LIKE TRUE BRITS WE’VE ALL BEEN GRUNTING ABOUT THOSE RAINY DAYS SINCE WE OFFICIALLY WELCOMED IN THE GREAT BRITISH SUMMER LAST MONTH. IT’S BEEN PATCHY, TO SAY THE LEAST, BUT THAT HASN’T STOPPED BRIGHTONIANS FIRING UP THEIR BBQS AND FLOCKING TO THE BEACH AS SOON AS THE SUN HAS COME OUT. As we welcome in July, let’s just hope it stays out a little longer. With so much going on this month, who can deny that getting involved in the happenings around town is so much better enjoyed beneath some rays. We’ve seen a busy June, with Brighton Fashion Week dressing up the coast in skinny jeans and designer shades. Not to mention the hype around Glastonbury, with headliners including the bootylicious Beyonce, U2, Coldplay and, of course, our very own Fatboy Slim took to the stage. Since we’ve just about been lucky enough to avoid sailing round Glasto in flooded-out tents, one of our favourites for July, Paddle Round the Pier, returns with the chance to sail around the West Pier in the most ridiculous vessels ever seen or created. Bare witness to the frolicking of this seaside town as we admire the handiwork and imagination behind ‘Paddle Something Unusual’. Taking to the seas, anything and everything goes as long as it floats and the motto of this fine event seems to be the crazier the better. With a record breaking 50,000 people expected to attend, this year should be bigger than ever. So come down and take part in the activities including an enormous paddle sand pit on the promenade. No more moaning about the bumpy pebbles on the beach then! There are also plenty of excuses to get your active-wear gear on with the UK Footvolley Championships coming to Brighton on 9th July. Originating from Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, the sport combines football with volleyball and promises to be an exciting battle of flexibility and skill. Don’t worry, if you haven’t done your stretches for awhile you can watch from the sidelines for free; I know that is where I’ll be. The Capital to Coast bike ride will also see hundreds take to their wheels in aid of charity, so dig deep and support these dedicated cyclists or take part if you’re up for a challenge. As usual, Brighton will be overflowing with musical talent throughout the month with artists including The Eels taking to the Brighton Dome stage on 6th July. The Brighton Centre will see The Script perform a special one off show on 17th July. Komedia will see the UK’s number one David Bowie tribute act on 29th July and The Rolling Stones tribute act on 8th July faithfully taking you through the years with an uncanny resemblance. Flicking through our now jam-packed diary for July, we thank you Brighton for giving us a town so enchanting and alive. With so much happening, there is no excuse not to get out there and soak up everything this town has to offer. If we’re lucky, a heat wave might be on its way. So I’ll see you down the beach and, for sure, at the Brighton Beer Festival, July 14th – 17th. They’re two places most definitely worth spending your time.

GARDEN GADABOUT Opening their garden gates to the public across two weekends in June and July, Garden Gadabout offers a scenic look at a variety of gorgeous grounds and community spaces. Exhibiting a fusion of bold contemporary designs with quiet havens of wildlife, the event raises vital funds for The Sussex Beacon, whilst giving you a beautiful insight into small city centre courtyards and expansive sweeping spaces. “Personally, I love visiting the gardens and offering encouragement as well as experiencing each individual’s own way of creating something special with their plots, large or small,” says Bridgette Saunders, the Garden Gadabout coordinator. PADDLE ROUND THE PIER

Europe’s largest annual free beach festival returns to the sunny south coast on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July - for all those who love a bit of fun as well as those serious athletic competitors out there. With sights set bigger than last year, the beachfront will be buzzing with sea, land and air sports demonstrations and retails stalls, live music performances and entertainment for the whole family. Latest activities confirmed for this year include a huge ‘Paddle Sand-Pit’ where 100 tonnes of donated sand on the promenade offers a range of activities from have-a-go sessions with Volley Ball England, Surf Livesaving GB to sandcastle play sessions for the kids. Hoping to break the attendance record with over 50,000 visitors this year, the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’ may be the most attention-grabbing event. Social teams and businesses are invited

THE BAREFOOT OPEN – UK FOOTVOLLEY CHAMPIONSHIPS Brighton’s having a Brazilian this July when the South American sport of footvolley comes to town for the fifth year running. Complementing Brighton’s trend for hosting the unexpected, top international teams will kick off a dynamic battle on the sand as they combine beach volleyball and football with an acrobatic flair. The event on Saturday 9th July invites you to watch from the comfort of a free deckchair as well as the opportunity to take part in wine tasting with Barefoot wine, a free foot massage, a ‘keepy uppy’ competition and a chance to have a go at footvolley yourself. CAPITAL TO COAST Jumping on their bikes for the sixteenth year running, the alternative London to Brighton Bike ride takes place on the 10th July raising funds for three charities; Norwood, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Down’s Syndrome Association. With three separate routes, get involved or support with plenty of cheer as determined bikers cycle either a sixty mile London to Hove route, a circular Hove route or a thirty mile Haywards Heath to Hove route. Last year, more than 1,500 cyclists took part raising over £250,000 for charity. Help make this year even more successful.

BRIGHTON BEER FESTIVAL Get your goggles on for a brand new beer festival promising over 250 top quality ales, lagers, ciders and stouts from around the world. LOU TAYLOR – PAPER FESTIVAL EXHIBITION Welcoming talent and originality to the Brighton Dome, Brighton based illustrator and prop designer Lou Taylor will be exhibiting her work specialising in the creative use of paper. Demonstrating a love for pattern and colour, her intricate designs are inspiring and her contributions to publications have included Twenty6 magazine, Betty Magazine and Spindle Magazine. From the 15 June – 17 July, work included as part of the Brighton Dome’s Paper Festival will also see covers of Vogue Magazine from the 1920s. FESTIVAL OF SPEED This sound of cars roaring up the famous hill at Goodwood may not be quite loud enough to be heard in Brighton, but being only a short drive away, it’s easy to witness it for yourself. One of the world’s most prestigious automotive events is hosted by Lord March, something he’s been doing now since 1993. And each year it just gets bigger and better, with more cars and more activities. It also attracts some of the world’s best drivers from F1 to Indy 500 and rallying. Nowhere else can you get quite so ‘up close and personal’ with the latest supercars or get to see a Grand Prix car doing a doughnut on the track. But the Festival is also famous for the huge central sculpture in front of Goodwood House. Sponsored by a different marque each year, this time it’s the turn of Jaguar whose iconic E-Type is celebrating its 50th birthday. Always designed by Gerry Judah, all we know is it will be 28m high, but judging by his previous installations we can expect something that’s both eyecatching and gravity-defying. WHITE MINK July’s White Mink full moon party boasts a stellar line up with the addition of Broken Hearts, the distinctive female DJ-ing duo described by Time Out as “Turntable goddesses”. As Dj’s, Broken Hearts, (Nisha and Amber), play live and on the radio. Their eclectic mix of music and wild elaborate shows have earned them many fans whilst their cutting edge foray into fashion has seen them play for brands such as Vivi-

enne Westwood and Selfridges. Since May the pair have hosted their own show, Peppermint Candy, on Jazz FM and they can also be heard on BBC Sussex the Sunday before White Mink. The headline slot comes as part of a busy summer tour which takes the electro-pop outfit to play Toronto’s North by North East festival, Bestival, and perform live on MTV. Their follow up album to debut Heroes and High Heels is set to be released soon and is produced by legendary dance producer Andy Gray (Gary Numan, Paul Oakenfold). WITH GOSSIP OF ANIMAL COSTUMES, MAGIC, CABARET, WALK-ABOUT PERFORMANCES AND INSTALLATION ART SKIPPING BETWEEN EARS AROUND THE CITY, WE WERE MORE THAN INTRIGUED TO FIND OUT MORE, WE SENT STUART ROLT TO INVESTIGATE. Playgroup has grown out of one thing, a burning passion for having a great time. From humble beginnings at the Volks Tavern to running some of the best and most imaginative parties the town has ever seen. Now Playgroup’s directors, Declan Cassidy and Philip Lakka, have turned their attentions to developing their very own venue and looking forwards to the second year of their widely-acclaimed festival.

BEGINNINGS Cassidy started Playgroup as a club night in 2005 with the aim of providing something different to the average night out. “I just got bored of going to club nights with two different types of music, that weren’t really that different, with everyone focussed on the DJ,” explains Cassidy. “People just loved what we were doing and it just got bigger.” “It became known as a festival in a club,” Lakka chips in: “That was the point. The accessibility and variety of music and entertainment was very important. There was silliness and sunshine. There was face-painting, cake and you could meet all sorts of different people.” “You could turn up no matter what mood you were in and there was the option of sitting in a corner playing 8-bit video games or waltzing on the stage. At the time that was quite refreshing for people.”

A FESTIVAL FOR PEOPLE The natural progression for Playgroup, considering they had already been labelled as a “festival in a club”, was to go ahead and hold a proper festival of their own last year. Lakka explains their ethos: “We don’t like big festivals. There is a bridge between the performer and the audience. We prefer to be more immersive activity based. There’s more chance to mingle or check out bands you’ve never heard before. You can find your headspace and do silly things that you’ve never done before.” “The most important part of it is the people,” Cassidy asserts. “They create the atmosphere. If you can provide that space and make it as happy and immersive as possible, then the rest of the people will do all the work for you. If you are living in a town like Brighton, where all the people are so amazing, creative and so wonderfully up for anything, then it makes running the festival easier. You can’t ask for a better city to produce a festival near.” Situated on one of the country’s biggest, and possibly most beautiful, private estates this year’s Playgroup festival is twice as big, and is pitched to include a family friendly vibe. “It’s not just music though,” Lakka maintains. “This year has strong elements of installation art, magic, cabaret, walk-about performances and film. All of it’s done in a way that is engaging.”

THIS YEAR With a ticket to the Playgroup festival each happy camper will be assigned an animal to dress up as if they want to be part of the weekend’s woodland creatures theme. Subsequently there’ll be various events, such as happy hours at all the festivals bars, for each of the ten different creatures. As you’d expect, there are the usual weird and wonderful spectacles planned for the weekend. Such as quantum physics for the under-fives, the world’s smallest bar, another bar called “Hooters” staffed by slutty owls, communal artworks created over the weekend, a film studio where people can re-enact scenes from their favourite movies which will be shown throughout the festival and the worst theme park in the world.

A DEDICATED IPHONE APP An iPhone app is being specially created for the festival that will enable users to experience an alternative reality (in case the current one isn’t exhilarating enough). Users can look round the site through their phone screens to discover what has been left for them.

BRIGHTON TALENT Cassidy and Lakka maintain that all the best performers at UK festivals are Brighton based, yet there is no big local event that provides a platform for this enormous pool of talent. “We view Brighton as the cultural hub for this area”, Lakka says. “95% of the Playgroup festival’s entertainment is from Kent or Sussex, most of it is actually from Brighton.” “That’s the difference between us and other boutique festivals, we wanted to be genuinely creative and still serve the people of the area.” Back in the city, the opening of a fully dedicated Playgroup venue in central Brighton means that the lads can further consolidate their position as the City’s number one providers of awe-inspiring interactive shenanigans. With the acquisition of Hector’s House provides Cassidy and Lakka with a permanent canvas for their fevered imaginations. Lakka has got some big plans for the building: “We’re hoping to be turning it into a more community run space. We want it to be a hub for the whole spectrum of the arts, not just another music venue.” “If you stand up and open your doors to people and say here’s what we’re trying to do, do you get what you came for? Do you want to get involved? Then you can really start to blur that divide between party host and party crowd.”

THE PLAYGROUP FOUNDATION The next step in Playgroup’s cheery march to benevolent world domination is to establish a cooperative for local performers and artists that will pool and develop local talent. “We want to create something called the Playgroup Foundation,” Lakka explains. “Profits from the bar go into a fund, from this we can look at financing people who need help with what they are doing.” “There’s excellence here, and if you give people that showcase and help fund it then you’ll stimulate it even more.” One thing is obvious about Playgroup: Their creativity and the passion that they put into all of their projects enable them to throw some of the best parties that Brighton has ever seen. Philip Lakka is unwavering about Playgroup’s place in the world: “Playgroup is like a colouring book, we provide some black and white outlines and the people come and provide the colour.” Playgroup Festival 5th - 7th August - Eridge Park www.playgroupfestival.com

AUDIO ROCKIT “HELP MUSICIANS BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND THE INDUSTRY” In a country like this one with a thriving music scene it can sometimes seem like everywhere you look there’s a band or an artist looking to be signed. With so many people wanting to be noticed it can be really difficult to get anywhere at all when it seems like everyone else is talking at the same time. This disillusions artists and many disappear without a trace every single day. With such an extinction of talent going on its hard not to think that bands actually getting their music heard is an impossibility. It isn’t, and help is at hand. Audio Rokit, which was launched in December 2010, aims to help musicians bridge the gap between themselves and the industry, as well as save them time by making it

easier for musicians to submit their material to music companies. The pitching site features listings from 100s of organisations including major record labels, management, and music festivals such as Safe Management (who managed the Spice Girls), Casket Records, BMG Chrysalis, and Hi Tone Records. Darren Monson and Dave Spinolli, who run Audio Rokit, spend eight hours a day liaising with music companies and industry reps. Their job is to do all the leg work for their members so that they can concentrate on making music while being assured that they are in safe and capable hands. They work hard developing relationships so that they can ensure their members receive only the most high quality leads. Audio Rokit list hot new music opportunities on their website, and also make the process of submitting music an easy one; members can submit music directly to any music company listed with just a single click. They also help to make

life easier for the music companies themselves by offering several functions like Chorus Blast, which allows a user to hear a brief snippet of a song so they can quickly make a decision on it, and status folders that allow them to easily manage applicants as they view them. Several artists have already benefited from this superb service; “DoG headed SpiRITs” found their new manager, “Strikos” found a manager that is now pushing his music, and Harold Bedwei was recently signed. THE HEAD AND THE HEART @ PRINCE ALBERT, JULY 14TH This group of sixties obsessive’s from across the pond come to the UK to promote their self-titled debut album and promise a real treat to those of us who like folk-infused pop music but I’m thinking more Crosby, Stills & Nash than the awful Mumford & Sons. These guys, from Seattle, are really something quite different – a multi-harmony lead crew who aren’t afraid to get a bit jaunty but never too exuberant. A special treat for us from those lovely people at LOUT promotions who always seem to know when something special is going to happen and in this case I hope their right.

SEA OF BEES @ THE HOPE, JULY 20TH Lovely avant-folk noir from this Californian based singer-songwriter Julie Ann Baenziger, Jules to her mates, in her guise as Sea of Bees. Backed up with some wonderfully minimal instrumentation this is really sweet music. At times sound-

ing like the glorious band Low this is really great stuff and the second record, released last year, is rapidly becoming one of my albums of 2010… unfortunately I only heard it recently but don’t worry this will be their first trip to these shores so get along and then in years to come you can brag to all your friends about how you saw them play a tiny show on their first tour. Truly wonderful stuff.

VIVIAN GIRLS @ COALITION, JULY 16TH There was so much promise to the chill-wave scene when it first slinked stoned from the minds of mostly girls a few years ago – Best Coast delivered one of the best albums of last year but their subsequent live shows have been a major disappointment – but this bunch of New York girls could well be the torch bearers for where the scene is moving. On this tour they will be promoting their second album ‘Share The Joy’ which they sure do, delivering one of the most joyous records I’ve heard in a while. If you like real indie pop then get along to this show for what promises to be

GREENWICH SUMMER SESSIONS @ OLD ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE, GREENWICH, LONDON JULY 26TH-30TH Now, I must confess I’m a little puzzled as to why we are previewing a series of gigs in London apart from the fact that they are being promoted by our own lovely people at Melting Vinyl but for the older more mature of our readership it may well be worth investigating. Not much new can be said about any of the artists playing that hasn’t already been said but the one that really comes screaming off the page for me is the prospect of not just The Pogues, with Shane back on vocal duties providing that little bit of chaos, but the Buzzcocks as main support. This show takes place on the last night (the 30th) and promises to make a lot of old punks very happy. The other shows are the lovely Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy playing solo with support from Jose Gonzalez (July 26th), the marmite like Mark Ronson (July 27th), the legends that should never have been Status bleeding Quo (July 28th) and south London’s own Squeeze, without Jools Holland, on the 29th.

BRIGHTON HAS CONSISTENTLY LED THE WAY IN DEVELOPING NEW APPROACHES TO THE PERFORMING ARTS. SO RETURNING FOR A SECOND YEAR TO ONCE AGAIN BLUR THE LINES BETWEEN SPECTACLE, PARTICIPATION, MUSICIANSHIP AND ARTISTRY IN THE CITY IS SOUNDWAVES FESTIVAL.

Labelling itself as an inter-disciplinary and explorative festival, Soundwaves takes over a number of interesting venues across Brighton & Hove venues on July 14 - 17th with four days of new commissions, collaborations, performances and experiences. Split into 4 distinct themes: Comment, Move, Sing and Listen, the festival brings a wealth of free and participatory events to a wide range of exciting and unusual venues. Some of the highlights include: sound walks held atop city centre car parks and through museums which will shift your perception of the world around you, silent performances by Me and Machine, Lost Parade and Scott Smith, unique collaborations between musicians and dancers, and plenty of free workshops for those who want to get involved. David Thomas, the legendary front man of Pere Ubu, will be taking over the Town hall’s atrium alongside electronic wunderkinds Sound Intermedia and forward thinking chamber orchestra CHROMA, there’ll be the gloriously dark theatrics of Gazelle Twin, whilst sonic experimentalist Mikhail Karikis take over Brighton’s council chamber and artists Amy Cunningham and Lost Parade create unforgettable, immersive experiences in the Town hall’s old police cells. This is a festival that provides a platform for its participating artists to work without constraints. BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK By Deborah Farefield

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK MAY BE OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR BUT WHAT A STYLISH CELEBRATION OF TALENT AND BEAUTY IT WAS. Kick starting the week’s line up of vintage-chic inspired events, the VIP Launch Party at the Hilton Hotel saw budding fashionistas, models, designers and journalists mingling within a crowd of contacts and the ‘thank god this might go to plan’ BFW team. With free wine and vodka red bulls flowing merrily, models posed elegantly in ostentatious gowns either side of DJ Phats who set the upbeat tone for this year’s occasion. Flaunting fashion on the coast, Brighton’s host of locations were busy throughout the week with admirers and designers visiting from across the UK. Chief Events Producer, Tori Cherry-Downes, said “It’s about getting Brighton on the map. Fashion events are always popping up especially in London, but Brighton is such a hive of activity so it’s about getting it out there on show.”

BRIGHTON FROCKS This year, the Brighton Frocks Show was the one to start it all with an outlandish catwalk set within the incredible neo-gothic interior of St Martin’s Church, Lewes Road. Opening with a live ballet performance, designers sent their masterpieces down the runway to music and choreography that matched the quirkiness of the show and this city. Designers included Bugsy Pants, Katie Newsham and Charlotte Appleby whose futuristic light display embedded within her collection was simply breathtaking. Influences amongst the designer’s varied from Victorian frills to the multicoloured ‘computer game’ style of I.AM.RALPH, whilst the sexy beach

wear provided some summer gymspiration for females amongst the audience. Briar-Rose Kelleher also drew some gasps from the crowd as the models turned at the end of the catwalk to reveal their bottoms through corseted lacing. Oh, how cheeky!

THE COUTURE SHOW The following night, The Couture Show continued with elegance and style and standing ovations a plenty for the designers whose expertise and creativity wowed spectators. Tim Rhys-Evans opened the show with a collection of high set necklines and legs as far as the eye could see, before Millie Betito and Alexei Izmaylov took to the runway with heavy pleated dresses and an evolution of sophisticated scarf wear. Mid-week, a gig in aid of charity War Child saw some heavy back bass beats and catchy vocals from The Agitator, Dark Horses and La Shark, whose topless front man climbed the arches inside the Concorde 2 to hang upside down mid-performance. In the front bar, rock & roll brought many to the floor with twists and turns from the 50s, whilst a selection of models walked catwalk style through the venue, stopping for pictures with delighted fans amongst the audience.

THE READY TO WEAR SHOW Saturday’s finale featured The Ready to Wear Show at the Corn Exchange, with catwalks throughout the day, make-up demonstrations from Jemma Kidd staff and an indoor market bustling with blouses, dresses, accessories and rails of clothes marked ‘trailer trash vintage’. The Oysters and Champagne on sale were also a fitting way to end the sophisticated, ‘welcome to the world of fashion’ nature of the week in Brighton. If there’s one creative vision we wouldn’t mind borrowing, it is the Director of Brighton Fashion Week, Liz Bishops. With this year’s success she proves that bringing her team together with the talent of so many designers, she can make it happen. “It was a truly fantastic week with brilliant designers and outstanding collections” she said.

MOSHI MOSHI HELD THEIR INCREASINGLY POPULAR BRIGHTON JAPANESE FESTIVAL OVER JUNE 18 -26.

Bigger and better than ever, the festival was a week-long celebration of Japanese film, art, performance and culture.

MOSHI MATSURI The centre piece of the festival was Moshi Matsuri, a street festival which took over Bartholomew Square for the two weekends. This year saw the addition of a large covered area for the stalls in the square, which not only protected the crowds from the elements, but also recreated the fragrant and colourful atmosphere of a vibrant Japanese downtown market.

HIGHLIGHTS There were the now familiar spectacles, including: Taiko drumming, origami workshops, martial arts displays and scores of people in Japanese style outfits. The recent earthquake, and subsequent tsunami, in Japan was marked by the festival with a fundraising evening for the victims of the disaster.

Local music guru’s Melting Vinyl provided some Far Eastern audio delights with a showcase featuring some of Japan’s most exciting new musical talent. Elsewhere in the city, The Dome, Jubilee Library, Pavilion Theatre, Duke of York’s, Hotel Du Vin, and Moshi Moshi, all held special events in this colourful and effervescent celebration of all things from the Land of the Rising Sun. Local shops and businesses also got into the mood with promotions on Japanese products. Marwood Café got into the spirit of the things by opening as a late-night retro Japanese gaming boutique. The list of attractions was almost endless: Cosplay competition, bizarre Japanese game-shows, Manga art, slightly eerie Lolita fashions and loads of screenings of cult classic movies – including the original version of Godzilla.

The Secret Garden Party is always a delightfully mad party experience, where everyone participates in outlandish activities and creative mayhem. The Festival is 100% independent and without the pressures of corporate sponsorship, set either side of a beautiful lake on the gorgeous private estate in Mill Hill Field Huntingdon, in Cambridgeshire. The theme this year is ‘Origins And Frontiers’ “Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?” - Paul Gaugin. So, as you can imagine, plenty of costumes, performances, art tents, theatre workshops, boat rides, big wheel rides, treasure hunts, bands in trees, swimming, a train service and of course, lots of live music! On the bill this year, Leftfield, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Blondie, Mystery Jets, Foy Vance, I Am Kloot, Miraculous Mule and Joana And The Wolf to name but some. This is a festival for all to enjoy, you can bring the kids as there’s a dedicated kids’ area, plus a Boutique camping site for those that wanna do it in style! Oh and not forgetting the secret installation in the middle of the lake. Good times. Tickets are priced £155 for four days of camping with free tickets available for the under 12’s. Campervan pass priced at £50.

Another creative and visual festival, but on a massive scale, and one last chance to get away before the monotony of Autumn; look no further than the fantastic Bestival 2011. Having only been around since 2004, Bestival is still relatively new, and held at The Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight. Despite its young age, the greatness of Bestival is undeniable; it was voted as the best UK festival last year and boasts one of this year’s top line-ups. Headliners The Cure, Pendulum, and Primal Scream will be joined by acts like Tom Vek, Graham Coxon, The Maccabees, Katy B, Public Enemy, and our very own Fat Boy Slim. If the line-up alone isn’t enough to sway you then the Afterburner, which has to be seen to believed, should be. Expected to make a triumphant return this year the 360-degree multi-stage arena is centred around a 10 metre high fire, water, and smoke spouting tower that comes alive after dark. A DJ booth at the very heart of the construction pounds a beat to synchronize the mechanical mayhem. Tickets bought directly from the organisers are now all sold out, but don’t despair; you can still buy them from Ferry companies Red Funnel, and Wight Link. Tickets are £180.50 for adults (16+), £93 for teens, and £170.50 for full-time students. Ferry travel is, obviously, essential so book before you leave. Don’t miss out on this fantastic festival. LOCAL STREET-DANCE ENTHUSIASTS WILL BE FLOCKING TO THE BRIGHTON DOME ON SAT 16TH JULY FOR STRAIGHT UP 2011, THE ANNUAL SHOWCASE FOR LOCAL DANCE TALENT.

The crew behind this event are Streetfunk, who aim to promote their energetic approach to dancing as the key to a healthy body and positive attitude. Holding classes across the city, Streetfunk is run by Annelies Silverwood and JP Omari and provides classes for people of any age or ability. Now Streetfunk are putting on this extra special event for their students to show of the skills they’ve learnt. This year, a matinée performance has been added to try and satisfy the demand for this massively popular show. “The purpose of the showcase is for the kids to show everyone what they have learnt this year”, JP tells us. “It’s also a chance for them to perform for their families and the wider public.” “They get a chance to see the progress of the other kids around town. They also get to see professional acts, this shows them what they can aspire to and achieve.”

This year’s exceptional acts include Nottingham’s Freedom Movement and street-dance specialists Urban Strides. In case there wasn’t enough raw talent filling the Dome stage already, Chris & Wes, stars of TV’s Got To Dance, will be breaking out their winning skills to further fire up the crowd. “It’s going to be an amazing event for kids, families and people of all ages,” JP says. “We want people to come down and see what Streetfunk is all about.” The Streetfunk mantra proclaims: “We are committed to creating a positive lifestyle where dance is taught in a fun environment where discipline, hard work and respect are paramount. We stand against lethargy and cultivate passion and funk in every person.” This is an attitude that is unmistakably demonstrated by the enthusiasm and joy all the members put into their performances. www.streetfunk.co.uk

THERE’S SOMETHING MORE THAN A LITTLE SURREAL ABOUT WATCHING ADAM ANT IN CONCERT. BACK IN THE LATE 70S AND EARLY 80S, HE WAS ONE OF BRITAIN’S BIGGEST STARS, THEN IT ALL FELL APART AND DESPITE NUMEROUS COMEBACK ATTEMPTS, HE ONLY HIT THE HEADLINES BECAUSE OF HIS INCREASINGLY BIZARRE BEHAVIOUR. AND THEN IT ALL WENT QUIET. But now Prince Charming is once again in the limelight. He clearly holds an affection for Brighton, because he was back at the Concorde 2 just a month after playing the same venue in May. The fact the second gig also sold out shows he still has a big fanbase. And judging by the age of those who came to see him, most were there to relive their teenage years when Adam Ant was wowing them on Top of the Pops. Fast forward some 30 odd years and everyone’s looking a lot older, including of course Adam himself. Now 56, he took to the stage wearing his trademark hussars jacket teamed with a huge Napoleonesque bicorne. To be honest, he looked somewhat ridiculous, particularly as these days he’s sporting large

black-framed glasses and a pencil-thin moustache. The first time I saw this new get up he reminded me of someone, but I just I couldn’t put my finger on who it was. So much for his appearance, what about the show? Well, there was no Marco Pirroni on guitar, apparently Adam and his former cohort have long-since fallen out and never reconciled. There were however, still two drummers who helped recreate the distinctive tribal sound that was such a big part of hits like ‘Antmusic’ and ‘Stand and Deliver’. As ever, the sound at the Concorde 2, was excellent and there were times when you could have been transported back to when the dandy highwayman was in his prime. He still throws the old moves: one leg on the monitor being just one of his preferred poses. But there were some new surprises, a curious version of YMCA renamed ANTS and a rousing cover of T Rex’s ‘Get It On’ with Adam on guitar. The audience lapped up the hits, which came thick and fast. And to be honest, three decades on, songs like ‘Goody Two Shoes’ and ‘Prince Charming’ still stand up. Whether the man who sings them is as good as he was back then is another matter. For large parts of the show, I couldn’t help but think I was watching a middle-aged man having a go at impersonating a young Adam Ant. And perhaps that was exactly what Adam himself was trying to do, after all, he was even wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with his own face from 30 years ago. Now some might say that’s more than a little sad, others - especially those who came to see him in Brighton - will probably forgive him and were just grateful for the opportunity of reliving their youth. And if any one of them were fans of ‘Green Wing’ then I’m sure a few would have spotted the uncanny resemblance between that show’s extremely odd consultant radiologist Dr Alan Statham and Adam Ant himself. Not only do they look similar and share the same crazed expressions, but both of them verge between the slightly unusual and the completely bizarre!

Lewis Crathern —The Man that Touched the Sky Local Kitesurfing legend Lewis Crathern soared over two of the South Coast’s most loved landmarks and into news reports all over the world. Now a film has been released showing the human story behind the extraordinary fearless Worthing and Brighton pier leaps. Directed by Johnny Brooks, The Man that Touched the Sky also shows how Lewis is now using kitesurfing as a tool to promote wind energy. “England is the windiest country in Europe and the UK South Coast, especially our area, has the highest stats for wind anywhere,” says Crathern. “It’s crazy that we aren’t harnessing all this free energy.” But what possess anyone to try and jump over 50ft of pier? “These are my local landmarks; it’s inevitable as humans that you consider doing these things,” Crathern calmly explains. “I looked at things long term. Someone was going to do this within 100 years. I’m good enough, so I wanted to do it.” “It’s a bit of a rebellion, if you like, from the competition scene. I really feel that the competition scene doesn’t

promote the sport as well as they could.” Despite being viewed by many as foolhardy, these pier leaps were favourably received by most people. “I got a really positive feedback from it,” Crathern recalls. “What surprised me most was the older generation were behind me saying: ‘Yeah go on! You only get one chance in life’, whereas the middle-aged people have been a little bit more anal about it.” He originally started his sporting life as a diver, but found his skills could be easily applied to kitesurfing. “I picked up a windsurfer by chance and tried that for a bit,” says Crathern. “I’ve always been a very sports type guy, then I saw kite-surfing take off. I found I was pretty good at it after a few years. That’s how I started this journey.” By 19 Crathern was British champion, a title he claimed on another three occasions, but in 2009 he turned his back on competing so he could concentrate on promoting the growing sport.

“It’s just so accessible now. Every country you can think of is getting into kite surfing. Iran, Israel, Egypt, it’s crazy how these places are all taking off.” Crathern still lives in Worthing and now works as a kitesurfing coach, and presents events all over the world. He also tours schools to spreading the kite surfing message and promote a wind powered lifestyle. “I can’t stop talking about how good England is for kite surfing,” Crathern says. “It’s currently the most rapidly growing water sport in the world. Get-

ting lessons is the number one thing, if you’re getting into it. A kite is pretty powerful. It’s amazing what putting a kite in someone’s hand can do.” Infamous daredevil, kite surfing icon and local hero… So what could be next for Lewis Crathern? “I’ve got some big things planned,” he laughs. “But I do have to keep them to myself. I’VE BEEN SCAMMED. WELL, TECHNICALLY NOT SO MUCH ME BUT ALL THE CONTACTS IN MY EMAIL ADDRESS BOOK. They were all told I had been mugged at gun point in Valencia and could friends ‘please urgently transfer money to help ‘me’ out. Of course most people realised that it wasn’t genuine; largely, as many were rather too quick to relay, on the basis that the email was far too polite to have ever been from me. I joke about it now but actually it wasn’t very funny. As far as I know, no one actually got as far as actually sending money to these scum fraudsters, but, of course, I can’t be entirely sure. Myself I spent the entire day having the same repeated conversations with all and sundry, whilst the phone constantly bleeped with yet more people trying to get through by phone and text. The only heartwarming part of the whole sorry exercise was how many people displayed genuine concern, much of it coming from the most unexpected quarters - you kinda learn who your true friends are in bad circumstances! Last month’s column mentioned my hanging around, invited or otherwise, at the Latest Music Bar. Unlike Liz Jones Diary in the Mail on Sunday (she’s not really going out with Robert Plant, surely?) these revelations haven’t yet rebounded on me. Although owner Angi did march up to me and say ‘I’ve read your BN1 column…’. I braced myself as she drew breath before continuing ‘and I thought it very funny’. All said with a very straight face, mind you, and I’m still not sure this remark was not yet simply another example of Angi’s endless tolerance or something more sincere but, all in all, I’ll settle for it, just now. Of course, I’ve only just scratched the service of the shenanigans and characters involved with that legendary venue, but I’m keeping my head down for now but watch this space in future perhaps. On the gigs front this month do look out for London duo ‘Bruise’ who play the aforementioned Latest on Thursday 21st July. Equally adept as an acoustic duo, this husband and wife team are performing in White Stripes electric mode this time out (albeit in reverse of the Stripes, wife out front, husband on drums). Bruise have quite a Brighton following, and are, quite rightly, much championed by Radio Reverb, amongst others. Catch this gig if you can. I can’t be there myself sadly as I’ll be off to Chagstock (‘Shagstock’) Festival where ‘er indoors has been booked to perform. It’ll be the third Devon date this summer and with more in the book I’m getting rather too familiar with that long, if picturesque, drive to the Shire. Still at least it gets me out of the house. VEGAN FARE

VEGAN FARE HARICOT, LEMON & TARRAGON CASSOULET This French cassoulet recipe is taken from my forthcoming cookbook, “The Home Bistro” and is a perfect summery take on what is usually a winter dish. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 2 hrs 20 minutes Ingredients 450g Haricot Beans (drained & cooked weight) 550g Chick Peas(drained & cooked weight) 200g Pearl Barley 1 bunch Celery (chopped into chunks) 2 Carrots (peeled & chopped into chunks) 3 Potatoes (peeled & roughly diced) 2 Onions (peeled & chopped) 1 Leek (washed & roughly sliced) 3 cloves Garlic (peeled & sliced) 1 handful Fresh parsley (roughly chopped) 1 small handful fresh tarragon (roughly chopped plus a little extra unchopped for garnish) 1 big handful fresh oregano 1 Bayleaf ½ lemon zest 1 tbsp Capers ½ pint White wine 2 tsp Cider vinegar 1 ½ pints Water 1 ½ tbsp Vegetable bouillon powder 2 tsp mixed peppercorns Lemon juice to finish Oil for frying Method Pre-heat the oven to 180oC In a big pot, gently sauté off the onions until soft & translucent. Add the celery, carrots, potatoes & leek and sauté for a further 3 minutes. Add the parsley and garlic & cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Add the beans & pearl barley & stir, then add the wine and cook until it evaporates. Add all the remaining ingredients & stir well. Place into the oven and cook for 2 hours. Remove and allow to cool a little before serving. HOMITY PIE The weather has been so changeable recently and after becoming so fed up with the rain, wind and cloud, I decided to treat myself to some good old fashioned comfort food. I learnt to make this fabulous dish at Trogs Restaurant but have developed my own non-cheese & cream version. This is so quick and easy to make but so delicious, especially on a drizzly day. Minimum effort, maximum reward. Perfect! Ingredients 7 Medium Potatoes (peeled & quartered) 200g Frozen peas (cooked) 1 Bayleaf 2 Cloves garlic (Peeled & quartered) 3-4 tbsp Soya Cream 2-3tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3-4 pinches Engevita or other yeast flakes (Big pinches!) 3-4 Spring onions (Chopped) To taste Salt & pepper Method Place the potatoes into a saucepan. Add the bayleaf, garlic and a few sprinkles of salt. Boil for approximately 20 minutes or until cooked. Drain the potatoes and either mash them or put them through a potato ricer into a bowl. Turn on the grill to high. Add the soya cream, peas, olive oil, yeast flakes and spring onions. Mix well until creamy and smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste and more cream or oil if too dry. Spoon into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle on a little more yeast flakes on top and drizzle with a little more olive oil. Place under a hot grill until golden brown and the top starts to bubble. Serve immediately.

MEAN POPPA LEAN FEATURE By James Rowland

Being unfashionably and somewhat naively early to an interview doesn’t exactly spell out cutting edge rock journalist, especially when interviewing a funk-rock outfit as erratic as Mean Poppa Lean.

TB: “No, no, no, nothing that bad, I had a run-in with the Dutch police. I was not even 30 seconds driving off a ferry and I got pulled over, and well, there was no actual charge for being three times over the legal UK limit so some cash sorted all that out. So bribery and drink driving aside? [I move the recorder out of the path of the wind and panic ensues for Tom] TB: “I DIDN’T REALISE THIS WAS RECORDING! I tell you honestly I’ve never been in any trouble before or since it was just at that moment I was hungover drunk and got shafted by the police...” Moving swiftly on then, when you guys are out on the road, as you haven’t struck gold just yet, what is

The next month sees them return from a European tour, release their live EP ‘Live on Twelve Legs’ and play one of their biggest gigs yet at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Tom Beck - trombonist for the brass section of the group, The Horny Brassholes – is the first to arrive. MPL are known for their on-stage antics, are there any off-stage moments we should know about? TB: “We’ve had some mishaps...” Such as? TB: “Well we’ve had two arrests on tour, one was me and the other was... well I couldn’t possibly say”. Any convictions?

the weirdest thing you’ve all shared out of necessity? TB: “Shared? Like toothbrushes?” Well hopefully not that dull? TB: “I’d love to tell you we share near death experiences, women and drunken tire changes but really the closest thing we’ve shared together is a lot of long cold nights in the van and far too many stinking stage clothes.” We are then interrupted by the belated arrival of lead singer Christian Jennings Barnes and the guitarist affectionately known as C-Dogg. CJB: “Sorry I’m late guys, I’ve had the worst day of my life, I’m so hungover it feels like someone really crap released their new album in my mouth, I don’t know whose it is but it tastes like s**t!

[And with all the interviewees in place, we now predictably got onto even less important things, like CJB’s flat smelling like man socks and C-Dogg’s inability to daytime drink, but we drift back to the music eventually.] “Where do you guys get your inspiration from? I ask because when you hear the earlier material it seems to sound like an ode to Hendrix guitar blended with funk rhythms and vocals. The latest material seems a little different though. TB: “Well there is Hendrix in there but also a quite a lot of Prince.” CJB: “Me and C-Dogg started the band when we came to Brighton and incorporated a lot of old-school rock like Hendrix, Cream and Zeppelin and anything funky... we wanted to take all these sounds and create a mega band, but I guess we just turned out a shit mess.” C-Dogg: “The reason we perform the way we do is because we were inspired by the showmanship of old-school funk, and everything in Brighton was basically indie at the time. It is less shit now though.” CJB: “We’ve just always believed in giving the fans something to look at.” C-Dogg: “Our sound is just a mesh I guess, I think we just put down those influences on paper so we can look cool.” [Rip-roaring laughter from the band and a debate ensues, after which they conclude they are mostly influenced by beer.] You all seem quite tight with each other, how well does the friendship group function? CJB: “The band has always been about friends, I guess that’s why Tom managed to slot in. [Laughs] C-Dogg: “We have our bad moments though if we’re drunk or tired. Mostly we just fight over... ALL TOGETHER: “Garlic and herb dip!” CJB: “Don’t ever mention dip or shit

could go down.” Ok guys, well for fear of losing you all to the fast-food dark-side I have one final question which I’m sure might have crossed the minds of the odd fan, why Mean Poppa Lean? CJB: “It came from talking s**t about a photo of my dad actually. I call him ‘pops’ and I saw this picture and said he had a mean lean on, then the inevitable banter ensued and it was what we landed on. We basically agreed that all names work as long as you can deliver musically.” Well, that seems like a good place to leave it, thanks for talking to us guys. ALL TOGETHER: “You’re welcome!” These guys evidently have a close bond with each other, in creepily synchronised speech as well as musical timing. TATTOO MONTHLY

This month Becka Marie ‘our resident tattoo enthusiast’ focuses her attention on one person and their tattoos. Meet Luke Hallows, 24 from Brighton. Luke is the drummer for South Coast hardcore quartet Calrisian. His first tattoo was a black star on his elbow, aged 19. Since then, he’s had a rapid filling of traditional Japanese irezumi, tattooed by Ade Stacey, of Nine Tattoos, Brighton. The first large scale work was two Japanese sleeves, the right featuring Takayashi Hime intertwined with tranatulas and cherry blossoms. The left features a Hannya (Kabuki mask), an Oni (demon) and a Koi carp. Following the completion of both sleeves came the chestpiece: a well known motif of Benten-sama, Japanese goddess of entertainment, holding a Japanese Biwa Lute. Luke’s backpiece is a motif of legendary Japanese warrior, Taira no Tomomori. The piece was completed in roughly 27 hours over six sessions.

TATTOO MONTHLY

The most recent additions to Luke’s work have been his hands and knuckles, and cherry blossom neck coverage. His palm and a face tattoos are by Adam Sage of IN2U Tattoo, Brighton. His knuckles were by Xam at Frith Street. Luke says: “Tattoos are something permanent. They always belong to you. My house could be repossessed, I could lose everything, but the tattoos would always be mine, and nothing can change that. They feel like an investment. I’m spending time and money on something that I’ll always have. The Japanese style is mainly because I love the artwork and the stories behind the motifs. That’s what I like about getting tattooed by Ade. He knows his shit. BUSINESS ACUMEN WHAT IS A “SUPERINJUNCTION”?

‘SUPERINJUNCTION’ IS THE BUZZWORD OF THE MOMENT. IT SEEMS THAT WITH EACH NEW WEEK, A HANDFUL OF STORIES FEATURING THE ‘S’ WORD HIT THE HEADLINES AND HOURS OF TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCASTS ARE FILLED WITH PEOPLE DEBATING THE SUBJECT. BUT WHAT IS THE LAW RELATING TO PRIVACY AND ON WHAT GROUNDS ARE ALL THESE INJUNCTIONS BEING GRANTED?

An injunction is an order of the court which prevents somebody from doing something. A particularly interesting incarnation of the injunction is the so-called ‘superinjunction’. This prevents the mere existence of the injunction from being acknowledged publicly. In the world of celebrity culture, reputation is key and if I were allowed to say that Mr X had obtained an injunction against newspaper Y, that may be enough to damage his reputation. As the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire. From Mr X’s point of view a superinjunction is much more useful than a standard injunction. The debate centres around whether the current use of injunctions and superinjunctions by ‘naughty’ celebrities, is justified at the expense of a free press.

ENGLISH LAW It may surprise you to read that under English law, there is no absolute right to privacy. Unlike in the USA there is no absolute right to keep personal information confidential. However, over the years case law has developed to a point where under certain circumstances a person has the right to keep certain information private.

CONFIDENCE The starting point for privacy law in the UK is the tort of confidence which states that confidential information must be kept private, even in the absence of a confidentiality agreement. The problem with confidentiality law in a privacy context is that it requires the existence of a particular kind of relationship between the two parties where an obligation of confidence exists. The information must also have the necessary quality of confidence (essentially not public knowledge and of some intrinsic value). Finally, there must be an unauthorised use of the information to the detriment of the person communicating it. Clearly the relationship of newspaper and celebrity will often fail this test.

HUMAN RIGHTS What has happened over the years is that the Human Rights Act (HRA) has been swallowed by the law of confidence and a hybrid has been created which is known as the tort of misuse of private information. HRA states that everybody has the right to respect for their private

and family life. At the same time, the Act also states that everyone has the right to freedom of expression. Whilst both rights are undoubtedly good ideas, they don’t sit particularly comfortably beside each other. If I want to publish a story about a celebrity who is having an extramarital affair, then these two rights collide head on. My right to freedom of expression, versus the subject’s right to respect for his or her private life. It is therefore a balancing act to decide, on the facts, which right should win out.

WHAT IS PRIVATE INFORMATION? In order to determine what information is private, the question to ask is whether the person making the complaint has a reasonable expectation of privacy. This started as a relatively high hurdle. In 2002, the Court of Appeal rejected an anonymity claim by footballer, Garry Flitcroft on the grounds that he was a celebrity who had “courted” the attention of the public and was therefore open to a greater level of such scrutiny than the general public or even other “celebrities”.

SHIFTING THE BALANCE Over the years, the balance seems to have shifted in favour of the celebrity. The question remains whether in all the circumstances the interest of the owner of the private information should give way to the publisher’s right of freedom of expression. The recent flurry of injunctions would seem to suggest that the balance currently lies in favour of the celebrity.

THE DEBATE Whichever side of the fence that you stand on, it seems likely that we can expect to see many more column inches dedicated to the subject in the coming months. We can also probably expect Parliament to wade into the argument and once and for all try and bring some clarity to the law.
