Easter is here, fixed in our calendars with all the empirical certainty of everything else in The Bible. For the less religiously-minded, there’s a growing movement marking the secular holiday of BMFWOTY (pronounced bum-fwot-ee) on the same weekend. It’s a more rational affair, devoid of the mutilation, invisible rabbits and gluttony packed into its Christian counterpart. The core idea is to honour the deluxe-sized weekend by staying up too late, drinking a little too much and getting up to plenty of mischief. It’s a chance to get together with friends, share stories, experience life and be thankful for the approach of summer. Celebrations can take any form – camping, a barbecue, sitting on the beach or even a spot of clubbing. It doesn’t matter, so long as you’re having fun during those four days off. So, happy Easter, and happy BMFWOTY everyone!

Kate Tempest, Brighton Festival Guest Director, is encouraging festival-goers to take part in the inspiring Pay-It-Forward movement. The scheme aims to open up the possibility of celebrating creativity and experiencing the arts to as many people as possible.Those who book tickets now have the option of paying an extra £5 (or any amount of their choosing) along with their purchase. Telling your fellow students you've given up chocolate for Lent when you're a well-known chocoholic is only going to get you one kind of reaction. That kind of no-holds-barred, bellygrabbing laughter. The kind that earns you concerned looks from the barista. You see, we depend on chocolate. It doesn't matter if you weren't that bothered before you went to university. When you're in the library at half past ten at night with an ugly deadline breathing down your neck, Galaxy, Mars and Maltesers soon become your closest friends. In fact, I've now become well known for always carrying some to hand out when someone's about to collapse onto their book on Victorian literature (for the record, only Hershey's will help you then.) But you don't need me to tell you that snacking on chocolate into the early hours of the morning is no good for you. So I decided to make a change, give up the smooth, silky goodness I crave and smash those 40 days like the champion I know I am. I did okay - with a few lapses here and there. And you would probably think after giving myself a break from the sugar I wouldn't feel the cravings as much as I used to. There you would be wrong. I did my time, and now I'm ready to sin again. I'll be in Thorntons if you need me. Just look for the girl with her head under the chocolate fountain.

The Foodies team encourage everyone to be themselves and develop their skills, expanding the local foodie community with a fresh experience and new initiatives each time. It’s an absurd trip through their wild imagination into the deepest, darkest depths of stupidity! S ' AN ER I N BROR C Beige Against The Machine Television I’ll tell you what’s gone right downhill in recent years – Television! Every other show seems to revolve around gardening, Hitler, DIY, cooking or watching people sat in restaurants whining about how difficult their over-privileged lives are. Once the glistening centre-piece of the week’s entertainment, now Saturday night scheduling fills me with less enthusiasm than the prospect of going to the bottom doctor… Back in the old days (when adults grew pubic hair) you’d have a racy comedian, tap-dancing and a song from the lovely Cilla Black brighten up your weekend. Now it’s all shouting, swearing and text voting, with the occasional video clip of an irrational family pet to complete the violation of my mind. Even that lovely Bruce Forsyth has dropped off the box. It was hilarious when he read jokes from an off-screen card and pretended they were his own quips. Now he’s gone, unceremoniously replaced by a blonde woman who seems dead behind the eyes. Perhaps she resonates with her average audience. Gawping blankly at proceedings, these masses only shift when clapping off-tempo to a pop tune or cramming snack food into their mouths. Many aimlessly drone on about ‘making Britain great again’, but are still happy to let their minds slowly rot away, slumped as Ant & Dec’s Any Old Crap mercilessly leers out from a monstrous-sized TV set. The zombie apocalypse has already overrun us.

Martin Reeves proudly assures me, speaking from his studio. After having just returned from a run of festivals in New Zealand and Australia - as well as making a quick stop for a video shoot - Martin Reeves, AKA legendary DJ Krafty Kuts, admits he’s feeling pretty jaded to be back in the UK. He’s been busy preparing for the release of his latest record with Dynamite MC, All 4 Corners - a name inspired by his travels, his discoveries along the way, and what they’ve brought to the music he creates today. “We’ve travelled all four corners of the globe and we love so many different styles of music from hip-hop breaks to drum and bass, to funk to bass music. This should epitomise what we’re doing, where we’re going.” Reeves speaks to me nostalgically of his humble musical beginnings, “I absolutely loved it, down The Lanes in Brighton.” Twenty years ago, in 1997, he owned a small record store where just a few of his long list of loyal customers included Fatboy Slim, Damien Harris and the Skint Records crew. He’d been hanging onto a dubplate he’d cut his debut record on - a trick learned from the big drum’n’bass DJs of the decade. One day Norman Cook stepped into the store and in a bold flash of courage Reeves made the decision to part with his treasure - with no idea just how far that decision would take him. “I cut a little 10-inch - which cost about fifty quid! I thought, ‘You know what? I’m gonna give this to him. He’s such a cool dude and he’s gonna play this way more than me.’” Cook played the record on BBC Radio 1, where the Ministry of Sound caught wind of it and word continued to travel until Reeves signed his first 3-track EP with Ministry,
going on to release a record on Fatboy Slim’s label, Southern Fried. And so, Krafty Kuts was born. Once the ball had begun to roll, in keeping the momentum going Reeves designed his very own club night. If you’ve ever been clubbing in Brighton, you’ll have heard of Supercharged. Still going strong today, this party has graced some of Brighton’s most beloved gone-but-notforgotten venues such as Digital, Audio and The Beach, as well as Concorde 2. “I had an incredibly blessed period of my life stemming out of Brighton just from the fact that I gave Norman the record!” Now one of Britain’s most coveted DJs and producers, boasting two award-winning solo albums, countless EPs and endless remixes (including electronic royalty Justice and Hot Chip), not to mention his own Against The Grain label, Krafty Kuts is back with a bang on his latest record. He’s an artist who loves to work with others, and with a whole host of superstar collaborations on board he’s more excited than ever. Describing how different artists have pushed him to his very limits, he says “I think it brings the best out of me and I think it gives me an opportunity to really discover new flavours and new styles.” Out of Reeves’ most recent collaborations comes legendary hip-hop collective Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na. He laughs, “He’s told me some of the most extraordinary stories. He’s been there, seen it and done it. When we’ve stayed in a really rubbish hotel he never complains. I just think, ’this guy is really real.’”
When I ask Reeves about his writing process, he goes on to describe endless sources of inspiration,
“
I kind of try and vibe off the environment and different things that I’ve seen and heard.
”
Whether it’s hearing something on the radio on his way into the studio, watching a film, or listening to an old hiphop record, he’ll be bursting with ideas and constantly thinking about the next step. He speaks to me about the importance of coming up with fresh ideas and angles and perfecting his work, whether that takes five minutes or five months, “It takes up day and night. There’s no switching off when you’re a DJ.” Krafty Kuts’ latest single Ain’t My Fault featuring Chali 2na and Dynamite MC is slick with tongue-in-cheek political references and a reinvention of his older styles. He describes his newest writing style as “taking a little bit of old flavour and making it new again.” In fact, this was the track that turned it all around when Reeves hadn’t even planned to take the record out on the road. “When we played Ain’t My Fault in Brighton a couple of weeks ago at The Haunt it just went down so well! I mean, this was a Thursday night! It was cold, it was wet, and the place was packed! It just made me feel really proud that I’m still filling out venues in my hometown.” Reeves is clearly a man who sticks to his roots, telling me how he has always felt supported by his hometown crowd and how this is something that always keeps him going. He recalls again the very moment he dropped his new single in Brighton, “Just, the look on people’s faces it can be 200 people, 300 people, 40,000 people – it’s still the same, people are still loving what you’re doing. And it is an incredible feeling to know that people are vibing off the new music that you wrote.” “I’m excited about what the future has to offer,” he says happily, “I’m feeling really blessed.” Reeves is confident All 4 Corners is a record that will bring the fun back into music. In an era where the world is full of stressors, full of politics, full of fear, he admits “It’s quite depressing sometimes, isn’t it?” On All 4 Corners, he hopes current and future fans will hear the record and discover something new - something fun. Describing himself as an upbeat kind of guy, he likes to turn the negatives in his life into positives - but confirms that the strongest emotions often produce the best music. “Reading about Donald Trump and stuff like that all the time, you kind of think ‘Where’s the world going?’ And Brexit… it’s a very topsyturvy world that we live in,” he muses. “Let’s bring the funk back into the world. Let’s give people some good times.’”

Brighton favourites Kudu Blue, known for their ambitious live setups and sellout shows, return this year to blow us away again with their unparalleled blend of 90s trip-hop, 00s garage and every little thing in between. Storming sets with masses of attitude, the four-piece translate their intricate composition into an incredible show, led by effortlessly cool frontwoman Clem’s killer vocal. You’ve never seen a band so in tune with each other like these guys, and with support from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and a whole host of new music to come, Kudu Blue are slowing down for no one.

Lo-fi psychedelic fans: this one’s for you. Pitchfork recently said New Zealand’s Kane Strang “has a gift for pulling diamonds from the rough”, and they’re not often wrong. Drawling and deadpan, Strang has a very modest way about him. His simple and charming melodies dripping with luscious reverb are inoffensive and captivating – like your favourite teenage garage band, wide-eyed and just a-little-too-well put together. Lazily sung lyrics of love and loss render Strang comfortingly relatable. Paired with the slow, languid pace of his 2015 debut Blue Cheese, it’s effortless songwriting like this that’s truly going to take him places.

Punk sure as hell ain’t dead, and it’s bands like Slaves keeping it alive. Formed in Maidstone way back in 2013, we all love a duo who can make their presence known – Slaves are just one who are impossible to ignore. With drums stripped down to just a floor tom, a snare and a couple of cymbals (played standing up, of course), and a bass guitar, Slaves aim to be the noisiest, most viciously British band, channelling the likes of Gallows and Joy Division. The shared vocals are raw, the attitude is relentless and the old school is here to stay.

Fazerdaze is the fresh, fully-formed version of Amelia Murray’s bedroom dream-pop project. Hailing from New Zealand, their music is entirely self-written and produced, coming together to perform as a four-piece. And it’s been a fantastic touring year so far, with UK dates alongside BIG DEAL and even appearances in New York. Murray’s intimate, beachy sounds are a gorgeous blend of light, ethereal guitars, thrumming drum machines and the softest voice to die for. Check out the dazzlingly pasteltoned video for Little Uneasy to see what she’s all about. Trust us: Fazerdaze are a band to get totally lost in.

“We threw a dart at a map, and that’s where it landed,” claims vocalist Ellie Kamio, of the band’s name (A Swedish town). With a melange of influences from Grimes to The Neptunes to Rihanna, Kamio pours sassy attitude like honey over ominous beats, hissing lines like “Let’s bite until our lips are split”. Sälen are a super-chilled trio, breezing through their latest video shot entirely on their iPhones, posing in an 80s BMW. The beats are breezy and glamorous and Kamio’s purring vocal may be sugar sweet, but she won’t let you leave without a bitter aftertaste in your mouth.

Loud and proud Australian four-piece Tired Lion have got a hell of a lot going for them. Beating Tame Impala and Pond to the Best Rock Act spot in Australia’s WAM Awards, taking the stage at both Glastonbury and Latitude, supporting The 1975 and even an incredible signing to Island Records – this train’s not showing any signs of stopping. This tough, raw and brutally honest foursome’s show is set to be electrifying. Enigmatic frontwoman Sophie Hopes brings along her powerful female presence we love so much, bursting into the UK with a 90s nostalgiafilled energy which is difficult to ignore.

Bergen-based singer-songwriter Sigrid Raabe signed her first record deal at the age of just 17. Her moving debut single Known You Forever was instantly playlisted on Norwegian national radio, and following her debut at Bergen’s Vill Vill Vest music conference she was snapped up by Island/Universal Records and begun the journey to record her first album. This girl has got a gentle but absolutely killer voice, owning every track she gets her hands on with an incredible and explosive honesty. If the last year was anything to go by, 2017 is set to be Sigrid’s year.

Manchester-based all-girl quartet PINS return with their stylised blend of dirty garage-pop. They’re touring in support of their new five-track EP Bad Thing, which came out in March. Earlier this year they collaborated with none other than punk veteran Iggy Pop on the hypnotic spoken word track Aggrophobe. Formed in 2011 by lead singer and guitarist, Faith Holgate who wanted to create an allfemale band as a way to “stick a middle finger up to a maledominated industry.” You can see the inspiration from the riot grrrl bands but their influences are far vaster. Merging elements of krautrock, punk and indie with impressive songwriting to create an enthralling part-pop part-punk blend. They tick all the boxes live, remaining aloof and cool whilst energetic and compelling.

Formed in 1992 with their roots in Californian skate-punk. Grandaddy is the brainchild of guitarist/keyboardist/singer Jason Lytle. Having been described as “indie space-rock to neo-psychedelic”, they’ve grown up a lot since the naïve comedic musings of hits like AM 180. New album Last Place came out in March and is their first LP in 11 years. It’s Weezer meets Radiohead; there’s still a hint of comedy, but the songwriting has matured. Lytle’s songwriting abilities are shown off in tracks like the heartfelt and memorable I Don’t Wanna Live Here Anymore and the Beatles-esque The Boat is in The Barn. The show promises to be a journey of fuzzy synth-rock transporting you back to the heyday of American Alt-Indie.

This Belgium based five-piece are not to be confused with the ‘70s New York jazz-funk band of the same name. Settling confidently between cool and serious they are rejuvenating jazz for the modern audience. Taking influence from an eclectic mix including: Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and John Coltrane, they started jamming in an improv-jazz club in Antwerp and have spent the last five years perfecting their unique sound. Combing elements of jazz, hip-hop, electronica and backbeat their sound is incredibly diverse. But despite their vast musical talent they have a modern outlook, embracing all forms of music (they even cover Cyndi Lauper!). This bunch don’t tour the UK often so don’t miss your chance to catch them!

After sharing their poignant new piano ballad, Through Windows in February, the London trio are back with a tenday UK tour. They won the 2015 NME Award for Best Lyric with the wonderful "I'm wearing Win Butler's hair, there's a scalpless singer of a Montreal rock band somewhere" from the song Montreal Rock Band Somewhere. Some trios can struggle a little to match the sound of their recordings live, but these guys are a powerhouse. All three band members write their music and are known for swapping roles both in the studio and live. Embraced by counter-indie culture everywhere and with a sound you’d imagine came straight out of California, their slow grooves would appeal to fans of Mac DeMarco, Real Estate and Kurt Vile.

The Kent five-piece successfully bridges the once cavernous gap between pop and folk. With a reputation for unique and quirky music videos, their live show is nothing short of captivating. Despite remaining folky at heart they are not afraid to push the boundaries of musical purity.
Punk-poet heroes hailing from South London. With a mission to “combine great rock ’n’ roll with politics”, their street-wise sound merges ska, punk, hip-hop and spoken word. Activist and journalist Tariq Ali described their sound as “rough, radical music that should unsettle the rulers of this country.” The King Blues reunited in 2015 citing the unusual inspiration of David Cameron’s government, followed by the album Off With Their Heads, which was initially banned by both Facebook and Apple. Despite this censorship, the title track’s video received over a quarter of a million views on the first day alone. With relentless live energy, lead singer Itch’s ability to rally the audience reflects the likes of Sid Vicious and Joe Strummer.
This renowned English metalcore band hail from the depths of Sheffield. Their recent anthemic single, Silence Speaks features guest vocals from the one and only Oli Sykes (of Bring Me The Horizon.) Forming in 2006 and having been in bands since school they have evolved together and developed a brother-like energy live.
KOMEDIA
Progressing from more traditional roots, their sound has evolved into a mix of melodic folk grooves and catchy pop in songs like Wildfire. There’s even a nod to ‘80s synth pop in tracks like Oh Euphoria. They have been compared to both Bellowhead and Mumford & Sons. With incredibly catchy songs and the finest of songwriting, you would struggle not to be in a good mood after seeing them play.

The release of Silence Speaks sees the band going in a new, slightly political and more mature direction. “Our live shows try to encompass unity with everyone. We want everyone to have a great time and be a part of something cool” says singer, Loz Taylor. Long awaited third album, You Are We comes out on Fri 21 April.

TUES 25 APRIL Catch the young YouTube sensation on his first European headline tour. His recent EP Open Hands and Enemies has received extensive praise and was number one in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart upon release. After four years building up a huge YouTube following he was discovered by the legendary Mick Fleetwood. “Dan’s music is from the heart,” says Fleetwood. “It is genuine blues and Dan is at the forefront of the new wave in British singer-songwriter talent.” His EP has the perfect formula of genuine songwriting talent, youth appeal and fantastic production. Single Moonlight alone is proof that Dan will go far. The viral ballad Made To Love You features soft crooning vocals that would make James Bay proud.
THURS 27 APRIL Mellow British hip-hop artist Rejjie Snow believes in “letting the music speak for itself.” He’s not come out of nowhere, either - his first EP Rejovich came out in 2013 and featured various guest performances, including the incredible Loyle Carner. The 22-year-old rapper was raised in Dublin and still holds his home close to his heart. His laid-back style of intellectual hip-hop fits in the vein of Kendrick Lamar and Earl Sweatshirt. Unquestionably one of the most talented UK rappers of the decade, Snow is not shy to express politics and social issues such as that of deeply moving new single Crooked Cops. Despite his widespread success his music remains honest and original.

Future Islands’ new album The Far Field is out this month, following up to 2014’s hugely successful Singles. Penultimate track Shadows features guest vocals from New York punk icon, Debbie Harry. With their blend of original synth-pop, they’re a breath of fresh air among a sea of safe indie. But they haven’t come out of nowhere. Having been together for ten years polishing and perfecting their sound, they’ve all had years of experience playing and touring in every style of band, from metal to rap. Singer, Samuel T Herring’s deep unique voice with his heartfelt brooding vocals transports you to a simpler time. This is a trip of empowering yet emotional love songs that would make the perfect soundtrack to a coming-of-age movie.

In the last ten years, the dancefloor has greatly evolved from where it started. We’ve moved on hugely - from a DJ with a pair of Technics playing records for hours on end, to expecting something much bigger now. Since the reveal of Daft Punk’s pyramid at Coachella 2006, the industry has not only wanted to compete with it, but to better it more and more. Nowadays, we’re expected not to close our eyes and listen in euphoria, but to stare directly towards the DJ, count to four, and jump with elation when the ‘drop’ kicks in. In Brighton we’re lucky to have such an expansive and expressive nightlife scene, but we almost take all our fantastic DJs and live artists for granted. Unfortunately, with so much talent around there isn’t always a space for artists to be discovered. Robotnik aims to be that place - a collective with an open door policy to music talent and creativity. Damien Fell & Trickstar Radio presenter Gareth Evans are attempting to bridge the gap between live artists and DJs, and to do so they have picked three incredible artists to celebrate the life of one of the greatest performers the world has ever seen. One year ago the world joined together to lament a man who, in his lifetime, instilled a sense of beauty back into the world and he did it with sex, debauchery and rock’n’roll. On April 21st people will gather once again to celebrate his life, his memory and his music. In honour of Prince, Robotnik’s one and only aim is to get people dancing once again. Alexis Taylor (lead singer of Hot Chip) is, in his own words, the self-proclaimed number one Prince fan. He demonstrated this last year when he turned Glastonbury’s Block 9 into a purple paradise, and it was the only thing people were talking about – a real ‘were you there?’ moment. On April 21st it will be exactly one year since Prince left us, and after the triumphant praise received from the set, Taylor has decided to take his tribute on the road. His next stop? The Arch. Joining him is rising star and XOYO resident, Kiwi. Producer and head honcho at Orlando Boom and Kate Boss, Kiwi is no stranger to all things purple. His long standing party Kate Boss has seen the likes of Joey Negro, Psychemagik and Felix Dickinson joining in what has become a staple on the London club scene. And just like Alexis, he knows his Prince. With all that said, the show would not be complete without a live element. So, Robotnik have recruited Brighton's favourite long-standing, party-starting, post-disco groove machines: Transformer. Prince disciples in their own right, from ‘80s synths to chugging funk basslines and infectious beats, their live shows are renowned for tearing up venues and festivals from Glastonbury to Razzmatazz - and with a new EP on the horizon, they’re sure to bring the house down. For Prince fans out there, this is going to be a night to remember.

While Brighton Music Conference offers plenty of latenight dancing and shiny technology to be amazed by, its core aim is to enable engagement with the dance music industry. You’ll find a packed programme of seminars and masterclasses, including a series of events from Toolroom Academy Live. Aside from being one of the world’s best house music record labels, Toolroom are inspiring the next generation of superstar artists. They’ve created the perfect learning environment with tutoring from true global artists, while their Academy Live sessions have travelled to places such as Dubai, Toronto, Tokyo and Amsterdam to give advice and reach out to new talent. Their strand at BMC sees Mark Knight and Prok & Fitch holding an A&R feedback panel, Josh Butler conducting a production masterclass, D.Ramirez offering advice on ‘How To Finish Your Track’ and Ben Remember talking about ‘Building A Groove From Scratch’. BN1 caught up with label boss, Stuart Knight, to find out what it’s all about. Founding an independent label seems to involve an excessive amount of dedication. What inspired you to do so? I suppose it all started with a love and passion for the music; then when Mark, my older brother, became more successful as a DJ and producer it became an outlet for his music. As much of your output is being consumed via digital platforms, how do you combat piracy? Is there any element of loyalty to the label which can dissuade people from sharing your music?
I would hope there is an element of loyalty from our fans – I’d like to think they know the effort and love we put into our work here, which like you said would hopefully dissuade them from file sharing. We also use a company called Audiolock who do an amazing job taking down illegal links from the web. What are presently the biggest challenges facing a dance music label? For me it’s keeping up with the constant change in the digital landscape, which seem to constantly effect our margins – and adapting so that we can operate on more than one front, bringing in revenue from less traditional ways than selling music. While people are increasingly able to self-publish, do labels still stand as a vital guiding force in the industry? Massively. The digital landscape means anyone can release their own music themselves, as the barrier to entry is now non-existent. However, where labels come in is in quality control, and also throwing light on artists who might otherwise not be found through their marketing expertise. The internet has almost negated the need for vinyl pressing and distribution deals, is it easier to start a label now than it was 20 years ago? Entry to market is easier than ever as you don’t have the costs that are associated with physical product - but on the flipside you don’t have the community feel and support there was back in the day as much less is done face to face nowadays, sadly.
Is there a struggle between integrity and commercial viability within the dance music scene? It’s hard to stay true to your roots and balance that with commercial success but I think it’s a achievable if you remain focused on a roster of artists and a specific sound. You may go in and out of fashion, but if you have a loyal audience through staying true to yourself, you can keep going. Have large-scale festivals eroded the clubbing scene? I think there is space for both the large-scale and boutique festivals, alongside underground clubbing. The main thing is that there is a diversity with the acts. It does get rather boring see the same big festivals with the same names year in, year out. How important are events like Brighton Music Conference on the industry and consumers? For Toolroom Academy its great to have a conference in England that brings everyone together in one place. Given that the UK played a determining role in dance music’s history, I’ve always felt we deserved a yearly conference of standing. I really believe BMC is becoming this. We have also found it a great place to find talent and show people what’s involved in getting your music heard and becoming part of a label. What do you hope people will take away from your sessions at the conference? We offer the opportunity to get close to people who are active currently within the industry and share in their experience and knowledge. It’s about breaking down the wall between producer and label - we have already signed music from previous attendees so it offers a real chance in getting your music out there. Is social media really an effective way of building an audience, or is it simply good for connecting with established fans? It’s both. We find by making great content we are always building a new audience – reaching people all over the world through social media – while also maintaining our connection and dialogue with our current fanbase. Toolroom has been around for almost 15 years, and has seen incredible change in the industry. What change can you predict in the next 15 years? Streaming will continue to dominate, and it’ll be interesting to see how this type of music consumption transfers into the world of DJing. Can you sum up your business philosophy? Here at Toolroom we have always prided ourselves on being approachable and nice… seems pretty basic but goes a long way in this industry, and in business generally.

This noisy local trio have produced a serious amount of studio magnificence recently, and now Klax are throwing an extra special bash. Seamus Haji presents a whole new night of boogie, disco and deep grooves. Famous for boogie & disco-inspired house cuts on his Big Love imprint and a host of iconic labels, over the last two years Haji has released a series of Re-Loved EPs and a compilation album out on Big Love. Now the Re-Loved sound heads to the city seafront, with some help from fellow Brightonian edit king Fingerman. Known for his highly credible Hot Digits label, his own productions have influenced some of the house scene’s biggest players. Feeling there was a gap in the market for their love of disco, these two connoisseurs have teamed up to host a whole night dedicated to the genre – totally Re-Loved for today's dancefloor!
Voice of an angel - vocabulary of a navvy. Now we have the cheap gags out the way, let’s point out that Ms Church is one of the coolest people to ever grace the pop charts. Whether she’s giving evidence at the Leveson inquiry challenging noisy ignoramuses or weathering Twitter shitstorms, our money is always on her to come through shining. But nobody dares question her when it comes to the crazy world of pop. Now her Late Night Pop Dungeon concept rolls into town, as she and her ten-piece ultra-metronomic post-punk disco-R&B backing band take on some of the greatest tunes that time forgot. If you’re brave enough to enter her realm, you’d better bring those dancing shoes.
Continuing their range of brilliant parties, Berlin return to GDS with an absolute stormer as they take a trip through the German capital’s music underground. Making the journey over is Swiss-born techno-head - Kellerkind, a regular fixture in Zurich and Berlin’s best clubs. He brings a powerful and impeccable style laced with his own soulful productions. Joining him is Berlin-based audio explorer, Bruno Otranto and Lunar Transmissions presenter Henning Schmitz with superior swathes of techno, house and electro. Completing the line-up are Codesouth and Brap FM host (and twice winner of Brighton DJ of the Year) Lady Lola , who’ll be going B2B with fellow Codesouth host and Berlin resident POoK. Landing in the city once again, Freerange Brighton and Worried About Henry are sorting out another colossal party. Not only will there be bass bangers by the barrow-load, this event also celebrates the release of P Money’s Live And Direct album. His debut long-playing effort, it perfectly showcase the charged up and wide gamut of styles he embraces including garage, dubstep and grime beats.
This pair first came to our attention in 2011 with a brace of tremendous white labels. As well as their own releases, they’ve been called upon for their considerable remixing talents, reworking the likes of Digitalism, Leftfield, Maya Jane Coles, X-Press 2 and Paul Woolford. Their version of the latter’s [Erotic Discourse] even won DJ Mag’s award for ‘Best Remix’ in 2014. All this has led to them touring on a global basis, rocking legendary venues like Amsterdam’s Trouw and Gashouder clubs, Berlin’s Panorama Bar, and London’s Fabric. Their productions have also gained dancefloor support from electronic music's finest DJ dignitaries. Joining this dynamic duo are Maxxi Soundsystem, Ashworth, Mattr and Matt Ortarix - which make this all rather wonderful.

THE UNFILMABLES
While Hollywood legend generally revolves around classics and blockbusters, there’s a strand of mythology which acknowledges works which never came before a camera. It’s a long list, populated by the ludicrous, the outrageous and the too expensive. Now The Unfilmables offers a response to films which simply do not exist, with live performances of music and ambitious visual projections. “The original idea was to do a version of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune,” Wrangler’s Stephen Mallinder tells me. “But we couldn’t really do that, even if it’s just an abstraction. It almost killed David Lynch when he finally did it. Also there’s a danger of doing something which was in some way realised as a film, as people will have a lot of preconceived ideas as to what they’re expecting to see. We also steered clear of David Lynch’s proposal for Return Of The Jedi, so all these odd things came up.” What they fell upon was The Tourist, a whirlwind depiction of a hidden culture created by interplanetary refugees.
live soundtrack to this dark near-forgotten script, “I think we need to put it into a broad picture of how Live Cinema works, which is challenging how people see film. This is just a way of re-contextualizing film and that experience of watching film.”
Written in the 70s, Claire Noto’s script is considered a masterpiece by some and trash by others. But no-one can debate its sheer strangeness. “I love the idea that the film is actually set in 80s New York, which was ‘the future’.” The first attempt to get this screenplay onto the screen was back in 1980, when it’s inventive narrative style sat easily with the burgeoning new-wave scene. Subsequently there would be a succession of directors and writers wrestling with the story; the legendary HR Giger even provided some concept art for the production. Now it exists through an adapted novel and extensive mythology on the net. “I think the sex scenes were quite risqué for the 70s. I’m intrigued to know what it had been if it was made. Probably some kind of B-movie.”
This source material is packed with abandonment, inter-species romance and some boisterously weird sexual activity. An extraterrestrial called Grace has been abandoned on Earth, where she works for a faceless corporation. Desperately, she wants to get away from our planet and most of its inhabitants. It’s obvious this was never destined to appeal to a wide market. Most large studios are wary of productions with limited commercial prospects, so an adult science fiction picture is simply too niche for nervous investors. The Tourist is a curious work. If you could imagine what ET, Men In Black and Fifty Shades Of Grey might be like if pressed into the same lurid universe, that would be nearly as disorientating as this. There’s stylistic echoes of the Mica Levi-scored Under The Skin, which the composer coincidentally brings to the festival on Sun 7 May. “It’s very different from anything else we’ve done,” says Mallinder. “We’ll be mixing the film live. There’s a broad narrative, but the rhythm of the film will match will match the rhythm of the sound.”
Working with CINECITY’s Tim Brown, the project has been absorbed into a production with the BFI and Live Cinema. Wrangler’s The Tourist now joins Francesca and Mica Levi’s interpretation of The Colour of Chips. Based on Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov’s famous work The Colour Of Pomegranates, the pair have regenerated this obscure gem as a lost British classic set in the North of England. Together these AV pieces are being performed in Manchester and London, as well as a trip to Brighton’s Duke of York’s Picturehouse on Sun 14 May, where it forms part of 2017’s Brighton Festival. Mallinder is well-versed with experimental visuals and sound manipulation. As a founder member of 80s proto-electronica outfit, Cabaret Voltaire, he helped pioneer audio and video techniques which still influence bands 30 years later. With Wrangler, a collective featuring Turing’s Phil Winter and acclaimed producer Benge, he’s creating a suitably innovative

Some form of chronology has been given to the script, which has certain parts re-purposed and adapted to reflect the current UK social climate. “In our understanding, and the way we wanted to do it, it’s as much a gig as it is film. It’s an opportunity to use the visuals more democratically. Often films are there to compliment music, where we trying to get some kind of synergy between the visuals and the music.” What they haven’t attempted is presenting this as a cinematic production. Instead the visuals, narrative and soundtrack they’ve created stand as an interpretation of the spirit in Noto’s original.
With some dedication and imagination, this dark tale of an alien underworld has (at least in part) been rescued from exile. As for Claire Noto, the creator of this abstract vision of a future now long past, nobody seems completely sure as to what happened to her or her career. “I’m not entirely sure. You never know, she might be writing under a different name, with a massive career in the 20 years since then. Perhaps we should create a biography of her life, as well as creating film for her.”

Sean Lock comes to Brighton Dome with his Keep It Light tour. He tours once every three years so don’t miss your chance to see this award-winning funny man. Lock is one of the UK’s most highly acclaimed comedians and has been on the stage for over 15 years. He pairs his hyperactive imagination with some surreal imagery to create one of his best shows to date. He’s been lucky enough to tour the world with previous shows, appearing in Edinburgh, Melbourne and Montreal. He previously won a British Comedy Award for Best Stand Up, but you might recognise Lock from his long stint as a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats.

Made in Britain is Tez Ilyas’ first nationwide tour. After the success of his debut show, TEZ Talks, his new performance looks set to follow in its footsteps having already been critically acclaimed. TEZ Talks saw packed out audiences in 2015 and had huge commercial success at Edinburgh Fringe. He also put on a sold-out run at London’s Soho Theatre, with additional dates at the prestigious Southbank Centre. The show was then adapted into a BBC Radio 4 series, which has been recommissioned to return in 2017. His openness is the key to his performances, whether it’s discussing dating a white girl or his pilgrimage to Mecca. Ilyas provides excellent communication of what it means to sit on the intersection of two cultures.

Tom Allen and Suzi Ruffell come together for their tour Hit The Road, with extra dates added by popular demand. Ruffell performs her third show Common, which explores her dodgy family history and her working-class roots. Since beginning her comedy career at the age of 23, she has supported a host of big names, including Alan Carr and Josh Widdicombe. Ruffell is followed by Tom Allen, who maintains his always hilarious, quick-witted, totally unique point of view. Having spent a number of years with the National Youth Theatre, he is no stranger to the stage and has already supported Sarah Millican.

Preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe, Phill Jupitus returns to Brighton to try out his newest material - Work In Progress. Jupitus is famed as a stand-up comedian, poet and improvisor. He first found fame as a team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 1996 and stayed there for 19 years. He’s a regular on BBC Radio 4 and creates documentaries for the channel. As a stand up, he has performed two UK tours: the Star Wars-themed Jedi, Steady, Go in 1996 and Quadrophobia in 1999. Jupitus is fresh off of tour with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang where he starred as Baron Bomburst/Lord Scrumptious.

His show includes a lot of chat about relationships, as the comic is recently married. He chirpily discusses toilet accidents and holiday meltdowns. The excitable Londoner is currently starring as a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats on Channel 4 and hosts Absolute Radio’s Rock’n’Roll Football show. Alongside Jimmy Bullard and Ian Smith, he’s part of Dave’s podcast The Magic Sponge. Following his show, Beckett is known to stand at the door and shake the hand of everyone in the audience, a testament to his title as the nicest guy in comedy.
The Pub Landlord suggests Let’s Go Backwards Together, on his latest tour. Critically acclaimed Al Murray creates a show that begins a common sense campaign to re-Great Britain. He discusses those all-important, opinion-splitting topics like Europe, the NHS, the Middle East and fortnightly bin collections.
Howard Read and Colin Hoult bring a double bill of Edinburgh previews to Ropetackle. The first act will be Big Howard Little Howard: Man & Boy. Read is one of the most imaginative and creative performers on the circuit and this show is no different. He brings his cartoon alter ego, first born on a CBBC show, to Brighton. However, this show is NOT for children! A mixture of standup, music, animation, cartoon six year olds and disturbing shrieking noises, it may be adults only but Read reserves the right to be extremely childish. The second act is Colin Hoult as the award-winning Anna Mann, a show that is as absurd and unpredictable as it’s predecessor. Colin has previously appeared in Derek, Murder in Successville and Being Human.

Is that Chris Ramsey? Of course it is! Everyone knows his face nowadays - being a regular on most TV comedy shows it would be hard to miss him. He’s performed at the Royal Variety Performance and, in complete contrast, is also often on Celebrity Juice. Born in South Shields, the North-Easterner is embarking on his biggest UK tour yet. He has performed five solo stand-up shows at Edinburgh Festival and recently hosted his own TV programme, The Chris Ramsey Show, inviting celebrity pals to come and hang out in his basement for a series of funny challenges. Ramsey exudes enthusiasm and proves pretty dependable when it comes to getting the big laughs.

Murray is one of the biggest names in comedy and his show is bound to be a sell out. His break came in 1994 when he was invited to compere at Harry Hill’s Edinburgh show Pub Internationale, thus the Pub Landlord character was born. Murray was once ruled out of running for the Perrier Award for being too popular!
WEDS 19 APRIL Theatre Royal welcomes Simon Brodkin, Britain’s ‘greatest hoaxer’ and multicharacter funny man to the stage. His evercheerful Lee Nelson character relentlessly teases the audience, cracking through regional stereotypes and by no means taking the easy route with his council estate persona. Channel 4 recently broadcast a TV series following all of Brodkin’s best hoaxes. This saw him targeting high-profile people, and sometimes getting arrested along the way. This deluge of fearless pranks ranges from his attempts to board a plane at Luton Airport with the English World Cup squad, to invading the stage during Kanye West’s 2015 Glastonbury set and giving out Nazithemed balls at Trump’s golf club opening.

The King of Edinburgh Fringe brings his The Best tour to Brighton. Richard Herring has compiled the best moments of his 12 one-man shows into 90 minutes of comedic excellence. The Metro columnist covers everything from deconstruction of the genealogy of Christ to his theory that racists are less racist than Liberals. Intertwined throughout are the best knob jokes in the business. Herring began performing comedy shows in his sixth form common room, before connecting with Stewart Lee and becoming a double act. He has now performed over 38 Edinburgh shows. The tour is a brilliant intro to the influential cult comedian for beginners and a welcome greatest hits for long time fans.

YO U R P L AC E B Y S T U A R T R O LT This year sees a shift in how Brighton Festival brings work to its audiences. While improvement work on two of the Dome’s spaces means exploring alternative venues, there’s also a renewed desire to take art out into the community. As guest director for 2017, Kate Tempest’s belief that the arts ‘should be part of our everyday life’ flows through much of the festival’s programme. “I wanted to bring a bit of what was happening in the Brighton Festival out to a bit more of Brighton.,” she said. “I thought it was important that as well as having this very exciting, cosmopolitan festival happening in the city centre, with all this buzz and hype and all this energy that gets built up from people seeing something spilling out onto the street, I wanted it to also represent the wider population of Brighton.” Subsequently this year sees the launch of Your Place, a diverse line-up of music, dance, theatre and spoken word at the heart of the Hangleton and Whitehawk communities. Developed with Brighton People’s Theatre, Your Place aims to truly reflect what locals want from the arts. “The festival has historically placed work in different areas,” says Naomi Alexander, BPT’s Artistic Director. “The difference this time is that they are actively building relationships with communities across the city. It’s a completely different conversation.” With a background in community development and already working with Brighton Dome on the Tighten Our Belts project, Alexander is now facilitating the festival’s vision to take high quality art and world-class artists out to the people. The first step was to discover what the people living in these outlying neighbourhoods were interested in before deciding what shows, workshops and creative experiences would be invited in. In partnership with The Hangleton & Knoll Project and Whitehawk’s Due East, steering groups were formed to identify the needs amongst these communities. Residents were asked to describe one of their favourite cultural encounters. “These ranged from WWE to contemporary dance. We also asked why they liked these particular experiences. This list of reasons read like a manifesto from the Live Art Development Agency, which was really exciting.” By taking needs into account, the resulting programme should address an imbalance in the arts, which was highlighted by the Warwick Commission’s 2015 analysis of cultural value.
This report revealed publicly-subsidised art is disproportionately consumed by a wealthy, well-educated, and ethnically-uniform 8% of society. “How can you turn that around? If that’s public money being spent on the arts, shouldn’t they be available to everybody. That’s what the festival is saying.” BPT itself came about because of Alexander’s frustration over how elitist the theatre world had become. “It didn’t start off like that - it was an art-form for the people to gather together and express themselves, and figure out what it was to be human.” The hope is BPT can continue to work with these communities on a long-term basis, further encouraging interaction and participation. BPT addresses the engagement issue by starting with the people themselves, establishing what their interests and preoccupations are, then making relevant and free work which is performed near to where they live. “There’s a sense that what is offered is ‘not for people like me.’ So how can the arts bridge that social divide and speak to people as human beings?” The idea is that people see relevant and compelling work, talk about it afterwards and feel encouraged to create something of their own. “Life at the moment is really hard for most people. Austerity is affecting people in a terrible way, so the thought of engaging in the arts is so far away from most people’s realities.” It seems obvious to make artwork which most people can identify with, but this happens rarely. The cultural values report identified that commissioners tend to programme work which appeals to people like them, instead of involving other people in those decisions and addressing a broader audience. This underrepresentation mirrors growing inequalities in our wider society. Perhaps it is time to intervene and do things differently. The sharing of art can play an important role in your life, no matter where you come from. “We can access parts of ourselves, and parts of our emotional world, in a different way by expressing them creatively,” Alexander tells me. “Theatre, and the arts in general, enable us to communicate experiences in a way that conversation alone can’t. B Y S T U A R T R O LT While a proposed wall might slow people’s movement across the US/Mexico border, it’ll do little to prevent the proliferation of ideas, art, and music. It’s difficult to ignore the vibrant effects Latin America has had on its northern neighbour. Honest, expressive and colourful, this culture crackles with passion – and this particularly shines through in the region’s proud musical heritage. “Passion for music is maybe the most important part of being a musician,” says Tucson-based multi-instrumentalist, Sergio Mendoza. “[There’s] a lot of sacrifice when it comes to living a normal life or at least our idea of a normal life. We put so much time into what we do and in the end if we had to pay to play we would do it because of the love and passion.” Mendoza was born in Nogales, a Mexican town nestled on the US border. Moving across at the age of eight, he eventually set up home in Tucson. Quickly he established himself with the city’s lively music scene, hooking up with renowned Latin rockers - Calexico. It formed the base for a CV also including work with Y La Bamba’s Luz Elena Mendoza, Giant Sand and Camilo Lara’s Mexrrissey. The constant thread between all his work is the melding of regional Latin styles from his youth and the eclectic music from his adopted home. In 2009 he formed Sergio Mendoza y la Orkesta, originally as a way of paying tribute to king of the mambo - Pérez Prado. Theirs is a feverish blend of rock, mambo, easy listening, new wave and pure pop, even squeezing in some country and electronica on last year’s [¡Vamos A Guarachar!] album. Treading a line between cinematic and party-starting, it might draw from some diverse places but it’s a ceaselessly compelling affair. For all its bold innovation and assimilation, this is music which still appeals to traditionalists and new music fans alike. Mendoza himself is a purist at heart, so appreciates the need for balance. “I have a lot of respect for traditions. I try to learn them first before changing them. Musically speaking I research chords and structure of old songs before making them my own.” Now he’s establishing credentials as one of the most exciting musicians on either side of that controversial border. But being held in the same esteem as his inspirations only urges him to try harder. “It gives me more energy and inspiration to innovate. It gives me confidence to not be afraid to combine different beats and styles to create a sound of my own.” A respect for what’s come before on both sides of the fence is partly what makes his band so compelling. But not as much as their ferocious live shows, one of which will be lighting up Brighton’s Komedia on Tues 25 April. With six core members and an ever-shifting line-up of guest performers, they attack the stage with a sound so massive as to be unavoidable. Obviously calming this polyrhythmic beast for the recording

of an album presents a challenge. “The studio process is a completely different approach. I like the live performances to sound different than the recordings. Of course, we try to imagine what the songs would be like in a live setting. But it’s always a hard thing to nail unless you play the songs out before recording.” Yet these recordings are still an epic affair. Packed with riffing guitars and pulsating brass, this alluring audio spectrum perfectly captures the spirit of their home - a city adrift in the expanse of the Sonoran desert. This is a landscape set for major change very soon. Not least with the plans for a wall to seal off the USA from its neighbours below. A robust attitude to exploiting the nation’s differences mean it’s more important than ever to celebrate each other’s culture, regardless of where it might originate. “The main thing for me is to be accepting. Yes, we are all different, but we also have to live together. It is the best time to celebrate compassion in all its forms.” Mendoza has often used his position to highlight injustices against the immigrant communities in his home state. Along with musical friends and collaborators, he has plans to conduct an Arizona border tour which will play on both sides of the fence. “We also plan to do a summer festival here in Tucson with our friends XIXA, to raise awareness on border issues and to help bring our community together in a time when people simply need to forget about the news for one day.” Even when there’s a will to divide people, music will offer a medium to keep them together. Mendoza says the musicians he knows, or looks up to, all possess a certain quality and sense of compassion. “We care about people and we like to share what we have to offer. In sharing our music, we welcome everyone and nobody is left out. Music is something you can’t see or touch, but it has healing power.” In the face of growing anxiety amongst his community and the rise of far-right groups, strength can come from a strong sense of identity. There’s also solace to be found in the connections and friendships Mendoza has made through his music. “That comfort and love can come anywhere. On the road, at a show and talking to people after the shows. An Arts Industry showcase taking place in the first week of Brighton Fringe, WINDOW comes to venues across the city on Fri 5 – Thurs 11 May. Ten events from the Fringe programme are chosen by an outside panel of experts following a separate application process. Eligible events must be new work, have performance dates within the first week of Brighton Fringe, and be ready to tour. The aim of this is to develop and encourage artists for the next step in their career. The season is promoted to arts industry professionals from different sectors across the arts, through Brighton Fringe’s Arts Industry Service. This year’s WINDOW judges were senior figures from South East Dance, First and Foremost Talent Agency, Creative Arts East and many more. The shows chosen carry a wide variety. If you’re up for a mix of theatre, dark comedy and live music, head down to The Warren Main House for Cabaret from the Shadows by Teatro Pomodoro. Running Fri 5 – Weds 10 May, this show contains anarchic characters who will shock you as they reveal the depths of your psyche. On Mon 8 – Sun 14, Behind the Lines’ Fall of Duty heads to Sweet Waterfront. This moving performance is about four people who are pushed together by war, song, reality and escapism, but are pulled apart by a century. At The Old Market on Sun 7 May, Focus Group* by TOOT and Ovalhouse will be coming to entertain audiences. A silly comedy with a dark heart, exploring the absurdity of modern life and consumer culture with humanity and humour. For an uplifting and hilarious comedy, check out Network Diagnostics by the Octopus Soup Theatre from Fri 5 – Sun 7 May at Sweet Dukebox. Kate and Tadgh have not left their rooms for a very long time. To make a living, they look for
work on a dubious website called “Hablo Hot and Heavy”. Bound to entertain your evening this show is not to be missed. Oliver in the Overworld by the Krazy Kat Theatre Company will be on at Spiegeltent: Bosco on Sun 7 May. A musical for 3-7 year olds and families, it showcases mastery of visual storytelling and bristles with creativity and humour. With stories told from the armchair of Jack’s care home, Scorched by Turtle Key Arts uses new writing, physical theatre, period music, puppetry and projection to create a journey of remembrance. Inspired by true stories from the life of writer Lisle Turner’s grandfather, this show will be held at the Rialto Theatre from the Tues 9 – Sat 13 May. Shell Shock by Smokescreen Productions will be coming to Sweet St Andrews on Fri 5 – Sun 7 May. This show is an emotional rollercoaster of a soldier’s story of coping with PTSD. Sweet St Andrews also hosts The Forest from Mon 8 – Sun 14 May, by Limbik. This show weaves stories, songs, and secrets. Based in a backyard near you, in the not-too distant future, a clutch of woman from far-flung corners of the globe float in mid-air. They have a new job: human garden ornament. If you’d like a weird but comedic show about a troupe of insects, be sure not to miss Terabac, Terabac, at the Purple Playhouse Theatre on Sat 6 - Sun 7 and Sun 28 May. With fantastical hybrid costumes, hovering words and buzzing soundscapes, this show is sure to keep you engaged. Written by BBC Trans Comedy Award winner Tom Glover, Sheer Drop Theatre’s fast-paced, hilarious Wet Bread takes place on the Tues 9 – Sun 14 May at Sweet Waterfront. Adele can’t work out how the Tories are in power - everyone she knows voted Labour - and don’t get her started on Brexit.

BY M I C H E L L E G A D U Z O Brighton Fringe is England’s largest arts festival and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world. Its aim is to educate and entertain a diverse range of people through a varied range of art forms. What better city to do this in than Brighton, an iconic city with unique cultural heritage. This year’s programme includes over 970 events at 155 venues across four weeks, from Fri 5 May – Sun 4 June 2017. Fringe seems to be the place where people tend to make the most of any space they can – well, anywhere they can fit an audience. Perhaps one of these spaces could be in your own house? Are Strings Attached? is a show which actually does take place in your own home. DOG, the former graffiti legend, comes to your house for a consultation in a darkly comic grown-up reworking of Pinocchio. A piece by local artists exploring borders, barriers and belonging will actually be staged along the boundary between Brighton and Hove. Talk about being literal - The Dance Trail is a show not to be missed. Tours are also a huge part of the festival. A private house which was formerly the Sussex home of Surrealists Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, will be open for tours, so go back in time and visit Farleys House and Gallery - or perhaps take a tour of an iconic 20th century Modernist apartment block along Brighton seafront. This includes views from the 11th floor sun terrace, the interior of the flat and the collection of historic archive items in areas behind the scenes. Other tours involve an immersive journey through the streets of 1970s Brighton, starting off at Brighton’s iconic Clock Tower. There’s also a unique opportunity to wander off the public route to learn about the past entertainment and remarkable history of the world’s oldest operating aquarium - SEA LIFE Brighton. If you’ve run out of options, why not consider checking out your local church? Dorset Gardens Methodist Church will be hosting poetry readings, exhibitions, workshops and photography. If you fancy experiencing some inner peace,
head to the Brighton Bandstand for Find Peace by the Beach. Listen to a short talk and a take part in simple guided meditation to refresh and revive your mind. Beach Hut 279 is a new venue coming to Brighton Fringe this year. It was recognised as one of the top ten beach huts in the nation in ‘Beach Hut of the Year 2016’. The Purple Playhouse Theatre saw the beach hut’s potential as a new performance venue, offering us Maybe Sleep with the Fishes, Correspondence and Letters From A Beach Hut this year. Brighton Fringe’s free outdoor performance showcase, Fringe City, will for the first time be taking place every Saturday and Sunday from Sat 6 May in Bartholomew Square. There will also be a one-off Fringe City Night on Fri 2 June, based on New Road as part of The Fringe’s Final Fling. Fringe City Charity Day on Mon 8 May is also new to the festival, and will host the finish of the Mayor’s Brightonto-Paris charity cycle ride. Another new Fringe addition is Shiny Town, a pop-up town in the Brighton Pavilion Gardens which features a variety of activities and performances. Shows include Trade Winds, Arco and Puppet Paramour, all taking place during the second part of the festival. Junkyard Dogs is a dedicated arts/café bar in the heart of Kemptown. They bring a range of live music, comedy, spoken word, art exhibitions and theatre to Fringe for the first time. Shows include “women doing comedy” Junkyard Five and MSF charity-supporting Comedy Sans Frontieres. At the opposite end of the scale, the award-winning Curry Leaf Café are running a series of interactive talks & cookery masterclasses at its new Kemptown Kitchen – proving that the only limit to any Brighton Fringe event is your imagination. www.brightonfringe.org

LITTLE NIGHTMARES FRI 28 APRIL / PS4, XBOX ONE, PC Once dubbed, "A game that looks like it was made by Tim Burton", Little Nightmares is a small but highly anticipated indie game coming out this month. A surreal children's horror, it invites players to follow the adventure of Six - a young girl who is kidnapped and brought to a frightening world beneath the surface called the Maw, where creepy animals and enemies want to eat her. Developed by the Swedish Tarsier Studios (LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, Tearaway Unfolded), Little Nightmares was originally announced in 2014 when it had the working title of Hunger. Those who are especially excited and pre-order digitally will receive a couple of in-game costumes: the Scarecrow Sack and the Upside-down Teapot Masks. PS4 and PC pre-orders also receive a soundtrack and dashboard theme. The game's retail release will likewise include the original soundtrack while the special Six Edition, exclusive to GAME, also includes a 10cm figurine of Six, along with a poster and sticker board.

SNIPER: GHOST WARRIOR 3 TUES 25 APRIL / XBOX ONE, PS4, PC From developers CI Games, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is a modernday first-person tactical shooter, and marks a major departure from the previous games, as it shifts to become more open-world based and features multiplayer. The game takes place in present time with a series of conflicts between three hostile factions. Players take control of American Marine Captain named Jonathan "Jon" North as he proceeds to Georgia to find and eliminate its intruder, with whom he shares a dark past, in order to prevent another Cold War. The game is based on three different pillars: target, execute, and survive. Players are allowed to use different approaches to complete missions and defeat enemies, as maps are now larger and more openended. For instance, players can utilise stealth and melee combat to kill enemies, in gun and run style, or use the weapons or gadgets provided, like sniper rifles, to snipe enemies from a long distance.

Developed alongside the movie of the same name starring Katee Sackhoff, Don’t Knock Twice is based on an urban legend and sees a mother trying to save her estranged daughter. In order to do so she must uncover the frightening truth behind the frightening tale of a vengeful, demonic witch. One knock to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead. Courageous players can explore a grand manor house (at your peril!) and interact with almost every object you see. To find and save your daughter, you will explore all depths of the manor, searching for hidden clues and using items to fight or escape the terror that surrounds you. Combining environment items to fight or escape the terror, the traditional manor environment is juxtaposed with modern technology to guide you, and there’s “atmospheric and high-quality 3D sound for an immersive horror experience.” A demo is currently available on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Doctor Who returns for its tenth series this April, with more Daleks, Ice Warriors and Movellans than ever. The 12-part series will be Peter Capaldi’s last outing at The Doctor, having been the 12th actor to take the role. His three-series run in the sci-fi TV sensation has been loved by fans and critics alike. It is yet unknown who will replace him, however it is likely to be either the first black or female Doctor. He will star alongside new companion Bill Potts played by Pearl Mackie and comedian Matt Lucas will revive his role as Nardole becoming a recurring character. The series will also be writer and executive producer Steven Moffat’s final run, having been writing scripts for over seven years. His last hoorah will be the 2017 Christmas special.
BETTER CALL SAUL TUES 11 APRIL Better Call Saul returns for a third series on Netflix. The Breaking Bad prequel follows small time attorney Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) on the struggles of his career that lead to his transformation into Walter White’s morally challenge lawyer, Saul Goodman. Last series left viewers on a double cliff hanger as Chuck (Michael McKean) secretly recorded Jimmy confessing to a crime to prevent him from practicing law. Elsewhere, Mike (Jonathan Banks) set his sights on a sociopathic cartel boss but an ominous intervention stops him from pulling the trigger. This season shows the repercussions of Chuck’s scheme on Jimmy and Kim’s (Rhea Seehorn) law practices and relationship, causing Jimmy’s faltering moral compass to be pushed to the limit. New characters are introduced and expect more meaningful nods to the Breaking Bad universe.
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE FRI 28 APRIL Picking up where the acclaimed film of the same name left off in 2014, Dear White People is a parody of post racial America. It is a universal story of finding one’s own identity and forging a unique path. Set upon the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university, viewers see the racial tensions bubbling below the service. The satirical comedy will star Marque Richardson, Antoinette Robertson and Ashley Blaine Featherson. A group of Winchester University students of colour navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness and misguided activism in the millennial age. The show will be released on Netflix.
BILL NYE SAVES THE WORLD FRI 21 APRIL Bill Nye executes a long-awaited return to television with a 13-episode talk show. Bill Nye Saves The World will welcome celebrity guests, conduct experiments and ultimately let the facts lead the argument. Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths and refuting anti-Semitic claims. He will cover subjects such as politics, society and pop culture. Guests will include electro house DJ Steve Aoki, supermodel Karlie Kloss and Scrubs stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison. Nye first emerged as a household name in 1990s as the creator and star of Emmy Award-winning Bill Nye The Science Guy. He is well known as an American science educator, television presenter and mechanical engineer.
L AT E S T C IN E M A R E L E A S E S THE BOSS BABY FRI 7 APR From the creators of Shrek comes a family comedy in time for the school holidays. Starring the voice talents of Alec Baldwin and Kevin Spacey, the film follows a suit-wearing, briefcasecarrying baby who pairs up with his seven year old brother to stop the dastardly plot of Puppy Co. The script is full of snappy jokes, being written by Michael McCullers, the man behind Austin Powers. DreamWorks always seem to get it right with animated movies, creating the acclaimed Madagascar, Shark Tale and Over the Hedge, this one looks to be no exception.
THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS FRI 14 APR The eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise has set the stakes higher than ever before. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) has been led down a dark path by a mysterious women (Charlize Theron). Seeming fixed on destroying those closest to him, it is up to his friends turned family to stop this reign of terror. However if they are to succeed they must enlist the help of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) a character they spent the previous installment fighting. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returns to continue his love-hate relationship with Toretto. Tyrese Gibson also returns as Roman Pearce providing some comic relief to this dark, action-packed thriller. Expect more of the same from a series famous for the craziest stunts, teasing a massive prison riot and submarine bursting into a car chase on ice!
GOING IN STYLE FRI 7 APR
“You’re never too old to get even.” Veteran actors Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin star in this hilarious comedy. When an evil bank absconds these three lifelong pals’ money, they must risk it all to perform the perfect robbery and redeem their stolen currency. The film looks to be of a similar premise to Red with its play on the stereotypes of the elderly. Zach Braff, best known for his role on Scrubs, goes behind the camera to direct and it looks like he’s done a pretty good job at it, with a clever, yet hilarious plot and some well-choreographed robbery scenes. The film is suitable for ages 12+ and is a feel-good experience for the whole family over the Easter holidays.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2 FRI 28 APR Marvel Studios looks to continue their dominance at the box office with the sequel to their biggest surprise package so far. In this outing, The Guardians are out to unravel the mystery of Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) true parentage. The things which made the previous film so popular are not going anywhere: the action, retro music and hilarious jokes that make a man, alien, tree and racoon fighting crime in space an enjoyable experience. Like any comic-book film nowadays there is an all-star cast, with Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Bradley Cooper (voice) and Vin Diesel (voice), being joined by Sylvester Stallone for this sci-fi adventure.

FEM.ALE BY N AO M I DAV I S O N During the opening weekend of Brighton Fringe the Marlborough Pub and Theatre will be hosting Fem.Ale, a three-day long street party and celebration of women who brew beer. Started in Norfolk in 2013, Fem.Ale is the brainchild of beer enthusiast Erica Horton. She felt the scene had an assumed image of being something predominantly enjoyed and brewed by “middle-class white dudes with moustaches.” So she set up an event for female brewers at her local pub in Norfolk, The Plasterers, and it grew from there. Her aim has always been “to create a physical space for people of all genders to enjoy craft beers free from old institutional ideas and assumptions.” The Marlborough is situated perfectly for street parties. “Last year’s event was a huge hit we were totally thrilled with the turn out,” she says. It’ll be hard to top, but Erica and the good folk at the Marlborough plan to have an even wider range of beers available this year, plus performances from an enticingly vast range of musicians, comedians, and dancers. Expect some unusual brews including Unite Local Ale, which was brewed on Weds 8 March as part of the International Women's Day celebrations, and the renowned Grrrl Grey - an Earl Grey-infused brew made at Norfolk’s Woodfordes Brewery. As well as all-day music on the outside stage there’ll be some special evening performances in the Marlborough’s fantastic upstairs theatre. Edinburgh Fringe prodigy Lucy McCormick will be performing Triple Threat, her acclaimed and unique cabaret enactment of the New Testament told through dance, power ballads and avant-garde art. Australian comedian Nicole Henriksen will be performing her ‘high-energy, pro-femme show’ Techno Glitter Penguins, and the mysterious Carol Cates will be bringing us her distinctive solo cabaret and ukulele extravaganza. Friday will see the event open with beer tasting, a funky soundtrack from local DJs and a talk from Brighton’s own beer historian Jane Peyton. Saturday will be the biggest day with the entire street outside the pub shut off for all-day boozy revelry comprising of live music, stalls selling a range of handmade goodies, fantastic food and obviously - beers
galore. While the Sunday will be “a pretty chilled affair with the last of the beers and a well-needed coffee,” you’ll still be able to get yourself one of the Marly’s famous vegan roasts made by renowned in-house chef and ‘Vegan Food Pimp’, Lynn. For those who, like myself, are not big beer fans, Erica has some words of advice: “I think the key to finding what you like is the same with beer as it is with anything else. Experiment!” Her top tips are to first ask your bartender for advice and tasters. Second, venture to beer tasting events locally. Thirdly, work out what you like and try other beers in the same vein. “I know of at least a few nano breweries in Brighton pubs, so go and explore!” Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed beverages in history and women have actually been brewing it for hundreds of years. According to Erica “women brewers or so called ‘ale wives’ were always at the heart of the rural, preindustrial community, making beer as part of their domestic and culinary duties as women.” And now women continue to make beer more than ever - Fem. Ale simply aims to give them a platform and the opportunity for people to come together in appreciation and celebration of the beverage. As much as the festival is about beer, having fun and meeting like-minded folk, Erica notes that given the current political climate it is more important than ever to “fight for safe spaces and speak up when we see that safety being infringed upon.” She continues, “I’m so glad we get to call the Marlborough Pub and Theatre our festival HQ in beautiful Brighton, for it creates a safe, creative and vital space all year round.” This is a day to be enjoyed by everyone, “to bring together a whole festival of beer brewed by incredible craftspeople and celebrate their skill and passion in a space that welcomes everyone.”

Whether it’s a strawberry daiquiri in the sun or late night espresso martinis, you’d be hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t enjoy the occasional cocktail. The BN1 team certainly aren’t any different. We’ve all done it. We’ve had a tough day and turned to whatever liquor we have left in the cupboard. It’s usually not one we’ve bought, someone’s left it in our kitchen. It’s not something we’d usually drink. Cue the lightbulb moment. We’re going to make cocktails. But it’s late and we’re tired and we’re not walking to the shop. In goes a dash of whatever fizzy drink is lurking in the fridge, a squeeze of lime, perhaps some blackcurrant squash. Voila! We’re so proud of ourselves. Until the confusion when, upon that first sip, we realise: This does not taste good. We’ve all tried to recreate our favourite tipple in the comfort of our own home, so why are they never as great? We got the experts in to give us some tips. We welcomed Simeon and George from Drinks Abode into the office for an evening of cocktail making fun. A mobile bar company, they provide services for corporate and private events, including weddings. Bringing with them their portable, fully stocked bar, they set up shop in the office with tables set for us to give it a go. Upon everyone’s arrival we were greeted with Peach Bellinis, a combination of peach puree and Prosecco. Bubbles in hand, we gathered round the bar to watch a demonstration of our first drink of the evening, the mighty Espresso Martini. Perfect to sip along with dessert, this cocktail is rich, simple and completely delicious. Simeon stressed the importance of using fresh coffee and steering clear of the instant variety, so a shot of espresso was the first ingredient into our mixers. It was then joined by gomme (sugar syrup), vanilla vodka and Kahlúa before being shaken with ice. Once mixed, it could be strained into a martini glass, ready to be dusted with coffee grinds for an extra hit of flavour. It was heaven in a glass, smooth and strong but still sweet.
Next up was something a little more fruity - a Lychee Mai Tai. Straight from the Tiki bars of Hawaii, this is a rum-based cocktail with a tropical twist. The juice of two limes were first in the cocktail shaker, before being joined by spiced rum, lychee liquor, pineapple and orange juice. Two cocktails in, it was difficult to differentiate between the sunshine yellow of the pineapple and the warm tones of the orange. Tipsily confused, we’re fairly certain some people ended up with double of the same juice. But if they taste nice, who cares? Shaken with ice, it was then poured into a glass and finally topped with grenadine. These were so tasty they were gone in a flash, we had practically inhaled them before Simeon even had a chance to choose whose was best. Enthusiastically, we skipped back to the bar for the next demonstration. This next concoction was one of Drinks Abode’s own creations, Summer Breeze. We combined crème de cassis, cherry brandy and vodka before shaking with ice. Once we had poured this into a glass, Simeon taught us a new trick in order to create layers within our cocktails. As we poured our sparkling wine in, we held the bottle top against a spiral spoon, which the liquid cascaded down. This created a fading effect from one colour to the next. Very pretty and even more tasty. This cocktail was the cherry on top of a fantastic evening. Simeon and George are alcohol’s answer to Ant and Dec a chirpy double act, unafraid to crack a joke. They have a clear passion for their business and the drinks they create. This pair are likeable but their drinks really are loveable. Drinks Abode taught us that with the right ingredients, a lot of shaking and a bit of enthusiasm, even us mere mortals could create drinkable cocktails. R O O TC A N D I BY E L L I E TA L E B I A N As an individual that categorises themselves as 78% vegetarian I am always keen to experience the everchanging culinary delights that Brighton has to offer the vegetarian and vegan market. Enter Rootcandi - much-loved sister restaurant of Kensington Gardens institution Iydea. Rootcandi originally opened in August 2015 occupying the first floor of Iydea on Brighton and Hove’s Western Road, becoming a full restaurant in March 2016. Though still in its infancy, by promising street food inspired by Pan-Asian cuisine from a 100% plant-based menu which is cruelty-free, ethical and vegan - it has established itself as THE go-to vegan restaurant in the city. We arrive on a Tuesday evening. It is still early but already the restaurant is full and buzzing. My dining partner of choice is a meat-loving man with a big appetite - an utterly calculated food review move to truly bust the myth that vegetarian food is unfulfilling. I want to see just how satisfying Rootcandi could be to a carnivore. As we gaze over at the other diners tables with complete and utter FOMO our server greets us with menus and a gigantic smile. We could instantly tell she loves working here and is bursting with pride in the food we are about to devour. The menu here offers a variety of ways to sample the flavour-packed dishes. There’s an option to select various tasting plates or alternatively opt for one of four set menus. Each of the set menus are named after areas of Brighton and Hove, playfully nodding to a love of the city. On the assumption that the staff know their stuff, we place our faith in our server’s extensive knowledge of the menu, which she takes great care in explaining. We take her recommendation of Thai Pani Puri as a starter priced at £4.95 and ‘The Queens’ priced at £15.95 per person. ‘The Queens’ includes, miso soup, Peking pancakes, roasted shiitake bao buns, kimchi gyoza, laksa curry, broccoli stalk salad, coconut rice and kimchi. First to arrive are our Thai Pani Puri and miso soup. Thai Pani Puri are pastry shells served with potato and chickpea masala, coconut and coriander dip, plum, ginger and lemongrass jelly. The miso soup, whilst delicious, was unable to compete with the excitement bought on by the Thai Pani Puri, an interactive dish which require assembly, created fun, innuendo and most importantly were full of flavour with wellbalanced textures. The rest of our food arrives beautifully
and extravagantly presented. Our excitement to explore the big flavours before us is evident in the silence that falls upon the table. We dive in immediately, exchanging smiles of delight as the flavours hit our taste buds. ‘The Queens’ is delicately balanced and authentic. Its standout dish for me (because I am a curry woman at heart) had to be the laksa, packing enough of a punch to leave me wanting more. The spicy curry delivered moreish heat without overshadowing the coconut and cauliflower. Not naturally a sharer of food, I was quietly conscientious that there may not be enough to go around. This concern was unsubstantiated - these portions have been designed with sharing and a hearty appetite in mind. To quench our thirst we opted for an organic Merlot for £21, which over the course of our meal proved to be the perfect accompaniment, going down very well and complementing each dish. After finishing our sharing plates we ordered dessert, opting for roasted baby pineapple served with coconut ice cream and a cream pudding. Both desserts are uber indulgent and decorate the plates beautifully. The roasted baby pineapple was a delight – take note that to experience this as intended and enjoy its deliciousness to the max it is vital to take each of the components (coconut, ice cream and biscuit) at the same time. We loved Rootcandi. The menu here is inclusive and relevant, and they excel in serving complex flavours with style and flair in a non-pretentious setting. The staff at Rootcandi are clearly proud to work here and be a part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking restaurant concept, and this is reflected in the restaurant’s atmosphere and vibe. There is a personal touch to the service which is not commonplace in restaurants, and there is a quality of care to ensure that the experience as a whole is perfect. Subsequently, they’re well placed to create a dining experience with wow factor and excitement.
