renovated the whole mobilee office and studios, to have an extra meeting room without laptops next to each other. But after an hour we all get nervous, get withdrawal symptoms and need our fix... email and Facebook check! Haha! Have you been to Brighton before? Did you have a good time? I’ve been in August ´99 for the solar eclipse across Europe. I was working for an event marketing agency and we organized a party for the launch of Lynx Voodoo at a secret location between Brighton and Stonehenge with Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox and Faithless. Good memories! I am also familiar with the whole Big Beat and Beach Boutique thing at the legendary Concorde of course and know for sure that Brighton is a beautiful place. I wish I could stay a week and explore the area a bit more.

Abelard begins a wild affair with his brilliant student Heloise, producing a child out of wedlock. Abelard is already on thin ice with the church over his contentious views and now his enemies have the perfect pretext to destroy him. Soon enough their affair becomes the scandal of the age…
Demonised by the censors when it was first published in 1850, Turgenev’s ‘A Month in the Country’ had to wait over 20 years to be performed. Now Brian Friel’s adaptation of this timeless comedy combines all of its familiar themes of youth, freedom and love with a contemporary twist.
With dynamic contemporary language, stunning costumes and terrific live music, this funny, passionate and legendary love story makes history burst into life.

A one act piece, with people cramped together annoying each other, this Samuel Becket play is Marmite in theatrical form. Three generations, trapped together with nowhere to escape, attempt to make sense of their co-dependant situation. Many will view this black comedy as a statement on the isolation self-centeredness brings with it. Whilst as many will ask: “Why exactly are those people in dustbins?” As with nearly all of Emporium’s productions, whether you love it or hate it, you’ll undoubtedly leave talking about it.
The Marlborough Theatre
Travelling to the UK specifically for this run, Leo propels one performer on a mindboggling journey. Taking the form of a solo physical theatre piece, it challenges our sense of gravity and reality through the clever interplay of superlative acrobatic performance and high-tech video projection. From the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to New York, Moscow and Hong Kong, this is a one-of-a-kind example of physical theatre that defies theatrical convention as adeptly as it does the laws of gravity. Universally appealing to adults and children alike, this is the funny, intriguing and moving story of Leo.
Chris has lovingly repaired his family’s Triumph Herald Estate so that he can drive it from his childhood home in Braintree to Rome via Turin- where this quintessentially English car was designed.

Partly an investigation into his father’s time as soldier and partly a collection of musings on consumerism, the show brings together car mechanics, a road trip, dictators and the fetishisation of possessions. This solo performance utilises old photos, new film and surprising mechanical objects.
Theatre Royal A quintessentially English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth shattering formula. Agatha Christie’s first and only play featuring her most famous character Hercule Poirot, played here by the great Robert Powell. The play explores the potent brew of despair, treachery and deception that ravages the estate occupants. Can the inquisitive Belgian work it out? The Future Is Unwritten presents Paul Hodson’s upfront and comic play about passion, patriotism and ‘Englishness’.
It’s 1623 and John Heminges returns to his house with a precious package- the first edition of William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. As he starts to read through the plays the memories come flooding in; back stage intrigues, the many performances, successes and disasters and above all the importance of preserving the writings of a genius.
John Osborne has spent the past twelve months visiting British seaside towns, in preparation for On The Beach, and this show documents a lunchtime walk along one such location. It charts the lives, loves, hopes and nostalgia that can all found down on a typical British beach. An indie musical about memories, first-loves and growing up, The Islanders was written by Amy Mason, Eddie Argos (lead singer of Art Brut) and folk star Jim Moray. In the late nineties, a teenage couple swap their bedsit for a holiday on the Isle of Wight. Thirteen years on, they try to make sense of an island, a holiday and a much-forgotten relationship.

THE GREAT ESCAPE FIRST LOOK

MNEK
The Great Escape Festival (TGE) returns to Brighton on Thu 8 – Sat 10 May 2014. A massive showcase of new music, with 400 up and coming bands playing in 35 of the city’s venues, it’s a tough task choosing what acts to catch in all their live glory. In an effort to ease your bewilderment as the choices available, we’ve spent a significant amount of time checking out each band on the bill. So, some sore ears, a couple of strained relationships and a couple of late nights later, we’re ready to give you a quick guide to what’s red hot at TGE2014.
TGE 2014, as ever, is about showcasing the stars of tomorrow, so a trip to UK R&B heavy-hitter Joel Compass’ show is a must, as is catching Ella Eyre when she supports Kelis at Brighton Dome. Rae Morris will be making the trip down the A23, just a week after the release of her new single Do You Even Know?
If contemporary music is all about the vocals and lyrics for you, then catch light-hearted Courtney Barnett dissecting her day to day life. The blues-soaked talents of Bristol’s George Ezra will be a festival highlight, as should 25-year-old Canadian pop princess Kiesza
Other hot picks for the festival are, London-based folktinged rockers Dry The River, Doves member Jimi Goodwin’s vital vibrant brand of Brit-rock and Woman’s Hour, an atmospheric four-piece dealing in perfect pop/rock tinged with electronica. Or you could sample some vital post-punk sounds from These New Puritans to get the blood pumping, a little more sedate will be “enigmatic alt-pop” act Adult Jazz. No matter what your tastes, there’ll be something for you at TFE2014, the limits being your motivation to fond what suits you.
Anyone up for shuffling around a dance-floor should certainly check 2013 Mercury prize nominee Jon Hopkins and his melodic electronica. Duke Dumont producer MNEK is also a good bet. Only aged 19 he’s becoming one of the biggest players in the UK music industry. Brighton’s own Let The Machines Do The Work will also rocking the house, showing everyone what real basslines sound like.
As with every year, we try to catch any band sporting an unwieldy or ridiculous name. Everyone at BN1 desperately needs to know how much a Hero Fisher catches, what is The Trouble With Templeton and what does A Plastic Rose smell like? We know for certain that French For Rabbits is “lapin”, but our pick for this year is the wonderfully titled - The Bony King Of Nowhere. See you there!
There’ll be a few shows at TGE with queues stretching into the next time zone, but there’s good reason for their popularity. Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. certainly fits into this.
You can check out more details on the festivals mindbogglingly large line-up at: www.greatescapefestival.com
Let’s say you have a penchant for some quality Indie rock, then you’ll find Wild Beasts, Canada’s PS I Love You and Augustines should all sort you out perfectly. So where will all the hipsters be hanging this year? A safe bet is Years and Years’ show. Fronted by actor Olly Alexander, the electro-popsters have been thrilling those in the know recntly. As have Jungle, the London-based funk/soul neighbours, who return to Brighton with their modern twist on everything that’s great about 70s music, and Brooklyn trio Wet’s sultry minimal pop, But the best show the cool kids will be populating is that of pesky trouble makers Fat White Family. Expect a rock and roll spectacular…

Few artists have enjoyed such a tumultuous rise to the top as Ella Eyre Since we last spoke back in November, things have really taken off for you, it’s been quite a whirlwind. How does it feel? It’s quite something. When I think back to the Naughty Boy tour, it’s not that long ago, yet so much has happened to me since then. It’s both flattering and exciting. Firstly, to release my own stuff and that people are actually excited to hear it. How are you coping with all the pressure? It’s quite weird really. It’s not something you can ever prepare yourself for. I really enjoy the interviews. It’s lovely to be able to talk about what happened over these amazing couple of months. You’re in LA right now, what are you up to over there? I’m not doing anything special, I’m just visiting the US label to discuss my releases over here. I’ve not been doing any radio or any promotional stuff. It’s just been lots of meetings…and lots of sushi! Your BRITs performance with ‘Bastimental’ was one of the highlights of the show. When did you find out you’d be performing? I remember my manager calling me and mentioning that there might be a possibility of me being involved. From that moment, I was just praying that it would happen. The BRITs is such a significant award for me. I went to the BRIT school and two years ago we went on a school trip to the awards and saw Adele sing ‘Someone Like You’ and Jessie J pick up the Critic’s Choice award. So for me to be a part of that this year, having attended the event as a student, was just phenomenal. And that was even before I got the award. That just added to the whole magic of the day. It still doesn’t seem real!
The 19-year- old BRIT school graduate from West London has sung on some of the biggest hits of 2013 and was runner-up in both the Sound of 2014 poll and the BRITs Critic’s Choice. We first spoke to her when she was touring with Naughty Boy, now a month before she returns for a headline slot at The Great Escape Festival, BN1’s Gary Marlowe caught up with her in LA
What was it like being onstage in front of that audience and knowing millions of people were watching round the world? Just to be there was phenomenal and really, really, exciting. But playing with the Rudimental boys and Bastille was overwhelming. Not only to play, but to come away with a BRIT! Last week we spoke to Tinie Tempah and he raved about your performance on ‘Someday (Place In The Sun)’. How did that collaboration come about and what was it like working with Tinie? Do you know, when I recorded those vocals I didn’t actually get to meet him. At the time I was a huge Tinie Tempah fan and, would you believe it, a couple of days later they told me Tinie wanted me to sing on one of his tracks. I went into the studio with the producer and we just experimented. This was very early in my career. I heard nothing for ages and then found out he’d chosen my vocals to be on the opening track of his album. What about your own album? How is it going and when do you think it will be released? It’s going very well. We’re now in the final production stages. Hopefully, it will be out around September time. It’s so exciting for me. I’ve been writing this album for the past three years, so it feels like a huge journey. Writing it has been a bit like writing a diary and I look back at the times I’ve written these songs and reminisce about the experiences I’ve had. I’m really looking forward to playing some of the new songs on the tour. It’ll be like giving people a preview of the album.
You’re back in Brighton at the Concorde 2, but of course this time you’re headlining. What can we expect and what will it be like stepping up from support to headline? For me, it’s going to be really daunting actually. Up until now I’ve either done a short support set or come on as a featured artist. Now that I’m headlining my own show, it’s going to be phenomenal to play to fans who’ve bought tickets specifically to see me. That’s just so exciting. I can only hope that they’ll enjoy what they see. Our live show will be a lot rockier than people might expect and I’m going to give a big performance.
BN1 CHATS WITH...
ELLA EYRE
Ella Eyre plays The Great Escape Festival - Dome on 10 May
And then in May you’re back in Brighton for The Great Escape, playing with Kelis at the Dome. That’s going to be huge. How exciting is that? Yes, I can’t believe I’ll be back at the Dome having played there last year with Bastille. I’m just so fortunate to get to play there twice in a row. And this time to be supporting Kelis. I’m such a fan. I just can’t wait to see her in the flesh and see her play. And, hopefully, get to meet her. With all these shows coming up and lots of festivals during the summer, your mind must be turning to what to wear. Are you choosing your own wardrobe or do you now work with a stylist? It’s a mixture. I’ve got a lot of ideas about clothes, but I’m not going crazy - I’m not having designs made for me. Right now there seems to a huge wave of British talent emerging all at the same time, many of whom are enjoying big success in the States and elsewhere. Why do you think this is happening?
I’m not sure. I think British music right now is really exciting. We seem to be embracing vocals again. And people are really appreciating great vocalists. That’s why new artists like John Newman, Sam Smith and Hannah Reid from London Grammar are getting so much attention and doing so well, because their voices are unique. Finally Ella, any thoughts on who might be next on the list? I have to say Jake Isaac, not just because he’s going to be supporting me on my tour, but because I love his voice. I think he’s destined for big things. Ella Eyre plays The Great Escape at the Dome on 10 May Follow her on Twitter at @ThisIsElla Photo by © Gary Marlowe ‘Images Out Of The Ordinary’

LIKE RABBITS – LOST DOG & LUCY KIRKWOOD
Thu 15 May, 8pm Dome Concert Hall

McCandless will be talking about his popular website and his bestselling book ‘Information is Beautiful’ while discussing the huge potential of visualised information to help us quickly understand, navigate and find meaning in a complex world.
Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s short story ‘Lappin and Lapinova’, this intimate and quietly devastating new work for two performers was co-commissioned by Brighton Festival. One night in a city a man and a woman meet and have sex and fall deeply in love. Each night the lovers slip away from reality into a world existing in their shared imagination. What begins as a game, soon becomes a battleground, and the couple hurtle towards a tragedy of the saddest, most ordinary kind.
NO ONE OWNS THE LAND - HOUSE 2014 Sat 3 – Sun 25 May (Thu – Sun only), 12pm – 6pm Regency Town House, 10 Brunswick Square A unique project where notions of migration, cultural identity, displacement and their relevance to contemporary society are explored by four thought-provoking artists. Their works include film, digital technology, photography and sculpture and are sited at locations across the city.
CATCH-22 - NORTHERN STAGE Tue 13 - Sat 17 May, 7.30pm Matinees Thu 15 & Sat 17 May, 2.30pm Theatre Royal Brighton Joseph Heller’s explosive satire on the absurdities of bureaucracy has been cult reading for 60 years. PEACHES CHRIST SUPERSTAR Mon 19 May, 8pm Theatre Royal Brighton This Brighton Festival exclusive sees the whole of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ performed by one woman, accompanied by a single piano. Peaches exchanges her usual shocking antics and provocative props for emotional and dramatic power, as she sings each of the nine principal roles, whilst still building upon the opera’s own brand of subversiveness.
During the closing months of World War II, Captain John Yossarian is trapped in the illogical cycle of an inescapable war. As he and his fellow airmen struggle to keep hold of their sanity and their lives amidst the madness of military reasoning, Yossarian is stalked and thwarted by the merciless Catch-22.
SAFE HOUSE - METRO-BOULOT-DODO Sat 17 May, 9pm Hove Park Co-commissioned by The Brighton Festival, this World Premiere is a spectacular outdoor performance which begins with a race through familiar streets, before arriving at a particular mysterious house. Using large-scale projections, stunning aerial displays and dramatic visual effects, ‘Safe House’ explores the emotional space that exists between a house and a home. The performance comments on local ideas of home and is an emotionally engaging narrative which follows one individual’s efforts to find their own home.

NEW TO CINEMA The Double – 4 April Starting to shed his ‘Moss’ mantle and firmly establishing his director status is Richard Ayoade as his new film ‘The Double’ is released this month. Based on the novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, this comedy film stars Jesse Eisenberg as Simon James; a lost and lonely man nearly driven to madness after his life is overtaken by a more confident and assertive doppelganger. ‘The Double’ also stars Mia Wasikowska as Simon’s love interest; Sally Hawkins, Wallace Shawn and now Brighton local Noah Taylor. Ayoade’s previous work ‘Submarine’ was a big hit with its audiences so let’s hope ‘The Double’ follows in its footsteps.
Noah – 4 April Waiting to wash you away is a movie of epic proportions by director Darren Aronofsky with his adaptation of the biblical story of ‘Noah’ and his tremendous ark. Ari Handel - who previously collaborated with him on The Fountain and Black Swan - helped Aronofsky to develop this script about a simple man who sees visions of an apocalyptic flood and takes drastic steps to protect his family. Starring Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone and the infamous Russell Crowe as Noah, expect nothing but a downpour of god’s wrath and some contemplative acting.
The Raid 2 – 11 April This month, director Gareth Evans has very kindly given us a sequel to The Raid: Redemption; a massively popular non-stop Indonesian action film that took place solely in a tower block. The Raid 2: Berandal – meaning ‘Hooligans’ – sees Iko Uwais reprise his role as Rama and this time, he must protect his wife and baby by going undercover to stop the corrupt politicians and policemen who control the dark Jakarta underworld. Enjoy the same calibre of action sequences that made the first film such a hit, but with the benefit of a more complex plot.
Transcendence – 25 April Many people may know Wally Pfister for his incredible cinematography and long-time collaborations with director Christopher Nolan on films such as Inception, The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy. This month Pfister makes his directorial debut with the science fiction thriller Transcendence. Johnny Depp stars as Dr. Will Caster, an obsessed artificial intelligence researcher who is determined to create a machine that holds sentience and collective intelligence. Transcendence also stars Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Hall as Caster’s wife and fellow scientist. Written by Jack Paglen with Christopher Nolan taking an executive producer role.

FILM
JUMP START PRODUCTIONS BY WAYNE IMMS
Jump Start Productions is a Brighton-based film company formed in 2006 by Jamie Patterson and Nathalie Grace. The word has increasingly been spreading about their work locally and beyond, so we got Jamie talking about his ambitions and influences. How did Jump Start Productions come together and what were your aims? I set up Jump Start for my first feature film, Swimming in Circles (shot in four days for £100) and it finally premiered at the Marlborough Theatre. Since deciding to work with Nathalie Grace, we’ve never really looked back. We wanted to make low budget features with new talent; writers, directors, actors, etc, like an independent studio, financing a number of different films a year. Give me an idea of some of the highlights Jump Start has been responsible for. We made a film called City of Dreamers which actually won Best Feature at the Madrid Film Festival. It was even more exciting as we beat a film which starred Orlando Bloom with a much bigger budget than us. It comes out here this year. Another highlight is Daisy, about an aging porn star shooting her last film in Ibiza, shot in four days for next to no money. It was personal to me because it took nearly three years to get off the ground and got great reviews. Tell us about Home for Christmas, a feature that you currently have on the go. Based on a book by Cally Taylor, it’s a Brighton-set real feel good film, telling the story of Beth Prince; a girl who’s never had a guy tell her they love her. It hits all the Rom-Com buttons, but has a lot of originality and charm, and that’s what made it appeal to me. Nathalie brought me the book. I’d only actually read two books before; The Wind in the Willows and a Tarantino biography. I’m a slow reader but managed to read the whole book in a week. I pictured the whole film in my head and on April the 22nd I can bring it to life, as that’s when we start shooting. We have an amazing cast and crew on board, including Skins actress April Pearson. I’m a fan of hers and always wanted to work with her. It’s out at Christmas and we’ll take it on tour round every Picturehouse cinema. It’ll be multi-platform, on DVD, Blu-ray and Video on Demand. There’ll be a soundtrack with loads of unsigned artists.
Do you have any ethos or principle that runs within your work? We try to make the best possible film every time. I’m not a fan of short films- with today’s technology, there’s no reason for filmmakers not to make features instead. You can learn more making the world’s worst feature than the world’s best short. You can also make a lot more money! Some say you shouldn’t do this for the money, but try telling that to your investors. It’s important to respect the business side and that’s something we learnt since City of Dreamers. What filmmakers do you especially admire and who may have inspired you? I admire so many. At the top is Kevin Smith. Clerks made the idea of being a director realistic. It doesn’t look the prettiest but that doesn’t matter because it entertains you. I’ve always carried that into my films. Others are Ed Burns, Martin Scorsese, Ben Wheatley and James Cameron. I think Titanic is the most beautiful film ever shot; it’s a masterpiece. My folks inspired me. They’ve always supported me in whatever I do and are the first to buy tickets for my films. I’m very lucky to make them proud with every film I make. What does Brighton mean to you, as a place to live and for its filmmaking community? It’s one of the world’s most magical cities; it’s up there with Paris. It has so much charm and character. When I was a kid, I thought I was going to live in LA and I was lucky enough to spend time there in 2012. As much as I loved it, it wasn’t Brighton. There’s a lot of talent here and some brilliant actors and directors. I believe there needs to be more support from the council and better funding opportunities, but hopefully that will come over time. Brighton has everything you could want as a director.

BANG BANG BURRITO
@ SIDEWINDER Sometimes I like to imagine what it would be like to have the life of one of those annoyingly healthy people. You know the type- they go for a gym session before work, munch on celery when they get hungry and spend their free time planning their next bike ride/swim/mountain hike. I would most certainly be slimmer and healthier, but would I be happier..? I doubt it. The reason being is that for me happiness is great booze, great company and great food. I’m sure this foolhardy attitude would have some squirming in their lycra, but to steal the seminal final words of Rhett Butler ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.’ With this wild abandon pulsating through me, I could practically feel my serotonin levels increasing as I made my way towards The Sidewinder, and the Mexican food that awaited me. The Sidewinder is one of those pubs that you can enter with the best intentions of a swift pint after work, yet find yourself leaving hours later, merrily clasping the arms of new mates. Perched inconspicuously at the top of St James’s Street, it is all warm woods, mis-matched chairs, art on walls and naturally cool; my favourite sort of Brighton boozer. It has also got one of the largest and nicest outdoors areas I can recollect - a space I’ve been assured is going to house some pretty awesome BBQs come summer time. To add to my delight on arrival I was informed Bang Bang Burrito has recently taken over the kitchen so it seemed only right to order a Mexican-themed drink, and that came in the form of a pretty spectacular Margarita (£4). Strong, salty yet refreshing, I supped away and had a good ol’ look at the menu. Matt Young, the brainchild behind the Sidewinder’s Mexican flavour, was so ridiculously passionate and knowledgeable about the food, I half expected him to pull out a poncho and guitar any second. We started with the Nachos Platter (£5.95) and the Chicken Flautas (£3.95). The nachos were hand cut tortillas (none of that out-of-the-packet nonsense here) and laden with all the beautiful stuff you expect: sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheese and jalapenos. This was, quite simply, a nacho experience unlike any other, and evoked a feeling of anger at all the shoddy excuses for the
Chicharrón
dish I’d had in the past. The flautas - literally meaning ‘flutes’ in Spanish- were filled with succulent pieces of chicken, and accompanied with an astonishingly flavoursome and tasty homemade Chipotle sauce. Next we sampled a couple of ‘bar snacks’, however labelling them as such does them a massive disservice. The Cactus Leaves (£1.95) were gorgeous, and carried with them the sort of flavour of Padron peppers. Then there was Chicharrón (£1.95)… oh the Chicharrón! Imagine a pork scratching that still has chunks of pork clinging to it. There’s quite a long process or curing the pork overnight, then braising, then presumably adding a touch of magic dust, because quite simply these little meaty snacks were one of the nicest things I had ever tried. Yes, ever! We followed this with The Bang Bang Tasting Platter (£5.95, pictured), a great way to sample all the meats which make Mexican food some of the tastiest there is. Within the platter you get a generous pile of chicken, pulled pork and brisket, some floured tacos, sour cream, cheese, lettuce and three salsas ranging from mild to ‘damn that’s so hot I better order another margarita’. As expected, based on the previous food delights, the meats were exceptional, which made sense considering the arduous process of slow-cooking, marinating, adding spices, herbs, chilli, then hand picking/pulling. To finish we opted for what else, but Churros (£4.95). Fried sticks of doughy-cinnamon loveliness, with a chocolate dipping sauce; my waistline didn’t thank me, but my taste buds did. What marks out The Sidewinder’s food, apart from the remarkably cheap prices, is the sheer care and attention that goes into every dish. It is Mexican food of the absolute highest order, and gives me possibly one of the best reasons I’ve ever had to laugh in the face of the celery-munchers. ALCAMPO LOUNGE
Lounging at Alc a Al Campo, part of the Loungers group, sees its restaurant nestled neatly on Brighton’s London Road. Once a thoroughfare lined with 99p stores and charity shops, new development sees it slowly transforming into a new hip and happening area. Loungers’ original motivation was simple - its owners wanted somewhere decent to drink in. It was never meant to be a place to go for food, which apparently started as a happy accident. First opening in Bristol, hometown to the owners, they’ve over 30 outlets nationwide now, still managing to maintain that local independent vibe. Wandering into the positively lively Lounge, yearning to be fed and watered on a Friday evening, it feels like the rest of Brighton has the same idea. The concept is simple - order your food and drinks at the bar. Yes, “a bit like Wetherspoons!” I hear you shout, but I promise you it’s very different. The decor is quite the eclectic mix of retro portraits and odd shaped mirrors, together with mismatched leather chairs and exposed ceilings. Kicking off proceedings with a perfectly mixed Boodles gin and tonic and with my foodie companion choosing an ice cold Brooklyn lager (£4.35), we sat at our table taking in the bustling atmosphere. The clientele was nicely varied, ranging from perfectly groomed twenty-somethings (with handbag dog in arm), paired with hipster males adorned in plaid shirts alongside middle aged couples. After a well-timed break, our mountain of food arrived. With eyes bigger than our bellies, we felt the challenge ahead of us. Ordering from the menu was tricky, where at one point I was almost tempted to order from their all day brunch menu
mpo
and go for the Baked Ham, Spinach and Poached Eggs... with its special twist of truffle and swish cheese sauce… who wouldn’t?! Carefully eyeing up the classics, which ranged from Mac and Cheese, Chicken and Prawn Tambalaya, Rib Eye Steak ‘n’ Chips I really felt spoilt for choice. But instead I ordered from the tapas menu (£3.25 each or 3 for £8.75), choosing the Patatas Bravas together with smoked garlic and wasabi aioli, Spanish Chorizo which was succulent and tender bathed in red wine, perfectly grilled halloumi with peppers and courgettes together with rose harissa sauce, Sweet Potato Falafels and uber tasty Mini Mozzarella Arancini Balls. All of it washed down with a perfectly chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc. My guest chose from their extensive burger menu, opting for the ‘Hero Burger’ (£8.95) which consisted of 6oz of tender and perfectly seasoned chuck steak served in a brioche bun, together with chorizo, mature cheddar, fried red onion, chimichurri chipotle mayonnaise and hand cut chips. Served to us with a friendly smile was a very helpful staff member, who seemed happy to be part of the experience. Sadly we left no room for dessert, one of the few times I’ve been defeated so instead we choose cocktails to bring closure to the pleasant dining experience. A great experience, good vibes and great food... what’s not to love? BY BEE ADAMIC Alcampo Lounge 84-86 London Road, Brighton, BN1 4JF

GRAZE BY LUCY HALLETT With winter starting to become a distant memory, I can’t help but think about the approaching summer, which automatically makes me think of holidays. I’ve had some great ones where I would have given my left arm to stay just a couple of days longer, and some not-so-great ones, where I could have been offered a naked tea party with Brad Pitt and I would have still wanted to leave. Reflecting on what has made the good ones good, and the bad ones bad, I’ve realised (much to my dismay) that the company, the setting and atmosphere become almost inconsequential because it is the food that makes a trip really special. I would find it much easier to tell you about the beautiful fish I sampled sitting by the sea in Portugal, than what the actual sea looked like… blue I’m guessing? With that in mind I ambled along to Graze on Western Road, wondering if I was going to sample one of those really special, memorable meals. Walking inside, I was struck immediately by the elegance and beauty of the décor. Opulent gold-framed paintings adorn the dark grey walls. The immaculately laid out tables each have a single purple tulip, and it is hard not to be very much impressed with the attention to detail which helps the restaurant strike a balance between classic refinement and modern sophistication. Our visit was at lunch time, so we were shown two menus; one of which comes in at three courses for £20, the other at three courses for £37, and we decided to opt for the slightly more expensive menu. The lovely Kate, who co-owns the restaurant, explained that they always serve an amuse bouche and bread with the food, and that they strive to provide only the very best of seasonal produce. These high standards mean that the menu changes every two months depending on what’s in season. The bread and truffle butter was sensational, but before I could do too
much of a cat-that-got-the cream impression along came the amuse bouche in the form of a beetroot velouté. Served with a decadent horseradish foam on top, it was amazing that they had squeezed so much flavour out of the humble beetroot. For my starter I went for the Miso Cured Mackerel with Horseradish and Beetroot. I also had a glass of Viognier De Pennautier (£6.50). Presented with exquisite precision and flair, the mackerel was wonderfully fresh and tasty and sat perfectly with the robust horseradish and earthy beetroot. I particularly liked the small beetroot meringues that artfully graced the plate. The wine’s fruity notes complemented the dish perfectly. My dining companion chose the Tarragon Panna Cotta, Home-Made Ricotta, Peas, Girolles and Croutons. This was washed down with an Andre Scherer Pinot Blanc (£7.50). Having never tried a savoury Panna Cotta I was slightly sceptical, but my fears were quickly allayed once I sampled the dish. The rich smoothness of the Panna Cotta was perfectly offset with the crunch of the croutons. The home-made ricotta tasted exactly right, and the little girolles created a marvellously rich jus. The crisp, dry Pinot was, again, the perfect choice. It would be hard to describe the first part of the meal without throwing in words like ‘faultless’, so it was with trepidation and excitement that I waited for the rest of the meal. After the perfect amount of time (because I enjoy being rushed through a meal about as much as I enjoy root canal), our mains arrived. My dining companion’s Salt Marsh Spring Lamb Loin and Sweetbreads with Sheep’s Curd and Sea-Beets arrived looking like a piece of food art. The succulent lamb was so perfectly cooked I nearly ran in and kissed the chef.

The sheep’s curd added an incredibly exciting dimension, as did the sea-beets, cementing my belief that this was food made with vast amounts of skill and panache. Not one to usually choose a healthy main, I was reassured when my Fillet of Gurnard, Smoked Aubergine, Heritage tomatoes, Basil, Quinoa, Dried Beef and Olive arrived looking every bit as attractive as my companion’s. The taste… ahh, the taste. The distinctly Mediterranean flavour of the gurnard, tomatoes and olives worked perfectly with the quinoa. I loved the addition of the wafer-thin dried beef, and I had to try and remind myself I wasn’t in fact sitting on the dock of the bay somewhere. The wines, an Artesa Rioja (£6.50) and a Raimat Chardonnay (£7) again acted as the perfect bedfellows to the marvellous food. I would like to pretend that after my healthy main, I decided to forgo dessert, and start a ten day exercise program, but of course I didn’t… where would be the fun in that? I pretty much salivated when my Banana
Parfait with Peanut Crumble, Toffee Popcorn and Passion Fruit Meringue arrived, and with good reason. The parfait tasted so banana-ery it was astonishing. The passion fruit meringues added the ideal amount of sharpness to contrast with the rich toffee. My companion’s ‘Coffee and Donuts’- Chocolate Pave, Milk Puree, Espresso Ice Cream, Coffee Emulsion and Cinnamon donuts tasted as good as it sounds. The donuts were soft and moreish, while the coffee ice cream was a thing of dreams. It is hard to write about Graze without getting a little over-excited, but good food should be applauded. There is a distinct lack of fine-dining restaurants in Brighton, and I may have hit upon why: for value, ambience, passion and sheer quality, I really don’t see how you can better Graze. I left knowing that I had partaken in a truly special dining experience. Graze 42 Western Rd, Hove, BN3 1JD

THE CREPERIE When someone mentions ‘crepe’ to me, I am whisked back to my youth when summer holidays consisted of trailer tent camping in the South of France with far too many family members. Being the youngest ultimately meant I was forever drawing the short straw as far as sleeping and travelling was concerned. The cramped middle space in the car’s backseat was always my designated throne while the old dilapidated camp bed became my rest place for two weeks. The saving grace of these times – apart from the glorious sun and landscapes, which quite frankly was lost on my deathly pale 10yr old self – was the majestic crepe. Even though my adolescent reluctance to try anything new meant I spent most of the time in France with a cheese omelette for a main meal, a crepe for dessert was something I could get on board with. I mean, what’s not to like? Thin pancakes served with a variety of tasty fillings, usually consisting of lots of chocolate. Now those were what made my holiday special. So when my guest and I visited The Creperie on a fairly warm afternoon in the not so distant past, I thought I knew what I was expecting. Opening its doors to the general public on Shrove Tuesday this year, owner Pete Bradford and The Creperie gang gained instantaneous popularity by trying to break the Guinness World Record for the tallest stack of pancakes and for offering free Nutella and sugar crepes all day to anyone who ventured down. This is what I have come to associate with any type of pancake; super sweet, rich fillings perfect for a naughty treat. As we sat in the bright, fresh surroundings of this restaurant, situated in an ideal seaside location just off the beachfront on Ship Street, we were informed that savoury galettes were to be our dish of the day. Galettes are traditional buckwheat flour pancakes, which can be enjoyed at The Creperie as a light lunch or as a more refined main meal with a carefully selected glass of wine. Pete informs us that all the wine has been sourced from the Jurançon area of France, designed to complement and not overshadow the flavour of the galettes. With a half-litre carafe setting you back just under a tenner, the wine is an affordable way to promote the concept of a quick bite to a more sophisticated evening.
My guest and I were eager to test this notion, sharing a small selection of the galette menu while we sampled the wine collection. Karen Samuel, who was the head chef at Brighton’s Food For Friends for 25 years, prepares all their food with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The fact that The Creperie are proud of their recipes is apparent in both taste and presentation, from the simple but creamy wild Mushroom Medley (£5.95), laced with white wine and crème fraiche to the more Eastern flavoured Sri Lankan (£6.95), a delicately spiced chicken curry dish served with raita and mango chutney. They were all indeed befitting for the galette and the wine chosen, including others inspired from different corners of the world like the Fajita (£6.95) and a more classic bacon and reblochon cheese Crepe De Maison (also £6.95). There were sweet crepes also to be had, which would have made my 10yr old self think she’d died and gone to crepe heaven. Ones packed with chocolate and marshmallows such as the Soft and Mallow (£3.90) and others adorned with bananas, whipped cream and butterscotch like Going Bananas (£4.75). However, as I like to think of myself now as a fully-fledged adult, I chose to partake in a small scoop of refreshing Rose and Lychee sorbet while my guest sampled the smooth Banoffee ice-cream, courtesy of Brighton’s Gelato Gusto who stock The Creperie with their famous ice-cream. A few extra smart decisions and further attention to detail from owner Pete meant he has also enlisted Small Batch as their coffee supplier. If, like me, you thought crepes were only about sweet, sticky goodness then take a little trip down to Ship Street. Sweet, sticky goodness is still a age-old winner but the meal of a light savoury galette and a very likable glass of wine or two is what makes The Creperie all the more special.
