July thrusts its dark and rainy pelvis into our faces again. During the intermittent periods of agreeable weather nearly a million visitors will travel to the seaside, for the age-old ceremony of decorating the streets and pebbles with thousands of brightly coloured sacrificial offerings, like drink cans, plastic bags and fag butts, in homage to the Sun God. Seriously though, if the bin strike has taught us anything, it’s that much of what we discard needs to be recycled, or disposed of properly. It’s just up to us to evaluate if having a cleaner city is worth a little inconvenience. IMMODESTY BLAIZE - PAGE 24

It’s July and the summer’s finally here, along with the weird and wonderful experiences this month brings. As you’ve come to expect, we’re bringing you a magazine full of where we’ve been and where we’re going to be at.

Mobile shopping innovator Shopitize has released an app which enables meaningful interactions with key brands. Shoppers use their smartphone cameras to scan the barcodes of goods featured in the mobile rewards service, photograph their shopping receipts and then claim their rewards. The new app (on iOS and Android) is free to download and packed with content, including interesting surveys, great recipes, and curious facts that enrich the shopping experience, as well as exclusive offers. Kellogg, United Biscuits, Aunt Bessie’s, Yeo Valley, Danone, Kerry Foods and Jus-Rol are just some of the products signed up for the service.

We’ll be getting fashion-forward by looking at this year’s Brighton Fashion Week, and get suited and booted at the city’s shiny new Dr Martens store. In case you’re looking for something better to do than sitting watching Big Bother in a vegetative state, we’ve interviews with Immodesty Blaize and Ruby Lux to inspire you to catch them when they visit Brighton soon. We’re looking at the daddy of all city events - Brighton Pride, and an account of our luscious visit to Mr Daly’s traditional Pie and Mash shop (served with authentic ‘cockney’ liquor!)

We certainly hope you’ll be joining us at Paddle Round The Pier this year. The world’s biggest free beach and watersports festival comes to Hove Lawns on Sat 6 – Sun 7 July. We were thinking of making a watercraft for the Paddle from all the discarded cans and bottles left in the City Centre last month, but someone came swept away our supply. Maybe next year…

If this wasn’t enough to make you want to get off the sofa and wade through some litter in search of entertainment, then we’ve got our Theatre guide, Comedy round-up and the usual generous helpings of the most comprehensive listings in Brighton. Weary clubbers might be getting spun out by the arrival of the London to Brighton Night Ride in the wee hours of Sun 14 July. Over 5000 riders will be setting off from Clapham Common, after 11.00pm on Sat 13 July, to ride the 60 miles to the coast, in this nocturnal twist on British Heart Foundation’s world famous event.

With the arrival of summer, thoughts are turning to the most inescapable of all Brighton events: Brighton Pride. Celebrating every aspect of the city’s diverse LGBT community, this massive event starts with a parade through the city, and then takes over Preston Park on Sat 3 Aug for the mother of all parties. The theme for this year’s Brighton Pride has been announced as “Gay Icons” enabling participants to draw inspiration from the vast array of Iconic LGBT figureheads, campaigners and popular celebrities that have shaped and advanced LGBT culture and the cause of equality throughout history. www.brighton-pride.org

British electronic giants Faithless have just been added to the SGP line-up. Best known for their chart-smashing, dancefloor destroying singles: Insomnia and God Is a DJ, the band supposedly split up a few years back. But you can’t keep some ravers down, so now they’re back to put the party into Secret Garden Party. The trio will join the likes of Soulwax, The Strypes, Bastille, Regina Spektor, Django Django and Youth Lagoon, plus the trademark SGP off-the-wall entertainment, at this consistently brilliant Cambridgeshire festival on Fri 25 – Sat 28 July. www.secretgardenparty.com

Since picking up a guitar at the tender age of two this acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and singer has slid effortlessly between jazz, blues, folk and psychedelia. But three ground-breaking albums later he decided to never make another solo record, instead becoming one of the best session players in the world, refusing an offer to join the Rolling Stones’ touring lineup along the way. Now, with the recent re-release of his seminal Inspiration Information album, he’s hitting the road again, giving Brightonian’s a rare chance to catch this much-overlooked prodigy.

The skies above Stanmer Park will be ablaze with colour on Sat 13 – Sun 14 July, at the Brighton Kite Festival. There’s some amazing displays planned, including world class flyers of all forms of kites, from beautifully made miniature single-line kites through to the best team displays you will ever see. Some of the attractions at this spectacular free event include the now traditional Martin Lester Spirit kite fly, an Eddy shaped kite fly of all sizes, both Indian and Rokkaku kite fighting, kites made in the children’s workshop, plus some of the world’s best sport kite flyers.

This group of well-meaning punk-folkies from Plymouth have built a fair sized audience for their positive social conscious music. Garnering influences as diverse as Woody Guthrie, The Clash and Bruce Springsteen into something this good takes time and dedication and the guys have pulled it off with aplomb across the two albums so far released with hopefully a new one coming soon.

MS MR P.I.L - JOHN LYDON

This great Canadian singer-songwriter brings some much needed soul to the punk rock show and, as is evident on his eighth album Truth Be Sold, makes a pretty unique sound for this generation of music lovers. Think early Iggy and The Stooges, fuzzy guitars, bluesy horn play and just solid roots music played from the heart. This show captures Leeroy mid-tour and properly warmed up so promises to be some show for those lucky enough to gain access to the tiny Albert venue.

Yet more blazing punk rock from California, this time however of a completely different vintage. Trash Talk formed in 2005 and have been widely hailed as the leaders of a new scene emanating out of southern California. They rage hard, they play fast and furious and they play with a relentlessness that is unequalled amongst their peers. This should be some show if it lives up to the material released on the UK-only Shame compilation, released here by Hassle! They will also doubtless be playing songs off their newish 119 album, released towards the end of last year on the hip-hop dominated Odd Future Records.

One of the most talked about bands of the year are coming to Brighton. New York electro-duo MS MR (pronounced Miss Mister) are one of our hot tips for 2013, but don’t just take our word for it, the likes of Usher and Jay Z are also big fans. Formed last year when colourfully coiffed husky vocalist Lizzy Plapinger joined forces with production whiz Max Hershenow, their EP ‘Candy Bar Creep Show’ contained 4 hook-laden tracks including the Lana Del Rey-esque ‘Bones’ and ‘Hurricane’ that suggested there was something special going on. With their alluring debut album ‘Secondhand Rapture’ building on that initial promise, it will be interesting to see what they’re like live.

Brighton legends come together to celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary of sticking it to the man through their folk-punk sound and incendiary political fury. Over the years they have had their fair share of fame, their fair share of loathing from the hip music press but none of that has stopped them continuing on their path. This show, which doubtless will feature all the hits as well as some of their newer material, is sure to see a huge number of old faces descending on our city to relive the glory days of crust.

They seem to like it here and I seem to be writing a new preview of yet another show by them every month so I’ll keep this one short. Killer old-school indie rock played with a passion and enthusiasm rarely seen. If you haven’t already, go see them now!

BN1 CHATS WITH...

RUBYLUX Brighton-based four-piece Rubylux began by playing free gigs outside the Churchill Centre. Now, they’re big in Vietnam and about to release their highly anticipated second album. To find out more, BN1’s Gary Marlowe caught up with the band onboard the Brighton Wheel. For those who don’t know you, how long have you been together and would you describe your music? We started about six years ago. We all went to music colleges in Brighton. We came together from two different bands. Here in Brighton we’re probably best known for the street gigs we’ve done. Our first gig, in fact our first rehearsal, was outside Churchill Square! We’d just set up and play to as many people as we could on a Saturday afternoon. Back then, we only had three songs, so we’d mainly play covers. So how did you progress from doing those impromptu street gigs to more formal shows? We eventually earned enough money selling CDs to buy ourselves a van so we could travel round the country doing street gigs. People would video us and put it up on YouTube so more people would discover us. And, amazingly, through that, somebody in Vietnam who ran the Hard Rock Cafe, saw us playing an invited us out there for a month. We got there not knowing what to expect, and we were astonished that people even knew the words to our songs! So you’re big in Vietnam? We are. They even extended our stay to just over two months! And whilst we were there we managed to hop over to Singapore, Thailand and Australia. All that on the back of a street gig outside Churchill Square! What’s more, it was because of those gigs that we were able to fund the recording of our first record. Where did you record that? We did it in France. In fact we spent six months recording there with James Sanger. We lived on bread and cheese, but we made an album. I guess it shows you need to make your own luck... We had a song on the first album called Screaming Surrender which has been used on adverts all across Europe. We also have another song on the new album that we think is going to be used on a film soundtrack. Some of it is of course down to luck, but we do have a publishing deal with BMG and that definitely helps. We find that if the music gets used somewhere, there’ll be a sudden spike in our YouTube hits. That must also help you in deciding where to play? It does. Germany’s a good example. We’ve toured there a few times now and built up a good fan-base.

Why do you think you’re popular in Germany? Whenever we’ve played there, it’s been really well-received, much more even than an English crowd. We get great response here, but over there the difference is really noticeable. We supported a band who in turn had supported 30 Seconds To Mars who themselves had just supported Muse, so through that we gained a lot of Muse fans. In Germany, despite it being such a huge country, we even see the same faces at gigs. The Germans just love live music, they go crazy for it. In fact, live music there is a bigger industry than it is in the UK. What were your musical influences when you got together? Were you listening to same bands? Individually, we all like very different bands, but collectively we all love stadium rock bands like Killers and Coldplay. The common thread between us all however is the Beatles. What do you think it is about Brighton that attracts so many musicians? Even though only one of us was born here, the whole band was re-born in Brighton! What attracted us here was the music scene. Everyone it seems is an artist or a musician and everyone’s trying to make it. You can’t walk around without seeing someone with a guitar on their back. It seems like a natural gathering place. There’s also a lot of places to play down here and, over the years, we’ve probably played most of them! We don’t do that many Brighton gigs nowadays, but we try and play Concorde 2 once a year. Apart from the music scene, what else do you like about Brighton?

“

It’s London by the sea. I guess we like its quirkiness. It’s a place where everyone does their own thing. No one judges you down here and they have vegetarian restaurants! It’s also got lots of pubs! More than anything though, it’s such a vibrant city. Every day there’s something going on.

“

Tell us about the new new record... It’s our first real album. It’s the first that will have a physical release. We made ‘Fake Control’ two years ago and that was us experimenting with different things trying to find our sound. This time we recorded it all in bedrooms and it was only when we were eight songs in did we realise we’d got an album. We didn’t go into a studio for quite a while. We recorded the drums in a studio in Arundel, before mixing the album in a studio up in North Wales.

Presumably, the fact you recorded much of it in various bedrooms is because the technology today allows you to do that? Absolutely. Pro recording equipment is now a lot more accessible and a lot more portable. It’s much easier now, for example, to turn a single violin into an orchestra. We should also add we all studied music production at college, so we have a slight edge in that area. With the exception of two tracks which we co-produced, this album was entirely self-produced. So, when it comes to deciding the finished song, who has the final say? We all do! Luckily, the four of us do agree on most things. It sounds a very democratic process. But what about the songwriting itself, is that the same? No. Rob writes the songs. He writes the chords and we all get involved in changing the arrangements. Being in a band you have your lives planned out for you for months into the future. How far ahead is it for you? It’s right to the end of 2013. We just signed to ITB, a major booking agency, and they’re putting together dates for us. For us, that’s really stepping up a level. So what’s next for Rubylux? Later in the year we’ll be doing a headline tour, but before that we’ll be going out on a support tour. Explain how you approach a support tour compared with headlining your own gig... We kind of like the challenge. A couple of weeks ago we played Shepherds Bush Empire supporting Rick Springfield, a gig that came about through a promoter in London. They’d known us for a few years and were looking for an opening act. We only had 35 minutes, but we came on stage very dry and came off very wet! Do you think that experience of those street gigs helps in that situation? Definitely. It helped us understand how to tailor our set. We know what songs draw a crowd. We certainly picked our

rockier ones for that show. Even today, if we’ve got enough time we’ll try and do a street gig wherever we are. The other day we played Rockness, so we also played a street gig in Inverness. In these tough economic times, how does a band like Rubylux finance itself being on the road? We’ve been lucky in that regard. Quite early on we started working with a private investment company. They’re not a record label, but they helped fund the album. In fact, through them we’ve set up our own label which is being distributed by Universal. What about touring? Is that lucrative for you? We break even now, but in the past we’ve taken a van across Europe driving night and day to get to gigs, with five or six of us staying in hostels. So, yes, like lots of bands, we’ve been on the road with next to no budget. How else do you generate revenue? We do look at everything like a business. We have a VIP fan club that pay a yearly subscription and we do a lot of special things for them, like hearing songs first, that sort of thing. We also have a line of merchandise and have developed a strong brand image. We don’t give our music away for free, but anyone who wants to hear us only has to go to YouTube. What’s important now is being able to charge people for the experiences that they can’t get for nothing, like a live show. That’s why for us the most important thing is being a great live band. Looking ahead, what ambitions do you have for Rubylux a year or two down the road? We want to take it as big as we possibly can! POPUP OPERA Opera is brought to the masses on Thu 18 July, as Diplocks Market on North Road plays host to Pergolesi’s classic comic pieces: Rita and La Serva Padrona. Existing to make opera entertaining, Pop-Up Opera present this ingenious new production, of two one-act operas, both performed in their native language and taking place on the same stage, cleverly intertwining their scenes and stories. One mute servant features in both, tying the two tales together and guiding us through these comedies. Commotion arises when the dominating titular Rita and her timid husband Beppe receive an unexpected visit from Rita’s first husband Gaspar. Each believes the other to have died and Gaspar unknowingly arrives seeking Rita’s death certificate so he can remarry. Beppe sees this as an opportunity to escape his marriage, as Gaspar is still legally Rita’s husband. The two men agree to a game – the winner will have to stay with Rita. Each of them tries to lose, but Gaspar cunningly manipulates Rita and Beppe to fall in love again. Meanwhile, in La Serva Padrona, wealthy old bachelor Uberto is kept under the thumb of his maid Serpina. He enlists his manservant Vespone to help him find a wife and get rid of Serpina but she convinces Vespone to trick Uberto into marrying her. Their elaborate plan works and by the time Uberto has agreed to marry Serpina he realises he had loved her all along. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll certainly be astounded by the calibre of this innovative company. Pop-Up’s operas are skilfully adapted to each individual venue, but always maintain the highest standards. The combination of unusual and intimate venues, along with informal and engaging productions, offers a greater connection to the singers and the music, something even seasoned opera-goers often miss. www.popupopera.co.uk

The North Laine is hosting Shebeen, a new street food festival, on 11 - 13 July. This celebration of Brighton’s mixed cultural identity takes place at Diplocks Farm Market, on North Road bringing a vast array of food styles from Brighton’s best independent street food traders. Shebeen takes its name from the illicit South African bar that provided a platform for communities, musicians and artists to unify their voice in a time of that country’s great political turmoil. By bringing these communities together, they promoted all that was good and understated about their culture, ultimately bringing change to the face of Africa. The concept of Shebeen, the bringing together of independent music, art, food and drink into a place that benefits the respective communities, is the basis of Shebeen UK. So far, Shebeen has facilitated events in areas of Manchester that are in need of economic and social invigoration, raising money for local social clubs and helping to strengthen local identity. The Brighton event will see a diverse range of Brighton-based street food sellers, from Trolls Pantry’s burgers to Iranian street food. Also there will be other market stalls, including butchers, fishmongers, pesto and oils and health supplements. Juke Joint Bar will be in attendance to quench any thirsts. This grassroots pop-up bar uses a bespoke draft beer dispense system that requires no electricity to run, enabling a beer festival to be set up just about anywhere. With bars built from the pallets that the beers arrive on, lighting features made from the internals of old disposable beer kegs and furniture from old casks, Juke Joint pride themselves on the reutilisation of old brewery related throwaways. They’ll be selling a wide range of craft beers from all over the country, plus Ross-On-Wye cider and perry’s with DJ’s and live music all weekend.

BRIGHTON PRIDE SATURDAY 3 AUGUST PRESTON PARK TICKETS ON SALE NOW This year’s Pride is just weeks away. As well as the main parade and party in the park on Saturday 3 August, there are plenty of events throughout July to get you in the mood for the big day. The park itself features an ever-expanding list of top talent. Recently added to the line-up is multi-awardwinning R&B artist Ms Dynamite. Record producer and rapper as well as recording artist Ms Dynamite has won the Mercury Music Prize, two Brit Awards and three MOBOs. Dulcie Danger from Brighton Pride said: “She’s undoubtedly one of the UK’s foremost queens of Hip-hop and R&B, she’s certainly iconic and her appearance is getting tongues wagging across the UK about Brighton Pride this year.” Ms Dynamite joins a line-up that features a plethora of modern-day divas on the main stage, including Paloma Faith, girl band Stooshie and lesbian icon Alison Moyet. On the Women’s Performance Stage, meanwhile, you can catch such acts as former X-Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan and legendary singer-songwriter Horse. Also on the main stage will be top boyband Class A, six lovely lads from London who have been wowing audiences in gay clubs across the country with their vocals, dancing (and the fact they’re a devilishly handsome bunch to boot). Speaking of dancing, the Wild Fruit dance big top has also secured some big names behind the decks, including Freemasons. Among the new additions for this year is a brand new Bears’ zone, open air and overlooking the park festivities, with a hog roast, Bear bar, picnic and “Bears in the Woods” section and a host of DJs for plenty of Bear fun. As well as all the park fun there are plenty of activities going on throughout July. From the middle of the month the Arts Festival promises a range of cultural highlights, including performances from the Gay Men’s Chorus. Called Taken From Behind (The

Scenes) this show on the 19 - 20 July offers the chance to discover what goes on backstage – who murders a song and who steals the show? At the film festival there’s a chance to see such movies as I Am Divine, Female Trouble, Bette Bourne: It Goes With The Shoes and The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, serving as a reminder of the true meaning behind Pride. A Gay Icons Art Exhibition runs throughout July at Brighton Library, featuring many artists including Mark Vessey, Billy Chainsaw and Kitty Finegan. It wouldn’t be Brighton without Doggy Pride, of course, which takes place on 28th July at Hove RFC and features a doggy fashion show, lots of stalls and multiple prizes for proud pooches. Other highlights including walking Pride tours and folky musical performance from The Silver Swans, plus a Pop Icons of the 20th Century exhibition by celebrated artist Lez at Koba on Western Road. Of course, there is much more happening at Pride than can be fitted into one article. In preparation for a run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Diane Spencer comes down to Komedia, on Sun 7 July, with new show: Hurricane Diane. There’s something faintly fascinating about her boundless sense of wonderment at all the visceral anecdotes her life throws up. Let her toss in a few well-timed and poignant throwaway lines and you realise why she won the Chortle Newcomer Award a couple of years ago. Nearly every review seems to make a reference to her appearance, but her sweet and innocent looks only serve to weaken your defences to her gleeful campaign of bad taste.

Christian Reilly presents a preview of his Edinburgh show: Songs Of Praise, on Thu 11 Jul at Komedia, Singing songs to heal the world and fix the economy, this Perrier/Chortle-awarded musical comedian takes a look at Dolly Parton on papal infallibility, Muse on artistic integrity, Elton John on reproduction and Jay-Z on food labelling. Exposing: zombie sex-pests, class warfare, and being chatted up by your maths teacher. This enormously charismatic performer has simple solutions to modern society’s problems. Rather than getting into politics, he’s written some insanely catchy tunes to get his point across. Expect big things in the future.

After taking audiences on n intimate tour of his family history, Paddy Lennox has returned to telling tall stories to delight the crowds in his new Edinburgh Fringe show, which previews at Komedia on Tues 9 July. An instantly likeable stand-up, (Why is it every Irish comedian is instantly likeable? Just for once couldn’t we get one that’s an arse?) Mr Lennox will have the room at ease within 10 seconds of walking on stage, then eating out of his hand in five minutes. He’s got some splendid stories to tell, with just enough offcolour comments popped in to keep you on your toes.

A double header for Upstairs at Three and Ten on Weds 10 Jul, as Sara Pascoe locks horns with Aisling Bea. Despite appearing in Live at The Apollo, Stand Up for the Week and Twenty Twelve, Sara cannot be absolutely sure that she exists. Seemingly bursting with ideas, she’s always a joy to watch, no matter how ridiculous she reveals herself to be. C’est le Bea, the highly anticipated debut stand-up show from the winner of So You Think You’re Funny? 2012, is full of tales about life, death, hip-hop, raving and riding. Two fabulous comics, one perfectly formed venue.

IMMODESTY Since being crowned Reigning Queen of Burlesque at the Las Vegas Burlesque Hall of Fame in 2007, Immodesty Blaize has secured her position as arguably the greatest Burlesque performer on Earth.

It’s true, my costumes are not designed for comfort. There are a few hazards, ribbruising, busk chafe, corset string burns, wrist sprain, breathing restriction... But that’s showbiz and we love it.

Best known for her employment of outrageous over-sized props and torsoconstricting corsets for her act, she has performed to packed houses across the planet, encouraging music artists Goldfrapp, Marc Almond, James Brown, Roxy Music and Nick Cave to enlist her show-stopping talents.

You’re part of a wave of performers that pushed Burlesque back into the British psyche. Now it seems the art-form is ever-growing in popularity. How do you account for this?

A novelist, social commentator and film producer, she’s worked tirelessly to bring her art to the mainstream. No one else has done more to force Burlesque into the conciseness of the public. We spoke to her, ahead of her very special show at Emporium on Fri 2 Aug, hoping that just a little bit of glamour would rub off on us. BN1: How does an aspiring performer go about choosing the perfect Burlesque moniker? IM: I didn’t choose my name, it chose me – so I’m no expert on names. Though I’m convinced there’s an unspoken system like…take your favourite animal followed by the nickname your first love ever gave you. This would give you Foxy Mufflinks or Kitty Sweetcheeks for example. Or pop in a colour for good measure like Scarlett, Rouge, Noir, Rose, Cherry… voila! Where do you source your incredible stage outfits? I work with some amazing couturiers, such as Ian Wallace who recently made the costumes for Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. I usually have a design that I’ve drawn to begin the process. I also like to give good hat in my shows, so I work with milliners like Stephen Jones OBE and Noel Stewart. What can you tell us about suffering for your art? Some of your costumes seem a bit restrictive.

A combination of things… Audiences grow because people want escapism now, much like burlesque became popular in the wake of the depression of 1930s; the world can be a depressing place in these modern times. Audiences also like the comedy and humour they love a spectacle and the glamour. Aspiring performers are also drawn to the vintage sensibility as there’s an element of wanting to recapture a past seen through rose tinted retro-spectacles. It’s also easier for them to get stage space now, as the genre has become more widely known and accepted in venues and theatres finally. I think crowds enjoy the live experience once again after years of TV and Cinema dominating. Cabaret and Burlesque is fun, it’s entertainment, it pokes fun at the times, it unites people, I’m glad it is enjoying this wave of popularity. What’s your favourite type of music to dance to? Live music! A live band instantly lifts my mood on stage. I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing names in music over the years. If there’s a beat, I can dance to it; Swing, Jazz, Big Band, Modern Electronica, anything vampy. Music is so important in my shows and I devote a lot of time to it! What provides you with inspiration for your routines? I’m an Art geek, so all kinds of Art, Cinema, Music, Literature, and travel… sometimes the oddest things will spark an idea. I love exploring and travelling. There’s a world of raw material out there to make something truly fabulous and unique.

How often do you crash your baggage allowance when you fly Every time without fail. I hope one day soon, someone will invent the TARDIS Suitcase. Does Burlesque provide good rolemodels in a culture so obsessed by bodyimage, or is that not what it’s here for? Burlesque is here to entertain and provide glamorous, titillating, humorous escapism; it’s theatre first and foremost. But my fans also feel they can communicate with me, and I’ve often had very poignant fanmail from girls either with eating disorders, or confidence obstacles, who find some comfort in the fact I’ve been fearless about performing on stage and showing my body as a non size zero. These women and girls keep me motivated in always spreading the message of diversity and self-acceptance. Burlesque occasionally gets accused of representing women as mere objects, as it draws attention to their sexuality. Is this a misconception, or is it more complicated? It’s just an ill-considered cheap-shot. The whole point of Burlesque is having a highly developed extravagant persona and character, being individual and unique. This is the exact opposite of objectification, which sees someone as a thing, interchangeable, or owned by someone else. In fact Burlesque is one of the few performance genres which breaks the fourth wall – how can we be objects if we communicate (verbally or not) directly with our audience? I’ve yet to hear the same hype about objectification directed at the modelling industry (using women as walking mannequins displaying clothes) nor other performers who use their bodies such as actors, dancers and circus performers. To also try to shame us for using sensuality as part of our performance is hypocritical given that the same rule is not applied to actors simulating sex scenes in mainstream films, or classical art that depicts nudity, or nudity within

BLAIZE ballet. We are sensual and sexual beings, it’s in all of us, it’s how we came to be here, it’s essential to life. I believe it’s unhealthy to try to repress that reality or resent those who acknowledge it. It’s my choice, not obligation, to present a sensual persona within my performance, and it’s the audience’s choice to buy a ticket or not…and my shows always sell out. Most interestingly I’ve occasionally noticed over the years that certain people find it easier to accept sexuality when it’s presented as gritty, edgy or intellectualised, yet perversely find sexuality much more confrontational when it’s presented with unabashed glamour, smiles, celebration and incredible costume! Well, I say ever onwards; as in history, ballet was originally scandalised as a genre for being ‘vulgar’ so it’s not the first time a form of entertainment has suffered from judgement. Though I think if one wants to take the moral high-ground, at least come up with a more intelligent premise. What’s the strangest presentation of Burlesque you’ve seen? The ever inventive and brilliant Fancy Chance, dressed as a David Lynch inspired white rabbit and performing a kind of stocking fetishists dream... It sure took topspot for the most surreal! OK. Dilemma time… You’ve run out of milk. Do you go to the shops in your trackies, or have your tea/coffee black?

What are you most proud of? Well...my name is Immodesty, but I can be modest. So I have many proud achievements in my work, and at times I have to pinch myself, but I never dwell on them as there’s always so much more I want to do. I prefer to think of the humbling moments I’m lucky to experience on my international travels in my job - our world and its people are so incredible it all puts the rhinestones in sparkling perspective! THEATRE GUIDE Plenty of wonderful theatrical treats this month for you, so let’s not waste any time getting stuck into them! Over at Marlborough Theatre is Up 4 a Meet on Tues 16 – Sat 20. Starring X Factor heart-throb, Lloyd Daniels and Big Brother legend Nikki Grahame, it’s a poignant comedy about social media. Over at Emporium this month there’s a series of theatrical events that mix classic movies with interactive performance. Transamerica, on Sun 28, tells the story of Bree, a transsexual woman (Felicity Huffman), who goes on a self-discovery filled road trip with her long-lost son Toby (Kevin Zegers). Connie and Carla, on Sun 21, sees Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette play the titular lifelong friends obsessed with musical theatre. Forced to go on the run, they wind up posing as drag queens and auditioning to host a drag revue at a gay club.

Also at Marlborough Theatre on Sat 13 – Mon 15 is Two Sisters, where dark secrets are reluctantly revealed in this hilarious black comedy. Set in 1880’s Russia, this tale has all the elements to make you laugh, cry and tug your heart-strings in a story of two sisters, a bottle of vodka and a coffin.

The Old Market becomes a shadow puppet universe created from bits of rubbish on Sat 6, when Scamp Theatre & Bunk Puppets present Slapdash Galaxy. DISTRIBUTION AND DEVELOPMENT: STUDIOCANAL By Wayne Imms

Distribution is a vital element of the film industry; the process of getting releases to their audiences, including through promoting and marketing films, and securing venues and other outlets. STUDIOCANAL is one of Europe’s leading distribution companies. Since 1999, it has established a reputation for an innovative approach for distribution. It also plays a part in the development of pioneering and acclaimed filmmaking, working with renowned directors, such as Ben Wheatley, best known for SIGHTSEERS. Brighton-based Dan MacRae is STUDIOCANAL’s Head of Development. Here, he gives us an insight into his work, his passion for film and Brighton’s cinematic potential. Tell me some background on Studio Canal and some notable films that, over the years, it has been behind. The history of the London office where I work is that it was formerly a small independent distributor called Optimum Releasing, which was set up by a guy called Will Clarke. He ran the business with Danny Perkins, who’s currently the CEO of the UK arm of STUDIOCANAL. It started out distributing re-releases of classic titles like The Third Man and Breathless, and gradually progressed to being a dynamic and impactful player on the UK distribution scene releasing titles like THIS IS ENGLAND, PAN’S LABYRINTH, FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and SON OF RAMBOW. When STUDIOCANAL, the Paris-based European studio, decided it wanted to expand its English language production base, it began negotiations with Optimum and ultimately bought the company in 2006, though the Optimum name remained until September 2011. Now the company has offices, and, more crucially, distribution territories, in the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Benelux. So the company retains its core distribution business, but, whereas previously it acquired the bulk of the titles it released, it now develops and finances many of those. Among the titles I’ve been involved in are TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, ATTACK THE BLOCK, SIGHTSEERS, I GIVE IT A YEAR, THE AWAKENING, as well as the forthcoming ALAN PARTIRIDGE: ALPHA PAPA, IN FEAR and CUBAN FURY. What does your role as Head of UK Development specifically entail? Perhaps you can give us an idea of what a usual day for you may include. Head of UK Development is a slightly grand title given that

I work in what is ultimately a smallish department, but working alongside the Head of UK Production and a Development Executive, a lot of what we do is to try and identify material which we believe will find audiences in the UK and in our international territories. So there are two strategies – what will work across the distribution territories I mentioned above, and what makes more sense viewed as a more distinctively UK title (such as SIGHTSEERS – which isn’t to say that film didn’t perform well elsewhere, just that it didn’t fit with the portfolio for those other distribution arms). As we’re financiers, rather than producers, we spend a lot of our working week engaging with the production community and with the other financiers who are developing material, principally the broadcasters (BBC Films and Film4) and with the BFI Film Fund. Additionally, we’re taking meetings with established and emerging talent all the time, to find out what ideas people are brewing and discussing whether or not that could be a good fit for our slate. There is frequently a title or a number of titles in different stages of production – right now there is one title in advanced development, one title has just completed shooting, one title in the editing stages, and two more which have finished editing, but undergoing the final stages of post production, the sound mix, the grade, etc. All of these projects require some kind of daily or at least weekly input, whether it’s watching the rushes, approving cast and crew ideas, viewing the latest cut of signing off on some aspect of the post production process. Ultimately, there are no typical days – next week I’ll spend two days working with a writer to write narration for a film we’re supporting, whereas another week I’ll have been involved in the re-voicing of a foreign language animation title. What did you do before Studio Canal – and describe what films mean to you? And do you have any particular favourite films or a favourite genre? I come from Scotland and spent many years working there on a range of things from Exec-ing short films made by a range of Scottish film makers (Peter Mullan and David Mackenzie being two examples), and running training programmes for emerging Scottish writers and producers. In 2001, I began working at the UK Film Council in the development department and was involved in titles as diverse as RED ROAD, THE PROPOSITION and CREEP. Then I worked for a while at Working Title Films, where I was involved in titles

such as ATONEMENT, HOT FUZZ and SIXTY SIX. As to what films mean to me, I guess they seem to have been part of my life from the earliest age. I remember my father taking me to afternoon packages of Tex Avery and Tom and Jerry cartoons from the earliest age and my first (and most traumatic) memory of a live action film was JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH, when the appearance of a couple of dinosaurs reduced me to a shrieking wreck. Then other memories are of my dad taking me to reruns of classic westerns such as RED RIVER and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. There’s something primal about individual memories I have of all those titles and how they revealed to me a sense that there was a lot more going on in the world and in human interaction than met the eye. A crucial film for me was DON’T LOOK NOW, which I saw when I was 14 and that was a real eye-opener, in terms of a film which told what could be described as a ‘good yarn’, but which hinted at a whole other world out there which couldn’t be understood in an entirely rational way. I’m not remotely religious or even particularly spiritual, but all of my favourite films – DON’T LOOK NOW, THE SHINING, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and DEAD MAN all speak to that sense of otherness and non rationality, and I find those unbelievably thrilling. Is there an especially most enjoyable or satisfying element of your work? It’s just very exciting seeing something come together, whether it’s the script or the film in the editing process, or seeing something being brilliantly realised during the production process. So much of the work involves an element of projecting ahead to the best possible version of an idea and seeing an element or elements of that coming together is always deeply satisfying. And I guess being at the premiere of a film you’ve watched endlessly through a range of permutations and hearing an audience enjoy it – that’s always a pleasure. I understand that you work with some leading upcoming and established filmmaking talent. Are there any that you particularly admire? It’s hard to isolate specific individuals here – but I’ll give Ben Wheatley a thumbs-up, because there’s something genuinely fresh and exciting there and it’s been really interesting watching him move forwards. And I say that as someone who didn’t “get” Down Terrace, which makes me some kind of outcast in the film world!

How aware are you of Brighton’s own filmmaking community, and what would you say may makes it a special place for film? Frankly, I guess I’m only really aware of those in Brighton who are making their mark on the national or international level, whether it’s Ben or John Hillcoat or Howard Overman and the many others down here. I’ve seen some intriguing shorts through the Lighthouse-supported schemes, but as yet not seen those talents move on to feature film, as yet. And I would say Brighton is special, but for all the reasons it’s special to all of us who live there; the sea, the city and the surrounding countryside. But, as with much of the UK, it’s not often presented on screen in a way which brings out its most cinematic qualities. One of my big bugbears about UK filmmaking generally is that not enough is done to re-imagine landscape in a distinctively cinematic manner. I think that Brighton has the sea and therefore the sky, and, as we know from the Western genre, sky is a big part of what makes a landscape feel epic. So when you add in the Downs, and the ability to film characters against that kind of backdrop, with a city within walking distance cradled in a shelter, you’ve got the makings of a location which can become a character in its own right. It’s a well knows anecdote that Keith Waterhouse called Brighton a city helping the police with their enquiries, but that’s a phrase which suggests a city has character. And in a way, films (and novels) locations are present and active as characters in the narrative. Paris is active as a character in Amelie. New York is active as a character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I think Brighton has the potential to be realised in this fashion. Nick Cave and John Hillcoat aimed to do it for Brighton with a project called Death of a Ladies Man, but they couldn’t raise the finance. So it became the novel Death of Bunny Munro instead. But, too often, we see the same shot of characters in the foreground on the seafront with a soft focus image of the Pleasure Pier in the background – it’s almost as much of a cliché as the standard London Eye or Houses of Parliament shots in London movies. So, there’s much to be done to shake that up. What forthcoming releases from Studio Canal should the reader be particularly looking forward to? Definitely ALAN PARTRIDGE: ALPHA PAPA in August and RUSH, the James Hunt / Nicki Lauda story directed by Ron Howard in September. www.studiocanal.co.uk

E L D PAD D N U RO R E I P THE The Paddle Round The Pier Beach festival is back on Sat 6 – Sun 7 July. Held in Brighton since 1996 this popular free event is expected to see visitor numbers of around 50,000 converge onto to Hove Lawns for two days of free exhibitions, have a go sessions, Watersports and beach retail village plus food and drink. Known to be the biggest free charity beach and lifestyle event in the world – “Paddle” has something for the whole family. The event has both serious Paddle and swim races such as the Slip-Stream-Sup 7 & 14 mile Stand up Paddleboard race, and the 10k, 2.5k and 1k open water swims along with the fun stuff like “Paddle Round The Pier” and the crowds favourite; the “Paddle Something Unusual”. There are land and water-borne activities for all ages to try during the whole weekend. The 2013 entertainment stages include: The Main music stage, The kids stage and the increasingly popular Ukulele stage which now sees performers attending from across the UK! Food & drinks will be provided by 10 top restaurants all in close proximity to the main music stage (and this is the only event in the UK where all catering units have to provide a Gluten free dish- So if like the Paddle director Dave Samuel you are gluten or wheat intolerant, then you have it made!) Among some of the new additions to the event for 2013 are “The Bone yard” Dog show, Muscle beach, A Strongman contest and local Watersports photography exhibitions. Shows and demonstrations in the Paddle Village include Urban Athletics Parkour crew, The Animal WD40 Adventure sports tour, and White Crane Fighting arts.

The British BBQ society will be running a national slow cook competition along with running (for the first time at Paddle) a “Hot-Dog-Eating- Contest” on both afternoons – which could be trouble as its right opposite the dog show! This year sees the introduction of the Bagjump – throw yourself off a 10m platform onto a stunt mans airbag beneath. Paddle Round The Pier is all in aid of charity and Paddle has given over £150,000 away in the past few years alone. It’s a free event to enter but organisers do ask for a £1 donation. EASTBOURNE ME E R T X E Eastbourne Extreme, recognised as one of the South Coast’s biggest and most exhilarating FREE extreme sports festivals is returning to the eastern seafront on 13th and 14th July. Eastbourne Extreme will kick off the summer holidays with an adventure filled weekend, combining an exciting mix of Land, Sea and Air based outdoor pursuits. With a fantastic line up of attractions and exhibitors including M.A.D Bike Display, Urban Shadows, JetLev and Extreme Adventure there is certain to be something for every extreme sports fan! The well established M.A.D. Bike Display will be performing some incredible mountain bike stunts. With a team boasting some of Europe’s finest rider’s get ready to be wowed with some extreme entertainment! The Bourne Bombshells, Eastbourne’s local Roller Derby team will return for their second year at Extreme, organising the only free outdoor roller derby tournament in the UK. Expect two days of hard hitting roller derby action with a day tournament consisting of full contact skating. Spray Water Sports will also be making a welcomed appearance with a variety of water based activities including wind surfing, kayaking and body boarding. It’s taken over 50 years, but last month saw the opening of Dr. Martens first flagship store in Brighton. Occupying the former Aubin & Wills shop on Prince Albert Street, this most British of brands will surprise anyone who still thinks DM’s just make ‘Bovver Boots’. Today, the classic boot with its iconic yellow stitching, is just part of a collection of footwear, luggage and clothes. And as well as the traditional blacks and browns, there’s a dazzling array of colours and finishes, from neon pink patent to leopard prints and studded metallic silver! The new store is the British company’s 14th UK flagship and features a contemporary mural by Brighton artist Ben Duarri. BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK Things are looking good for Brighton Fashion Week. The move from All Saints in Hove to the bigger St Bartholomew’s in Brighton, together with the event’s growing reputation as a hotbed for emerging designers, resulted in all three runway shows selling out for the first time. Held over three back-to-back evenings in June, these are the centrepiece of a diverse range of activities that mark BFW13. Having been wowed by last year’s Zeitgeist show, we decided to check out two of this year’s three main shows. For Thursday’s opening night, it seemed like all of Brighton’s fashionistas had congregated at St Bart’s. However, whilst the audience may have been illuminating, the spotlight was always on the catwalk. It has to be said, however, that the lighting this year was a problem, with unsightly shadows being cast on the catwalk from the heads of those in the front row. That aside, the Zeitgeist show was terrific to watch, full of wit and invention. The most memorable coming from Katie Jones’ vibrant Slab City collection with its somewhat disturbing-looking, brightly coloured, graphically crocheted masks. But, just like last year, the best was saved to last. Brighton’s Jess Eaton was the one designer everyone was there to see. A year ago, she stunned the audience with her breathtakingly extravagant Roadkill Couture collection, eye-catching designs incorporating bird feathers. This time round, the big question was “How would she top that?” Well, after a long and suspense-filled wait, the answer was soon apparent: this year’s collection was bigger, bolder and even more inventive. She began with a series of flowing olive green dresses made from army parachute silk and trimmed with her signature feathers. But this year, not content with creating extraordinary costumes, she also turned her models into freakish doll-like mannequins, with stockinged faces adorned with stylised eyes made from sequins and feathers and wearing vibrant candy-floss wigs. Arguably though, the most striking change was her use of colour. Feathers were dyed in shocking pinks, blues and yellows, and her dresses were from a similarly bold palette.

She ended with a collection of designs incorporating antlers. This time, the predominant colours were black, white and olive, the parachute material was mixed with geometric knitted shawls and the feathers were even more elaborate, even more exotic. The finale featured two wraithlike creations, one a flowing meringue with huge antlers, the other, tightly fitted with a long white veil and an extraordinary appendage of gold feathers. With both, one had the sense you were looking at icons from some otherworldly race. But beyond the extravagant designs and bizarre faces, Jess Eaton showed once again that Brighton has one of the world’s most innovative designers, one who is not afraid to push boundaries. The following evening’s show, with all the designs having an eco-focus, was a new addition. Titled Sustain, it featured designers making use of recycled or up-cycled materials. And it was just as good as the night before, possibly even better. And, once again, two designers really stood out.

First among those was young Devonshire designer Rebecca Jayne Taylor. The Falmouth University graduate impressed with her kaleidoscopic collection of exuberant chunky knits and her use of futuristic Gore-Tex materials. With her models wearing goggles and helmets it was like a colourful alien race of space travellers had descended from the skies. Equally colourful was the collection by the other standout designer, Portsmouth’s Dumpster Design. With invented creations fashioned entirely from magazines, Daisy Harris-Burland’s designs were about as eco-friendly as you can get. So, based on what we saw, BFW13 was full of colour, brimming with original ideas and packed with people. It will be a tough act to follow. BY GARY MARLOWE

Brighton’s Big Screen returns for 2013, to bring a month of magical movies to the City’s seafront. Gun, be all ‘gangsta’ for Brighton Rock, look out for those scruffy Rockers on the Bank Holiday during Quadrophenia, or thrill to the reunion story of England’s most iconic indie band in Shane Meadows’ labour of love: The Stone Roses: Made of Stone. It’s not only the screen that’s getting an upgrade, there’ll be a new seated grandstand, VIP area, with improved bar and refreshment areas for all to enjoy. Special themed weekends and evenings, including an exclusive chance to meet the stars are in the pipeline, ideal for kids and adults alike. You will also be able to pre book tickets to the exclusive Big Screen VIP grandstand to ensure seating, high quality audio, usherette service and free popcorn. S ’ Y L A D MR P O H S H S A M PIE & BY LUCY HALLETT Being asked to venture into Brighton Square in the Lanes must be much the same as Britain’s fattest man being asked to a chocolate factory- in other words, it is really not too much of a stretch. My reason for visiting this time was the arrival of Mr Daly’s- an authentic East End Pie and Mash shop. I was informed that Mr Daly’s springs from the same imaginative and cool mind that conceived The Tea Cosy Tearooms in Kemp Town, so I already had high expectations; happily I wasn’t disappointed. The interior of the shop is really something to behold- Madness memorabilia nestles next to pearly king and queen costumes. A large fish tank occupies the same piece of wall as World War II paraphernalia. The almost museum-like quality of the place ensures that this is an eatery stamped squarely with the quirky and kitsch that makes places so popular with residents of Brighton. I would eagerly spend time wide-eyed at Mr Daly’s if there was no food on offer, but fortunately for me and my now rumbling tummy, the food is the star attraction. What I found overwhelming was the attention to detail in order to mimic the pie and mash shops of years gone by. There are no knives, only forks and spoons, as this is how cutlery was always served. Likewise, the pies can be served slightly burnt, as again, this taste was one savoured by the East End crowd. They leave their mash un-messed with, and their liquor binds unmistakable parsley and eel flavours. Their pies combine two different types of pastry, and they freshly mince their own beef. I have to say the pie, mash and liquor was the best I’ve had. The mash had a stodgy yet fluffy quality that I have never experienced before, and

the pie was so beautifully meaty and tasty that I said to my dining companion I could eat it every day for a month. The liquor tied the two elements together perfectly. After feeling stuffed, and talking to the incredibly passionate Jim and David about their seemingly endless endeavours to get the restaurant and the food exactly spot on, it was with genuine shock that I observed the prices. Pie, mash and liquor will set you back a mere £4, Jellied Eels are £3 and you can get a tea or coffee for a quid.
