BRIGHTON DURING MAY WITH JOEL WINDELS
Pasty white Brits have been flocking to Brighton’s wonderful seafront and scenic parks in their thousands for the past couple of weeks now, idly throwing their Frisbees for five minutes at a time before noshing on their elaborate barbeque picnics. It’s as if Spring couldn’t be bothered to show up and Summer showed up to the party two months early like an overzealous but welcome guest. Funny what a spot of sunshine can do for public wellbeing. With the sunshine also comes festivals, and May will see a plethora of such events held in our festival-obsessed city. Kicking things off is the Brighton Festival, which runs from the 7th to the 29th of May, and claims to offer three weeks of unrivalled arts celebration. Running concurrently is the Brighton Fringe Festival, which begins on the same day but runs a day longer, perhaps just to spite the other one. This slightly-but-pointlessly longer festival features a number of events, including cabaret, comedy, dance, theatre, film, literature and plenty more. There is another festival also scheduled for this month, as The Great Escape returns with its handful of famous headliners and an endless list of bands you’ve never heard of. This is never such a bad thing however, and it’ll be a great chance to discover great new acts when the 300+ artists play through 12th-14th of May around various venues in town. Check BN1 for everything you need for all three festivals, or find out even more on their respective websites. It wouldn’t be a Brighton monthly news piece without a mention of some obscure car convention held on Madeira Drive, and believe it or not, the MG Regency Run is set for the 8th of the month. It is exactly what it sounds like: lots of different MGs on a long bit of road, so head on down if that’s the kind of thing you like to do on a Sunday. If you live in the centre of town and enjoy getting woken up on a Saturday morning by all manner of shouting, singing and loud noises then you can look forward to the Children’s Parade on the 7th, which is actually a rather pleasant celebration of something or other, and features hundreds of kids dressed brightly in garish costumes all blaring their mouths off in unison. Don’t miss it. Elsewhere in Brighton, scores of artists are inviting you disgusting scumbags into their homes to ogle at their work and even kindly offer you the chance to buy it if you like. This year marks the thirtieth year the event has been staged and will run every weekend of May. Check aoh.org. uk for more information. Outside the city we also have an FA Cup final, a Champions League final, the Premier League showdown, three Formula One grand prix including the famous Monte Carlo circuit, presumably a bit of golf and other sports, and of course a bloody Royal wedding. More importantly we have the referendum on the Alternative Vote on May 5th, which truly is an important day in modern politics and I urge you all to take part in it. Unless you vote ‘no’ of course. I’ll be voting no with my second choice. Oh yeah, I should probably mention that May 21st is going to be Judgement Day in the eyes of a significant religious and oddball minority, a precursor to the ultimate Apocalypse of mankind, which itself is scheduled for October. So keep that date free in your diary boys and girls in this action-packed and lovely ‘Spring’ month.

MUSIC WEEK AWARDS The Concorde2 has once again been nominated for a prize, this time they’ve been shortlisted to win an award for ‘Best Venue’ as part of the Music Week Awards. They are up against some reputable competition including the O2 Academy Leeds and The Royal Albert Hall. This just proves that Brighton’s No.1 music venue continues to get national recognition and it is an achievement in its own right to be nominated in such a category, so hats off once again to the Concorde2. BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2011
GET CARTER Forty years ago London hard-man Jack Carter went back home to investigate the suspicious death of his brother. What followed is a bloody tale of redemption, retribution, and brotherhood that remains one of the most iconic gangster films of all time. This year director James Weisz marks that anniversary by bringing to the Brighton Fringe Festival stage John Holloway’s adaption of the grimy, bestselling novel that started it all. Starring Nick Bartlett (Gangs of New York), Ross Gurney-Randall (Follow Me) and Seth Morgan (Winner of Best Actor award 2007). With 9 weeks of heats, a final at Eastbourne’s Extreme Festival, and twenty-four groups taking part, this year’s Battle of The Bands is shaping up to be the town’s must attend event of the year. 2010 winners Spaniels Ears will open proceedings on May 15th at TJ’s nightclub and will be followed over the nine weeks by bands with styles ranging from Hip Hop to Screamo and Pop Punk to Ska. The final in July will see the qualifying bands play to a crowd of happy sunburnt drunks on Eastbourne seafront. Brilliant. The winners will receive recording time at the prestigious Sussex Academy of Music. Tickets for the heats are £3. Under 18s are welcome. More information will be available on our website. OUI LOVE TOUR Heard of New French Wave? No? Well you soon will. This May 14th the annual Oui Love tour is returning to Brighton as part of The Great Escape Festival to introduce us to the pioneers of this exciting genre. The tour will see French band Team Ghost, who are credited with inventing chillwave, and the alter ego of singer/producer Frederic Riviere; Anoraak, team up to play six nights across some of the UK’s best venues. With mega stars like Daft Punk hailing from across the pond it’s obvious that France has something to offer. Missing this would be a very, very bad idea. May 14th — The Great Escape Festival. CHAIN & THE GANG This promises to be some show with the return to these shores of Ian Svenonius, the genius singer and political visionary behind such greats as the National of Ulysses, the Make-Up and Weird War, and his incendiary blasts of politico-punk/soul. The man is a legend pure and simple. What sort of band he will bring over is shrouded in mystery as the 2009 debut and this year’s new release has featured a clutch of highly important collaborators such as Calvin Johnson of the great Beat Happening as well as whole host of other like-minded US indie stars. If that weren’t enough this show also has the great London based indie stars Comet Gain playing their indiepunk-soul which is sure to get a lot of people excited including me! FUCK THE FESTIVAL Not exactly an alternative to the Brighton Festival which is priced out of many of our reader’s range this is more of a showcase for the cities underground scene. We are promised music and poetry as well as DJ’s and all manner of experimental shenanigans, it’s sure to be a good night’s entertainment. Agatha & The Christies are a two-piece garage punk band who are obsessed with all things fuzz and sinister, they peddle an anarcho-political breed of lyricism which just adds to their general brilliance. Besides them we have a whole host of poets and music which should make for an interesting night. Get along, donate the fiver entry fee, and support the local scene. I never really understood why Rolo Tomassi made such a huge impact on the indie music media when they first started – sure, they are great but that’s half the problem. A band that sounds like an even more frenzied, experimental Melt-Banana quite clearly just don’t belong in the NME no matter how much we would love them too, but thank god they did though as it bought their music to the attention of a whole new generation of kids, who would never had had the opportunity to have their minds blown by this awesome group. Without a new record in three years though tonight promises to be a plough through their best moments so if you haven’t had the chance to see them, now is your chance and what’s more it’s at the Green Door! John Darnielle’s indie/folk vehicle has been around for years now but finally seems set for the big time with their fourteenth album All Eternals Deck, released last month, through Merge Records, home of the mighty Superchunk but more pertinently the huge Arcade Fire. If Darnielle plays his cards right this could be the year they finally break the big time and what better way to see them than at a small club like Coalition. Go now and in a couple of years you’ll be able to impress all of your friends with stories of tonight.
A group you either love or hate, I think… I side with the latter as to me they are nothing more than a poor man’s Flaming Lips. They lack the pop sensibility and simple joy the Lips have in abundance but that still hasn’t stopped them achieving huge success for a band who occasionally vanish up their own experimental hole never to return. However, I realise that some people love and worship them so doubtless you will ignore the musings of a middleage hack and will have already booked your tickets for this huge show. FUNERAL PARTY CONCORDE2, MAY 26TH
A post-punk dance group who came together in Whittier, California in 2005 they have already had a pretty entertaining career. Starting out, without any instruments (they used to regularly borrow gear off either relatives or other bands who they were sharing bills with), they grew to prominence as a result of playing a lot of parties in their neighbourhood and were soon signed up to Fearless Records, home briefly to the legendary At The Drive-In. This soon however collapsed as the band garnered interest from none other than Sony whom they shortly signed a deal with and who they have remained with to this day and who have just released their debut studio album The Golden Age of Knowhere.

FESTIVAL FRENZY With Brighton hosting dozens of festivals throughout the year and Britain seemingly having gone festival crazy over the past decade, it is only apt that BN1 provide a quick run-down of the some the different places you could find yourself at this year. In Brighton itself we have the Fringe Festival, Brighton Festival and the Great Escape all running this May. The former two are a celebration of art across a wide variety of mediums, while the latter is more focused on new music. Each offers something a little different, and are broad enough to accommodate pretty much anyone’s tastes, aside from those of you freaks out there with obscure fetishes that we won’t go into here. In July the city will see the wonderful Paddle Around the Pier return, with its excellent free-to-enter range of activities on show, covering both the land and the sea. The festival promises to be even more jam-packed with events than last year, so you can expect to muck about on BMXs as you listen to some live music and paddle in the sea, all the while stuffing your face with some locally-produced delicious cuisine simultaneously, of course. July will also welcome the Shakedown festival, a non-camping, music-focused event with an impressive lineup, which is all set kick off at Stanmer Park on the 9th. Twenty-five miles down the road is Eridge Park, which will host the second Playgroup Festival this August, Small in scale but big in character, the festival is much more about the carefree attitude and friendly atmosphere than most other events, so this one definitely

caters to the more relaxed punters out there. Also more focused on its vibe is the Secret Garden Party, a wild and weird festival held in East Anglia. The silly nonsense associated with the ever-changing event is what keeps people so intrigued and coming back for more, and even with the likes of Blondie and Milo featuring on the lineup, Secret Garden Party is absolutely nothing to do with music (in a good way). It comes with a BN1 seal of recommendation. Also with this stupid made-up seal are the Rockness festival in Scotland, set to take place in June, and the DotDotDot festival, which is scattered amongst Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester and will happen in late May. Rockness has won a number of prestigious awards, and despite having put together an amazing lineup featuring the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Kasabian, it is still almost sure to retain that lovely atmosphere it is so famous for, and will forever be a quirky and lovable ‘small festival’ to us. DotDotDot is a more urban affair, but with the artists they’ve managed to book, such as Hurts and The Joy Formidable, we’re sure this festival is going to be off the chain. Finally, there are the big hitters like Reading and Glastonbury. Despite bland lineups, increasing competition, sky-rocketing prices and flagging innovations, these goliaths are showing no sign of losing public interest and any criticism levied at them by myself are surely in vain. Last year the cruel cynicism in my Glastonbury preview was far too short-sighted, as the festival was a defining year in its glorious history and the beautiful weather and astonishing performances meant it was a weekend to remember for many years to come. These festivals are popular for a reason, and I can tell you with a great deal of experience that both Reading and Glasto, as well as all the other notoriously good festivals (Bestival, Isle of Wight etc.) are sure to be as fantastic as they ever were when they are staged this Summer. Now all you have to do is find the time and money to go to them all. You might need a time machine too. By Joel Windels

MAY 2011 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL
PREVIEWING BRIGHTON FESTIVAL The Brighton Festival is never all about the music but this year we are lucky enough to have a couple of real legends playing and even if tickets do cost a lot of money it could be worth investigating. Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry practically invented dub reggae along with his peer King Tubby and has produced or recorded with pretty much every figure on the scene since his first record came out in 1972. He had however been toying around in the studio and in live performance since the mid-1960s by which point he was already in his thirties! Now without the hang-ups of drinking booze or smoking pot he has become increasingly prolific in recent years – releasing nine albums in the last five years – he has continued to plot an interesting course. Now firmly encamped in the dancehall scene he has worked with some pretty strange collaborators including the much under-rated Andrew WK on the 2008 album Repetence. A proper legend that we are lucky to be able to see at the Dome on 20th May with tickets still available and priced between £15-25. The next man, like Perry, is an absolute legend and originator. John Cale is the man who made those old Velvet Underground records so unique with his classically trained viola. With a specially produced set based around the themes of home and exile, specifically themed for this one-off show, expect a showcase of some of the highlights of his near fifty year association with music. He plays, again, at the Dome on 23rd May with tickets again available for the price of between £15-25. It is sure to be intriguing to see what he plays. By Bradford Middleton

AND THE HORSE YOU RODE IN ON A SEQUENCE OF SERIOUS FOLLIES
Since their creation in 1993, Told by an Idiot have effortlessly established a worldwide reputation with a series of increasingly clever and unusual productions. The company produces work that is hilarious, poignant and always breaking new artistic ground, whilst recalcitrantly discarding the orthodox practices of mainstream theatre production. Their politically emotive new commission for the Brighton Festival, in association with the Barbican, sees the company holding a series of events at the Brighton Dome from Tuesday 17th to Saturday 21st May. Their new show, And
The Horse You Rode In On, is delivered in Told by an Idiot’s distinctive style in a new and unsettling direction. Although archly comic, this is a menacing tale of maladroitness extremes. Apparently inspired by Hitchcock’s Sabotage and the writings of Günter Grass this piece carefully scrutinises the delicate balance between faith and reason as it shows us just what extreme measures people will take for their beliefs. One of the motifs of the production is taking a familiar reference point in our culture and distorting it out of all recognition, most markedly in their depiction of a certain well-known rabbit and his
attempts to stop an alien blowing up the earth. This is raw social commentary at its very best. It’s political satire that ignores mocking showboating governmental sound-bites and deals instead with how we all individually adjust our morals and attitudes to reflect our personal situations. Don’t let the copious amounts of slapstick violence fool you, there is a serious message hidden beneath all this cartoonesque joviality. However, this production goes far beyond the simple presentation of a theatrical play, no matter how emotive and
provocative it may be, and allows the audience to make a contribution to the creative process. There will be several workshops during their stay at the Dome, where people will get the opportunity to fashion their own version of the main show. Also there are plans for workshops and discussion panels will get the chance to voice and develop their ideas. These interactive elements have proved to be an extremely popular central element to the company’s work, and are a wonderful opportunity for anyone with a real interest in collaborative theatre. MAY 2011 INTERVIEW — HOWE GELB
BN1 INTERVIEW
HOWE GELB BY STUART ROLT
Giant Sand and Devon Sproule 19th May at 8pm Concert Hall £16, £18, Festival standby £10
Are you doing any other shows in Europe?
I have so many variations, there are a couple of solo shows, and there are Giant Sand shows at festivals in France. Then there are shows that I do with another band I have from Spain. That’s a followup to my Snow Angel record, which had all-Canadian musicians and a gospel choir. Now I have the next solo record which is with flamenco gypsy artists. How do you keep track of it all?
It used to be that I mixed things up every night, when I had only one band, to instigate the evening and keep us on our toes. I gambled that would fuel the band. Now it’s different band setups rather than different songs, but I don’t keep track, I’m confused in a wonderful way every night wondering what set of songs we‘re doing, who I’m working with and what’s going to happen. It’s like sitting in front of the TV channel-switching endlessly. What is your creative process like? Howe Gelb is a true musical renegade. His left-field prairie visions, coupled with an everpresent dry lyrical wit, have fashioned a body of work that spans almost every musical style imaginable. Over the years he’s belligerently paid little heed to musical fashion or vapid celebrity culture, instead choosing to create a back-catalogue that contains a considerable number of classic albums. Brighton Festival is celebrating their artistry with an exciting concert at the Dome. We got Gelb on the phone to talk about the upcoming show and to find out how he still manages to be so inventive.
12
You travel with a number of different bands, which one are you bringing to Brighton?
We’re playing as a five piece; this band has been rooted in Denmark since 2002. Except for me and the bass player, who live in Tucson, the band all live in Denmark. How did you team up with musicians from Denmark?
I ended up falling in love with a woman from Denmark, and then we had a baby over there. After living there for a few months, I just started collecting people to play with. I thought it would be a solo band, but the music we started playing when we went out on the road sounded like how Giant Sand ever was. It developed from a chemistry that we have from the way we go about things.
The last record we did was recorded mostly in Denmark. It was recorded in-between touring and we were all failing asleep at various time of recording. Because we’re all fathers now, we never get enough sleep. When I heard the recordings later I thought there was a weird texture to the music. It’s not really amped up, but it’s not really sleepy. It’s something in-between being awake and that logic, and being asleep and the dream logic. I kind of enjoyed that. I don’t know if anyone can decipher that, but if you listened to the Blurry Blue Mountain album with this notion it will make sense. I like something that’s 7 ½ minutes long, but doesn’t sound more than three minutes. That demonstrates how time doesn’t exist when you’re in a dream state.
You’ve been doing this for roughly thirty tears, how do you still manage to find inspiration for your music?
I reckon it’s because of two things. The gambles we put in every night into the music. Of how we change things up and keep ourselves on our toes. It never gets complacent, it always keeps us compelled and wondering what’s going to happen next, or what we’re going to do within a song or how we’re doing it differently tonight. So there’s that improvisational aspect. That provides something; kind of enticement and longevity. The other thing is that we were fortunate enough to never get too popular to suffer any kind of backlash. I think maybe there’s a couple of ways to go about making music, I’ve remained independent and not reliant on anyone, so I can do what I want to do. But that has relatively marginal results, as far as popularity goes. Some people have too many others involved in order to provide that level of success. Then, when that success fades, those percentage people tend to back off. These acts tend to fail because they never learnt how to produce for themselves. Where do you feel most at home?
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Corba in Spain, and it felt more Tucson than Tucson. I like Brighton though, I’m looking forwards to coming soon, we’ve got friends that live there and you’ve got some great singers living there. You’ve got Emiliana Torrini and Sarah Basco. It’s always sweet to go and walk on that beach with those giant pebbles. Gelb’s dust-blown marriage of country, jazz, rock, blues and psychedelia blows into town on Thursday 19th May, for a one off show with Virginia-based country songstress Devon Sproule.
MAY 2011 THE GREAT ESCAPE
THE GREAT ESCAPE 12TH-14TH MAY This year’s Great Escape was shaping up to be one of the best yet but now, with newly confirmed acts still being announced, I’m pretty sure I’m safe in saying it will be the best ever. As those of you lucky enough last month to grab a copy of our magazine will know I gushed about what great bands and artists had already been confirmed – DJ Shadow, Warpaint, Josh T Pearson, Yuck, etc – but now I can add to that already pretty impressive line-up. Recently announced acts include The Wave Pictures, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Twin Shadow and Factory Floor whilst we also get the opportunity to see local heroes And So I Watch You From Afar play two shows in the space of the festival as well as the makers of one of my favourite records of last year – Okkervil River, who with the legendary Texan acid casualty and founder of the epic 13th Floor Elevators Roky Erickson produced the sublime True Love Cast Out All Evil. So, how are you going to cram all of that greatness into three days I hear you ask, well follow our guide and it couldn’t be easier!
The opening night for the public is Thursday and really it’s all about getting in to see DJ Shadow perform the spectacle that is Shadowsphere. He is on at 9.30 at the Dome… my advice get there as early as you can because you will not want to miss this. From here it’s a simple stroll down the road to the Corn Exchange for the uber-cool chill-wave of Twin Shadow at 10.30 in the Corn Exchange, whose debut effort last year Forget was one of my favourites. Simple, harmony-driven pop that suggests a greater depth to his music than a lot of his peers it really is a beautiful experience and to think that it will be followed, on the same stage, by the excellent Warpaint who I spoke about in last month’s preview. Well, that Thursday sorted and what a night it proves to be. Friday is a slightly more low-key affair but still offers up three great bands. The Wave Pictures to these ears are the quintessential English indie-pop band. Their sound is partly C-86 pop meets The Smiths but with fuzzier guitars. For those of you too young to remember C-86 and that is probably most of us as I can barely remember it myself was a mainly Scottish breed of indie-pop that was defined by its cutesy subject matter, girly or effeminate vocals and acoustic guitars – for a great

introduction see the legendary Vaselines who a lot of you missed the other month when they played the Coalition. The Wave Pictures play at Life from 9.45 or alternatively you could go see indie-rock newcomers Dinosaur Pile-Up who are a neo-grunge trio from Leeds who are a lot better than this write-up makes them sound. That is one of the problem of an event such as TGE occasionally two great bands have to play at the same time and it’s always hard to make a choice especially if you’ve never seen either before. Anyway, from here it’s over to the Pavilion Theatre to see the great Josh T Pearson who I raved about last month. He’s on at 10.45 and promises to be one of the highlights of the festival. Hopefully there will be lots of people wanting to go see The Friendly Fires so I can just walk up and get in to see Mr Pearson without too much hassle. Saturday, is another great day which starts early with local heroes And So I Watch You From Afar playing at the Prince Albert from 3 in the afternoon. We featured a big article on them last month and trust us they are simply great so get along and support the local scene in amongst all the other great music. From here, it seems obvious if the freakishly early summer continues to move down to the beach for some beer and food before moving along
to Concorde 2 for the amazing Okkervil River who are due on about 9.45, having blown me away with last year’s album, already have a new one in the can and ready for release in the shape of I Am Very Far due Monday 10th May. This show will hopefully showcase some of their older stuff as well as a lot of this new material and should be a real treat. Again though we have the problem of a band clash with Yuck playing on the pier at Horatio’s from 10.15. Oh what is a boy to do? I’m going to try my best to get to both but we will obviously have to wait and see… hopefully the gig on the pier will be running late! If you don’t fancy the mad run around don’t worry as after the might of Okkervil, bar a brief break for some euphoric dance nonsense in the shape of the imaginatively named D/R/U/G/S we have the also great Factory Floor who are another of that host of bands who formed with a deep rooted interest in all things 80s and postpunk but who prefer the darker nastier textures of the neo-industrial revolution of the time over the dance-party vibe of their peers. Anyway, it should be a great festival and don’t forget to pick up the magazine next month to see who I actually got to go and see and what I really thought!

MAY 2011 MARK EDE MONTHLY
MAYDAY!!! MAYDAY!!! May is, without doubt, the busiest month in Brighton music calendar. The Great Escape, The Festival, The Fringe and Meadowlands - significant events one and all - all have to cram into our already crowded schedule. May is certainly busy for ‘er indoors too; Gigs supporting Candi Staton (listen and learn Florence!), a guest slot with the Grits, ‘home town’ gigs Devon and Brighton (??!!) a main stage appearance at Meadowlands, an appearance on Brighton’s very own Latest TV, media promo and more all have to added to the workload. What with further festival appearances and a UK tour in the offing, the little pixies in Harmanator Towers are currently working overtime. The irony is that the more ‘little victories’ you get as an independent artist, the more things need to be done. More things to organise, more work to process, more things to finance and more problems in general to overcome. No wonder so many Brighton ‘artists’ never make a record or ever play a gig...I think they got it sussed!
THE JOOK HOUSE WORTHING IN ROCK VENUE SHOCKER! The ‘Jook House’ a new venue opened in Worthing by local blues legend ‘Desperate Bob’ at the Grand Victoria Hotel. With a firm focus of blues, soul and roots acts, respected ‘old school’ artists like Connie Lush, Albert Lee, and Chris Farlow are on the schedule, alongside visiting US bluesmen. We wish them well in prising people away from Saturday night reality shows, not least because Worthing could do with a successful music venue, to augment the alleged 850(!?) venues in Brighton capable of housing live music!.
BRIGHTON INSTITUTIONS —AND I DON’T MEAN OUR MANY REHAB CENTRES No, I’m talking about Paddle Round the Pier Festival, 2nd and 3rd July, a free event on Hove Lawns which includes a more than decent music line up (not that you’d know it from their website) put together by my friend Jen Collins who may or may not be talking to me at the moment for one good reason or another. Another institution is Brighton Live, running again this year from 12th to 15th October. I organised it last year so clearly they’ve got a very hard act to follow (oi oi!) but I’m sure it will all be alright on the night(s).
A MANAGERS LOT Obviously, as an out and out music business town, I tend to bump into a lot of other ‘Mr’ (and ‘Mrs’) 20 percenters - i.e. artist managers - around Brighton. We generally console ourselves with tales of woe about so called ‘revenue streams’ (a misnomer if ever there was one) whilst amusing ourselves with our latest mishaps which, this month, at least, seem to have a recurring theme of trying to get artists out of prison! As one fellow manager put it - ‘this is an impossible job, being done in impossible circumstances....which is exactly why I’m doing it’.

MAY 2011 FRINGE FESTIVAL
BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL It seems like the Brighton Fringe manages to take over every space in town that you can fit in an audience. This mammoth boundary pushing diary of events is unleashed on the town 7th – 30th May. There are too many varied and wonderful shows to list them all, but we’ll try and give you a tiny glimpse into some of the ones we like the look of. www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk
THE DREAM ENGINE HELIOSPHERE You should certainly fly down to Jubilee Square at 1pm for the Dream Engine Heliosphere on the 7th, an astonishing show, all suspended beneath a helium balloon. You might have seen their beautiful act at a recent FA Cup Final, now they present their aerial aerobatics to celebrate the opening day of the festival. PINK SINATRA Award-winning singer Scott Free invites you to sample the swinging tunes & wonderful melodies of some of the most beautiful songs ever written, in the cosy surroundings of the New Steine Hotel. Pink Sinatra runs from 8th to 22nd and is set to bring a touch of pure sophistication to the festival.

MR.B THE GENTLEMAN RHYMER A Chap-Hop superstar, combining pounding hip-hop beats with a lyrical awareness that’s straight from the pages of a PG Wodehouse novel. Hear his observations on living on the frontline in little England at the Komedia Studio on the 8th and 27th. UPSTAIRS AT THE THREE AND TEN has been a staple venue for festival events for a while now, so it’s no surprise that they are playing an active part in years proceedings. One of their standout acts is Juice 107.2 ’s Guy Lloyd who is promising the 7th Funniest Show in the Fringe. We know he’s easily capable of better than that. We also know that he’s unlikely to be capable of getting Lionel Richie to turn up… like he’s promised. See for yourself on the 15th and 18th. Also at Upstairs At The Three and Ten Late Night Gimp Fight return for more frenetically paced sketch show mayhem on 7th and 8th. These guys were our favourite act from last year, and not just for the amusement namedropping hem provided.

BELLYLICIOUS Sample a little bit of eastern promise on the 10th at The Brunswick, as Belly Dancer and comedienne Galit Mersand pushes the boundaries further with belly-dance, song and hilarious observations on the world.
THE CARNIVAL OF THE BIZARRE is occupying the Sabai Pavilion between the 10th and the 22nd. Led by undead Ringmaster, Doktor Haze, this show promises demon dwarfs, sword swallowing, a bevy of burlesque beauties and the return of the legendary Garry Stretch. The hotel is also the venue for EddYank Productions Presents Fanti Acrobats International for three weeks. This unique show from Ghana is a breathtaking performance not to be missed.
LIL’ RED RIDIN’ HOODIE Circus troupe Pyratrix is doing it for the kids as they present: Lil’ Red Ridin’ Hoodie on the 13th at The Level. MAY 2011 SAILOR JERRY
Two of his protégés, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, have kept his legacy alive with books, art exhibitions, a series of band showcases and the infamous (and delicious) spiced rum. This legend was explored further with an award-winning documentary released three years ago: Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life of Norman K. Collins. Now this moving and beautiful journey through Sailor Jerry’s life and art is being shown again at various venues around the world. We tracked down the film’s, somewhat jetlagged, director, Erich Weiss, to find about the story behind this story. How did you get into filmmaking?
I didn’t go to school for it, but I spent a couple of years touring and filming with bands. I spent three years shooting John Legends world tour. I’ve worked with a lot of different artists, mostly on the music side and filming for record companies. What inspired you to make a film about Norman Collins?
I’ve been getting tattoos since I was about 14. A lot of my friend I grew up with became tattoo artists, so I was aware of Sailor Jerry from an early start. I got the opportunity to interview Ed Hardy and Mike Malone. Then when I got that footage I realised it would make a compelling documentary, because it’s not just about Sailor Jerry, but about American tattooing in total. How would you explain the tattooing world’s fascination with Norman Collins to someone that had never heard his name?
He’s considered the godfather of American tattooing, and he symbolised the rough and tumble sailor mystique that goes along with the bold lie traditional Americana look. When
you think of sailors getting tattooed at a port of call, you think of Sailor Jerry. His life was like a storybook, not in the sense of happy endings, but it had all the elements of adventure, travel and modern day piracy. He travelled box-cars in the twenties and he got to Chicago, where he learnt tattooing form Cats Thomas. He then went to Great Lake Naval Academy and joined the Navy. He finished up in Hawaii in the late twenties and never left. Where did all the wonderful art shots in the film come from?
Most of the artwork came from Ed Hardy and Mike Malone’s private collections. Some came from US military archives. The University of Hawaii at Manoa had a really nice archive department that is filled with images from that time period. I thought it would take two months, but it took two and a half years. That wasn’t really good for budgeting. I slept on my buddies couch for a while whilst I was making the film. Why is the film being toured again?
The film is being released on DVD in Europe and Australia. Also its 100 years since Sailor Jerry’s birth this year, so all this activity is being tied in with that. Have you got any ideas for another film?
I’m working on a documentary with some house-industry guys about fontography and design. It’s a little chin-scratchy but it will be fun. Hori Smoku - Sailor Jerry: The Life of Norman K. Collins will be released in the UK on DVD later this year. If you can’t wait till then to get into the Sailor Jerry lifestyle, then Sailor Jerry Caribbean Spiced Rum is available in any discerning off-licence. www.sailorjerry.com

MAY 2011 VEGAN FARE
VEGAN FARE RESTAURANT REVIEW Food For Friends has been a cornerstone for the Brighton Vegan and Vegetarian for 30 years. Starting life as a counter-style eatery, it converted to a restaurant some years ago and since has had a change of owner and several Head Chefs, all making their own changes – some good, some not so good. I hadn’t eaten there since Lisa took the reins in January and I was excited to see what she had done to stamp her mark on the menu. My friend and I started with the Cashew, Smoked Tofu, Pear & Grape salad and Tofu Pockets. The salad had a perfect combination of flavours: a piquant dressing matching the sweetness of the pear with the tofu anchoring the dish. The Tofu Pockets are a staple of the menu and even though not one of Lisa’s personal creations, (“I’d get lynched if I took them off!”) she re-interprets them with a lively selection of pickled vegetables and beautifully finished with straw mushrooms. The Wild mushroom pocket is my favourite with the sharp/sweet pickles offsetting the savoury depth. The main course consisted of the Mexican Rosti and Grilled Middle Eastern Aubergine Rolls. The rosti was cooked beautifully with the natural creaminess of the root vegetables shining through. The Pinto casserole was a thoughtful re-invention of refried beans and the tomato & roast chilli salsa tasted exactly like it should: fresh and natural. The aroma of smoked paprika wafting off the aubergine was delightfully intense: a wonderful introduction to the dish. The aubergines themselves were undercooked with too much bite but were delicately spiced against the most delicious chilli kale; the best I’ve ever eaten. With filling bellies, we shared a dessert. The Chocolate Truffle Torte with summer berry compote was a slice of heaven and the sweetness of the compote was the perfect counterpoint to this smooth torte with the coconut biscuit base making it complete. It’s great to see that FFF has found its culinary feet again and the food isn’t coming in second to the excellent waiting staff. I’m looking forward to seeing what Lisa has up her sleeve in the months to come but I do know one thing’s for sure -Tofu Pockets aren’t going anywhere. WAKEBOARDING AT HOVE LAGOON It was a slightly overcast and chilly day as we arrived for the opening of the Cable Wakeboarding 2.0 System down at the Hove Lagoon. Greeted with a glass of champagne and taste of Elle’s Belles barbeque sausages, it wasn’t long before we got to witness the professionals giving us a front row soaking. There were all sorts of jumps, mid air flips, rail slides and whirlybirds (a wakeboarding term... don’t ask) on show, performed by some of the very best local practitioners, including Lewis Crathern, the kite boarding extraordinaire. A speech from Harvey Dorkins, the Hove lagoon director,
explained that this event was only possible due to the ongoing support from the council, their main sponsors ION and the dedicated team of experts on hand to get you up and going in the water. Then it came to us, five completely nervous novices, stepping up to brave the challenge and give the wakeboarding a go. Among us was Andrea Fox, who somehow miraculously and superbly executed a very neat-looking 180 degree turn while in motion, which was on only her second attempt. We’re all confident that was exactly what she was trying to do in the first place and it was in no way a lucky accident!

MAY 2011 BRIGHTON MARATHON
JUST PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER... Brighton Marathon review with Harry Conrad On a sparkling morning of bright spring sunshine, British middle distance champion Steve Cram fired the starting gun for one of Brighton’s most spectacular new annual events. Now in its second year, the Brighton marathon was declared a success as over eight thousand people took part in running the 26.2 miles on a day of magnificent weather with hardly a breath of wind. A festival atmosphere pervaded the city’s streets as throngs of people came out to support the runners and bask in the first glimmers of summer, while music was piped out to spur runners on at various legs of the race. All manner of colourful fancy dress wearing competitors sweated their way to the finish line, including, a tiger, pink ladies, a surfeit of stubbly chaps in dresses, pirates and even one wit opting to compete dressed as stick of Brighton Rock. Organisers were applauded by competitors, who found the event well managed particularly with regard to the regular hydration points, which in such warm weather conditions were crucial. Children were also encouraged to take part in the fun, with the ‘mini-mile’, which saw over a thousand children run the final mile of the course to cross the finish line on Madeira Drive.

RUN LIKE A HERO Anyone up for donning fancy dress, getting active and being a bona fide hero by raising money for kids in Africa? Brighton’s quirkiest sporting highlight is approaching faster than Superman’s descent from Krypton, and YOU can get involved. The Heroes Run was set up by local lads Matt Lambert and James Macdonald after they ran the Dublin Marathon dressed as Batman and Robin. They raised money for the Tenderfoot School in Nairobi to buy all the children shoes and decided to set up a charity to help expand the school. The Heroes Run is the flagship event of their charity Passing It On. In their first year, 241 superhero runners pounded along Brighton seafront, and five years later, 2010 saw a whopping 1500 heroes cross the finish-line, raising thousands of pounds for Passing It On. This year’s event on 15th May is set to be the biggest and best yet with a 5km, 10km, a kids 500m dash and a brand new youth race which is free to all Brighton and Hove Council School pupils within participating schools. As usual, lots of pre-event entertainment will be taking place on Hove Lawns as well as a launch party at The Fiddler’s Elbow on May 13th. Additionally, The Western Front will be hosting a wrap-party with drink discounts for all the heroes with a medal after the race. Do something heroic-come on! It’s time to limber up, find a superhero costume and log onto www.heroesrun.org.uk to get yourself a place. By Beki Turner PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID SMITH

MAY 2011 THE MEDIA BIZ
THE MEDIA BIZ —WITH JOSH LITTLE
PITCHING TV IDEAS
So, you have a great idea for a television show and want to take it to a production company, in the hope that they will love it as much as you do and turn it into a prime time smash hit. But what happens if, having ‘shown your cards’, you get rejected only to discover 6 months down the line that a programme that is extremely similar is appearing on television?
Copyright The starting point in this scenario is to understand that there is no copyright in an idea. If I have a general idea or concept for a television programme, but no script or finer details, then the law of copyright does not prevent somebody else from trying to make a commercial success of it. The law protects the expression of ideas, so as soon as you express your idea in permanent form (i.e. write it down in script form) you are protected, but not before. This is not an ideal situation when pitching.
Non Disclosure Agreements One option is to try and get the production company to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This is a contract whereby the person
receiving the information (production company) promises to keep it confidential and not to exploit the idea without obtaining the authorisation of the filmmaker. In theory, this is a nice solution to the problem and offers a good level of protection to the filmmaker. Unfortunately, the reality is that power rests with the production company and they will often refuse to sign such an agreement. By doing so, they would be blindly agreeing that the idea belongs to the filmmaker and if another filmmaker were to approach the company with a similar idea, they would be prevented from pursuing it.
Confidentiality Another option is to do without an NDA and rely on an implied duty of confidentiality. If the
information being shared has some commercial value and is communicated in confidential circumstances, then if the person receiving the information subsequently makes unauthorised use of that information to the detriment of the filmmaker, the filmmaker would have a claim.
Submission release In reality, the production company may actually want the filmmaker to sign a submission release before agreeing to a meeting. What this means is that the filmmaker is effectively saying, “I have no proprietary rights in anything that I am about to tell you and if you choose to use it without me, then I will not have any claim against you”.
Options Ultimately there is a decision to be made by the filmmaker. How much do they want to work with the production company in question? If the answer is a lot then they may have to accept that control of their idea may be lost as soon as they open their mouth. Remember that there are a number of production companies in the world and they don’t all behave the same. Shop around and if at all possible, ask people to sign an NDA before disclosing valuable ideas. Just try not be too formal and uptight or you may find a lot of doors get shut in your face.
