what’s ON iN May May is THE festival month in Brighton and lucky for you BN1 magazine has tracked down everything you need to know about what’s going on and where. A piece of advice: tell your friends and loved ones you won’t be seeing them again until the end of the month because we have one ‘eck of a line up ahead. With new, local, national and international talent in town, listen out for a whole load of up and coming musicians appearing in the Brighton Festival (5-27 May) and of course The Great Escape (10-12 May); which is already boasting 300+ new artists including Spector and the elegant sound of Lianne La Havas. Add Brighton Fringe to the mix and our hands are overflowing with music, art, theatre, dance, film and street performances citywide; including an unmissable anniversary. As part of Brighton Fringe, Mr Punch (aka Punch and Judy) turns 350 and celebrates his birthday with a party by the sea. I told you, age is just a number. Amongst the festivities and swell of creative talent hitting the town, you may also see a bunch of people cycling through the streets in the middle of the night. Don’t be alarmed. Riding 60 miles through the starlit countryside will be the dedicated London to Brighton night riders on the 26 – 27 May…Saddle up soldiers, it’s for charity. Finally, enjoy another couple of stunning London to Brighton car runs at our ever-famous Madeira Drive. On 6 May we have the Golden Jubilee of the Historical Commercial Vehicle Society Run with a whole bunch of oldskool vehicles, and I mean oldskool, before the infamous Mini Run on the 20th makes Brighton look like the new set for the Italian Job. Break out that beachwear! H-Bar brings us a tempting taste of the White Isle on fri 4 May, as Bora Bora Ibiza resident Oliver Lang shows off his skills. Oliver’s been rocking venues all over the world since he was a nipper, as well as producing his own monster club hits. Now a permanent fixture at some of Ibiza’s biggest and best clubs, he’s swinging by to show everyone what to expect in the next few months on the party island. Of course it’s the May Bank Holiday, so this is the start of summer and we’ve got an extra days recovery time. that has to be the best ever excuse to get blasted by the H-Bars massive soundsystem. May is here and as it’s due to be the coldest ever it’s a good job we’ve got lots of great gigs for you to get out of the cold and get along to. It yet again proves that our great little city is the hub of new music in the south-east of England and what better way to go and witness what we have to offer than to get a ticket for the Great Escape event which promises great new as well as great established acts for your musical delectation.

Terrible name but interesting band alert! Undoubtedly naming your band after what has to be a private band joke is a typically american indie type thing to do, confusing those who might like you and completely alienating those who don’t even want to understand you, thus limiting your appeal as much as possible. This has back-fired a bit for tennis, a three-piece from denver, as they are building nicely into quite a popular band and now with a second album to promote too this is sure to be a great show.

Great thrash-metal from late-80s heroes of the scene Prong, who come to our shores armed with their immense and best album Beg To Differ with which they intend to abuse our ears on this tour. The performance promises to showcase all that is great about this album; the vibrancy of the music, the passion, the dirty and distorted sounds and the intensity of the whole experience should leave the listener feeling great if the slam dancing doesn’t cause too much carnage.

This quirky, ambitious and highly relevant electro-swing duo returns to dazzle us yet again with their insanely entertaining show. Mixing up all kinds of crazy beats, almost akin to a history of all dance music from the wildest jazz to the very latest dub-step and most points in-between, with some great lyricism added to the equation it promises to be some show. Add in some crazed dancing both on and off stage and it suggests the idea that if you want to party on the 24th get down to the Concorde 2!

A band who emerged so quickly it was almost instantaneous between the release of the first download and their young selves being inevitably labeled as the ‘next great hope’. With the release of their debut album following hotly on from this tip, the world was theirs for the taking and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. That album is now a staple of any selfrespecting twenty-something indie-kid and the band have taken the option to play every enormo-dome across the country in the hope we’ll like the new stuff we hear as much as the old stuff.

‘A folk troubadour for the 21st century’, ‘A modern day Neil Young’. These are just some of the things they have said about Mike Rosenberg, a.k.a. Passenger. Originally formed as a five-piece in our own lovely town before Mike decided to ditch the rest, grab a guitar and go off to write and busk his way around the world. Travelling as far afield as Australia and the USA he wrote on the road and played everyday, often pulling in huge crowds for his impromptu busking sessions. Now the artist behind two albums, Wicked Man’s Rest and the more recent Wide Eyes Blind Love, we should consider ourselves proud of producing such an intriguing talent.

The alternative to the party down the road is this, the return of one of London’s, if not the UK’s finest punk-noise noir bands of the last twenty-five years. Hailing from north London Gallon Drunk always provided something different to what was going on everywhere else. When your correspondent first heard them they sounded like nothing he had heard previously, almost akin to noisedrenched homages to Leonard Cohen. Sleazy, cool, noisy and just down-right interesting, the 90s didn’t get much more interesting than Gallon Drunk. What they have to offer now, well frankly I can’t wait to find out!

In just over a week’s time Brighton, will play host to one of the biggest international musical festivals, right up there with the likes of SXSW. Our Brighton will soon become awash with hundreds of UK and international artists ranging through hip-hop, electronic, rock and indie. This unique festival, which takes place between 10th and 12th May at 30 venues across our city, is traditionally seen as a showcase for new bands and a scene setter for the rest of the summer. This year the festival sees bands such as Maximo Park, Albama Shakes, Shabazz Palaces, Mystery Jets and Errors joining the likes of Toy, Willy Mason, Spector and Perfume Genius. The festival, which first launched back in 2006, was graced by the likes of Adele, Bon Iver and Mumford and Sons.

Red Stripe lager have announced they will be sponsoring this year’s street gigs, so festivalgoers should keep their eyes peeled for the branded van as you never know who you might catch. As in previous years, a Great Escape convention programme comprising of industry talks and panel debates will run alongside the 300 plus performances. This year will also be the first time that a selected number of gigs will be open to the 14-18 years olds. The Alternative Escape, which generally allows those without festival wristbands to enjoy the fun, will be returning once again, now larger than ever before and across 20 additional venues. The Alternative Escape allows promoters and labels to host their own creative showcases. The Friday at Riki Tik, sees a

night of new electronic music from Brighton based acts Tourist, Curxes, DA-10 and Us Baby Bear Bones, plus a special DJ set from dream pop band The Phantom Runners. sPector THE GREAT ESCAPE 10-12TH

It’s been quite an interesting 12 months for band of the moment ‘Spector’. Dubbed as East London’s answer to The Strokes, their melancholic sounding pop seems to be earning them an army of fans everywhere they go. Making the BBC’s Sound of 2012 list, playing arenas with Florence + The Machine and being picked as GQ’s best dressed. I was lucky enough to catch up with Fred MacPherson, Spector’s frontman to talk gigging, festivals and their yet untitled debut album. By Bee Adamic

So you’ve been touring with Florence + The Machine in the UK and Europe, how’d it go and how did you secure that? It was fab, it really was. By the end of it we really bonded with her and her keyboard player, there was one night in Berlin where we ended up having a surreal night with her and her band and I was singing one of her songs.. wearing her cape! How it came about, her manager released our first few singles on 7 inch, on her label she has a label called Luv Luv Luv Records. She heard our demo ‘Never Fade Away’ and was the first person to say she wanted to release it. You’ve got quite a few tour dates left right? Unfortunately it’s all a bit relentless, well not unfortunately but we’ve kinda done that stint of the tour then we are off to America to play at Coachella Festival, which we are very excited about. Then as soon as we return we are starting our tour of the UK, which includes our trip to brighton which we are very excited about. Then we are off to Japan.

So you are playing at The Great Escape - are you excited? This is our debut Great Escape show as Spector, but I have played Great Escape before with my other band when I was a teenager I was in a band called Les Incompetents in early 2000. I love Brighton, it’s got a certain spirit.. it’s definitely got one of those vibes, it’s my favourite place outside of London and people are always up for having a ‘minor adventure’. So you say touring can be quite hard work, do you have any tour rituals or are there any essentials you pack to ensure things are easier? It’s a bit like banging your head into a brick wall repeatedly, but in a good way. But no touring rituals apart from get as much washing done as possible before I set off. Which track is your favourite to perform live and why? ‘Never Fade Away’ always seems to have the best response, there’s something quite cool about seeing the crowds clapping together in the same rhythm. It kinda unites everyone.

What’s the first thing you do when you get to a new town as a band? We normally always ask for the ‘WiFi’ password, as soon as we get to the hotel so we don’t have to leave our rooms. If we don’t find the password, then we generally will wander out into the local town and city. But we do try and make the most of every city otherwise you just end up comparing the inside of hotel rooms. So what other festivals are you playing at this summer? We are doing two live shows at the Great Escape. We are also playing at Field Day, we are playing on the same stage as Blood Orange and The Vaccines. Field Day is one of those festivals where all the good London acts unite. Then we’ve got Play Festival, Park Life which Tom Vek is playing at, which will be fun as we’ve been working with him on our album. We’ve got festivals in Sweden and Germany. We are also playing at the Isle of Wight festival with Bruce Springsteen. Then Bestival in September... so quite a few.

So the debut album is out this summer, tell us more! The album is due out in the summer yes, it’s taken a bit longer to make than expected. Pulling an album together is like a really complicated board game, where the rules don’t really make sense. I think it’s a really solid album, I think it’s my best work. I write all the songs in the band, so it’s like a summary of experiences I’ve been through, it’s really therapeutic trying to squeeze it into a three minute pop song. What will you do when the tour is all over? I’m not sure, probably go and live in a small hole in the Netherlands or something.

Once more the Brighton Festival takes to the stages and screens of the town’s best venues with its world class programme of arts and entertainment. This year the Festivals guest director is the venerable Vanessa Redgrave. As a result of the actress’’ involvement there is a bumper crop of films on offer this year. The Duke of Yorks features the cream of Vanessa Redgrave’s screen career, including her role in the epitomal sixties London-based drama, Blow Up and the cinematically stunning Charge of the Light Brigade. Also being screened are films by some of Redgrave’s favourite directors, not least The Killing Fields, a new documentary by Carlo Nero, which makes a strong case for sweeping reforms by exploring the fragile relationship between wildlife, land, taxation and law in Britain and Europe. For those that can only take their entertainment in four minute bursts, Adam Buxton – comedian, writer, broadcaster and video director presents a celebration of global creativity in music video form in: The Best of BUG: The Evolution of Music Video. Brighton Dome and Festival’s associate company, dreamthinkspeak, give us their new production for this year’s festival; The Rest is Silence. Taking place in a warehouse in Shoreham, this vigorous new reinterpretation of Hamlet combines installation art and theatre with a blend of performance and film. Britain’s hippest young classical ensemble, The Heritage Orchestra, joins forces with celebrated sound artist Scanner for Live Transmission. An immersive multisensory event inspired by one of the UK’s most influential art-punk bands; Joy Division, which redefines the conventional concert experience at Brighton Dome. Iconic American choreographer, Trisha Brown, brings a stunning retrospective of her best work to the Dome stage. In this production, specially commissioned for the Festival, the Trisha Brown Dance Company presents us with four works, which show why she is one of the most celebrated post-modernist choreographer/dancers in the world, including: If You Couldn’t See Me, Foray Forêt and For MG: The Movie, plus the UK premiere of Les Yeux et l’âme. Over at the Theatre Royal, Circus Klezmer a vibrant multinational production which blends contemporary circus and Jewish klezmer music, all inspired by the dreamlike paintings of Marc Chagall. Fusing a cast of musicians, acrobats, trapeze artists, jugglers and actors, this production creates a blissful marriage of infectious humour, exquisite artistry and passionate performance. Kid Carpet has been peddling his unique anti-cool brand of lo-fi punk-pop around the world for a while. But now, after finding himself at some kind of impasse, he’s impulsively started touring a version of his show modified for children. It’s a bold move, but one that makes perfect sense in hindsight, but what prompted it? “We’ve had a lot of horrible stuff for children that have made me go: ‘Oh that’s awful’”, says Ed Patrick, the man behind the Carpet. “It’s a sort of departure, but not a departure. I got to a breaking point with having children and having my career the way it was. It was fine for a single bloke, but it wasn’t sustainable for a family. Coming back at four or five in the morning and being no use the next day is a bit rubbish for a family.” The new show features the protagonist on a strange journey to a dance contest, and all the noisy animals he hooks up with on the way. Is it a big departure from his previous chaotically brilliant shows? “In a way it’s an adult show dressed up as a kids show. All of the jokes are for thirty-somethings who were about in the eighties”.

A popular support act for touring bands, Kid Carpet has opened for Arcade Fire, Badly Drawn Boy, Electric Six and The Go! Team. But it seems that having children has provided the biggest inspiration for Ed. “I suddenly discovered loads of little demos about what we had been doing that day, whether it was about crossing the road, climbing the stairs or going out in the car, I’d just record them on my phone. I stumbled across this collection of these funny little demos, so I thought ‘Let’s do a kids album. No, let’s do a kids show” Now Kid Carpet & The Noisy Animals are taking to the road to present a rock and roll theatre extravaganza for children. Succinctly described as ‘Oliver Postgate meets The Beastie Boys’,

Kid Carpet invites kids and their respective grown-ups into a slightly psychedelic world where animals rock out and the most mundane (for adults anyway) of daily tasks can be subject matter for a song. “It’s slowly snowballed. Now we’re out on tour and the albums out, it feels like the freshest thing since I started out. There are a lot of open mouths in the audience I can fling things into.” Ironically the shift towards entertaining a younger audience has seen him shift away from the tongue-in-cheek crapness he employed previously, where he utilised all manner of Fisher Price instruments and dodgy keyboards. “I’m not using so much of that now. It used to all come from junk shops and jumble sales. Then it turned into a collection, but it seemed that the collection was more important than the songs. “I realised that something was wrong, so I stuck with what I had.

The technology I use is a couple of Casios and a couple of Yamaha old keyboards and Logic on a computer. I’ve got a guitar now, which I’ve tuned to D open chord. I just need one finger, there you go. I’m all kind of heavy metal now with my flying V. Obviously we need to know who’s the most rock and roll of the Noisy Animals? “Gorilla... But Bear used to be in The Human League. May, the busiest month of the year is here to provide us with hundreds of hours of performances, not least because of the two arts festivals in town. if i Ruled the World is a site-specific interactive piece inside Brighton station. Using provided headphones this interactive piece starts at the Nightingale and takes participants on a unique journey where passers-by become players in a strange movie-like experience. as ever, kids get a good look in at the Brighton Festival, amongst the delights is tin Bath theatre company’s, Bee Detective. an interactive, multisensory theatre experience which follows the intrepid sophie, as she attempts to find her hive’s missing worker bees. combining performance, projected animations and waggle dancing, Bee Detective is accessible to deaf audiences through captioning and sign language and is essential viewing for all. the Old Market sees the return of the table to the town. this new improved version still features a grumpy and somewhat displaced puppet called Moses, trying to figure out what it all means. think

Jean paul sartre disgruntledly waking up on the stage of avenue Q. Down at the New venture theatre they’re putting on an immaculate performance of a streetcar Named Desire. a simple, but blissful, existence in New Orleans is thrown into disorder when the feckless sister turns up. Upstairs at three and ten present the Norse musical comedy Ragnarok: the Weird of the Gods. loki has escaped to wreak havoc upon the world and his press picture looks mental. the three and ten guys are running a pop-up venue called the Warren just off West street for the Fringe. amongst the treats on offer is Best of late Night Gimp Fight!, where these loveable and reliable chaps will be performing some of their best loved sketches. also at the Warren is Jesus: the Guantanamo Years. this tells the story of christ finally returning to earth, but encountering a lot of difficulty at Us immigration, mainly because of his ethnic background and willingness to die a martyr. that’s just some of the theatre thrills on offer through May. see you on the other side!

The Great Escape festival returns to 30 of Brighton’s live music venues on 10-12 May. It features some of the very best up-and-coming music acts in the country in addition to some generating a buzz from around the world.

Amongst this list the most exciting act on offer has to be Nashville’s very own The Black Belles, who are hitting our shores for the first time. Formed after an introduction through Jack White’s Third Man record label, this all–female hard-rocking four-piece play some of the most intriguing music to be coming out of America right now. Winning hearts and minds with their infectious and ferocious brand of garage rock, complete with enormous guitar riffs and solid rock percussion driving everything along nicely, these black clad young madams sound, and look, akin to a supergroup born from The Cult and The Standells during a heavy afternoon drinking session. “My influences come from early surf music like Link Wray and Dick Dale”, says Olivia Jean, the band’s singer. “Shelby really likes Nick Cave and Ruby’s really into T-Rex and things. We all have different tastes, but it’s more fun like that. I like pop music, I guess you could say. The surf music is really poppy music, but you don’t really see that in the Black Belles’ music.” Couple this to a close association with Stephen Colbert, plus a record cover too ‘exotic’ for mass consumption, and you have an outfit so cool even hardened indie kids admit The Black Belles are the Goth band it’s OK to like. One of the most compelling aspects of The Black Belles music is their eschewing of digital recording, instead choosing to utilise the masses of analogue equipment at their disposal courtesy of their label. “At Third Man’s studio, where we recorded the album, it’s

all done live and recorded onto tape”, Olivia tells us. “There are no computers or anything, so it’s very classically done. We were really excited to do it, because we didn’t know anything about recording to tape.” Obviously the road to success has been made a little smoother by the patronage of Dead Weather and White Stripes frontman Jack White. But he’s not been as much a Machiavellian guiding force as some of the fan-boys loitering on the internet would have you believe. Olivia is quite firm about his level of involvement: “The influence he’s given us has been more supportive to any ideas that wehave, he just gives us loads of support and advice. As far as the music goes it’s all our ideas, despite what people may say. We work very hard to write and create our music.” Regardless of any wrongly perceived artistic interference, being on an artist-orientated label like Third Man reaps enormous benefits for any developing band.

“We were one of the first acts on Third Man. It’s like being in a big family, they’ve been very supportive of us”, Olivia recalls. “It was all very new to us when we first started, so we did get a lot of special treatment you could say, but it was opportunities that I don’t think anyone would pass on them”. So how does the band and their sombre dress sense reconcile itself with the other residents of the heartland of Country music? “We tend to stand out a bit. We’re just doing our own thing; it doesn’t bug us too much that we’re not too much of the typical Nashville look”. “We did go to Gracelands on our last tour. It was pretty funny seeing a bunch of gothy pale chicks in front of Gracelands. A quirky mix of art, photography, live music and pop-up stalls was on offer as Art Noise premiered at its new venue The Bli nd Tiger.

Art Noise ‘Lost’, Sunday 22nd April 2012, Blind Tiger, Brighton. A quirky mix of art, photography, live music and pop-up stalls was on offer as Art Noise premiered at its new venue The Blind Tiger. In an extended event which ran from 3:30pm and into the night, the Art Noise ‘Lost’ edition offered an exciting day of visual treats submitted by Brightonian creatives, both projected on the wall and on sale in print form. Visitors to the event could also browse the stalls of local craft company Handmade, and buy the beautiful and eccentric jewellery they had on offer. Brighton-based print company Parliament of Feathers were also there, giving visitors the opportunity to screen-print their own limited edition posters. Photo Booth Boutique brought along their kiosk and dressingup box and invited people to deck themselves in flamboyant accessories and be photographed. And, as an added bonus for those who arrived early enough to grab a slice before it was all eaten, there was free cake. After electro-swing, jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and indie DJ sets from Mike Davy and Jon Simmonds during the day, there was live music in the evening from four bands. First up was Bella Feud, a five-piece whose layered instrumental, hooky melodies and soaring harmonies have led them to be compared with contemporary indie bands such as Arcade Fire and Sigur Ros. Next on the line-up was Ribbon, whose powerful female vocals, stunning piano melodies and tight percussion combined to create a huge sound which seemed to contradict the minimalist two-piece arrangement of the band.

The real show-stoppers of the night though were Them The Sky, an all-male five-piece whose complex and multi-layered ambience has drawn comparisons with the epic instrumentals of fellow post-rockers Explosions In The Sky. Finishing off the night with a flourish was the energetic electropop solo act, Protoplanet Disko. His lively stage-presence and up-beat synthesised sound got people dancing and in the mood to hit Brighton’s late-night club scene. The next Art Noise event will be the smaller, ‘pint-sized’, version held in Kemp Town’s Sidewinder pub on the evening of Thursday 7th June. Titled ‘The Wild One’, nature-themed artwork and photography will be on display accompanied by DJ sets. It comes with BN1’s special recommendation. FilM Some of Britain’s most respected film directors, Alan Parker and Nicolas Roeg, have previously appeared at The Space. Parker’s credits include The Commitments, Fame, Midnight Express and Bugsy Malone, and Roeg’s best-known work is the classic Don’t Look Now, as well as The Man Who Fell to Earth, which starred David Bowie, appropriately as an alien. Alan Parker was a particularly insightful interviewee, with fascinating anecdotes from his forty year career, as well as funny and, as expected, somewhat outspoken. It was surprising that we managed to get Nicolas Roeg, as he rarely gives interviews at all, let alone that he made the trip to Brighton to discuss the making of his most famous films. A rather intense guest, Roeg revealed his experiences on working with the likes of Donald Sutherland, Bowie and Mick Jagger. The latter appeared in the renowned 1970 film Performance. Since 2009, The Space has staged a series of events at the Duke of York’s. These have consisted of screenings of popular films and interviews with figures who worked on them. The first of these events marked the thirtieth anniversary of one of my favourite films, Alien. The guests were its editor Terry Rawlings and the costume designer John Mollo. Unsurprisingly, the event sold out. The print on the big screen before the audience was an original from 1979, which even had a huge red X, the science fiction horror’s BBFC rating. A few months later, we marked thirty years since the release of The Shining, which was great to see in the cinema. Despite this event also selling out, we managed to find a seat for Stanley Kubrick’s grandson who was keen to see the filmmaking legend’s horror classic. In 2010, we marked thirty years since the passing of comedy actor Peter Sellers. Following a screening of Dr Strangelove, we welcomed to the stage actor Burt Kwouk, who played the bumbling Cato alongside Seller’s Clouseau in The Pink Panther, comedy writer Barry Cryer and Sellers’ daughter Sarah. Having heard about the event a few weeks before, his daughter actually emailed me, asking to take part, as she felt this would be a good way to mark three decades since her father passed away. My own favourite Duke of York’s based Space events were our Raiders of the Lost Ark thirtieth anniversary event and A Movie Music Master Class. The Raiders event’s guests were its

This month marks six years since the first Space event. The Space (Southern Performance and Creative Energies) is a regular entertainment and arts event, which currently takes place at Komedia and the Duke of York’s. As its founder and Creative Director, I feel honoured by the calibre of guests who have graced our various stages since the events began back in May 2006. Each event has two guests, interviewed separately, discussing their work and achievements. We have had nearly thirty film related guests, such as producers, editors, directors and art directors.

associate producer Robert Watts and art director Norman Reynolds, who bought along the Oscar, which he won for the Indiana Jones adventure. The audience broke into wild applause as Norman pulled his award from a bag onstage. In fact, this was the only event The Space has ever done that had a standing ovation. There was a lot of love in the room for the guests and for the great film, which was so good to see on the big screen. The movie music event was a delight and more of an actual production than the others. The guests were top composers David Arnold (Casino Royale, Independence Day, Sherlock) and Anne Dudley (The Crying Game, The Full Monty). This event largely consisted of a selection of film clips which provided examples of films and scores that the guests had composed, as well as from films that illustrated the work of their own personal favourite composers. David and Anne also gave live piano based performances of some of their work. Exclusively, David played the theme from Casino Royale, whilst actually singing it, and superbly so. That was quite a treat for us. The next Space event, to be held at Komedia on June 7th, will see an appearance from The Muppets executive producer Martin Baker. As well as the recent cinematic Muppet revival, his credits include various Jim Henson productions, such as Labyrinth and Fraggle Rock, and Muppet Treasure Island. I’m pleased that we will have Alan Parker returning on July 1st for our next Duke of York’s based event. Alan Parker: A Commitment to Filmmaking will see the director interviewed about his highly impressive body of work. The event will be illustrated with a selection of clips from his most well known films. Film is such a passion of mine; organising these events, despite their challenges, and bringing these films and some of their behind the scenes figures to a Brighton audience has been very satisfying. www.thespace.uk.com

MEADOwLANDS FESTIVAL 1ST - 3RD JUNE Just a pebble’s throw from Brighton, the buttercup-encrusted grounds of the Glynde Estate near Lewes will be hosting our very own cultural carnivalesque celebration this June, for the fourth consecutive year. Meadowlands Festival has an excellent track-record for triumphantly returning with beefed-up revelry and sharper acts year after year, and 2012 is looking like it’s going to be an absolute corker. Despite last year’s arctic weather conditions, there was still an abundance of entertainment on offer with three undercover stages, the top class ‘Bang Said The Gun’ spoken word and comedy tent, and the coolest casino outside of Vegas. Refreshingly, Meadowlands flaunts a we-don’t- have- to- trytoo- hard –to- be –cool simplicity, which contributes to the consistently laid-back, peppy atmosphere. With music and bars open until 4am this year, there’s a stunning music line-up of local and not so local artists from gypsy jazz, to drum‘n’bass. Here’s a taster; Re-formed duo Lamb will be glorifying Glynde with their ambient, yet wonderfully kinetic melodies. Lou Rhodes’ stunning vocals are not to be missed. Speech Debelle is raw and soulful. Coming out of nowhere and delivering the Mercury Music Prize-winning ‘Speech Therapy’, this wickedly witty rapper is one to watch. Ex Gene front-man Martin Rossiter may have left the world of Britpop behind him, but continues to deliver eloquence and intimacy in every song.

With recently released debut album ‘The Hare,The Hound and the Tortoise’ under their belts, the charmingly suave Brighton-based Sweet Sweet Lies will be serving up fervidly folked –up countrypop. Beautifully articulate lyrics and enchanting intensity will leave you wanting more from these suited and booted gents. LTJ Bukem might make you think of sweaty 90s drum ‘n’ bass clubs. Is he really still around? Well, yeah, and the man who took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off London’s Charing Cross Road to the nation’s superclubs and then onto the international stage is heading to Meadowlands. On top of the fantastic music line-up, the return of the brilliant ‘Bang Said The Gun’ spoken word and comedy tent will be showcasing the country’s finest comedians, poets, and ranters. The return of the pop-up Casino can only mean one thing; FUN! With (vague) memories of dancing to Aretha Franklin under a palm tree after winning prizes galore on Roulette and Blackjack last year, I’m hoping for even more glamourous gambling and hedonism this year. Snowstorm Media with Brighton Film School are behind the Saturday Evening movies, if you want to escape and get stuck into one of many top-class films. FRINGE FESTIVAL FEATURE LIBRARY OF DELIGHTFULLY PECULIAR WRITINGS

In the latest of our “Andy goes for coffee with….” we decided to send him off to meet British Heart, one of the key exponents of the burgeoning new phenomenon of Boylesque… Here’s what he had to say, prior to what will certainly be an outrageous performance at this month’s Brighton Fringe .

So, what do we call you then? Well most people call me British, but in Australia they just call me Tart! Think we’ll stick with British then! For the uninitiated then, what exactly is Boylesque? It’s a type of male burlesque strip-tease really. There’s basically two types of burlesque; Classic and Neo. Classic burlesque borrows and adopts from the 1950’s performers and had a huge renaissance with the likes of Dita von Teese in the 1990’s. Neo Burlesque performers are more avant-garde and messier which is where Boylesque sits. It’s funny, a little bit wrong or very wrong. In fact, disgustingly wrong. There’s no tradition of costume stripping for males which we’re investing in now. We really go against the Chippendale type of strip tease – we’re not these muscular, tuxedo wearing beefcakes, we’re exploring the regular male as something that has an erotic potential. A lot of people find that initially disturbing or uncomfortable and we’re out there exploring those boundaries. When did you realise this was your calling? It was around 2006 really, I was working as a director at the Edinburgh Fringe. I was up there for a month and was pretty bored

and miserable to be honest. I went down to a bar event hosted by Dusty Limits, featuring a performer called Missy Malone. My jaw just dropped. It was so anarchic and just went against every rule of theatre and I wanted in! You actually began your theatrical studies at the famous Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts? Yes, I trained as a performer – it’s incredible intense training there, like a Marine camp. You train in singing, dancing, acting – all the fundamentals of performance. Strangely enough there was a very popular drag troupe in the 80’s called Blue Lips, who many people see as the forefathers of Boylesque, and one of them was a teacher there. That probably influenced me in some way subconsciously. Your act is perceived as pretty “out there” – has it always been easy to be accepted? Yes and no. Different venues have different crowds really. There’s a longer tradition in New York of burlesque acts, so they just scream and love it. In the UK when you do a corporate venue, they might not quite understand the act, so they’ll bring in Hen and Stag parties. I was performing in London recently and on my left I was being screamed at by a forty strong hen party, and then on the right being booed by a stag group. Then there was a burlesque audience next to them, booing them for booing. The night ended with the hens all screaming and hiding because I was writhing naked on their table – they didn’t quite know what to do. Boylesque will go out and attack the audience as it were. It turns the rules upside down in a way that what’s perceived as a male stripper won’t. It’s clearly something you have put a lot of thought into – in fact you’re even doing PhD in male striptease. What does that involve? Well I had to go to various universities to pitch the idea – I’m not from an academic background so it was a bit of a challenge. I was presenting it as investigating this new, important form of performance and of course many of them ran from the idea. Roehampton University loved it though and I finish the course this year. What’s the main premise? Well Boylesque is male-to-male drag performance. It’s imitating men by being men, not by cross-dressing. Men are always hidden as erotic subjects unless they’re these muscular sportsmen or Bond types, Boylesque is saying “No!” We’re anybody. Any man, and we’re developing an erotic narrative. You’re performing at Hendrick’s Library of Delightfully Peculiar Writings at the Brighton Fringe, what should we expect? Well you’ll be told you’re part of the urban jungles, and Boylesque has crash-landed in your domain, and as a result you’ve taken me prisoner. The main event is the public trial. I have one hour to describe, justify and explain my story to you. If you don’t think I’m worthy, everyone in the audience is allowed to rip my

clothes off and put me in a pot. If you do think me worthy, I’m free to go. Basically at some point I’ll turn into a monster. Good luck to the audience! It almost sounds like street performance which you did in Tokyo. Are the Japanese audiences different to the Brits? They love it. They have a huge history of street theatre, with some of it being very cruel. You use the same tricks though as in the UK – you grab the audiences attention using whistles and visual tricks and then…well…unleash! You also run workshops for interested people – what does that consist of? Yes, it’s three or four sessions where students go though the history of Boylesque, dance moves, constructing character, objectives and intentions. We guide everyone through all the design and process and then have a showcase. It all sounds quite an intense experience – how do you feel when you perform? I feel like me. An angry, malicious, naughty me which is….well, very similar to me! I never get horny or turned on, I don’t walk around with a chubby! IT’s just a less constrained, more unruly me. It’s different from acting in that way where you warp yourself into a different character, it’s just a more heightened, hyper version of the darker aspects of myself.

Well I personally do some exercise and training because I am working on stilt-walking, pole-dancing and the like as part of my act. Others don’t care and that’s part of the point of it. There’s a policy in Boylesque of body inclusiveness. I performed with one of the bears from Bearlesque recently and he was very rotund and hairy! I don’t train as a traditional man does, in the gym, playing sport, I’ve trained in pole-dancing so I guess I’ve developed muscles that a woman would. Can you see yourself stopping as the body starts to fail? Or will you be some kind of Boylesque Yoda type figure? A Grand-Master? Oh I hope to become Yoda definitely. I have no intention of stopping. The Americans, Tigger and Rose Wood are the oldest Boylesque performers I know – both a lot older than me. Because of their age and what they’ve been through, they’re so much fiercer than the others. It’s what I am, I have an urge to mess things up out there! So why should Brighton come to the show? Well I’m Sussex born and bred. I’m representing the Sex in Sussex. Brighton has a huge history of naughtiness and it’s about time the penis was seen for what it actually is!

friNge highLights BUG Should you be considering heading down to the Warren to catch a show, then you could do a lot worse this Fringe than catching the awesome Bug by Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, Tracy Letts. From the company behind last year’s critically acclaimed 40th anniversary adaptation of Get Carter, this compelling story stars Charlie Allen, Melody Roche and Mandy Jackson. This is an unsettling psychological thriller, primarily set in a grotty motel room, which challenges how we view the line between reality and insanity. A lonely habitual drug user, still reeling from a messy divorce, seeks refuge from her abusive ex-partner in a motel room. A series of circumstances results in her meeting an equally lonely absconded soldier, who is preoccupied by conspiracy theories. Their existence becomes more bizarre and claustrophobic, as events begin to suggest they’re under surveillance. The play deals with the issues of love, dependency, and the slow decline of a person at the hands of another. But ever present is the nagging doubt that, just perhaps, there really are external forces at play, justifying the couple’s escalating paranoid delusions. In many ways this piece is a darkly comic love story, but at times it could almost pass for a horror story. The Hanging Gardens of Brighton A standout part of the Fringe this month is The Hanging Gardens of Brighton down on the Old Steine. This three day mini-festival takes place from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 May, giving us a sample of what to expect from its parent festival, due to debut in Wiltshire this year. With three stages, all set in an amazing venue inspired by the corrupt, but colourful ancient Mesopotamian city of Babylon , this sizzling event promises a heady blend of Ska, Gypsy Jazz, ElectroSwing, Reggae and Dubstep, Indie Dance and Rock, KlezmaBalkan Rave and Acoustic Folk Pop, all in the very heart of our city. The name Babylon has become synonymous with sin and excess. Taking their cue from this legendary metropolis, the festival organisers are bringing Babylon into the 21st century as a parody of these complicated modern times, with an exotic twist. The festival in May, just one of a series of several spectacular themed events being held around the country, will mirror the fall and rise of civilisation through a utopian mix of live music, performance, installation art, cabaret and cultural adventures. Amongst the musical treats on offer are: Alabama 3, The Go! Team, Dreadzone Sound System, The Dub Pistols, White Mink, Roots Garden, 1 Giant Leap and Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer. If you like your entertainment a little more visual, then there is cabaret and performance aplenty, from the likes of Carnivalesque, Ramshackle Circus, La Bordello Boheme, Sussex Swing Dancers and loads more. You can party hard in the twisted surreal surroundings of an apocalyptic future, populated with grotesque machines, over-consumption and hedonism. All of which is juxtaposed against emerging social movements showcasing exciting new technologies in renewable energy and a sustainable way of life. Being a promotions company, we receive a lot of emails - pretty much on a daily basis - from bands ‘looking for management’. Here, verbatim, is a typical example...

‘We really would like to take the next step in our music career. We’re totally serious about being in a band and we have all the willpower to make it work. We’ve set our sights on touring the UK with a bigger band as support. The problem would be 1) Finding the appropriate sounding band that can also pack out decent venues. 2) Persuade that band that we’re the guys for the supporting slot. 3) Transport and expenses.’ So that’s alright, then. Please pass the magic wand and we’ll have all that sorted out for you as soon as,...by next Tuesday alright for you all? In all seriousness, I do feel sorry for aspiring bands - it really is tough out there and it’s not getting any easier. Getting support slots with named artists usually involves being, at very least, on intimate terms with the promoter and, even then, one has to generally get approval from the headline band who probably have their own idea of a support. Either that or have had a support foisted upon them already by their management company/agent/record company/whatever. And, if by some miracle one does get past these obstacles, don’t expect to get offered any fees (indeed many artists now ‘buy on’ to tours, not uncommonly involving tens of thousands of pounds) - so you better get yourselves around the country, equipment and accommodation costs included, under your own expense. Are you sure you still want to put your child on the stage Mrs Worthington? No wonder so many Brighton bands never leave Brighton.

Talking of arduous undertakings, on the 30th of August 2012, Yellowfish Music Group Director Ross McCracken, accompanied by freelance personal trainer Josie Dade, will cycle from London to the Rock of Gibraltar to launch the Yellowfish Hutchins Foundation in support of local and international charities. Wisely, Hutchins Guitars Director, Gary Hutchins, has opted for the crucial role of driving the support vehicle. Ross has kindly decided that

Could be worse, I suppose, he could have suggested we get on a bike and join in, which given that the ride covers a staggering 1500 plus miles through France and Spain, including a gruelling ride over the Pyrenees mountain range, I think we might, in hindsight, have got the better end of the deal. He now probably just expects us to raise £20,000 for him in donations...er, come back local musicians with big touring plans, all is forgiven! To be honest we are actually delighted to be involved - unpaid or otherwise - given that the Ride will support three entirely deserving charities; -The Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice http://www. chestnut-tree-house.org.uk which looks after terminally ill children, and The Clockhouse homeless charity http:// www.theclocktowersanctuary.org.uk and Drop4Drop http://drop4drop.org, an international clean water charity. Thanks to the generosity of EISL and other major sponsors, every penny will go to the charity; - no admin costs, no event overheads - and, more than that, the Foundation will buy whatever the charity needs, on a specific project basis, again avoiding any administration overheads whatsoever.
