JULY 2014 What have I learned this month? Firstly, everyone looks a lot better with a slight tan. Perhaps not the bright orange sheen favoured by the over-preened types populating the centre on the weekend, but a healthy glow is most agreeable. It also seems the more England flags a vehicle sports, the less consideration its owner shows to fellow road users. Our national team being knocked out of the World Cup now leaves no way to easily discriminate bad drivers, unless they break that 20mph speed limit. At least it’s not long until the Rugby World Cup, and then traversing the City streets will be safer once more.

JULY 2014 Welcome to July... Like Luis Suárez in search of a nibble, we bring you a beautiful taste of Brighton! We talk to two emerging local musicians Fable and Paul Thomas Saunders, and look at film festival Beyond the Wave. Once more we’ve got our ever-reliable Food reviews. We check out the Level’s Velo Cafe, Hove’s new bar and rotisserie Crafty Chooks, and academically minded The Globe. If you’re in the mood for eating without leaving the house, then we have a tasty gluten free recipe to try. If you want to go out, then we’ve got a host of activities to check out.

We look at the Paddle Round The Pier‘s music line-up, and stay out on the waves with a look at Stand Up Paddle boarding. Inland we get excited about Pride, as it’s got a line-up starting this month we’d walk a mile in killer heels for… and just might! Still on the prowl, our festival guide returns, we make life more interesting with some gadgets and look at some of the best outdoor activities in the area. Obviously we’ve still got previews of the best film, comedy, theatre and music around, but that goes without saying.

There are not only Brighton flyers here either - attracting kite flyers from across the globe this family friendly festival will have some of the world’s maestros in sport kite flyers exhibiting their talents and skills in the arena exhibitions. Parking will be at the rear of the park with a donation requested help cover costs of the festival. www.brightonkiteflyers.co.uk/Festival/index.htm

The aquatic parade, now in its second year, is raising awareness of marine conservation and funds for the Marine Conservation Society. Set up by local resident 26-year-old Hannah Chilton it was inspired by New York’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade. The event is a family friendly day for all ages to take part in and other groups and charities are encouraged to come along and promote their own marine related campaigns by having a presence at the march. If you fancy taking a watery walk the meeting point for the parade is on Hove Lawns at 2pm (next to the Peace Statue). The parade starts at 3pm and will end at Above Audio on Marine Parade for the after-party with music and live entertainment. And, to help motivate the most elaborate costumes there is the much coveted crowning of our Queen Mermaid 2014 and King Prawn 2014. www.marchofthemermaids.com

DR BRIGTHON

CHARITY CHUCKLE

Brighton Seafront 9 July - 31 Aug 2014, Admission free

Komedia Tue 8 July

A free exhibition on Brighton’s seafront demonstrates the role the City played in the Great War, not only by providing thousands of young men to fight, but also as ‘Doctor Brighton’ a hospital city where wounded soldiers were sent to recover.

A special birthday wish has been granted for Charity Chuckle’s promoters this month, as Stewart Lee comes to play at Komedia on Tue 8 July.

Dr Brighton’s War: Hospitals and Healing in Brighton during WW1 uses images, posters and postcards from Brighton Museum’s archives to show how the area was transformed during the Great War. As a seaside resort the City was ideally suited to entertaining these young men and distracting them from the horrors of war. More importantly, Brighton played its part in retraining the seriously injured and preparing them for their integration back into society after life-changing injury.

Performing material from his Work In Progress tour, Stewart Lee will be joined by the lovely (and very big in Hove) Zoe Lyons. Completing the line-up is Jim Holland, with a preview of his debut Edinburgh show, all compered by Julie Jepson It’s all in the name of raising money for Fare Share, a Brighton food redistribution charity. Which is why Charity Chuckle is encouraging everyone to bring along a tin of food, dried goods or a packet of biscuits (or Jaffa Cakes) to be shared with those in need. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

STRIKE A BRIGHTON POSE Jubilee Library Mon 21 July – Sun 3 Aug

Strike A Brighton Pose, a snapshot of LGBTQ clubbing in Brighton & Hove comes to Jubilee Library, on Mon 21 July – Sun 3 Aug. The exhibition uses flyers, artwork, photography and the memories of clubbers, promoters, venue owners and DJs, to reflect the thirty plus years its creators, Kate Wildblood and Queen Josephine, have spent in the LGBTQ discos of Brighton. By repositioning the humble flyer as artwork and the clubber as social historian, Strike A Brighton Pose transforms the disco into a vital beat slice of queer history. Including original collages by Kate Wildblood, and framed original flyer artwork from some of Brighton & Hove’s finest LGBTQ club nights, Strike A Brighton Pose is part of the 2014 Brighton Pride Arts and Film Festival and is a fundraising event for Brighton Pride and The Rainbow Fund, a grant-giving fund for local LGBTQ and HIV organisations. strikeabrightonpose.com

BN1 CHATS WITH...

© Francesca Moore www.franmooremusic.com

Paul Thomas Saunders I ask: “So it is catharsis then?” Instantly I feel a little stupid, because my companion, singer-songwriter Paul Thomas Saunders has been explaining exactly that for about five minutes.

his album - Beautiful Desolation. Signed by Atlantic, a label unafraid to allow artists to develop at their own pace, Saunders re-recorded some of the album, culminating in its general release in April.

Since hearing his debut album we’d wanted to speak to him, but after witnessing his superb spot at The Great Escape in May, it became near imperative. So finally we dragged him out to Hove Museum for a photo-shoot, then to a nearby hostelry for a quick chat. Despite being slightly bemused by an afternoon in our company, Saunders is polite, likeable and startlingly articulate when talking about his music. It becomes clear talking to journalists and having his photo taken is something he’s still getting used to.

Featuring a range of different sounds, each track on the release demonstrates an enormous amount of ambition. “It’s just a really exciting thing seeing something flourish in a studio. I like simple songs, but they turn into these ornate solid pieces of work.”

Delving deep into his parent’s record collection, he took the age old decisions to form a band with school friends. Realising music was perhaps the only thing he truly knew, he elected to study at Leeds College of Music “It’s just something I find easier to do than having a conversation, or having my photo taken,” Hove resident Saunder warily tells me. The drive to create musically, saw Saunders and school friend Max Prior spend five years producing what would become

Using a less than traditional approach to recording, the album’s more magical moments seemingly sprung from the pair learning to use a studio through experimentation. Soaring vocals and lush layers mingle in a selection of tracks that betray his 25 years, with a streak of intensity bubbling beneath his gracious veneer. A stint at Samaritans, whilst he was at university, had a profound effect on his lyrical output. It seems people calling in search of solace speak in quire passionate and poetic terms. “It’s a really brave thing to use such open language when talking to a stranger. That was really moving. Lots of my songs try to use that same language. “

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 11 ]

Beautiful Desolation, the album’s title, refers to those solitary moments when you feel low. These moments of utter desperation can be some of the most important moments of your life. This can be when you realise certain things about yourself, and when you find second wind.

ch horror “People wat e they love th films because . d being scare sensation of ons gative emoti So having ne rful terly wonde can be a bit ot But having n experience. orse.” w r fa uld be had them wo

He aspires to write about life’s freer moments, those you can’t describe with simple words. Sometimes you only truly understand some emotions when you’re in the middle of experiencing them. Yet Saunders still finds it hard to describe what he was trying to put across in the album. The most rewarding thing is the thought of someone listening to his work and feel the way he does. He might worry about being understood, but just producing music makes him feel worthwhile. He equates the peaks and troughs of waiting for his music to be quantised by the media, to his experience of once hitchhiking to Prague. “You feel so good when you get a lift, then when you’re stuck at a service station you feel like such an idiot for even attempting it…” Recording influences cover Vangelis, Joe Meek, Serge Gainsbourg and Spiritualized, a range of people that would only have it their way. So why has he an infatuation with artists that with a strict idea of what they want to sound like? “I like people with an ambitious approach!” Most of these acts are far from contemporary, but the swerving of new music seems due to its lack of impact, rather than an unwillingness to embrace new trends. “A lot of it is quite fleeting. I read everywhere about some newfangled guy that is incredible. But then it just sounds so familiar to everything else.” When I ask if he’s a romantic, he concedes he’s something of a daydreamer. “There is a boy-like wonder that awesome stuff can happen,” he adds. I get the suspicion he wouldn’t be suited for a job that calls upon his creativity. So, is its fair to say the music is a form of catharsis for him? “Sure. But it’s also hopeful. It’s not an introspective slog.”

The walking embodiment of creative energy, Sepultura founder member Max Cavalera’s artistic output defines genres. He reigns as the adoptive tribal chief of a generation of fans, stretching from the roughest slums of South America to the coldest confines of Russia.

Iron Maiden guitarist and former West Ham youth team player, Steve Harris, takes his solo/side project out on the road, with a 10 date European tour. Harris will be bringing his mastery of the blistering live performance to the city, along with a blaze of powerful classic rock tunes.

New album ‘Rain Or Shine’ comes after an epic ten-month run of shows, including a massive two-leg UK tour. A run of shows in Europe and North America with Eric Clapton resulted in Carrack being personally invited to join Clapton’s band.

Anywhere that people are disenfranchised, the songs of Soulfly serve as their anthems. Long time lead guitarist Marc Rizzo, bassist Tony Campos and Max’s 21 year-old Zyon all come together to ensure the band retain its gritty edge, while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in metal.

Sheffield boy-girl duo Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor formed in 2005, when they were both still teenagers. The release of their debut album, Yeah So in 2009, offered sweet harmonious hooks and rockabilly beats, all held together by breathtaking harmonizing. Slow Club are defined by their own distinct and powerful partnership - Charles with bruised vocal, rasping guitar and disarming lightness of touch; Rebecca with her dash of Northern Soul and sharp wit, playing stand up drums. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/stickymikesfrogbar

Fri 18 July The Hope

The 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist and BBC 6 Music-favourite takes his lo-fi electro weirdness round the nation, on a full UK tour. His debut album, Bowler Hat Soup, inspired by Mothers of Invention, Sufjan Stevens, The Residents, The Beach Boys, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, saw Leonard play 22 instruments for it, including a radiator.

Komedia Brighton based band High Tyde bring their infectious sound to Komedia. Offering uplifting vibes and great energy, this young and passionate Indie four-piece have been named as one of THE bands to watch by BBC Introducing and have recently sold out headline shows at The Haunt.

Gathering more and more attention from fans and critics alike, this is your best chance to catch the rising star before he heads back to university in the autumn.

Packed full of summery sounds and some killer euphoric choruses, this is vibrant indiepop at its best. They’re mere youngsters now, so god knows what these lads will be producing in five years’ time. A lively and happy time guaranteed.

Andrew W.K. - professional partyer, The Oxford Union guest lecturer, advice columnist and global rockstar, brings his message of positive power and his enormous self-confidence to Brighton.

“Brighton’s grrrlgang 6-piece, erudite yelps, big crashing beats, instruments collide, we all drunk” I haven’t a clue what any of that means. But I do know this is lo-fi guitar pop at its best. What they lack in production sheen and clever marketing, they more than make up for in enthusiasm and fun.

With a name like that, you’d think this lot are either an erotic dance troupe, or a nononsense hardcore rock act. Well, they’re a lot closer to the latter. Occasionally unintelligible lyrics, cryptic themes and a healthy dose of art-house values all meet head on to offer something really musically compelling.

Recently releasing a three track cassette (remember those?) on Tuff Enuff Records, the band mix the best parts of punk, indie and pop. The recordings may be a bit crap, but the songs show this is definitely a band to check out. Image credit - David McNamee

Hailing from Syracuse, Perfect Pussy not only offer sweeping honesty, but have a dark sense of humour too. Their debut LP, Say Yes to Love, came in a limited edition of 300, which offered a sample of lead singer Meredith Graves’ blood mixed into the vinyl.

The Hobo Bonobo Hobo Bonobo Speaks!

NE W I sat down in my £5 chair, the type that folds down into a handy carry bag. The bag’s long gone, so the chair stays erect and unfolded on my balcony. This was a day for writing. Not my usual freestyle Facebook ranting, but a more measured, reflective attempt at grown up prose. My balcony is surrounded by the pungent flowers planted by the deceased previous owner of my flat. A year after moving in, they seem like a quiet hallo from beyond the grave, a little nod of encouragement from the lonely lush who drank herself to death in this very spot. My normally housebound geriatric cat was busy being chased by butterflies. The air filled with the drone of dinky, but statistically-perilous light aircraft, as they landed at the fancifully named Shoreham International Airport nearby. Facing west, all was sunshine. Writing was going to be a piece of pish, better than housework and easier than real work. My handwriting is so bad, a combination of mild dyspraxia and chronic indolence, that even I can’t read it, so a tablet is a godsend. Being a klutz over 40, I still festoon the edges of it with illegible prompts and notes on Post-Its, so it looks like some sort of demented digital sunflower by the time I’m finished fucking around with it. So, tablet on knee and knock off Ray Bans on nose, I started to write. Pages of beautiful guff about cultural fault-lines and dynamic friction, created by competing interests rubbing up against each other, filled my screen, as I tried to paint a picture of Brighton, the place Chuck D described as “our cold Miami.” The true secret of Brighton’s allure I speculated, lay not in the two miles of dirty, arse-intruding pebbles that line the edge of the evercold, jobbie infested murky Channel waters. The endless posing opportunities the canny natives lovingly craft for undiscerning visitors, is what brings the millions here. Brighton is like a giant Mr Benn’s fancy dress shop. Wanna play at being the sophisticated euro bourgeois al-fresco dining slut? We’ve got it covered. If shooting hoops, while being watched by sophisticated euro bourgeois al-fresco dining sluts makes your bum hum, then come fill your boots. Gay for a day or queer all year, Brighton’s got more mince than Iceland. I waffled on in a similar vein for a while longer, before realising that I hadn’t yet got around to mentioning bicycles. Knowing that I’d either have to change the title, or write a stonking great tome, I decided to have a couple of ice colds instead. The following day, after a bike ride to Worthing for a spot of Spiderman, I felt ready to pick up my tablet and finish what I’d started. The problem is, I hadn’t saved it. My attempt at grown up writing had disappeared like a fart in a high wind. I’m no hippy, I like drugs and some trees, but I can’t help feeling that it just wasn’t meant to be. So this isn’t my big boy’s writing or even a tribute to it. This is the self-centered whinging, of an old git who can’t save properly.

Brighton Pride 2014 The World’s A Disco

Declaring: “The World’s A Disco” Brighton Pride returns on Sat 2 – Sun 3 Aug, with a bigger and bolder programme of events. The main weekend flamboyantly kicks off with the LGBT Community Parade, which will fill the streets with an estimated 160,000 participants and spectators, dazzling costumes and spectacular floats. The parade will highlight the theme Freedom To Live, it will include 78 placards representing countries where homosexuality is still a criminal offence. The parade culminates and the World’s brightest and best Pride celebrations continue, in Preston Park. As with every year a host of superstars will be wowing the crowds on The Main Stage. Chart-topping R’n’B champion Katy B, line-dancing sex panthers Blue and the phenomenal voice of X-Factor winner Sam Bailey are a few of the highlights for the afternoon. Also pumping it up is Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, electro popsters Neon Jungle and the true queen of disco… Ms Martha Wash. Across the park, The Gaydar Q Live Music Stage will host live rock, indie, folk and rap including Republica and Pride favourite Lucy Spraggan. In The Legends Cabaret Tent (the biggest at any UK Pride) they’ll be delivering an eclectic gay mix of drag, singers, sequins, powerhouse vocals, pizazz, show tunes, camp, freedom, solidarity, love and respect. The Literature Live Tent will see writers from across East Sussex perform their work, in an inclusive and interesting haven of inspiration and humour, with just a touch of politics.

Get those hands in the air with the supersized The Wild Fruit Dance Tent. A sensational DJ line-up including Seamus Haji, Paul Heron, Fat Tony, Maze & Masters, Kate Wildblood and Lil Alex, will be thrilling the 8000+ clubbers. Over at The Calabash Tent the music policy is as diverse as it is delightful, A mix of R’n’B, Hip Hop, Bhangra, Dancehall, Reggae, Drum ’n’ Bass, Garage and Disco will get served up by Melody Kane, The NYC Downlow’s Ninebob & Gideon and Gail’N’Nancy amongst others. Brighton Pride favourite The Men’s Zone returns beefier than ever before, with DJs including: Chris Brogan, Josh The Barber, Richard Jones and Done & Dusted. If you want to get hot with the girls, the legendary Women’s Dance Tent will deliver up the soundtrack to keep your Pride pert. DJs rocking it include Kabu, Rocket, Claire Fuller and Kelly Lloyd. As ever, in the heart of the Park, the Community Village and marketplace will be filled with organisations, charities and businesses. These include Brighton Marina, who will be wheeling out their “Hunks in Trunks” to once again to fulfil most of your fantasies. A big change for this year’s Pride is Kemp Town’s Village Street Party. Starting at 8pm after the Park festivities on Sat, and at 2pm on Sun, the event returns safer and better, and with a new fundraising purpose. For the first time ever, Marine Parade will be closed to traffic, creating a unique and vibrant gay village for the weekend. Entertainment zones, dedicated to Cabaret, Bears and Disco, will allow the Party to be a safe and

enjoyable event for the LGBT community and its supporters. Entry for the two-day event costs just £5 (£2 a day), with a guaranteed £1 charitable donation to the Rainbow Fund. There’s plenty to do during the countdown to Pride weekend. Brighton Pride Arts Festival 2014 runs Sun 19 July – Mon 4 August 2013. This unique two week programme includes: The Pink Fringe at The Marlborough Theatre, Pride Film Festival at The Duke of York’s, the Shoot Me I’m Gay photography exhibition at Sidewinder and two new art exhibitions at Brighton’s Jubilee Library - Freedom to Live and Strike A Brighton Pose. Doggy Pride comes to Hove Rugby Club on Sun 20 July, to enthral proud pooches and their friends. Featuring awards, stalls, a glamorous catwalk doggy fashion show, bars and refreshment, this is the perfect day out for all the City’s star pooches. Down at Preston Park, on Sun 27 July, the Pride Rainbow Run sees a community sports day with a 5K run as its centrepiece. Welcoming all ages and abilities to run, walk, mince or crawl their way around the course, it’ll be full of frolics and camp afro-tastic kitsch glamour. Brighton Pride is a unique fundraising event that combines the very best of Brighton & Hove’s diverse and wonderful communities for a proud day out like no other. Glory Glory Pride Concorde 2 on Sun 3 Aug, 2pm - 2am

Glory Glory have been putting on fantastic all day parties for Brighton Pride for four years. Starting at Brighton Rocks Pride Festival in 2011, they’ve built up to great success. Now for 2014 they have upped the ante, upped sticks, and relocated to the Concorde2 to put on great big cracking rave. Their event on Sun 3 August will feature three arenas of different music to cater for house music lovers of all flavours. The venue is creating a special outside area for vocal/ groovy house, the bar area will provide eclectic grooves with tougher house sounds in the main room. Headlining this year is the World Famous Superstar Darren Emerson. In 1990, Darren joined techno band Underworld. In 1996 they released the single “Born Slippy”, which became a hit after its inclusion on the soundtrack for ‘Trainspotting’. Parting ways with Underworld in 2000, Darren began concentrating more on his solo career as a DJ and his remix work and his label. Since then he’s continued DJing relentlessly around the world. Brighton’s very own Freemasons top the bill over in the special outside area. The Grammy nominated act with five UK top 20 hits under

their belt played an enormously successful set at last year’s party and has been rebooked due to popular demand from Glory Glory regulars. DJ Russell Small and Producer Jimmy Wiltshire are regular guests at Pride parties worldwide and have a huge following that are drawn to their huge vocal house anthems and huge basslines. Also joining the line-up is Justin Robertson, a producer and DJ who brings with him a rich history as one of the creators of the Electronic Music scene. His restless need to push forward and innovate makes him one of the most relevant DJs around. Justin’s latest incarnation as The Deadstock 33s has been garnishing lavish praise from established figures such as Andrew Weatherall and Erol Alkan. Justin also found time to produce the achingly beautiful ‘’Yes It Is’’ with Tim Burgess, record reggae in Jamaica with Ernest Ranglin and Nadine Sutherland, front the art rock combo Thee Earls, write songs for two Fatboy Slim albums and run his own Neverwork label. Other great acts on the bill include St. Etienne legend Pete Wiggs, Rhythm Master and top remixer Steve Mac and Seamus Haji from Big Love Records.

Putting something back into Brighton, this great annual party is raising money for HIV charities Sussex Beacon, Brighton Oasis and the Pride Rainbow Fund, as well as providing the great after, after party for Pride 2014! DJs on the bill… Darren Emerson Freemasons Justin Robertson Steve Mac (Rhythm Masters) Seamus Haji Pete Wiggs (St Etienne) Mat Playford (Space Ibiza) Ash Huntington (Da Strobe) Pete Haywood (Wild Fruit) Andy Mac (Skint) Mick Fuller (Juice FM) Nick Hook (Jeepers) Simon Atkinson (Positive Sounds) Guy Williams Glory Glory comes to Concorde 2 on Sun 3 Aug, at 2pm - 2am.

FESTIVAL GUIDE

Now the weather man has given us the goahead, it seems festival season is going to be ace. So if we can witness fabulous live music outdoors, without getting soaked to the skin, then where should we go? We take another look at some of the best festivals this country has to offer.

THE BIG GREEN CARDIGAN Fri 5 - Sun 7 Sept

LEEFEST

Fri 11 - Sun 13 July South London’s LeeFest boasts Frightened Rabbit, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and MØ at their cosy site near Bromley this summer. LeeFest is even accessible to Oyster Card holders, whilst being situated on a beautiful countryside farm. www.leefest.org.uk

Promising a friendly crowd, local real ales and ciders, home cooked food (at sensible prices) and enough clean toilets to go round, this unique event gathers artists from every point on the musical spectrum to wow its crowd. Amongst the musical treats on offer are jazz from Paul Gunn & Worsted, bluesy Brightonians Red Butler, alternative rock duo Rotait, Multi award winning country blues from Red Dirt Skinners, explosive roots and blues guitarist King Size Slim and groove-driven rock from Sean de Burca! www.biggreencardigan.co.uk

FireChat, A new mobile messaging app, is empowering nearby smartphone users to stay in touch when there’s no cellular service or Internet connection. Using a technology called Wireless Mesh Networking it has the potential to allow a myriad of devices to connect like links in a chain. Users without a signal will be able to hopscotch through a chain of nearby devices, also using the app, to message friends in their area. This means that catching up with friends at a festival or large event is no longer reliant upon phone signals. To generate interest in the app, FireChat also allows users to enter a chat room, via a Wi-Fi signal, with up to 80 random users. Amusingly, this odd little feature is producing some of the most interesting posts on any social media right now. www.opengarden.com/firechat

THE MAYDAYS: OH BOY! THE QUANTUM LEAP SHOW

GARETH RICHARDS EDINBURGH PREVIEW

Fri 4 – Sat 5 July

Sun 6 July

Komedia

Refusing to let the purgatory-based Sci-Fi show die, award-winning improvisers The Maydays start up the Quantum Leap accelerator one more time. A scientist inhabits the body of an unwilling fool each week, with the aim of fixing their problems. When his job is done, he prays the next transition will be the one that takes him home. In this homage to the classic series they use audience suggestions to put right what once went wrong. A brand new episode each night, with guest stars from the improv circuit. Oh boy! www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

GORDON SOUTHERN: YOUR NEW FAVOURITE COMEDIAN Mon 14 July

PLANNER

TOM CRAINE EDINBURGH PREVIEW Komedia

The 2010 Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee performs his brand new show, with jokes and songs about being an introvert in an extrovert’s world. When Richards was ten years old his parents went to Disneyland without him, and he never recovered. Socially inept, it might be contradictory to claim he’s introverted, whilst standing on stage performing. It seems he’s OK with the safety net of a script to catch him. It’s just the real life improvisation he struggles with.

Sun 6 July

Komedia

Having written for Mock The Week, Stand Up For The Week, Mad Bad Ad Show, Chris Addison’s Show & Tell, The Now Show and co-writing the BBC Radio 2 sitcom The Sharp End, it’s now time for Craine to get some recognition.

A likable, if a little strange chap, Richards will make you realise just how blissfully happy you are with your relationships and lifestyle. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

Having taken the unusual step of writing a show around a very public and painful break-up, as did his estranged partner at the same festival, its obvious Craine is no regular performer. He seems a gentle and decent chap, and many of the jokes are at his own expense. He’s got a knack for comic description, and this could be the show that sees him break into the limelight. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

JULIETTE BURTON: LOOK AT ME

ZOE LYONS: MUSTARD CUTTER

Thu 17 - Fri 18 July

Sun 20 July

Komedia

Upstairs at Three and Ten

Komedia

After 20 years in comedy, Gordon Southern is ready to be an overnight success! Back with a preview of his 10th solo show for the Edinburgh Festival, Gordon will be talking about his early years as a young man growing up in Essex.

Other shows want you to look at them. What will you see, if you Look At Me? Juliette Burton asks: Is what we appear to be who we are? She’s been fat, thin, everything between. Now, she’ll change even more! Wearing the hijab, dressing provocatively, male, obese, old, nude; can changing our outsides change who we are inside?

The fabulous host of the wonderful Bent Double (first Sunday of every month at the Komedia, Bent fans), comedy best newcomer nominee and Dave’s funniest joke of the Fringe winner, Zoe Lyons brings out on her own. Mustard Cutter is her brand new show covering everything from pan pipes to the price of lobster.

One half of critically acclaimed double act Mace and Burton, who scooped an Argus Angel Award at Fringe 2012, Burton is now onto her second solo show, and she’s as thought-provoking as ever.

A familiar face on TV, the mercilessly funny Lyons’ credits include: Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, DAVE’s One Night Stand and Don’t Sit In The Front Row. She also regularly appears on The Wright Stuff and Mock The Week.

Early adventures in food and beverage, in love, longing and tragic loss, all get a look in. Fast-forward to 2004 and a wine tour of Australia where he meets his future wife. But none of this is without obstacles. If this true story was the plot to a one-man comedy show, it would seem implausible and contrived. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

DAVID TRENT

JOHN KEARNS - SHTICK

LUCY PORTER - ME TIME

Mon 7 July

Sat 12 July

Mon 14 July Upstairs at Three and Ten

Komedia The ex-teacher returns with another broadside of virtuous anger from his battery of sardonic PowerPoint presentations. This preview of his return to the Edinburgh Fringe, is a high octane audio visual onslaught that promises to be the ultimate in Trentertainment™. Full of irritation and intelligence, Trent directs his bitterness, and righteous rage at the mendacity of modern life and pop culture with explosively funny results. From kids listening to rap, inane adverts and on to insignificant pop stars, there’s little that doesn’t annoy him in our society. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

ANNA MORRIS: WOULD LIKE TO THANK... TUE 22 JULY Upstairs at Three and Ten Acclaimed character comic, and star of BBC1’s Outnumbered, Anna Morris returns to Brighton after a sell-out run of her debut solo show Dolly Mixture, last year. Now she presents a preview of her highly anticipated second show - Would Like To Thank... It’s the Woman of the Year Awards 2014 and four diverse comedy creations are battling for your vote. The show, which puts the audience in control, proves that well-behaved women rarely make history... Songs, confessions, and a dramatic finale, all hosted by Georgina the Bride, star of Georgina’s Wedding Blogs.

www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

Another show from the winner of last year’s Foster’s Best Newcomer Award, Barry Award nominee 2014 and triple nominee at the Chortle Awards 2014, John Kearns. This true comedy original presents a show of new material, with no unifying theme in sight. This is about all we can say about the show. But we can tell you The Pentagon was designed with twice as many bathrooms as necessary. Segregation laws required ethnically separate toilet facilities when it was built. I assure Kearns is exponentially more amusing, and stranger, than that factoid. Make sure you find out how much more… www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

JOE WELLS: NIGHT OF THE LIVING TORIES Mon 28 July

Komedia Officially the loveliest person in Comedy (as voted by staff at BN1 Magazine) Porter returns to Brighton for an hour of feel -good stand-up. She will try to define her rightful place in history. Would she have been happier as a Victorian explorer or a 1920s Hollywood starlet? Lucy explains her frustrations with the modern world, from the trivial, to the more serious. Have ‘simpler times’ ever really existed? Would it be worth going back to a time before electric light, be rid of fake eyelashes and Nespresso? Is dying in childbirth preferable to sharing a world with the Kardashians? www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

MICHAEL FABBRI: OVER-SHARING Mon 28 July Komedia

Theatre Royal

When there’s no room left in Hell, The Conservative Party will walk the Earth! Joe Wells (Alexie Sayle support) digs up the grisly past of the Tory Party. WARNING - Contains graphic descriptions of Michael Gove.

Michael Fabbri previews his new Edinburgh 2014 solo show, which appears to be a un-themed collection of thoughts - that’s it really. Based in Brighton, he reached the final of So You Think You’re Funny in 2003. A growing force in the art of observational stand-up, Fabbri assumes the role of an awkward bemused onlooker. His slight detachment from the world gives him the perfect placing to launch razor sharp, and occasionally hilariously odd, insights. It’s this outsider stance that provides the core of what‘s great about Fabbri. You’ll never regard ordinary household in the same way again, after he’s shyly redefined them.

He might be so far left on the political spectrum he makes the average Brighton pinko look like Paul Nuttall, but you shouldn’t let his fierce political stance cloud your opinion of Joe Wells. Gags occasionally bow to rhetoric, but often Wells lets comedy gold slip through his net of rage.

FABLE

Exclusive interview with the talented emerging artist There are three things that strike me about singer songwriter Fable. Firstly she’s filled with near-boundless amount of enthusiasm for her debut recordings. Secondly, she’s got some big plans in mind. She means to action these plans as well. You can tell by the way her eyes light up every time she refers to a new strand in her plan for global pop domination. Thirdly, she might just be attempting to steal my lighter. Messing around with projects in the stifling insular confines of the Torbay band scene, she’s moved along the coast to Brighton, to make friends and music. A talented self-taught musician and vocalist, she’s got a clear idea of what she wants to sound like, something classical training wouldn’t offer her. “I wouldn’t have had this voice if I’d taken advice from singing teachers. They would be trying to make me sound like everyone else,” she tells me. With a mother into reggae and a father into rock, she had plenty of diverse musical influences bouncing through her childhood. She’s assimilated, combined and mutated the sounds she grew with, to produce something sounding, well… little like any of them. Yet the reference points connecting to her inspirations remain, if you listen carefully enough.

WATCH

By Stuart Rolt

Now a five track EP is in the can, with more songs ready to be recorded. The only public offering presently is a solitary track on Soundcloud, but that alone succinctly demonstrates the power and depth of Fable’s music. A little bit of luck and a whole heap of talent has resulted in her guest appearance on the eagerly awaited new Orbital album, which is due for release this autumn. Hopefully, hot on the heels of that release, will be Fable’s debut LP. Adamant live performance is where her main interest lies, Fable is unconcerned about the difficulties of recreating her complex studio sound. Gathering a band together, including two members of Skin’s solo project, she’s promising shows with no backing tracks, determined to provide audiences with an experience beyond the confines of a mere CD. Relishing the opportunity to develop a whole stage show, Fable approaches gigs as a rounded performance, rather than a simple rendition of an album. She also wants to include visual elements to complement the music.

Writing and recording tracks became an interesting process for Fable, but not always a smooth one. Although she was being paired with a range of different writers and producers, she felt that perhaps they weren’t truly writing for her. Then she ran into breaks-laden, electronic post-rock outfit Archive. Relatively unknown in their native Britain, Archive have enjoyed phenomenal success across Europe. They quickly understood the dark, twisted and cinematic sound the young Fable was trying to develop. Finally this collaboration provided the elusive natural-feeling relationship she strived for. Now she’s working with people who ignore convention, and share her frustration with the speed of evolution in music. “We’re going to do something a bit crazed. Scare people… That’s what we want to do!”

Like her namesake, many Fable tracks immerse the listener in a momentary fictional world, all of them with a subtle message about modern existence. A continuing theme in all of her output deals with the issues people get worked up about. She appreciates even the smallest thing can affect a larger picture. Over-dramatic perhaps, but there lies something compelling in the dark theatrics of Fable’s music. This merging of music and storytelling has led to mutterings hailing her as the new David Bowie in some dark corners. A bold statement, but it is a sanguinity that could be realised.

osed to “It’s supp . It’s not inment be enterta g there with a in sad just stand singing a e n o h p o r mic song.”

So has she finally found her calling? It seems all remaining now is for Fable to fine-tune her image, and slowly introduce herself and her work to the world. She appreciates it’s harder for women in music, raising the question if Miley Cyrus’ behaviour is down to her own mistakes or a purely cynical marketing plot. But it’s the fans she feels sorry for. “They haven’t got their own identity, they’re just twerking puppets. That’s what it’s come to.” Bold comparisons aside, there’s a certain buzz and air of possibility around Fable right now. She’s also planing a gig on Thu 31 July at The Hope (you heard it here first!). I know quite a few people who’ll be making sure they attend, just to see what the noise is about. What about my lighter? There are certain moments in life, when you know when something is inevitable. www.facebook.com/whoisfable Visit www.bn1magazine to listen to the new Track ‘I Speak Words’. Writers James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favourite storybook characters and smash them together in a modern classic.

Pharmaceutical trials are being marketed to jobseekers and students as a way of making money, turning the poor into guinea pigs.

A baker and his wife wish to have a child, Cinderella wishes to attend the King’s Festival, and Jack wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, they set out to break it. All the wishes may get granted, but there are consequences. One of Sondheim’s most popular works, it’s a musically sophisticated show with plenty of dark comedy.

SELF SERVICE

Sun 20 July

Tue 22 - Sat 26 July Marlborough Theatre

Wed 23 - Thu 24 July Theatre Royal Brighton

Two interlinked plays by Terence Rattigan, both set in a run-down South Coast hotel, directed by John Berry and performed a stone’s throw from Rattigan’s former home on Marine Parade.

Written and directed by John Godber, with star performances from Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street) and Joe McGann (Calendar Girls), this is a hilarious Oliviernominated romantic adventure.

In the first play, Table by the Window, a lonely divorcee tracks down her former husband, to resume a kind of half-life with him. Fusing sex and class war, this piece depicts marriage as a ghastly and violent battlefield. In Table Number Seven, a bogus Major is accused of sexual assault in the local cinema. He is bravely supported by the repressed lonely spinster, who manages the hotel and yearns for romance. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

Thu 24 July The Old Market A story with original music, cocktail sausages and tales about finding your way in the world. An Edinburgh preview, by former Belle and Sebastian songstress Catherine Ireton, Leaving Home Party, is about the ties that bind us, the small events that make us who we are and the spaces between belonging and un-belonging. Catherine never left home. She took a one way Ryanair flight to Gatwick in 2005. Now she’s got a flat, a job and a Tesco Clubcard. Tonight she is having a leaving home party to mark all of those tiny moments of letting go.

Little Soldier Productions bring us the tale inspired by Don Quixote’s wanderings. Two feisty senoritas and a downtrodden Englishman embark on a journey through medieval Spain taking on one of the most accomplished works of fiction ever written. Accompanied only by a flamenco guitarist, whose presence there makes no sense whatsoever, they will lead you to joy, pain and ultimate wisdom. This Edinburgh preview is an imaginative and provocative adventure of epic proportions, to be taken with a pinch of salt and a handlebar moustache. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

A selection of playlets by various writers, all related to the events of 9/11 and all directed by Kirsty Elmer. 14 pieces will be staged in promenade, utilising all the NVT theatre spaces to tell a range of intertwined stories. These events on September 11 2001, sent shockwaves across the globe; it was a day that was supposed to change the world forever. This is a thrillingly imaginative investigation into the legacy of 9/11 sees a team of major writers and thinkers exploring responses to the defining event of our times.

Wed 30 July Marlborough Theatre A show is about rating people based solely on their looks, and the recent worldwide trend of teenage girls posting videos on YouTube asking viewers to rate their looks. Pretty Ugly follows Louise Orwin’s trail of research into how Generation YouTube uses the ever widening field of social networking to reach others. There is a live YouTube experiment, some Britney, a tender and inappropriate love story, and some childhood toys. It is about our obsessions, and pretensions, and teenage girls- but don’t let that put you off. It’s really about how a growing number of us interact with the internet. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

stand-up paddle boarding Brighton Watersports

Ice-cream in one hand, beer in the other, while a waft of BBQ smoke engulfs your lungs, it’s that time of year again. The summer has officially arrived, along with the mass migration down to our lovely beach front. As you soak up the rays have you ever glanced across the glistening sea and thought: “WOW, there seems to be some biblical figure walking on water!”? Well you would be half right! It’s the new craze sweeping the country; Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP). Stand-Up Paddle Boarding originated in Hawaii, with a group of surfing enthusiasts wanting to capture on film the surfers in action up close. So they made a larger, more buoyant board they could stand on, using a paddle for steering and stability. Brighton Watersports on Kings Road decided to take the bold move to introduce the sport to Brighton around 10 years ago (one of the first in the UK) and has seen a massive increase in its popularity. “It’s a great way to boost all round muscle strength and tone, increasing your balance and concentration” Seb, our friendly instructor, tells us as we prepare at the shop with an introduction to Stand-Up Paddle Boarding. It was the longest (and what seemed hottest) day of the year, with a lovely calm sea, perfect for SUP and other watersports, so my adventurous partner and I paddled all the way to the Brighton Pier, if not a bit wobbly en route, with a great sense of achievement and fun. It’s a great thing being out in the water, in a totally safe environment with instructor close by, and there’s no way you can lose your board. You need good balance and a bit of patience when you start, but after a session on the water and some expert guidance you will be paddling to France in no time! With the weather being so kind this year, it seems silly not to sign up to their membership offer and get out on the sea for just £30 a month. Brighton Watersports offer Kayaking and Wakeboarding sessions, alongside many other activities. They also run a loyalty scheme that entitles you to a free SUP or Kayaking session after five goes, just ask in their shop for more details. A Sumo referee carries a short sword, called a tantō, in his belt to show he understands the seriousness of the decisions he makes. It also demonstrates his willingness to commit ritual suicide if he makes a mistake. Rumours FIFA are looking to introduce this are unfounded.

With the overwhelming support of the watersports industry, Brighton & Hove City Council and many local businesses, Paddle Round The Pier 2014 is set to be the biggest Paddle ever. Check out more at: www.paddleroundthepier.com

A brief battle once broke out between Honduras and El Salvador. Tensions were already high between these two states, and then Honduras won their meeting in a 1969 World Cup playoff. Gunfire was subsequently exchanged for about 30 minutes, before diplomacy and common sense prevailed.

BIZZARE SPORTING FACTS (PART 1) The smallest attendance at the World Cup finals was 300 at Romania and Peru’s clash during the 1930 Uruguayan tournament. In comparison the 1950 final in Brazil remains the highest attendance at any football match. More than 160,000 crammed in to see Brazil get unexpectedly beaten by Uruguay. That’s only 50 people less than Old Ship Beach on a Bank Holiday Saturday!

The word “Soccer” is a 1800s slang term, coming from comes from the abbreviation of “Football Association” to “Assoc”. From this came “Socca” and finally “Soccer”. Two hundred years later, and the term is now used by Americans to indicate nobody will be lumbering 14m with the ball in their hands… before falling over. Soccer legend Pele, real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, became a world star at the age of only seventeen, when Brazil first won the 1958 FIFA World Championship in Sweden. Just like Michael Owen, only completely different.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON NIGHT BIKE RIDE

BRIGHTON BEACH AQUATHLON Sun 13 July Hove Lawns For the webbed feet readers comes the unique open water aquathlon that has been described as the “swimmers revenge”. Not the most laziest of Sunday mornings, this event is a swim-run-swim sandwich. It begins with an 800m two-lap swim, then a 5km flat run, and finally finishing the gruelling event is another 400m swim in the sea. If this sounds too much to stomach, there is a relay options that allows a couple to complete the event together. For all the alpha exercise couples out there – the gauntlet has been thrown down.

BIG FUN RUN BRIGHTON Hove Park Sun 20 July If you are looking for a charity run event with a difference, Big Fun Run is the one for you. This jog is not concentrating on the winners, the fastest or those wearing the most lycra but instead about participation for all generations of the family. The run’s focus is on charitable raising through relaxed jogging, with a particular emphasis on fancy dress for those involved! www.bigfunrun.com/brighton

INSANITY

Sat 12 – Sun 13 July Tower Bridge to Brighton Beach For those cyclists who want to re-create a nocturnal version of June’s London to Brighton bike ride, this moonlit 60 mile routes is the more quiet alternative.

Freedom Leisure Centre Sat 26 July For those wanting to challenge themselves physically and mentally, Freedom Leisure Centre in Moulsecoomb, will be hosting Insanity fitness instructors Fran and Tora.

Avoiding the usual commuter traffic, the route winds down sleepy country lanes, tackling Devil’s Dyke in the early hours and then descending to the beach at sunrise. All the effort goes towards raising money for British Heart Foundation and it is £35 to register.

Not for the faint-hearted the participants will be put through the self-titled ‘World’s Toughest Workout’. Even if you can’t make it through the strenuous work out, your taking part will still benefit local charity, The Hove Trust.

New To Cinema Transformers: Age of Extinction – 10 July Contrary to the title of the newest film in the Michael Bay Transformers franchise, extinction does not seem to be on the cards for the fast and furious robots-in-disguise series. If you can’t wait for Transformers 5, set for 2016, watch former pants model and smell-the-fart actor Mark Wahlberg take the lead in the 4th installment this July, featuring an entirely new cast of human characters. Taking place four years after the Autobot/Decepticon battle in Chicago, the CIA are intent on hunting down and exterminating surviving fugitive machines whilst some Tony Stark type guy (Stanley Tucci) has other ideas.

Boyhood – 11 July After director Richard Linklater won the Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Boyhood has been eagerly awaited and already receiving positive reviews from many critics. Starring Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke (star of Linklater’s Before Sunrise trilogy), Boyhood focuses on a 12 year period in a young boy’s life while his parents try to raise him despite their divorce. Linklater examines his relationship with them over the years as he goes from child to young adult. This film started shooting in 2002 and has been a twelve-year project for Linklater and the cast.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes– 17 July From angry robots to angry primates, July is host to another sequel of the blockbuster kind, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Leading on from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a considerably more exciting reboot of Pierre Boulle’s creation than Tim Burton’s underwhelming attempt, DOTPOTA finds Caesar as the leader of a growing nation of genetically modified apes. When their territory is disturbed by a group of humans, who survived the virus unleashed 10 years before, both sides must fight for dominance and survival of their species.

Guardians of the Galaxy – 31 July It wouldn’t be summer without Marvel taking over our cinema screens, so here we are at the tenth installment in the comic company’s Cinematic Universe. This time, the superhero genre takes more of a comedic turn with Guardians of the Galaxy. Written and directed by Slither’s James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy stars Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper as a Raccoon bounty hunter. Set in space, an American pilot must seek the help of these unlikely allies after stealing an orb from the villainous Ronan (not Keating).

BEYOND THE WORLD CUP Short films inspired by the Sea BY HOWARD SEAL

If you should stroll down to the beach this month and stumble across the Brighton Big Screen, you probably won’t be surprised to find World Cup football and big budget blockbusters. However, you’d maybe be more surprised to encounter a mini film festival, exquisitely curated by Julia Horbaschk called “Beyond the Wave”; where shorts have taken on a different meaning and the wave isn’t Mexican. Running for a little more than an hour, she has put together eight films which, in their own unique way, explore the interaction between us and the sea. Amongst the films on show is the beautifully crafted North of the Sun - a multi-award winning documentary about two young men preparing to live through the severe Norwegian winter in a cabin hand-built from drift wood, surviving on out of date food, destined to be destroyed. Equally arresting is To the Sea - a drama about a young girl who struggles to cope with the disappearance of her father. His absence, the despair felt by her family and the attitude of the community leaves her family shattered. However in the wake of the hopelessness, she embarks on a dangerous journey, in which she learns self-reliance and the wisdom of mortality. This is Brighton is a touching celebration of the eponymous city, weaved together from 45000 stills. Made by 14 year old Caleb Yule, it is a reminder of why we choose to live in Brighton and what the city represents. Alan Stockdale, also based on the South Coast, created The Sea and Me, a beautifully shot award-winning film and a masterly

reminder of what a skilled film-maker can achieve in a mere 233 seconds. Inspired by the markings on their boats he explores the life of a local fisherman and what it means for him to live and work with the sea. I particularly enjoyed The Questions We Ask, a poetic enquiry into the nature of adventure. Standing alone on an inflatable stand-up paddle-board, Kalum Ko chose to cross the potentially hazardous straight from Vancouver to Victoria in British Columbia. An adventure which encouraged him to think more critically of why we seek out adventure, and what this can reveal to us about the human condition. Going down to the Brighton Big Screen to seek out this collection should prove to be less perilous, but hopefully equally rewarding. Credit should also be given to the organisers who put on such an inspiring and engaging raft of films amid the familiar sea of sport, sun-cream and surf.

FILM

A FINGER ON THE PULSE BY WAYNE IMMS

Five years ago, Jonathan Nicol founded Other Finger Films, a North Laines-based production company. Describing themselves as visual storytellers, they create cinematiclooking films for advertising campaigns and corporate communications. Recently, I had a look at their impressive portfolio and Jonathan gave me an insight into the company and its work… I understand you have a passion for storytelling. Which storytellers within the film world especially appeal to you? I love Wes Anderson and David Fincher for their unique ability to tell very different, distinct and stylised stories. That said, I genuinely look at those a little closer to me in my industry for inspiration. There’s a collective in the states called Public Record, they have such a beautiful, yet laconic way of telling stories that I can only try to emulate. The idea of people working together from different skill-sets like they do also inspires me. You founded Other Finger Films five years ago. How has it particularly developed since then? It started as me, fresh out of university running around with a camera and a skateboard, trying to use those tools to tell stories. Now I’ve got five guys who work for me regularly. We just shot our first TV ad, which will be on Channel 4, ITV and Sky. I can’t believe how things have changed. The website describes you as being interested in urban and alternative cultures. Can you elaborate on this? Urban and alternative are two quite disparate thoughts, I suppose. I grew up in the States in the 90’s, listening to Notorious B.I.G. and Hot 97. Hip Hop has always inspired me creatively. Nowadays, we seem to have a meeting of urban clothing and music, with alternative cultures like barbering and tattoos. These areas house such diversity. We’ve got a documentary coming out in mid-August called Ade: A portrait of an Artist, which I shot with photographer James Hole. We use the alternative culture of tattoos to help set the style of the film.

So, perhaps due to these interests, describe the distinctive look your films tend to have. We tend to gain recognition for our personal projects. Interestingly, it was working with James recently, where he gave me a critical insight into my own and therefore Other Finger Films’ style; he described it as observational, bordering on voyeuristic. Although this sounds negative, he ensures me that it was a compliment and I take it as such. Hip Hop, stylistically, shapes a lot of our work but, personally, I’m an outsider in many ways. I’m not a barber, I don’t have tattoos, I can’t draw to save my life but to observe people in an environment where they’re at ease socially or professionally is so much fun to watch. Is it relevant to you to be Brighton-based? And is this a special place for you, film-wise or otherwise? Brighton is such a huge force for me professionally. It’s diverse, accepting and relaxing, with its own amount of edginess so as not to be construed as soft. I went to school here for a couple of years and coming back after university was such a positive move. There are such awesome people around me, in my studio and people I work with. You don’t get such concentrated diversity in other cities like you do in Brighton, as it’s so small. You’ve made films for a wide range of clients. Sum up the importance of have a good client relationship and the process you may have when taking on a project. A good client relationship is a hard thing to get right. A project can only really work if there’s a level of trust. I like to lay out what’s expected from both sides, from the start of a project. We’re about working together creatively to tell a story in the best way. Creativity needs a leader, otherwise you end up with weak rubbish, but discussion and ideas en route are an important part of making something special. otherfingerfilms.co.uk

The Globe 77-78 Middle St, Brighton, BN1 1AL, 01273 770685

It’s always nice to pull yourself away from the beach after a hard day’s sun damage and head back into the jostle of restaurants and pubs, searching for a spot of decent afternoon dinner. It was to my delight we stumbled on an old favourite, an establishment I had not frequented in quite some time. The Globe on Middle Street, once the hipsters’ playground, now has a more subdued and relaxed feel, with a distinct shift towards the student market and a part takeover from the Sussex Student Union. For the typical student this is a haven, just far enough away from the commercialism on West Street and close enough to the scene setters in Middle Street, with added bonus of a late licence open until 2am every week night and 3am on weekends. Me and my dining companion settled down for some food and instantly noticed the intriguing array of ‘World Cup inspired’ burgers, themed around the competing nations’ teams. This included the The MIGHTY APOLLO (Greece) - Lamb burger, topped with tzatziki and Greek salad and The BRAZILIAN - Pãesde-queijo inspired beef burger (cheese inside the burger!), topped with spicy bean and pork salsa and a wedge of sweet potato. When England were still in the competition (even though they were never really in it!), there was the ever-so odd sounding ING-GER-LAAND - Beef Burger, brown sauce, mature English cheddar, and a Yorkshire Pudding (with a dash of gravy). I went for the slow-cooked Pulled Pork burger in brioche bun (£6.00) off the regular menu. It was packed full of delicately

cooked and flavoured pulled pork, house BBQ sauce, shredded pickled apple and red cabbage. My dining companion chose the ‘construct your own burger’ adding ingredients to taste. She went for a beef, bacon, Monterey jack cheese, Onion rings and Guacamole burger Yummers! There was also a tasty side dish of homemade beef chilli fries and cheese(£3.50), filling enough on their own and surprisingly not too greasy. A perfect accompaniment to the richness of the pork and smoky flavours achieved in the beef burger. We finished with a rather lip-smacking and calorific Krispy Krème Burger. A regular beef patty with bacon in a toasted Krispy Krème doughnut bun with sugar glaze. I have to say this was a clever and delicious (if not dangerous for your arteries) take on a savoury/sweet creation. Perhaps There’s a nice choice of drinks and light Ales plus some cracking student deals from as cheap as £2 a pint. Why not sit downstairs and catch a game on the big screen, with regular film nights and all the World Cup coverage. If you like to dance then get on down to Sophisticated Mischief on the last Saturday night of the month for sleazy groovy tunes, 60’s soul, 70’s funk, chap fashion and cocktails. Free entry and running from 10pm until 3am.

Crafty Chooks As soon as the weather starts to err on the side of sunshine, I find myself faced with a dilemma as to what to do with my spare time. Part of me loves nothing better than staying indoors with the blinds down, surrounding myself with tasty food and watching a plethora of films or some corny, yet addictive TV show. The other part thinks that if I don’t get outside and enjoy some glorious rays while they’re around, I will be wasting the unpredictable summer sun. I mean, we are a country notorious for variable seasons and who knows when the next clear day will be. So one bright afternoon last month I decided, what better way to make use of this fine day than to leave the adventures of Honey Boo Boo at home and combine tasty food with the sunshine down at Crafty Chooks in Hove instead. Previously the location of the Tin Drum on Second Avenue, the Golden

Lion Group, (who very generously put the prestigious Hove Place practically on my doorstep), whet my taste buds once again with their new bar and rotisserie. Crafty Chooks is contemporary and welcoming at first glance. There were mums and tots sat comfortably outside while on the other end of the scale; some businessmen sat inside, no doubt discussing business things. The bar and restaurant were clearly defined, allowing for intimate dining or a couple of beers depending on your mindset. The interior is stylish without being ostentatious, making it accessible to all types of custom. The drinks menu hosts the usual range of wines and spirits but with the addition of some classic cocktails and an extensive variety of interesting beers (try the 8.3% Flying Dog Raging Bitch from USA!). While we went for a rather safe and refreshing soft San Pellegrino Limonata (£2.75) as refuge from the heat, our food choices were far from plain. To start, we went for the Grilled Buttermilk Halloumi and Aubergine Kebabs with crisp maneesh and gazpacho salsa (£6.25) and Deep-Fried Chicken & Sweet Potato Beignets

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 49 ]

with smoked garlic and paprika sour cream (£5.25). The halloumi was just the right amount of soft, salty and squeaky, wrapped in thin, chargrilled aubergine and finished with fresh salsa. The beignets were a revelation; soft, light sweet potato and tender chicken inside a crispy coating, the taste amplified when complimented by the paprika sour cream.

A HOOKS IS CR A F T Y C THAT TISSERIE BA R & R O AT ES IN GRE SPECIALIS E N AN D GE CHICK F R E E R AN E RS . CR A F T B E

It would be criminal to visit a rotisserie restaurant without trying the house Spit Roast Half Chicken (£8.95), complete with house seasoning and BBQ sauce (choice of smokey, sweet and spicy). To accompany the chook, the Double Cooked Chunky Chips (£2.95) were a must and to satisfy our vegetable group, the Chargrilled Veg, Basil and Pine Nut Crumb (£3.25). The meat? Succulent with subtle herby flavours and the smokey BBQ sauce a playful tangy hit. The chips were mouth-wateringly crispy and salty with a fluffy centre. The veg was a generous portion with a nutty pesto crumb. Delicious, if a tad on the oily side. Truly fulfilled and still feeling like nothing we had eaten was majorly unhealthy, it seemed right that we should end with a refreshingly naughty dessert – Lemon Meringue Pie with citrus sherbet (£4.95). Personally as a big fan of gooey meringue and tart lemon curd, this pie did not disappoint. The sherbet certainly added a new dimension (prepare for some zingy mouthfuls!). Crafty Chooks really are crafty. Their menu is poultry-led by name but attention has been paid to the alternative meat and vegetarian options too (6 hour Braised Shoulder of Lamb and Wild Mushroom and Twineham Grange Risotto). The food feels distinctively fresh and thoughtfully made, with a meticulous eye for aesthetic and culinary detail. Oh and it doesn’t hurt that the 80s playlist was thoroughly enjoyable and our very helpful waitress Aida deserves a big shout-out. www.craftychooks.co.uk BY HOLLY COZENS

Velo Café

BY NATHAN BURR

It’s a hot early summer’s afternoon and I have taken an hour out from a busy day cutting hair to find myself sitting outside the ecologically-minded Velo café, another start up that has appeared in the London Road area over the past six months. Velo is actually situated in the newly restyled Level, next to a skate bowl, which makes me so envious I wish I was 14 years old again. The word movement comes to mind as I sit hear listening to the rolling of wheels across smooth concrete. Skateboard wheels, scooter wheels, bike wheels, buggy wheels; everywhere I look the world is moving around me here. I am a keen walker and have taken on the 100 miles of the South Downs Way on more than one occasion. For me movement has never so much been about arriving at a destination as enjoying the journey itself. Sitting here watching the world go round around me makes me aware of what an important role pit stops play in our busy lives today. Places to take the weight off weary feet, to gain perspective on the day, to let the kids off the leash to burn off some of that never-ending energy. Café Velo, it strikes me, is such a place. Opening just before Christmas, Velo has quickly gained a reputation amongst my clients for its good food, drink and ambience especially parents who think that it’s ideal for grabbing a well deserved coffee after supervising their kids at the newly designed play park all morning.

Rose Walk The Level, Brighton, BN1 4ZN

The first thing that catches my eye as I approach Velo is its subtleness in its lush green surroundings. This may be due in a large part to it having a green roof. I am told that the roof is for more than just show. It helps to insulate inside in the winter, keep cool during the summer and most impressively it helps to collect rainwater, which is then used to flush the loos. Staying with the eco-friendly philosophy, Velo uses old tea bags and coffee beans as compost for a small herb garden to the side of the building. Once a week a community gardening group hones its skills under the Levels head gardener’s watchful eye. Velo then uses the herbs grown here in its dishes, fresh mint tea for example. Nice. Inside Velo I am struck by the soft summer light and airiness of the place. It feels like a contemporary German Huf Haus. At one end can be found the café/bar with modern stainless steel kitchen, an impressive looking coffee machine, homemade food on display and draught lager on tap. At the other end is a drop-in bicycle repair surgery. The bike bay as it’s referred to, will cater for all your bicycle needs from a new inner tube to a full MOT. The bike bay’s services are available by either booking online or simply popping in. In the time I’m in here a couple of BMXers pop in to use the pump, free of charge; what a nice neighborly thing to do.

Reading this the combination of food, drink and bike repairs may sound a bit to up in the air and confusing but I can assure you it isn’t. Between the two ends of this space two immaculate bicycles hang high above the diners’ heads that give this place more a Tour de France feel than a mechanics workshop. There is enough space, both physically and conceptually, for this all to work. In fact it feels refreshing for a place to have more than just a theme these days. Velo as well as meaning ‘bicycle’ in French, also comes from the word ‘velocipede’, which refers to any foot machine that allows us to move faster than running; a ‘fast foot machine’. The world around us is a ‘fast foot machine’, sometimes we just need to sit down and rest our feet. While most places will be showing the World Cup and England’s overpaid ‘superstars’ falling at the very first hurdle, Velo will be screening all the legs of the greatest cycling tours taking place this summer. And if sitting watching all that cycling inspires you to visit the shed and brush off the cobwebs from your old bike then I suggest you take a little ride down here. Velo organizes public cycling outings in and around Brighton twice a week. One on Sunday mornings, which meet at 8.30am for coffees before setting off at 9am. The other a Wednesday evening ride, this one sets off at 6.45pm. These are social cycle rides and the routes change each week. The routes are tailored to accommodate both your hardened lycra wearing cycling enthusiast and the wind in your hair, basket and bell cyclist who prefers more chatting to chafing. Whatever spins your wheel, all are welcome. On the recommendation of the staff we order the homemade lasagna, which arrives as a healthy hearty portion, a bacon and Brie toasted sour dough sandwich with caramelised red onion and rocket. Along with this we have a side order of green bean salad. Both the lasagna and toasted sandwich are devoured quickly and washed down with a can of sparkling San Pellegrino Aranciata. But the star of this little show is the green bean salad; green beans are joined by olives, raisins, peppers and onions and a lemon zesty couscous in this summer medley. Now I’m not usually one for ordering just a salad but I must say that this is so nice and light on its own it’s perfect for a hot day like today. Full up but unable to resist a pudding I tuck into a gluten free chocolate cake, which is heavenly but at lunch time sends me into a semi food coma. I sit here daydreaming and doodling in the sun. I’ve taken my foot off the pedal and happy to just sit and watch the rest of the world turning around me. For a lunchtime holiday destination I can seriously recommend Velo at the Level.
