December 2014

Do we still celebrate happiness at Christmas? Why does the idea of consuming another huge meal, simply out of duty, inspire indolence rather than excitement? A once idealistic holiday filled with cheer and genuine goodwill is becoming a headache-inducing festival of nihilistic gluttony. An obese old man promising material gain is more important than a child, born two millennia ago, who carried the world’s expectations. Maybe it’s easier to adorn ourselves with the trappings of Christmas, than practicing the true spirit of it. So this year, gather your loved ones and explore what happiness and kindness really means. Christmas Markets Get in the festive spirit December sees a plethora of markets and fairs hit Brighton and the surrounding areas. There’s sure to be a market or fair for everyone. They provide the perfect opportunity to pick up gifts or eat tasty treats. Even if you just fancy wrapping up warm and going for a fun day out they’re ideal. So pop on your warm coat and see the winter wonders that Brighton has to offer. For those who fancy something a little more continental – for the ninth year the German Market has returned to Churchill Square. Every day up until Christmas Eve, shoppers will be able to browse across 14 beautiful wooden stalls filled with festive ambience. It’s a great place to pick up alternative Christmas gifts from European and local producers, and a great excuse to enjoy a mulled wine and delicious Bratwurst as you shop. This festive season sees a large number of Christmas related events springing up at the Open Market on London Road. If you enjoy the idea of giving a personal gift this year, pop along to the Make it at the Market. On both Sat 13 and Sat 20 Dec the artists, craftspeople and traders of the Open Market will be on hand to help you create Christmas gifts. Just drop in for jewellery-making, chocolate-creating, sewing workshops, personalised hampers and more. Live Christmas music and Santa will be there to create a festive mood.

By Elliot Tyers If you’d rather leave the gift-making to someone a bit more skilled then you can still pop along to the Open Market for Brighton Craft Alliance’s Handmade, Craft and Vintage Christmas Fair on Sun 14 Dec. More than 40 stalls will be selling a wide range of high quality handmade gifts for Christmas stockings such as contemporary crafts, local art and unique edible treats. And if you still haven’t got your fix of the Open Market on Sun 21 Dec, the monthly Vintage and Antiques Market will be back with a sprinkling of Christmas cheer. A local artist will transform the space into a winter wonderland, featuring a 20-foot-tall Christmas tree with peddle powered tree lights. Some of the best traders in the south will be there selling everything from vintage clothing to memorabilia, jewellery to antiques. For something a bit different, up until Sun 14 Dec, the Christmas Artists Open Houses Festival will be running. Spread across Brighton & Hove, it’s a great way to discover the diversity of creative talent that exists in the city and an ideal way to pick up items like handcrafted Christmas cards, wreaths, tree decorations or foodie gifts. It’s a great way to meet all your Christmas shopping needs while getting to peek around Brighton’s most interesting homes and view an amazing selection of individual and unique arts and crafts. As you can see there’s a huge range of fairs and markets across the City guaranteed to get anyone in the festive mood this Christmas.

Arts production company Contemporary Connections launch their current project Sounding Food and Music with an evening of cutting edge and unusual music by women on Sat 6 Dec at the Old Market. This listening experience explores the connections between food, eating, gender and sound.

Multiple venues across Brighton Thu 4 - Sun 7 Dec

This is the biggest and most ambitious Drill event to date. Curated by the legendary post-rock band, Wire, it provides a way of exploring the impact they’ve had on rock music. It also offers an opportunity for the band to connect with both new and established artists whose work they find inspiring. The nights are drawing in, but Drill Brighton will be lighting up some of the city’s favourite venues with some incredible shows. With more acts still being announced, you can keep up to date by visiting: www.drillfestival.com

The Old Market / Jubilee Library Sat 6 Dec

Using music as a medium to question ideas of dieting, relationships and the role of women in food production, the concert features a new commission from sound artist Amy Cunningham performed by the Centenary Ensemble, and works by Pia Gilbert, Helen Bowater, Daphne Oram and Nicola LeFanu. The Sounding Food and Music project continues with a free public exhibition at Jubilee Library on Mon 19 - Sat 31 Jan, which features a musical dinner table where visitors can listen to and learn about the works of the women featured in the project. The project is also collecting everyday experiences and stories relating to food and music. These stories will make up an online archive capturing a particular moment in history documenting thoughts relating. To get involved at: www.contemporaryconnections.weebly.com

Joe Dolman

ON E T O WAT CH

Hey Joe, where you going…

By Stuart Rolt

At first impression Joe Dolman is just an average teenager. He’s got on-trend hair and clothes, and a likeable air. For someone so talented, he’s also distinctly unaffected. We’re meeting in the stylish surroundings of MyHotel because, just maybe, he’s on the verge of being rather successful.

“I’ve already surpassed everything that I’d thought I’d be doing. I’m not a massive dreamer. I have aspirations and goals, but I’m pretty realistic at the same.” Perhaps this thinking keeps Dolman grounded, even in the face of a growing number of people celebrating what he does.

Dolman writes and performs his own songs, drawing from influences like Damien Rice and Passenger. Blending delicate guitar and melodic vocals, it’s a fresh and folky take on alternative pop. “It’s not what people expect when they look at me,” he tells me. “I’ve played a few gigs where people have heckled me before I’ve started playing, thinking I’m just another Justin Bieber, then I start playing folk songs.”

Now he’s undertaking a BA songwriting degree at BIMM Brighton. It’s an artist like Dolman who benefits most from the inclusive and encouraging environment the music college offers. Here students enjoy tutorage from established figures in the music industry. Sheer determination and exploiting every opportunity being traits BIMM seems to encourage in their students. “Even if someone’s putting me on in a small venue, supporting a band that aren’t that popular, that’s still that person doing everything they can to support me.”

His interest in music stems from a young age. His older brother playing in an Irish band; he asked them for guitar lessons only to be presented with a mandolin. Becoming competent in this, a sense of sibling rivalry drove to learning the flute like his brother. The aptitude for music saw him trying several instruments, until he reached secondary school, where he realised he was the only kid in his class playing banjo. From then on the guitar was his focus. Singing came by accident. Whilst demonstrating how a particular musical phrase should sound, he discovered his voice was another utilisable instrument. Now people are respecting him increasingly for what he plays, and the effort he puts into performing. While at college in Warwickshire his tender age prevented him playing some venues. He decided to start open-mic nights, where he and similar artists could perform their work. It seems there’s a real need to perform. “There’s no other feeling like it. It’s just such a passion. I just love what I do.” This entrepreneurial approach has seen him perform over 500 shows at small venues and festivals in the last three years.

Working on music for commercial release is next for Dolman. He’s also assembling a band from his fellow students, with a view to playing more gigs and developing his sound. There’s just been an appearance at Music Week’s industry showcase RADAR in London, and next is a gig at The Haunt on Tue 2 Dec with Red Kites. “It’s bizarre, there’s nothing like it. But if that was all there was going to be then I’m happy, because I’m not falling short of what I was trying to achieve. It’s one step at a time.” When I ask what he wants to do there’s no definitive answer, but he’s had plenty of opportunities to work out what he doesn’t. “Everyone in music has had to do lots of things they didn’t want to do, just to fund their music. I’ve played at Hyde Park, but I’ve also travelled a hundred miles to play to a dog. The dog wasn’t even facing me. True story!” he laughs. “There’s always something you can take from everything you do.” www.twitter.com/joedolman96

After a lot of support from BBC Introducing the radio platform for emerging artists - he was given a slot at Radio 2’s epic Hyde Park festival, performing in front of a packed tent. “I couldn’t see anything other than people!”

Timber! If you go down to the woods today

A dynamic and scintillating show examining a culture lost to history, Timber! has been wowing audiences worldwide. This winter, the family circus treat heads to Brighton Dome, bringing with it live traditional music and dazzling feats of agility. Blending theatre, dance and the folklore of their native Quebec, Cirque Alfonse offer gravity-defying acrobatics and perform thrilling stunts with saws, axes and logs. “Many years ago our ancestors were working the woods during the winter. So we decided to keep their memory alive”, the show’s creator, Antoine Carabinier-Lepine, tells me, “We created Timber! at my parents’ place in a little barn.” More than being a group of random burly men blithely axe-juggling, this is a real family affair - Timber! stars three generations of the Carabinier family. Circus performer Antoine created Cirque Alfonse in 2005 along with his sister Julie, as a present for their father Alain. Julie’s partner, Jonathan Casaboun, and even their son Arthur, get involved. “We’ve been working together a long time, so we know each other quite well. That makes it easier to care

for each other.” Before forming in 2005, members of Cirque Alfonse had worked with the world’s most famous companies including Cirkus Cirkor, Cirque du Soleil and Les 7 Doigts de la Main. Four years ago the basis of a new show was born. Timber! is based on life in a lumber-camp near the Canadian village of Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez. This wood-chucking, axe-juggling homespun circus show is an unpretentious glimpse at the folklore, traditions and aesthetics of Québec’s lumberjack heritage. The show features thrills, spills, and some epic facial hair. “Everything we use in the show is real, the axes, the wood and beards. People think it’s not, but it is.” It’s a true family affair, you can tell that the whole cast are extremely close. Considering some of the routines, maybe this is vital. “We’re a real family, so that makes it quite special, you can read each other. So it makes it more safe, even though what we do isn’t so safe.” Deep in the forest, living within an isolated community away from the big city, how would a lumberjack fill his time during the long dark nights? “It was really tough for a man to do. So that’s what we try to show.” Far from being despondent wretches, cast adrift in terrible solitude, the Cirque Alfonse lumberjacks seem to inhabit a joyous, carefree world. Human

interaction may be scarce, but being alone with nature can bring with it a sense of wonder and exuberance. If that just isn’t enough, there’s plenty of fun to be had messing about with the sharp and pointy tools of your trade.

Bexhill On Sea

Starting off quite gently, Timber! gathers pace with amazing displays of strength and skill. With live music from their local band, there’s a carnival atmosphere deep in the woodland. It’s certainly a different kind of circus show. “It’s like the enjoyment after a day of work. You go back to the camp… you’re playing and fooling around. You’re just letting go of the day’s work.” Being within a group provides belonging. There’s certainly safety in living as a member of polite society, getting a good job, watching the right TV shows, having a family and buying plenty of nice things. But these trappings often distract from the inescapable questions of life. Loneliness is an unavoidable part of human existence. If we examine what lies behind the highs and lows of life, a common theme is the connection we share with others. We might be alone in the universe, but having the freedom to decide what we become is not a burden, it’s a blessing. The lumberjack’s life is a purer existence, unclouded by the trappings of mainstream society. A sense of belonging still binds for them, but it’s a simpler experience. They work hard and play hard, both of which seem to involve axes.

the sadness “We explore o rjack, but als of the lumbe r e th e g eing to the joy of b g in e ds, and b in the woo ith y around w able to pla V s without T simple thing or internet.”

Timber! also offers an environmental message. Extensive deforestation means we urgently need to be more respectful of nature. Changes have shaped the modern lumberjack’s role. An insatiable hunger for wood has seen this industry mechanised, whilst easy transportation and communication has made working in the forests less solitary. By keeping the lumberjack tradition alive, in a small way Cirque Alfonse reminds us how some progress isolates us from the natural world, and indeed our own nature. A serious statement, but it’s delivered with hope and joy. “It’s a fun show to watch and a fun show to do.” www.brightondome.org

Double-Mercury nominee Hopkins is becoming known for increasingly brilliant live performances. This is partly due to the visual element of his shows and the lighting and projections offering his music a subtle companion.

AUGUSTINES Sun 7 Dec Concorde 2

Concorde 2

The Detroit six-piece make a welcome return to Brighton. Fusing garage, disco, punk and rock, they sprung to fame in 2003 with the singles ‘High Voltage’ and ‘Gay Bar’. The latter notable for its video, which featured a highly homo-erotic portrayal of the Founding Fathers.

Their second album, imaginatively titled ‘Augustines’, has drawn critical acclaim and seen a huge influx of fans, all awed by their atmospheric brand of rock music. Rammed with raw power and emotion, almost every tune merges crashing drums and explosive guitar hooks.

Since then they’ve unleashed ten albums, and played hundreds of electrifying live shows all over the world. There’s no denying they play the Concorde 2 quite often. But if this legendary venue was looking for a house band, it’d be difficult to envisage one more entertaining than Electric Six!

With this talent for creating epic rock songs comes a similar ability to deliver them in a live arena. These guys have been smashing it on the festival circuit this summer. Sometimes a band knows how to write a song or rock a venue. It seems Augustines have an idea of both.

The music itself is deep, clubby and occasionally euphoric, melodic swirls and looped phrases intertwine. It veers between exercises in form and repetition to pounding beats and catchy choruses. But he’s not here just to move people’s feet, he also wants to move their hearts. And there’s no better venue to show what this intriguing electronic artist is capable of. www.brightondome.org

The Old Market The term ‘indefinable’ might get over-used, but I’ve no idea of where this show fits in. Offering ‘claustrophobic cinema clatter, epic short films and ground-breaking digital mapping’ a Nordic Giants show sits between conceptual art, immersive theatre and live sound-tracked cinema strangeness. These hairy Nordic legends are leaving Brighton, so leave us with a one off show called ‘Spirit’. To add to the abstract post-rock oddness, there’ll be limited edition ‘Build Seas, Dismantle Suns’ vinyl and Nordic Storm ale. Confusing, amusing and memorable, is this an art show or a muscle-bound concert? www.theoldmarket.com

Since her last trip down, she’s been checked by Katy Perry, made a cheeky cameo in Doctor Who and finally released her debut album. Foxes may have enjoyed success with Rudimental on the co-written ‘Right Here’ and with Fall Out Boy on ‘Just One Yesterday’, but as a solo artist is where she really shines. That debut, Glorious, is full of massive choruses, sly nods to the past and great, emotive pop riffs. Foxes has got a big heart, a big voice and even bigger songs.

The Hope Watford-based three piece The Spitfires have been together since September 2012, releasing three critically acclaimed singles. They’ve also been part of several advertising campaigns including for iconic clothing brands, including Merc, Baracuta, Dr. Martens and Brutus Trimfit. As you’d guess they look pretty good. An air of nostalgia hangs heavy over some young bands influenced by Britain’s musical past. The Spitfires though, take the past in true classic terms and bring it into 2014 with flair, power and energy both on and off the stage. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/hope

ALABAMA 3 Thu 11 Dec

Green Door Store

The Haunt

Concorde 2

Inarguably the most exciting band to come from Wick, this Scottish psychedelic-indie sixpiece has announced a UK tour for December. Amazingly they’ve been together for just over a year, spending their writing time crafting powerful psychedelic soundscapes in an isolated croft on the North Sea coast.

Godflesh are back for more. Justin Broadrick has got all of the dream pop out of his system and now is locked back in with his seminal metal/industrial outfit. Wildly innovative and inspirational, this band wrote the book on post-metal.

Get the biggest cowboy hat you can and push down to the front, there’s about to be a hoedown. Alabama 3 are on a 19-date tour this winter. They fuse techno, country and rock, whilst visually they look like the last and most debauched gang in town.

They’re managed by the same people as Noel Gallagher, and have been heavily featured by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens. The only concern is whether the intimate confines of the Green Door Store will be able to contain their massive guitar sound.

The hiatus and reconstruction have seen shades of melody creep into ‘A World Lit Only by Fire’, the first Godflesh album in 13 long years. But there’s still plenty of radical ugliness left to delight the hardcore fans. If torment, disgust and inexorability were converted into sound, would this be the product?

The Texan accents might be fake, the dancing hilariously awkward and the line-up ever evolving, but Alabama 3 are probably the coolest band to never emerge from the West. It’s a hard-living, boisterous and slightly odd celebration of everything great about entertainment.

The critically acclaimed progressive rocker and former forestry worker is on an extensive 13-date UK tour. The Edinburgh-born Fish released four highly successful albums with Marillion in the 80s, followed by ten solo albums between 1990 and 2013. A problem with his vocal chords temporarily put singing on hold in 2008. His intimate acoustic comeback shows in 2010 subsequently became one of the most successful tours of his career. Now he’s back in form and ready to bring his explosive live show to Brighton.

Man Ray Sky are taking take a break from ‘their busy lives as international super spies’ and play a rare hometown show to support the release of their new single. It’s a Christmas show from Brighton’s expansive psychedelic rockers, so expect some festive experimentation, improvisation and celebration! We might be in the depths of winter, but there’ll loads of sun-drenched indie rock oddness on offer. We’re still expecting great things from this quintet and their inquisitive minds, melodic guitar hazes and fuzzy electronica. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/hope

Brighton Dome Attention traditional corny rock acts, your demise is at hand. Your excessive line-ups and indulgent song structures are no longer relevant. Now just a bass and drums can blow away crowds. They might have a garage band set up, but Royal Blood sound colossal. Since being given the nod by the Arctic Monkeys’ drummer wearing one their shirts while headlining Glastonbury, Royal Blood are THE band on everyone’s lips. They might have missed out on the Mercury Prize, but despite this they are the only rock band worth anything right now.

Norman Pace

Theatre Royal Brighton Tue 16 Dec - Sun 4 Jan

One Man, Two Guvnors Two bosses walk into a hit show

Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors has seen astonishing success. In just four years, it’s delighted over a million people worldwide. Now the National Theatre are taking this production on the road once more for its biggest ever UK tour. An updating of Carlo Goldoni’s 1746 drama ‘The Servant of Two Masters’, this witty production fuses demanding physical comedy, farce and improvisation. We follow the misadventures of Francis Henshall, who finds himself in the service of two different gangland bosses: One is Rachel, a woman disguised as her dead twin brother Roscoe. The other is her estranged lover Stanley, responsible for the murder of Rachel’s sibling. Neither is aware of their conflicting staff arrangements, but they do yearn to be reunited. This is just the start of the confusion. It’s a colourful and chaotic glimpse into the sleazy underworld of 60s Brighton. “It’s highly organised chaos,” Norman Pace tells me. “The art of it is to make it look like it’s chaos, when you know exactly what you’re doing. That’s true of all comedy and of all acting.” Featuring Gavin Spokes as Francis Henshall, Alicia Davies as Rachel Crabbe and Patrick Warner as Stanley Stubbers, the cast sees Pace play Charlie ‘The Duck’ Clench. Once Roscoe’s prospective brother in law, he’s now another component in the comic confusion.

By Stuart Rolt

Just over 16 years ago, Pace was half of comedy duo Hale & Pace, crafting an anarchic world of crap children’s TV presenters, moody doormen and microwave misuse. These two former teachers enjoyed massive ratings over a decade of hilariously barbed sketches and uproarious musical numbers, repeatedly finding new, imaginative and occasionally controversial ways to challenge broadcasting standards. “I’ve no regrets at all. Gareth and I had a complete joyride. Look how far it went.” Although their work might not be treated with the same misty-eyed reverence as a few contemporaries, Hale & Pace produced one of the best and most viewed sketch shows of the last thirty years. “For me it’s a long time ago. But I am aware of the impression we made on people. It does seem, with comedy particularly, you always play to the generation behind you!” After spending 18 years bearing the pressure as one of the most recognisable faces on British TV and a demanding work schedule, it seems he’s relieved the clamour has gently ebbed away. “I’m in a different place now, but it’s a place I prefer. When Gareth and I were hot you couldn’t stop and put petrol in your car.”

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 23 ]

Regardless of his significant pedigree Pace still humbly views himself as a novice when it comes to acting. “I’ve been privileged to have learned on the job. It’s rather the wrong way round. I should be paying thousands to do acting school.” So now he’s repositioned himself in the entertainment industry. But taking to the stage could arguably be described as a return to his roots. “I first stepped on as an infant school kid and loved it. It’s my second childhood now, so I might as well carry on.” From his manner you get the feeling that Pace is consistently optimistic. Also, whilst remaining modest about his abilities, he certainly knows what he’s capable of and what he wants to achieve. Upon seeing One Man, Two Guvnors during its West End run he tasked his agent with assuring his involvement. Whether it’s down to raw talent, providence or good representation, Pace now finds himself in one of the National Theatre’s biggest touring productions. The tightly-woven plot and its broad appeal is the perfect place to demonstrate his all-embracing talents. Both Pace and the play come from a great tradition of British comic writing.

ic. I feel “It’s fantast e Who’d hav privileged. in be work g thought I’d . I onal Theatre for the Nati ld ht that wou never thoug ed.” have happen

After hugely successful runs in London, New York and Sydney, the National Theatre’s touring mega-hit is now visiting almost every corner of the UK. It seems regional touring is the NT’s answer to the challenges facing the arts in recent times. As we talk Pace is in Truro, there’s no denying he’s finding elements of the tour hectic. The previous run was up in Aberdeen, after which the cast flew to Manchester, enjoyed a four hour stopover before flying another four hours to Newquay. From here the journey featured a bus to Truro, then a search for food at 7pm on Sunday. “The National Theatre has a principle now to send their shows out to everybody. So if that means travelling 650 miles between venues, then so be it. You’re taking the message to the people.” This December One Man, Two Guvnors will see him returning to Theatre Royal Brighton, after last visiting with Annie Get Your Gun. This approaching stop-off is particularly welcome for Pace. It presents the play in the city of its setting, also the extended run brings other benefits for a touring cast. “Everyone’s really looking forward to it. I can unpack my case!” One Man, Two Guvnors comes to Theatre Royal Brighton on Tue 16 Dec - Sun 04 Jan.

DRACULA

MY SON & HEIR - SEARCH PARTY

NAKED BOYS READING

Tue 2 – Thu 4 Dec

Thu 4 Dec

Fri 5 Dec

The Old Market Jonathan Goddard plays the infamous vampire ‘Count’, whose sinister and ruthless ambitions challenge the fabric of Victorian society. As his victims and opponents rally against him they must face the darkness and savagery within themselves.

Marlborough Theatre My Son & Heir is an anarchic celebration of the everyday heroism of parenthood, set amongst a never-ending mess of plastic, flashing-beeping, bubble-blowing chaos. Search Party are parents, they have a son born in the same year as ‘Baby Cambridge’, and that’s where the similarities end.

Marlborough Theatre Neil Bartlett has selected a set of texts exploring the stickily sweet efforts of jouissance. From Wilde and Proust to Auden and Ginsburg, the desire to release pleasure with another is suffered. Ejaculatory, headspinning texts read by Peter Jacobs, John Pinney, Alfie Ordinary, Dexter Bailey and Louis MacGillivray.

A company of ten exceptional dancers bring Bram Stoker’s haunting, erotic tale to life in a heart wrenching and magical dance theatre production. With an eclectic mix of music from Bach and Mozart to Ligetti and Fred Frith, it explores choreographic styles ranging from the subtlety of classical etiquette to visceral contemporary dance.

This show confronts the spectacle of the ‘New Royals’ and their strategic attempts to appear just like us. It’s a playful examination of the relentlessness of raising children, and the guilt-ridden one-upmanship of mainstream baby culture.

What face do you pull? What sounds erupt from your chest? When was the last time you were cemented to your lover, skin stained onto skin? It’s gonna get messy; you asked for it.

Ray Quinn Holiday On Ice Doing it his way

By Stuart Rolt

Brighton Centre Tue 6 - Sun 11 Jan

For decades, a permanent fixture on the city’s festive calendar, Brighton will once again succumb to the allure of Holiday on Ice. In a celebration of its history, a new production - ‘Platinum’ celebrates the timeless charm which defines this touring ice spectacular. Taking a lavish journey through its 70 years of figure skating entertainment, this perennial favourite makes a welcome return to Brighton in January. So if you’re producing an ice spectacular, it’s only appropriate to feature the undisputed king of celebrity skaters. Since being second only to soul diva Leona Lewis on X Factor, Ray Quinn has continued to put his heart and soul into everything he undertakes. This includes winning ITV’s Dancing on Ice twice with his partner Maria Filippov. “I was so pleased with that,” he tells me. “It was a challenge, but I always want to win!”

of music from Brazilian electro to classical waltzes, swing and gospel to samba. With magnificent staging, captivating figureskaters, glamorous costumes and elaborate routines, Quinn is certain Platinum will wow the city. “We’ve been touring and rehearsing for a while, so it’s going to absolutely tip-top when it comes to Brighton. It’s a fantastic thing to look forward to.” Undeniably Quinn has embraced skating, but there’s a new stage in his career approaching fast. “It’s going to be my last ice skating show. I’m going to be concentrating on my music, but I wanted to do a skating show to say thank-you for what it’s taught me, given me and the achievements I’ve got out of it.”

When it comes to performing, Quinn has the complete skillset. He’s appeared in West End musicals, appeared in Brookside, been the first artist to have a UK chart-topping album without releasing a single and now he’s become a part of the most popular ice show in the world.

The return to singing sees an album next year and a single this month. He’s also taking a slightly new direction with his style. Whilst still retaining the familiar jazzy, big band edge, it’s now moving towards ballads. “It’s going old school. It’s just raw music that will touch people.” The new album has seen him work with such luminaries as Linda Lewis and Andy Roachford. There’s even a dance track floating about, which was recorded with his manager. “…It’s just because we can!”

Founded in Ohio as a small hotel show, Holiday on Ice has gone on to become a goliath in the live-entertainment world. Its travelled the globe ever since, visited 80 countries and thrilled over 325 million people. “The history of it was why I wanted to take part. If I ever was going to do another skating show it had to be the best!” Combining speed, daring lifts and awe-inspiring throws, the show is simultaneously thrilling and graceful. Sound-tracking the spectacle is a wide variety

While showbiz never previously ran in Quinn’s family, his West End actress wife, Emma and their two-year-old son Harry, both have performing traits. “He’s bang into entertaining people. He’s always bowing and singing. I know he’s going to be getting into what I do. But it’s great because we can help him.” This knowledge of the industry, combined with his passion for doing things his way, sees Quinn setting up his own record label to release his material. “I’m a bit of a chancer. But I never

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 41 ]

do anything by half.” Chancer perhaps, but now he’s taking charge of his destiny, without trend-obsessed and profitconscious record executives stifling his creativity.

There are even plans for a tour next year, after his stint with Holiday On Ice. Titled ‘Ray Quinn – Unplugged’ it will see him perform with a minimal set up, allowing the quality of his material and incredible voice to shine through. “I love what I do. I’ve been very blessed with so many things I’ve done in my career so far.” He’s humble, regardless of the considerable accomplishments for a man of his age, describing himself as nobody in the grand scheme. “Just because I’m Ray Quinn, doesn’t mean people are going to buy my music.” As much as he’s self-effacing it’s evident how passionate and resolute the singer is about what he does. Passionate is a good word, it could be applied to much of what he does and says, but most of all he’s passionate about the value of believing in yourself.

TAINMENT “THE ENTER GH OLD A TOU BUSINESS IS IN. YOU NEED E WORLD TO B IVE AND IT TO STAY POS YOU ARE . O H TRUE TO W NYONE TELL DON’T LET A ISE .” YOU OTHERW Naturally this Merseyside Sinatra appreciates the opportunity the X Factor presented him, but maintains that the hard work truly begins after the process ends. The dedication is paying off. Quinn’s had a sell-out tour recently, is performing in the world’s greatest ice show and confirmed his reputation as a total entertainer. So he’s justifiably proud of everything he’s working on and what’s already been realised. “It’s amazing what you can do when you pull your finger out,” he laughs. Holiday on Ice comes to the Brighton Centre on Tue 6 - Sun 11 Jan. www.brightoncentre.co.uk www.rayquinnworld.co.uk

FOIL, ARMS AND HOG - LOCH’D

ALAN DAVIES – LITTLE VICTORIES

BENT DOUBLE

Fri 5 - Sat 6 Dec

Sat 6 Dec

Sun 7 Dec Dome Concert Hall

Otherplace at Bar Broadway A Dublin-based trio that met at university, Foil, Arms & Hog are a finely tuned sketch troupe. Adored on YouTube and lauded at Edinburgh Fringe, the trio’s new show, Loch’d, offers us even more daftness. There’s an awkward intervention for a teetotaller, a Christian rock group called ‘God Vibrations’ which is harbouring an extremist, and some storytelling using the medium of a paper bag. These might be the product of three minds running wild, but the results are hilarious.

It was a long-awaited return to stand up, after years away being a foil to Stephen Fry on QI and solving crime on Jonathan Creek. Now Alan Davies capitalises on the massive success of his comeback tour, to give us another frank, moving, and hilariously funny exercise in great comedy. Silly, shrewd and smart, his highly anticipated follow up show, Little Victories, sees Davies delve into his family life. Some of it trying, some of it joyful, it offers a richly appealing insight into his existence as one of the UK’s comedic greats.

Otherplace at Bar Broadway Another edition of Otherplace’s monthly showcase, which offers leading comedians, circuit regulars and the very best newcomers the chance to try out their new material. This month, Matthew Crosby of Pappy’s will be performing a solo stand-up show.

Nelson’s performing this new offering, Suited and Booted, in a number of intimate venues, in preparation for his highly anticipated nationwide tour. Stereotypical, coarse, topical and very often deeply funny, there might be moments when it seems a little crass. But we should never forget this is irony at its very best.

Joining them on the bill are - ordinary housewife extraordinaire Mrs Barbara Nice and Zoe Lyons, who was described as “arguably Brighton’s finest comic talent” only a page ago. The strident Kate Lucas, and Chortle Best Newcomer - Sofie Hagen join them. It’s part of 16 Days to End Violence Against Women and is all compered by the edgy, sexy and hilarious Miss Behave.

As well as starring in BBC Three’s ‘Badults’, Crosby has popped up on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8/10 Cats. He’s also written for Mock The Week, Stand Up for the Week, The Now Show and Ask Rhod Gilbert. Student Fun at the Komedia There’s no greater than Krater

First dates. We’ve all been there. You scrutinise outfits, pretend you’re not scared and arrange to meet up in some ridiculously overcrowded student pub. Those initial nerves gently eradicated by several beers, a posh pizza and several more beers. A drunken snog if you’re lucky. A killer hangover. Text tennis. Suggestions of a second date. Being fairly new to Brighton, and being of the student variety (with matching budget), I wanted more than the aforementioned for my second date. I wanted to uncover more about my date, while having one of the best nights out Brighton has to offer. I wanted to impress him, so I got my hands on tickets for Krater Comedy Club at Komedia. Having had the Krater experience a few weeks before with about ten of my student buddies, I felt confident that the night wouldn’t disappoint, and that there might even be money left over to get the Number 25 home, with the brilliant student deals that they offer. Brighton’s longest standing comedy club has been packed out every weekend for more than ten years now, and there are lots of reasons why this is the case. The candle-lit cosy atmosphere, great bar, tasty menu and refreshingly efficient staff properly pave the pathway for super-quick compere Stephen Grant, who hand-picks the finest on the comedy circuit to grace his stage. You could call him a Comedy Guru with his extensive knowledge of who’s going to make you laugh yourself silly after over a decade of getting it so right. Krater has won The Chortle Award for best comedy club in the south eight times since 2002. So, back to my second date. Let’s just say the first date was drunken enough for my only anxiety to be whether I would even recognise him again. It was a rainy November night, and I knew the line-up was a good one, so was in a win-win situation. I arranged to meet my date with plenty of time to be seated in a not-too-near-

the-front-or the-back position. We were swiftly seated in a booth at the side, which felt a bit like a classy budget theatre box and ordered a bottle of robust Australian Merlot. Knowing that the stand-up wizardry wasn’t far away took the pressure off the fact that we couldn’t really remember what we’d told each other on date number one, but there was time to reflect on our busy and studious weeks while I repeatedly topped up his wine glass. After several glasses of laughterlube, there were going to be fewer laughter inhibitions and I would get a true taste of my date’s sense of humour. Equally, if he did any soul-destroying comedian heckling, it would mean I could almost certainly eliminate date number three. There was so much to potentially be unearthed, I felt like Tony Robinson on an episode of ‘Time Team’. As Stephen Grant took to his stage, it occurred to me that there was something missing, something that you see everywhere in almost every social setting. I could see no texting, no status-updating and no annoyingly blatant filming going on. Everyone’s focus was on the stage and everybody was in the moment together, and that was pretty extraordinary. Stephen Grant had everyone locked on him as he effortlessly annihilated the fools and unfortunates who’d ended up on the front row tables, which were mostly students. I got to watch three incredible silver-tongued comedians (Ian Moore, Joe Rountree and Addy Van de Borg) with the awesome comedy glue that is Stephen Grant, while seeing not only what made my date tick, but also his reaction to jokes about oral sex and poo. I was able to determine where he was on the political spectrum, how long he could go without looking at his phone, and what his laughter genuinely sounds like. I probably could have discovered more, but the wine was flowing, there were four very funny men to laugh at, and the rest of the night is a bit of a blur… www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

Life as an Extra Ready when you are Mr Goatman

By Eddie Goatman

Eddie posing in his background acting role Christian Bale as Moses

If you ever find yourself standing next to Sir Ridley Scott, Sir Ben Kingsley and Batman (Christian Bale) dressed in Biblical robes discussing how a scene is going to be filmed for a new movie called ‘Exodus’, then like me, you’d probably mistake yourself for dreaming. It’s only when you’ve pinched yourself for the fifth time that you realise that you’re actually living this dream and somehow you’ve landed yourself a part as an ‘extra’ in this retelling of Moses’ struggle to free his people from the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. In 2013, I signed up to a casting agency with expectations of nothing more than a few toothpaste adverts and maybe a part in Eastenders as a tramp walking round the market. Well I was mistaken, because apparently the ability to grow long hair and a good beard can find you some very fantastic roles indeed. This particular part started with a phone call from my agent asking me if I was free for a set of dates and keen to have archery lessons. The obvious answer of ‘yes’ came rushing from my lips as if they’d been waiting to say it all my life. After a few trips to the legendary Pinewood Studios to learn how to hold a Longbow and fire it so that it looks great on camera, it suddenly became a huge reality that the attention

to detail in the movie industry goes further than you think, right down to the costume department where people are employed to strategically place dust and dirt on you. My first few days on set were long but awe-inspiring. I was fascinated with how the cameramen and Assistant Directors picked up on certain things, which I, even as an avid film fan, wouldn’t even notice I was doing. They gave me props to hold and actions to make, little stories and scenes for your character to play out with everyone else. It was a great introduction to background acting and not long after that I found myself filming a live action version of Disney’s Cinderella, chatting with Daniel Radcliffe about music on the set of a new Frankenstein film and most recently watching Tom Cruise perform his own stunts on the latest Mission: Impossible movie. So next time you go to the cinema or watch a film at home, keep an eye out for that short hairy man who, to the average eye, is probably nothing more than a blur in the background. To you, he is acting his little heart out with eyes set firmly on accepting the Oscar for ‘Best Extra in a film’. Exodus: Gods and Kings is out Fri 26 December at cinemas nationwide

New To Cinema St Vincent – Fri 5 Dec For those who will never get enough of the great Bill Murray may be excited to know that he will be back on your screens for December. Theodore Melfi’s debut feature ‘St Vincent’ sees Murray as a cantankerous war veteran retiree, who is put in charge of watching his neighbor’s (Melissa McCarthy) 12-year old son after school. However, Vincent’s ideas of extra-curricular activities are less than savoury for this adolescent, promoting an adventure full of charm, personal growth and unlikely friendships.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies – Fri 12 Dec Well it must be Christmas time because Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf pals are back in cahoots with that long-bearded fellow and battling a ruddy big dragon. The Battle of the Five Armies is the third and final installment of The Hobbit film saga - directed by Peter Jackson – and the action definitely isn’t letting up. While Baggins and his band of merry men may have unleashed the wrath of Smaug on Lake-town, a darker force in lurking in Middle-Earth. Sauron has returned to launch an attack on Lonely Mountain, with help from a whole legion of deadly Orcs.

Dumb and Dumber To – Fri 19 Dec It’s hard to believe (for some of us older lot) that 20 years ago, best friends Harry and Lloyd jumped into the ‘Mutts Cutts’ floppyeared dog/van and took off on a hilarious Aspen-bound adventure to return a pretty lady’s briefcase. Now, both pals are older and not at all wiser, this time using what little wits they have between them to find Harry’s adopted daughter. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return in this Dumb and Dumber sequel, with the Farrelly Brothers once again taking the helm. You’ll like it. You’ll like it a lot.

Exodus: Gods and Kings – Fri 26 Dec There is ample opportunity for a pun in here about a movie epic of biblical proportions, but after Aronofsky’s abysmal Noah earlier this year, it would be bad luck to prematurely taint Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings. With a strong solid cast including Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Sigourney Weaver, we can hope for greatness from this cinematic re-telling of the ancient tale of Moses’ uprising against the Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses. Along with this and The Hobbit, this December is going to be a blockbuster-packed month.

No. 32 Not Just A Number Restaurants, to me, can often mean quite an anxious experience. If the setting is too formal, I feel a constant need to feign a bizarre level of politeness; too afraid to relax and saying yes to everything whether I want it or not. On the other hand if I’m not that hungry, I feel the waitress’ glare behind her ‘service’ smile, cursing me for taking up a table that could be housed with extravagantly generous diners, instead of this girl with her one Diet Coke and small starter as a main. The point I’m making is I find it hard to seek out an eating place suited for whatever mood may take me, where I am allowed to take my time and feel free to order as and when I choose. When my partner and I visited No. 32 on a hideously wet Sunday afternoon, the exterior seemed much more intimidating than what we found inside. Despite its grand immense space, most of the tables in this restaurant/bar/dancing venue (and everything else) felt secluded and cosy, with booths lining the sides. Having lost the haughtiness of Havana (its predecessor), this was a place I could get on board with. From couples and business meetings to families and a group of men who had clearly partied too hard the night before, No. 32 seemed welcoming to all types. Since its motto is ‘Eat. Drink. Dance’, it was not surprising that the drinks menu was extensive. While my guest chose a mellow Flying Dog Pale Ale (£5.50), I opted for the signature ‘No. 32’ cocktail (£8.50). While perfectly tasty, the long list of ingredients were lost to the more simple flavours of citrus and berries. It did arrive with a little lime nest of strawberry slices sitting on top so I was easily pleased.

32 Duke Street Brighton BN1 1AG

By Holly Cozens

As we perused the food menu, my partner commented on the wide choice of brunch, burgers, steak and even Sunday Roast. There were even neat little details about where exactly the food is sourced. While this is not uncommon in Brighton, it is to the point and unpretentious in its disclosure. People say you can always tell how good a restaurant is by the quality of its steak, so while he chose a medium-rare ribeye (£18) with hand-cut fries (£3), I went for the Chicken breast with charred pumpkin, hazelnuts and mixed seeds (£12). The steak? Cooked to perfect specification while the chicken was a sweet yet earthy combination, a great alternative for those who want something more special than a salad but not so heavy as a burger and chips. Of course, while the mains took a bit of deliberation, the dessert was a no-brainer. Toblerone Brownie with Nutella Ice Cream and Bourbon Caramel Sauce (£7) topped off our lazy afternoon. Pre-warned by the staff as a big portion, this was an ideal sharing option. Dense, rich and gooey with smooth chocolate ice cream and a thick smoky sauce. So if, like me, you want no more than to disappear into a big comfy booth for the evening, pop somewhere for a quiet coffee and cake or even dance your socks off with some fruity cocktails on a Saturday night, give No. 32 a go. It has elegance, charm and some darn good steak.

Vanilla Pod It’s nice, nice baby I neglect cafés. I’m not entirely sure why but it seems to be one of those things. I’ll run in to one of the big boys of the coffeeshop world and down a latte on my way in to work, and that’s it. The thing with chain stores selling teas, cakes and coffees is that the products are always exactly the same. Wherever you go it’s the same story. Don’t get me wrong; it’s great to have consistency but where is the character? The charm that pulls you in, in the first place? It’s melted away from most high streets, except Western Road. Well, 52 Lansdowne Place if you want to be precise. The smart building – large windows cutting into cream walls – welcomed me and my dining partner very warmly. The high ceilings are classic Brighton (Hove, actually) and compliment the interior of Vanilla Pod. The café isn’t huge but the ceilings certainly make it feel much airier and larger. From the word ‘go’, we were made to feel as if we were old regulars. Seb, the owner, greeted us at the door and gave us the option of two tables so we picked a quiet corner and settled in. Seb soon popped back to our table to take our order. We were dithering slightly so started with coffees. After the first sip of my latte (£2.45), served in a lovely big mug and matching saucer, I knew we were on to a winner. We even had little butter biscuits to enjoy with our drinks. Seb told us that they use Small Batch (Goldstone Espresso blend) so that explained the awesome taste, that and the care put into making it. The staff have undergone Small Batch’s training course so know their coffee beautifully made and consistent! My friend had an Americano (£2.20) to start with, served with hot milk on the side in a miniature milk bottle – a nice touch.

52 Lansdowne Place Hove BN3 1FG

By Freya Hughes My companion ordered a sausage sarnie (£4.95) served with homemade tomato chutney, which I’m told was fresh and duly complimented the sandwich. The Cumberland sausages made for a filling and decent-sized lunch. I, on the other hand, went for a field mushroom stuffed with rarebit mix (not too mustard-y, brownie points for that) served on toast (£4.95). I loved it. The cheese was at the perfect bubbling-but-notbrowning-off stage and the fresh bread hailed from a few doors down at the Real Patisserie. Apart from the bread, we are told everything is made/baked in-house. Vanilla Pod makes a point of catering for as many dietary requirements as possible, stocking gluten free, lactose free and vegan produce alongside their other dishes. Hoping to try something festive, as Christmas is careering towards us at breakneck speed, I was told that Vanilla Pod will be serving seasonal spiced baked goods, though we’d come too early for such pleasantries. I’m going back as soon as I get the tip off about the butter biscuits coming with cinnamon flavours and homemade mince pies with a sneaky bit of fresh Clementine at the bottom to keep them juicy. Following our delicious lunches, we sat back for a moment and enjoyed the calm but upbeat music playing away in the background. We had another cup of coffee as we shared a delightful apple and caramel bakewell tart (£2.74). Lightly dusted with icing sugar and served with fresh blueberries and a strawberry, the sweet treat was a great finish to a lovely afternoon.

The Anchor Bar Drinks aweigh! Breaking Bad. I’ve found it difficult, well to be honest near impossible, to think or talk about anything other than Breaking Bad recently. It’s not even the first time I’ve watched it... I’ve seen every single episode before. I know more about Walter White than I do my own relatives; so it would take a lot to rip me away from my dysfunctional meth-cooking family. However a critic’s work is never done, so I shimmied my vitamin D deficient self down to the Anchor Bar on Edward Street to give their Mexican food and cocktails the once over. Walking in, the first thing that smacks you around the face is how incredibly cute the place is - we are talking newborn puppies opening their eyes for the first time levels of cuteness. Cosy and unpretentious; the white walls, exposed brick and candles make it the perfect spot to escape the crowds piling towards the bustle of the shops, purchasing they’re-nowfashionable-because-they’re-so-crap Christmas jumpers. It feels like the Santa’s Grotto of the drinking world… a lovely warm and happy place to get a wee bit tipsy. I started with one of their cocktails, which are mostly classics re-named as local places and landmarks. I tried one of the ‘off-piste’ selections ‘Hove Park’, which is the brainchild of the friendly owner Liz, and consists of Spiced Rum, Red Wine, Goldschläger, Orange Juice and Fresh Orange. Quite simply this couldn’t have tasted more warm and Christmassy unless it was accompanied by the Queen sitting on a bed of turkey and flanked by Rudolph. I also sampled the ‘Hove Lawns’, which was Raspberry Liquor, Prosecco and Fresh Lime. It tasted fruity, refreshing and utterly gorgeous. Normally these lovely cocktails are £7 each, but on certain nights (usually over weekends) you can get two for the bargain sum of a tenner.

142-143 Edward Street Brighton, BN2 0JG

By Lucy Hallett So after the very tricky task of lifting my drinks up to my mouth, I’d worked up a hunger and there’s not much that makes me hungrier than the mention of Mexican food. I ordered a plate of Chilli Beef Nachos to start (£7.95) and these were quite simply the biggest most scrumptious plate of nachos I’ve ever seen. To say they would satiate the hunger of at least three big guys would possibly be under-selling them. The veritable mountain of crisp, fresh tortilla chips, nestled among sour cream, guacamole, salsa and melted cheese was flanked by a beautiful heap of Chilli Con Carne. The Chilli was so perfectly spiced and succulent that I didn’t even care that I looked like a scavenger while dunking nacho after nacho into the tasty mound. Feeling oh-so-content, but letting my greediness take over and wondering what awaited me next, I was happy to see the arrival of the Pulled Pork Baked Enchiladas (£7.50). Filled to bursting with tasty rice, onions, peppers, and a gorgeously big amount of pulled pork I was in Mexican heaven. The melted cheese enveloping the soft tortilla wrap encased the pulled pork in such a gentle and satisfying way that I nearly fell off my chair and did a little victory lap around the bar. It would be nice if Brighton was still the unique little snowflake it used to be, but increasingly the big chain pubs under the guise of being original, permeate its corners. The Anchor Bar is a genuinely cool, cosy and happy place to spend some time, and if you want a great cocktail and a massive plate of gorgeous Mexican food, then it has to be your next stop. www.anchor-bar.com

Be Gluten Free By Mila Statham

Gluten Free Mince Pies Recipe (Makes approximately 18) 150g Plain Gluten Free Flour blend (Doves Farm) 50g Self Raising Gluten Free Flour blend (Doves Farm) 100g margarine 2 tbsp caster sugar 200ml cold water (you might not need to use it all) 1/2 a jar of mincemeat 1-2 tsp icing sugar Measure the flours and sugar into a mixing bowl. Add the margarine and mix with a fork until you have a breadcrumb-like texture. Next, add the water a drop at a time whilst mixing gently until it binds. Remember that you will not necessarily need to use all of the water. Once the mixture starts to bind, ditch the fork and use floured hands to combine into a pastry dough - if it feels too wet then add extra flour. Wrap in cling film and set in the fridge for half an hour. Preheat the oven to 180c. On a floured surface, roll out the pastry to just a bit thicker than a pound coin. Using a 6 cm cutter cut out circles and place in a small (6 cm), greased bun tin. Top each pastry case with a very small teaspoon of mincemeat.

Marks & Spencers Gluten Free Christmas Range

With the remaining pastry, roll out again (add a drop of water if it starts cracking) and cut out small star shapes and top the mincemeat with them. Gently press the edges down.

Marks and Spencer has always been good for gluten free sausages, cakes, fish cakes and breaded fish and chicken etc. But at christmas it is the best place to go for festive gluten free food.

Bake in the oven the preheated oven for approximately 10 - 12 minutes, until golden then allow to cool on a wire rack.

On the run up to christmas the shelves usually get stocked with a fabulous range of christmas treats.

Using a small sieve, dust with a little icing sugar. They should keep for a few days in an airtight container. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 - 20 minutes until golden.

It is quite an extensive range and in some stores can include mince pies, christmas cakes, christmas pudding, stuffing balls, cocktail sausages, pigs in blankets, stuffings, gravy and bread sauce.
