OCTOBER A big hello to you, and to October as well. An even bigger hello to anyone we met at Brighton Japan, Brighton Digital and Fiery Foods UK Chilli festivals. If we met you at Shakedown, then we probably owe you an apology of some kind.

An apology we seriously should make is stating that Sept was challenging for the title of “Festival Month” in Brighton, we hadn’t really taken into account what Oct had to offer.

At the end of the month and stretching out into Nov, we’ll be sampling the very best in experimental and Art-House cinema at the 11th Cinecity Brighton Film Festival. There’ll be screens taking part across the whole City, with a few popping up in some very unusual places.

Taking us back to the roots of an art-form that unites the planet, Brighton Early Music Festival will be thrilling crowds with proto-Classical concerts at the end of the month as well.

A new visitor to Brighton is The World Fantasy Convention 2013. It seems it’s a rarity to see this event held outside of North America, so expect to see a little magic on the streets from 31 Oct - 5 Nov. As you’ve probably guessed by our cover, we’re all about the Comedy this month. Brighton Comedy Festival is here on 4-20 Oct, bringing with it 70 performances at some of the City’s best venues.

We’ve got interviews with Sean Lock, Lucy Porter and Mr Nice himself, Howard Marks. This is one of the best events of the year, so you’ll have to forgive us for getting a little bit excited by it.

But we still have just enough room for all our fantastic coverage of everything brilliant Brighton has to entertain you through Oct. Wrap up warm and don’t tell your parents everything.

BRIGHTON BREEZE Madeira Drive Sat 5 Oct The Brighton Breeze blows into the City this month, as this annual run for all Volkswagen enthusiasts fills Madeira Drive with camper vans on Sat 5 Oct. Organised by the Split Screen Van Club, founded in 1983 and dedicated to the preservation of the pre-1967 VW van, we’re promised all the VW action you can handle, in all sizes, styles and states of repair.

There’ll also be a selection of other VW machines, such as beetle cars, a caravan, and even a German Post Office van. Virtually the whole history of the VW camper van is there to be explored. www.brightonbreeze.co.uk

BEER BANQUET The Freemasons Weds 23 Oct The Freemasons on Western Road is to be the setting for Brighton’s firstever Belgian Beer Banquet, on Weds 23rd Oct. For just £35, you’ll get four sumptuous beer-riddled courses, with accompanying beers to match each dish. Additional entertainment comes in the form of the Thinking Drinkers – Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham, a beer quiz and loads of giveaways.

Brighton Early Music Festival returns on Fri 25 Oct – Sun 10 Nov. Now the second-largest festival of its kind in the UK, it challenges common presumptions about Early and Classical Music and works tirelessly to bring this form to a contemporary audience, celebrating the links it has with more modern musical genres such as Jazz, Folk and World Music.

This year’s theme of ‘Dance’ will enable the Festival to examine the very origins of music and its place in human culture and how Music and Dance have always been intimately bound together.

Attention space cadets! Would you believe it’s the 25th Anniversary of The Orb? The makers of ambient dub pop for the post club sessions (and the UK’s longest Top 40 record) are marking this, by releasing a sumptuous box set on Mon7 Oct. History Of The Future – The Island Years attempts to create the escalating rush of those acid house years when The Orb revelled in the emerging new technology to push the boundaries of sonic science, and encountered several copyright suits along the way.

The release features the singles which took them to mass success, underground rocking remixes and snippets of their trailblazing live shows.They’re also coming to The Haunt on Thu 10 Oct, so a few of you can relive that awesome The Orb experience. SAM GREY Komedia // Sun 6 Oct

Adding a canny modern twist to the classic Motown sound, modern soul-boy Sam Gray comes to Komedia on Sun 6 Oct. He’s had a lot of love during 2013, for his music at least (although he is a very good looking lad!)

His debut album Too Much Of A Good Thing did some tidy business when it was released in Feb, and quite rightly so. It’s blessed with a rich vein of joyful pop perfection, rare currency in these turgid days of seeing the charts packed with no-hopers, charismafree overnight successes and Reality Pop. Apparently his manager is legendary rock drummer Steve White, with Brendan Lynch handling the production duties. So we’ve a good-looking young lad, with a magical voice, who’s spent his time learning his craft in Northern working men’s clubs, bringing an old style of music to a new crowd. This is what UK Soul is all about.

Is it sold out yet? I hope not, I haven’t grabbed a ticket yet, I should have called someone. Why didn’t I act when I heard Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip was coming to town?

Returning after a two year absence as a touring duo, they’re hitting Komedia on Thu 17 Oct. The dynamic duo of UK Hip Hop’s new album Repent Replenish Repeat is also out this month.

Playing the game their way, they’ve remained staunchly independent, despite the inevitable major label overtures and promises of fame and glory.

Thought-provoking, observant and defiantly polemic, they bristle with the rage and dissatisfaction that only a childhood in a drab Essex town can give an artist.

Considering they properly met whilst working in HMV, they create a sound that’s near indefinable. Is it beat-heavy Lit-Pop or cerebral culture-conscious Punk Rap? Make your own mind up, if you can get in!

Machinedrum, the North Carolina-born and Berlin-based producer, flies across the many facets of Bass Music. A contender for the title of hardest working man in EDM, he effortlessly sweeps between Future Garage, Jungle and RnB, with all his engaged effort giving him a massive cult following across the globe.

Seemingly his new album, Vapor City - released last month on Ninja Tunes, is a return to the good classic concept album format. But this isn’t simply an over extending collection of noodling, with a common theme attached to justify its extravagance.

Instead it’s a series of songs inspired by a dream city, with each song representing a different district. An accompanying video is currently doing the rounds, directed by Weirdcore, it was developed from the artwork for the album and the live tour, which handily enough comes to The Haunt on Mon 14 Oct. Grab a ticket if you can.

CLEAN BANDIT Digital // Sun 27 Oct

This is Brighton, so we need to mix things up a bit (darling!)

So for starters you could be checking out the “classicoelectronical” leanings of Clean Bandit, at Digital, on Sun 27 Oct. This eccentric collective smashed into the Top 20 in March with Mozart’s House, a typically fervent mixture of deep house, hip-hop and classical music.

Based around an instrumental core of a string quartet, spacious keys and drums are brought into the fray, conjuring up memories of that classic Bristol sound. Vocalists on rotation and onstage antics for the live shows have been making them one of the “not to miss” acts this summer.

Support’s been rolling in from Fearne Cotton and Huw Stephens, they’ve also been travelling the country with Disclosure on tour and opened Alt-J for two nights at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. So best catch them now, before every hipster in town is name dropping them.

A desert Blues Band who hail from Mali, Tamikrest‘s music takes root in Ishumar Rock or Tuareg Blues. Borrowing from various indie influences, as well as from neighbouring cultures, they shine a light on the appalling living conditions of the people in the Sahara who are having their land taken by multinational companies.

Tamikerest have developed a captivating live show, which comes to Komedia on Tue 22 Oct, which will offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the Tamasheq experience, and share in its unique blend of inspiring music and strong political messages.

Driven from northern Mali by the recent domestic upheavals, they’ve been working in exile on new material, which deals with the suffering and courage of Tuareg women. Through the message of these songs, Tamikrest want to make Tamasheq poetry and culture accessible to inhabitants of a world larger than the immensity of the Sahara desert.

VV BROWN Coalition // Mon 21 Oct

Every time I play VV Brown’s debut album, the rockabillytinged Travelling Like The Light, I feel like shouting: “Ladies and Gentleman, the divine Ms VV Brown!” out my front room window.

She gets me that flipping excited.

A singer, songwriter, producer, record label owner, model, presenter, ethical fashion brand CEO and entrepreneur, Ms Brown is a seriously cool, and highly motivated, lady. After scrapping a planned second album after she didn’t feel it was right, she’s now set about moving towards a darker, more electronic sound with The Invisible’s Dave Okumu. Marrying chart-friendly hooks with pure electro-pop production values, the new LP, The Apple, is an absolute scorcher. Now she’s out on the road to bring it to the masses, dropping in on Coalition on Mon 21 Oct. If I one day get my own chat-show, she will certainly be ruling my house-band. You need people this wonderful around you. every hipster in town is name dropping them.

In homage to Howard Marks new spoken word show ‘Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe’, which tracks the four distinctly different phases of his life so far, Lucy Hallett managed to get some time to ask some questions across four distinct sections: Politics, Comedy, Country and Random.

POLITICS You are an outspoken advocate of the legalisation of cannabis. What do you make of the current drug laws in the UK? I have always thought that the UK drug laws are harmful and dangerous and that the current prohibition of cannabis, in particular, but probably all recreational drugs so far discovered, be dismantled. Prohibition is not control and should not be equated with control. Prohibition is the lack of control leading to the distribution of adulterated drugs outside the reach of the law. Legalisation of any recreational drug would be less harmful to society.

Some people have the view that political parties are ‘all as bad as each other’ while some believe that there are definite heroes and villains. Which of these camps do you occupy?

As far as the main political parties are concerned, I believe each is as bad as the other when it comes to drug policies.

COMEDY Your shows are famed for their wit. Who or what makes you laugh?

Monty Python and Fawlty Towers remain my favourite comedy programmes. I think the funniest live comedian these days is definitely Andrew Maxwell.

What’s been the funniest moment of your life so far?

One year in Glastonbury, I spent two hours trying to put on a pair of waterproof trousers before realising it was a waterproof jacket.

COUNTRY If something happened which meant you couldn’t return to England, what would you miss the most?

The language.

Which countries in the world are your favourites and why?

Pakistan for its food, scenery, and hashish quality.

Jamaica for its rum, Rastas, reefer, Reggae, and climate.

Taiwan for its Far Eastern madness.

BESTIVAL REVIEW 2013

Every year between the 5th and 8th of September the historic and picturesque county of the Isle of White becomes home to one of the most loved festival’s the U.K has to offer.

Party-people in their thousands set up camp, and prepare to kiss goodbye to the summer, albeit with some rather epic musical accompaniment. This year saw veritable musical royalty in the form of Elton John, Fatboy Slim, The Flaming Lips and Snoop Dogg, take to the stage and shake their thaaaang.

The theme was ‘HMS Bestival’, which was brilliantly appropriate… you can’t have a ship without water, and there was certainly no shortage of that! I was tempted at points to rip the boat costumes away from their owners, and test their veracity. Luckily no such harsh measures were needed, as just when feeling soggy was metamorphosing into feeling drenched the rain would usually disappear for a bit. If this is the case, then I have to conclude that the rain is no fan of Fatboy Slim, for as if by magic, when Brighton’s most famous resident appeared headlining on the Friday, the rain did a disappearing act. Fatboy was on top form, belting out an unrelenting montage of classics including the seminal ‘Right Here, Right Now’, ‘Rockafeller Skank’, and a remix of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’. I actually heard somebody say ‘Reach for the lasers, man’ without a hint of irony. In fairness, the lights, fireworks and lasers were pretty spectacular, so I’ll let that one slide.

Saturday saw the infamous Snoop Dogg take the stage to an uproarious crowd. The inclusion of his own set of lap dancing females added a bit of swagger to what was pretty eclectic performance, featuring covers of Katy Perry, House of Pain and Dr Dre. He still brought out the big guns in the form of ‘Drop it Like it’s Hot’ and ‘Who am I (What’s my name?)’. As he left the stage I have to admit his interesting set had made a bit of a convert of me. Hot Natured seemed to be the big crowd-pleaser of the day over at the Big Top, my only complaint being that somebody knocked into me and spilt my delicious paella (why I was eating paella in the Big Top still remains a mystery).

After reading all the news reports about Elton John and his health problems, it was with interest that I headed to the Main Stage (after squeezing the water out of my hair) on Sunday to watch the final headliner of the festival.

Appearing nearly as sparkly as Liberace, I needn’t have had any concerns as he breezed through ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Rocket Man’; the pinnacle of the performance being the inimitable ‘Your Song’. It’s not often that I face drizzle and downpours and still feel sad to be leaving, yet I was. I’ve been to a few Bestival’s but this one in particular seemed near-perfect. HMS Bestival, I salute you.

Packed full of erudite self-awareness, the So You Think You’re Funny? 2009 winner is ostensibly an awkward nice guy here, but it would be foolish to dismiss him as just some posh kid with stories of hanging out with the popular kids and bad seduction techniques. BRIGHTON COMEDY FESTIVAL 2013 I hope you’ve been made aware, hopefully by the hints we’ve been dropping (cover art, articles and enthusiastic previews etc), that October welcomes the return of Brighton Comedy Festival. With over 70 performances spanning over 16 days, once again this annual event will be making autumn worth living through.

There’s scores of big name acts hitting the town, for this staple of the national comedy circuit, but here’s a few of the acts we think are set to stand up and out this year.

Some of you should be familiar with The Noise Next Door in this City. The quickest wits in comedy bring their finely tuned brand of anarchy to Komedia on Mon 7, turning the most ludicrous of audience suggestions into side-splitting gags and mind blowing songs in the blink of an eye.

These stars of Radio 4’s Sketchorama and six time sell-out Edinburgh Fringe veterans, are (at last) appearing at the Festival for the first time.

Luisa Omielan asks What Would Beyoncé Do? on Tue 8 at Komedia. Whilst the answer might be: “Marry a billionaire, then release a fragrance that both sexualises and empowers”, Luisa looks to the lyrics of this modern day role-model for guidance. She’s got a hilariously absurd personal life, but she’s willing to share everything with you.

2013 Foster’s Edinburgh Best Newcomer Nominee, Romesh Ranganathan, will be livening up Komedia on Wed 9, but how can he make sense of the world, when he can’t make sense of his own house? This acerbic hour of razor sharp comedy, which blends social commentary with personal tribulations, is grabbing plaudits and award nominations all over the Isles at the moment.

The hugely entertaining Piff the Magic Dragon returns on Thu 10 in Brighton Dome Studio. He’s played Sydney Opera House. He’s toured with Mumford & Sons.

He’s had over 10 million hits on YouTube and performed to over 200,000 people in a year.

But enough about Mr Piffles (The World’s First Conjuring Chihuahua™) Piff’s back too. With brand new tricks and a mind-reading fish.

Chris Cocoron and Ellis James are the brains behind The Committee Meeting. This hilarious and Comedy gang show experience comes to Dome Studio on Thu 10. Set in a working men’s club in the Valleys, they will try and tackle the everyday issues of a working Welshman. All who attend are part of the committee and will have a point to be made. By reading this you are a member.

If you want to talk about it, then you might as well sing about it, is Vikki Stone’s attitude to life. After her smash hit, sell-out Edinburgh show, comedian, singer and musician Vikki Stone comes to Dome Studio on Sat 12.

Expect an explosive show, full of hilarious stand-up, songs, and silliness, the hilarious Phillip Schofield Song is worth the price of admission on its own.

Witty, acerbic, magniloquent Frenchman, Marcel Lucont, is all set to delight and seduce the crowd at Dome Studio on Wed 16. This comic raconteur is also a poet, philosopher and undoubtedly a highly proficient lover. Dressed like a he’s off for a debate on the Left Bank and clutching a glass of red wine, he’ll be reinforcing a few old preconceptions we have of our Gaelic cousins.

The incredible Abandoman have been cutting a truly original path between rap music and comedy for several years, but now they’re stepping up their awardwinning game. Described as ‘Flight of the Conchords meets 8 Mile’, they’re now performing as a full band, using the history of hip-hop as their blueprint, and you as their inspiration on Thu 17 at Dome Studio.

The edgily named Steve Hughes: While It’s Still Legal comes to Corn Exchange, on Sat 19, so Mr Hughes can deliver more thoughtful, outspoken social commentary. A masterful, erudite and provocative performer he’s on a mission to prove that Comedy really is the new Rock and Roll... BY STUART ROLT When we heard comedian Sean Lock had moved to the leafy climes of Lewes, we thought he’d give us some quality quips about Brighton’s ‘less sophisticated’ neighbour.

Unfortunately he wasn’t going to give us the cheap laughs at the expense of one of Sussex’s more abstruse towns. “I don’t want to say too much, as I live there,” our October cover star tells me over the phone.

Although he’s a mainstay of the panel shows, and his Stand-Up shows garner enthusiastic reviews from all that see them, are there any plans to return to a sitcom environment, where Lock’s absurd mind can truly run wild? The show he wrote last decade, Channel 4’s 15 Storeys High, was elegant evidence of what he can craft with enough time and money.

At this point I realised that, despite being one of the most recognisable faces in UK Comedy, there’s not much the public knows about Lock’s private life. The mild-mannered mirth merchant steadily appears regularly on TV shows like Have I Got News for You, QI, They Think It’s All Over and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, but he makes little reference to his home and family. “I’ll talk about having kids, but not directly about anything that’s happened. I create my own world and reality, I don’t talk about my own life. I like writing jokes really, not talking about things that happened on the bus. I’m not dismissing people that do that, because some of them do it very well.”

“The last one was 2004. It was a very well-made piece of work, that’s why it took up so much time. I’ve had three kids since then, so that’s one of the reasons I haven’t, because it takes so much of your time up. I might do in the future, but I like to focus on what’s in front of me. What happens is… you plan something, and then you have to go and bloody do it. I might at some point do another series.

It’s something I’d like to go back to, I know I can do it, but it’s ‘Do I want to go through all that graft?’ It’s a lot of work… to do a good one anyway. To do a shit one actually, people have still worked really hard on those. When you go and see a film and think ‘That was shit!’ you have no idea how much of a chunk of someone’s life was involved in getting that thing made, just for everyone to go ‘Shit innit?’. To make a good one is that much more work… and shit ones are a lot of work. So it’s quite a commitment, you have to sit down and think about it. I’m not flippantly going to say yes.”

This month he’s making the short trip down the A27 to take part in the Brighton Comedy Festival, with new show Purple Van Man. Featuring his trademark odd, but perfectly timed, humour the show is attracting some glittering reviews as it wanders round the country. “It’s gone very well, mustn’t grumble. That’s as good as I get at publicity. I’m not the world’s best publicist. But it’s being recorded for a DVD at the end of September at Hammersmith Apollo. It’s a great theatre. It feels like quite a special venue every time I play it.”

Like any self-respecting comedian, he’s called in on Edinburgh during the festival this summer, but it seems popping up there for August isn’t as vital as it used to be for Lock. “Without sounding self-important, I don’t really need to do it anymore. I’ve got kids, I like having summer off and it’s really a place to get your name bandied about and get people to take notice of you. But I’ve been around quite a while now, so I don’t really need to do that. I did a couple of nights there at the start of the festival, but I wasn’t really part of it. I used to go up there to have fun. I didn’t really take it very seriously for a long time. But I don’t fancy that, I’d rather have a holiday.”

BY STUART ROLT Lucy Porter’s been a little quiet for the last couple of years.

A husband and a couple of kids have appeared in her life, but is this going to affect her on stage persona of a hapless, but unswervingly optimistic, singleton? We caught up with her to find out.

“I suppose it’s given me a healthy perspective on career issues”, she tells me, taking my call whilst dropping off some dry cleaning (the previous night’s corporate gig outfit being stained with “red wine and tears.”)

“I take myself a lot less seriously than I used to before.

Not that I was ever massively ambitious, but I’m certainly a lot less career focussed than I used to be. I don’t really talk about them (her children) much in the shows, because they’re too young to be particularly interesting, but as they get older and they’re easier to embarrass I’m sure I’ll find a way to incorporate them into my routines.”

As you’d expect from any UK comedian, she’s been hanging out in the shadow of Castle Rock for most of August, at Edinburgh Festival, doing gigs and covering the Comedy comings and goings for The Telegraph. “It was delightful, but it was a month’s working holiday with the kids. It was fun, but different from how it used to be. I used to be up till six in the morning, drinking and carousing. Now I’m up till six in the morning with children. I did stay out one night until two, which is pretty Rock and Roll by my standards these days. That’s shocking for a mum. But I did feel better than in previous years when I could drink more.”

So is Porter’s home life a non-stop domestic whirlwind, peppered liberally with pithy and inventive one-liners?

“We are incredibly dull people, which is good, because I think it would be very tiring if we were trying to make each other laugh all the time.”

So do her friends think she’s funny? Is it a laugh-a-minute to hang round Lucy Porter, with her endless procrastination, and less than salacious tales of her love life? Surely they all thought she’d be destined for a glittering career making rooms full of strangers laugh? “Not at all, they were all absolutely horrified. When I said I was going to do stand up, all my friends were really scared. They said: ‘You’re not funny in real life.’ I have to say I keep it all for onstage, I’m a funny writer, some comedians are just clowns and they have funny bones, where I’ve had to work at it.”

Natural talent or not, the amplified onstage version of herself, when it’s busy unleashing droll enhanced anecdotes of the commonplace, is incredibly charming.

But often when she’s at her funniest is her interactions with anyone that looks interesting in the audience. “I like a chat in life generally. I think it’s a waste, if you’ve a room of people in front of you, not to talk to them or engage. I might as well send a DVD to the venue and stay at home with the kids”.

Revealingly, as I’m shuffling through my stock questions, she tells the last night mare she had was about an upcoming bout of spring cleaning. “I’m the least domesticated person in the world. I’ve been waking up in a cold sweat, after dreaming about putting things into boxes and not being able to fit them. It’s really mundane. It’s one of those awful nightmares when you think: ‘that was so stressful, yet so boring.’ I’d much rather be dreaming about being chased across Pampas grass by Vikings.”

I couldn’t let any good Croydon girl go without talking to her about Purley Way, the retail mecca built on the site of the old London Airport. When did she last get to visit the one road in South London that caters for every shopping desire the heart can conjure? “Last Thursday. It’s always a joy. I was in IKEA. This is my dream... to be able to do my weekly shop in there. It was my daughter’s first experience of the IKEA ice cream machine. I think that she wants to live there. In fact we could just live there. There you go. That’s my dream.”

FRESHER’S GUIDE TO BRIGHTON...

BY LUCY HALLETT So you’ve just finished your A Levels, or if you are a mature student, these are a long-distant and probably somewhat unpleasant memory. You’ve probably spent the summer in a haze of Bulmers, pub gardens, and hangovers. Oh and daytime TV… let’s not forget the simple pleasure of lying horizontally, watching some nitwit over-cook a chicken on ‘Come Dine With Me’. Just because you’re starting uni, this doesn’t have to change, in fact you’ll find that this little routine is one that becomes quite familiar. You’ll soon learn that you can write a pretty decent essay while fighting a hangover the size of Kentucky. Damn - drinking, going out, stuffing your face and doing the bare minimum possible work is all part of the uni experience, so hopefully this guide is going to show you how to get the most out of your time ‘studying’.

Firstly I would like to congratulate you on choosing to go to a University in or around Brighton. If we were passing a Burger King, I would run in and get you one of the cardboard crowns, because let’s face it, you deserve one… you don’t get a burger though, I’ve eaten that I’m afraid. I may be a little (or a lot) biased, but I genuinely believe that you couldn’t have chosen better - Brighton is cool, kooky, vibrant, arty and awesome, oh so awesome. But like every City, some places are better than others.

In that vein, we should start with the good places to have a tipple (or eight). The Prince Albert, located at the top of Trafalgar Street (just down from Brighton station) is a bit of an institution. You may have heard of it in relation to the Banksy ‘Kissing Coppers’ that adorn its wall, and there is now a large mural of deceased musical heroes which draws admiring gasps. It’s known for being a music pub, and regularly stages gigs upstairs, often with a rock/punk vibe. Just over the road you’ve got The Green Door Store, a small, edgy little club that holds a mixture of DJ nights and hip bands, and is pretty much always free-entry. The Hobgoblin on London Road and the Mash Tun on Church Street are both great pubs that offer really good NUS deals.

Put simply, these places are as cool as Marlon Brando, in a flash car, surrounded by ice cubes.

It may well be the case that you’ve arrived in Brighton with a great wardrobe of funky threads, in which case bravo for being so organised. The likelihood, however, is that what seemed cool a while ago is now nestling on your floor next to plate that has grown several new forms of life. If it’s clothes you are after, then you are most certainly in the right place. The North Laine is littered with second hand shops such as ‘Days Gone By’ which sell colourful, retro clothes at decent prices. If you are a guy then there is ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘Flawless’ which both sell cool t shirts/jeans etc… For the ladies ‘Sugarhill Boutique’ is the clothing equivalent of finding out you’ve got an extra hour in bed.

If you are anything like me, then all this shopping will have made you pretty darn hungry. You should probably rest your weary legs and fill your tummies with some tasty food. Pompoko, located on Church Street, also in the Lanes, is a very good value Japanese restaurant. The mains are around a fiver, with starters for around £2.50. It’s also got a ‘bring your own booze’ policy, so for a small corkage fee you can guzzle drinks to your heart’s content. For all you veggies there is a really nice vegetarian pub called The Prince George, on Trafalgar Street, which is famed for its all-veggie menu and has won countless awards over the years.

You’ll almost certainly want to go clubbing in the evenings at some point, but these nights out won’t break the bank as there are loads of cheap student deals. Most of these clubs are dotted along the seafront, and offer music for every taste. The Volks and Concorde have a distinctly Drum and Bass, cool vibe, whereas you’ve got the bigger clubs such as Coalition and Digital that offer cheap drinks promotions, and a larger space to embarrass yourself: With all the drinking and trying to pull, there will be some red faces in the morning- guaranteed. If you want to arrive at that shameful feeling even more quickly then I would suggest a trip to the famous West Street. It’s the sort of street whereby if you avoid being vomited on or getting in a fight, then it might be time for me to run into Burger King again and get you another cardboard crown. You might be lucky, you might just get an STD, and if you do, then take yourself up to Brighton Station and visit the clinic.

STD’s aside, the most important thing to remember is that you are about to embark on what will be the best time of your entire life… well… unless you become an astronaut of course, which would probably beat uni. So unless you become an astronaut this will be the best time of your entire life, remember to enjoy it.

POPCORN IN A PUB

Relatively recently, Brighton has seen various regular film nights springing up. Catering to the city’s many film lovers; they see opportunities for classic and cult favourites to be seen in a wide range of locations. Growing in popularity is Screen Shack, which takes place each week at Western Road’s Temple Bar. The brains behind it is Hayley Tanner.

Screen Shack is an excellent way of sharing her passion for film, when not showing her strong commitment to supporting Spurs. Here, Hayley tells us of her popular film night and of her interest in the great medium.

Why and when did Screen Shack come about?

I started Screen Shack (upstairs at The Temple Bar) last January – City of God was my opening film. I’ve always been extremely passionate about film and wanted to create a relaxed environment where people could come and watch films in a more socially friendly environment (and enjoy a drink or two!). Anyone who has been to Thailand in particular will know that most bars show films and I guess that was the initial vibe I was looking for.

How do you select the films that are screened? Is there any kind of criteria?

I began by having themes, for example, January was ‘gangster month,’ but I quickly realised this was quite restricting. The film choices are quite self-indulgent on my part! However, I am always open to suggestions. Each month, I try to ensure that I include an old classic (70’s or earlier) and a recent release from the last couple of years.

Have there been any particularly popular films so far?

Goddard’s A Bout De Soufflé (Breathless) was my first screening to have over thirty in attendance, but there have been a number of films over the last few months to reach those numbers – such as Drive, A Streetcar Named Desire and Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers.

Can you describe the vibe of these screenings? Is there a particular atmosphere gained by such intimate gatherings of film fans?

It’s a very informal, relaxed and friendly atmosphere at

Screen Shack. I get a real mixed crowd of all ages and nationalities as well. Some people come with groups of friends, but I also have a lot of people attending on their own which is great, as they get to mingle with fellow film fans.

Back in July, your screening of the original King Kong was accompanied by a live DJ soundtrack – how did that go?

It was a real success! We had a packed house and the live soundtrack produced and performed by Spatts was excellent. I was extremely impressed and look forward to more from him in the future. I’m a huge fan of live soundtracks, having seen a number of them over the years (namely The Battle of Algiers, Run Lola Run, This is England, Dead Man’s Shoes, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Mother India and La Haine); I feel it really brings the emotion of the film alive.

Do you occasionally have other extra special elements to accompany the screenings in any way?

I open an hour before each screening and serve ice cream shakes, including the popular Screen Shack spiked shack which contains Baileys, Vodka and Tia Maria! I sell fresh popcorn with a choice of sugar, salt, Cajun, paprika or cinnamon. I also offer optional annual membership for only £10, which gives discounts on these and other selected bar drinks downstairs.

Do you have any personal favourite films or genres?

I always struggle with this question because I find it so hard to choose any one particular film when I enjoy so many different genres and different moods draw me to different films. I think anyone who knows me (and you may have picked this up from my Screen Shack listings!) would say that there tends to be a dark theme running through my choices! I like such a wide spectrum – it could be anything from Russ Meyer’s Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Fukasaku’s Battle Royale to Kassovitz’s La Haine or Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. I love gangster films too, from Angels with Dirty Faces, Mean Streets, The Godfather trilogy and Scarface, to more modern classics such as Goodfellas,

Donnie Brasco, Mesrine, Infernal Affairs and, it goes without saying, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I’ve been able to screen some of my favourite British films at Screen Shack, such as Get Carter, Dead Man’s Shoes, Nil by Mouth and Tyrannosaur. I’m also drawn to a lot of French and Asian cinema too, as well as certain directors; for example, Takashi Kitano (Violent Cop, Zatoichi), Jacques Audiard (Rust & Bone and A Prophet) and early Luc Besson (The Big Blue, Nikita, Léon). Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan) really stands out for me as well and I’ve already screened two of his films at Screen Shack. Most recently, I’d say Gareth Evan’s The Raid and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive are two stand-out films of the last few years for me.

What does film mean to you, and what comes first for you – films or football?

Being a lifelong Spurs fan that’s a tough one! My screenings are on Thursday nights too, so I had hoped we would make it through to the Champions League this year, but annoyingly we’ve ended up back in the Europa League playing on Thursday nights again! I think I can definitely say, though, that I spend more of my spare time immersed in my first passion, namely film. Film affects me in many different ways; it’s a form of conscious dreaming. It can serve as escapism and inspiration on so many different levels.

How aware are you of Brighton’s filmmaking community, which it’s rather known for, and various other venues for audiences?

Yes I’m aware that Brighton does have a large filmmaking community which is great. I was recently involved in a friend’s cool little short film project, I Heart Chair, which they filmed locally on a micro-budget. We are fortunate to have two Picturehouse cinemas in town, which screen art-house and less mainstream films. I’m really pleased that they’ve managed to keep their independent identity, despite being acquired

by Cineworld last year. I’m actually a member of all of the cinemas in Brighton and regularly attend double screenings – I’ve even been known to watch three films at different locations on the same day! I love the smaller venues in town too, such as The Basement and hope to have the opportunity to run a venue like that at some point in the future. They had a really good JG Ballard night there last year, showing various interviews and footage around the venue, as well as a rare screening of his (pre-Cronenberg) 1971 short film adaptation, Crash.

THE GREEN MUSE

We all know the feeling of excitement that accompanies a lovely post-work/pre-going out drink. I have my favourites- Gin, Red Wine, Cava and Champagne, not all together, well not since that raucous night in 2008 anyway, but I’m a creature of habit and tend to stick to what I know. So imagine my trepidation at being asked to sample Absinthe, a drink that I’ve only ever tried once, and even then, can’t remember how it actually tasted as I was already full of ouzo (don’t ask).

Absinthe has rather a strange sort of reputation. I have to admit that I had long been labouring under the false understanding that it all tasted rather similar, was always a radioactive green colour, and was generally consumed by 22 year olds in Faliraki as a pre-cursor to a bunk-up behind the kebab shop. Entering The Green Muse on York Place opposite St Peter’s Church, Brighton’s one and only Absinthe Bar, I was surprised to see that the bar was a warm and inviting pale green, tastefully decorated, and not a flashing light or disco ball in sight.

I was greeted by the lovely Jamie, owner of the bar, who told me that bringing absinthe to Brighton appeared as an epiphany, while drinking the stuff in The Floris Bar in Brussels. This desire to be different extends to other drinks, for as well as stocking a large and varied selection of Absinthe, The Green Muse also stocks speciality Belgian, German, and American beers, along with all the usual mainstream favourites you would expect to find in any drinking establishment.

I was getting almost nervous at the thought of drinking something that I had so infrequently tried, and was shocked when he produced a couple of beautiful absinthe

glasses… where were the little shot glasses? Jamie smiled at my question: ‘If you drink strong Absinthe from a shot glass you will burn your throat. Absinthe should be drunk in the proper way’. He measured a large shot’s worth into the glass, then balanced a slotted Absinthe spoon on top, on which he placed a sugar cube. Next to this was a tiny jug filled with water. There was something so grand and classical about the process that already my fears were allayed.

I tried some ‘Mansinth’ (£6.45), Marilyn Manson’s own brand, which rates at 66.6% proof, and some Esprit Edouard at a whopping 72% proof. What surprised me was how delicious they were. The Esprit Edouard was more pungent, but incredibly smooth; the Mansinth had a sweeter more easy-drinking nature. Both had a fantastic aniseed flavour, and were genuinely a pleasure to drink. The Green Muse has popular open mic nights every Saturday, folk nights every other Wednesday, and Blues nights every other Thursday, and has a very ‘happy hour’ between 4 and 8pm every day where a whole load of spirits, beers, ciders and wines are only £3. I was so impressed with Jamie, the bar, and most importantly how much I loved Absinthe that I’ve already arranged to go back this week. I would implore those of you that haven’t yet checked it out to do so before I drink the bar dry.

I like hype, I really do. There’s nothing like a good ol’ media frenzy to get the juices flowing… any ‘Breaking Bad’ fan will surely testify to this, and rarely has the opening of a new restaurant created as much hype as the arrival of Meat Liquor on York Place. Their other restaurant is located just off Oxford Street in London, and seeing as we are affectionately dubbed ‘London-by-the-sea’ if they’ve got one, then why the hell shouldn’t we?

Me and my companion wandered in on Friday around 5pm. I was surprised to see that it was unusually busy for the time of day, and happy to smell some rather nice things emanating from the kitchen. It is hard to describe the décor without getting a wee bit excited. Black and white trippy, funky murals cover every square inch inside of the Brooklyn-style eatery. Pink and orange neon lights create an almost nightclub feel, and as if the point wasn’t quite made, a massive yellow installation declares ‘SIN’this is definitely a place where you leave your stresses at the door.

We sat ourselves at the large bar which acts as a silver, snazzy centrepiece to the restaurant, and were greeted by Ehren, the bar manager. It wasn’t long before conversation had diverted to Ehren’s interesting name…. ‘Ehren’s nothing, my brother’s called Aslan!’ he cheerfully tells us. Thinking that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and clearly Ehren must have ‘cool’ pulsing through his veins, I let him recommend some drinks. We started with a ‘Pickleback’, which comes with its own tagline ‘wrong in all the right ways’. The shot of Bourbon, chased by a shot

of pickle juice, yes, pickle juice, was phenomenally weird, but crazily it worked. He then expertly (and incredibly quickly, even for a mixologist) threw together a Space Gin Smash cocktail (£7.50) which was refreshing, sharp and moreish. Fearing that I would soon be too tiddly to give the food a fair hearing we sat down at one of the large glass tables, noticing for the first time the eclectic mix of music- sometimes Hip Hop, sometimes Reggae, sometime Rockabilly- Like the ‘Pickleback’, it shouldn’t work, but ostensibly it does.

We were looked after by the beautiful Alice and Gabriel, who were helpful, cheery, and gave us some good recommendations. We opted for the Phili Cheesesteak (£8), The Dead Hippie (£8), and a portion of plain fries to share (£3). Everything is served in a fast-food style, so you have a tray piled with the food. The Dead Hippie double burger was tasty- particularly the sauce which was heavy on the pickles, and cut through the intensity of the meat. The Phili Cheesesteak was rich with cheese, had some really tasty, crunchy green peppers, and was very generous with the steak; unusual for these recessional times that often see expensive ingredients scrimped on.

Normally I object to French Fries in a restaurant, but with the meat-heavy menu, the crisp, thin potatoes work well.

By the time it came to finishing up, the place was rammed, and as we left a queue was beginning to snake down the street. It seems that Meat Liquor have another hit on their hands, just don’t say anything if you see a red-haired girl covered in burgers and jumping on a sign that says ‘SIN’.

Being a long term Seven Dials resident I get to see some interesting things. Recently they’ve consisted of people going absolutely ballistic about the road works and subsequent delays… the man that got out and kicked his own car in frustration was a personal favourite. There was also the all-day-all-night-vigil concerning the old tree that was due to be chopped down, but saved by residents.

The Dials is a pretty cool place to be, and I often overlook some of the pubs only slightly further afield.

Until my visit, this would have been true of The Hampton, positioned a stones throw away from both The Seven Dials and Western road, on Upper North Street. It’s the sort of pub that would be absolutely perfect in the autumn and winter as it whispers ‘Look at my lovely red walls, I have exposed brick, and wooden tables and I’m cosy, oh so cosy…. Light my fire, go on, I’ve got a real fire’.

It has undergone a re-launch recently, and now specialises in meat and beer; an awesome combination. As David, pub aficionado told me, ‘You can get the same selection of Bulmers and the like everywhere, so we are trying to do something a bit different. We’ve listened to what the customers want.’ This doesn’t mean that the classics are gone, but there is also a large selection of carefully chosen Boutique Beers as well. David, however, has taken this one step further by introducing Boutique Burgers- a selection of meaty lovelies that are infused with these beers, and provide the perfect culinary accompaniment.

I opted for ‘The Really Deer Burger’ (£11.00)- Venison infused with the Belgian Mort Subite Kriek, a cherry beer, and topped with streaky bacon. My dining companion went for ‘Black and Blue Burger’ (£10.50)- 100% steak infused with the Czech Krušovice Cerne, and topped with blue cheese and beetroot relish. These both came with a large portion of chips, ketchup and homemade mayonnaise. The chips were thick cut, crispy and out– of–this–world amazing. The mayo was so good I asked for some more, but the burgers were really something.

The cherry flavour of the beer worked perfectly with the strong meaty venison. I accentuated this further by enjoying a bottle of the Mort Subite Kriek (£4.90) with my meal. My companion’s steak burger hugely benefitted from the Krušovice that permeated the meat; the earthy beetroot relish and blue cheese complimenting this perfectly. He too opted for a pint of the Krušovice (£4.70) to enjoy alongside the meal, again commenting that this adds such a fantastic dimension. I love the way that David has amalgamated the act of eating and drinking, and it is safe to say I’ll be taking those few extra steps to The Hampton.

PINK FRINGE

Pink Fringe are lighting up this month with a couple of interesting additions to their ever innovative calendar.

On Sat 19 - Sun 20 Oct, and produced with The Basement, Walking:Holding is an interactive performance that leads you along a carefully designed route through Brighton in the hands of local strangers.

A woman with a shaved head takes your hand in a station.

A large man dressed in black leads you down an alley. An Indian woman holding a rose greets you outside a pub. A six-foot drag queen walks you past a church. A hooded youth puts his arm around you as you sit together on a bench. A white haired woman hugs you good-bye as you leave. Walking:Holding is a one-on-one walk through town, in the hands of strangers. It is a gentle meditation on intimacy, sexuality, difference and acceptance.

Conceived by Rosana Cade, this work has been shown extensively throughout the UK, and secured the Athena Award for this Glaswegian artis,t whose work and research is firmly rooted in a queer discourse On Thu 24 Oct The Basement plays host to the UK premiere of Transgender Seeking… This funny and tender look at queer relationships sees protagonist Jimmy trying to quit romance, so he’ll never get hurt again. Since his break-up, he’s pretending to be fine, but is secretly seeking solace in romantic black and white films. There’s run-ins with the

polyamory police, online dating mishaps, and depictions of how relationship scripts and bigger political systems like policing and prisons affect interpersonal relationships in queer communities (and beyond). It is a hilarious confession of a queer romance-a-holic.

PinkFringe is a Brighton-based producing organisation that supports and promotes Queer and LGBT performance. By producing theatre, cabaret, comedy, dance, immersive art and entertainment, they offer an exciting and ambitious programme of live performance throughout the year.

Launched in 2010, Pink Fringe are committed to the ongoing development of artists making work within the Queer sector and run commissioning projects and development schemes to support this. Their first programme showcased a vibrant selection of work, from established companies and performers like Bette Bourne and Neil Bartlett, and from within Brighton’s LGBT community, as part of Brighton Fringe.

The organisation has gone on to present successful seasons of work within Brighton Fringe in 2011 and 2012.
