EDITOR'S MESSAGE: Farewell 2017! For the last 12 months we’ve been talking about (deep breath)… Donald Trump (still), Manchester bombing, artificial intelligence, Finsbury Park attack, #SaveOurNHS, Blue Planet ii, Grenfell, Morrisey’s underwhelming album, Jane Austen £10 note, FIFA U-17 World Cup, Russian troll farms, Paradise Papers, Kate Tempest at Brighton Festival, Moonlight, Article 50, #FreeMilania, Baby Driver, The rise of the ‘Alt-Right’, gravitational wave detection, Raqqa, RIP Malcom Young (we salute you), The Mooch, Bitcoins, graphene, flat Earth theorists, Dunkirk, fidget spinners, Hurricane Irma, RIP Sir Roger Moore, Zimbabwe, UK election, RIP Brian Cant, #MeToo, continued, Brighton Bike Share, railway chaos, RIP Brucie (good game!), loot boxes, Oscars mix-up, female Dr Who (finally), hacking, Little Rocket Man, iPhone X, Jeremy Corbyn at Glastonbury, RIP Chris Cornell, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Myanmar. Can 2018 be as eventful? Only time will tell. But we do know it will see Russia host the FIFA World Cup, NASA launching its InSight mission to Mars, the Winter Olympics heading to South Korea, Polio might be eradicated, the central section of Crossrail is due to open, and there’ll probably be yet another Star Wars film. So, the future’s not too gloomy, just inevitable.

TIME TO TALK BEFRIENDING While Christmas might be a time for gorging on over-rich food and chuffing your way through the Queens speech, spare a thought for those who aren’t quite as lucky as you. Time to Talk Befriending believe our elders should be honoured and respected – not forgotten. Yet, even at this time of year, there are literally thousands of older people living in our neighbourhoods who feel invisible. Loneliness effecting our elders has become a huge problem within society both nationally and locally. Time to Talk offer a service helping elders feel connected with their community, volunteer befrienders and each-other. Maintaining friendships and remaining active are two key factors to improving wellbeing in later life. For more information about the work they do in Brighton & Hove, head over to: www.timetotalkbefriending.org.uk

Gluck Art & Identity
Sat 18 Nov - Sun 11 Mar - Brighton Museum & Art Gallery Born Hannah Gluckstein (1895-1978), this 20th century artist is now recognised as a trailblazer of gender fluidity - something not acknowledged during her lifetime. This exploration of gender, and Gluck herself, is the subject of a new exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. 2017 is the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality between men in the United Kingdom, and the Museum has been undertaking a diverse LGBTQ programme since July. The exhibition is part of a larger project Wear It Out, a partnership with The Centre for Fashion Curation at London College of Fashion, exploring the cultural heritage of dress of LGBTQ communities in Sussex (19172017). The idea surrounding Gluck: Art & Identity was to create a queer space, where everyone feels welcome. With Brighton being such a diverse, unique and extravagant city, as well as Gluck living just outide the city in Steyning, it is a great place for an exploration of gender and identity to be exhibited. Gluck herself, born into a wealthy Jewish family, ran away to Cornwall with her fellow school friends during World War I. Mixing with painters, and sketched by Alfred Munnings smoking a pipe in a Romastyle dress, she soon adopted the name ‘Gluck’. Everything that Gluck represented subverted conventional traditions of the female, undertaking a masculine identity incorporating men’s tailoring, barbercut short hair and a mannish demeanour. Becoming well-known in the inter-war years for her portraits, landscapes, seascapes and stage scenes. She later became known for her floral paintings, like The Devil’s Alter, 1932, which is one of the few paintings not held by a private collector. As such, many Gluck paintings are today seldom exhibited. This public exhibition brings together all her key works, in the traditional tree-tiered frame developed by the artist herself. On entering the exhibit, there is an investigative scene, surrounding Gluck’s lovers across her life. Going round, there are nine fragments of the exhibition, exploring elements close to her, including relationships, family and flowers. There are also four interventions which act as a voice of Gluck with segments from her writings and notes, offering a visual narrative. Alongside will be a new, accompanying book with contributions from all the curators as well as other Gluck enthusiasts. Not only does the exhibition showcase her portraits, Gluck: Art & Identity blurs the boundaries of a traditional fashion exhibit, whilst signalling elements of a traditional exhibit. Fans and enthusiasts of Gluck, are in for a surprise when exploring the identity and fashion segment of the exhibition. Gluck: Art & Identity runs from Sat 18 Nov - Sun 11 Mar at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.

As a child of the 80’s - whose close friends included Sonic The Hedgehog and a couple of rather famous plumbers - my affection for gaming was almost pre-determined. So when I heard there was an addition to the Brighton pub scene on my doorstep which incorporated a retro arcade and the latest VR gaming tech - my inner child felt like it had been Hodoukened! The World’s End pub on London Road has been modernised - and I mean modernised: The dreary lights and dive bar aesthetics of the previous venue are a thing of the past, as you walk wide-eyed into a bar which has perfectly fused hyper-modern gaming, with a friendly welcoming vibe. On paper it sounds like a strange mix, but in practice it absolutely works and it’s impossible to not feel instantly captivated by the flashing lights and arcade consoles. And with a young and old crowd mingling as they eagerly wait to participate; it appears we’re not the only ones excited to try everything out. Heading to the bar we suddenly notice the VR stations: Four separate open cabins with VR tech dangling from the ceiling. We had to try this! As we all got strapped in it dawned on me that I've never tried an all immersive virtual reality experience, especially one that involved shooting aliens! Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope (HTC Vive/Oculus Rift) was the game of choice, where I teamed up with a buddy to fight off the evil hordes of ravenous creatures, with plenty of explosions and serious firepower. After several minutes in battle, lost in the moment, I’ve completely forgotten that I’m in a pub. Taking off the headset and blinking myself back into reality it was definitely time for some more old-fashioned pub activities: beer. The pub still maintains it's impressive range of craft beers, ciders, IPA's and guest ales, which, quite frankly, would take forever to list, but the Highwire Pale Ale and Dark Arts deserve a mention. Now offering the schooner option as well as pints and halves, it meant we could enjoy a variety of craft beers over the evening without breaking the purse strings.

After a tipple or two, we ventured upstairs to the new ‘barcade’ which had a very 'Stranger Things' vibe to it, and where you’re immediately dazzled by the newly installed ten-seater group racing experience, with real RC cars, race-track and commentary. Once you’ve signed up with your avatar on the main computer you can battle with your friends as you aim

for glory, or in my case, laugh yourself into last place with the grace and finesse of tumbling plant pot. At £3 per person this was definitely worth it, no matter where you finish. After smashing everyone on the track (quite literally) and getting whipped up in the excitement, it was time to savour some food. The Asian fusion Baby Chow, which is the sister company of Baby Bao came with high expectations. I wasn't disappointed, and neither were my colleagues. All wolfing down the 'steamed bun slider' options and mixture of bites to share. The freshly prepared food had us all salivating, but it was the draw of the gaming area and racetrack that had us rushing back for more of that childish fun we all crave. If you are looking for a fun night out with mates, delicious food and amazing craft beverages on tap, then look no further than The World’s End, a pub which contrary to its name, might actually be the future.

Low Cut Connie are an excellent representation of what Rock n Roll music should be, with even former president of the U.S. Barack Obama having them on his Spotify playlist. Los Angeles Weekly said their live show “is unmatched in all of rock right now”. Low Cut Connie’s music has an authentic rock n roll feel to it, consisting of guitars, drums and best of all the piano – an instrument rarely heard in the genre in this decade. Despite their partying, boozing and boogying reputation, their new album Dirty Pictures (part 1)] sheds a new light on the band. They now delve into a darker and deeper American life. There’s nothing that brings people together better than a bit of rock n roll, whether you want a cry, a snog or a good old head bang.

Having been around since 1973, this art rock/new wave band are one of the most influential acts to come out of Liverpool, alongside The Beatles. Deaf School released three albums between 1976 and 1978 before disbanding, but reformed in 1988 and have been going strong ever since. Their members have all enjoyed successful careers after their formation, with guitarist Clive Hanger producing the likes of Madness and Dexys Midnight Runners. The numerous musicians in the band, ranging from drums, keyboard and even woodwind, had a great influence especially for the fledging punk scene. If you had to compare the group to anything it would be a mix of Bowie, The Velvet Underground and generally a unique mix of all the lovable retro music we’ve been brought up on.

LAU, from both England and Scotland, are one of the most celebrated folk bands in the UK. The word Lau originates from the Orcadian word for ‘natural light’ although deliberately misspelled from ‘lowe’. This goes back to their Scottish roots, Orcadian being that of the Orkney people from an island just off the country. Lau formed in Edinburgh 2006 and since have been stretching folk music’s boundaries further and exploring new musical territory with each release and concert tour. It’s no wonder these thrilling performers and free-thinking visionaries and regarded as the epicentre of the new folk boom. The trio’s music consists of merging pop, with improvisation, electronica and classical influences, alongside melancholy vocals.

THE HOPE & RUIN
They took the audience by storm on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury, and are consistently reeling new fans in from every area they expose their sound. The RPMs formed in Brighton and have been described as 'spookily young, with killer melodies and an Arctic Monkeys rasp” by the BBC. This cheeky trio began out in Dorset when Jack Valero (lead vocals, guitar) Callum James (drums and backing vocals), and Miguel Cosme on bass and backing vocals collaborated in jam sessions. They experimented with tongue in cheek lyrics, their favourite influences and their own pure talent and ambition. Having taken part in a load of heavy gigging since the indie/rock band officially began only a few years ago, they are destined to go places, making a positive impact on everyone and everywhere they go.

It all began for Saint Etienne after the ‘Second Summer of Love’ where their inspiration was sparked. They take dance-pop, club culture and mix it with more romantic and introspective themes commonly found in British music. Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs are the building blocks of the music and created sounds that everyone could fall in love with. Their success exploded in the 90’s with weekly coverage in NME and Melody Maker magazine. The new album contains 19 ‘tracks’ inspired by their bitter-sweet relationship with the eponymous shires that have always been part of their lives and Cracknell says: “The record is quite varied in styles and brings together a little something from all our past albums whilst sounding completely new.”
Chas and Dave are back in Brighton once again with their “pub singalong, music hall, pre-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll” (according to The Independent). What a fitting description it is. The pop-rock duo is best known for their creation ‘rockney’ musical style – a mixture of rock music with cockney. Their songs usually consist of witty lyrics about life in London, a topic that pops up regularly with English artists, but ‘Southerns’ can’t help but love (and relate to).
No, they’re not Oasis, but the three brothers from Yorkshire rock similar qualities, including interesting hair styles… Gary, Ryan and Ross Jarman’s music channel passionate lyrics into their music. Including often sarcastic and slightly witty song and album titles like Ignore The Ignorant and Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever”. The latter album being the one that gave them their breakthrough, receiving the label as one of Britain’s biggest cult bands. A decade after the band began in 2002, they obtained the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the annual NME Awards.

Tigercub would label themselves postalternative grunge and met in Brighton, when vocalist and guitarist Jamie met drummer James at Sussex university. Picking up Jimi at Brighton Electric the trio have been experimenting with punky beats ever since. Having studied philosophy and other relating concepts, their lyrics fit the dark grungy genre, with themes that go deeper than the usual of being in love. Having played at The Alternative Great Escape and supported by popular rock duo Royal Blood, they are now travelling the country for their Evolve or Die Tour. Their most recent album Abstract Figures in the Darkhas been described as “seductively slinky” and has challenged any label that may have been stuck to them. Tigercub are yet another captivating band to come out of Brighton.

Lord Huron, the conjured project of Ben Schneider from the depths of Lake Huron in Michigan, comes to Brighton with his hazy, desert Americana rock. Lake Huron was the place where inspiration for the name came from, where Ben, the founder of the band, would spend evenings playing music around the campfire. Initially, a solo musician, Schneider built his first few EP’s alone. As the years went by, more members were collected for the band to help with the live performances. These included childhood friends from Michigan; Mark Barry, Miguel Briseno and Tom Renaud. Their music has made many appearances on popular television shows. Their music seems fitting for such as the soft meaningful melodies create a wonderful atmosphere for setting a scene.

For someone the young age of 21, Brooke Bentham’s lyrics bear more weight than some might gather in a lifetime. Her life ethic may be so mature as she had to partially raise herself growing up. Themes in her music range from feelings of unfulfillment to frustrating relationships. Her latest single in which she recorded her first ever music video is about relationships people have with sadness. Which despite the subject matter, was the most fun she had recording. This Northern girl – some have called the Angel of the North – was the BBC Introducing track of the week recently, played by Huw Stevens. Ignoring the somewhat gloomy nature of the lyrics, her songs are uplifting and through every track her outstanding talent shines through.

In March 2016, drummer and founding member of Pink Floyd, Nick Mason, joined BIMM London for an in-depth Masterclass. He chatted about the early days of this seminal British band, his amazing career and offered brilliant music industry advice to our students. Artists don’t come much bigger than Queen guitar hero, Brian May. He popped into BIMM Brighton for a highly memorable Masterclass session in August 2015. He chatted to students about his genredefining career with Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and, more recently, Adam Lambert, before visiting BIMM Bristol the following month… BIMM Brighton students were thrilled to have Blur guitarist, Graham Coxon, visit them in May 2014. This exclusive Masterclass saw him discuss his solo work and the rivalry with Oasis, and even treated his audience to a few tunes on his guitar. 16
BIMM Brighton students learned firsthand that you should believe the hype surrounding hip-hop icon and Public Enemy rapper, Chuck D. He visited the college in June 2014, along with Brother James of Public Enemy’s famed security team, the S1W. The pair hosted a very special Q&A Masterclass ahead of their sold-out show with The Prodigy at Concorde 2. BIMM Dublin final year students were given a graduation ceremony they’ll never forget when they were joined on the day by U2 guitarist The Edge. He presented them with an inspirational speech, offering sage advice and wishing them the best of luck in their future music careers. So, if you’d like to rub shoulders with the world’s greatest musicians, while gaining a solid foundation for a career in the music industry, then BIMM is most definitely the place for you… Because these Masterclasses are nothing short of legendary!

In March, BIMM London students were treated to an incredible Masterclass at London’s Bush Hall, with Chic guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Nile Rodgers. He was joined by the equally legendary drummer Ralph Rolle and bassist Jerry Barnes.
There was no-one better to host the new BIMM Birmingham’s first Masterclass session than local boy Tony Iommi - the lead guitarist and founding member of legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Tony had a Q&A with an audience of very lucky students who started at the college in October.

NEW YEAR’S EVE
BASEMENT JAXX (DJ SET) FRI 8 DEC THE ARCH Two words as synonymous with British dance music as ‘Red Bull’ or ‘one more!’, Basement Jaxx bring the noise to Brighton. Starting up in Brixton way back in 1994, they took their self-titled night around clubbing institutions like The George IV, The Crypt and The Junction. The release of their debut album, Remedy took them out of the clubs and into the Top 40. Tunes like Red Alert, Jump N' Shout, Bingo Bango, and Rendez-Vu became instant party-starters and forged a fearsome reputation for the pair. With a list of club bangers to their name longer than Donald Trump’s tie, they now bring their eclectic, euphoric and uncompromising DJ skills to the south coast for an epic party.

Coming from a family of musical history, Lucie Barât has had an incredible journey of acting and performing. At the young age of twentyone she finished Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, founding her own theatre company and acquired Dame Judy Dench as patron. Her success as lead singer with the Au Revoirs has come to a natural end and it is no wonder a woman with a multitude of talents would end up being signed for a solo career. The Au Revoirs were a part of her life that she looks fondly upon and in some ways gave her the push she needed to finally get her own music out there.
“I found one article that I screen shot and sent to my brother. It said ‘Carl, brother of Lucie Barât’ which I found hilarious." she said in jest, "It's like when I was acting, I've been in over 50 performances, but everyone seems to focus on me playing the smallest part in the film Troy."
“The Au Revoirs was mainly our guitarist, Cammy and I who started with The Fay Wrays. We were used to writing in a partnership, but his music tastes were very different to mine,” she said. “I am more about the lyrics. I consider myself more of a vocalist than a singer and I like to focus on cramming everything in.” Suit provided by Gresham Blake
“Cammy was a guitarist who liked flowery riffs and the two of them don’t go together very well, so going solo for me just meant I could indulge myself in poetry.”

Her new single Take Me Away is Lucie’s first official solo, which is out now. You can find spoken word somewhere in all her songs, a fact that really stems from her love of poetry. Her lyrics are hard-hitting and extremely relatable, which is what she tries to get across; she wants people to listen to her music and take something from it. In May she brought out a teaser song for the start of going solo called The Uprising, which is about the indignation of society and is very much the ghost of what has happened this year. The music video is a visual treat, created by Callum Scott-Dyson, and is part animation and part live choreography.

"
“Hedonism can become tiring as can anything,” she said, Lucie has done supporting gigs for The Libertines who brought fame to her brother, Carl Barât, and has also attempted writing a duet with Pete Doherty but took the song back to complete for her new album as a solo artist. It seems that a lot of her activities can become washed up in her family connections, so going solo seems to mean something to her individuality.
She explains that Take Me Away is sort of like a teen girl bursting to get out in the world, fantasizing about the future and being so certain about who you’re going be and where you’re going to go. Fast-forwarding to the future, being at a point thinking that maybe you don’t want to be waking up with a kebab stuck to your cheek every Saturday morning.
Lucie is a woman of thick skin and an inspiration to many aspiring musicians. She has walked down many paths and is not ashamed to admit that, like everyone in life, sometimes your destination can change and it is okay to figure things out as you go.
She decided early on that acting wasn’t what she expected, however she hasn't given up. Now she writes for film and TV and has been having meetings about writing a new Margret Atwood film, Author of The Handmaid’s tale. The music she writes also became recognized for being different and original rather than conforming to the mainstream sound. When asked about her own taste in music she said: "I listen to a lot of old dead women on record. I've got a record player and I don’t even have Spotify because it's baffling. There's so much on there! I just like flicking through my records so I can see who takes my fancy.” Her new album will be released next summer and it’s a six track EP. She believes nobody wants to hear more from a new artist and said she would rather do the old school six song set so she can start on some new material by the time her first album is out. She is also going to be doing gigs at the start of the new year, Supporting Lance James in January at The Borderline in London, and then back in Brighton for the spring. See for yourselves what she has to say in her music.

Oliver's Magical Emporium
42 Trafalgar Street, Brighton Nestled below Brighton train station, at the top of Trafalgar Street, inside number 42, is a very special place; an independent “mystical emporium for all your Wizarding needs”. ‘Oliver’s Brighton’ is the brain child of Oliver Thomas Dall a sparkling young gentleman clothed in a beautiful threepiece velvet amethyst suit that would make Willy Wonka swoon with jealousy. His shop, a veritable Mecca for the fans of all things Harry Potter. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time with its raw floorboards and open brickwork. Suspended from the ceiling are 60 round bulbs emitting a comforting amber glow that harks back to a bygone era. Within the many cabinets are artefacts from the books and films; including watches, charm bracelets, prints, boardgames, jewellery, and a huge selection of wands. “I’m a magpie” says the patron of the shop offering “beautiful and affordable” gifts in an environment that is as close to a magical experience as anything in the North Laine. Asked what drew him to the world of Harry Potter, Oliver enthusiastically responds “it’s the creativity and imagination. It’s that moment when you’re a child of say 8-12 - they have this believability that this is real, Hogwarts is a real place this is actually possible and I remember feeling that feeling and that’s just beautiful I think”. What has surprised him the most on the opening day in November is “the amount of people, its crazy… Before I opened the door for the first time one of my assistants said you need to look, there’s a queue. I was thinking 5-10 people, but when I looked out there was at least 100 it was so exciting. I went out and treated them all to some Bertie Botts everyflavour Beans. Some people had come all the way from London, Manchester and even Belgium”.
The interior of the shop feels authentic, the antique furniture include pieces that held science apparatus and lab coats. A wand holder in the centre of the shop that once housed zips was made by a company marvellously called ‘Lightning’. It is in these details, that Oliver’s emporium flourishes. Whilst not affiliated with the Harry Potter franchise, J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros, the independent shop has the pizzazz of a true fan. When asked what character from the JK Rowling universe Oliver would be, he is quick to respond; “Luna Lovegood. The world is very vivid to her she can see the adventure the energy, nothing fazes her she can do anything she wants. She’s truly unique.” After discussing his Patronus being matched on Pottermore to an Oryx (but opting for a Rabbit that appears on the shop crest), the inevitable question arises of what is his favourite flavour of Bertie Botts every flavour bean? “Toasted marshmallow, and my favourite worst flavour is the grass one it actually tastes immensely like grass its very Heston Blumenthal” It is very clear that although Oliver was not born and raised here in Brighton it’s definitely the place for him; “I have been living here for eight years now and Brighton for me is the most positive, energetic and creative place its just unreal. That’s why I named my shop ‘Oliver’s Brighton’, Its my little segment of Brighton where I can put back into Brighton what Brighton has given to me”. With each Oliver’s Brighton Product purchased £1 will go to support Brighton’s Homeless any tips will also be donated. In the lead up to Christmas Oliver will be hosting his own alternative non profit Santa’s grotto, see Oliver’s Brighton website for details - www.oliversbrighton.co.uk
"the project covers a range of sounds from Intelligent Dance Music to Reggae and Dub"
HIDDEN
There aren’t many artists I can say are as creative and original within their production of music as Joe Acheson, the man behind the solo music project Hidden Orchestra. It doesn’t come easy to stick Hidden Orchestra under just one or two genres as the project covers a range of sounds from Intelligent Dance Music to Reggae and Dub, to even bird sounds (if you can call that a genre). Acheson’s debut album Night Walks was a massive hit when it was released back in 2010, receiving the title of Album of the Month at BBC Radio 1, and since he has played 250 shows in over 30 countries. His energy and love for what he does seems clear, and those numbers will continue to rise as he tells me he’s off to Cologne tomorrow, the first of 18 shows in just 20 days! The tour is for his newest album Dawn Chorus, which is surrounded by themes of the morning bird songs. Acheson explains to me that this album is more autobiographical than the others before. Recordings he’s made whilst travelling and touring, music from over 20 years ago, from school and even some samples from his GCSE composition are just some of the authentic, and slightly vintage sounds we’ll be hearing. Music and Acheson go way back, with the musician remembering that he wanted to be a composer and the youthful age of 6. He would creatively experiment with his cassette player and chords on the piano to put together different sounds. Not only is Joe intelligent with putting music together, but he can play many instruments too. I can help, but be fascinated when he tells me he can play the bassoon – I’ve never met anyone who can play it – the organ, the guitar, bass, double bass and that’s not even all of them. A Turkish double-reed pipe is just one of the new addition he’s added to his collection of obscure instruments.
ORCHESTRA
I ask Joe how exactly he would make a typical track. The name Hidden Orchestra, gives away that there will be many sounds within it, however it is a lot more complex and time consuming than you’d imagine. He uses the track he’s now working on as an example: “I found a box of smashed mirrors and I just spent a while tipping it around, listening to it back and then picking out some nice little rhythms”. He then adds a glockenspiel, wind chimes and a clarinet player he liked the sound of helped him out in the studio too. Then he’ll go back through his archives and put in some old melodies and sounds. Then, there you have it… almost anyway, with lots of editing and so on, it doesn’t sound easy, but its definitely unique. He seems to look at music very logically, which is interesting, almost like a puzzle or maths equation. The unfortunate thing about this lengthy process, one which clearly requires a sort of natural musical knack for, is that he explains how he won’t be making another album as it’s takes far too long. However, he will continue making EP’s once he’s had a well-deserved break from his tour, as I learn that music is heading in this direction anyhow with singles being more popular than albums with the public more so these days. Inspiration is found almost anywhere for the artist, whether it be from a broken extractor fan or sounds of rain and traffic. Long walks in the countryside at night also makes for good components to his music. He tells me he has no specific influences, but an accumulation of music he’s grew up with over the years, whether that be classical or rock music. What makes his sound different is that they’re not lyrically driven or based on a certain theme, but “as the songs are written over a long period of time, they’re filled with emotion and different moods, not one specifically”. “It’s important there are people pushing the boundaries and trying new ideas” something that Acheson and his Hidden Orchestra have excelled at ever since their inception. Despite the ever changing, and often market driven world of music, it doesn’t seem that Joe has any desire to stray from what he does best. And evidently, he doesn’t need to. 24

VVIINNYYLL RREEVVO OLLUUTTIIO ONN In the film High Fidelity, Jack Black’s character Barry delighted in belittling visitors to his record shop. “Do we look like the kind of store that sells I Just Called to Say I Love You” he’d demand. “Go to the mall.” Regrettably this scenario has some foundation in real-life. “Stores were built around record collectors - who tended to be men,” says Rachel Lowe, co-founder of Vinyl Revolution. “These could be a bit intimidating for those discovering music. We wanted to have a shop for everyone. From kids buying music for the first time, right up to older people who were adding to their collection.” So, to address this imbalance she and partner Simon Parker created a space on Brighton’s Duke Street where anyone exploring music could feel comfortable. This has resulted in Vinyl Revolution welcoming a broad clientele. Families will visit together, finding a common interest in music. “We get everything,” says Parker. “From 14-year olds investigating The Smiths, students buying King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard or Tame Impala, people in their early 30s getting into vinyl for the first time because it totally missed their generation, and onto older people who are either adding to collections or replacing items.” Although new and vintage vinyl sits at the heart of what they sell, it’s more than a record shop, Alongside is a range of unique merchandise to brighten the lives of anyone fascinated with pop and rock. From t-shirts to beach towels, mugs to art prints, and kids clothing to homeware (including a Boy George teapot).
26
These original and striking celebrations of music icons were all designed by Beth Fraser, a London College of Fashion graduate. “We had people buying our T-Shirts from Darwin, Australia,” says Lowe. “How do they know about us? We’ve also sent an art print with a Lemmy drinking quote to Abu Dhabi… It’s great fun.” Downstairs resides a hi-fi area, offering an award-winning range of Pro-Ject turntables, which should please any audiophile. This area has been designed to easily accommodate book launches, documentary screenings and live shows. Brighton’s White Room celebrate the launch of their new album Eight here on Thurs 7 Dec, while The Ramoanas visit in early Jan.
There’s a strong green ethic throughout the shop, to the extent of recycling unplayable vinyl into new products. Use of plastic is kept to a minimum everywhere – your purchases will come in a paper or tote bag, and the PVC display wrappers are reused. All the art is framed using a company who balance wood use with replanting. The clothing lines come from a premium Swedish company called Earth Positive, who produce 100% organic, carbon neutral items. “It’s really important to us, being environmentally friendly and ethical,” says Parker. “It does cost a bit more, but then it’s cheaper to get children in to make your t-shirts.” Originally tested as a pop-up in Tunbridge Wells, the shop reflects changes amongst the record-buying public. Vinyl is mainstream again, not just the domain of the fanatic. This shop isn’t trying to be cool, but it is striving to offer a window on a pop legacy spanning 65 years. Statistics researched by the pair show 45% of Brighton residents felt uncomfortable asking for advice in a record store, while 25% have declined asking for a record because they felt it ‘wasn’t cool enough’. Thus, it’s vital everyone working in the shop is upbeat, unpretentious, and loves a wide range of genres. Handy stuff if you’re nervously after a copy of The Spice Girls debut reissue (something they’ve sold plenty of this year). “We don’t mind,” says Parker. “We do have Throbbing Gristle and AC/DC, but we also have Steps. It’s quite a large spectrum.” Playing in bands for over 20 years and promoting shows, he’s brought bands like Kasabian and The Cribs to Brighton for the first time and written a book about the live music circuit. Now he wants Vinyl Revolution to offer a decent and eclectic mix of everything, form 60s and 70s soul, through to psych rock, 80s indie, Britpop and a bit of jazz. “My background is music,” he adds. “it’s all I’ve ever really known. I just love everything about it - It never bores me. Hopefully I can transfer that to other people.” Vinyl Revolution is at 33 Duke Street, Brighton. BN1 1AG Their one day Christmas pop-up shop comes to The Forum in Tunbridge Wells on Sat 9 Dec. www.vinyl-revolution.co.uk

MAGNUS ASBERG BY STUART ROLT For over 25 years Magnus Asberg has been devoting his life to dance music. From playing parties and school dances to opening his own nightclub aged 17, and on to becoming a worldwide recording artist, there’s always been a constant mission to explore what sounds and noises people react and move to. “One weekend I’m up in London, then the next I’m playing with Nightshift, then after that I’m down here in Brighton with Berlin, then I’m off to the Czech Republic to play there,” he tells me. “I play with lots of different crews, and I’m blessed. It’s easy to get stuck and just repeat. But it’s always different. I’m always really blessed that I can play the music I like, I don’t really have to compromise.” He started out aged 12, listening obsessively to hip hop and rock. “My dad drove me for about five hours to get my first turntable. I was scratching with just one deck and an amp, I didn’t even know what a mixer was.” Back then he’d have to play a selection of styles to get gigs, but this semi-pro skateboarder would still be packing out venues – gaining enough experience to enter the DMC championships in 1986. His discovery of house music saw him quickly move onto playing raves in the early 90s, and enjoying a six-year residency at Stockholm’s gigantic Berns club. Then came a stint amongst the French ski scene, before he made a move across the Channel. He’d been visiting England ever since childhood, and was already frequenting legendary record stores like London’s Blackmarket, and Brighton’s Ugly and Urban. It wasn’t long before he was making an impact on the UK underground. “I played some warehouse parties with dub sound systems. They used to let me go on the decks because they liked me. I’d turn up with a bag of tunes, and go: ‘Alright!’” After a while he became famed for playing marathon sets for crews like Charlie Hall’s Sugar Lump and the south coast’s own Positive Sound System.
Asberg reckons he’s played out every weekend for the last quarter century, unleashing a mellifluous and unique blend of house and techno. “What inspires me is the new modern house music. My sound is not tech house, it’s not electro, it’s not deep house, it’s not any of that – it’s all of that mangled into one. That’s what inspires me – it’s new music all the time.” He’s moved on from playing Concorde 2 and The Richmond in Brighton, to rocking Fabric and Ministry of Sound, along with providing sounds at the British Snowboard Championships and Urban Games on Clapham Common. There’s also his successful Monochrome night at London’s Mass, and On the House, a title he attaches to club nights, a record label and a distribution company. The connections he’s built over the years means plenty of big names come to play for him, but he still describes the talent he brings in as ‘friends and family’. He holds a suspicion there’s too many DJs out on the scene who play for the wrong reason. “They haven’t got the passion and that 100% dedication to the music. It seems there’s also loads of great DJs who don’t book shows because they lack the appropriate self-promotional skills.” He’s not been content to simply play other people’s records either. As one part of the C-Soul collective, and more recently on his own, he’s had a prolific release schedule through labels like Plastic City (including a hit with Robert Owens), Viva Recordings, Bogota, Household, Evasive, Tastie Music, and Suited & Booted. “Back ‘in the day’ you needed to be much more musical. Nowadays it’s not how clever you are on keyboards. All the talented musicians have given up, because it has been taken over by noise and sounds.” Affirming the unifying and universal language of dance music has thrown up another oddity - Asberg acknowledges he’s sold thousands of records in Guatemala. Apparently, it has a bourgeoning house scene.
Coming soon, the mighty Positive are celebrating 25 years of being Brighton’s best underground sound system, with one last official party on Sat 16 Dec. This all-night affair sees Aberg joining other Positive residents: Simon Atkinson, Kooki & Shreddie, along with extra special guests Terry Francis, Eddie Richards and Liz Edwards, at the newly refitted Bau Wow club. His association with the crew dates to the epic parties they hosted on Ovingdean beach. “These were some of my first gigs in Brighton. I knew the organiser and I was quite handy with sound systems.”
32
He’s still driven to evolve and expand house music’s boundaries, even after those 25 years. But he knows there’s always more to learn about its hypnotising rhythms, and about himself. “I’ve learned to have other things to do. It’s the same thing I had with skateboarding back in the day, I like a bit of food and gold. You have to give 100% to something, that’s how you become good.” Positive Sound System’s 25th Anniversary party comes to Brighton’s Bau Wow on Sat 16 Dec. www.facebook.com/ magnusasberg.official instagram.com/astonart
An interview with FRANKIE POULLAIN By Andy Hollis
In a world frequently dominated by PR trained artists, afraid to offend and with a stock range of pre-ordained interview answers, it’s genuinely reassuring to sit on the end of the phone to chat about “the things 11th century wood must have seen” with a character as engaging and fun as Frankie Poullain. And that’s how it should be. Frankie is, of course, the bassist for that most contrary of establishment bellyticklers, The Darkness, and they’re back once again to have some fun. “We just want to create something joyful, and embrace the ridiculous”. The course of believing in a thing called love never runs entirely smoothly though, particularly when fame appears to leap upon a band whose first album, Permission To Land, gained them three Brit awards and sold over 1.3m units. We touch on the wryly amusing idea that a band, particularly in the style of The Darkness, can ever really be an overnight success though.
34
“People like the idea that in some cases it’s just like a switch has been flicked. I came to London in the early 90s and spent a couple of years selling grass and working as a jobbing musician. I met Dan in the mid 90s and then Justin, who played keys at the time. It took a lot of bloody minded perseverance before we really got noticed”.

THE DARKNESS
Surely though, when I Believe In A Thing Called Love came into being, the band realized they had hit upon something major? “Men are the most delusional people. And a band populated with blokes is the most delusional of all. As a rule you have to think that every song you write is unbelievably good, for other people just to think it’s okay”. A much publicised split occurred following on from the incredible success of the 2003 debut album, which led to Frankie leaving the band to up sticks and live in a castle in France (hence the memory riddled 11th century wood), along with a stint in rehab for the band’s flamboyant frontman, Justin Hawkins. “Things broke down, relationships broke down and stuff became unpleasant. People just begin to lose their human qualities when they become spoiled and cossetted”. Like many bands that should, and do, exist on the fringes, being thrust into the mainstream began to take away the essence of The Darkness. It didn’t (and doesn’t) suit them. They proudly live amongst us to challenge the notion that music is some terribly serious pastime – “we like irritating people, it’s what drives us on. Embrace the ridiculous. Choose bad taste”. In increasingly ridiculous times, their raison d’etre feels a solid one. However, being proud

contrarians, surely it must be frustrating to an extent that as a band of seriously accomplished musicians, they’re not taken altogether seriously? “We take what we do seriously, but not ourselves. We just all think it’s so strange looking at rock musicians that take themselves seriously. It’s a genre that is, by it’s very essence, ridiculous. Look at people like Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Comedy formed a huge element of what they did. Latterly the showmanship of Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne. How can you not look at this and laugh at it all. It’s fun. Enjoy it”. It’s a fair point. It’s the acceptance that all rock and roll is, by it’s very nature, a little bit Spinal Tap. The Darkness will proudly turn those Marshall amps up to 11, and there can be few more Tap-esque things to do than buy up a 16th century castle in France, ostensibly to “retire there and have a very long lost weekend. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt in 1559, but the cellar was from the original building. It was an 11th century cellar and I pulled open the door and just looked at this 11th century wood and thought about the stories it could tell”.
Having added some undoubtedly bawdy tales to the wood’s memory, The Darkness decided to reform in their original incarnation in 2011 - “it was common sense to do so. Everyone knew we should do it apart form us. Time is a healer and if we threw the opportunity away we’d spend the rest of our lives thinking, ‘you dicks’”. Pogonophiles of Brighton rejoice though – Frankie still sports one of the finest moustaches in rock, - “do what works for you. It’s important to find something that suits your face. Not too bushy, and make sure you get a quality beard trimmer.” And beard oils and potions? “No need for that. No grease or oil. Just wash”. So, they’re back ready but unoiled, and with a terrific new album to boot, mainly into the face of the unbelievers. Pinewood Smiles was released in October of this year, and a winter tour brings them to Brighton to perform at the Dome on Mon 11 Dec. Expect no holds barred rock and roll, big hair, and perfectly coiffed moustaches.

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN by Lottie Woodhouse Based on the world renowned 1950 novel by Patricia Highsmith, and universally famous Alfred Hitchcock film, Craig Warner sees Strangers on a Train into the theatrical spectrum. If you are into atmospheric, thrilling murder crimes, this production is one to watch out for. Following the story of a faithful encounter between two men in the dining carriage of a train crossing America. An unbelievable, yet daring plan develops sparked by a simple casual conversation. It consequently results in a thrilling psychological crime plot. Heading to Theatre Royal Brighton on Fri 5 - Sat 13 January 2018, the stage is transformed into a spectacle crime scene. Directed by Anthony Banks, after this year’s hugely successful production of Gaslight. Anthony was an associate director at the National theatre until 2014 commissioning and developing one hundred new plays for NT Connections. Given the opportunity to interview Actress Hannah Tointon, famous for her roles in Mr Selfridge (alongside her sister, Kara), The Inbetweeners and Hollyoaks, we jumped at the chance. Hannah plays the part of fiancé to one of the troubled strangers Guy, Anne Faulkner. On speaking to Hannah Tointon, the actors were yet to start rehearsals for the play. However, the excitement in her voice keenly showed her enthusiasm to undertake the challenge of the psychological murder thriller, saying joyfully “I can’t wait to start!” Having begun in the world of theatre from just the young age of twelve, working on a West-End show, Hannah had since only worked on one play since, Negative Space. Although her acting career has mainly been in television, more recently she has begun focusing on theatre productions, “You have so much more time and it’s where you learn the most.” With the play adaptation undertaking a slightly different technique and perspective than the traditional novel and film, the play seeks to create a sense of thrill and suspense atmosphere for all the audience. Hannah began by saying she had not seen Hitchcock’s adaptation film, as writer Craig and director Anthony had advised not to. Currently reading the book, she is fully immersed, obsessing over every slight detail, “I’m so fully absorbed, and I just cannot stop reading.” Rereading
the play numerous times, Hannah has been able to absorb herself entirely before undertaking the role and rehearsals. One of the biggest challenge throughout everyday life can be the hinderance of nerves, which is intensified for Hannah through acting. “I’m really nervous,” in undertaking this new role, as she says it’s slightly different to her usual roles, “She’s slightly older, she has social status.” The list went on. As well as traditionally working on television, there is an added pressure for Hannah as with theatre there’s more opportunity to go wrong on the night. In preparation, the actors have been undergoing dialect coaching, working on their voices and breathing techniques, acting coaching. Hannah likes to absorb herself into her roles: “I like to watch stuff, get ideas from other actresses and find inspiration into similar characters.” Murder mysteries are forever popular as a genre, so I ask what makes this play stand out. “It’s different as you do know who has done the murder but you can’t quite believe it. It’s a kind of nightmare scenario: someone has taken such a passing comment and has actually gone and done the murder.” The narrative is packed with manipulation and psychological discourse, with the killer moving around undetected, yet slowly they become more trapped. As audiences, we get to see the repercussions of their crime and how it impacts each of the characters. Fellow fans of the novel, as well as the film should enjoy as it lives up to expectations - incorporating all the traditional techniques of a psychological drama, with a dark wit and on-the-edge tension. Strangers on a Train performances begin in Brighton, where it will then follow onto other renowned cities including Glasgow, Manchester and London. For Hannah though, after the play she hopes to continue in the footsteps of her childhood career, and continue within the theatre industry. A spine-chilling atmospheric adaptation, Strangers on a Train will be at the Theatre Royal Brighton on Fri 5 - Sat 13 Jan.

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII THE LAST JEDI Fri 15 Dec The Skywalker saga continues this December as Disney are set to release the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It centres around the arrival of a young woman called Rey who serves to upend Luke Skywalker's solitary and tranquil existence, as she exhibits strong signs of the Force. Resuming immediately from where the prequel The Force Awakens left us - with Rey's arrival on the aquatic planet Ahch-To. So, we can expect some Karate-Kidesque training montages between Daisy Ridley as Rey and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. For those of us who aren't fanatical about Star Wars, it may be time to climb aboard this particular train, as [The Last Jedi] sees director Rian Johnson - whose directorial past includes Breaking Bad and Looper - at the helm, and a short appearance from Tom Hardy.
JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE Weds 20 Dec
It's time to return to the jungle. When four teenagers unearth a video game console with a game unbeknown to them, they are swept into the game's jungle surroundings and pulled into combat. Continuing the story of the 1995 Jumanji, this time there is a post-board game twist: the teens appear as their avatars, who take the form of Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and everyone's favourite rock; Dwayne Johnson. The Johnson/Hart duo made for a wellmatched comic foil in the 2016 film Central Intelligence, and if the trailer is anything to go by it seems promising that director Jake Kasdan has capitalized on the chemistry between the two in this action adventure. Undoubtedly an easy watch, forking out to watch this in 3D will be worth it.
THE COMMUTER Fri 12 Jan
Despite his previous suggestions that his action movie days are coming to an end, Liam Neeson stars in this upcoming action thriller, playing an insurance salesman whose everyman routine is disturbed on a daily commute home. This film marks his fourth collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Saura; the two having previously worked together on Unknown (2011), Non-Stop (2014) and Run All Night (2015). Sharing a similar transportation theme to Non-Stop - set on baord an airplane - their fourth film finds us on a train where Neeson is approached by mysterious woman who railroads him into uncovering the identity of a fellow passenger on the train who "doesn't belong". As time works against him, the star must either determine which passenger is in mortal danger or chance putting the safety of his own loved ones in jeopardy.
PITCH PERFECT 3 Fri 22 Dec
The third chapter of the heart-warming comedy that brought us Fat Amy has arrived. The Barden Bellas take their acapella prowess overseas in this threequel, having graduated college and all living mundane lives. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson star once again and engage in what seems to be an increased amount of action – cue the Bellas leaping out of an exploding boat. Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins also return to reprise their roles as the dry humoured acapella commentators, and seem just as negative as usual. Although the Pitch Perfect series has never delivered an especially explosive plot, the themes of sisterhood and friendship that run throughout coupled with the head bopping musical numbers have made the previous films an uplifting watch with endless uncontrollable laughter. So bring on the overtly sexual jokes and electrifying harmonies.

There’s a dream-like quality to Acrobuffos’ Air Play, especially with its vivid use of colour and movement. When a six-foot balloon floats above your head, you can see exactly how it got there yet experience the moment with the intensity of childhood wonder. “We’re clowns playing in the breath-taking beauty of air sculptures, and half our job is to let you enjoy it as much as we do,” Christina Gelsone tells me. The pair have performed in over 25 countries, in stadiums, circus rings, parks, piazzas, refugee camps, and giant theatres, and all these places have been connected by one very human response. “We’ve yet to come across a culture that doesn’t laugh,” says Bloom. “Also, people want to feel and be moved, and a good clown can do both, making you laugh and cry.” They met in 2003, whilst performing in Afghanistan. “We even have a picture of the day we met,” continues Bloom. “It was under a dusty tree, near a dented orange VW Beetle in front of a bombed-out high school. We had no idea we’d fall in love and travel the world for 11 years.” While their show is filled with the spectacle of flying umbrellas, enormous balloons, kites and a sparkling snow globe, it’s narrative rests on modern clowning. This isn’t craft reliant on make-up, big shoes or red noses anymore. Bloom studied Fine Arts at university, going on to graduate from three different clown schools. Gelsone’s background was in professional ballet dancer before embracing acrobatics and clowning. The pair even married at a clown festival in 2007. They align with the silent screen tradition of Charlie Chaplin or Mr Bean - amusing without huge wigs - although their shows incorporate many other circus skills. “We juggle, we fly things high in the air, we make people laugh, we work in a circular ring, we even ‘tame’ huge fabrics,” says Christina. In 2010 she saw a video of fellow New Yorker Daniel Wurtzel’s air sculpture [Pas de Deux]. Intrigued, they got in contact. Air Play is essentially an experiment in blending clowning and sculpture. Aided by specially-positioned fans, a battery-powered leaf blower, and a little helium, they cast a range of everyday objects into the air. It might look simple, but it’s not. Every venue has a different pattern of air circulation, which they must adapt to – and then there’s the task of finding umbrellas with appropriate aerodynamics. “We bought and tested 29 different kinds,” Bloom tells me.
By Stuart Rolt “Only three could fly. We did, by default, also figure out which umbrellas didn’t fly at all, and are best for windy days: look for the large, heavy umbrellas with a horizontal vent in the fabric. Those can survive the strongest gales...” Onstage they move in silence, perfectly choreographed to a rich and dynamic soundtrack. There’s showing off and squabbling, the pair locked eternally in a battle to outdo each other amidst the swirling fabrics and glitter. Gelsone admits they’re a little obsessed with flight and movement. She travels with a book about weather patterns and clouds, and her screensaver is a real-time world-wide wind map. “Also, I’m crazy about birds - would I be called a ‘twitcher’ in the UK? - especially with how they fly and their migratory patterns.” They regard their work as visual poems. Each scene is distilled to the core, like a ‘bento box of perfect things.’ There’s laughter, there’s beauty, and just the seeds of a story. “The less we say, the more you see,” muses Gelsone. “Everyone takes away a slightly different experience from Air Play”. While there is plenty of playfulness to be found in the modern world, families are experiencing this together less. This show has been crafted for every age and any group to understand, so the whole family enjoys it together. “Adults will recognise their own story of growing up, and kids will wonder how we crawled into the enormous balloons,” she adds.” Even on stage this pair can sense the wonder amongst the audience as soon as the curtain goes up on two fabrics dancing effortlessly in the air. “There’s a moment in the show when Christina floats a large red balloon over the audience,” says Bloom. “We can see even the most jaded audience member tip his or her head back, relax in their body, and often drop their jaw open,” Acrobuffos’ Air Play comes to Brighton Dome on Thurs 21 - Tues 26 Dec. www.brightondome.org

Presents the stars of tomorrow Embarking on a career in the performing arts has just been given a boost by the launch of BRICTT – the Brighton Institute Contemporary Training. Providing rigorous training to develop highly skilled, all-round performers, this college aims to nurture business-focused actors prepared for a competitive industry This brand new vocational training school is the brainchild of Mia Bird, a former West End performer and songwriter who has already made her mark on teaching with a chain of successful stage schools in London and the Midlands. It recently saw a launch event, which was attended by West End producer and BRICTT patron, Julian Stoneman, and so performances from Diner and Four Chords. BRICTT’s enrolment manager Rosie Butler says the aim of the school is “not only to train performers in acting, singing and dancing, but also to develop their entrepreneurial skills, preparing them for a competitive world where having mental resilience and the ability to generate work are essential attributes, often overlooked at drama school.” That shared focus on developing talent while also encouraging students to take control of their careers is embedded in both the three-year BA (hons) degree in performing arts for those aged 18 and over, and the twoyear, Level 3 diploma in musical theatre aimed at 16 to 18-year-olds.
Students also benefit from highly experienced teachers and a core faculty that includes some of the West End and television’s most celebrated actors, choreographers and directors. BRICTT also offers masterclasses and lectures with top agents, casting directors and producers in the UK and America. At £9,000 per year, fees are some of the lowest in the UK, with bursaries available and degree students eligible for student loans. Finding yourself in Brighton has other advantages too, Butler tells us. “You’re just a stone’s throw from London but don’t have its crippling living costs. And Brighton is a student city with a wealth of arts and culture. We also have our own connections with the Theatre Royal, the Brighton Film School and the Brighton Fringe Festival.” BRICTT also guarantees its students will graduate with an independent agent – another benefit of its close links with the wider industry – and be wellequipped to sell themselves in a competitive marketplace. “All our students receive tutorials in how to create and curate their own social media profile, and how to best market themselves. It’s all part of encouraging them to regard their careers as a business that they can take control of themselves.” The first step towards a career is the audition. While other training institutions can charge you upwards of £40 to be seen and assessed, as part of our ethos to support and nurture talent, auditioning for a place at BRICTT won’t cost you a penny. It even offers a bonus introductory workshop to successful applicants.
With student numbers limited, photo by Ashley Bird competition for places is fierce. Successful applicants can expect an intense but rewarding curriculum that lays equal stress on developing both the person and the performer. “Besides Once there, students find yourself at the centre of an our rigorous training programme covering all aspects of innovative, supportive environment that’s designed to turn performing, we also focus on personal development,” them into a performer of tomorrow. “We aim to give students says Butler. “By working closely with mindfulness coaches, a realistic idea of what will happen once they graduate so physiotherapists and nutritionists we offer our students the that the rigours of a notoriously difficult industry won’t take best chance of making a success of their careers.” Partnered them by surprise,” says Butler. “But, more importantly, we with BIMM, the British and Irish Modern Music Institute, want to produce multifaceted entrepreneurs who have the BRICTT regards its students as “training professionals” and mindset and skill set to survive – and the skills and discipline provides them with fully equipped, music and performance to succeed.” purpose-built facilities. Fri 22 Dec - Netflix Set in an alternate present-day, here’s a fresh spin on the once-tired buddy cop formula. This action-thriller directed by David Ayer follows two cops from very different backgrounds Ward is a human, played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, played by Joel Edgerton, is an orc. They set out on patrol, but it’s a night which’ll ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both personal differences and an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-beforgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
by Stuart Rolt
Set to be Netflix’s first blockbuster, this powerful film explores a large number of important themes against a gritty urban backdrop.
DR WHO

Peter Capaldi enjoys one last hurrah, before passing his sonic screwdriver and the TARDIS Haynes manual to Jodie Whittaker. Doctors #1 & #12 are seemingly stranded on a forbidding snowy landscape, refusing to face regeneration. A British army captain, seemingly destined to die in the First World War, is taken from the trenches to play his part in the timelord’s story. The Twelfth Doctor must face his past to decide his future. Then he’ll realise the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It’s the end of an era.
THE GRAND TOUR
Fri 8 Dec - Amazon Prime Cars! Glamourous international travel! Unrequited homo-erotic lust! Screeching tyres! Men in badly-fitting denim shouting numbers at you! Yes indeed, the planet’s greatest car show is back for Season Two, and it’s already looking awesome. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May reprise their roles as a trio of midlife crisis sufferers who have unusual adventures, drive the latest cars, and engage in a perpetual competition to establish the best endowed. More fun than a Fiat Panda, more outrageous than a Skoda Octavia and sexier than a Subaru BRZ, it’s finally back for some four-wheeled silliness. So, grab those string-backed driving gloves and your grey blouson jacket, and let’s get motoring!
THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE Early 2017- Amazon Prime
Based on Philip K. Dick's award-winning (and somewhat baffling) novel, this show wonders what life would be like if the Allies had lost WWII. With an expanding set of alternate realities, The Man In The High Castle is as brilliant as it is bewildering. The triumphant Third Reich are still struggling to contain the flow of propaganda films which show them losing the war, as well as keeping an uneasy peace with the Japanese Empire. Another conflict seems perilously close, but that won’t stop each major player in this exceptional science fiction show from following their own agendas. This is the first season with new showrunner Eric Overmyer, and it’s set to be even more thought-provoking, ambitious and compelling.

HIXON GREEN I’ve been eagerly watching Hixon Green transform from an empty shell to gorgeous new venue over the past month or two so I needed no persuasion to go and check it out for myself. The only decision I did struggle with was whether to visit for Breakfast, Lunch or spend an evening enjoying the amazing selection of wines with a cheese or charcuterie board. In the end a rather debauched weekend made the decision for me, and come Sunday morning when the sun was shining (although freezing cold) it seemed like the perfect time to head out for an indulgent Brunch down in Hove. One thing I had not bargained for was that half of Hove seemed to have the same idea - which when that ‘gagging for a coffee’ and ravenous hunger that accompanies any good hangover is in full swing, is probably not the best state to enter a jam packed new cafe (especially if you have hanger issues!) We were greeted warmly as we entered and were informed a table in the window would only be a minute or two (which given how busy it was seemed exceptionally lucky!) Our waiter came over promptly and our coffees and fresh orange juice arrived shortly after our order was taken.
Again my usual dilemma of what to order was actually made easier by the fact my hangover was demanding nothing less than a full english, though I should point out the menu had loads of delicious sounding options. In the end we decided to go all out and order extra avocado as the mouth watering description of the Avocado Smash was just too much to pass up on. Despite our initial gratitude at the speed of the service (believing the hangover Gods were on our side), there was a bit of a wait on food - although this was expected due to the fact that almost every seat in the house was taken. When our plates were set in front of us we knew it had been well worth the wait. The full breakfast really is the ‘real deal’. Everything including the eggs were cooked to absolute perfection and the sausage and bacon were noticeably great quality. Throughout the meal the staff were friendly and attentive, checking back on the food and offering more drinks. Hixon Green definitely doesn’t scrimp on size or quality which can be noted in the general opulence of the place. The high ceilings and light airy feel of the place is a perfect setting for a sunny Sunday brunch and I am keen to go back and check out the vibe in the evening as the feel of the place bodes well for a relaxed date night with wine and deli board. Big tick from me, already looking forward to my next visit.

PIKE & PINE (1D ST JAMES ST, BRIGHTON BN2 1RE)
Recently winning a gold award for their venue design, Pike & Pine restaurant in Kemp Town has recently reworked their menu, losing their taster menus to an undoubtedly more flexible one. While a number of other restaurants have recently fallen for the formality and etiquette which comes with a taster menu, it seems Pike & Pine have relinquished tasters in favour of elegant sharing plates, mains, deserts and bites. Not many of us have the funds to splurge on fine dining, so this new menu opens Pike & Pine up for those of us who want to treat ourselves without going bankrupt. Reviews assure the finesse and high calibre of food created by chef Matt Gillan has not been compromised, with the new menu maintaining an abundance of twists and turns to keep your visit unique.
WOODBOX PIZZA (6 CHURCH ROAD, HOVE, BN3 2FL)
Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a distinct lack of independent pizzerias in Brighton. But over the past two years more and more have been popping up, including the ever-popular Morelli Zorelli and Fatto a Mano. But there is a newcomer to the city: Woodbox. Situated in Kemp Town, only a few steps back from the charming seafront, this pizzeria serves up wood fired traditional Napoli style sourdough pizzas. Born out of food van which served only pizza at food markets, festivals and other events, the restaurant holds an extended menu, offering up an array of starters, ten varying pizzas and a choice of two deserts. Pizza lovers of Brighton, we have had the opportunity to be particularly particular about where we eat our sourdough pizza, and it is fair to say Woodbox deserves a place high up in the ranks!

EARTH AND STARS
(46 WINDSOR ST, BRIGHTON BN1 1RJ)
Won gold for Best Pub and Best Pub Food at Brighton Food & Drinks Award. With Christmas around the corner, and the oh-so-gloomy January which succeeds it, many of us will be spending most of our time at the pub. But with Brighton boasting over three hundred pubs, the choice of where to drink away December is a tough one. Thankfully, the recent Brighton Food & Drinks Awards provides an answer: The Earth and Stars. Nestled on the corner of Church and Windsor Streets, this friendly pub received both the gold award for best pub and best pub food. Its cosy and warm interior - accompanied by a magical balcony upstairs - manages to make it simultaneously inviting to groups of friends, families, or even for a romantic winter date. Catering for both the omnivorous and the vegan, the new head chef has created a mouth-watering winter menu to ensure that all customers stick to the winter tradition of eating; whether it be a light bite, a hearty main or an elegant cheeseboard.
PATTYPAN @THE VICTORY INN (6 DUKE ST, BRIGHTON BN1 1AH)
Dominating the corner of Duke Street, The Victory Inn has recently introduced a new kitchen run by Pattypan Kitchen. Perfect as a cosy escape from the cold, or from when your feet are tired from walking around town, or from when you just need a pint after carrying your girlfriend's shopping all over town, it can now become a new refuge for all you vegetarians and vegans. Celebrating simple and freshly prepared vegetables, Pattypan runs an exclusively vegetarian and vegan menu, which ranges from stuffed Portobello mushrooms and open sandwiches to pakoras and arancini. Bringing a somewhat quirky edge to vegetarian and vegan food at a reasonable price, stopping by the Victory just to try out the new food is well worth it..
For those of us who are committed coffee drinkers by day and dedicated wine drinkers by night, a cafe and wine bar named Hixon Green in Hove is our new ‘Holy Grail’. With the brunch menu offering classic dishes with a twist - their Kipper's Florentine being a prime example; the lunch menu - running from 12-5pm - is a novelty. Set at £12 a head, your lunch dish is formed of three components, each being chosen by you from a choice of four options per component, to ensure that every element of the dish suits your taste-buds! The plush interior is both cosy and swanky, making it an easy place to while away the day, and then begin your evening the right way - with a glass of wine. Be sure to check out page 49 for the full review!
77Bone Bone BURGER BURGER CO CO 120 Church Rd, Hove BN3 2EA
I have to say it isn’t often that I find myself eating out on a Monday evening - generally these are strictly reserved for PJs and an early night on the sofa with Netflix and a relatively healthy dinner. But on this particularly dreary, wet Monday evening after a long day in the office, my friend (who clearly didn't go out at the weekend) suggested we go check out Hove’s new burger joint 7Bone Burger Co - the halo from head was quick to slip away! 7bone Burger Co describes itself as "servin' up American comfort food classics including dry aged burgers, smokehaus BBQ, craft beers and cocktails, in a feel good speakeasy joint.", this was enough to raise my interest and venture out into the cold. Within seconds of being through the door I had almost forgotten the miserable evening outside. The vibe in the restaurant was relaxed, warm and extremely buzzy as a friendly waitress showed us to our table. The decor is much what is to be expected from an american style diner with neon signs and bright lights, red leather booths and vintage style prints dotted around the dark blue walls. I felt it rude not to order a beer while we still pondered over the menu. I was delighted to see a Tropical IPA on the menu so opted for the Wild Deer Pogo, a beer featuring all of the key words that accompany my favourite ‘on trend’ tipple. My friend went straight for the cocktail menu and chose a dr polska - a sweet treat of vodka, maraschino, amaretto and coke! The waitress came over and introduced herself by name in true American fashion. She was very friendly and helpful and talked us through the menu, helping us out with the couple of items we weren’t familiar with and explaining some of the meal deal options. I asked for some recommendations and her eyes lit up as she began reeling off various options we should go for - whilst nudging my friend to order different food so we could share, as neither of us could decide on one thing.

Despite Dorigan (our lovely waitress) giving us a heads up that we may not need to order provisionals (starters), we decided to go all out (what else are you going to do on a Monday?) and ordered a portion of pork rinds and tater tots served with garlic butter and an apple & maple dip. As soon as they arrived, and after seeing the rather large main-food
portions on other tables, I realised we probably had over ordered, but nevertheless the crispy, salty deep fried delights went down a dream. Our mains followed in quick succession and Dorigan was certainly not joking about the portion sizes! We had been recommended the ‘Prince Charles is Overrated’ with a side of frickles (deep fried pickles) and the ‘One Big Chicken’ with a side of dirty fries. The food came out piping hot, served in the typical red plastic baskets you would expect in a hip burger bar. After 10 minutes of absolute silence whilst we devoured the goods - we looked up to agree quite how delicious everything was! The 'Prince Charles is Overrated' beef burger was perfectly cooked to medium rare in a soft white bun, with bacon, pickles, lettuce - dripping with dirty burger sauce and melted cheese. The 'One Big Chicken' burger had buttermilk fried crispy chicken, hash brown, cheese, chipotle ketchup, hp sauce and mayo! We shared everything in a messy facestuffing competition, including the dirty fries topped with their signature dirty spread, lettuce and smoked bacon. But my favourite part of the meal had to be my introduction to Frickles - a sweet and sour slice of gherkin covered in a crispy-fluffy batter which I can only describe as a total mouthgasm. We topped off our indulgent dinner by treating ourselves to a couple of cheeky cocktails - My friend opted for the ‘French Bone’ which was a sweet and fruity short pink beverage. I felt I had made a winning choice with the ‘End Game’ which was a dangerously tasty concoction with ‘lots of rums’ and a velvety secret passion-fruit mix. We could hardly move at this point and thought we had finished but one last at-tempt to get something sweet, for the journey home, we ordered two milkshakes to go. A berry freeze and a maltoreo - a delectable and gooey mix of ice cream, caremel and Oreo pieces. It wasn't long after my visit before I started telling all my Hove pals that they have to try this place, - so what are you waiting for?
