EDITOR'S MESSAGE:
Scientists are examining if a trio of rocky planets, all circling a sun 235 trillion miles away from Earth (mere steps in galactic terms), could be capable of supporting life. We’re a long way from establishing that these worlds around TRAPPIST-1 host flourishing societies, but it’s a helpful reminder of the irrelevance of the vapidity and idiocy which bombards us daily. Imagine a planet where no-one has heard of alternative facts, Joey Essex or Little Mix’s Shout Out to My Ex. Our own world is seeing a golden age for the vocal, inane, and mean-spirited. Perhaps discovering we’re not completely alone in the universe could be the thing which finally unites mankind, and maybe even encourage our endeavours to be a better species.

Swallowsfeet Festival Fri 24 - Sat 25 March
www.swallowsfeet.com
Brighton’s Swallowfeet Festival for independent dance celebrates its fifth year this month. Taking place between Fri 24 - Sat 25 March at The Old Market, it’ll showcase a snapshot of current contemporary dance. The shows have been curated by The Swallowsfeet Collective, a group of eight artists, choreographers and performers. They’re of five different nationalities who are living and working in six different cities. The team are Sivan Rubinstein, Rosa Firbank, Jessica Lea Haener, Gordon D Raeburn, Harriet Parker Beldeau and Jessica Miller. The festival pulls together exceptional dance from all over the world, performing physical reactions to social issues such as gender, sexuality and identity. It showcases nine works carefully curated from 280 applicants from all around the world. Friday sees Germany’s Marc Phillip Gabriel present Ajima. This performance combines voice work, installation, video and architecture from the perspective of dance and movement. The Berlin-based performer stages a character that moves between real and fake, private and public. Saturday plays host to Un/Dress, a show by Masako Matsushita from Italy. She is a dancer and choreographer who has shown her work in multiple venues and festivals around Europe. Her artistic work enquires into the presence of the body and her show is a metaphorical performance that comes from the fusion of subject and object. Iain Payne and Gabriel Moreno present their first collaboration The Howl Of The Old Leopardi. The pair from Gibraltar head on a quest for artistic voice, showing a partnership between poet and dancer, the connection of spoken word and movement.
Beer & Brew present: Brighton Beer Tour Sat 25 March
www.beerandbrew.co.uk
A day out that involves wandering around Brighton and drinking beer what could be better? Enjoy three hours of discovering the heart of the city’s pubs, learning about the history and, of course, drinking beer. The tour stops at plenty of different watering holes, from a fisherman’s inn, a fashionable pump house, some favourite student hangouts and sustainable craft breweries. Beer & Brew even claim the afternoon is enjoyable for people who don’t like beer! The team behind the tour also run tastings, courses and private events (eg stag and hen nights), as well as providing consultancy for pubs and restaurants to help them choose the best bottles to go with their menu. They have previously run industry meet ups and an Introduction to Beer course, but this will be their first tour. The tour will be run by Beer & Brew founder, Robert Parker, who is a beer sommelier - one of only 150 in the world, and the first in Sussex. He will share his knowledge of brewing and his passion for tasting!

SICK! Festival returns to Brighton Mon 20 - Sat 25 March www.sickfestival.com
SICK! Festival returns to Brighton after a year break from the city. The event is a celebration of international arts programmes, using perspectives from academic research, medical experts, charities and first-hand accounts of people who have lived through the issues the art addresses. They strive to bring art to the heart of the communities where the subjects matter the most. SICK! Creates a shared space for experiences, reflection and connection. They face difficult topics of conversation in ways that are unflinching, informed and humane. 20 events come to Brighton this month to highlight the physical, mental and social challenges of life. They will include participatory public arts projects, documentary collections and dance performances throughout the city.
inflicted on them by adults. It explores how the audience reacts to them acting out scenes of violence and romance and what that says about the audience's own fears and desires. Director Milo Rau and his International Institute of Political Murder have performed on the biggest international stages in recent years with their political theatre. The performance is based on testimonies and reconstructions of true stories, attempting to break through the taboos of the time. After the show, there will be a post-show discussion with Lyn Gardner of The Guardian and members of the cast. The performance will be on Thurs 23 March at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Falmer.
An installation not to miss is Before I Die. It’s a participatory public art project that invites people to contemplate death, reflect on life and share their personal aspirations. Creator, Candy Chang, lost someone she loved and channelled her grief and depression into covering a crumbling house with chalkboard paint and stencilling it with “Before I die I want to…” Chang invites people to write their inner most feelings on the wall, revealing longings, anxieties, joys and struggles. The project has been created in over 70 countries all over the world. The installation is in Jubilee Square until the end of March.
To Belong is a dance performance by Theater Stap, a professional theatre company creating performances where people with learning disabilities can take centre stage. To Belong is about solidarity and what it means to be part of a group. It explores what brings people together and what connects them, whether it’s meditating or dancing. It discovers what causes people to care about one another and why they feel connected. The actors portray the experience of being a member of a group using both pedestrian and poetic movements. There will be a post-show discussion lead by Dr Jason Price of University of Sussex with Jonathan Meth of Goldsmiths University. The event will be at the Attenborough Centre on Mon 20 March.
One of the festival's performances is Five Easy Pieces, directed by Milo Rau. Within it, seven children explore the emotional and political absurdities of the adult world. It asks how children can understand empathy, loss, subjection, old age and the horrors sometimes
The festival won the prestigious EFFE Award in 2015, an accolade that rewards the 12 most outstanding European festivals. It reflects the organisation’s quality, innovation and international reputation as a leader in the arts, health and wellbeing.
Finally. After a long, cold winter, spring is here. The days are longer, the mornings are lighter and we’re full of pancakes – what’s not to love? Let me start you off. Somehow, Trump is still President of the United States, each week revealing a new chapter of some warped Orwellian reality show where the world – the real world, as in the one we actually live in – is increasingly subjected to the doublespeak nonsense of its Tangohued overlord. So far, each week has seemed progressively worse than the last, with no sign of it letting up. Soon there’ll be adverts on TV of a Trump-faced Godzilla wreaking havoc over Washington DC, a James Earl Jones-esque voiceover seductively declaring the show’s tagline, “What Will He Do Next? Tune in to this week’s episode of White House Nightmares”. Hopefully, the ratings will drop enough for them to implement a twist (read: impeachment). Congress, if you’re listening, and aren’t exactly sure about how to go about this, it’s as simple as a line from Trump himself: “You’re fired.” Across the pond, our government still hasn’t quite figured out quite what we’re doing with Brexit. On the one hand, at least we haven’t sworn to build a wall to separate ourselves from, say, Scotland. But that’s not to say they’re not planning to build one to separate themselves from us (come to think of it, that Nicola Sturgeon’s been quiet lately hasn’t she?). As a student, I’m genetically programmed to get mad at absolutely everything (how else am I supposed to procrastinate? Fluffy bunnies? Oh wait). But it doesn’t take deadlines or university to implement critical thinking – particularly at a time when everything is going to shit. To top it all off, we lose an entire hour of sleep at the end of the month. FFS.

NEWS The Big Lemon Bus goes solar www.thebiglemon.com
In the last year, The Big Lemon raised an incredible £250,000 for investment in their Solar Bus Campaign, an amazing idea for electric buses in Brighton that will be up and running this spring. The ground-breaking campaign won the regional M&S Energy Awards, earning them an incredible £25,825 raised in funding from the M&S Community Energy Fund. This went into the exciting installation of 128 solar panels on the roof of the Big Lemon bus depot in Whitehawk. These brand new solar panels will generate 30,000kW of electricity – the equivalent of 1.8 million kettle boils! When the buses return to the depot, they stay overnight charging their batteries for the next day. They’ll have enough solar electricity to travel around 140 miles. These new buses will power the entire 52 bus route travelling between Woodingdean and Brighton town centre, which will do wonders in reducing pollution in those areas. The buses will run on totally clean, green 100% renewable energy with almost zero emissions. Yes, you heard that right - pretty much ZERO emissions!

The race is set to start at 7.30pm on the Saturday night. Whether you’re running as a race or just for fun, your timing chip will let you know how long it takes to complete the course. All ages and abilities are welcome, there’s no hills or tricky terrains so there’s no excuse not to get involved!
The Big Lemon were the winners of so many prestigious awards in the last year alone, including a hat-trick at Brighton and Hove Business Awards, winning Best Green Business, Best Place to Work and Business of the Year. Managing Director Tom Druitt says happily, “There’s nothing like this in the country.” This is a truly pioneering community project the Big Lemon team should be incredibly proud of.
Jarvis Cocker & Chilly Gonzales announce Room 29
A song-cycle about a piano in a hotel room
Do you believe in ghosts? What if a room could tell you the life-stories of the people that have inhabited it? Better still: what if it could sing you these stories? When Chilly Gonzales opened for Pulp all the way back in 2002, neither Gonzales nor Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker knew just how much they had in common. Fast forward a few years to when the two bumped into each other on a Paris Metro platform, they realised they were both residents of the same city and swapped numbers. Thus, a collaboration was born. Room 29 is a stunning and unique look at the ghosts of Hollywood’s golden age and the messages that resound today, inspired by Cocker’s stay at Hollywood’s famous Château Marmont hotel. The pair embarked on a threeyear long journey unearthing details of the hotel’s many famous (and infamous) guests, capturing their stories in song whilst shining a light on the glittering fantasies and bleak realities of a Hollywood life. Recorded in Paris almost entirely live, Room 29 is an exhilarating, imaginative and emotive metaphor for that hidden home inside all of us, where all our deepest desires are kept safe. As the famous are known to say: ‘if you must get in trouble, do it at the Château Marmont’. After its premiere as a ‘work-in-progess’ last year, Room 29 will be performed at London’s Barbican Centre from Thurs 23 - Sat 25 March. Room 29 is set for release on Fri 17 March via Deutsche Grammophon, and is available now for pre-order.

The organisers are offering 100 early bird tickets for just £10, which includes four beers, a swag bag and priority entry. St Patrick's Day Fri 17 March
Ready to paint the town green?
There are plenty of parties to choose from throughout the city come Fri 17 March. St Patrick’s Day is renowned for being one of the rowdiest nights on the calendar and this year won’t be any different. Join the biggest shamrock celebrations in the city at the Fiddler’s Elbow, a weekend long party on Boyce’s Street. From the Friday onwards, the festivities will spill onto the streets, with live music, Irish dancing and face painters. If you need to refuel, the kitchen will be providing stews and BBQs. If it’s an authentic Irish pub you’re after, head down to the Bugle Inn on St Martins Street. Not many people know it’s there but nestled within the residential area off Lewes Road is a pub once voted the third best place to enjoy a pint of Guinness in the UK! Hungry? The Globe on Middle Street will be serving a traditional Irish roast dinner all day. No doubt the Sussex Student Union-run pub will continue the celebrations late into the night, hauling in large crowds with student prices. For a guaranteed good time whatever type of celebration you fancy, The Freemasons Tavern on Western Road are going all out emerald, with a St Patrick’s Day-themed food and cocktail list, resident DJs and craic-ing giveaways. Party until dawn at Molly Malones on West Street, the place to hit the dancefloor with live music, drinks deals and gallons of Guinness at the end of the rainbow.
Brighton Record Fair Sun 12 March

Visitors will be able to browse thousands of great vinyl bargains and collectors’ items. I must take issue with the state of trousers in this country. Millennia of progress has delivered us to a point where wearing clothes which fit properly is no longer considered acceptable. It seems fashionable walking around in trousers so tight they show off your varicose veins. Apart from around the thighs, where the fashion is to appear like you’re dragging around an overladen nappy. I’d define myself as a ‘corduroy chap’. There’s something reassuring about that gentle rhythmic swish as one walks down to purchase a Daily Mail and pint of milk from the corner shop. In addition, there’s a hint of sartorial elegance which is sadly missing in modern day Britain. It’s certainly no coincidence the British Empire began crumbling at the same time denim jeans appeared in our high street. Care and attention has been cast out of the window. Can you remember the last time you saw someone under 40 tuck their t-shirt in? Or not wear trousers high enough to conceal their undergarments? Neither can I, but the doctor did say my incontinence medication could affect my memory. I certainly tuck my shirt in, and my belt is around my stomach where it belongs. Every morning I ensure a nice trouser crease with my Corby press, undoubtedly the second finest creation to emerge from Northamptonshire after Princess Diana. This is where corduroy wins out over the apparel worn by the spineless youth. It projects a dynamic, graceful, and superior attitude. Whether I’m at a garden party (I refuse to call them barbecues), the races or a nice summer wedding, people recognise me for the man I am.

A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM
YO U N G R BY N AO M I DAV I S O N © Christoffer Rosenfeldt
One of the most exciting artists set to play The Great Escape this year is multi-instrumentalist, Youngr. His refreshing blend of electronic pop is one of the most captivating sounds to have emerged from London in recent years. Youngr is the stage name of Dario Darnell and it has been since he started producing. “It’s actually my middle name, my dad chose it literally as I was the youngest out of me and my brother.” Performing live as a one-man band, he plays all the instruments himself and layers them in a way that sounds highly polished. Blending elements of house, pop, funk and soul his influences are extensive. “I love Prince, Michael Jackson and James Brown, but heavier stuff like The Red Hot Chili Peppers too.” There’s also a definite nod to the production of modern pop giants like Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake. Latest single, Out of My System was released about a year ago and has been incredibly successful. Since then he has released various alternate versions including one with Indian folk band Kutle Khan. He spent last summer playing festivals and recording his live videos in different locations. “I’ll never forget playing Guatemala - that was crazy.” He played his first Brighton gig last October co-headlining Party At The Races festival, alongside the legendary Basement Jaxx. Youngr didn’t come out of nowhere, having been performing for about 15 years, and it’s apparent his family have been integral to his career. He was previously in duo Picture Book with his brother Lorne, who he says he still regularly writes with. He cites his dad, August Darnell - aka Kid Creole of 80s funksters Kid Creole and the Coconuts - as another major influence. “Just being around that kind of scene was so cool, it definitely inspired me hugely.” An album is on the horizon but he doesn’t want to rush it. Building up a huge international following from his unique
live music videos has worked so far. Adamant that “as an artist it’s important to think outside the box”, he accepts we’re in a disposable age and believes artists should look for new ways to get their music out. “People want something they can watch quickly, share online then move onto the next thing.” The longevity of dance music is always uncertain. Youngr’s current formula is certainly working; he’s been releasing tracks on a regular enough basis to keep people hooked. “At the moment I’m just loving every minute.” As much as his sound has the gloss and catchiness of chart-topping pop, it also has a refreshing breeze of originality. You’d think it might be boring to watch just one person play a whole set but you can see how much fun he’s having performing and the audience feed off that. It will be interesting how he builds on the success of Out of My System. There should be a new single out soon, he says he’s just trying to figure out “what the vibe will be.” At the end of this month he is set to go on his largest tour yet, with dates across Europe and North America. “It’s nice to feel like it’s working out.” He’s clearly genuinely talented and in the business for the fun he gets out of it. We’ve had some great British producers over the last decade but there’s been a definite lull for a few years now. Obviously comparable to Jack Garratt, he has the potential to be up there with the likes of Disclosure and Flume. The one-man band is a tricky route but when pulled off it can be captivating. HACIENDA CL ASSICAL BY H E N N A M A L I K
Making a very welcome return to the coast this summer is the team behind the explosive and acclaimed house-classical fusion Hacienda Classical, bringing their brand-new and updated spectacle to Brighton Racecourse this August. Hacienda Classical is the incredible project created by an unexpected blend of two of the north’s biggest musical talents. Well of Manchester, to be exact. The Hacienda, the infamous club once powered by legendary label Factory Records (home to Happy Mondays and New Order), has teamed up with the finest experimental and contemporary orchestra in the city - Manchester Camerata. This genius combination is set on a course to breathe a new lease of life into the classic dance anthems that once shook the iconic striped beams and raised the roof off The Hacienda, defining a whole generation decades ago. Featured in the Channel 4 documentary Hacienda House Orchestra, the show follows Mike Pickering and Graeme Park, two seminal DJs responsible for shaping The Hacienda’s original sound, accompanied by some very special guests. This celebrated collaboration with Manchester Camerata resulted in one of the most innovative, meticulously arranged, classic reinventions you’ll see for a long time. Now in their second year of shows, Hacienda Classical promise an allnew setlist for a whole run of shows up and down the country – coupled with the guarantee for a truly inspirational night. As The Hacienda’s dance heritage collides with the complex world of classical music, Hacienda Classical has won widespread critical acclaim. Phenomenal demand surrounded a whole string of sell-out performances at some of the country’s biggest venues last year, with gigs selling out in just minutes. Just a few of these include London’s Royal Albert Hall and a lightning-quick selling show at our very own Brighton Dome during last year’s Brighton Festival.
Not only did the show receive an impressive five-star review from The Times, but Hacienda Classical also gained a following from renowned DJ and clubbing press Mixmag, who described the night as “a near two hour blend of house music’s greatest players with an audience dancing and singing from the off.” But that’s not all. “Dazzling mirror-ball speckles are flung out over a crowd whose jubilant euphoria almost blows the roof off,” they continued to say. If that hasn’t convinced you, we don’t know what will. As a celebration of the incredible success of the live shows that have taken place so far, the collective have also released Hacienda Classical, an album packed full with an exciting acid-soaked collection of classicised club anthems integrated into the full live set of the former show. Just a few of these reworks include Someday, You Don’t Know Me and the illustrious track You’ve Got The Love - available to purchase now through Sony Music. Described by NME as “the best rave since 1997”, this is one special night of soaring synths, euphoric drops and all the massive tunes you ever wanted to hear – reminiscence with a modern classical twist. You wouldn’t want to miss this for the world.

SHE’LL BEE THERE FOR YOU
HONEY G: X FAC TO R LIVE TOUR BY J A M E S STO N E
BY J A M E S STO N E Honey G was without a doubt the biggest talking point of The X Factor and, arguably, reality TV as a whole last year. Her animated performances and quick-fire rapping have led her to be the show’s biggest ‘guilty pleasure act’ since Jedward. From her first audition it became clear that she had huge ambitions to take the music world by storm. She did herself proud by reaching week seven of the live shows - even hosting an X Factor mannequin challenge along the way. Now she comes to the Brighton Centre on Thurs 17 - Fri 18 March with the X Factor Live Tour 2017. After speaking to her it appears ‘The Honey G Show’ is far from over…
and Jay-Z together and, apparently, you get Honey G. If Beyoncé was out of the picture and Jay-Z and Missy took a shine to each other, just think what could have happened. Honey-Z perhaps?
Before beginning her reality show journey, Honey admits “I had no idea what to expect”. With the help of mentor Sharon Osbourne, Honey’s performances stole the show every week. So much so she is the first act in the show’s history to be invited back to perform alone in the final. The 35-yearold from ‘North Weezy’ (North-West London apparently) was a hit with audiences, and despite arguably not having the best singing voice, the show felt that little bit emptier after week seven.
She’s very capable and qualified to handle herself in the industry. “I have been producing music for 15 years, I also have a 2:1 BA degree in Popular Music and Recording.” She insists that she will use this knowledge of the industry to create her own music. “I will hopefully be contributing and writing my own stuff a lot. I did co-write The Honey G Show.”
Since X Factor, Honey has been getting a taste of celebrity life. “It's a completely unique sensation. Everywhere I go people want selfies or I'll get mobbed. A lot of the time I can't really go out unless I'm with my security, just to be on the safe side.” She has also has a bulging diary. “I've been really busy since X Factor ended, touring the UK and Ireland. My gigs have been incredible - they love me everywhere I go, the crowds of people have been manic!” During this busy period, she has also managed to release a debut single The Honey G Show. Her choice of outfit for the show was very unconventional for the X Factor, sporting a baggy tracksuit, trainers and sunglasses. Her persona is also unique with her use of West London slang. It’s intriguing to see exactly where she gets all this from. “Missy Elliott and Jay-Z are big inspirations to me,” she explains. So, there you have it: mix Missy Elliott
Other artists she’d like to collaborate with, again convey her ambitious nature - “Lil Wayne, Chance, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent,” are a few she mentions. Her vision seems to be set on making an entrance to the American stage. “I'm only really keen on collaborating with US Hip-Hop artists,” she explains.
Back in her first audition, the Darth Vader of all judging panels (Simon Cowell) was less than impressed. He gave his verdict in his classic blunt delivery stating, “You shouldn’t be doing that.” However by the end of the series he was seen sporting a pair of Honey G sunglasses with the rest of the panel. “He's actually a really lovely man. During X Factor I met him regularly in the corridor where his dressing room was. He always said ‘hello’ to me and asked me how I was. I also spoke to him after the final and we had a hug.” Honey G will be joined by winner Matt Terry and the rest of the finalists as the X Factor Live Tour 2017 concludes in Brighton. It is going to be a “mega production and Honey G growing as a real Global Rap Star, performing some big numbers.” Event: X Factor Live When: Thurs 16 - Fri 17 March Where: Brighton Centre Tickets: From £22.30+bf Book: www.brightoncentre.co.uk

T E Z I LY A S BY J A M E S STO N E
This Blackburn-born actor/comedian has been stirring up the stand-up circuit since 2010. He’s hit the ground running, reaching several prestigious comedy award finals and has received huge acclaim wherever he goes. I spoke to Ilyas ahead of his performance at Brighton’s Komedia on Sun 2 April, which forms part of his first nationwide tour. His latest gig will deliver more of the same quick-witted jokes and poignant takes on the British-Asian experience, which have made Ilyas’ work so popular over the past few years. “I am touring the show I took to the Edinburgh Fringe festival last year, I did Made in Britain there and it did really well! The show is about how I’ve had a lot of experiences in Britain, which haven’t been very mainstream given my background.” For a comedian who delivers such confident performances, it is intriguing to know if he feels more pressure due to the acclaim he has received. “Yes a little bit, when I go to do comedy clubs, I don’t normally feel the pressure because no one knows who I am. Then I surprise them by being funny I guess,” he jokes. “But when people have paid to specifically just see me, then yes, there is a bit of pressure there to make sure that I deliver some entertainment for them.” Comedians sometimes adopt nicknames - think Al Murray’s The Pub Landlord - and on this topic, I wondered if Ilyas had a moniker or superhero-style alias. “I’ve never been asked that before, I guess because Tez Ilyas is quite easy to recognise. What I like to call my fans in a very tongue-incheek way is Tezbians,” he laughs. And one thing is for sure – this new breed of fanbase is on the rise. No stranger to appearing on TV, Ilyas has appeared on many shows such as Channel 4’s Virtually Famous and more recently Comedy Central’s The Chris Ramsey Show. But when you’ve appeared on some of the best up-and-coming shows on TV and toured the entire country, what do you do next? “I am always on the radio. I have a BBC Radio 4 show, Tez Talks. So I will be recording that.” He continues, “I have been in touch with a couple of people to do some television stuff, but nothing concrete just yet.” An ambitious funny man, he’s got his eyes set on the top. He seems thoughtful for a moment before informing me, “I would love to be on Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Live at the Apollo. That
would be amazing!” The way his career has skyrocketed in the last seven years, it would be no surprise if we see him appear on these shows anytime soon. He never planned on being a comedian. Instead it came and grew onto Ilyas later in his life. With his style it’s no surprise he draws inspiration from a myriad of artists. “I am very heavily inspired by a lot of writers, such as Armando Iannucci, who made The Thick of It. I am a massive fan of Chris Morris. In terms of stand-up I would say that Stewart Lee has been a big influence.” Their style has evidently rubbed off on Ilyas, showing in his quick delivery reminiscent of the Iannucci created Malcolm Tucker, as well as his dark humour relating to current affairs, a style utilised by both Morris and Lee. Political controversies are, naturally, a huge source of influence for comedians. In this sense, Ilyas is on point. Regarding Made in Britain, he tells me, “I’m changing it slightly given what is happening in the world with Donald Trump and stuff. The show was post-Brexit anyway so there is a bit of that in there.” He also jokes about the proposed travel ban in the United States. “Well obviously it’s a horrific idea, but if I was trying to make a joke about it… I mean its fine banning some people as long as you ban other people as well. So for example you should be banning people who go to an ice cream parlour then get a tub rather than a cone. Who are those animals?” This will not be the first time Ilyas has come to Brighton and he has fond memories of the city. “Yes, I love Brighton! I never came as a kid but have a lot over the last five years. I came the first time for my friend’s wedding, they got married in Brighton. And then there has been a few times doing stand-up.” Ilyas will be at Brighton Fringe festival, an event he attends regularly, with a performance at Otherplace in Brighton later in the year. OVERFLOWING WITH PROMISE
TEN FÉ BY A B B I E R O G E R S
Many bands fantasise about the moment they get the call that whisks them from busking a London tube station to a recording studio in Berlin. Ten Fé would tell them to have faith. “We moved from our bedrooms, dreaming of making an album, to the reality of it.” Under the Ten Fé moniker, Ben Moorhouse and Leo Duncan are the latest band on the brink of hitting the big time. The debut album Hit the Light, released in early February, has already received recognition from the Guardian and NME and doesn’t show signs of stopping as their European tour begins. Described as an alternative indie pop duo with an electronic undercurrent, it’s clear this band will not be caged into one genre. The album is a catalogue of diversity. Each song stands independently: Elodie has an alt-pop feel, Turn is more soulful and In The Air displays the band’s Americana influences. “We wrote these songs for everyone, it’s not niche, it’s not underground, it’s supposed to be for everyone,” Leo says. Rather than clashing, they form together to offer something varied but balanced. They have a unique writing style that mimics their personality differences. Moorhouse is a more sombre character, contrasting Duncan’s enthusiastic impulsiveness. You can feel this difference as they speak but they also offer the sense they level each other out. During the song writing process, each begin by writing their own song before later coming together to fine tune the other’s work collaboratively. They then take lead vocals on their own respective composition. Brighton has a great deal of importance to Ten Fé. It was at The Great Escape festival that the pair signed their very first publishing deal. They signed to Budde, an independent music publisher based in Germany. Duncan says this was a great boost for the band. “If you’re any kind of artist you need people to support you, you can’t just work on your own forever. They clearly had a lot of faith in us. They gave us a lot of confidence to write a bunch of fresh songs.” Once the publishing deal was finalised, that debut album finally felt within reach. “When you’re given money, the idea of the album becomes real and you start thinking, who can we work with now? Where can we record it?”
When: Weds 8 March Where: Green Door Store Tickets: £8 / 18+ Event The ‘who’s and ‘where’s followed quickly after. Moorhouse and Duncan got in touch with Ewan Pearson, an electronic music producer based in Berlin, who’s previous collaborations included The Rapture, M83 and Jagwar Ma. Moorhouse explained how they played him the songs they’d written and discussed ideas for how to record them. “It became really apparent that there was something good going on between us, he had a sensitivity to the songs that really excited us.” With Pearson’s recording studio based in Berlin, Ten Fé made the decision to relocate. “We thought that would be great to get out of London and have a chance to totally focus on the recording process, without having any other distractions that we normally have back at home.” Four years down the line, the London pair found it was all coming together. With the album a long time in the making, it’s no surprise Duncan saw it as a relief. “We started playing these songs together a while ago so we’ve always had a great deal of faith in them. It was strange to have to wait so long for people to hear them, but it’s nice now that they are out in the world that people feel the same way,” he explains. It doesn’t stop there for this twosome, however. They finally get to perform the material they’ve been waiting to play for so long. Their European tour kicked off in Rotterdam on Thurs 23 Feb and travels through Denmark and Germany before returning the UK. Their first English gig is in Brighton on Weds 8 March at the Green Door Store. “We can’t wait to play Brighton; we’ve had such good memories playing Brighton. We got signed at The Great Escape. Every gig we’ve done there has been brill.” It’s clear that performing the album is what it’s all about for Duncan. “The reviews and everything are really nice but what really matters is how people respond to it in the flesh.” With a debut album and European tour under their belt, what’s the next goal? Moorhouse speaks enthusiastically about the future. “The ultimate goal is to still be doing this years down the line, we’re hungry to get onto the next stuff. I just hope that this momentum continues to build now, we just want to keep on this train.”

I defy you to find me a bigger accidental success than Peter Hook & The Light. Seven years later, and the collective show no sign of slowing down, performing greats from Joy Division’s legendary Unknown Pleasures and Closer albums, as well as tracks from New Order albums Movement and Power, Corruption & Lies. Their 2017 tour sees The Light perform celebrated compilation albums Substance by both acts, further demonstrating even today just how iconic the two bands are.

If modern Americana-tinged pop is your jam, look no further than superstar-in-themaking Canaan Smith. Since bursting on to the scene with evocative single We Got Us in 2011, the singer/songwriter has been touring with some of the biggest names in American country and British breakthrough duo The Shires. An intriguing blend of your everyday workingman and a rowdy adrenaline junkie with a poet’s heart and, in contrast, a pirate’s ambition, Smith can owe his diverse style to his childhood, spent growing up singing along to everything available to him during his teenage years, from George Strait to Rage Against the Machine. Signed to label giants Mercury Records, the soloist is certainly off to a cracking start.
Not to be confused with the HUGE Beyonce track of the same name, London five-piece Formation have been making waves in the industry in the last year with their blend of disco grooves, punk attitude and intense social commentary. Inspired by a number of diverse artists, including Fugazi, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, the quintet have built a cult following from their immensely fun and energetic live shows (pretty apt for a band with a name that evokes the idea of coming together and getting people involved). Having drawn comparisons to LCD Soundsystem, the band are off to a great start - all the more reason to catch them now before they hit the mainstream.
Bringer of garage music to the masses, the return of the beloved Craig David is one of the most talked about in decades. Brighton: wait no more! Having sold over 15 million albums, achieved 16 top ten hits and multiplatinum status in more than 20 countries in his prime, David was one of the biggest names to grace the music world in the early noughties, which led him to be immortalised in the turn-of-the-millennium toilet humour show Bo’ Selecta. Now, demand for David’s live shows are higher than ever following the success of his critically acclaimed TS5 shows and festival appearances. Catch him at the Brighton Centre ahead of the release of his latest album, Following My Intuition – it’s going to be huge.

Having travelled his whole life (born in Johannesburg yet calling Colorado home), Isakov’s narrative is unparalleled – often described as a strong, subtle lyrical genius – however there are certainly mementos of the works of Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen among his masterpieces. The singer-songwriter is already known for juggling multiple instruments on stage, his songs often combining indie and folk with contrasting instruments such as the guitar and mandolin. It’s the sixth effort from the dulcet-toned songstress, which more than delivers in her true-to-form combination of minor-key tunes and delicate lyrics, telling relatable stories back to us as if they were our own. Such is her acclaim that her most recent single Kismet Kill was A-listed on BBC 6 Music; she later gave a stunning performance on Later… with Jools Holland, boosting her success yet again with a plethora of tour dates to follow. For those who aren’t yet familiar with Bonar’s work, imagine the soft melodies of Camera Obscura amalgamated with lullaby-like qualities of early work by The Shins. Not to miss.
BRIGHTON CENTRE
FRI 31 MARCH Fresh off the back of the release of their sophomore album, Volcano, Temples return to Brighton explosive as ever, with their mid-period Byrds-esque brand of neo-psychedelia. Formed in Kettering in 2012, the band has achieved acclaim amongst their peers in their short lifespan, hand-picked to support the likes of Suede, Kasabian and The Vaccines. However, they’ve received scarce mention or airplay on major UK radio stations (much to the dismay of Oasis’ Noel Gallagher), despite catchy melodies and radio-friendly hooks smattering their tracks. While debut album Sun Structures saw Temples experiment with their sound, Volcano sees the band return more assured in their intoxicating melodies than ever before.

Twenty shows and events have been awarded £10,000 worth of bursaries to aid them in being able to put on exciting new shows for the Brighton Fringe. Whether you’d rather see an exhibition of star photographers or a modern day Mexican ghost story, these works reflect the huge variety at the festival. Tim Andrews was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005 and has strived to turn himself into an art project ever since. His Over the Hill exhibition (including our cover shot) will be shown at Hove’s Montefiore Hospital on Fri 5 - Fri 26 May, with the help of the Brighton Lions Bursary. “We came to live in Brighton in 2011, because we knew it to be such a buzzy and exciting place from our previous visits to the Fringe.” His show features 40 images of himself, captured over the last nine years by photographers like Rankin, Steve Bloom, Harry Borden, Danielle Tunstall and Spencer Murphy. The exhibition came about due to the enthusiasm of a Consultant at Montefiore, who saw Andrews’ previous exhibition at the Photo Fringe in 2014. “I was absolutely thrilled when the Brighton Lions awarded me a bursary to assist with the registration fee for Brighton Fringe.” The project continues to raise awareness of his condition, and the work Parkinson's UK are undertaking to develop more effective medication and treatment, and hopefully, a cure. The winner of Pebble Trust’s International Touring bursary is South African sensation Rob van Vuuren. He is well known in SA as a comedy actor, writer and director, having co-hosted South Africa’s Got Talent and winning their version of Strictly Come Dancing. No stranger to a standing ovation, he will be bringing his dark horror comedy Dangled to Fringe. It will play at The Warren from Mon 22 - Weds 24 May. Having already won Cape Town Fringe’s Audience Choice Award, it’s bound to be a crowd pleaser. Ray’s Café and La Llorona: The Weeping Woman will appear at the Fringe courtesy of the Irene Mensah Brighton Fringe Bursary for cultural diversity. Ray’s Café is a piece of
storytelling theatre formed from an ensemble of migrants, which features Ray Brooks, star of Ken Loach’s Cathy Come Home. It will be performed from Tues 30 May – Sun 4 June. La Llorona: The Weeping Woman is an outdoor Mexican spectacular set in and around the grounds of Preston Manor. The modern ghost story will incorporate live performance, video, music, ritual and theatre. This bursary will help their journey to perform at the Fringe after they created a crowdfunding pledge to afford building materials, costumes and venues. Encore Insure bursary winners are The Pied Piper Theatre Company’s performance of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and drag cabaret show A History of Horror. The Pebble Trust Bursary for Young Performers was awarded to three performances: Fragments From Your Workplace by Sofia Rendall, 10 Steps to Happiness by Happening Theatre Company and Fandango! by Kids with Beards. These bursaries are vital for some production companies, who simply may not be able to perform without this help. Managing Director, Julian Caddy says the support is invaluable: “Each year we look to develop the amount of bursaries available at Brighton Fringe and I’m delighted to say there has been over £10,000 in support for participants this year, whether through free registrations or the generosity of our partners. Times are hard for artists, so whatever support we are able to offer, however small, can represent the difference between being able to put on their event or not.”
Brighton Fringe 2017 will run from Fri 5 May - Sun 4 June. Tickets go on general sale from Fri 3 March. With hundreds of events coming to venues throughout the city, this looking to be the biggest Fringe to date. www.brightonfringe.org

His performance is a mix between theatre, stand-up, journalism and activism. The audience will be able to get involved (in a surprisingly nice way) in order to be able to recreate the infamous(ish) Red Shed. Thomas is best known for his political stunts on his show The Mark Thomas Comedy Product, he will be delivering educational yet humorous material to a very interactive audience.
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of her arrival in Britain, Shappi Khorsandi is reclaiming patriotism and sending a love letter to her adopted land! The star of Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow is back with a brand new show. Khorsandi uses her charm to her advantage, as she delivers sharp witty jokes about everyday life, the UK-Iran cultural divide and the generation gap. Khorsandi also makes frequent jokes to her past, including relationships and awkward experiences with fans. She’s sure to deliver a performance that will make audiences laugh their heads off and justify why she is among the best comedians in the country.
The down to earth, common comedian is coming to Brighton as part of his Bad Man Tings on tour. Donnelly presents his material as if you were having a normal conversation with him. It’s his style to take things which would normally come up in conversation, but elaborates on them humorously. In his relatively short career, Donnelly has appeared on many comedy shows, won the Edinburgh Comedy Award twice, and has performed all over the world. Bad Man Tings is travelling all over the UK and stopping in continental Europe before arriving at Komedia. TV GUIDE BY A B B I E R O G E R S
QUANTICO THURS 2 MARCH Following a successful first series, Alex Parrish and the team are back. This time around sees Alex training with the CIA following her dismissal from the FBI at the end of the last season. Joined by onscreen love interest Ryan Booth, both characters work undercover at the CIA training facility The Farm to uncover the truth about a secret terrorist organisation working within it. Meanwhile in the future, the G20 summit has been taken hostage by a group of terrorists called the Citizen’s Liberation Front. With Alex nearby, it is up to her to save as many lives as she can, but who can she trust? Priyanka Chopra stars alongside Jake McLaughlin and British star Russell Tovey. The show has already aired in the US but will be coming to the UK on Thurs 2 March at 9pm on Alibi.
IRON FIST FRI 17 MARCH Marvel’s Iron Fist is set to premiere on Netflix UK on Fri 17 March. Protagonist Danny Rand will be played by Finn Jones of Game of Thrones fame. The show follows the story of a boy who, after losing his family in a tragic accident, is adopted by the people of a mystical lost city. When Rand returns home to New York City many years later, he fights against criminals corrupting the city with his incredible kung-fu mastery and his ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist. He will star alongside Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jessica Stroup (90210) and Tom Pelphrey (Law & Order).
CARTERS GET RICH THIS MARCH Sky 1 premiere a new family comedy this March. The show follows 11-year-old genius Harry Carter, who creates HONC – an app for geeky kids who can’t talk to girls. It quickly becomes the biggest thing in the social networking world and is snapped up by American billionaire Trent Zebriski for £10 million. The Carters are turned into overnight multi-millionaires. Their new found wealth is tricky for the family, so Trent employs his advisor Oliver to help them adapt to the sudden fame and fortune. James Van Der Beek stars as Trent, alongside newcomer Rio Chambers as Harry. It’s a comedy for all the family.
LOVE FRI 10 MARCH Judd Apatow’s Love returns to Netflix on Fri 10 March for its second series. The story follows two very different characters, Mickey and Gus as the pair struggle with life, love and work. Season one followed the complicated romance between them as they cross paths at pivotal points in their lives. The second series shows Mickey and Gus facing commitment and all that comes with it as they attempt to bring order to their lives. The show is based in part on the show’s creators Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin but whilst they are now married, they say this does not guarantee a happy ending for their on-screen counterparts. Paul Rust stars as Gus alongside Gillian Jacobs as Mickey.
L AT E S T C IN E M A R E L E A S E S GHOST IN THE SHELL FRI 31 MARCH Scarlett Johansson finally leads her own comic-book movie - but not the way we’re used to seeing her. Johansson swaps her iconic Black Widow persona for a character whose fighting style and personality is… almost exactly the same. Take a trip to 2029 and follow Major (a one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid), in her battle against criminals and extremists, whilst trying to find out about her past. This live action remake of the 1980s comic book series, and 1995 animated movie, brings in director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman). A self-confessed fan of the original material, he’s created brilliant, alternative futuristic visuals as well as breathtaking choreography. It is a sci-fi adventure like nothing ever seen in Hollywood before, and may be a dark horse at this year’s box office.
LOGAN WEDS 1 MARCH Based in the near future, famous Marvel hero Logan (Hugh Jackman) is in hiding, caring for his ageing mentor and friend Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). However with the introduction of a young girl being closely followed by dark forces, Logan must once again embrace his alter-ego – The Wolverine. After the success of 2016’s Deadpool, Logan takes a more adult approach to the comic-book genre, so prepare for a ton of cursing and lots of gore. This will likely be Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine after playing the part for the past 17 years. So expect an action-packed, emotional roller coaster, full of stunning visuals, to give this iconic character the sign off he deserves.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST FRI 17 MARCH Disney’s obsession of live-action rebooting continues with the story of a monstrous looking prince and innocent young lady. Following the success of 2015’s Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast takes a dark turn, swapping comedy for more emotional depth. Emma Watson and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) team up as Belle and Prince (turned Beast) Adam. They combine with director Bill Condon, who is no stranger to the dark romantic scene with his work on Twilight: Breaking Dawn. The stars and director mixed with an incredible soundtrack - including the work of Alan Menken, who worked on the 1991 animated original – suggest this movie is going to balance everything that made the original great, with new breathtaking special effects.
KONG: SKULL ISLAND FRI 10 MARCH Experience the origin story of one of the most famous movie monsters. Plunge into the unknown with a team of explorers and soldiers as they travel to an uncharted island, unaware of the creatures that already possess the land - especially their King. The movie is in the same ‘monsterverse’ as 2014’s Godzilla and is a reboot of the King Kong movie franchise. This big cinematic event hosts an all-star cast, led by Tom Hiddleston (High-Rise, Avengers Assemble) and Samuel L Jackson (The Hateful Eight, Pulp Fiction). The film unites this stellar cast with acclaimed director Jordan Vogt-Roberts taking the big step from independent film to Hollywood blockbuster. This monstrous spectacle is not to be missed!

THE
DIZZY GULL B Y F R E YA H U G H E S
We’ve all got that beer-loving friend who takes a lifetime at the bar choosing their tipple. Now, imagine you’re at the bar after a long old day and your beer buddy is stood in awe in front of a 19-strong list of different ales, lagers and ciders. I breathed an inward sigh, thinking I was in for a long night. Fortunately for me, Brighton Beer Dispensary has some very knowledgeable bar staff. After asking what flavours we enjoy, we were sat down with two fantastic drinks within about five minutes – off to a fantastic start! Our bartender really paid attention to our tastes, serving me up a Helles Lagerbier at 5.2% (£5.40), which had a beautifully subtle hoppy edge to it. My companion opted for a light amber Wiper and True ale, which was enjoyed thoroughly (£3.15 per half pint/£4.20 for two thirds of a pint). Pint-inhand, we took our seats at a bar-style table to take a look at the menu. This being an evening focused on a proper pub experience, who were we not to try the infamous Beerkins (£4)? The ultimate drinking snack, these are deliciously salty gherkins encased in a gorgeously light batter, served with mustard mayo. Now, I’m not really a fan of gherkins - but the chefs here have (somehow) succeeded in creating the perfect crunchy batter, without the sogginess. Beerkins give you a sense of eating a hotdog (without the sausage, obviously), and are so addictive they keep you going back for more. We could easily have demolished a portion each of these. In unison our oxtail nuggets (£4) arrived. Honestly one of the richest tastes I’ve ever tried, these give a deep, warming flavour that comforts you like sitting by a crackling fire on a cold winter’s day. Next to arrive were our selections from The Dizzy Gull’s specials menu. First up was the salt cod croquette (£4) accompanied by squid ink aioli. The croquette had a fluffy consistency – filled with a creamy mix of mashed potato and cod, the flavours were balanced beautifully. Not too fishy, the perfectly golden breadcrumb casing gave a fantastic crunch to juxtapose the inside. Alongside the croquette,
we were presented with crispy pork belly fries (£5). Now, these are not your regular fries - these are chunky, mouthwatering, proper chips. In fact, they’re dripping chips made with succulent chunks of pork belly, spicy Sriracha and a wonderful homemade bacon mayo. The hot sauce was a fantastic touch, adding a fiery bite to each mouthful. An egg proudly topped this dish, oozing volcanic yolk that smothered our chips, adding texture and taste to die for. Opting to share a main after a good amount of food to start, we were advised that the bier braised beef cheek (£9) was quite unforgettable. Served with vindaloo mash and gravy, beetroot chutney and onion salad, I was honestly a little bit intimidated by the potential spice. Digging in, the beef was totally melt-in-your-mouth amazing. Although the first bite ensured our ears blew a little bit of steam, the heat became more of a nice, slow burn as we got stuck in. The beetroot chutney and onion salad were the perfect lifesavers as they cooled our palates, allowing us to continue to shovel down the good-sized portion in a timely fashion. To quench our thirst, we gratefully accepted one last round of beers. This time my dining partner chose the Pressure Drop Pale Fire at 4.8% (£3.30 half pint/£4.40 three-quarter pint), which boasted a long-lasting smoky taste, while I chose the Four Pure Indy Lager at 4.4% (£4.90 per pint). The latter went down so easily, concluding our meal wonderfully. As we finished up the last of our beers, the pub began to bustle with people, ready for the weekly quiz night. Sliding out onto Dean Street with full tummies, we were sad to find our evening coming to a close. My beer buddy turned to me and cheekily asked, ‘pint?’ Where: Open:

THE BULL BY TO N Y M A R K S
Google tells me there are around 52,000 pubs in the UK. So to be named Great British Pub Of The Year 2016 is a big deal. But can The Bull in Ditchling really be that good? This was something I was happy to investigate. On first impressions it was everything I expected it to be an upmarket village boozer with low beams and lighting, an open fire. A cheery hello from manager Molly, who’s pulling pints behind the bar, she’s quick to ask if we’d like one too. We quickly spot four ales from Sussex-based Bedlam Brewery on tap, which is hardly surprising as the pub and brewery are owned by Dominic Worrall, so we go for two pints of their excellent Pale Ale (£4.90) but far from just stocking his own beer, they also had Longboard, Curious Brew, Brooklyn, Landlord and guest ales on offer. We could’ve sat in the charming restaurant but this was an evening with one of my drinking buddies and to spend time together without a bar somewhere in view would, in all honesty, be a bit weird for both of us. The menu has a wide range of modern takes on classic pub dishes. For starters my friend went for Braised Oxtail (£8), served on top of a carrot and turnip mash, which visually looked like an island circled by an ocean of delicious oxtail consommé. This could’ve easily been too filling for a entree but was portioned just right. I had Smoked Cheddar Leek & Potato Tart (£7) and was pleasantly surprised to find was, despite the singular title, was actually two deep mini tarts that, when sliced opened, spilled nice chunks of veg into a tangy sunblushed tomato salad. It’s an expectation of country pubs to source their produce locally these days and The Bull definitely didn’t let us down. All their meat, game and poultry comes from Sussex or Kent farms, the fish caught from Brighton and Newhaven, and many of the herbs and vegetables from their own garden. With all this in mind we were looking forward to the mains.
I decided to go with the Confit Pork Belly (£16) and wasn’t disappointed with the large portion that was topped with a thick piece of crunchy crackling. And if this felt like an overindulgence it was balanced out by pearl barley wrapped in a Savoy cabbage leaf, garnished with fennel-pickled apple. Black pudding was also crumbled around the plate, inviting me to take a piece with every fork of meat or barley. My friend took the fish route, choosing Smoked Poached Haddock (£14). Before trying it we questioned whether having the potatoes spiced was entirely necessary, but when mixed with the soft yolk from the poached egg, proved to be a lovely touch. While we digested, we grilled Molly about The Bull and found out they beat 1,600 entries to win their award. They’ve also raised £3,000 for a local pre and infant school that has lost it’s government funding, and are extending the pub to add an extra 40 covers to the 70 they can already take. For dessert we spoiled ourselves with Apple, Cinnamon & Raisin Crumble (£6.50) with a scoop of their homemade vanilla ice cream, and Buttermilk Pannacotta, served with squares of Pistachio Cake & Raspberry Sorbet (£8), which, like everything else we’d eaten, was nothing less than superb. The great thing about The Bull is that you can instantly tell everyone who works there is rightly very proud of what they do, and while I haven’t tried all the remaining 51,999 pubs in Britain, I feel fairly confident in saying you’d do well to find a better one.
