A note from the editors... It’s July, so welcome to our Festival Special. BRIGHTON & HOVE'S LARGEST INDEPENDENT CULTURE GUIDE, SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES, THE ARTS AND EVENTS
This month will again see thousands of young (and a few older) people flock to the British countryside for a majestic decades-old ritual. They’ll stand in a field, drinking cheap cider and venerating the latest singing sensation, until rain starts to fall.

Nobody knows why the weather gods decide to soak this fair land every time they see a girl in denim cut-offs and a outlandish hat dancing outdoors, not even Brian Cox can explain the phenomenon. Admittedly he’s not a meteorologist, but he is very handsome and probably knows a lot of other things.

Your best bet is to embrace this watery madness. As long as you have some clean dry socks back at the tent, Kings Of Leon turn up and your mum’s car hasn’t sunk into the mud, everything should be OK. This is a time of character building – a coming of age rite for the YouTube generation. Whatever you face in later years, you’ll be able to smile and say: ‘This is nothing, compared to the tsunami of mud, N2O bottles and baby wipes that swept me off my feet at Snotlands 18!’

EVENTS NEWS WHAT’S ON IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE THIS MONTH
DISABILITY PRIDE
SAT 14 JUL HOVE LAWNS disabilitypride.org.uk
England’s unique Disability Pride event is returning to Hove Lawns, on Sat 14 Jul after the success of last year’s event. The idea behind the event came from disabled Brighton mum Jenny Skelton, who has also adopted three children with various disabilities, in an attempt to break down the barriers of how people view both visible and invisible impairments and conditions. Jenny said: “We want to celebrate our identities and feel less isolated in the city, as we engage with non-disabled people, by hosting a great day out for all!” After last year’s event, which attracted over 2,000 attendees, Pride Disability 2018 hopes to further raise awareness of the diversity and value of disabled individuals.
PADDLE ROUND THE PIER SAT 7 - SUN 8 JUL HOVE LAWNS paddleroundthepier.com
It’s that time again for the world’s biggest free charity beach festival to return to Brighton & Hove! On Sat 7 and Sun 8 Jul, Paddle Round the Pier comes to Hove Lawns and the surrounding sea, bringing with it a bunch of different activities both wet and dry! Water babies will be able to kayak, kitesurf and swim at the event, while those who are a little less inclined to dip their toes in the water can take in the atmosphere with live music, ‘have a go’ opportunities and much, much more. Just remember to sign up online beforehand! The paddle itself is between £20-30, and there’s bound to be hundreds of participants who have fashioned something quirky for the sail, with Brighton and Hove Albion always putting on a memorable show. Artists such as One Eyed Jacks, Josh McGovern and Dakka Shanks will rock the mainly stage for your entertainment, while street and urban sports, ukulele shows and theatre lectures, provided by students of the University of Brighton, will accompany the afternoon too. If all that weren’t enough, dog owners are also invited to participate in a world record attempt of largest number of dogs on paddle boards at any one time. Fun for all the family - and even our four-legged friends!
(c) Robert Day
The event will run from midday until 19:00, after a short parade along the promenade at 11:30am, led by Unified Rhythm - a carnival band with over 80% disabled members. Throughout the day, there will be live music, acts and performances, as well as speeches from disabled individuals, with works from disabled artists and stalls to help raise money for local organisations who seek to support and provide activities to local families, friends and carers. This free event is set to be a great day out for the whole family.

LATITUDE FESTIVAL
THURS 12 - SUN 15 JUL HENHAM PARK, SOUTHWOLD latitudefestival.com
It’s a great Western tradition to go crazy with your mates when the DJ cranks up Mr Brightside at the end of a night out. But just imagine how much better that would be when surrounded by tens of thousands of people at a festival? Well, this summer, Latitude are making it happen. Las Vegas quartet The Killers are the main headline act, however the festival is staying true to its indie roots with the appearance of Solange, Alt-J, plus long-time Scottish folk rockers Belle and Sebastian. There’s also Black Honey, Fickle Friends and Rag N Bone Man, making Sussex proud of its musical expats.
18
Across the wooded areas Alcove and Solas, festivalgoers are able to find emerging artists from across the musical spectrum. The Faraway Forest and Lavish are arts spaces, visually spectacular and feature live art performances. Even kids and teens are accommodated for with specific activities and areas just for them. No surprise Latitude previously won awards for Best Family Festival and Best Family Day Out.
ynotfestival.com
Why just go to a festival? Why not a mini-golf tournament and paint fight too? Add a fun fair? Why not? For one weekend a year, the stunning Peak District countryside becomes home to Y Not Festival: the embodiment of pushing boundaries in all that is expected at a British music festival. Since 2005 when it began life as an overspilling house party in the deepest, darkest Derbyshire, there has been steady, organic growth, its lineup getting better each year to reflect this. This year’s incredible lineup includes The Libertines, Catfish and The Bottlemen, and Jamiroquai as headliners, with Welsh legends Manic Street Preachers, Kaiser Chiefs and festival veterans The Levellers also making the bill. But fear not - it’s not just old bangers your dad listens to, there’s also Blaenavon, Pale Waves, Bryde and more waving the flag for the up-and-comers corner. With panoramic countryside views, local ales, food and more live music than you can shake a stick at... all you need to bring is yourself, some wellies and a killer fancy dress outfit.

You could as easily lounge by the pool, luxuriate in a hot tub, take relaxing treatments or be inspired by talks. There’s even workshops, a dog show, a fancy dress parade and a range of incredible activities.
BYLINE FESTIVAL
FRI 24 - MON 27 AUG ASHDOWN FOREST, EAST SUSSEX bylinefestival.com
Are you ready for a festival that dubs itself as being “a carnival of free speech and independent media”? Hosted over four days in August, Byline Festival will be taking place in Pippingford Park in Sussex this year, having partnered with the Frontline Club. With workshops and performers, as well as guest speakers such as Hugh Grant and John Cleese, this festival has loads of activities to get involved with; it’s virtually impossible to be bored! It’s also notable for its lack of commercialism, and that it is founded by two people; one has a punk background, the other being a playwright and dramatist. Among other festival highlights, there will be a BBC Virtual Reality Tent, where you can immerse yourself ten-minute films such as A Trip Down The Nile, as hosted by BBC volun-teers. There is also The Bad Press Awards, who, with their tagline, say that they are “campaigning for Truth and Trust in Britian’s Feral Press.” There will also be announcements relating to Byline Festival 2019, as well as a Drag Queen Miss Byline Beauty Pageant, which will take place in The Other Bit. This festival also does not shy away from being innately political; featuring topics such as Brexit, Fake Enviromental News, Whistleblowers Make History, Putin’s World Disorder, and what has been dubbed “Trumpocracy”, this is the place you need to be this summer.

TOILETS Festival toilets are the stuff of legend. Anyone who’s experienced the Arthurian majesty of the Glastonbury ‘long drop’ will know this. But when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. For the squeamish (or anyone with a sense of smell), most festivals will service their bogs between 6am and 9am. If you can’t move your bowels unless some filth has been smeared around with a fetid cloth and replenished the paper, this is the your dump window. Always take your own toilet roll-you’ll be able to wipe with wild abandon and it can be used as makeshift currency on Sunday afternoon. For the faint-hearted, Amazon sell vapor masks for under a tenner, which will negate any toxic stench you might encounter. FYI, that box of sawdust by compost loos is there for a good reason. Use it.
TENTS If you’re camping with other people, try and think about how all your tents are positioned. Done cleverly, you can divert people from walking through the middle of your patch, which legally enables the declaration of an autonomous state on Sat afternoon. Pitch so you sleep up any sloping ground - a hangover is much worse when blood has been rushing to your head all night. Padlocking your tent is pointless, people will just slash their way in and it’s probably worth more than any contents. Unless they’re an integral part of your tent’s structure or you’re in a hurricane, guyropes are for pussies. The only purpose they serve is rousing you every time the neighbouring ketamine kids return to their tents. Conversely, if you’re lost, you can always pass time pretending those ropes are lasers and you’re Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. Loudly humming the theme is optional, depending on how much you want nearby people to know what you’re doing. Take your tent home with you. Dumping your gear at a festival puts prices up for next year and marks you out as a massive cockwomble.
FOOD There’s a discussion to be had about the value of onsite food against the hassle of dragging your own eats across the campsite. The former will certainly open you up to a world of gastronomic delights, expense and servile queuing. Although taking a stove and pans will elevate you amongst your fellow campers, it is a massive arse. Whatever you do, please attempt to eat some fruit and veg whilst keeping properly hydrated. It’s not much fun being epically constipated with a head full of mandy. You can easily live for three days on bananas, cereal bars and water. Just saying.
LOOKING DOWN THE WRONG END OF THE TELESCOPE It’s a festival. Everyone is getting bang on it. Fair enough. However, don’t be that knob who needs medical attention because he’s mixed uppers and downers, and now wants his lick anything staying still. Be sensible about dosing - if you really must. Once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. But, you’re not Hunter S Thompson - you’re studying geography at a plate glass university. Don’t get so caned it interferes with reaching for the laser or compromises bowel control. Do be careful what leisure-time pharmaceuticals you buy on-site as well. Ask any dealer for their EU Drug Traceability Certificate. Ideally you should be looking for fair trade or artisanal narcotics from a sustainable source, where a larger proportion of profits return to the producer.
WHAT TO TAKE Go get yourself a brick phone - the sort of prehistoric technology your dad used in 2002. The battery will last for two weeks and thieves will only laugh when they see it. Clothes pegs and duct-tape are useful items. Don’t take anything with you that is too valuable to lose. But do bring interesting toys, clothes you can layer, antibacterial gel, sunscreen, a torch and as much fun as you can carry. But no matter what you do - don’t take one of those 80L toploading backpacks. Nothing screams “rob me” more.

EXIT FESTIVAL
THURS 12 - SUN 15 JUL SERBIA www.exitfest.org/en
Situated in the 18th century colossal Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia, EXIT Festival began as a student movement which is credited with the downfall of an oppressive regime. Although no longer as political as it once was, it is still worthwhile to attend this Summer. The festival has hosted world music stars across more than thirty stages since its inception in 2000. Some of the artists who will be performing this year are David Guetta and Martin Garrix, Grace Jones (described as a “living legend”), Fever Ray, Jax Jones, and with more to come. The surroundings to the festival also make it an attractive and well situated venue. The Strand beach is located only twenty minutes away from the festival; it’s a great way to explore the Danube river. EXIT Festival’s camping area is right on; with warm weather in July, it’s the ideal place to be after you finish for the day. The city of Novi Sad is also a cultural capital, and has even been recognised as the European Youth Capitial 2019.
This community was founded 25 years ago, based on the idea of creating a dream nation, whilst celebrating cultures from across the globe. This is needed more than ever before.

Detroit’s hiphop duo return to the UK next month to continue their legacy Your music career has spanned nearly three decades – what would you say have been the biggest changes to the hiphop scene in that time?
The grittiness of Detroit and having a underdog mentality sparks inspiration in the city.
The biggest change would have to be how music is ingested and how it is put out into the world.
Two of the original members you grew up with and worked with have since sadly passed – how much of their influence is still present in Slum Village?
Are you finding that subjects you write about have changed as time goes on? If so – how, and why?
Their influence is still greatly present in the music and performance of SV.
Naw, I have always written about what is current and what I’m seeing in my surroundings, my situation and sticking to the facts, if you do that you can’t go wrong.
You’ve worked with some incredible musical talent over the years – including John Legend, Kanye West, BustaRhymes and Q-Tip – what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt along the way?
What inspires you now compared to the Fantastic – Vol 2.0 era? My inspiration now comes from looking back on the span of my career, the ups and downs and that I am still able to do music. Do you ever feel any pressure (from fans or the industry) to live up to that album – considered one of the most important hiphop records of all time? Naw, I feel that every project is a piece of art that can be enjoyed by the fans, and most classics are based on timing - and with that album it was timing. What do you think it is about Detroit which develops so many musical greats – from yourselves and Aaliyah to The White Stripes and Madonna – across many genres but most prominently hiphop?
Not to lose your passion for the music and always speak your truth in your music. Who would you be keen to work with again? Umm, I wish Baatin was living. He was a great talent and I would love to have him here now to see what we would create in this era. What can we expect from your live show in Brighton in August? You can expect tons of energy form me and Young RJ as we go through the music history of SV, from the beginning to now... lots of fan participation and just a good time. Slum Village come to Brighton’s Concorde 2 on Sun 12 Aug.

Growing up in a household where your father continually bellows out Bernard Herrmann’s scores from any of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, it’s hardly surprising frontman of Boy Azooga, Davey Newington found a profound interest in music. While performing as a drummer for many bands for most of his early career, Davey plugged away in his spare time creating and perfecting the band’s debut album 1, 2 Kung Fu by himself. Since then, he has recruited three friends, Daf Davies, Dylan Morgan and Sam Barnes to help him form the Boy Azooga live quartet. Opening up the interview, I was intrigued to finally get to the bottom of the band’s name ‘Boy Azooga’. Growing up, he exclaimed there was a film called The Little Rascals he loved watching. “Me and my cousin used to watch round my gran’s house, where there is a chant that goes ‘Azooga-azooga-azooga’.” In a way, it added a personal touch of his childhood memories to this next step into his future. From an early age, he was surrounded with music as both of his parents, from pop-music to classical jazz. However, unusually Davey exclaimed found a lot of his interest in music originated from video games. “Another big influence, which sounds ridiculous but was actually games I used to play as a teenager, games like Tony Hawk’s Underground and other skating games because they always had amazing soundtracks. You’d either have hip-hop or punk”, which he exclaims he couldn’t get enough of.
24
It wasn’t long before Davey soon found his musical drive, playing as the drummer in Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, as well as many of his
friends bands, including keys. However, 1, 2 Kung Fu was his first debut album of his own. “While I was making it we weren’t a band yet, so I wasn’t really worried about there being singles. It felt like my own outlet for the things I was into, and it’s more of a celebration of the music.” Davey explains it felt more “like a mixtape”, however he felt “conscious about it having a close to it, because bands like Deerhunter and The Avalanches, both of their albums have a proper interlude to them and that’s exactly what I wanted.” After recording the album, he recruited his three band members back in December 2016 and they have been working together, and touring since. This summer sees a whole lot of festival appearances from Boy Azooga. “It’s pretty much festival season up until September which we feel really lucky to be doing. We’re really excited for Green Man Festival, because it’s one we’ve always loved and have always anticipated the line-ups each year.”
His first festival experience was at Glastonbury back in 2008, “with my girlfriend, it completely blew my mind. And then on I went to Glastonbury for about four years from the age of about 16.” From then on, his later teens were filled with varied festival experiences. I asked if he felt playing festivals was different to going to them. “When you’re playing them, you can’t let your hair down as much until after. If you’re going to a festival then, there’s a definite increase in not really caring and daytime drinking become a lot more accessible.” He explains laughingly, for him “playing gives you a little more of a professional head.”
Award wiiing studio and rehearsal rrm complex Van and Equipment Hire, Bar, Venue and Cafe 25% NUS DAYTIME Conceeion
On speaking to Davey, he was set to begin recording the second album the following day, as he’d “love to get into the cycle of constantly recording, touring and getting my music out there.” And of course, fans, do not fear, maracas will be involved. Boy Azooga play Green Man, Blue Dot and End of the Road Festivals this summer.

If there’s something the people of Brighton are ever proud of and thankful for, it’s the city’s roaring music scene - from the abundance of venues who showcase a variety of music for every taste, to the opportunities given to the many budding musicians who reside here. The same can be said for punk-pop trio Dream Wife. This fierce and fun-loving band consisting of Rakel Mjöll (vocals), Alice Go (guitar, vocals) and Bella Podpadec (bass, vocals) met in Brighton whilst studying a few years back and are a refreshingly original example of why our music scene here rocks. Alice explains how the band are based in London now, but Brighton will always have a soft spot in their hearts. Having played at The Great Escape last year, the band were back again this year and played as part of Annie Mac’s Beach Party. “It’s nice for us to be back in Brighton, there’s always a good feeling there… kind of nostalgic,” she tells me. Although the three of them fully formed together here, Bella and Alice met back at a battle of the bands when they were only sixteen. Later, Bella and Rakel lived together at university, then on a sober night out they spoke about being in a band and went on from there. I speak with Alice and the band about their self-titled debut album which came out in January this year. “We released the album and then four days later we went to Australia. It was an amazing time out there, but strange coming back to UK... It was an exciting time and has been ever since”. Dream Wife had previously let out a self-produced EP, which they’ve described as a huge learning curve for all of them. With the album they’d wanted to bring the songs’ live energy to the records, so they recorded a lot on tapes. “It’s something you’ve been left alone with for a long time… then it’s out for everyone to listen to, it’s so surreal.” There was also the matter of understanding their own relationship with the songs, and the fragility musicians can feel when their work is exposed to the public. Alice offers that you need to be vulnerable
when putting ideas together with the rest of the band, writing and creating songs in the practice room. “We all understand it together, and it makes it easier, and then easier to share with other people… there’s that strength and solidarity in terms of sharing songs that are personal to each of us for so many reasons… it can mean so many different things to so many different people.” That blissful sense of collectivism is one of the reasons the band are super excited to get into some festivals, including the excellent Standon Calling on Thurs 26 – Sun 29 July. After they saw a circle pit happen at a gig in Germany, it stirred something inside them. Apparently Rakel is amazing at rallying a crowd, and it’s not as easy in a music venue, or club, so they plan to have the audience going wild at their performances, so watch out. They’re also elated by upcoming shows in Chicago and Japan, especially as none of them have ever been to Japan before, let alone performed there. “Everywhere we go its always exciting seeing how people respond to songs and what the audience is like because it’s always different in different places.” We speak about their inspiration for their songs, Alice assuring me that they don’t question it too much. “It’s the stuff we’re into, the stuff we know, the stuff our friends are talking about and what surrounds us. It’s kind of our culture coming through into our music.” We then go on to the topic of gender - an all-female punk band is something that does not seem too frequent in the music industry or the media. “It’s impossible for us to say anything else. Growing up as women - that has just shaped who we are, but gender should be a secondary to us… a band shouldn’t just be a gender and we don’t want to shy away from questions about gender, but don’t want it to define us” says Alice. “It’s another way of not taking a woman seriously as a musician. It’s a way to digest a woman not as a hard-working musician, but kind of like an accessory to music.” Dream Wife play Standon Calling on Thurs 26 – Sun 29 July.
DREAM WIFE’S GUIDE TO FESTIVALS THIS SUMMER ON FESTIVALS TO GO TO: BLUEDOT
Dream Wife deemed it “a really special fest… Indulging in science and then going to a rock show is ultimate luxury, it’s like having your cake and eating it.”
EAT RIGHT
“Make sure you eat right and still look after yourself. Look after your body and look after yourself.”
DON’T GET SUNSTROKE
We’ve had some bad experiences with that, it creeps up when you least expect.
RESPECT
Respect everyone around you, there are going to be people tripping out and really drunk, just make sure people have your back
Bella and Rakel have started drinking HUEL. It’s basically powderised everything and it’s powering Dream Wife along the way right now.
DON’T BE SELFISH
BE OPEN
SHARE THE LOVE
“A festival is a journey, follow whatever comes your way, it’s a place to explore things but do it safely. Go into it open minded.”
“
There’s a strength and solidarity in terms of sharing songs that are personal to each of us for so many reasons... It can mean different things to different people.”
Make sure everyone is acknowledged around you, don’t be selfish at a festival. It’s about music and love, embrace the music, embrace the love. Don’t be a dick. Embrace the golden moments.”

This unique festival will be a spectacular showcase, immersing attendees in plenty of art and culture with a new title for this year: Terra Firma. His contributions to music shouldn’t be underestimated. This CV since the 70s sees collaborations with Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, Debbie Harry and Eric Clapton, along with unleashing careerdefining moments for Madonna, Diana Ross, Bowie and Duran Duran. There’s also the disco-shaping work with his two most personal projects, Chic and Sister Sledge. it’d be a sadder human existence without Good Times, Le Freak, Lost in Music or We Are Family. But there’s an insistence he isn’t inflatable. “That’s the truth of any business. I’m just the same as everyone else, it’s just that I do so much. After a while, some of it has to work.” For over 15 years he was the go-to guy to slap sophisticated funk on a record. Working and playing hard, he only managed a break when hedonism forced him into rehab for eight months. Michael Jackson then asked him to work on the History album. “At that point I thought: ‘Oh. I guess the studio isn’t that scary after all.’ I realised no-one ever forced coke up my nose. I did it voluntarily. I worked with Michael and went: ‘OK, great. I didn’t do coke and didn’t drink. No problem.’ And I never did it again.” After 26 years, a new Chic album is finally on the verge of release. The first without his beloved co-founder Bernard Edwards, it’s been an ever-evolving project which he’s not hurried to complete. “I don’t have to make it for

No-one goes into the studio to make a flop. I actually love doing the work, so I’ve never stopped.” myself, I started out as an arranger, fixing other people’s music. That’s just as satisfying as doing Chic music, it doesn’t feel any different.” Like all the band’s albums it was planned as a concept work, paying homage to the musicians instrumental in his career. He’d just been stricken with a severe bout of cancer and was thinking about his legacy. “I wanted to leave some current record of the way that I saw the world.” Then we started losing the people he was talking about, incredible artists like Joni Sledge, David Bowie and Prince. Concern’s it might be considered capitalising on these deaths then brought a respectful delay. The recent loss of Joni Sledge had a particularly profound effect on him. Forming Sister Sledge with siblings Debbie, Kim and Kathy, their career was stalling when Rodgers and Edwards were introduced to them. “We chose an unknown group. We said: ‘Let’s show you what we can do. We can take someone who doesn’t sell any records and really create something.’” The resulting breakthrough album, We Are Family, went platinum and established the sisters as disco legends. Although his portfolio is aweinspiring, he doesn’t seem fazed by it all. After all, being a musician is just a job he adores doing. “That’s was what I always planned on being when I was younger, so I was just hoping to be in a symphony orchestra. I had no idea I would be the composer and the boss. It’s like: ‘Wow, really? Holy cow, that’s amazing.’” Nile Rodgers & Chic play LoveBN1Fest, at Brighton’s Preston Park, on Sun 5 Aug. His album, It’s About Time, is due out on Fri 7 Sept.

It’s not because he craves more money or exposure, he’s sold over 200 million albums and his songs about unity and celebration have delighted billions. “I don’t really do it for the success part,” he tells me. “I hope it’s successful, don’t get me wrong. No-one goes into the studio to make a flop. I actually love doing the work, so I’ve never stopped.” Having an ever-eager audience undoubtedly helps. Recent years have seen him become a huge attraction at his own FOLD shows and festivals like Glastonbury and Love Supreme. Only the night before, he’s been playing to the great and good at the prestigious Serpentine Summer Party.

GROW40 Prêt à manger tout?
BY NAMMIE MATTHEWS
There’s an unsuspecting veranda on the corner of Kensington Gardens and North Road. You know the one, with its fold-out chairs full of people sipping their coffees at the weekend. You’ll have walked past it many times, probably without so much of a wonder as to what’s going on inside. But that, dear readers, is where you’d be missing out.
and arrives theatrically topped with a smoke cloche. The citrus-y flavours of the yuzu balance the seafood perfectly, lifting the entire dish. I’m also served the burrata with tomato consommé, which is slow pressed through a cheese cloth over 48 hours. As you can probably imagine, it was delicious, and I slurped up every mouthful.
I took a long lunch to Grow40 a couple of weeks back to try their new menu. Steve, the long-time owner, has recently partnered up with celebrated Brighton chef Phil Bartley (of Hove Place, The Cricketers and Great British Charcuterie Co) to launch Grow40’s upstairs wine bar L’Atelier du Vin - a classy joint comprising a wine list 600 strong. Now they also have a menu to match - an impressive a la carte which takes the previous menu up a notch. I’m shown my seat and shown the menu, but for me there’s only one option: to let Steve do the choosing (after all, I eat everything, and he does know the menu better than I do) and leave sommelier Alex in charge of the wine pairing.
The real treat for me however was my main - halibut served with cockles and lemongrass, with a delectably creamy risotto on the side. I was surprised when Alex brought a Californian red wine to the table to accompany it, but one taste of the dish and I immediately understood why. Meaty yet light, it was the perfect combination for a soft red.
In short: I’m served a spectacle. The scallop starter is divine,
The banana dessert was brought for the finish - an unusual combination of banana cake, panna cotta, peanut brittle, toffee elements and a small milkshake. I left satisfied and merry - exactly what all good meals should do. Grow40 is at 40 Kensington Gardens, Brighton, BN1 4AL. Tel: 01273 622519
BISON BEER A quart of ale and a meal for a king BY NAMMIE MATTHEWS If Brighton as a whole is to be said to love anything (except perhaps coffee), it’s probably got to be craft beer. In a city that reputedly boasts more public houses per capita than any other city in the UK, it’s no surprise that a place such as Bison Beer would do so well. It started as a bottle shop and crafthouse in East Street, selling cans with colourful labels and a wall of draught taps, with which patrons are invited to use to fill up their growlers (settle down, you at the back) to take to the beach. Then came the bar in Church Road, Hove, last year - the perfect place to pull up a bar stool, drink a can of the fancy stuff and people-watch from the decking in the lateafternoon or evening, But now the Bison team are adding another string to their
bow, after bringing craft beer to the beach and the bar. Their new spot - at the ‘cursed’ 103 North Road (previously home to 1847) - brings the duo’s ethos to a larger spot, complete with a kitchen run by one of the most promising pop ups in town: Humble Plates. Head chef Dan cut his teeth working at Michelin Guidepipped Market restaurant, and is the perfect fit for a partnership which exudes ambition like this. The menu is set to include South Indian mussels, pork belly and honey miso paneer - among many other bar snacks - which pair flawlessly with the multitude of beers Bison have on offer. It might just be the most exciting opening of the summer. Bison X Humble Plates is at 103 North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YW.

SEMOLINA Celebrating Sussex BY ANYA ZERVUDACHI I have been wanting to check out Semolina since it opened over two years ago but due to the restaurant’s well earned popularity (and my disorganised Brightonian trait of never booking a table until it’s too late), this month marked my inaugural visit to the little restaurant just off London Road. Neatly tucked away on Baker Street - which I had anticipated being a much longer walk than the 10-15 minute stroll from St Anns Well Gardens - our expectations for Semolina were extremely high as the restaurant came recommended by many well trusted sources. For those who take note of TripAdvisor ratings, it also sits firmly in Brightons Top 20 on the site, ranking 14th of over 900 restaurants with a full 5 out of 5 - meaning that before I even arrived I knew they had to be doing something right. We were greeted warmly as we entered by Linda, one half of the husband-and-wife team that own and run the restaurant. We were shown our seats, and then she proceeded to take the time to talk us through the seasonal, monthly changing menu, offering recommendations as she went. We were told that everything from the bread to desserts and ice creams are made in house, which made our decision to kick off with my favourite Nocellara green olives and some of the ‘bread of the day’, which comprised mini milk and poppy seed loaves served with a deeply golden and full-flavoured olive oil and delicious truffled butter. We decided to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner cocktail to accompany our nibbles. I opted for the ‘Cocktail Of The Month’ - a melontini - which was a refreshing combination of Blackdown vodka, watermelon, cucumber, mint and lemon. Natalie meanwhile went for a Passion Bellini Prosecco mixed with St. Germain and passionfruit purée. In my opinion the menu is perfect: not too overwhelming with five carefully put-together starters and five mains offering options for vegetarians, pescatarians and meat lovers. Unusually both Natalie and I ended up going for two fish courses - I decided on squid to start and brill to follow, while Natalie went for the trout salad followed by wild bass.
Our starters arrived shortly after we’d polished off our bread and olives. My squid was perfectly tender, pan fried with salty bites of pancetta, bright green broad beans with a light Gremolata dressing. I managed to steal a mouthful of Natalie’s cured trout and crab salad which was served with thin shavings of radish, cucumber and grapefruit segments and was the ideal starter - light, fresh and well balanced. As for my main - I have struggled to stop thinking about it in the week since my visit, and am almost salivating at the thought, writing this review. The brill was perfectly cooked, the white fish flaking apart beautifully served with the most incredibly sumptuous buttery sauce with homemade herb gnocchi and minted peas. The dish was incredible, and paired wonderfully with my cold crisp glass of Pasquiers Sauvignon which really cut through the richness of the decadent sauce. Natalie was equally delighted with her bass, served with a hand made crab raviolo, braised fennel and topped of with one of our favourite sea vegetables - samphire. Despite the two courses being generously sized, I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving without trying one of the tempting selection of desserts. We decided to share the apricot frangipane tart served with pistachio ice cream, which we enjoyed with a glass of Monbazillac and an espresso - my favourite way to end any meal. I must have told at least ten or more people about this meal in the week since my visit, it truly is a hidden gem and is absolutely one of my new favourites. To conclude, I should note the meal came to under the £100 mark including the nibbles, three courses, cocktails, wine, dessert wine and coffee. What a steal. Semolina is at 15 Baker Street, Brighton, BN1 4JN. Tel: 01273 697259
BRIGHTON CEREAL CAFE Feeling loopy BY ROSE WILLIAMSON
Residing in a basement on Trafalgar St, Brighton Cereal Café is putting a new spin on a breakfast standard. When we headed to their opening night, we were perhaps a little apprehensive about how the concept might play out in real life. Even though we arrived 15 minutes after opening, we were lucky to get a seat. It’s a small venue, maybe twenty covers, but it feels homely rather than cramped. The early 00s Beano Annuals, VHS tapes and crayons were a nice touch, though a troubling reminder that the features of my childhood have turned in to decorative suggestions of an era.
Blinded by Cap’n’s and Froot Loops, Puffs and Pebbles, it was hard to make a confident decision. Eventually we decided on Lion Bar Clusters with oat milk and unicorn charms with frosting and custard milk. While enjoyable, the British palate might be inclined to call them a dessert instead of breakfast. One of the owners brought over Lucky Charm flavoured ice cream after we’d finished. It was great, particularly because I felt it was honest about its pudding-based place in the world.

The guys running the place were friendly and efficient, no small feat for an opening morning. Opening a cereal cafe is not for the faint-hearted. If you’re new to the concept, selling sugary goods might seem an unconfrontational pursuit, but a similar cafe came under fire for selling cereal by the bowl. It’s unfair to target one establishment for wider issues within cafe culture. If people are willing to pay £10+ for incarnations of eggs and bread, I don’t think £3-4 is too much to ask for an imported product with a choice of ten milks. Brighton Cereal Cafe is a great spot for kids, city visitors and nostalgic evenings with friends. While it might not be an everyday kind of place - scribbling on tables and walls, while eating brightly coloured cereal covered in frosting, is everything my six-year-old-self dreamed adulthood could be. BOHO GELATO Ice, ice, baby BY ANYA ZERVUDACHI As May comes round each year, I understand again why I make the compromise of the six month long English winter: because living in Brighton over the summer months is a dream. It also means I’m perpetually on the hunt for some ice cream; just as well we have plenty of vendors across town. I have loved Boho Gelato, who lead the way in artisan Italian ice cream, since they opened in Pool Valley a good eight or so years ago, but this month marked my first visit to the ‘not so new any more’ second store on Ship Street. As someone who struggles with decisions when it comes to food or drink, places like Boho are a struggle as there are so many unique an exotic flavours - I just want to try everything. The Ship Street store has 12 daily flavours including some delicious vegan options to choose from - a struggle for me but less testing than the enormous offering at the Pool Valley branch, which boasts 24 daily flavours.
Luckily, it’s a quiet day and they’re very generous, letting me sample a good three or four of the flavours before I commit to one scoop of the good stuff. I finally decided on the adventurous Lavender Creme Brûlée, which was deliciously creamy, striped with sweet caramel with a distinctive floral note which balanced my perfectly-formed scoop. My partner Natalie, who had joined me in the experience, opted for the equally unusual Carrot Cake, which was packed with the rich characteristic notes of spice that you would associate with a slice of the real stuff, the creamy gelato playng the part of cream cheese topping. The experience was perfect for a blissfully sunny day, and the ideal treat post-cycling before we headed to the beach - it certainly won’t be our last. Boho Gelato is at 31 Ship Street and 6 Pool Valley, Brighton. Tel: 01273 727205.
THE NUTRITIONIST
www.levelupnutrition.co.uk Facebook: @levelupnutritionuk Instagram: @level.up.nutrition
Trained dietitian Jess English shares her tips on how to survive the season’s inevitable hangover... It’s festival season again (whoop!) and at some point this time of year I am inevitably asked some variant of: “...how do I survive a festival, sans hangover - without feeling too bloated / horrible / hungover ...and seeing the inside of a steamy portaloo door for way too long?” I’ve done a LOT of festival seasons over the years and have combined my experience with a few nutritional nuggets that should see you through in one muddy piece.
bananas, oatcakes, tinned fruit, tinned tuna or mackerel, trail mix, crisps, granola bars, granola, rice cakes, UHT milk / plant milk and even veg and dips like hummus and guac if you have a decent coolbox. This will not only save mega-££ but you’ll also be keeping up your vitamin, mineral, protein and fibre intake which can help to keep you feeling tip top.
EATING ISN’T CHEATING
No buzzkills here, but (amongst many other things) food helps to nourish us and keep our energy levels stable. This includes when drinking all day at a fezzie. Try to eat at least every 3-4 hours to keep your energy levels up for an evening of boogie-ing.
AVOIDING PORTA-HELL
Eating more high-fat foods, eating at weird times, drinking more than usual, not getting enough sleep, falling out with your mates after living together in muddy tents for 4 days - all of these things can play havoc with your gut. By all means try out the weird and wonderful foods that are on offer but if you know you can suffer with a dodgy tummy and don’t want it to ruin your weekend - planning ahead, eating regularly, drinking enough water and sticking to familiar foods can all help.
HANGOVER CENTRAL
Look, I’ll level with you - if you’re planning on getting battered every night and hoping I’m about to tell you that if you just take these vitamin pills or that super smoothie then you’ll be right as rain every day ...that ain’t going to happen. There is no proven hangover cure - sorry! Avoiding it in the first place is usually a winner though and definitely avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Eating a meal containing carbohydrates and fat before or during drinking can also help to slow the absorption of alcohol. Alternating boozy drinks with soft drinks or water can help to stave off dehydration and headaches, though it’s worth bearing in mind that having lots of sugary drinks might leave you feeling a bit sluggish after a while.
PLAN AHEAD
When you’re loading up on your cans at the shops on the way, have a think about packing in some non-perishables and ‘portable’ fruit. Why not try: Apples, tangerines,
KEEP MOVING
Even though it can seem appealing to stay sat in your camp chair all day, keeping moving not only contributes to keeping you, ahem, regular - but should help to keep the aches and pains away from those deflated airbed nights. Why not see if there’s a free yoga session available on site, if not then you could check out this li’l five minute wake-up workout from NHS Choices.
CATCHING SOME ZZZ’S
Snoring, indigestion, music, someone weeing on your tent - festivals aren’t the most conducive to a night of quality shut-eye. However, we must all know by now that sleep is super-important; it can affect our mood, energy levels (duh), appetite... the list goes on. Being realistic here, I’m not suggesting that you try to get your 8 hours in every night at a festival but I would say that it’s worth packing a few extras so you get a few hours of better quality sleep: earplugs and an eye mask are gamechangers.
