NEWS

BRIGHTON News When you think of February, you probably don’t think of radio controlled cars and robot invasions. But this is Brighton, so think outside the box. If you’re into your Science, you love discovery and debates about the future, you’re going to be a busy bee with Brighton Science Festival 2012. Calling all geeks*cough cough* prepare your spectacles for a physics funfair kicking off on the 1st February with a 13.72 minute talk covering everything from the Big Bang to Big Brother – that’s one minute per billion years and apparently it’s doable. With events and workshops happening across the month and town make sure your diary’s formula goes off with a bang.

Once again, we have famous faces

popping up at the Brighton Centre with concerts from chart toppers Olly Murs and The Wanted, as well as soothing operatics from the wonderful Katherine Jenkins. Book your tickets early peeps, can’t stress that enough.

Naturally, Brighton’s nightlife lives

up to its name with a host of DJs and live music events at ever more popular venues across town including Life, Digital, Audio and Komedia to name a few. Check out BN1’s listings at the back for details; we’ve done the hard work for you. Finally with Valentine’s Day it’s time to show your loved ones how much you appreciate them (a box of chocolates will do, dear) and since it’s a leap year, it’s traditional for women to propose on the 29th, so our congratulations in advance. 4 bn1magazine.co.uk

BIRDEATSBABY

BIRDEATSBABY Feast of Hammers (Dead Round Eye) These local theatrical types have been around town for a while now, often playing interesting little venues to those lucky enough to stumble upon them on any given night and experience their maudlin, blues/angst-ridden songs. Think Dresden Dolls; a more poppy version of latter-day Lydia Lunch, as well as a whole blustering of classical elements thanks to the string section and you should get where they are coming from. This album, released around the middle of the month, doesn’t veer too much from their musical blueprint and will be a delight to fans both old and new. They play an album launch party on February 15th at the Ranelagh pub on St James’s St and what’s more it’s free entry! By Brad M

JOHNNY WORE BLACK All The Rage (Dead Cherry) I must confess when I was initially given this by my gracious editor I kinda guessed I wouldn’t like it as it mentioned some dude from Megadeth way too much on the cover and well, I ain’t a fan of them or that type of music. However, once I got over my snobbery, I gave it a listen and it’s not what I expected at all. What we have is in fact a typical slice of American sounding AOR that is kind of reminiscent of the music that dominated the 80s charts but this comes with a message of support for charities like Help for Heroes and that can only be a good thing. By Brad M

Deadbeat Descendants ‘Calibrate Now! Brighton’s live music scene stalwarts Deadbeat Descendants get their retro-groove on with their new album Calibrate Now! Owing a great deal to the timeless 60’s garage punk styling of MC5 and The Stooges, the band take a noisy hardrocking sideways look at modern life. The lyrics are shrewdly mocking and the guitars are brutal, this is the perfect antidote to all the vapid simpering pop that pervades our lives. I want to be at one of their parties. SPECIAL FEATURE

Science Festival Brighton Science Festival 2012 aims to smash the preconceptions that science is solely the dominion of corduroyclad boffins and highlight its practical applications throughout our everyday lives. Taking place at various venues around the city and dealing with all aspects of the scientific realm, from commercially applicable technologies to the whacky domain of fringe sciences, this month long event aims to educate and entertain. By Stuart Rolt QUABINET OF QUANTUM QURIOSITY Flavour of the decade, the elusive Higgs boson particle, and many mysteries of Quantum theory will be discussed at the Quabinet of Quantum Quriosity on the 19th.

SIMPLY BRILLIANT PHYSICS The Simply Brilliant physics evening on the 22nd, with English über-inventor Trevor Bayliss, will showing us all the true meaning of intelligent design.

HUMANIST SOCIETY On the 1st Brighton and Hove Humanist Society will be bravely attempting to cover everything from the dawn of time to Big Brother in 13.72 minutes – that’s a breath-taking one minute per billion years.

24 bn1magazine.co.uk

FAMILY FUN DAYS The first weekend of the Festival (11th and 12th) sees the popular Family Fun Days at Hove Park School. Children aged 7-14 will get inspired by the creative, messy, loud side of science, with help from real sheep, real explosions, cloud chambers, a snotty nose big enough to crawl through and very much more.

COMICAL SPIN In case all this gets a little too heavy, then Robin Ince, Marcus Brigstocke, The Festival of the Spoken Nerd and Helen Keen will all be putting a comical spin on science.

RUPERT SHELDRAKE If you want your mind bent, try out the edgy scientific ideas of Rupert Sheldrake, author of the Science Delusion on the 20th.

MAKE YOUR MIND UP TIME For the very brave why not try Make Your Mind Up Time on the 26th where you’ll delve into the murky world of consciousness and how much of our world is a figment of our imagination. Bring your loved ones and see if you still think they exist at the end of the day.

CATALYST CLUB Brighton’s famous Catalyst Club will host two specials. First a Catastrophe Club on the 9th where they cheerily look forward to the end of the world, followed by a soothing Catalyst Goes Cuddly on the 23rd where three speakers will revel in the delights of custard, computer games and hedgehogs.

BIG SCIENCE SATURDAY The usual centrepiece of the Science Festival is the Big Science Saturday on the 25th, which this year will be investigating swearing as pain relief, how to age well, the mathematics of Olympic athletes and turning water into wine.

AT THE DUKE OF YORKS As part of the event The Duke of Yorks will be getting into the spirit of the proceedings by Hosting special film screenings of The Day The Earth Caught Fire on the 17th and Mulholland Drive on the 26th.

FOR THE KIDS As always there will be special events aimed at children throughout half term, including How to be Magic on the 12th, the wonderfully named Chewy, Gummy, Physics Factory on the 18th and special theme days focussing on ecology, food and the science of crafts.

How did you get into the world of comedy? I started lying my way into nights when I was seventeen – you’d be amazed how rubbish your ID can be when they really need people through the door. I did it till I was about twenty, by which point I hated it so much I refused to step foot inside a comedy club for seven years. I got back into it when I finally realised I was a normal person doing something very difficult and I didn’t have to try and be a genius. I also did the Jill Edwards stand-up course at the Komedia. It teaches you excellent technique – she’s a black belt in stand-up.

What’s been your most memorable gig, and what happened? When I was nineteen I did a Comic Relief gig in a horrible pub in Amersham. Before the show, somebody got coshed at the bar – not even glassed, coshed. They had coshes in there. A few people went on before me and died terribly.

None of my jokes got even the slightest laugh, but then fortunately I saw this guy at the front who was so drunk he was practically dancing about to my set. Quick as a flash, I hit on the idea of making him do different dances, taking requests from the crowd, who loved it. I was shouting ‘Dance for me! Dance for me!’, while they all clapped along. I felt kind of bad, but him being so plastered saved my hide, so I felt pretty pleased at my ingenuity until after the gig I found out he hadn’t been drunk at all. A couple of years before he’d come off his motorbike without a helmet. Everyone there knew him.

Do you have any comedy heroes?

Eddie Izzard, Mitch Hedberg, Hannibal Buress... that guy especially you have to check out on Youtube.

What are your plans for future events, both locally and beyond?

Locally, I’m going to continue working on my night Laughtermath, which as of March is moving to The Caroline of Brunswick. I’m pretty stoked about a new night I’m setting up with Sami Stone at The Old Market Theatre, called Laughtermarket (see what we did there?). You should come check that one out, because it’s going to be frankly amazing, and only £1.50. Although good comedy has no price. To put that into perspective, bad comedy often costs about five pounds. Speaking on a more global scale, I think the future event we’ll all planning for is the Zombie Apocalypse. We don’t have many guns in this country so I’m going to use a baseball bat. It’s essentially a club, the most basic weapon devised by man. I don’t think I have it in me to stab someone, even the undead. I did stab myself once, below my left buttock. I wasn’t trying to though - I was trying to cut spring onions. I must have hit something because the blood came out in a great parabolic arc with every heartbeat. It’s like my

What do you like about living in Brighton? The way you’ll often see all the eccentricity of a normal town compressed into one person. Some dude with five watches on his arm and a plastic doll, or wearing a magic hat with his trousers held up with string. These are my people.

CULTURE ARTS

Arts FEBRUARY IS HERE and it’s time to put away those detox

books and running shoes and reach for the chocolate boxes, balloons and teddy bears…or sick buckets depending on which way you’re inclined. So whether you’re after creative ideas on how to impress your loved one or simply looking to escape all that is pink, fluffy and nauseating, here are some of my top visual treats of the month. By Faye Morrison

I HEART U The JAG gallery and open studios, located on Madeira drive, has certainly embraced the romantic motif. It stages ‘I heART U’ on the 5th; a Valentines-themed event which features, among others, the new collection of mixed-media and Brighton-inspired work by local artist Ryan Brown. Entertainment, drinks and their mysterious invention ‘Speed Arting’ (whatever that is) will all be on offer, topped off by an evening auction at 8pm; held in support of the Argus Appeal. of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text.

ART LOVERS The Park View pub on Preston Drove has also jumped on the love-waggon; hosting a Valentine’s Day private view of their ‘Art Lovers’ exhibition between 6 and 10:30pm. The work of a number of up-andcoming local talents, including mixed-media artist Penelope Oakley, will be on display.

Broken Ground Fortunately for those those cynics among you, the Phoenix Gallery appear to have missed the heart-shaped memo and is instead displaying ‘Broken Ground’ from the 11th. This exhibition of large prints by Canadian artist Derek Besant explores the theme of urban destruction; featuring reconstructed photographic images of building sites from around the globe. By capturing the various stages of excavation, Besant looks to display the role of redevelopment in exposing the layers of a city’s past.

Intuition and Ingenuity Lighthouse, located on Kensington Street, is catering for the art-loving geek throughout this month with their new exhibition. On show as part of Brighton Science Festival, ‘Intuition and Ingenuity’ celebrates the centenary anniversary of the birth of father of modern computing: Alan Turing. It brings together the work of a range of scientific artists, including Roman Verostko, boredomresearch and Patrick Tresset, in an exploration of the continuing influence of Turing’s life and work on art and contemporary culture.

So, regardless of relationship status, why not fall in love with Brighton’s ever brilliant art scene this Valentines!

BEX AND THE CITY SPECIAL REPORT

Bex and the City Your guide to Bargain Brighton (and who knows, maybe further a-field if there are any good deals on Trainline.com…….)

Now, rumour has that most Brighton people’s idea of retail heaven might be marching around the posh shops in The Lanes, a Topshop perusal, or even a souldestroying tussle in Primark. I reached for the nearest bag for life, filled it with pre-loved apparel and headed to Brighton’s shopping mecca; London Road. Whether you’re new to Brighton or, like me, an old-timer, you’re probably familiar with the charity shop clusters, and London Road is the backdrop for one of Brighton’s finest Charity shop collections. Nestled among shops that refuse to be expensive, the confusingly ‘boutique’ to the fabulously frowzy are bursting with great threads for less than the price of a pint. Designer labels snuggle up to seventies tracksuits, and vintage dresses long to be worn again. There’s something a bit magical about charity shops,
