JUNE 2011 ON THE SCENE

BRIGHTON DURING JUNE WITH JOEL WINDELS

So despite all the obvious signs, the world didn’t end in May, meaning you probably cleared your schedule for June. Why did you assume you’d be hanging out with Jesus by this point? Don’t fret, God can wait. There’s stuff happening in Brighton instead. So in the month that the events of Call of Duty 4 and Battle L.A. are supposed to be set, we will officially welcome in the Great British summer during the solstice, which is on the 21st. I think we can expect all this lovely sun to clear up about 5 minutes after summer is declared then, as the inevitable downpour begins. Luckily the naked bike ride is planned for the 12th of June, while the weather’s still hot and warm, meaning you’ll get a great chance to bare everything your parents gave to you in glorious sunshine, whilst also admiring the hundreds of wonderful tits and willies around you as you cycle your way through the city. The Brighton Japan Festival begins on the 18th, and runs for eight days. Everyone knows Japan is the coolest country in existence, and rather than champion the underwear of some anthropomorphic cartoon schoolgirl-cat thing, this festival embraces the fantastic food, drink, music and culture from the land of the rising sun. It should be good. The main event we’ve got our eyes on isn’t actually in June at all, rather it begins at the start of July. On the weekend of the 2nd, the residents of Brighton will have the chance the chance to witness the best the sea, air and land have to offer down on Hove seafront. They’ve got music. They’ve got charity. They’ve got extreme sports. They’ve got food. They’ve got a ridiculous paddle-related competition’s. They’ve got disabled access. They’ve got David Hasselhoff. No promises on that last one. If this all sounds like something out of your wildest dreams and beyond the limits of your wallets: don’t worry, it’s completely free though it’d be nice if you donated a little dollar while you’re there. The day before D-Day (that’s the 5th, folks) is when wildlife enthusiasts embark upon Stanmer Park for the annual Springwatch festival. Again, this bad boy is free and is the number one place to get involved in local wildlife and see some of the best human and animal entertainment available. Oh, and Morris Dancing. Elsewhere in Brighton this June: Brighton fashion week, a wedding event, an art deco fair, a murder mystery night, a photographic treasure hunt, a creative speed-dating evening, the Kemptown carnival and a James Bond night. Get involved. Go to them all.

KEMPTOWN CARNIVAL —4TH JUNE It’s that time of year again when the eastside’s finest and funkiest community celebrations will be taking over St Georges Road: yes, it’s Kemptown Carnival-time! On Saturday June 4th, it’s all about promoting the spirit of one of Brighton’s quirkier quarters, and giving locals the opportunity to perform and take part in street performance and music workshops. Additionally, capoeira displays, dance troupes, graffiti workshops, break

dancing, art exhibitions, a children’s area, and magicians are going to ensure the festivities go with a bang, and with an expected turnout of 10,000, this isn’t just some humdrum village fete. Providing the fabulously thunderous samba will be Carnival Collective and The Parade of Flowers, and with three stages, there’s going to be plenty of other incredible music to blow your socks off. Afro Latino Funk Kalakuta Millionaires have taken the UK by storm this year. Expect blistering brass,

stunning harmonies and an explosive rhythm section from them. Local lads Autumn Red will be offering up their contemporary countryfolk and Tin Roots with their distinct modern reggae/ska sound should definitely appeal to fans of vintage ska and roots reggae. So, if you’re after a seeeeriously good day out with an amazing atmosphere, head to the east on Saturday June 4th. It might just be the best thing you do all year. —by Beki Turner

LIVE MUSIC GUIDE What to see this month? Check out our live music guide highlighting some top attractions during June. —By Brad Middleton

BRIGHTON JAPAN 22-25TH JUNE WWW.MELTINGVINYL.CO.UK So many festivals and so little time, what is a person to do in Brighton for May and June but get out there and get into it! Here’s another one too for your delectation for all you Japan obsessed hipsters out there to enjoy and this promises to be some weekend! First up, a truly great movie and some great music with a showing of the classic Lost in Translation, starring the legend that is Bill Murray and a whole host of others plus music from Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine fame. Unfortunately he will not be playing this event but there is music scheduled so turn up and expect something very strange and Japanese. The next evening is a round-table discussion on all things Japanese from manga to beer to music and is hosted by those lovely people over at the Catalyst Club. Then on the third evening a night of great new Japanese music featuring No Cars, Kuaigora, Tenniscoats as well as DJs from Japan Underground and finally to wrap up the whole thing the last night features one of those great Japanese inventions, karaoke, as

you’ve never seen it before with a band playing the tracks you sing along to and it’s going to feature all those classic and new tunes you can’t resist singing after a few beers! Essentially this is all about Japan and displaying what an amazing cultural hotspot it is and you’d be a fool to miss it if you are in anyway interesting in following new music. THE BATTLES 3RD JUNE @ CONCORDE2 The Battles return to Brighton with their unique take on all things experimental and rock and this promises to be some show. Not only can you see one of the top bands on the planet play a great little venue but for only £3 more you can get to hang out at the after-show party. What’s not too like here? There sound has been developing for almost ten years now and they are surely one of the most interesting and captivating bands out there doing their own unique thing which should be enough of a recommendation in these days of mass rampant commercialism and the constant chase to get on the latest bandwagon! THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA 30TH JUNE @ CONCORDE2 The Concorde2 really has some great shows this month and this is another that should prove an interesting night. Blending jazz and electro without getting all head nodding is something this lot pride themselves on. Whilst still brilliantly gifted musicians they definitely want to put on a show first which for us in Brighton is always a sure fire way to win fans! Culling material from over twenty years in the business they will doubtless be adored by old fans as well as garnering a lot of attention for the newer members of the audience.

TUNE-YARDS + THOUSANDS 21ST JUNE @ HAUNT Those cool young dudes over at One Inch Badge are always putting on interesting shows and this looks like it’ll be another. This show puts together some of the finest folk-influenced acts on the scene today but who bring a little extra to the genre – TuneYards bring ukeleles and experimentation via tape-loops and sound collage to the mix and really drag folk into the new century. Thousands are a lucky band and clearly a good band as their debut album has just been released by those cool guys over at Bella Union, the staple owned by Robin Guthrie of former Cocteau Twins fame. This should be an excellent show. FOY VANCE 27TH JUNE @ KOMEDIA A gospel singer from Northern Ireland who spent the first five years of his life travelling the American south with his preacher parents sounds like an interesting story and boy does this guy deliver on that promise. Influenced by some of soul music’s greatest artist – think Otis Redding, think Nina Simone, just think damn good music! Get to this show now because if there is any justice left in this industry called music this guy should be huge very soon!

JUNE 2011BRIGHTON FESTI THE DOGGUMENTARY

THE DOGGUMENTARY HITS BRIGHTON DOME In typical hip-hop style, Snoop Dogg, undisputedly one of the living legends of rap, kept the audience waiting fifteen minutes before coming out to replace the mediocre support act, Maverick Sabre. Entombed within the dark surroundings of the very grandiose Brighton Dome, the anticipation and atmosphere in the crowd was building up to extreme proportions. Suddenly everything went silent, the background music cut out and everyone screamed as several of Snoop’s ‘biatches’ ran into view dressed in Adidas shell-suits. Within seconds Snoop was bouncing out onto the stage, his fist obscured by a knuckle-dustered microphone the size of a small child’s head. Wasting no time at all he jumped straight into his extensive back catalogue of worldwide smash-hits, including the old classics Gin & Juice, Lodi Dodi and Next Episode as well as the more recent Drop It Like It’s Hot. There wasn’t a single moment during the show that lacked in vocal or overall sound quality. Furthermore, the intimate, cavern-like setting provided

top-notch acoustics. His performance never came across as power-hungry, over-bearing or intimidating, instead performing in a refreshingly family-friendly manner. Never was this tender side more apparent than when Snoop, alongside Kurupt and Daz Dillinger, stood in silence in memory of Nate Dogg, who sadly passed away two months earlier. I think for the majority of people, including myself, this was both unexpected and really rather moving. The night was predictably capped off with a run through of some of Snoop’s more mainstream material, including the new David Guetta-produced ‘Sweat’. Personally I don’t think this ‘party hip hop’ guise compares in any way to his former gangsta rap incarnation, but I guess it’s hard to find any artists these days who haven’t sold out in some form or another. Saying that, it was a great way to end the evening, making the crowd go wild... just a shame it was a Sunday night. —Image and words by Oli Lyons.

JUNE 2011 ALOE BLACC

ALOE BLACC AND THE GRAND SCHEME ‘I Need A Dollar’ struck a chord in the States after being used as the title theme of the new HBO show ‘How To Make It in America’ and became a sleeper hit in the UK after becoming A-listed on BBC radio playlists long before its official release as a single. It has been heralded by many as the first genuine anthem of the recession.

images and review by Josh Redfearn

Aloe Blacc claims inspiration for his hit came from hearing recordings of chain gangs singing in the field. This influence could not be clearer than in the roots rhythm and repetitive mantra reinforced in ‘I Need A Dollar’, and in this context becomes especially poignant and shows the strength and relevancy of Aloe Blacc’s message. The Panamanian-American hip-hop singer is also a student of psycholinguistics and communication, which he believes has helped to inform his song writing. Aloe Blacc’s recent visit to Brighton meant Good Things for those attending his sold out show at the Concorde2. Arriving late, I guiltily squeezed my way through the crowd to get a better position in which to soak up the atmosphere. Aloe Blacc, after introducing himself and his band The Grand Scheme, began by familiarising himself and the audience with a jazzy intro that teased the melody of his up-and-coming first single “I Need A Dollar”. He then launched into the songs ‘Hey Brother’ and ‘Green Lights’ respectively. Aloe carved a set list made entirely of his latest work and each delivery ended with rapturous applause. The Grand Scheme’s talent equally matched Aloe Blacc’s charm, with interludes between songs offering insight into Good Things’ creative direction. As the hit ‘I Need A Dollar’

began, it felt justified that it should come two-thirds into the set. With members of the audience raising lighters and pulling real dollar bills out to wave in the air, Aloe’s delight was clear and an indicator that despite the relatively heavy message of the song that his music’s intention is one of education and togetherness. Covers included Velvet Underground tune ‘Femme Fatal’, which with its newer interpretation, has become Aloe’s own political bite at America. Later in the show came collaborations, with support act and fellow hip-hop artist Maya Jupiter adding a playful and sexy dynamic to Aloe’s suave performance. As the finale drummed to a crescendo, the band moved through a range of styles referencing dance hall, reggae, hip-hop and dubstep. Aloe’s set culminated in spotlight solos from band members, each one whom effortlessly weaved new sounds into the finale. Flowing across the stage was the finger snapping Aloe Blacc, who appeared the very image of the Godfather of Soul, conjuring up visual parallels with James Brown and hitting the vocal heights of Stevie Wonder, all with the lyrical weight and political motivation of Gil Scott Heron. The Brighton gig was the last tour date in Europe for the ‘I Need A Dollar’ tour, and his next stop is in Australia, then a return to the USA.

MAY 2011 INTERVIEW — HOWE GELB

RETURN OF THE VAK Interview Feature: Karl Bray from Kovak Guitarist/Vocals, KOVAK

a cleaner, more synth-heavy record. Andy Gray really brought a lot more of a pop influence to the group as well, along with loads of old-school analogue synthesizers.” What was it like working with Andy Gray? [Dance producer who previously worked with Gary Newman and Paul Oakenfold to name a couple]

What do a fear of flying, old-school analogue synthesizersand sleeping in a haunted house all have in common? James Rowland found out...

As it turns out, they all have Kovak guitarist and vocalist Karl Bray in common. Bray should not have time to chat, he is a busy man. Between doing major building work on his flat, recording the latest material with Kovak and preparing for a summer of touring with the band, remarkably he has made time to share a few thoughts with Bn1 Magazine. Last time we spoke to Karl, Kovak were writing their new album and preparing for a series of gigs at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival. It seems his workload only goes up... Brighton-based electro-pop outfit Kovak released their first record, Heroes & High Heels, back in 2010. Their debut seemed more guitar-heavy than their new material, a little more of Blondie than Madonna. So Karl, where, when and why did the shift to the pop side happen?

“Well, he is a dance producer so I guess he is supposed to be an energetic nutter who’s kind of obsessed with analogue synth. It’s an experience working with Andy, he’ll get a keg of local ale in and we’ll start [recording] at 9:30am and won’t stop until 3am the next morning.” Whose idea was it to record and work in a haunted house on the Isle of White?

“It is actually Andy’s house and it was an 8th century monastery that has slowly been built on. It scared the shit out of me to be honest; I was sleeping in a room where a girl called Anna-Lee was supposed to have been murdered once upon a time and apparently she is regularly seen on the grounds.” So aside from a lack of sleep for ghosts and beer kegs, did the setting influence your recording?

“I guess where you go will always influence you to an extent. It is a very inspiring place. I think we wrote ‘Modern Lovers’ in the first half hour we were there and pretty much a song-a-day for the rest of the time we were there.”

“The pop element in the band has always been there, and I guess with the new record me and my brother [Darren Bray – drummer for Kovak] wanted to make

12

You have a big season coming up, with shows at Toronto’s North by North East festival, Bestival and a live show on MTV. How do you stop nerves getting the better of you?

“Well to be honest the biggest concern for me is the flight, I hate flying with a passion, so when I get off the plane in Toronto the fear of gigs as a paradise in comparison. I feel up for anything once I’m off the plane. I never worry about playing with Kovak, I worry more about whose doing the sound and getting that right.” There is quite a buzz around about the Kovak outfit these days, especially in Brighton. How does it affect the band when you’re on a good run?

“We spent a lot of last year struggling to be honest, and suddenly it all falls into place and you have a snowball effect and an unstoppable momentum. Club Kovak last year was a really big success, and that gave us a lot of momentum. Annelies [Van De Velde – lead vocals] has SO much energy as well, we bounce off her a lot. She is not at all precious about her music, so she’ll just churn out lyrics and melodies and I, being the perfectionist, will kind of try and pick the better parts out.”

Well thanks very much for talking to us this morning Karl and before we end our chat are there any gigs we should know about in the near future?

“Thanks mate, I think the only one not listed is a gig at the Haunt on the 10th June just before we head to Canada.” Are Kovak about to become the next big thing from Brighton? You can catch some of Kovak’s material and their entire up-andcoming gig list at www.myspace.com/kovakuk. Or listen to exclusive material from their new EP on the BN1 Magazine site. www.bn1magazine.co.uk

JUNE 2011 PULLED APART BY HORSES

SAILOR JERRY PRESENTS

PULLED APART BY HORSES JAM BRIGHTON—28 APRIL 2011 When a band has been off the road for a whole month, you can expect something a little special when they get back on stage. Chatting to Leeds rockers, Pulled Apart By Horses shortly before they played Jam, it was evident they were raring to get back in the saddle after taking time off to write material for what they’re currently referring to as ‘album number two.’ Over a few tots of Sailor Jerry’s and ginger, lead singer Tom Hudson and bass guitarist Robert John Lee revealed some interesting nuggets about what spurs them on and what life is like for a busy gigging band. They said, they weren’t doing it for the money and all they wanted was to play their music and ‘pay the rent’. Tom even mentioned he was ‘saving up’ for a new guitar as his was falling apart. They came across as two pretty normal guys - Tom used to work in a bookshop and Rob was in graphic design - having a great time playing their music and pleased to be back on stage as well as back in Brighton. They

14

reminisced about some of the venues they’d played including their appearance at last year’s Great Escape. They talked about how they liked travelling – they’d recently made their first trip to Australia and were still buzzing about having played SXSW in Texas. Fast forward an hour and moving from bar to basement, the guys were suddenly transformed into something very different. It had been the calm before the storm. Previously so affable and mild-mannered, they were now loud and intense. What followed, can only be described as pentup, raw power. And the audience loved every chaotic minute. With most close enough that they could touch the band, this was literally an ‘in your face’ performance. And it wasn’t long before guitarist James Brown decided to get even closer and throw himself into the fray for some crowd surfing. With Jam now a frenzied mosh pit, Tom Hudson also vaulted the barriers and dived in. Still somehow managing to keep playing, he

was carried aloft just inches from the ceiling. It’s no wonder his instrument looked so battered! And then, after an hour of being bombarded by scream-filled, high-energy raucous rock, it was all over. Exhausted, but elated, the band had galloped through their set at breakneck speed and left many of those present feeling like they’d been pulled apart by the proverbials. For the band themselves, next on the itinerary was an early morning flight to play a gig in Norway, followed by headlining a hometown show at Live in Leeds. And then there’s the small matter of One Big Weekend, Leeds, Reading, Sonisphere and Glastonbury festivals to come. Pulled Apart By Horses might not be playing too many shows quite as intimate as Jam, but one thing’s for sure, they’ll be just as frenetic. It’s also a fair bet that Tom will soon be able to afford that new guitar he’s been promising himself! —words and photo by Gary Marlowe | Images Out Of The Ordinary.

JUNE 2011 THE GREAT ESCAPE REVIEW

FRIENDLY FIRES

THE GREAT ESCAPE REVIEW The big time has now arrived for this small band from St. Albans. After riding on a sea of hype after the release of their first album, the Friendly Fires now find themselves dominating the top headlining spot at Great Escape. And they didn’t disappoint. Their new album is out now (its called “Pala” for all that should go and buy it) and whilst they played some new stuff, they also treated us to their past best. The venue was filled as they burst onto the stage with a triumphant hello from flamboyant front man Ed Mcfarlane before dropping the bass funky “On board”. The energy and animation of the group as a whole is reflected through “Photobooth” and “Ex-lover” as neither guitarist fails to stop moving. But would I be impressed by the new material on offer? I sure was as the powerful “Blue cassette” highlighted what an amazing live act this three piece had become. Mcfarlanes vocals are inch perfect and the mul-

16

tiple instruments applied to this one track shine through at each bridge, with a variety of chimes and percussion combining together as a wall of melodic noise. “Hawaiian air” and “hurting” also identify a number of different sounds and noises tightly bonded together with Macfarlane talented fingers on the bass guitar. Visually, they are something special; the front mans seductive rolls of the hips seem to keep all ladies locked in, whilst the raw sound of the band as a whole keeps everyone fixed on what they are watching through fear of missing something. The atmospheric “Strobe” combines nicely with the systematic flashing of lights acting as the backdrop behind the band. Looking across the packed venue, the audience pick up even more as “In the hospital” is played and the powerful bass line that accompanies every Friendly fires song blows everyone for six.

They cut short the set after playing “skeleton boy” and “jump in the pool”; two songs which have dominated television and radio for the last few months because of their pop perfected melodies. A predictable encore then ensues as the crowd are left waiting for a short amount of time before they reappear to a large ovation from the crowd. And they sure went out with a huge bang. They gave the audience what they wanted but with an extra slice of euphoria. “Kiss of life” nearly brings the whole building down and the extended guitar riffs and tight drumming half way through winds the crowd to the brink of hysteria before cutting them off and leaving the stage for good. The best act at Great escape by far and they certainly deserve their headlining slot. The new album is amazing and I look forward to hearing more from this band in the future because they are here to stay. —By Ian Alford

JUNE 2011 FESTIVALS ROUND-UP

FESTIVALS ROUND-UP BRIGHTON FESTIVAL The festival has always strived to provide a broad spectrum of delights in its programme, but this year all expectations were surpassed. Musically there were electrifying shows from experimental composer John Cale, far out psychedelic jazz/country from Giant Sand and experimental hip-hop from DJ Shadow. The word ‘legend’ is often overused these days, but it’s probably the only way we could describe the majestic Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, who graced the Dome with an amazing show ably supported by Max Romeo and Adrian Sherwood. The explicitly political stance at this year’s festival was reiterated by the appearance of the ever uncompromising Asian Dub Foundation, who managed to entertain and educate us simultaneously. Guest Director for 2011’s Brighton Festival was Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s pro-democracy leader. Inspired by her, the festival celebrated freedom of expression, liberty, and the power of the individual voice in society. These themes were reflected in many of the works on show. Kutluğ Ataman’s incredible Mesopotamian Dramaturgies utilised the cavernous interior of the disused municipal market with an eerie set of film projections featuring flowing water. This powerful, sometimes disorientating, exhibition used the unstoppable power of nature as a metaphor for the current surge of political change around the world. Next door, at the University of Brighton Gallery, Lynette Wall-

worth’s Evolution of Fearlessness told a series of harrowing stories concerning women who’d undergone tremendous hardship. An accompanying intimate, interactive film installation provided an evocative tactile gateway to the protagonists from these accounts. Demonstrating similar themes of loss and isolation, albeit in a gentler manner, was The Iron Man which brightened up the seafront in a delightful reimagining of the Ted Hughes classic, demonstrating how fear and ignorance too easily lead to hatred. One of the best elements of Brighton Festival is their resolve to hold large outdoor events that will include the whole community. Same Sky held their annual Children’s Parade through the centre of town which, as always, was immensely popular. Firestarters Compagnie Carabosse turned St Ann’s Well Gardens into a fiery dreamworld for a weekend, as their Jardin Flambeau proved to be one of the big hits of the festival.

Back indoors there was no shortage of amazing art shows and thought-provoking events. Circa circus made us gasp, in amazement and admiration, with their incredible acrobatic prowess, whilst The Forty Part Motet at Fabrica gave us an insight into just how complex and alluring choral music like Spem in Aliumcan be. As something of a climax to the month Drôles d’Oiseaux bound together a string of white cars. They proceeded to paint and decorate this outlandish train, whilst it was being dragged through the streets to The Level, where finally the cars were hung out to dry amidst a shower of paint explosions and special effects. We weren’t sure what it all meant, but it looked amazing. Once again Brighton Festival has pulled together a wide spectrum of world class artists in an event that has become one of the best in the world, giving the city something that hopefully everyone that lives or comes here can be proud of. — By Stuart Rolt

JUNE 2011 FESTIVALS ROUND-UP

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE Every year Brighton springs to life with a line-up of eclectic cultural events that span the entire arts spectrum. Now the largest annual cultural festival in England, it becomes difficult to actually process how enormous and important Fringe really is. Fringe City provided its everreliable doses of weekend madness in the Jubilee Square area. At first kicking off the festival in style with the amazing Heliosphere, an acrobat carried aloft by a huge balloon. Their Hit The Streets event was a huge success as usual, with scores of street performers from around the world flocking to the North Laine to wow the crowds. The closing weekend of the festival saw the Lets Dance event encouraging gyrating on every corner in a celebration of music and movement from a multitude of different cultures Interactive theatre was high on the agenda this year. Highlights included the luminously sinister And The Birds Fell From The Sky, where participants donned goggles and took a ride in a car full of clowns. Cars featured strongly in the compellingly voyeuristic This Time Tomorrow, where we sat on the back seat of four different vehicles eaves-dropping on four life-changing conversations. Deemed unsuitable for “children, sissies or chavs” the Carnival of the Bizarre shocked us with a plethora of serious weirdness, where just down the road The Ladyboys of Bangkok delivered their perennial y popular genderwarping cabaret. The most discussed show at this tears festival was undoubtedly The Great Wall of Vaginas, literally a wall made of plaster casts of 400 vaginas. No less confrontational (or intimate) was Theatre North’s presentation of Billy Budd. This classic Herman Melville tale of obsessional love

at sea was recounted by a naked man, inside a small bathroom in a town centre house, whilst he washed himself very very thoroughly. Theatre doesn’t get much more up close and personal than this. Thankfully, not all our giggles were born of nervousness. Comedy always plays a huge part at the Fringe. In fact, any space with a roof and a bar gets turned into a comedy venue. Exasperated Bobby Carroll Must Die, Pope Benedict: Bond Villain and Kevin Precious: Aging Punk Rocker were every bit as good as their show titles suggest. Faulty Towers the Dining Experience helped us revisit a much loved comedy gem and Late Night Gimp Fight made us guffaw once again. An often over-looked, but core feature of Fringe is the tours. This year we got to see the sumptuous interior of Middle Street Synagogue, the inner workings of Brighton railway station and

were treated to some rather famous back passages Rounding off the month’s jollities with a noisy crash was Nice Weather for Airstrikes. A free music festival, spanning four days at The Druids Head, that provided a platform for some of the towns best up and coming post-rock bands. Mercifully the bank holiday weekend provided an extra day of recovery for some very weary souls. The best aspect about Brighton Fringe is its open access policy, meaning that it’s a focus point for the abundant creative powers of the city’s residents. From felt making to literary workshops, from the eclectic artistic bent of The Travels of a Mental ‘elf to getting chased down the street by a mechanical horse, there is something that will delight you somewhere at Brighton Fringe, it’s just a question of looking for it. There’s only 11 months to wait till next time. — By Stuart Rolt

JUNE 2011 THE DIRT

THE DIRT

WITH MARK EDE Despite having a lovely office in Shoreham, overlooking the river, I’m never there. I’m constantly in Brighton, having meetings. What these meetings are about I have no idea; if you find out be sure to let me know. Anyway, my home-from-home is the Latest Music Bar in Kemp Town where the long suffering owner, Angi, gives me the run of the place, for no good reason other than she has a soft spot for waifs and strays. Which is probably why I feel so at home there. The office staff there are legendary. Emma, who books the parties for the venue, had her own birthday celebration at the venue recently and partied so hard that she actually got ejected from the premises. Dedication to duty if you ask me. Another person at the Latest you definitely need to keep on the right side of is Ruth, an unpredictable mixture of kindness and generosity, matched in equal measure by a mask of aggression and sarcasm, regulated by industrial sized chocolate and caffeine intake. But if you are a potential client of the venue, please do not be put off by these revelations any particular form of dysfunction by the staff does not in any way extend to any lack of care

22

or professionalism on the work front. It says here. One of the very many good things about Brighton in May, apart from the unbelievable vibrancy on our streets, is bumping into so many of the Brighton music scene characters in such a close time and space proximity. During a 10 minute head pop into the Great Escape Launch Party, I spotted 2 PRs, 3 radio presenters, a Brighton Live chair, a magazine editor, a couple of band managers, a clutch of venue bookers and a label owner, all standing within 50 feet of each other. Spotting them was no small feat considering how dark it was in there. We all played that ridiculous game of shouting in each other’s ears in a brave -but ultimately unsuccessful- attempt to hold a conversation above the relentless thump of the latest wanna be’s performing at ear splitting volume on the venue stage. We must, surely, find a more civilised way of networking but, there again, we might have to come up with something sensible and/or interesting to say to each other. For all my cynicism about the dodgy quality - emperors clothes if you ask me - of much of today’s new music scene (Courtney Pines

manager, the lovely, eternally optimistic, Nikki Meadows, rightly constantly berates me for my grumpy pessimism), I really miss the claustrophobic buzz that the May Festivals bring. The dismembered strains of live music attacking you from every building and open courtyard; the streets are full of denim and leather, leggy girls with strange tattoos, people, young and old, in multi coloured sunglasses, sharp and eccentric hair do’s, all screaming ‘rock and roll business’. Despite - or perhaps because of - the influx of hen parties and day trippers that June brings, our City seems such a less vibrant place after the May Arts circus leaves town. I miss the colourful, eccentricity and eclectic vibe of our wonderful City during May. For one thing, what other City, already an arts stronghold, is ambitious enough to hold a multinational music festival, a Fringe and major Arts Festival all at the same time in such a relatively close proximity. Not to mention a full on 3 day Festival just down the road at Meadowlands. God I like to moan sometimes but, God, how I love Brighton!

JUNE 2011 PADDLE ROUND THE PIER

PADDLE ROUND THE PIER Europe’s largest free beach festival returns to the Hove Lawns on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July. With acres of sea, land and air sport demonstrations and exhibitions, stalls, live music performances and entertainment for the whole family, this annual event has grown into one of the staples of the Brighton seafront calendar. This family-friendly festival started as a picnic for surfers living in the area with the side-aim of raising funds for charity. Now 15 years later, the Paddle finds itself attracting around 45,000 visitors each year and has raised £100,000s for good causes. The famous centre-piece to the weekend is the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’, which invites social teams and businesses to paddle the most ridiculous thing they can around the West Pier. Previous entrants have tried a crane, a plane, an Iceberg and a huge replica of Tracy Island. More serious water events, with top athletes taking part from across Europe, this year include: The Euro-Enduro Stand Up Paddleboard 20 Mile Race, the second leg of the British Paddleboard series, the UK’s toughest Ocean Ski race (measuring in at a hefty 20 miles), The National 3km & 1km Open Water swims, the Musto Dinghy Sailing Regatta and the Errant Surf Holidays ‘Pier to Pier’ Malibu Races. The ‘Paddle’ prides itself on offering something for everyone. As well the serious athletic contests there are endless fun activities for any level of competency.

After its huge success last year, the Disability Accessibility Beach is back for the second time. Special wetsuits/lifejackets, balloonwheeled wheelchairs and built beach decking are all being utilised to help people that can’t normally get access to the sea. It’s not just water-borne activities that feature over the weekend, urban land sports get a healthy look in as well. Skateboarding and BMX will feature prominently, with Streetsurfing, Landpaddling, Beach Volleyball and Urban Athletics all making an appearance over the weekend. There’s due to be Beach Buggy and Beach Cruiser display, or you could simply lie back and watch the RNLI perform their off-shore Air/Sea Rescue Display. For the predominately lazy amongst us, the Brunswick’s Tropic beach bars will be open during the day. In addition there’s a Beach Luau on Saturday evening. Tickets for this special after-party will be on sale on Saturday in the Paddle village from the highly visible (and always friendly) Paddle volunteers. As always there’ll be a live music arena with up and coming bands playing throughout the two days. There’ll be a full-on Ukulele Jamboree as enthusiasts play Hawaiian style; or why not throw some shapes at the Brighton Jive Tea Dance? The children’s entertainment arena also returns with entertainment provided by and for kids. Entrance to the Paddle village is free, but the organisers are asking for a paltry £1 donation. This makes a huge difference to the charities involved. This year all money raised will be split equally between: The RNLI, the Teenage Cancer Trust and Surf Relief. —by Stuart Rolt www.paddleroundthepier.com facebook.com/PaddleRoundThePier

JUNE 2011 VEGAN FARE

VEGAN FARE RESTAURANT REVIEW ROCK OLA Rock-Ola is a small 1950’s diner/cafe tucked away at the end of the North Laines with those in the know expressing as a hidden gem. It’s not Vegan or Vegetarian but does have a dedicated Vegan menu with many treats and luscious dishes. Some of my friends are vegetarian and carnivores and Rock-Ola suits all palates without compromise. Upon entering, you are greeted by a wave of pop memorabilia. There are booths adorned in glittering blue PVC but best of all, they have a fully working jukebox playing golden oldies and it’s absolutely free! We reserved a table on a Saturday afternoon and we walked into an extremely busy cafe. Nevertheless, our server was incredibly friendly and remained unflustered by the torrent of food and drink orders thrust upon her. She even offered to make a vegan Coke Float for my friend even though she’d never made it before and the place was packed. I had the homemade lentil & bean burger and my vegan friend had the Breakfast Hash. Now I don’t usually like curried burgers but I was very pleasantly surprised with this one. It was packed with fresh herbs and the curry spices were unobtrusive and delicately balanced and the texture was wonderfully firm but not dry. The hash arrived as a mountain of freshly sautéed potatoes, with onion, mushroom, peppers and herbs which was exceptional. It was so fresh and full of flavour you could taste the thought and care that went into preparing it. Be warned: the portions are big and the carbs are plenty so order this on an empty stomach. Rock-Ola is a cafe serving simple, excellent food so don’t expect Michelin-style presentation. Expect great food, great drinks, lovely service and get as many free plays on the jukebox as you can before they throw you out. —By Danny Vice-Holt Rock Ola, 29 Tidy Street Brighton, BN1 4EL

JUNE 2011 GR8 SHAKE

GR8 SHAKE Nestling in a sunny corner of Brighton Square in the Lanes, Gr8 Shakes, the leader of a new generation of trendy milk bars, captures the zeitgeist perfectly. Bright colours, smooth surfaces and abstract art set the tone, while sparkling chrome appliances whirr softly as decadent dairy-based concoctions are conjured. A delightful array of milkshakes, sundaes, smoothies and ice creams are available, and are all made to order on the spot. Retro flavoured milkshakes are offered alongside a host of exciting confectionary based shakes, made with Milky Bars, Chocolate Orange, Creme Eggs, Jaffa Cakes, and Crunchie bars, among many many others. Legendary ice cream crafters Marrocco’s of Hove are a key as-

pect of what makes Gr8 Shakes fare so exquisite, selling both the ice cream in cones, and using it in their sundaes. The shop is the creative vision of sisters Sharon Smith and Lindsey Knight, who are both working together when we visit, radiating a positive atmosphere that gives Gr8 Shakes a wonderful buzz. “It’s a lifestyle choice”, Sharon says of the decision to set up the bar. “We both came from corporate backgrounds and had had enough of working for other people. Now I can take the odd morning off if I have to, and don’t have to worry.” They’ve certainly hit jackpot with their location, outside tables with kitsch green umbrellas decorate a sun-lit Brighton Square, while the nearby fountain gurgles away hypnotically. in the early 19th century during the temperance movement. They were seen as a viable alternative to pubs and bars selling alcoholic drinks. Perhaps the most famous milk bar of all is the Korova Milk Bar as envisaged by Anthony Burgess in A Clockwork Orange, where the milk is laced with psychedelic drugs. Happily we don’t live in a dystopian hell, or in a state of enforced sobriety either, so milk bars and pubs can coexist in harmony. Harmony is precisely the state I feel sitting back in my chair sipping a FTW (For the Win) milkshake, from the ‘even gr8er shakes’ selection. JUNE 2011 CAN EVERYONE LEARN TO SING?

CAN EVERYONE LEARN TO SING? —By Katarina Holmberg

36

Many people are told from a very young age that they can’t sing, and to keep their voices down. This can have a profound effect on them into adulthood and on their self belief. When people find out that I am a singer and vocal coach their usual reaction is “Oh, I wish I could sing”. I believe everyone can and that everyone’s voice is valid. Learning basic breathing techniques can dramatically alter the sound we create and at the same time calm a busy, stressed mind. Most people take shallow breaths all day long. Singers at their first vocal session often take fast, small gulps of air and raise their chests and shoulders as they inhale. This type of breathing can create physical tension which can lead to straining the voice. Bad posture and physical tension directly affects the sound we produce. When singers use correct vocal techniques they can fully experience the joys of their true voice and this can be a life changing experience for some participants. Singing should be a fun, creative and exciting experience. Learning singing techniques can give you the confidence to reach your full vocal potential. Tuning is obviously a major factor of good singing. Ear training is an important part of vocal coaching: training yourself to listen to music in more depth and to recognise the patterns, steps and shapes of music theory that come together to create the beautiful songs and pieces we all love. I have worked with clients who had major issues with pitching but through working on ear training exercises together we achieved great results. In live performance, confidence hugely affects how a singer’s voice is perceived. On a three band bill, if one performer has stand out confidence then audience members will more often refer to their set as the best of the night - not because that singer had the nicest tone, or the most musicality but because confidence can aid a steady vocal delivery and put audience members at ease. My advice to singers with confidence issues is 1. Act as if you are confident until you really feel you are 2. Enjoy the music and the moment – don’t lose sight of why you are singing and performing. You do it because it’s your passion and you love music.

MAY 2011 HEADING

PLAYGROUP FESTIVAL 2011 Once upon a time, there was an enormous festival. It hadn’t always been so huge, but had grown bigger and bigger over the years. The toilet queues were endless, the wait at the bar was tiresome, and when the frustrated festivallovers finally got served, the price of their paper-cupped pint was laughable. At least the sizeable sum they had all paid for tickets guaranteed big name acts; Shame they looked so tiny on stage from half way up the muddy field, while everyone else stood in the toilet queue. Heard this story before? Been there, done that and bought the (over-priced) t-shirt? If you think that festivals are getting too big for their supertrendy wellie-boots these days, then read on. Fortunately, there are some organisers who are still up for keeping it intimate but definitely not inferior… Playgroup have been putting on impressive events around Brighton for years, and are wellknown for their ability to excite and delight all who attend. In their own words; Our events are

theatrical without being theatre, musical without being just gigs, artistic without being exclusive, accessible without being bland, fun without being shudderingly ‘wacky’, and involve you, without ramming anything down your throat! When they put on their first festival last year, Playgroup clearly did an amazing job, as paraphrased by reviewers and guests ever since. 2010’s brand new festival is still being talked about, and that’s why so many happy campers are returning to Eridge Park near Tunbridge Wells from 5th-7th August this year round. Once again, travelling to and from the festival is spectacularly easy. Buses with on-board entertainment are going from Brighton, so prepare to be charmed and enthralled before you’ve even arrived at the festival site. Once you get there, you’ll be surrounded by stunning scenery and mesmerised by the installation art, cabaret and walkabout performance. There are going to be some impressive local foods, refreshingly reasonable bar

prices, a family area, workshops, games and a beautiful healing area. Expect the unexpected. With incredible live music from local and not-so-local acts, the line-up is looking impressively varied. Gypsy swing, glitchhop, funk, soul, samba, dubstep, reggae, drum and bass, electro-swing, jive, jazz, mash-up, breaks, hip-hop, electro, synthpop, ska, skweee, folk, beatboxing, looping, rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, cinematic rock and much, much more. Brighton bands include The Correspondents, Wide Eyed Order and Sweet Sweet Lies, and from further away, The Apples and Backbeat Sound System. The expected attendance is 2,000 guests, the line-up’s amazing and there’s loads to keep you entertained. What more could you ask for in a festival? There are still a few tickets on sale, but you better get in there quick before they run out! Check out www.playgroupfestival.com for more information and get yourself a ticket. You never know, it might just be the most brilliant thing you do all week. By Beki turner
