Brighton Japan Festival 23 June – 1 July Various Venues across the city.

what’s on in june Welcome to a Jubilicious June! Patriots prepare yourselves for a nationwide party and perhaps a curtsy or two, as we celebrate our glorious Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Let’s hope she has a ma’ammoth day! As true Brits we take yet another bank holiday weekend – but who’s complaining – over the 2nd to the 5th of June so get involved in the Royal rarities happening across our city. Check out BN1’s full listings for details on what’s going on, otherwise, expect street parties and neighbourly luncheons all weekend. So not only do we have an excuse to ‘unwind’ in the pub, we also look forward to sunnier days and warmer temperatures bringing us one tan line closer to summer. Roll up, roll up in your pre-dated automobiles this June with three major motor events happening on our ever famous Madeira Drive. On the 10th, rev up your engines for the Brighton to Brooklands Car Run showcasing only pre 1939 vehicles, the Classic Car Run with cars aged over 25 years old AND the London to Brighton Kit and Sports Car Run. If you’re a motor enthusiast, you seriously cannot miss out. ‘Right here, Right now’ in Brighton’s leg of the Big Beach Bootique we also have Fatboy Slim at the palatial Amex Stadium in the first couple of days of June. Since the football players have hung up their boots during the off season, we can look forward to supporting artists including Annie Mac with DJ sets from Dubstep artist Nero and DnB pioneer DJ Fresh. With a busy month ahead you shouldn’t be finding yourself stuck for things to do, but if you do find some spare time be sure to check out BN1 magazine’s website for more details on what’s on. Get involved in this city-wide celebration of Japanese culture, bringing something a little different to the streets of Brighton. With both traditional and modern Japanese art and culture, prepare for taiko drumming, theatre-based origami to the cutting-edge sub culture of Gothic Lolita fashion and Cosplay. Expected to become the largest annual Japanese cultural festival in the UK, it’s no wonder so many of Brighton’s cafés, bars, shops, exhibition spaces, restaurants, cinemas, concert halls and theatres are taking part. www.brightonjapan.com

Picnic in the park 2nd June. Preston Park, 12-3pm Celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at one of Brighton’s beautiful parks just outside the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Bring your own picnic and enjoy the company with music from a brass band, provided by the Patcham Silver Band and Mid Sussex Brass Band, a bouncy slide, fun and games with free face-painting for the kids. So plaster on your patriotic gear, add a union jack or two and make it a Jubilee to remember. friendsofprestonpark.org

Art Deco Fair

Naked Bike Ride

The Royal Escape

10th June. Hove Centre, Norton Road. Adult ticket £3

Sunday June 10th, from 12:00pm - 4:00pm The Level, Union Road

1st June. Brighton Palace Pier

Fancy some retro gear? Haven’t got enough stashed in the cupboard? Well do we have a treat for you! In their 16th successful year, stallholders at this well established and popular art deco fair will be offering original goods from the 1920s to the 1970s. Including ceramics, pottery, figures, jewellery, fashion accessories, lamps, clocks, mirrors, household items, pictures, furniture, books and much more. Refreshments and parking included. www. decofairs.co.uk

The granny-shocking spectacle of Brighton’s Naked Bike Race returns on 10th Jun. As the name would suggest, 1,000 nude participants ride through the streets of the city to visually highlight the vulnerability of cyclists on our crowded roads and to protest against oil dependency. Starting on The Level at midday, with a spot of naked lunch, this unorthodox, but much loved, procession candidly winds its way through the centre of town. Spectators might want to hover around the Western Road area, as it’s always good for seeing unsuspecting shopper’s reactions as a huge group of shrieking naked cyclists pelt past them. The ride ends up on the nudist beach for a lovely refreshing paddle (and a chance to wash off all that funky body paint!). I’m told by several people that it’s a wonderfully liberating experience. I would take part, but I’m too embarrassed about the size of my stabilisers.

Bow your head or curtsy for the largest offshore race on the South Coast outside of the Solent. Sailing over an impressive 67 nautical miles, the Royal Escape is a mixed fleet of monohull yachts that set sail across the channel to Fécamp, on the Normandy coast, in historic celebration of Charles II’s escape across the Channel. Everybody’s welcome but first timers make sure you’re in supportive company! For more info visit www.royalescaperace.co.uk

London to Brighton Bike Ride

Big Beach bootique 5

17th June. Madeira Drive

1st - 2nd June Amex Stadium

In support of the British Heart Foundation, this amazing annual fundraising bike ride will set off from Clapham Common heading all the way down to our sunny seafront. With 27,000 cyclists expected to travel the 56 miles, the least we can do is show our support and cheer on these dedicated cyclists for a good cause. For information on how to enter and the race details visit www.bhf.org.uk, otherwise see you on the sidelines!

We mentioned the possibility of Fatboy Slim playing at BHAFC’s Amex stadium years ago. Now finally it’s going to happen on 1-2 June. What better way to celebrate the stadium’s opening (something that Mr Cook had a big hand in) than with a Downs-rocking mega-rave? Heavyweight support for the Iconic DJ comes from the likes of DJ Fresh, Carl Cox, Nero and Jaguar Skills. See you on the touchline…. www.fatboyslim.net

KOvak Killer Boots

Brighton electro-pop favourites Kovak have pulled off a major coup by becoming one of the first unsigned acts ever to be playlisted on the UK’s most listened to station, Radio 2, with forthcoming single Killer Boots. With the band off to Canada in June for the NXNE Festival, including a Saturday night performance at the legendary Mod Club, the band will be following up with a national tour in October/November with 80’s superstars Hazel O’Connor and Toyah Wilcox.

MUSIC PREVIEWS By Brad Middleton

Mojo Fins Concorde2, 13th June

Brighton Japan Festival 22nd June – 1st July

Furyon Haunt 22nd June

Another great export from our fantastically musical town returns home for the always great hometown show on this their latest tour, and what a treat awaits us. As part of their sweep around the UK in support of their new Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers) produced EP ‘The Spirit’, this is sure to be some show. Having formed and then nearly split up in 2007 after the tragic death of lead songwriter Jon Chandler the band decided to forge ahead regardless and have gone on to become one of our most under-appreciated exports. For this band it really is all about the music and not about which trend to blindly follow and it has lead them to the glories of being able to headline the C2. Next stop the Centre maybe?

This event is sure to having every Japanophile very excited and with every reason. Over eight days we get a real insight into modern Japanese culture, technology and business across a wide range of different venues. There really is something for everyone; serious aficionados of the society or just casual onlookers are sure to find something of interest here. My two personal favourites include the Taiko drum workshop in Bartholomew Square and the awesome retro-gaming events at the Marwood coffee shop on Ship Street. Best check their website for all the listings as there is literally too much to list right here. Enjoy!

For these local metal types this is sure to be their biggest hometown show yet and is sure to be a showcase for their second full-length album just released by Italy’s Frontiers Records. Their sound, which falls apparently half way between the grinding smack ridden angst of Alice in Chains and the colossal innuendo of Whitesnake, sounds like my idea of hell but hey. who am I to stand in your way. If you want to shake your main of hair around then get along to this show and do your worst!

SUNN O))) Coalition 10th June

Best Coast Coalition 21st June

Sunn O))) are probably the loudest band in the world right now and having seen their onslaught in the flesh I can testify that they made your reporter almost lose his stomach contents when he last watched them play about seven years ago. For that reason I shall not be attending this show, however if you are not deaf yet but want to be, get along to this show! Sunn O))) are the kings of doom and seen live they are a really amazing spectacle, long flowing robes and lots of smoke are the order of the day and with the music create a near-terror filled room for hours on end with their dense, slow, heavy and awe-inspiring sounds. For some this will probably be the show of the year, for others it just makes us feel old as we remember when we used to be able to handle such decibel counts.

I can still remember the first time I heard Best Coast, it was around April 2010 and it gave me goose-pimples like no other band had managed for years. The song, ‘The Sun Was High (And So Was I)’ was simply beautiful and a nigh-on perfect reflection of what the Beach Boys would have sounded like with a very-stoned Kevin Shields on guitar and a girl on vocals. It really was that amazing and it took me some time to get over just how damn good they were. Fortunately, as it turned out, it was practically impossible to track down any of their records until their debut ‘Crazy for You’ dropped in during July of that year and then it just went into hyper-bole. You couldn’t pick up a music magazine that didn’t mention them as being the ‘next big thing’ and with appearances on national US TV it seemed destined that they would go on making beautiful pop records forever but with a huge audience. Then came the bomb-shell of one bad show. Having seen them play a great set on the pier as part of the 2010 Great Escape I was really excited to hear they were due to play Coalition on the upcoming tour to promote the album. When the show came around I was eager like a little kid on Christmas day morning but boy what a let-down. Sounding almost more akin to stuff like Blink 182 than the Beach Boys I left. and it has taken me until very recently to learn to love their great debut as much as it deserves. Their new album promises better production and cleaner sounds which can only mean that this once great band have decided to clamber aboard the music industry expressway to the stars.

Jennifer left With recent airplay on BBC6 Music, the world is beginning to take notice of the unique talent of Brighton’s very own Jennifer Left. Ahead of the official release of her first EP, Black Dog on June 4th, we sent along our resident coffee and chat man Andy Hollis, to meet her and find out what’s what….

Jennifer, you’re originally a Geordie girl – what drew you to our southern shores?

wasn’t quite in that place. Did that free you up mentally a bit?

Well I was actually off to Prague with an ex of mine, but it flooded so we couldn’t get in and were stranded in London. A friend in Eastbourne then kindly asked if we’d like to stay down there. I was left by myself so decided to go and visit Brighton and ended up talking to a chugger running a campaign to Save the Badgers who gave me a personal tour, so I just kind of fell in love with it there and then. I went back up to Newcastle and said “right, I’m off” and came down to Brighton University. It’s kind of a Peter Pan land – people here never grow up. You were of course in the band Gloria Cycles who were one of the mainstays of the Brighton scene… It was amazing actually. I love them all dearly, but we ended up just really all doing our own thing. Kenny is now photographing professionally, Julia has moved up to London and Jack is in a new band – we’re all still in touch. What led to the band breaking up? It seems an all too common thing these days? Well we were kind of split in our decisions. Half of the band wanted to knuckle down and do another album, but part of me started to worry and think “I don’t want to do music” – you have to be so dedicated to the whole process, and I began to fear that if the band didn’t work that in ten years time I’d still be a part-time waitress. The band had to come before everything and I just

It did but only really because we were touring such a lot. We were signed, but we were still living out of each others pockets – that’s not a negative thing at all, but I just began to feel a bit lost. There’s this wonderful, creative scene down here for music and the arts generally. Do you think it’s uniquely difficult for bands to get noticed here? Well there is still this perception that you always have to be seen in London. There’s a bit of an exodus when a band makes it – take the Maccabees – they’re from down here but they live up in London now out of necessity it seems. I do think it’s changing though – people are getting fed up of having to go to London to do stuff. If you look at people like Create Studios and 360 – they’re all down here now and pulling people down from London. We’re beginning to dig in our heels – Brighton’s time is about to come! As a solo artist you came to people’s attention with a cover of New Order’s ‘Temptation’ – is that a special song to you? I love that song. It reminds me of Thursday night’s in Newcastle clubbing at Stone Love – I used to spin round and round on a podium completely lost in the song, so yes, it’s very important to me.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 9 ]

different? There’s a buzz now starting around the release of ‘Black Dog’ – what can we expect from the forthcoming album? I’ve never actually been a songwriter as such before, so the first song I actually wrote was Black Dog. I’m really trying to write stories with the songs. I’ve tried to think really hard about the lyrics – I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan but the songs have a pop sensibility too, with a bit of swing and skiffle beats. Lyrically both Black Dog and Hushabye reference a lot of childhood themes and fears – they all sound deeply personal – are they pulled from experiences? Black Dog is actually about my sister – she has many demons, bless her – I love her to bits but she’s crackers and has a selfdestructive streak. It’s the concept that the Black Dog is a demon that she fights. Hushabye is based on a fable – it’s about finding the way to tell someone you love them. How do you go about crafting songs as a solo artist? It’s like the postal service! Its all done via email now – Tim comes up with an idea which is then emailed to Euan and later to me to write the top line – lyrics and melody. We then go in and record. It’s all about remote writing! The female singer-songwriter genre is pretty well populated at the moment – what are you offering that’s

Ah it’s such a shame – I wish I’d actually had the confidence to sing earlier and I might have been ahead of the time a bit. They’re nice, catchy, swing based beats – it’s on trend with the female singer genre, but it’s not the big 80’s drums of a Florence. We just aim to keep writing and evolving. How do you feel about competing with the talent-show generation? We actually quite like watching the X Factor. We call it hiving – we all buzz about like bees drinking and shouting at the telly. You know people like Cher Lloyd can really sing, so good on her. Most people want to punch her in the face, but I’d like to just give her a big hug! Any other Brighton bands doing it for you at the moment? Oh I love Abby Wade, Gentleman Starkey, House of Hats and the Peppermint Beat Band.

Jennifer’s EP, Black Dog, will be released on June 4th EP Release launch @ The Blind Tiger on the 19th June Doors: 7.30pm Price: £4.00

Saturday 9th june KEMPTOWN CARNIVAL Brighton’s biggest and brightest free community street festival returns on Saturday June 9th for a daylong celebration of the rich and diverse population that makes the neighbourhood so vibrant. Showcasing an eclectic mix of entertainment from some of Brighton’s finest bands and street performers, this sprawling event provides everyone visiting BN3 with a day packed with some fine performances, community activities, an enormous range of market stalls and, as ever, some amazing food and drink. This is the second year for the rebooted festival, which originally started almost thirty years ago.

It’s core aim is to bring together the Kemp Town community in a celebration of local talent and creativity, and the area the carnival occupies has been extended to take up over a mile of the St Georges Road area. Just like last year there will be some exceptional local bands providing musical thrills for the estimated 15,000 people that’ll be flocking to the neighbourhood to soak up the electric atmosphere. Five stages have been crammed into the area, all of them programmed with an astonishingly wide variety of music styles that are aiming to appeal to a broad crosssection of the community, making the day something

that the whole local area can enjoy and feel part of. Playing on the live stages, over 25 bands will be entertaining the crowds with various musical styles ranging from Jazz to Rock to World Music. Some of the delights on offer include the mighty Kalakuta Millionaires, jump jive action from the Fat 45, the amazing Derriere and the Legendary John Crampton. Chaotic pranksters, Maco De Vaca Louca, will be bringing their wildly colourful and anarchic street theatre to the festival to keep spirits high. Some of the other attractions on offer include a spectacular mass fight, community choirs, a fashion event, break dancing, live street

art, Tug’o’Wars, fantastic Children’s entertainment, magicians, creative workshops and fairground rides. Local older people’s groups have been consulted on content and layout, plus the whole site has been assessed for accessibility, In short it seems that the Kemptown Carnival’s organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the event they put on provides something suitable for the entire community. Couple all this with a bit of good weather and a sea of smiling faces, and it will be a fabulous day for young and old. www.kemptowncarnival.com

I was once told I’ve got a good face for radio. Which is encouraging… as I’d always considered my asthma-induced heavy breathing, or my proclivity for constant swearing, would be an insurmountable obstruction to any career in broadcasting.

The Juice Breakfast Show with Dan Gasser and Foxy

I was never entirely surely what people actually meant by this phrase, so when we got a chance to visit Brighton’s very own Juice 107.2 to check out their new Breakfast Show line-up, I knew it could be a good time to find out. We get let into the Juice 107.2 studio just as Dan Gasser, Foxy and their whipping-boy/able-assistant Jonno head into the final hour of their 6-11 am show. “It’s the first time we’ve had three people in the show and it makes it sound a lot bigger,” says Foxy. “We are all mates and we do have fun in the studio.” So far the show’s been jam packed full of regular features, like their phone-ins, topical discussions and extolling the many virtues of cake. The team are well into their stride by now, effortlessly shifting between their various features, an eclectic assortment of new and classic tunes and some light-hearted banter. “If you’re having a laugh in the studio when the mikes are off, then you’ll make good listenable stuff when the mikes are back on.” says Dan. “If we didn’t get on very well, it would probably come across, even if we tried to hide it.” They’re remarkably fresh-faced and animated for three people who’ve been at work since 5.30 in the morning, acting like a well-oiled broadcasting machine, with Dan lining up the music, Foxy shifting through the mountain of messages coming into the studio and Jonno facilely deflecting his colleagues affectionate mockery of him. We’ve been planning on a dinner date since before we planned to do the show,” reflects Jonno. “But in order for this to happen we have to wait for a window in Foxy’s diary,” Dan chips in. “Which is at least two and a half

months away.” The best thing about good local radio is its ability to engage with the community it serves. Every morning the show gets an enormous response from listeners contacting the team with comments, requests and suggestions. This helps the audience feel they’ve some form of ownership in the station. Radio has shifted in recent years, people are listening to stations for their music content less and less and instead tuning in because they’ve formed a bond with the presenters. Dan is under no illusion as to how valuable reaching out to listeners can be. “Social media has really helped radio in terms of interaction, because more people are willing to write a comment under something, rather than write a letter.” The feedback they’re getting for the new show seems universally positive, with just as much praise coming for Foxy’s previous Breakfast co-host Guy Lloyd in his new slot on Drive at 3pm. As other radio stations seem to be getting dumber and dumber, it would seem that Juice 107.2 have struck gold with their new line-up for the mornings. “We just want to do a show every day that people on the school run can enjoy, but also for people on the work run who are thinking; I really don’t want to be going in today… I hate my life,” says Dan. “If we can offer them a bit of escapism for twenty minutes of their journey in the morning, then that’s all we need.” The Juice Breakfast Show with Dan Gasser and Foxy is on Juice 107.2 FM, DAB and over the internet. THEATRE GUIDE OK, look. I imagine some of you might be suffering from theatre overload recently after the hectic schedule May offered us. But there’s no peace for the wicked; June has more than enough must-see performances to keep us on the edge of our seats. The fabulous Avenue Q hits the Theatre Royal between Mon 04 Sat 09. This (not quite suitable for all the family) show features a group of puppets that have realised that, just maybe, the eternal optimism they were fed with by 70’s and 80’s kids TV shows has actually shielded them from the realities of life. This brilliantly acerbic musical does away with trying to teach kids how to count, instead focussing on revealing what the internet is really for and coming to terms that actually “everyone is a little bit racist”. Educational? Somewhat. Politically correct? Certainly not… Brilliant? Absolutely… Also at the Theatre Royal, on Tue 19 - Sat 23, the English Touring Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse present Tom Stoppard’s classic The Real Thing. A brilliant and celebrated playwright struggles, as his wife stars in his latest play which examines the complexity of love and infidelity. Reality and

fiction blur when passions ignite and their marriage becomes entwined with that of the plays co-star. The ever-reliable, hilarious Treason Show, now in a recordbreaking 12th year, hits the Ropetackle Centre in Shoreham on June 09 with an infamous mix of topical songs and satirical sketches. The Old Market pride themselves in breaking down boundaries and treading new ground, and their hosting of Definitely Theatre’s new production of Love’s Labour’s Lost on 07 - 08 June is more evidence of that. This, one of the richest and funniest of Shakespeare’s plays, will be performed in British sign language. This is reportedly the first time this has been attempted with an entire Shakespeare piece. Here Shakespeare boisterously sent up all those who try and turn their back on life, in a playfully satirical commentary on both the playwright’s era and the timeless themes of love, drunkenness, lust – and the war between men and women.

the adventure’s of pete: brighton wakeboard club Man about town Pete Bennett took little time in agreeing to take part in our new regular feature, The Adventure’s of Pete, as he realised it would be a great way to experience some of the awesome activities available in the local area. By Stuart Rolt Images by David Smith Of course we were never going to let him take it easy, so we decided to literally throw him in at the deep end in an evening session with Brighton Wakeboard Club. We meet Richard from BWC down at Brighton Marina, who tells us that they’re a non-profit making club that was set up to enable like-minded people to get out on the water and experience this exhilarating sport: “We aim to promote the sport and give people the opportunity to enjoy wakeboarding which can typically be expensive or only possible if you have, or know someone that has a boat.” As well as providing competitive rates for each tow on the water, the club provides it’s 100+ active members with a lively social scene, with many members meeting up to go kiteboarding and snowboarding also. Whilst we wait to fuel the boat (a mighty 2003 Mastercraft X2 with room for 11 people, pumping sound system, speed control systems and laden with equipment) Pete gets some jetty-side tuition from Richard. Richard: “Remember to stay in a crouched position on start and let the board find the surface. Pete: “Piece of piss!” We head out onto the sea and get to watch BN1’s editor, Chris, show off his skills, before Pete can’t put off getting into the chilly water any longer. Chris: “Apart from the usual genital reminder of the British sea temperature, it was the most exhilarating thing I have done in a long time!” Pete: “Bloody hell, how am I gonna do that? I’m probably gonna die” Pete enters the water. It’s a slow start, whenever he falls

forwards, head-butting the water at 15mph each time, we have to return to him, roll him over and line the boat up for another go. But it does look likely that he’ll pick it up, given enough time. Pete: “I can’t feel my hands! What’s going on, how do I turn over?” The realisation soon dawns that our biggest enemy is not the sea, but the cold. Pete’s already feeling tired after a long day and being dragged behind a speeding boat is really beginning to take its toll upon him. He still gives it a few more valiant attempts to stay on his feet for more than a few seconds, despite being almost too cold to hold onto the rope, so eventually we tell him to get on the boat and get himself warm. Not least because he’s starting to turn blue. Pete: “That was hard... how are you supposed to stay standing up? Fuck this!” For the rest of us it was a thoroughly enjoyable moment and an experience definitely worth trying, especially as it’s accessible from Brighton Marina. If anyone has an interest in taking up this exciting sport, Brighton Wakeboard Club will be at Paddle Round the Pier on the 7th-8th July, so drop in for a friendly chat or visit www.brightonwakeboard.co.uk Contact the Club on: 01273 601216 Watch out for next month’s antics as Pete explores something new to him, if he’s still talking to us…

rezzed These days, they’re a huge multi-billion-pound industry with product launches that dwarf the opening weekends of new Tom Cruise films and Harry Potter novels. Which is fine, but let’s be honest, it was more fun when we were all in our bedrooms. Rezzed: The PC and Indie Games Show, taking place at the Brighton Centre on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th July, will celebrate the resurgence of innovative, funny, charming, cute and crazy new video games made with that spirit, and while we can’t promise that they were all made in the lead programmer’s bedroom, some of them definitely were,

and the rest come from that same special mental place. You’ll be able to play redneck multiplayer shooter Borderlands 2 for the first time ever in the UK, see a rolling 15-minute demo of the new XCOM game, be among the first to get a glimpse of the future of the Total War series, hear from the makers of Carmageddon Reincarnation, and play independent games like Prison Architect (yes, you run your own prison), Xenonauts (inspired by UFO: Enemy Unknown) and Serious Sam 3 and many more. ARTS Fashion and the Flag Brighton Museum Fashion and Style Gallery 3rd May to 25th November Free admission

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 Olympics Brighton Museum is hosting an unusual exhibition of Union flag inspired fashion.

Featuring the work of a range of British designers, the display, according to the museum’s website, brings together clothes and accessories which use the Union flag as fabric or design inspiration. The exhibition is located in the Fashion and Style display area tucked away in the depths of the museum. This, along with the dim lighting and how the display shares the space with the museum’s permanent textile collections, creates an underwhelming first impression. On closer inspection though, it becomes apparent that the exhibition features designs by several long-standing household names and that, contrary to its modest appearance, it is more than just a space filler. At the

entrance to the display visitors are met by a striking Jasper Conran dress made from real flags. Further highlights are a tutu and shift by Vivienne Westwood, designed to celebrate the 300th birthday of Tattler Magazine, and a Union flag print Barbour jacket, one of only 13 ever produced. Other featured fashion houses include Alexander McQueen, John Rocha and Dr. Martens.

in their clothing, such as mod, punk and ‘80s pop. However, a more overall description of the fashion industry’s interpretation of nationalistic imagery, and how this has changed over the decades, would maybe enhance the exhibition’s role as a talking point for visitors.

While looking at the range of eccentric items of clothing is interesting, it does seem that the exhibition could benefit from taking a more discursive angle. There is a lack of general information, with the only text on offer being the individual exhibit captions. These nod to the various cultural movements which used the Union flag

‘Fashion and the Flag’ is based on a symbol that is laden with many different connotations, such as patriotism, monarchy, national identity, violent imperialism and xenophobia. Because of this, it seems the exhibition could also offer an interactive element, perhaps inviting visitors to enter their thoughts on what the Union flag, and its use in fashion,

means to them. Despite its shortcomings though, the exhibits themselves make ‘Fashion and the Flag’ worth a visit and, if you’re in the area, here at BN1 we recommend you pop in for a look. By Faye Morrison

FILM By Wayne Imms

RISE OF THE SUPERHEROES I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your attention that the past few years have seen an increasing amount of superhero based films reaching our cinema screens. Based on highly established comic books, fairly recent examples include Iron Man, Green Lantern and, of course, the hugely popular Avengers Assemble. Many more are on the horizon, such as this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. Brighton based Dez Skinn is, without a doubt, one of the most respected and established figures within British comic book and magazine publishing. As head of Marvel Comics’ in the UK, during the late 1970s, he oversaw many leading publications, such as science fiction and fantasy magazine, Starburst, and Doctor Who Weekly, and various comics. After leaving Marvel, he founded the acclaimed Warrior anthology, which featured key works by the legendary comic book writer Alan Moore. I asked Dez for his thoughts on superhero adaptations for the big screen. WI: As a child, I enjoyed watching the likes of Superman the Movie, as well as the rather poor Spider-Man of the late seventies and The Incredible Hulk, the film version of the television series. As well as watching those films, I used to read about them in your superb Starburst magazine, which began in 1978. To me, especially Superman, these were very special and rather delightful. Those films, which had a lot less hype than those of today, were many years before CGI. Would you agree that these were more innocent and somewhat delightful than what we get today? And what are your thoughts on CGI? DS: I feel that CGI is a double edged sword. Sure, if a film has the budget it can make crowd scenes far larger and backdrops more impressive, but it can equally have a dehumanising effect. I think we all agree that George Lucas lost the plot somewhat with his overuse of CGI which left the audience not caring whether characters succeeded or failed. It’s the small picture, the emotion, which is the key, and only actors can give that. Chris Reeve managed to convince us that nobody would believe Clark Kent was Superman because he was a great character actor, not because of an edit suite! WI: Do you feel it’s important for superhero films to be faithful to their original comic books? And which ones would you say are? DS: They are different media with different demands, different

strengths and weaknesses. To slavishly follow a print version, whether a book or comic, is to deny the advantages of film. I thought V for Vendetta worked as a film (outside of the useful royalty cheques on all those masks) because of its different ending, not despite it, yet Sin City was an amazingly faithful adaptation of the comics and worked equally well. I guess some comics creators draw film storyboards, whether they realise it or not, while others produce work and even characters that cinema cannot realistically interpret (Howard the Duck leaping to mind here!). It also helps when the comics’ creators have a willingness to work with Hollywood, to make the films better rather than the fatalistic attitude some have. WI: This summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the film series that was released ten years ago with Toby Maguire in the lead role. Then, next year, we can look forward to The Man of Steel, an updated version of Superman, a few years after the rather unsuccessful Superman Returns. Are these new versions necessary, and

shouldn’t there have just been continuations of the original film series’ instead? Are you expecting fresh and exciting elements to those characters’ stories? DS: I think the character who best sums up the importance of a reboot is Batman. At least twice, we’ve seen the character falter, following the 1960s TV series and the 1990s Joel Schumacher films. But he’s once again become one of the highest grossing franchises, thanks to updated reworked versions. Even James Bond had one of the biggest reboots for Casino Royale, while the Star Wars franchise ran out of steam for the over 18s, after the first two films. It seems odd to me that Hollywood seems almost incapable of maintaining a successful property across more than a couple of films (Terminator, Aliens, Sherlock Holmes and Predator leaping to mind this time). WI: Of course, this summer also sees the release of The Dark Knight Rises. Are you eagerly awaiting it, like so many other people? DS: I wouldn’t say “eagerly awaiting”. I still enjoy cinema, but with the exception of Prometheus, I don’t generally eagerly await much! Batman’s been on a roll with the last two films, so I’d hope it can break the rule and continue to inspire.

some beating, although I was very impressed with some of Marvel’s more recent output (Iron Man, Captain America) and their first Spider-Man and X-Men films. WI: Which, if any, superhero character would you like to see portrayed on the big screen? DS: Ah, the 1960s hippie in me would love to see Doctor Strange done properly. WI: Finally, Starburst magazine has recently returned to newsagents’ shelves across the country. How has it particularly changed since the seventies and eighties? DS: There’s an interactive iPad version that I’d have died to produce back then. But as a print magazine, life’s much easier than the old scissor and paste-up, Letraset and galley proofs approach. But from a marketing standpoint, I think it has a tougher job than I ever had. I could throw out 72,000 copies of early Starbursts and hope some would sell. Now it seems that Smiths and Tesco won’t look at anything which doesn’t have a free gift cover-mounted. Never mind the actual product; they assess titles’ quality by their “giveaways”. Insanity! www.dezskinn.com

WI: Do you have one or two favourite superhero films? DS: For me, the original Richard Donner 1978 Superman takes

paddle round the pier 7th - 8th July (hove Lawns)

Paddle Round the Pier, Europe’s largest free beach festival, is back once again on 7 – 8 July, giving its 40,000+ visitors all a chance to soak up the summer sun and maybe try something different, all in the name of a good cause or three.

By Stuart Rolt

Increasing in popularity with each year passing, attending this weekend long event is essential for anyone with even a passing interest in extreme or water-based sports. Originally founded back in 1996, the Paddle’s aim was to bring all the area’s surfers together for a social gathering and raise some money for charity. The charities the event is backing this year are: The RNLI, childhood bereavement charity, Winston’s Wish and Surf Action, a surf therapy organisation that treats former servicemen. With participants traveling from all over the planet to enter the plethora of water based competitions, which include dinghy sailing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, kayaking and good old swimming, Paddle Round the Pier is the ultimate celebration of active lifestyles on the South Coast. The action isn’t simply limited to the sea though. Up on the beach you’ll also be able to watch and participate in sports like beach volleyball, BMX, orb racing, martial arts and free-running. Back in the Paddle Village that occupies the whole of Hove Lawns, you’ll find a well-equipped kids area, the obligatory thirstquenching beer tents, stalls fulfilling your every extreme sports need and exhibitors providing anything from a friendly chat, to comprehensive advice or taster sessions. The Paddle Music Stage returns to keep the weekend’s tempo up, with as good a line-up as ever. This year’s highlights include 60′s Hip-Hop from Boy Com, Buster Shuffle and their lively Ska-pop, ethereal goodness from The Beautiful Word and the eclectic folk

punk of Wide Eyed Order. In addition everyone will be saying a big aloha to the Ukulele Stage. Don’t worry about going hungry either. Paddle’s food court will have Thai, Venezuelan, Hawaiian, Indian and Japanese cuisine as well as all the more familiar edible treats you’d expect from a top festival to appease those rumbling tummies. Paddle Round the Piers organisers are keen to make the event accessible for the whole community, so over the weekend you’ll find exceptional facilities for kids and parents, friendly and helpful volunteers staffing the event and the return of the disability beach, enabling everyone to get down to the waterside. Despite all the fabulous additions made to the festival in recent years, Sundays “Paddle Something Unusual” event is the undoubted highlight of the weekend. Here the skilled and foolhardy try to get round the West Pier in homemade watercraft of the most irrational kind, previously inclusions being aeroplanes, cranes, a bed and Tracy Island. If you fancy a cruel laugh at someone else’s expense, then the sea-worthiness trials for these “boats” at 12pm on Sunday are always good for a comedy capsizing. So get your sunglasses and get down to the Paddle. We don’t want to catch anyone not having a great time! www.paddleroundthepier.com

The dirt with Mark ede

Well, first things first. I’m in trouble with Ruth. People, trust me, this is not a place to be. Ruth is the Latest Musicbar’s enforcer and given the Latest Musicbar is my rent free unofficial Brighton office, I can’t afford to get on her bad side. You see the thing is, I happened to see a table and chairs outside Brighton Flea Market marked up at a tenner. Do I need any table and chairs? Of course not.

Did I buy them? What do you think? Given that wheeling and dealing is my East London default setting, I thought ‘I can make a profit on that’ I carried them, at some personal cost to myself I might add, down to the Musicbar for ‘temporary’ storage. I then went off touring to Devon and clean forgot all about them. Ruth, not unreasonably, wanted them moved. I was not there to move them. Ruth moved them. The chairs and table are disgustingly filthy. So much so that when I write about ‘The Dirt’ this is literally ‘The Dirt’. Ruth is not happy. Ruth not being happy is one dog house one does not want to be in. I am in that doghouse and could be here for some time. It’s a scary place dear reader, a scary place. Mind you my ‘office’, aka Latest Musicbar, has been so busy this month that if I paid any rent I’d ask for a rebate. Famous (?) actors - some bloke off Coronation Street apparently, the lovely Lynn - a 78 year old comedienne stripper from LA (not sure if the comedy and stripping are inter related), a permanent film unit, theatre rehearsals, various Brighton ‘business’ meetings (really?) and more have all been a daily occurrence during the last month. Indeed during the Great Escape I could hardly get in the door myself as the music venue became used as...well, a music venue. All day and all of the night, to quote Ray Davies (ask your Grandad!). At this rate, were it not for the Kit Kats, I’d be taking my freeloading elsewhere.

The other excitement - well, apart from the Great Escape but you’ve had your fill of reading about that, right? - is working out alongside Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd?... again, ask your grandad!) in my local gym. It’s a lovely, but cheap, spit and sawdust gym but in recent months I’ve worked out there - OK, OK, yes, I’m using the term ‘working out’ loosely - with the likes of Steve Coogan, Heather MillsMcCartney, and some bloke from something else who I need to ask my grandson about. If I had a grandson that is. As I said to Elton John only recently, it’s really uncool to name drop, but I thought you’d like to know. I should, but didn’t, have asked these noted people to donate something for the Yellowfish Hutchins Foundation charity auction. Snow Patrol, Charlie Boreman, Arthur Brown, are all involved already as are many local musicians, artists and businesses. More on that next month. ECO CORNER

This month sees the first Eco Technology Show hit the AMEX Stadium. This new, green event will showcase a range of sustainable technologies that perform a crucial role in protecting the environment and making our lives more efficient.

Eco Technology Show 2012 Alongside green gadgets, super cars, bikes and a sustainable food market, there’ll be exhibitors taking part in different zones, including Eco Build, Design, Energy, Transport, Home, Food and Lifestyle. In the lead up to this new Brighton event on the 15th and 16th June 2012, we list the highlights of what to do when you get there. Workshops and Talks Alongside the main exhibition there’ll be 27 free talks to choose from over the two days. You can learn about everything from water and waste efficiency, how many bicycles it takes to power your home and how to save money on your energy bills. You’ll also learn how to deliver a whole house retrofit, how to make your home warmer, healthier and cheaper to run and how to find the best solar deal. There is no booking for these sessions but they run on a first come first served basis! Go to www.ecotechnologyshow.co.uk for a full list of talks. Travel Zone Who knew you could get to 60 mph in just

3.7 seconds with zero tail pipe emissions? See how withTesla Motors, who produced the first electric super car in the world. The home grown British 100% Electric super car, the Lightning GT will also be there alongside the Electric Bluebird - the fastest electric car in the world that has set eight Electric Land Speed Records - the team is currently working towards a goal of 500mph. You can also see Brighton-designed and manufactured solar powered eBikes alongside other electric bikes all of which will be available to try out on the show’s test track. Other vehicles on show will be the Vauxhall Ampera, Mia, Mini, Mitsubishi I-MIEV, Nissan Leaf, Renault Twizy, BMW, SMART, the new electric Smart bike and The Electric bluebird brand new racing car that has only been seen by the public once before. Build Energy and Home Zone With fuel prices doubling every five years, over 4 million households in fuel poverty (10% of annual income being spent on heating homes) and a reduction in fuel security (we are now a net importer of energy), alternatives are needed. This zone will feature products that local businesses and the public need to retrofit to improve their building or home, demonstrating how

Eco Technology Show 15th - 16th June to reduce energy costs and ‘do your bit’ to reduce carbon emissions. Information, Education and Lifestyle Zone The Lifestyle and Education Zone will have a range of fantastic products for environmentally friendly living, education providers and networks, plus jewellery and art. Recognising that a lifestyle change is intrinsic, there will be opportunities to learn how products are made in order to make better-informed purchases and also the chance to test new technologies including solar bikes, e-trikes and Segway’s on our test track. Local, sustainable food and drink market Did you know that we have a multitude of award winning sustainable food and drink producers on our doorstep? Our market will showcase organic fruit and veg, cheese, chutneys, pickles and jams, sausages, meat, fish and pies, cakes and ice cream and of course, local beer and wine. Come and meet your local producer and try and buy the wonderful delicacies they have to offer. Also launching at the show are the Espresso Mushroom Company, who currently provide their oyster mushrooms grown on used coffee grounds to some of Brighton’s best restaurants. They’ll be selling their new home kits, allowing you to grow your very own sustainable mushrooms in 2 weeks. Smart Business Conference

Brighton’s first Smart Business Conference plays host to leading international industry figures, business leaders and politicians on 15 June. Speakers include local MPs Caroline Lucas, Greg Barker and Norman Baker. This high level conference for the private and public sector will address the latest strategies, tools, green technology products and services to support sustainable growth within business and local government. For more information visit www. smartbusinessconference.co.uk Finally - why Sussex? Brighton and Hove is the ideal location for the Eco Technology Show, with Brighton & Hove Council led by the Green Party and the UK’s only Green MP Caroline Lucas. Brighton has eco innovation in its DNA and has some of the most ecologically aware residents in the UK. With world class education, eco building innovation, a digital hub, cultural quarter, award winning local food and drink producers and voted the happiest UK City and Green Capital of Britain, Brighton was the natural starting point to showcase more environmentally aware ways of working and living to the rest of the UK. For more information and to secure your ticket to the Eco Technology Show (15-16 June 2012), go to www.ecotechnologyshow.co.uk and add the following promotional code to redeem 2 free tickets to the show BN1122. You can also buy tickets on the door on the day (subject to availability).

THE COAL SHED 8 Boyce's Street Brighton, 01273 322998 Excitedly wandering through town, I was thrilled with the prospect of visiting Brighton’s first Sussex steak house. What is especially unique about The Coal Shed is that all the beef is sourced from a local supplier at Garlic Wood Farm and actually also reared in Sussex. The beef they supply at The Coal Shed is a type of Long Horn cattle left to be reared in the wild on their estate in Sussex and is dry aged for 35 days for that intense flavour. The other massive bonus to the whole culinary experience is that the meat is cooked in a Spanish Josper Grill. When speaking to The Coal Shed’s owner Raz, former original member of the Ginger Pig team, he explained that “the Josper allows cooking at very hot and very precise temperatures over hot coals, giving the meat a delicious authentic flavour”. I opted for the reasonably priced Lunch/Pre Theatre menu at a very good £12. The very friendly waiter explained all of the dishes on the menu and I decided to opt for the braised shoulder of lamb on a bed of roasted tomato and anchovy salad to start. The dish arrived in good time and tasted delicious, the lamb was melt in your mouth and well seasoned, together the anchovy and roasted tomato complimented the lamb superbly. Catching up with Raz in between courses, he explained ‘I wanted to create something quite unique to the restaurant scene in Brighton, making this a place where people with varying budgets could visit. You have the young twenty-somethings who’ll pop in for the special set ‘minute steak and chips with a glass of wine or

beer’ offer, which costs just £10, or there are those who want a £200 bottle of red wine to accompany their Porterhouse. The restaurant’s atmosphere and decor is well executed with elegant table settings and great vibes. For the main I went for the traditional minute steak, beef dripping cooked chips and horse radish salad. The beef itself was out of this world, perfectly cooked, tender and very well seasoned, together with a unique slightly barbecued taste. The chips though, incredibly non diet friendly were yummy and the salad had freshly grated horseradish over the top which was a nice addition. I then opted for pudding... who wouldn’t when the food’s been this good? Now this was a very difficult choice as everything sounded so good. I decided to choose the pecan and salt caramel cheesecake and honeycomb ice-cream. This arrived with my espresso and I pretty much devoured the whole dish in less than five minutes because it was so so tasty. The Coal Shed is now one of my number one restaurants in Brighton, which I intend to visit again and again with family, friends and my boyfriend, as it seems suitable for all occasions and budgets. The service was fantastic, the food amazing and so a big thumbs up from me! By Bee Adamic
