THE GUIDE TO BRIGHTON & HOVE
LIVE SAT 27 JULY
BRIGHTON COMEDY GARDEN SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOOD & DRINK FATHER'S DAY FESTIVALS June 2019
Welcome to the June edition of BN1 Magazine... Like a youthful Sir Cliff Richard gaily jumping aboard a 60s Routemaster bus, we enter the sunny month of June. Although we’re not falling for a runaway starlet dressed as a 14-year-old boy or driving across Europe to Greece (the latter is something we should probably take advantage of while it’s still a simple undertaking). But, Richards’ epic Summer Holiday, we will be dancing, looking at strange new cultures. We’ll be spending the next few months outside, singing along at outdoor gigs, partying at festivals, marvelling at open-air theatre and getting active on the water. After the protracted winter months, it’s time to feel alive once more. As usual, we’ll be taking you through what we truly believe are the best times to be had in and around Brighton & Hove. As Sir Cliff insisted: “No more worries for me or you, for a week or two.” Stop sniggering at the back.

ARC & VMS LIVE PRESENT
SAT 27 JULY
MAVERICK SABRE Local artist and June cover star, Rag‘n’Bone Man, returns to Brighton next month for his biggest hometown performance yet and he’s bringing along some very special guests, leaving fans buzzing for his homecoming. Rory Graham, or more commonly known under his stage name Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, is no stranger to the UK charts thanks to his hit singles Human, Skin and Grace (We All Try), as well as the tracks he features on such as Bugzy Malone’s Run and Calvin Harris’ Giant. His 2017 album Human, received triple-platinum status as it was the fastest selling male debut album. The neo-blues and soul singer blends an interesting mixture of hip-hop and R&B to form his distinguishable melodies due to being brought up on early blues and soul, think Muddy Waters, and teaming up with Brighton’s very own collective of hip-hop artists, The Rum Committee, in his teenage years. After the release of Human, Rag‘n’Bone Man had a very successful stint at the BRIT Awards. First taking home the title of ‘British Breakthrough Act’ and receiving the BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award in 2017 and then winning Best Single of the Year for his title track Human in 2018. He is set to play Brighton Racecourse on Sat 27 July. So far, two support acts have been announced, with more to be confirmed closer to the time. Maverick Sabre, a contemporary R&B vocalist who effortlessly blends soul, reggae and rap into a truly unique sound, is one of the artists booked to support Rag‘n’Bone Man next month. Sabre is best known for his tracks I Need and Let Me Go from his 2012 debut album Lonely Are The Brave. Since then, he has worked with Jorja Smith, Joey Bada$$ and Idris Elba. Expect to hear new songs from his latest album When I Wake Up, which was released in March.

Also on the bill is Ida Vallens, a conceptual art project created by 18-year-old singer-songwriter and producer, Anya Gradisher. Described by Mixmag as ‘part trip-hop and part trap’, the 18-year-old from Worthing has created “ethereal electronic pop music” drawing influence from David Lynch films and stories of the occult. Maria Philippou (VMS Live Rep), said: “Ida Vallens started making music within the lo-fi hip-hop scene in late 2016, collaborating online with producers from across the globe and gaining a good following on SoundCloud. “Her live shows are captivating, weaving the tracks together with improvised theatrical outbursts over a live electronic soundscape.” In addition to taking on the hefty racecourse venue, Rag‘n’Bone Man is set to appear as a headliner for numerous festivals across the summer season. Before his Brighton date Rag‘n’Bone Man will be sharing Sheffield’s Tramlines festival main stage with the notorious Nile Rogers & Chic on Sun 21 July. After a few shows overseas, Rag‘n’Bone Man is back in south London to play OnBlackheath festival on Sun 9 Sept. He shares the main stage with the iconic Grace Jones, which will be a surreal experience for the southeastern lad. For more information about Rag‘n’Bone Man at Brighton Racecourse visit brighton-racecourse.oc.uk or purchase tickets from vmstickets.co.uk. Tickets start at £46.75 with doors opening at 4pm on Sat 27 July.

BRAINCHILD FESTIVAL 12 - 14 JULY BY LOUISA STREETING Festivals have become an ever-expanding competitive market in the UK, all drawing huge audiences contributing to a multi-billion pound industry. With so much choice for music lovers, concerns have surfaced over festivals turning into corporate machines and therefore lacking in individuality. Based just outside Brighton near Lewes, Brainchild Festival is quickly revealing itself as one of the UK’s leading independent arts festivals, growing from a close-knit community of 300 to 3,000 in just a few years. Founding director of Brainchild, Marina Blake, explains how the non-profit festival has flourished since its conception in 2012. “One of the biggest things meaning Brainchild survived without a paid team so far is it is powered by dozens of volunteers who have all had the freedom to pour their best ideas and professional learnings into the project.” With newfound support from Arts Council England, their lengthy programme is devised to be interactive, with live music, theatre, spoken word, comedy, workshops, and film screenings. This community ethos paired with their inclusive line up has earned the team ‘Best Independent Festival’ in 2015 and 2016. Brainchild has preserved its DIY philosophy since Marina and her friends launched the festival when they were 19-years-old, with no VIP-exclusive areas or corporate sponsorship in sight. Last year, gal-dem reported one in three attendees of the festival contributed to the curation of the three-day festival. “People are pretty much always one removed from somebody who's involved in the production or the programme, which in terms of a DIY spirit definitely helps to bring the project closer to home and makes it more inspiring. It was always meant to show the scale of what's possible when people support each other.” The festival has evolved into a cultural hub for emerging artists in genres such as jazz, soul, and hip-hop. SpiritualAfro-Jazz ensemble, Maisha and artist collective, Steam Down, will return this year to perform explosive new material. “Making repeat bookings throughout the years is something we value because it maintains the festival is just an annual gathering and celebration for an evergrowing network of people.” Marina adds the festival
16
bn1magazine.co.uk
recognises the balance between what will create a varied experience for everyone there and retaining these artist relationships to form the soul of the programme. Other artists playing include Biig Piig, Allysha Joy, and Dublin rapper, Kojaque. Workshops will also be taking place, such as the inclusive life-drawing class hosted by Our Naked Truths and zine-making with Skin Deep. With female performers outweighing men on this year’s programme, Brainchild has exceeded the Keychain pledge to achieve a balanced 50:50 gender line-up by 2022. When asking Marina why she thinks this imbalance is widespread in the industry, she wonders whether mainstream festivals are simply unable to adapt their outlook quickly enough. “Priorities for most for-profit or mainstream festivals ultimately are about the bottom line, and coupled with a residual lack of attention given to gender balance within bookings, there's also probably a tendency to stick with what is considered a winning formulae of artists rather than make changes.” A shocking report conducted by the BBC Reality Check last year revealed 77% of acts across nine UK festival line-ups were all-male. Their statistics highlight the essentiality for the Keychain pledge, which 45 UK festivals have signed, including Brainchild. For Marina and the team, the next frontier will be how to encourage their audience to participate in reducing waste from the festival. “We've created more and more recycling each year, saving more waste from going to landfill. This is due to a team of about 30 Green Team volunteers, and if we could involve ticket-holders in the sorting of their waste, they'd have a greater understanding of their footprint and feel more engaged in our mission.” Community, sustainability and development remain at the epicentre of Brainchild’s success. Their mutual ethos reinstalls hope that arts festivals can still celebrate subculture and anti-establishment values. Brainchild Festival is at Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum in East Sussex from Fri 12 to Sun 14 July. Final tickets on their website: www.brainchildfestival.co.uk

THE PARK VIEW
THE MASH TUN

The only difference really is that you can actually lurk among the Brightonians as they walk past, in a non-creepy way of course. This indie space happens to be amongst the most hectic hang out spots in the city for the youthful locals. Not only is it famous for its juicy burgers and thirstquenching drinks, but it is undoubtably one of the most popular scenes to enjoy the sunshine.

Conveniently positioned in order to soak up the sun at all times of the year, this exquisite sanctuary offers a friendly ambience complete with assured Instagram worthy backgrounds. 10 TOP TIPS TO MAXIMISE FESTIVAL FUN BY MEGANNE GERBEAU Get Ready To Rumble: Get a hold of set times and stages beforehand and plan accordingly to avoid missing your favourite artist or finding yourself in a clash. However, some of the best discoveries are the bands you stumble across, so be prepared for some last-minute changes to your ‘to-see’ list. Packing light: Don’t bring something you’re not prepared to take home. Thousands of belongings get sent to landfill at the end of every festival, every year. Pack light and only the essentials. Instead of bringing a pillow, pack a pillowcase and stuff it with clothes once you’ve set up. This means you can bring more without compromising on comfort. Bring a spare phone battery to avoid the pricey and time consuming re-charging stands by investing in a second phone battery or portable phone charger. Or even better, buy a good old cheap brick phone such as the classic Nokia 3310 and you won’t need to think about your battery all weekend. No losing friends now! Check alcohol limits before leaving: It always breaks my heart when I see the abandoned crates of beer at the entrance on arrival. Don’t get caught out by having your alcohol confiscated at the first hurdle and double-check the rules before leaving. Or alternatively, if you want to be sneaky, smuggle bottles of booze in wellies and sleeping bags, but don’t blame us if you get caught! Customize your tent to make it easier to find: You have the same generic pop up tent that your neighbour and hundreds of others have brought with them? Either move to a more identifiable place like next to a certain stall or landmark (but by all means avoid the toilets) or give your portable home a makeover with glow-in-the-dark paint and a custom flag.

Don’t skip your meals: On average you’ll spend up to eight hours dancing and walk around five miles each day at a festival, tech company Withings calculated according to the Metro. Whether you do dinner camper style and bring a portable cooker, or treat yourself to some chips from the on-site burger vans, don’t just rely on your supply of snacks to re-fuel. Keep hydrated! Drink water, and lots of it. Your reusable bottle will be your new best friend, so make sure it comes along to everything you go to, it’ll keep you re-hydrated once all that dancing, skanking and moshing has worn you out. Metallic fold up bottles are especially handy to clip onto your belt, your dehydrated and hungover self will thank you in the morning. Use the drug testing tents if you plan on doing more than drinking. The not-for-profit organisation, The Loop, have worked with lots of festivals like Bestival, Boardmasters and Boomtown, to provide on-site anonymous drug testing facilities. Last year, BBC News reported that The Loop found an increase in people being mis-sold MDMA with a different drug known to cause psychosis and insomnia instead. Better to be safe than sorry! Keep valuables from getting wet by using a sandwich bag: If the weather forecast (and you) didn’t predict the random showers of rain, don’t let anything electrical or made of paper suffer. Pop your vulnerable belongings into a plastic bag and seal it. Whilst we’re on the subject of valuables, only bring things that you wouldn’t mind getting lost or stolen. So, maybe leave that brand-new phone at home. Struggling to get out of a crowd? Just saying “I’m going to puke!” was a genius tip on a Reddit thread. “People will move,” the user said. They also advised to let females in a group go first when cutting through the crowd as apparently they’re more likely to get let through. Sorry dudes.

SUMMER BREAK
A STUDENT’S GUIDE TO:
BY HARVEY BRENT Summer holidays are the thing everyone craves. The vast expanse of time to soak in the sun, catch up on a few books (which aren’t academic for once) and visit as many beer gardens as possible. But what else is there to do besides the obvious? This could be the year to ditch your annual routine and try something different.
VOLUNTEERING
It’s typical to spend as many moments as you can on Brighton’s glorious beach, but it’s still important we keep it as amazing as it should be. Every month, Pier2Pier host a beach clean up to try give back to mother nature for giving us this long, pebbled treasure. To make it more interesting, they even organise Community Silent Disco Beach Cleans where all you have to do is turn up, tune in and enjoy the tunes while picking the litter. To reward yourself for your hard efforts there are free goodies and workshops on the promenade for once you’ve finished. Fancy dress is always encouraged. What a wholesome hangover cure.
SALTDEAN LIDO
Dubbed the finest modernist lido in the UK, Saltdean is criminally underrated. It’s quite the pretty structure as well. It serves as the only Grade II listed seaside lido in the country. A ticket will include access to the 40m long heated pool and to all the facilities such as the food vendors and landscaped grass banks to catch some rays. Only a 20-minute bus journey from Old Steine, it’s perfect for when the sea is deceptively cold, but the sun is still shining.
PATTERNS
The incredibly popular club just off the Old Steine is serving up some great events all summer. Day or night, Patterns will be holding something of interest. Every Saturday they include a bottomless brunch as well as £5 cocktails from 5-9 every Friday-Saturday. Perfect to have on their terrace looking over the Channel. Don’t forget their club nights as well, Donuts every Tuesday and Midnight Funk Association on the Thursday.
TAKE A DAY TRIP
As great as Brighton is, there’s no harm in exploring further than the city limits. Luckily, we are not only surrounded by exceptional wildlife and scenery in the form of the South Downs but by quaint and picturesque villages and towns. A short bus ride away is Lewes. Cobbled streets, a Harvey’s brewery, artisan coffee
24
bn1magazine.co.uk
shops and endless charity shops are worth a visit. Daytripping on a budget. Slightly further afield, Arundel serves up one of the most striking buildings in southern England. Arundel Castle stands tall overlooking the fairy-tale town, which has a large selection of restaurants, cafés, drinking spots and lots of culture to immerse yourself with.
QUIRKY BRIGHTON TOURS
It’s only apt that the quirkiness of Brighton is reflected in the tours given around the city. Why not join the Ghost Walk of the Lanes to get your spook on? It’s led by an eclectic guide, dressed in their very best Victorian finery. They will be telling the tales of ghosts who haunt our beloved Lanes to this very day. One of the most popular tours if you fancy a break from the sun is Brighton’s Victorian Sewer Tours which leads you through the labyrinth of sewers which are still regarded as an engineering and architectural triumph. Don’t worry, there won’t actually be any ‘mess’. If you fancy a bit of interactive history, why not visit Brighton and Hove’s only World War 2 air raid shelter open to the public. ‘Take Shelter’ are non-profit and organise tours to take you down into the depths of the shelter and experience what it was like to live in one of those shelters. Still, probably better than most student housing.
RENT A BIKE
Brighton is littered with those bike dockets so you’re never far from one. To rent one, simply download the app to make the payment. You get 35 minutes of cycle time for £1 and then 3p for each minute over. Not a bad deal at all! The gym is usually windowless, hot and away from sunlight, so may be worth going for the more scenic exercise option. Take the bikes up and down the promenade or stretch yourself and go as far as Seven Sisters to get some incredible cliff-side views. Good for the environment and your health? Perfect.

VERY NICE BY MARCY DERMANSKY
2 3 4 5
Very Nice unfolds over a single chaotic summer, as the lives of several interconnected characters collide together thanks to chance, fate, and a little bit of bad behaviour. College student Rachel kisses her creative writing professor - and then agrees to look after his dog, taking it home to her mother’s beautiful Connecticut house, unwittingly bringing her mother and professor together in a disastrous affair. A darkly funny and deeply smart novel of modern American life that hurtles towards its shocking climax.
UNDERLAND BY ROBERT MACFARLANE
The much anticipated sequel to international bestseller The Old Ways from Robert Macfarlane. Underland takes us on a voyage through Bronze Age burial chambers to the catacombs of Paris via Arctic sea caves to explore myth, literature, memory and the land itself. It is a powerful and dazzling book, epic in scope and beautifully written.
SWAN SONG BY KELLEIGH GREENBERG-JEPHCOTT
The debut novel out now in paperback from Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott. Writer Truman Capote charmed his way into a circle of wealthy, powerful women, forming deep and intimate friendships - until he betrayed them. Having learned all their secrets, translated them into thinly veiled fiction, and published them in Esquire, Capote detonated a literary grenade that effectively ended both his career and social life. This sweeping novel charts his fall from grace, and is full of intrigue, gossip and scandal.
FURIOUS HOURS BY CASEY CEP
Journalist Casey Cep investigates the true crime book Harper Lee was never able to publish in the fascinating Furious Hours. Telling the story of a series of mysterious and scandalous murders committed in 70s Alabama, and the famous, reclusive novelist Lee who wanted to write about them, Furious Hours combines true crime and literary biography with compassionate, curious co-writing and a sharp eye for detail. A brilliant, gripping read with warmth and intelligence at its heart.
FRANKISSSTEIN BY JEANNETTE WINTERSON
The latest novel from Jeanette Winterson is equal parts funny and chilling, looking at the future of AI and robotics against the backdrop of Brexit Britain, alongside the story of Mary Shelley and Frankenstein. A young transgender doctor named Ry is falling in love - against their better judgement - with Victor Stein, a celebrated professor leading the public debate around AI. Jeannette takes you from the conception of Frankenstein on the shores of Lake Geneva through to an alternative present day Britain where cryogenics and sexbots are quickly becoming our future.

THE
DISCO BUG BAR &
Justin Rushmore came up with the idea of serving cocktails, beats and beers from converted VW camper vans back in 2012. He now runs a fleet of four colourful vans “bringing the party” to mini festivals, weddings and events in and around Brighton. Having served mojitos to the likes of Little Mix, the staff of Amazon and even had FatBoy Slim perform from his DISCOBUG, kitted out with a state of the art sound system, mirror balls, lasers and hydraulic lifting roof! - it’s no surprise that his latest innovation is a Bugbar combo DJ booth and tap bar serving local Craft beers.
The Dub Pistols, Doug Lazy, James Taylor Quartet and many, many others…as a DJ he toured the world, far too many Bloody Mary’s 30,000 feet!
So what led Justin on this journey… He was heavily involved with the dance music revolution that exploded in the early 90’s and growing up in the home counties he did his graft as a mobile jock in the mid eighties. As the nineties approached so did a few detours around the M25 where the hazy days of acid house were all the rage! It wasn’t long until Justin was lured to the big lights of London where, with partner and artist Jem Panufnik, he set up one of the most successful independent record labels of an era - the award winning Finger Lickin’ Records which sold almost a million records and home to the Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, A. Skillz, this was pre digital downloads - yes the vinyl era! As a producer under the guise of Soul of Man, with creative force Jem, they recorded and sold well over 100,000 12"s. Remixed
As the proud owner of a ’73 bay window VW camper it was only a matter of time until Justin’s past experiences collided and a new concept was born - The Bugbar! Offering a range of services from DJ booth hire, silent disco parties, mini festivals, through to party packages for weddings, summer parties or product launches. Expect to see the Bugbar popping up in Brighton this summer.
26
bn1magazine.co.uk
Around the same time he set up the award winning record shop Vinyl Addiction in Camden town, located in the basement of Bar Vinyl, a combined DJ bar café, which alongside the Dogstar in Brixton, was the first of its kind in the UK to have DJs in bars! A genius concept where you could buy tunes, drink beer and meet like minded folk…

REGINALD D. HUNTER
RHOD GILBERT
HORMONAL HOUSEWIVES
Has it been that long? Reginald D. Hunter is going on tour to celebrate his twentieth anniversary of becoming a comedian. The UK tour will see him bring his iconic and honest comedic style to forty different venues, including Brighton Dome. After becoming a feature of late-night panel shows such as Have I Got News For You and 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, it’s led him to be regarded as one of the recent comedy greats.
Fresh off his hugely popular stint on Taskmaster, Rhod Gilbert’s eccentric self is back on stage following a long six-year stand-up break. The show explores the hiatus he has had from comedy and what’s since gone on in between, which turns out to be… quite a lot. More personal than ever, he brings a fresh and brutally honest set to the Dome to discuss meeting with a man named John, who apparently changed his life for the better.
This comedy sketch show, featuring ‘Allo ‘Allo’s Vicki Michelle takes its audience through the trials and tribulations of modern-day womanhood, all with a glass of wine in hand, obviously. No topic is left untouched; weight loss, men, sex, therapy and even Zumba! The cheeky and camp show is strutting its way into the Theatre Royal this month. It’s expected to be brash, shameless and unapologetically crass.

CAST IRON PLAYS & PODCASTS BY STUART ROLT
Beyond hosting their own productions and new writing shows, Cast Iron Theatre have plenty to say about Brighton & Hove’s theatre scene. Formed in 2013, by Michelle Donkin and Andrew Allen in 2013, the company platforms original work and offers a hub for rising talent. “We’re really proud that we’re a ‘fringe’ theatre based in Brighton,” says Allen. “We use local actors and directors. It’s nice to be a permeant base for that kind of creativity.” Formerly housed in the old Iron Duke pub on Waterloo Street, they’ve expanded to present short play nights, full-length work, storytelling events, poetry and workshops. Donkin and Allen share a background in writing. Cast Iron sprung from a continuing desire to stage their own stories. This has gone on to embrace some of the local area’s most exciting new writing and becoming a proper producing house. “Like any good black-box studio theatre, because it’s deceptively simple it means you strip back down to the actual writing,” Allen adds. “You not going to be reliant on any bells and whistles, you’re getting back to the dialogue and the relationships between characters.” While there’s value in work which can be toured, the pair’s future sits firmly in Brighton, strong relations with new writers and other companies. “I think it’s amazing that you can bring in different groups,” says Donkin. “There’s a lot of really good theatres in town. There’s a lot of local writers that we’re involved with, and we’ve opened out internationally for our last short play night, which was amazing. There’s no end of writers that have something to say and need a platform to put it on.” The pair agree it’s easy to get lonely if you’re a writer, actor or director and you don’t know where your platform is. Whatever sort of storyteller someone is, Cast Iron believe their story has value. To delve further into the creative process, Cast Iron have developed their own podcast. “We were putting on short play nights, and ended up chatting to the actors, writers and directors afterwards,” Donkin tells me. “We were just in the pub talking about their process and
32

thought: ‘This is an interesting conversation, we should just record this.’” The series talks to different venues and companies, highlighting people they admire and bringing Brighton’s creative scene closer together. By prompting further conversations around the theatrical arts, the podcast has been attracting listeners from across the globe. “For any creative, a nice healthy amount of competition can be experienced by hearing others talk about their work,” says Allen. “We hope it will be instrumental in getting to the next stage of whatever they’re working on.” As an on-demand audio experience, podcasting allows people to dictate their own timetable and source actors or sounds. Because of this, it’s prompted a resurgence in speaking arts and forged a different kind of intimacy between listener and storyteller. For Cast Iron Theatre, June brings another edition of their Cast Iron Shorts, where submitted short stories (all based around the theme of ‘sanctuary’) will be staged. It also sees a production of Allen’s Will Of The People on Fri 28 – Sat 29 June at Sweet Werx. Set in a fictional universe, it sees the British Prime Minister asking people to vote in a referendum, but the result isn’t what anyone expected. “The issue being, when you give the people a voice, they will speak,” he tells me. Later in the year also brings a new stream to their podcast which focuses on fiction and short stories. Cast Iron Theatre realise what they offer is a more personal entertainment experience. One which relies on lush storytelling instead of raw spectacle. “If 30 people are in a room and they see a one-woman show, that’s then gone,” says Allen. “Even if that show has a fouryear run, there’s only 30 people who have shared that experience with you. There’s something alluring and magical about that.” Cast Iron Theatre bring Cast Iron Shorts to Sweet Werx on Fri 14 June. Check out the Cast Iron Theatre at www. castironbrighton.weebly.com

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE WEDS 26 - SAT 29 JUNE BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE
This play incorporates all the greatest writer’s plays into one performance. It’s incredibly irreverent in its stylings and as you can imagine, very, very fast paced. Although the originals are scripted, improvisation plays a key part in changing between so many of the stories. A rollercoaster of emotions is an understatement.
A classic Shakespearian tale comes to the Brighton Open Air Theatre as part of Brighton Shakespeare Co.’s mini-takeover of the theatre. A major loan is about to be defaulted. Will the crafty Shylock retrieve his money, or will his young debtor bring about his downfall.? Although technically a comedy, this one of the Bard’s greatest dramas.

After Andy goes off to college and gives his precious toys away to Bonnie, the characters are introduced to a new unenthusiastic toy named Forky, which will cause trouble and confusion amongst the group. Mindy Kaling makes a comeback starring alongside talented Emma Thompson in the American comedy drama Late Night. Following the decline in popularity of, you guessed it, a late-night talk show, the host hires her first female writer in attempts to bring the show back to life. The film focuses on the differences between the co-stars’ culture and age gap in a humorous way, bringing many unexpected and pleasantly surprising twists and turns to the plot. First debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Late Night, is sure to bring a fresh take on the difficulties of becoming a female comedian in today’s society.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME FRI 5 JULY // CINEMA
Just to quench the perceived public thirst for more skin-tight costumes, punching and quipping, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hits us with another fabulous instalment. It’s been at least 30 minutes since the last Spider Man film and now our web-shooting hero has found himself embarking on a school trip to Europe. Still mourning the death of his mentor, he’s now tasked with teaming up with Mysterio, the master of trickery and illusion, to battle new existential threats in a world which has fundamentally changed forever. STRANGER THINGS (3) THURS 4 JULY // NETFLIX
Netflix sci-fi hit Stranger Things season 3 is due to premiere on the 4th July following its US Independence Day theme. Executive producer and director of the show, Shawn Levy, confirms that “cinematically, it’s our biggest season yet” and that it will definitely be worth the wait. With all of the original cast returning to the Netflix screen, we can expect new and even ‘stranger’ encounters in the town of Hawkings. Not everything is what it seems to be, and the characters will have to face the challenges of growing up and discover new relationships beyond their regular basement set of Dungeons and Dragons.
CHILD’S PLAY
FRI 21 JUNE // CINEMA Director Lars Klevberg brings us a fresh reboot of the 1988 slasher film of the same name Child’s Play. Following a similar storyline as the first film, a mother (Aubrey Plaza) gifts her lonely son (Gabriel Bateman) the infamous Chucky toy doll for his birthday. Voiced by Mark Hamill, the doll eventually reveals its wicked nature and evil intentions to the oblivious family. The modern take on this horror classic is sure to refrain the audience from ever buying a doll for their child again!

VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL
MIGHTY HOOPLA
What’s looking its biggest and best line-up yet, Victorious Festival is back on Southsea Common for August Bank Holiday Weekend. Two Door Cinema Club and The Specials are opening the festival, with Rudimental as Saturday headliners and the iconic New Order closing. The beautiful setting overlooking Southsea Castle is picturesque enough, but this family friendly festival is boasting one of the best line ups in the country!
Pop’s finest descends on Brockwell Park in London for what will be an exciting day. Mighty Hoopla brings the colour, glitter and most importantly; the music! The Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan will be headlining the one-day festival, as well as throwback acts All Saints, Liberty X and Bananarama to remind you of the good old days. Alongside them, Scandinavian superstar Tove Lo, Kate Nash and Jamelia.
FRI 23 – SAT 25 AUG // PORTSMOUTH
SAT 8 JUNE // BROCKWELL PARK, LONDON
Alongside the acts, you can expect to see a wide variety of street-style food, alternative stages, comedy, champagne bars and craft ale arenas. Victorious Festival has been going since 2013 and it only seems to be getting more and more adventurous and popular every year. Day tickets start at a very cheap £35, so this is not one to miss.
Mighty Hoopla has quickly built a reputation up of being one of the most fun and colourful festivals in the capital. Queer London residents, Sink the Pink will be bringing their finest drag queen hosts for an amazing performance, as well as Trinity the Tuck, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars 4. A dazzling array of acts means that Mighty Hoopla will be sure to cement itself in the festival Hall of Fame in no time.
BRAINCHILD
LOVEBOX FRI 12 – SAT 13 JULY //
If you’re looking for something a little bit more zen, then Brainchild is offering a slightly different festival experience. Set in the woods in East Sussex, just outside of Uckfield, Brainchild is a small, volunteerrun festival with a focus on exploring your creative enthusiasm and the idea of bringing people together through music, art, yoga, writing or whatever appeals to you most.
Quickly becoming the leading event to follow in London’s growing two-day-festival-scene, Lovebox is back boasting one of the most attractive line ups in the capital. Headliners Chance the Rapper and Solange are met with some of Britain’s biggest grime names like Giggs and J Hus. We also see some of the most exciting figures in hip-hop and rap, like Loyle Carner, BROCKHAMPTON and the legendary Cypress Hill.
Not exactly genre specific, the line up is one where you can discover new music and new artists in a beautiful, natural space. There will be many opportunities to get involved in the more creative aspects, workshops will be taking place throughout the duration of the festival. A smaller, down-to-earth vibe is missing from the festival scene and this seems to fill that void expertly well.
Lovebox has always offered exciting line-ups, growing impressively since its beginnings in 2005 on Clapham Common. Make sure to keep an eye out for acts like Lizzo and Slowthai who are slowly creeping up the critical acclaim ladder, but then again Lovebox always brings the freshest talent, so what’s new?

NEVERWORLD FESTIVAL THURS 1 SUN 4 AUG
© Johnny Stephens Photograph
After pulling a Project X-esque stunt in his parent’s garden whilst they were away in 2006, festival founder Lee Denny has grown his small garden party into something huge over the past thirteen years. Formerly known as LeeFest, Lee Denny rebranded his creation in 2017, mimicking the Peter Pan ethos of ‘never growing up’, naming it Neverworld. Winning multiple awards for his work, including “One of the 100 people in the UK who have made others' lives better”, Neverworld is not one to miss. Neverworld heads to the heart of Kent on Thurs 1 – Sun 4 Aug. The quirky mixed-genre line-up is suited to everybody's needs, acts announced so far include Craig David Presents TS5, The Vaccines, Mystery Jets, Professor Green and Tom Grennan alongside many more quintessentially British bands and artists. As quoted from music legend Annie Mac “this feels like a mini Glastonbury”, her observation couldn’t have been any more accurate. With three different areas to endorse yourself in with plenty of activities to do, it really does shadow the likes of Glasto – luckily on a much smaller and less overwhelming scale. The three ‘magical realms’ consist of ‘The Neverwoods’, ‘Mermaids Lagoon’ and ‘Skulls Ridge’, all of which have totally different vibes. Find yourself escaping from the chaos at The Wendy House Stage, set in amongst the ambient forest - indulge in acoustic sessions, spoken word or comedy acts. The Rainbow Rooms is the place to be for those who love a dance, head there in the evening for a drag club and UV parties. And finally, for the hardcore
mosh pit lovers, get to 'Hooks Rock' for intimate live rock and punk gigs. If that doesn’t convince you enough, then Neverworld also prides itself heavily on being an environmentally friendly festival. Every August we see reports on the news of the tragic remains left over at festivals, how hugely damaging it is to the environment and how much of a mammoth task it is to clear. Luckily Neverworld have stepped up to the plate and put a scheme in place to tackle this, they have added a £5 ‘litter bond’ deposit on top of the standard ticket price, this is to combat past problems. Festival attendees can help by handing in a full bag of rubbish at the end of the event, a great incentive to get the £5 deposit back, and after a boozy expensive weekend, we can all agree that getting that five quid back is a dream. LeeFest have completely outlawed plastic cups, they have also started using used chip fat to run the shuttle buses, a great way to reduce pollution. The whole festival ethos is a party to enjoy with family and friends as it demonstrates a major sense of community. It doesn’t discriminate anyone, encourages ages of young and old, even dogs are allowed! If you’re looking to broaden your festival horizons this summer, then there’s absolutely no excuse why you shouldn’t consider this as one of your go to events this year.

WILD FLOR
It’s a lively Saturday night in town and Hove’s latest bistro, Wild Flor, is packed. What ended up being their busiest night so far, drinks and conversations were flowing well into the night. I sat at a cosy candle lit bar at the window and I couldn’t help but notice how many passers by were intrigued by the new restaurant as lots of people were peeking in and checking out the menu. Wild Flor is managed by James Thomson, ex Cin-Cin manager from Worthing, who met wine specialist, Robert Maynard, from Stenning, by working at the Ginger Pig in Hove together. Joined on the front-of-house is Faye Hudson, also from the Brighton area, who met head chef Ollie Darby by working together at The Gingerman. After refining their various strengths and with over 15 years in the industry, the four friends and former Gingerman Restaurants Group colleagues finally decided to take it on for themselves. Faye Hudson said: “Ben and Pamela who own The Gingerman are an inspiration.” To start, we tried a recommendation from Faye, an already popular dish – veal sweetbread, peas, almonds and sherry cream sauce. It was extremely tender and the sweetbread was nice and crunchy. Faye said that when putting the menu together they knew the veal was good but they didn’t expect it to be this successful. Some customers have come back just to order it, she revealed whilst chatting about the dish. Thanks to its grand first impressions, it’s unlikely this will come off their ever-evolving menu. Robert, as you would expect from a wine specialist, is very passionate about what his wine list offers. He expertly matched each dish with a particular wine, so as you can imagine I was excited to taste his recommendations. He paired the much loved veal with a light and fruity red wine, a 2016 Nebbiolo d’Alba by Tibaldi from Italy, apparently it pretty much goes with anything, and to be
42

honest, it complimented both starters and could even be drank on its own. Increasing wine availability is a big part of what Wild Flor want to do, they chose to do lots of wine by the glass – boasting a list full of them. Robert explained: “We wanted to open up the wine list so if people don’t want to commit to a bottle, can’t drink a whole bottle, or just want to try a variety of wines, they can order by glass.” We also tried the asparagus which was paired with a dry and fruity white Assyrtiko, from the Greek Estate Argyros. With generous portions of asparagus, shavings of strong cheddar, and sprinkles of chervil and hazelnut dressing, nothing seemed misplaced on the plate which was full of flavour. Next, we tried the highly recommended and new addition, BBQ pork collar. Cooked on an egg grill, think mini BBQ, the pork was soft and drenched in a fishy sauce with capers and hint of chorizo. Served with fresh broad beans, there was also a kick from scattered peppercorns, making it a really warm and filling meal. Wine pairing wise, the best match was a ten-year-old Flowers Chardonnay as this with the ‘Risotto of Aged Pecornio’ was especially appetizing. The strong hearty cheesy risotto with truffle and mushrooms added another layer when combined with the earthy white wine. To finish an already enjoyable evening, we tucked into a light and sweet Paris Brest. The nutty pastry desert was light and filled with a lavish portion of praline filling finished with a sweet dollop of cherry topping. From start to finish, each dish was really homely and packed with flavour, there is a reason why Wild Flor are seeing regulars returning already, despite only recently opening their doors only four weeks ago.

THE BLUE MAN
Busy Brighton is bustling with life on a warm Friday evening. May is a vibrant month on the cultural calendar with both Brighton Festival and Fringe dominating the city. With The Warren’s new position near to Spiegeltent, the streets are filled with people eager to kickstart their Bank Holiday weekend. As we turn the corner from Old Steine onto St. James’ Street, I see a glimpse of The Blue Man standing proudly in its newest location. I say ‘new’ loosely here. Manchester Street has been home to The Blue Man since September 2018, its fourth site in two decades of activity. Still serving up authentic North African street food, their new space is comforting and homely. Downstairs is kitted out with cosy seated areas perfect for cocktail nights and indulging in the kitchen’s vast array of Algerian bar snacks. We were taken upstairs to the dining area, lit with warm and welcoming light from the Moroccan lamps dotted around the room. An aperitif is always a fitting introduction to any meal, and so we selected a glass of Pomegranate Prosecco and a Gin Martini. Their martini is not for the faint hearted, with a sharp but warming kick, paired with a pleasing saltiness from the olives. The prosecco is dainty and presented beautifully with a dash of pomegranate juice and seeds. I was immediately curious to try the Sferia, their vegetarian Algerian Cheesy Dumplings, accompanied with harissa mayonnaise. Resembling the appearance of falafel, the little balls were very soft, light and pulled apart impeccably. A cocktail and a nibble was priced at just £12 – highly recommended to offer a delicate start to the meal. The Blue Man’s menu details an extensive list of nibbles, also working perfectly as sides to a main dish. The rest of our meal was accompanied by the restaurant’s two most popular beers: Morocco’s Casablanca, which was rich and full in flavour (£4.20), and a slightly lighter Tusker from Kenya (£5.50).

After heavy contemplation trying to decide if we wanted to try the Kemia plates (Algerian tapas) or one of the main dishes, it was the specials that won us over. My dining partner chose the extremely tender Lamb Shank (approx. £14), which is certainly for those with a healthy appetite. The dish was accompanied with flat breads and couscous, perfect for soaking up the thick and succulent sauce, which was topped with flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. I selected the vegetarian special, Roasted Butternut Squash, topped with mixed vegetables, a thick slice of grilled goats cheese and a red pepper sauce (approx. £12). The butternut squash was cooked perfectly, and I ensured each forkful had the perfect amount of each component for every bite. I thought the thin slice of fennel added an extra lift to the dish. Not a single bit of food was left on my plate. Managing to reserve some room for dessert, I was excited to see The Blue Man had teamed up with Boho Gelato to curate some special flavours for their Sweet menu. We tried a scoop of Lemon Sorbet, which is a refreshing conclusion to the meal (£2.50). We also received an extremely generous slice of Algerian Orange and Semolina Cake, served up with one of Boho’s special icecream concoctions, Honey, Rosewater, and Ginger (£7). I will not hold back in saying this was a perfect winning flavour combination. Rosewater and Ginger can often be dominating and overpowering flavours – not the case with this dessert. After years of serving, The Blue Man consistently delivers delicious and authentic North African food. With an incredibly friendly atmosphere provided by Laura and her lovely team, this restaurant fulfils any occasion. I’m sure it won’t be long before I return to try their Kemia plates.

GUT STUFF
As interest in gut health continues to grow, keeping our gut bugs happy looks like a topic that is here to stay.
BUGS?
I’m talking about our microbiota: millions of organisms that live in and on our bodies. Sounds a bit gross, no? Don’t worry, they’re actually pretty helpful - they help us to digest certain foods and produce beneficial nutrients like Vitamin K in return for the ride.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE ‘BAD’ ONES?
As with anything in nutrition and health, it’s not always black and white. What we do know is that when certain bacteria are growing more than others, it can contribute to us becoming pretty ill. C.Difficile is one example in particular - where an infection with this bacteria can throw the rest of the body dangerously out of kilter. For milder cases of this ‘dysbiosis’ as it’s known, symptoms can be pretty varied and it’s still not clear what the long term effect on health might be. There is a lot of research going on into what the better ratios of bacteria might be at the moment.
HOW DO I BOOST THE GOOD ONES?
These ‘good’ bacteria are ones that proliferate when a person is in good health - and having a wide variety of them might confer a bunch of health benefits. Eating a diet rich in fibre can help to feed the li’l critters. In particular, aiming for a wide variety of different sources of fibre has been shown to be helpful - as the variety feeds the variety in your gut! Aiming for up to 30 different types of fibre per week can be a good place to start.
Probiotics might be useful in certain conditions - like traveller’s diarrhoea or following antibiotics but as evidence is limited for recommending specific strains, you should speak to your GP or dietitian to discuss your needs before taking any. Prebiotics are substrates (basically food) for the organisms that live in our gut that may be beneficial for gut health. You’ll find lots of these in plant foods - like onions, beans and legumes. Kefir and kombucha are increasingly popular - in part due to their probiotic content. The thing is, there still isn’t enough evidence to say if they a) get to where they’re needed in the gut and b) have any effect on health anyway. But if you enjoy having them and they aren’t making you sick or putting you out of pocket, go for it. Head’s-up that pregnant women are advised to avoid any unpasteurised dairy (in some kefirs) and that kombucha may have small amounts of alcohol in it produced during the fermentation process.
3 SIMPLE WAYS TO START LOOKING AFTER YOUR GUT HEALTH TODAY •
Boost the variety of plant foods that you’re eating. Add in new fibre slowly, so your gut has a chance to adjust. Why not add some chickpeas or carrots to your lunch?
30?!
•
Seasonal eating - mix it up throughout the year, seasonal fruit and veg is a bit cheaper at the shops too. Aubergines and asparagus are good in June - check out BBC Good Food to find out what’s in season.
PRO & PREBIOTICS
•
Find a way to get active that you enjoy - there’s lots of research suggesting positive links link between physical activity and diversity of gut bacteria. www.levelupnutrition.co.uk @levelupnutritionuk
That might sound like a lot, but actually one meal might have up to 10 different types in it. For example a chickpea curry with mixed salad and pitta bread would have a bunch of different fibre in it.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that may be beneficial to gut health. You might find them added to foods, in supplement form or in fermented foods like kefir and kombucha.
