MARCH 2013

Spring’s here and it seems the days are going by faster than horsemeat entering the food chain. So, before the year has disappeared in front of our eyes, we need to appreciate all the bright and exciting things March has to offer. So this issue we’re getting mixed up at Hotel du Vin, taking a look at the stage adaptation of Yes, Prime Minister as it visits The Theatre Royal and analysing the comedic magic of US funny-man Rich Hall. Of course there’s also our usual pithy and insightful coverage of all the theatre, comedy and music events that Brighton has to offer. RICH HALL PAGE 8

MARCH Spring has sprung! The sun is rising noticeably earlier, the boisterous hen and stag parties are returning, the souvenir shops and beachfront cafes are slowly returning to life and your day’s now punctuated by the sound of seemingly random roadworks. There’s even been a report of a smiling police officer on West St. Slowly more and more events are taking place outside. It’s an early Easter, so pray for fair weather for those brave souls in Passion Of The Christ, or as we like to call it: Law And Order Jerusalem, a passion play by St Peter’s Church. “What Jesus blatantly fails to appreciate is that it’s the meek who are the problem…” Down New Road on Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th, is the ever popular Chocolate Festival, where two days of choco-fuelled festivities return to Brighton to stir up passions and fuel the imagination. New Road is also the venue for the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival’s Big Sussex Market on Good Friday and Easter Saturday (that’s the 29th and 30th March for the heathens amongst you.) This Spring food spectacular never fails to throw up some tasty treats, no matter what your palette. If you like spending your weekends wearing leather, touring bars looking for hot action and slipping a huge throbbing monster between your legs, then you’ll probably be right up for the Pioneer Motorcycle Run. Organised by The Sunbeam Motorcycle Club for over 80 years, this legendary London to Brighton is open to all motor cycles and tricycles manufactured before 1915. Get yourself down to Madeira Drive at about lunchtime on Sunday 17th and see some real moving history. Remember, at the end of the month (Sunday 31st March in fact), the clocks go forward, so you’ll all have one less hour to prepare for next month’s marathon.

VEG FEST Hove Town Hall 16th - 17th March Get ready for VegfestUK’s 2 day free extravaganza at The Hove Centre on Saturday 16th - 17th March, a celebration of all things 100% plantbased, with food, bodycare, clothes, accessories, gifts, plus stacks of info and positive energy! To keep you entertained there’ll be talks and presentations, cookery classes, kid’s cookery classes and activities, a speed dating session, live music, even a cinema. Over 5,000 visitors will be browsing the 130 stalls over 3 floors, with special offers, including huge savings on leading brands and free samples galore. brighton.vegfest.co.uk

GRASSROOTS Brighton and Hove has one of the highest suicide rates in England. Grassroots Suicide Prevention has a 3 year plan to turn this situation around, by encouraging people to talk openly about this very real issue. If you’d like to help, then head to their website and consider taking the ‘Tell Me’ suicide prevention pledge. It’s hoped for every person in the city thinking about suicide, there’ll be someone who’s unafraid to talk about it and can offer ways of seeking help. www.prevent-suicide.org.uk

THE MAGIC BAND 1st March // Concorde2

STEVE REICH re-writes RADIOHEAD 7th March // Brighton Dome

Captain Beefheart’s old crew have been touring their mentors classics for a while now and to rave reviews so this show promises to be a real treat for those of us who love our weirdness to be sixties nostalgia-tinged weirdness. Beefheart was responsible for some many great moments in musical history that it’s difficult to know for certain what they will play but hopefully a lot of Trout Mask Replica and the epically under-rated Safe As Milk. If they do this may well the show of the year.

Steve Reich always meant for me hard, complex music that was above all serious and with intent to challenge the listener so what this show is going to consist of, well frankly, I have no idea. I doubt we will hear Creep done with flailing guitars though but for those of you who enjoy such experiences then this will be a real treat.

TINY DRAGONS 8th March // Latest Music bar

BOUNCING SOULS 9th March // The Haunt

People occasionally moan at me for making these previews all about old or ‘legendary’ acts that none of the kids have ever heard of. Well here is a new young band who none of the kids have heard of but with a difference as I predict it won’t be long before their pop-tinged indie rock is flavour of the month in some circles. Having already garnered a following of not insignificant record industry types this is the show in which they get to give it back to us, the people of Brighton, their current base, and we should be joyous for the opportunity.

One of those bands who came out of the US punk scene in the mid-90s there was always a timeless quality to their sound and it comes as no surprise to learn of their continued touring. Back in the day they were great; fast, simple songs you could sing along with and drink beer whilst flailing around too all at the same time. Now I guess we’ve all grown up by nearly twenty years so probably less flailing but still a great live spectacle I bet!

PERE UBU 13th March // The Haunt

BO NINGEN 28th March // The Haunt

What can one say about Pere Ubu that hasn’t been said a million times before? Main man David Thomas is a colossus on stage and even hearing him just speak is enough to send some grown men running for cover. Now in their fifth decade of creating and with a new album launched recently this is going to be some show as we get to hear where their art is now. I for one can’t wait!!

APPLES AND EVE + EMMA GATRILL + WILLOWEN 4th April // Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar

This is one for the diary, organised by Brighton’s Finest, you can enjoy rising locals Apples and Eve, Willowen and the ever so talented Emma Gatrill, a full time musician with Sons of Noel and Adrian, and has also lent her vocals, clarinet or accordion to acts such as Laura Marling and Broken Social Scene in the past. Just £5 entry or £4 NUS.

More relative newness and yet more weirdness… joy! These Japanese cosmonauts are now based in London and create that kind of epic psychedelia that it seems only the Japanese can at the minute. I think down here we’ve been lucky to see them play a fair few times but this is definitely their biggest show so far so cosmonauts get yr head-gear on and fly on over to see them!

RICH HALL BY STUART ROLT

Veering between surrealist acerbity and rapid-fire wit, Rich Hall’s grouchy, yet human observations of the world, both culturally and politically, are why he’s one of the best comedians the US has ever produced. "I have always loved doing live comedy more than anything else,” he says. “I adore the electricity of it. I like being in that moment. There is nothing sanitised about that, it's very real. You have to really think on your feet, and that always keeps it interesting.” He’s on tour once again, and it’s a task he relishes. "I really look forward to the fact that every night is different. That’s the only way to keep it fresh. A lot of comedians lock onto a show and never change it. But for me, that is not taking advantage of where you are. The more you try to acknowledge where you are and take in local colour, the more you involve yourself with an audience and the more comic sparks fly. You may have caught him on TV shows such as Have I Got News for You and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, so you may partly know what to expect. But a live audience, and the interactions it can provide, bring out the best in him. Not least as they often provide inspiration for his redneck alter ego, Country and Western singer Otis Lee Crenshaw.

"Whenever I ask, 'what's this place famous for?', I always get an amazing response. Recently they have mainly been downbeat stories about closed factories. Someone is always hacked off that they don't make trouser presses there anymore. So I take the Woody Guthrie approach and turn it into a song!" Now living in the UK, Hall clearly loves his newly adopted country, the quirks and eccentricities of this new home providing a rich vein of material, not that the country of his birth gets to escape his relentless acerbity. "Because I've lived here for 14 years, I feel I've earned the right to talk about Britain. I like to talk about what's going on in America and compare that to here. There's plenty of material there. “Americans are outward-looking, loud, brash and ostentatious, and that's very easy to make fun of. But British reserve is also very funny. The Brits do not want to be seen to be enjoying themselves, while Americans go out of their way to

let people know they’re having a great time. Americans have a front-porch culture, while Brits hide more in their backyard. They are having a good time, but they don't want anyone to know about it. Planes fly overhead and see the Brits having fun in their backyards, and you guys say, 'Watch out! There's a plane flying overhead! Look miserable!'" Such is the broad endearing appeal of Hall’s gruff sardonic manner that Matt Groening supposedly based The Simpsons’ curmudgeonly barman, Moe Szyslak, on him. "Audiences are watching this grouchy persona, but most people can see that I'm having a really good time on stage. It's ironic grouchiness. No one can stay worked up about things for that long. Once you have generated a passion about something, it's already passed. Also when people get really angry on stage, it never works. It has to be controlled rage." But how does a disgruntled persona work so well in a comedy situation? "People might say its invective, but deep down when I'm doing comedy I'm just trying to touch raw nerves. Someone in the audience is always a lot more peeved than I am and is glad that someone else is talking about it. "You can articulate the audience’s anger. We all know that you can't be that angry all the time, but as a comedian you can touch on it and help people to express their rage. You always have to have a target, whether it is The Man, the economy, the government or some celebrity idiot. Something has to be taken down a notch, and the best way to approach that is through articulated rage. In person Hall is far removed from his gruff, deadpan stage persona. The man from Montana is charming and dazzlingly intelligent. This has been reflected by his filming of acclaimed, offbeat, documentaries such as: How The West Was Lost, The Dirty South, Rich Hall's Cattle Drive Gone Fishing, and the incomparable Continental Drifters where he explored the history of the road movie. He’s also found time to become a prolific author, but its live shows that really inspire him. “I get a lot of pleasure out of that finished product. But above all I love the fleeting nature of stand-up. When it's over, it's not coming back, and I love that ephemeral quality."

Rich Hall rides into town on Friday 15th March at The Corn Exchange www.brightondome.org

MEADOWLANDS FESTIVAL 2013 2 4T H 26 T H M AY BY BRAD MIDDLETON Meadowlands has always billed itself as a local festival for mainly local bands and why change when there are so many talented bands and musicians within close proximity? This year we get ska, indie, dance, folk and more spread over the three days in the glorious surroundings of Glynde Place near Lewes and it should be some weekend providing the weather stays good. Musical highlights, and that is what we are here to read about after all, are many and varied but briefly here are some of the acts to look out for if you manage to get your hands on a ticket. AK/DK presents us with a bizarre mixture of punk/dance with moments of kraut/motorik rhythms creating a whole new sound. BENT COUSIN are a fun loving cute-core duo who describe themselves as being like the ‘…Osmonds on cheap whizz.’ They promise to bring some sunshine even if it is cloudy overhead. One of the acts you must check out if you want to

dance is the great 11-piece jump-jive band FAT 45 who lay down some great sounds for a bit of a boogie! MARIKA HACKMAN sounds simply divine, taking folk back to the sound of the early 70s, think Syd Barrett type influences but delivered with the cool vocal style of Nico from the Velvet Underground, a sound sure to leave your reporter swooning if he’s lucky enough to get a ticket. MEOW MEOWS are a Brighton institution. Ian from Immediate on Sydney Street provides the rhythms on his bass, add in a great horn section and a couple of all-dancing, all-harmonizing female singers and you’ve got all the ingredients for a great chance for a skank to our favourite Brighton ska band. NORDIC GIANTS are a bizarre duo who perform live soundtracks to a series of short films, akin to the likes of Mogwai but with guest vocalists. OSCILLATOR is a Brighton super-group formed late last year who promise to make you move with

their electro-funk, psychedelic sound. Added on top of all that goodness is the impossibly good PHYSICS HOUSE BAND. They take their cue from the psychedelic explorers of the 60’s, the prog of the 70’s, the technical metal of the 80’s as well as the 90’s post-rock and then dragging all that into the twenty-first century to create a truly unique and contemporary sound. For tickets for this event get online or go visit Resident or the Dome or for those out of town get along to Octave Records or the Union Music Store in Lewes. For all the latest news check their twitter feed here: twitter.com/Meadowfest

24th - 26th May GLYNDE PLACE, LEWES Visit www.meadowlandsfestival.com for Tickets, be quick though, early birds are sold out!

YES, PRIME MINISTER STUART ROLT CATCHES UP WITH CRISPIN REDMAN

The dynamic between master and servant has been a staple of literature and theatre throughout time, constantly asking the question: “Who’s really in charge here?” Britain’s best fictional illustration of this was the massively popular 80’s sitcom Yes, Prime Minister, which saw Jim Hacker, an entertainingly useless Premier, battle against the perfidious meddling of his Cabinet Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby. The shows creators, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, reimagined their masterpiece as a stage production a couple of years ago, and now the revitalised show is on a UK tour. Offering a new generation this hilarious story of an arrogant public schoolboy, concerned only with preserving the status quo, eternally locked in battle with a state-educated beleaguered leader who naively believes experts should be running the nation.

ing in the Civil Service she’s more than capable of halting Appleby in his tracks, but there’s much familiar and welcoming territory remaining for fans of the original. Recently the conflict between the Government and the Civil Service hit the headlines, showing this type of power struggle is timeless, just like its depiction throughout the history of theatre. “This goes back to Molière and we’re used to this and everyone loves it. Also there’s a big class thing, which we’re all obsessed with in England, Jim Hacker having gone to a grammar school and the LSE, whereas Sir Humphrey went to Kings College Oxford and a boarding school. It’s similar to Mainwaring and his sergeant in Dad’s Army. It’s just a delightful English thing we have, so put that on top of the master servant situation and it’s irresistible”

But is there an element of jeopardy in resurrecting a classic that’s still remembered clearly and fondly by many, especially if it ends up appearing out of time? “We manage to slip in little topical things from the newspapers, but the fundamental things, on the political side, are much the same,” says Crispin Redman, who’s taking on the role of eloquent mandarin Sir Humphrey. “But where this particular relationship shows its teeth is it goes back to something that’s always in the psyche of the theatre, where you have the master, who is hapless and vain, and the servant, who is Machiavellian and tricky.“

It might be strange seeing this shadowy political environment recreated without Paul Eddington playing Hacker or Nigel Hawthorne’s Appleby, but the quality of the script, with its characterisations and innate significance, is incomparable. As such the reboot is almost seamless, but Redman isn’t trying to supply a simple Hawthorne impression for the audience. “He was the master. It was written for him. It’s a character that loves language and uses it to try and confuse Hacker all the time. I have three of these hugely long complicated speeches that Sir Humphrey has. But the audience love it. They are virtually egging the character on as he’s talking.”

The play has adjusted to the times, PR experts have taken over the face-saving burden of the Civil Servants, new character Clare is now ably fighting Hackers corner, with a degree specialis-

Since the original series there’ve been many outstanding political satires on TV, whether it’s the foul-mouthed The Thick Of It, which aimed for the jugular of a spin obsessed Labour Party, or The

New Statesmen taking a sideways swipe at sneering self-interested Tory MP’s in the 80’s, or Bremner, Bird and Fortune with their sneering cold-faced impressions, delivering cruelly distorted versions of current issues, all of them owe a debt to the ground broken by Yes, Prime Minister. “The Thick Of It was for a completely different audience, as it was so cynical, and rightly so. But Yes, Prime Minister is gentler and kinder. It’s more about the Civil Service and Prime Minister, where the Thick Of It is about nitty gritty of politics and how vain and hopeless it all is. One big advantage Jay and Lynn had was being able to draw on information from two insiders from the governments of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan, which gave them the insight to create a paranoia-fuelled world of blundering politicians that inadvertently find themselves dependent on people who aren’t necessarily more intelligent, just better informed. “We have a coalition at the moment, where they did at least try to do something for the national good. At the beginning there were high expectations, but it’s petered out a bit now, which is sad. The Sir Humphreys get hold of it. “ It turns out that the show’s arrival in Brighton, later this month, is something of a homecoming for Redman. “I’m looking forwards to coming home to Brighton. It’ll be nice to walk to work. The theatre is one of the nicest theatres in the country. It’s a beautifully designed Victorian theatre, it’s nearly everyone’s favourite touring venue.” Yes, Prime Minister runs at the Theatre Royal from Monday 18th Saturday 23rd March

COMEDY HIGHLIGHTS By Stuart Rolt

MARK THOMAS Komedia // Thursday 20th March

JACK DEE Brighton Dome // Friday 22nd March

Brighton has always been a hotbed of political radicalism, so where better to test out some new policies and ideas? Mark Thomas brings his vision of a fairer world to the Komedia on Thursday 20th March, in preparation for a new series of his Sony Award Winning Radio 4 show. There must be plenty of salacious inspiration for it right now. Only by winning hearts and minds, through his ferocious mix of comedy and old-fashioned investigative journalism, can the UK’s finest political comedian guide Britain through the mess it’s in.

Jack Dee, and the many layers of misery that pervade his life (such as his feckless kids, the stream of useless tradesmen he employs, or the vagaries of being completely surrounded by idiots), makes a welcome return to Brighton’s Dome on Friday 22nd March. He’s done pretty well out of his sour-faced view of the world, there’s been countless TV appearances, his own sitcom and a set of memoirs - Thanks For Nothing. This is moroseness being twisted out of all proportion, but don’t we just love him for it?

TERRY GAROGHAN The Old Market // Saturday 23rd March

CLARE SUMMERSILL Dome Studio Theatre // Sunday 24th March

Local legend Terry Garoghan returns to the stage at The Old Market, on Sat 23 Mar, with new show The Devil Keeps Tugging. Since the demise of Brighton: the Musical, which saw him become the de facto leader of the Cult Of Brighton 16 year run, Garoghan has been busy penning 13 new stories, coupled with 13 self-penned songs, all examining his relationship with the Devil. This performance will be accompanied by divine cellist Angie Wilson. It will also mark the launch of an album of songs from the show.

Asking difficult questions, then answering them herself, is Clare Summerskill at the Dome’s Studio Theatre on Sunday 24th March. Whether it’s being an actor, comedian, or singer, she brings a depth of intelligence and insight to all her performances, not least her play Hearing Voices, a touching look at a psychiatric ward and our attitudes towards mental illness. She’s currently stirring her frothy cocktail of stand-up and comedy songs for audiences up and down the country, encouraging Radio 4 Woman’s Hour to call her “a lesbian Victoria Wood!”

GUERRILLA FASHION BRIGHTON BY LUCY HALLETT IMAGES BY ADRIAN HOLLOWAY

My Saturday’s are usually spent nursing a hangover and staring mystified into an empty wallet, wondering how on earth I spent so much, so it was excitement aplenty that I hot-footed it down to The Guerilla Fashion Event II. Founded by gorgeous minx-of-the-moment Skye De La Mare and co-organised by the equally breath-taking Zoe Van Spyk, The Guerilla Fashion Event showcases risqué and edgy garments that would make your granny blush. Held at The Brighton Arts Club in Providence Place, the not-forprofit event pushes local designers, performers and artists into the limelight, resulting in a feast for the senses. As Fire breathers and Poi artists transformed the gloomy streets, mimicking the wild abandon of a carnival, you could be forgiven for thinking you may have had one drink too many and uttering ‘Toto, I don’t think we’re in Brighton anymore.’ Upon slipping indoors you were immersed into the alluring world of beautiful burlesque performers, jaw-dropping garments and the soulful sounds of homegrown talent. I noticed more than one member of the audience gaze adoringly as Sam Jordan performed his melodic tunes while the impossibly chic and talented Speakeasy Three, otherwise known as Corrinne, Nastazja and Elizabeth, not only hosted the event but had the room swinging as they belted out their sassy and unique brand of swing. However the unequivocal star of the show was fashion itself. The Guerilla Fashion event saw the launch of Trinkerbelle’s new range of stunning fetish head pieces and cute yet controversial jewellery, along with a clothing launch in the form of The Speakeasy Three’s line of glamorous and affordable Speakeasy Threads. Sacred Latex most definitely sexed it up with their fantastically provocative dresses, while Curve Couture’s incredible corsets caused a noticeable swoon amongst both the male and female audience members! Charles of London proved that punk and catwalk are a winning mix, while the sweet-shop inspired underwear of Sirens Rising cleverly amalgamated sexy and saccharine. Alisa Rollo’s bold styles and prints from around the world brought an element of the jet-set and Miss Venga’s designs demonstrated how real girls with bum and boobs aplenty could accentuate their assets. The event was a dizzying display of the seductive, edgy and beautiful, which will cement Guerilla Fashion’s welldeserved place as a ‘must see’ in the Brighton calendar. Brighton Arts Club, 43 Providence Place, Brighton.

THEATRE GUIDE This month has some fabulous shows for you. One of the standout shows has to be the University of Chichester Touring version of Jonathan Lzarson’s Iconic musical Rent, coming to the The Old Market on Saturday 16th March. This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Drama winning show is a tale of struggling artists and impoverished young New York bohemians. All living in the shadow of HIV and learning to survive and live for today, in a world where art thrives and everything good is priceless. Also at The Old Market on Tue 12th - Wed 13th is a rare chance to see Spymonkey’s deliciously demented gothic thriller: Cooped. A beautiful girl takes a job as a personal secretary to a mysterious recluse. But for how long can she ignore the unsettling rumours that surround her new employer, his ominous manservant Klaus and their ancient mansion? At the Dome Studio is Money The Game Show, on Wed 20th - Thu 21st, where you are invited to spend some time with hedge-fund managers turned performance artists, Casino and Queenie, as they share their stories of how to make (and lose) billions from economic downturn. Playing with £10,000 in real pound coins, you are invited to bet long, short and hedge in a series of high-stake games. A playful and politically sharp look at how the world economic system came to the precipice of total collapse.

The economic downturn has meant that all the Council members are out collecting our domestic rubbish now, so the Council chambers are playing host on Sat 30th for The April Fool’s Weekend Lecture with Dr Bramwell. This comic slideshow lecture draws on theatre, literature, art and film to show how historical tricksters and their spectacular pranks have helped shape culture and society. The question is: can we trust him to tell the whole truth? And is he really a doctor? In a more formal theatre setting is The Rise and Fall of Little Voice on Mon 4th - Sat 9th at The Theatre Royal, an Olivier awardwinning night of music, divas and romance, written and directed by Jim Cartwright. In this heart-warming tale, the titular Little Voice spends most of her time hidden away with her late father’s record collection, perfecting her astonishing impersonations. Her extraordinary talent remains a secret until she is overheard by local talent scout Ray. He’s convinced that this is his last chance for fame and fortune. But has anyone asked Little Voice what she wants? Following two sell-out West End seasons, the classic political satire, Yes, Prime Minister comes to the Theatre Royal on Mon 18th - Sat 23rd. The original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production and now the Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back in this hilarious new play. In a world of spin, BlackBerrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?

BN1 CHATS WITH... The dying days of winter are a strange time to release a summery indie-pop album, but it turns out Theme Park’s eponymous debut is the perfect antidote for all the gloom.

Imagine a sexier Friendly Fires, or Vampire Weekend with proper tunes, then you’ll be on the right track to where these lads sit, but it’s an early release’s percussive richness which caused comparisons with New Wave masters Talking Heads, and it’s a tag that’s stuck. The offending song Milk was a dazzling example of what the band’s capable of. A buoyant multi-layered delight that gets into head, just like all lively, guitar-pop should. “It wasn’t intentional, it’s the first song we put online,” vocalist and guitarist Marcus Haughton tells us. “I don’t think people will recognise Talking Heads when they listen to the album. I wouldn’t say we’re huge fans, but they are a great band.” Admittedly both bands share similar territory, but we’re increasingly obsessed with resurrecting the past, so many pundits are happy to simply draw comparisons with past bands rather than attributing them their own identity, which is a shame because Theme Park’s album sounds so fresh and exciting. It’s got flawless production, deliciously funky bass, esca-

THEME PARK lating choruses and musicians with a clear mandate to create catchy perfect-pop tunes. Even when they venture into experimental territory, it still sounds coherent. What we’ve got here is a band very much in control. “We went into the studio with a specific idea of what we the end product to be, we wanted a specific vibe to it, but we didn’t plan each track individually.” Nestled amongst the optimistic upbeat indie-funk, is a joyful party-starter, produced by Ed Macfarlane. “We’d done a lot of tracks with Luke Smith, but we wanted to be a little something a bit different with on one of them, so our label suggested Ed from Friendly Fires as a producer, so they asked if he was up for messing around in the studio, we all went in and ‘Tonight’ came about.” Lyrically much of it is about getting battered during the best night ever, sometimes even enjoying the company of a pretty young thing. The message is that it’s all going to be alright, at least for the next three minutes. Whilst there may be better debut albums throughout history, there’s few as fun as Theme Park’s. It’ll be firing up student discos and festival fields all summer. Theme Park’s Album is out now. You can also catch them at The Haunt on Wednesday 13th March

Cocktail Master Class

HOTEL DU VIN

LASS A MASTER C ONCOCTION C T C FE ER P E H T R FO There are worse things in the world to experience than a cocktail master class at the sumptuous Hotel Du Vin (being a horse-lover and a PR person for some of the major supermarkets at the moment springs to mind), so I wasn’t exactly dragging my feet on the cold and miserable Tuesday when my class took place. Hotel Du Vin is two shakes of a lambs tail away from the beach and South Laines, making it a good spot for some post lunch/pre dinner drinks. The decor throughout the hotel, restaurant and adjoining bar is an eccentric amalgamation of mock Tudor splendour and très chic Parisian bistro. This hotchpotch of styles shouldn’t work, but for some reason it very much does; particularly successful is the warm exposed wood and luxurious fittings that dominate the bar area. I was greeted by the lovely Ben Manchester, who is the head honcho at the bar, and creator of the weird and wonderful cocktails that litter the extensive menu. He tells me that absolutely anything can inspire him to create a new cocktail, and that it was Mexico that heavily influenced ‘The Jalisco Inferno’- a phenomenal blend of watermelon, chilli, coriander and tequila- that takes its name from the home of the tequila, a state in Mexico called Jalisco. Now I’m pretty au fait with cocktails, and the delight that derives from tasting something truly unique, however this was something else! Clean, refreshing, undoubtedly boozy, but with a strong

undercurrent of heat, I was tempted to kidnap Ben, stockpile the necessary ingredients, and at gunpoint force him to make cocktails day and night. Hotel Du Vin must have at some point realised that attempted kidnap would be quite a natural reaction to sampling these liquid masterpieces, so to avoid any potential problems they have started doing cocktail master classes, held by Ben, where you not only get to drink a total of three cocktails (a happy occasion by any standards), two of them you will make yourself! They have a variety of themed classes coming up with a Gin master class on April the 4th at 6.30pm, Rum on May 2nd, an intriguing Herb and Spice theme on June 6th and Tequila on July 4th, all for the very reasonable price of £20 a head. He caters for groups of 2 upto 20, and the classes provide a boozy, interactive, fun and informative way to kick off an evening. I was quite looking forward to trying my hand at kidnapping, but instead you might find me attending ALL of these instead! By Lucy Hallett

THE TROLL’S PANTRY

“Burgers and more made with seasonal Sussex produce” This modest claim belies the true magnitude of the oral delight awaiting you at the Troll’s Pantry. The ‘Wild Range’ 35 day aged English Longhorn burgers are lovingly handmade & cooked to order, using seasonal local ingredients, as are many of the condiments and salads…even the buns are baked daily by the Troll’s ‘humble assistant’! The company’s ethos is to only use animal products that are fully traceable, local, and from sources that go ‘above and beyond’ matters of animal welfare; to minimise environmental impact, support local businesses and produce fresh homemade food to the highest standard. This obviously appeals to many a conscientious Brightonian, me included. You may note the lack of vegetarian options, but due high wastage these were removed from the menu, in line with keeping the promise of limited waste. Due to increased demand and lack of manpower – all the work is done by one man, after all – chips aren’t even on the menu at the moment. Since its setup in Spring 2012 the Troll’s Pantry has gained somewhat of a cult following, with hordes of hungry folk queuing up to take a bite of the troll’s wares, which often sell out ahead of closing time. This is no mean feat in Brighton, where there are burger bars a ’plenty, some of which already have great reputations, along with most other types of global cuisine. We really are very spoiled. The secret, I think, is to keep it simple, but fresh – and I don’t just mean in the culinary sense. Of course, the quality of the meat is imperative too – it’s also what The Coal Shed, Brighton’s new darling of the steak world use, and Gregg Wallace eats there! The ‘Seasonal Specials’ are what seem to get the burger connoisseurs chomping at the bit (horse pun intended). There are two mainstays on the menu, available as singles or doubles – The Imperial (St. Giles cheese, pickles, American mustard, ketchup and seasonal salad) for £5/£7.50, and The Smoky Mountain (Bourbon bacon jam, homemade BBQ sauce, smoked foresters cheese, caramelised onions, garlic mayo and seasonal salad) for £7/£9.50. Seasonal specials come into rotation as and when – to stay in the know look out for regular updates on Facebook and Twitter. These start at £7 for a single and £9.50 for a double. On my first visit, which I’m embarrassed to say wasn’t until

February just gone; I had The Shaman (sage and honey bacon jam, beetroot and horseradish slaw, garlic mayo, beetroot ketchup, Sussex goat’s cheese.). I’d been closely monitoring the Facebook page to pick my moment carefully, and lay in wait for my perfect burger to come along. Anyone who knows me is aware of my almost fetishlike obsession with pork products, especially bacon, so it’s no surprise I jumped at the chance to sample an offering slathered in bacon jam. I have a slightly healthier respect for beetroot and goat’s cheese and so I could resist no longer… The first thing that struck me is just how meltingly soft the whole thing was; the glazed brioche-style bun and the silky meat falling seamlessly into my mouth was a truly rapturous experience and not one I’ve associated with tastings of burgers past. Aptly, Nick Cave’s “Babe, You Turn Me On” wafted through my earbuds as I devoured the beast. Goat’s cheese, beetroot and horseradish are all bold flavours and one could be forgiven for thinking together they might produce too strong a flavour, but they were incredibly mellow with just a hint of each shining through almost one by one. The result of the troll’s foraging and potion-concocting was simply stunning. I can say, hand on heart, that this was the best burger to ever pass my lips. Next time it’s a double. Now, trolls aren’t known for their sociable nature, but I managed to glean a few words from him about what’s next for the pantry. “I am merely a vessel exercising the will of the Troll King Mojo” he rumbled. “Popularity of the Troll’s mighty burgers has grown massively in recent weeks to the point where keeping up with demand has become difficult. Because of this the exalted King Troll has decreed that operations be moved to a pub, where phase two of the master plan can commence. This shall pave the way for phase three. The final onslaught and enslavement of humanity to the rightful troll overlords.” Whichever pub has managed to nab The Troll’s Pantry (as I understand it, there were plenty of offers) has just secured its future as the home of Brighton’s true gourmet burger. As for me, I’ll be down there as soon as possible - this type of troll I can get down with. GIGGLING SQUID

Having heard such great things about The Giggling Squid, I was genuinely excited about my visit, however my meal left me little to laugh about. The restaurant itself is exactly the sort of place you would want to bring friends… exposed wood and brick walls are complemented by minimalist decor, giving the place a very relaxed but warm feel. We were served by the brilliant Nok, who made us feel utterly at ease and looked-after without the merest hint of being stifled. He recommended us some starters and in part I would say he got it right. They were competitively priced at between £5 and £7.95 and the presentation was fantastic: intricate and colourful these were plates that looked like they were on their way to a festival, and a flamboyant festival at that! The salt and pepper squid was some of the best I’ve had, and the very liberal sprinkling of chillies made it a course that came with a side portion of bragging rights. The duck canapés, although a little dry, provided a healthy option for those wanting to expand their culinary horizons but not their waistlines. However the scallops, while well cooked, got lost in the sea of spice and salad in which they nestled. The mains arrived at our table and replicated the beautiful presentation of their predecessors, but there were issues. The

Lamb Shank Massaman (£10.95) was woefully overcooked, to the point of the meat sticking steadfastly to the bone and my vegetables were underdone. My dining companion’s sizzling seafood medley (£9.95) was good to look at but lacked the spicing and flavours necessary to elevate it to the realms of great. I don’t really know what to make of my first trip to The Giggling Squid in Hove. The service was perfect, the atmosphere second to none, and at points the food was very tasty. Countless friends rant and rave about the sumptuous dishes they‘ve eaten at this charmingly decked-out eatery, I can only assume the chef was having an off day on my visit. So if you throw a Giggling Squid in my direction, I may not be laughing quite yet, but think I may be on my next visit. By Lucy Hallett

FILM

A PASSION FOR PICTURES: JONATHAN GLENDENING By Wayne Imms

Brighton-born and still based in this great creative city, Jonathan Glendening grew up making films, inspired by some of my own favourites, winning his first award when he was only 14. He went on to work his way up through the film industry mostly by, as he described, “being a tea boy in the day time and an auteur by night”. Jonathan was director Nicholas Hytner’s assistant on The Madness of King George and Robert De Niro’s research assistant on Frankenstein. He made several award-winning short films, before his first feature, Summer Rain. Since then, the filmmaker has directed the likes of Steven Berkoff, Simon MacCorkindale, Robert Englund (Freddie Kruger) and Tom Felton (Malfoy in the Harry Potter films). He recently directed a TV pilot, Undercover, and is currently completing the screenplay for his next film. Here, Jonathan tells me of his clear enthusiasm and his filmmaking experience. Tell us about when and how you developed a passion for film, and at which point did you decide that you wanted to make films? I vividly remember early cinema trips; crying at Bambi in Evesham, singing along to The Jungle Book at the Odeon in Worcester, but the most important trip was definitely seeing Jaws in Eastbourne in 1975 when I was 5. I know I saw it at least twice on its initial release, as I remember anticipating Ben Gardner’s head dropping through the hull (and scaring the bubbles out of Matt Hooper), by holding tightly onto my dad’s arm and yet still screaming even though I knew the shock was coming. Like many film-makers, it was ultimately the influence of Spielberg and Lucas that opened me to the possibility of actually making my own films. I was a Star Wars kid and collected all the toys, so when I saw The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark on TV, which featured a very nuts and bolts illustration of how films are made, I decided to just do it. I borrowed a school friend’s dad’s Super-8mm cine camera and we went into the garden and made Star Wars AND The Empire Strikes Back – with my toys, on a 3 minute 20 second roll of film. It took 4 weeks for Kodak to process and return the film in a little yellow packet; the excitement of projecting the image to watch it for the first time was incredible. Of course, as an eleven year old, with no understanding of cinematography or cameras, it was mostly badly framed and severely out of focus, but with the required self-delusion of someone in the creative field, I thought it was amazing.... so I made another, and another.

Were you inspired by any particular filmmakers? The great thing about growing up during Spielberg’s golden era (Jaws, Raiders, ET, Close Encounters) – is that, through Spielberg, you were introduced to all the filmmakers he grew up on like Hitchcock, Capra, Ford and Michael Curtiz. I devoured films by all these filmmakers through my teens and, of course, you discover the darker edge of his contemporaries like Coppola and Scorsese. I did get quite hung up Hitchcock more than any other, though, particularly as he was British, and his films were perfect illustrations of cinema by design and how editing is telling the story through ‘the cut’. Tell me about your first experience of directing and what you learnt from the process. My first live-action film was a 3 minute 20 second thriller. I was 13, in which a businessman (Toby Merritt) – aged 13, is being chased by a black clad masked assassin (Lloyd Alexander) – aged 13 – and it was mostly constructed in camera, shot by shot. That is how many young filmmakers perceive directing to be – just choosing the camera angles, but the real art is talking to actors, guiding their performance. I occasionally lecture film students and that’s one of my main bits of advice, to learn about acting. No matter how beautifully shot your film is, no matter how arty it is... if the performances aren’t good, the only review you will get is that the acting was lousy. I understand that a film named Summer Rain, shot in Brighton, was your first feature. I gather it did well at various festivals. Is recognition important to you? Summer Rain won quite a few awards at film festivals around the world, including 3 Best Film Trophies. I was invited to many of these festivals, so I got to go to Rome, Savannah, New York and meet lots of fabulous filmmakers, who I would otherwise never have met. The awards themselves aren’t particularly important to me, although it is nice to have validation that people like your work, but when independent films can get lost in the system and sit unseen on shelves, you need ammunition to find an audience. So, when the film had garnered 8 awards and 3 nominations, it got a DVD release. An audience is more likely to watch a film with a few award crests on its cover than none. However, sadly with the demise of HMV, there is nowhere in the real world to buy the film, so I bought ALL the remainder stock, which I sell from my website – www.glendening.co.uk Sum up your favourite filmmaking experience – and your worst. Feel free to frankly express yourself here, if you’re up for it. The best has to be Summer Rain – we shot it on 35mm, during the fantastic summer of 98. The cast and crew were very much a family and we were all trying to make something special. I produced, wrote and directed the film, and it was very much a labour of love. I look back on that film very fondly, as I was so naive I could enjoy it. Of course, with more experience and the benefit of hindsight, there are plenty of things I would change, but it’s a very honest film and made

RICHARD UNGAR:- JONATHAN DIRECTING 13HRS

with sincerity. 13Hrs was also a great experience, because, although we were on a very small budget, we almost managed to serve the great script by Adam Phillips in a way it deserved. If only we had a little more budget, we could have really done it justice. As it is, we came pretty close and I’m really proud of it. My current fave is Undercover, a comedy TV pilot I shot last summer. It was hard work, but fun in the best way. The worst experiences are when producers have expectations that can’t possibly be met by the resources, budget, time and facilities that they provide. On one film I did, I was scheduled to do the 8 page action finale’ in 4 hours! Then they complain it doesn’t look like Die Hard. For you, what’s the best aspect of filmmaking? There are many wonderful aspects to filmmaking; the camaraderie of a film set, the collaboration with many talented cast and crews – but I think my favourite thing is constructing the film in the edit. It’s cosy; you’re sitting down with a nice cup of tea, having suffered the slings and arrows of the incredibly hard process of making a film, and now you can design it and construct it in comfort. You get to put your shots into the order that they are supposed to go in, and you get to uncover the secrets that only you noted during filming. So, if you don’t get an edit of your footage the film can definitely fall apart without your input into this vital process. But, the absolute best bit is screening the final film for the first time, to see the artifice all come together to create an emotional journey.

What tips would you suggest to anyone wanting to work in the film industry? I have 3 main tips: a) Make tea for anybody and everybody! Work as a runner and learn from every person you come into contact with. Many of my industry contacts today came from my time making them tea. b) If you want to be a director, learn about acting. c) Join BECTU (the film industry union), as there are sharks out there who won’t/ don’t pay, BECTU will help you avoid them and if you don’t they will help you pursue your fee. d) Keep working on the script, no matter how perfect you think it is - it isn’t. e) Don’t try and make Die Hard, when your budget is the loose change in your pocket; suit your project to the resources available. f) Collaborate g) enjoy it. Finally, what do you have in the pipeline, which you can reveal to us here? One of the many problems with films is that they can fall apart at any moment, even during filming so best not to announce anything until it’s finished! But, I’m fortunate that I have three scripts in ‘active development’ with companies and, after a successful project (Undercover) with Big Man Films, we’re working together again on what I hope will be my next feature film. Also in the pipeline is another collaboration with Adam Phillips, who wrote 13Hrs. Whatever my next film actually is, I’ve learnt the hard way, that it will be a film that is close to my heart and worth devoting 6 months to a year actually endeavouring to make!

MAKING A LASTING IMPRESSION

One event that’s guaranteed to make a lasting impression in Brighton is the annual Tattoo Convention. Now in its 6th year, it has established itself as one of the best of the many that are held across the country. Attracting some of the world’s leading artists, as well as thousands of ink aficionados, the event has outgrown its previous home at the Racecourse and moved to the more spacious, but less quirky Hilton. Judging by the turnout, it was a move the two-day inkfest needed to make, but in doing so it has sacrificed some of its charm as, on the surface at least, it now looks much like any other exhibition. Of course, when you get under the skin, this is no ordinary event. The exhibits here are living canvases and the range of indelible art covers everything from icons such as the Golf GTI to Jesus himself. This year, it was noticeable that monochrome tats were as popular as ever, as were the number of bold, large pieces being

worked on. Scripts and lettering was another trend much in evidence. But there’s more to this event than just tattoos. For the first time, it also featured a not-for-the-squeamish area dedicated to ‘body modification’ such as implants and scarification and there was a burgeoning number of lifestyle exhibitors, selling everything from tattoo-culture inspired clothes and jewellery to cupcakes. With more Brighton-based artists than ever before at the show and new studios like Kemptown’s Gilded Cage opening in the last few months, there’s no doubt tattooing has become an indelible part of Brighton’s culture. And it would be no surprise that in a year or two’s time, the convention, like many of its participants, will be running out of space. By Gary Marlowe

THE DIRT WITH MARK EDE Alert! Something’s gone horribly wrong! I’m now teaching at a University once a week. Music Management. Well, why not? It’s kinda what I do the other 6 days of the week and who knows the rules anymore? Certainly not the best brains at HMV, eh? But where in my life plan is the part about getting up at 8am and being committed to being in the same place for 8 hours, week in, week out? I thought those days were long gone but, once a week at least, that treadmill of discipline returns to haunt me. Very worrying. Back on the day job, the rise of our artist Jo Harman continues unabated with a headline feature ‘our tip for 2013’ in high street blues bible Classic Rock Blues this week and something like 16 festival bookings, a number of them headliners, now in the book in both UK and Europe. There comes a point in an artist’s career where suddenly you stop having to hustle for gigs and media attention and, instead, people start ringing you. That’s where we’ve got to with Jo. But equally that’s where the hard work begins, trying to exploit and maximise the buzz. In the blues community at least, Jo is everyone’s tip for 2013 and with a debut studio record ‘Dirt on My Tongue’ (a title which, by the way, prompted the remark, ‘a bit strongo, bongo’ from Jo’s Grandad!) set to drop in March, the pressure is most d efinitely on. But rather it that way than no interest I guess! Our management company are also now happy to say we are now working with Tommy Blaize, the voice of Strictly Come Dancing. Tommy’s as good as it gets in terms of male vocal talent in this country and his bands CV reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of popular music. So, plenty to keep us busy

here at BiG I AM Towers for the foreseeable...Elsewhere, good also to see our friends at Yellowfish doing so well recently with the number of famed and feted artists booking into the semi-secret Lewes studios increasing by the week. Though owner Ross McCraken is very discrete by nature (we’ll soon change that!) I also know Sony have commissioned the famous Airstream ‘Silver Bullet’ Yellowfish mobile recording studio for use by one of the most famous bands in the world (no, we can’t say but, no, it’s not the Rolling Stones). This seems like a good thing, surely, were it not for Ross deciding that this news gives him an excuse to undertake a not entirely necessary £100k worth of re-fit spend on the console and desk. As with music management, I guess the more ‘success’ one has, the more one has to spend to maintain it? Hey ho. Meanwhile back on earth, I’ve been spending more time in Shoreham, where we have an office, and have recently discovered a great multi arts space called ‘West Street Loft’ in Shoreham’s West Street, not to be confused with (Wild) West Street in Brighton, perhaps. I think its discovery is simply going to serve to be an excuse to have a BiG i AM party any time soon. It’s quite intimate, it’s quite undiscovered, and it’s certainly got a vibe. So watch this space. Time to celebrate. Something or other. I’ll see if Ross wants to pick up the tab. www.bigiam.co.uk
