MAY 2013

It’s got to be warm enough to go outside now. Just in time for the Great Escape, Fringe and Brighton Festivals too! Well done to all of you that ran the Brighton Marathon the other month, we were due to run, but got our dates mixed up and ran into some dodgy march the following Sunday. Surprisingly we were the only people in Lycra and hair that cost over a fiver. You have to question the logic of holding such a march in a city populated predominantly by middle-class hippies. Let’s keep Brighton rainbow coloured… Have a great May, you deserve it!

NOFIT STATE CIRCUS

Jubilee Square 24 May - 2nd June

88 London Road Opens on 9th May

Hove Lawns 14th May - 2 June

Fringe 2013 will see every conceivable space in the city utilised as a performance space, but new for this year is the arrival of Soul Dome in Jubilee Square. A Pop-Up venue housing a 360’ immersive cinema, it’ll host local talent, showcase art and performance within its unique and exquisitely inspiring inflatable 7m Dome from 24 May – 2 June, including a Café, Bar and Ice Cream Parlour. Events range from kids shows, live performance, workshops (yoga, dancing and singing) and short films.

Just in time for the festivals, a new theatre venue is set to wow Brighton. Emporium is a professional theatre complex housed in a rejuvenated church on the city’s lively London Road. Its aim is to provide a venue, hub and resource centre for anyone interested in theatre and film. Their inaugural season promises some of the best one-person performances you’ll find anywhere, including the acclaimed Box Clever theatre company and a specially written show from the delightful Fake Bush. Visit www.emporiumbrighton. com for show and ticket information.

After several hugely successful appearances at Fringe, NoFit State Circus returns to Brighton with a brand new world class production – Bianco. Returning to their roots, with their elegant and subversive brand of circus, and iconic immersive, promenade work, NoFit State create a unique all-consuming theatrical experience that combines intoxicating live music, gravity defying circus and stunning costume design, all in a constantly evolving environment. SHOOSHH/HONEY CLUB

CLUB BERLIN

ETHICAL SUPERMARKET

Brighton Seafront

Green Door Store 9th May

York Place London Road

Back after a change of ownership and a lush million quid refit, Honey Club becomes Shooshh, Brighton’s first VIP superclub with Honey Club taking residency next door giving a more intimate feel. Thurs nights are offering Do You Really Like It? A fresh night of top DJ’s spinning quality UKG and Old Skool, which looks set dominate the midweek club calendar. Expect top tunes, pretty people and some bad hangovers! Practice your swagger.

Brighton Fringe prompts the re-launch of Club Berlin down at The Green Door Store, that funky little place under the railway station. This popular art/club night offers you the chance to listen and dance to live electronic-influenced music and check out amazing artworks from some of Brighton’s most inspiring artists. Hosted by Das Fenster’s Eva Katharina, Elastica’s Justin Welch and Mew, the first show on Thu 9 May sees live music from AKDK, Das Fenster, La Momo and DJ’s Fujiya & Miyagi, with art by Eva V and Mew.

After months of negotiations, Brighton’s first ethical supermarket is a step closer to opening. The new store on York Place will sell locally-sourced seasonal and organic foodstuffs at prices that suit all budgets. By prioritising social aims ahead of profits, they hope to create a real alternative to the major supermarkets. This social venture promises to be ‘honest’ about food, investing profits into future projects and training through Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, and could create up to ten jobs, as well as playing a major role in promoting local food producers and suppliers. Work on the premises will begin soon, meaning the store could potentially open in July. www.hisbe.co.uk

MUSIC PREVIEWS BY BRAD MIDDLETON

With The Great Escape in town this month there is a lot to offer but if you can’t afford tickets for that then how about getting along to these great shows which offer to hopefully bring with it some summer fun. At least please let it have finally stopped snowing!

SUPREME DICKS + I’M BEING GOOD 6th May // Green Door Store

Excellently named weirdness from the wonderful Amherst, Massachusetts combo who are also signed to Jagjaguwar. Having had a compilation album, Breathing and Not Breathing, put out in 2011 the band reformed and have been touring it ever since. Originally they formed all the way back in 1984 and produced songs that combined dissonant lo-fi noise, avant-garde, and psychedelia sounds to an interesting effect but failed to make any impact on the mainstream before they split in 1996. What really makes this show is former label mates I’m Being Good agreeing to be the main support act. The two once shared a home at Infinite Chug and this should be a great reunion as well as a great night for righteously weird guitar music.

SUUNS 13th May // The Haunt

Suuns are not your usual ‘rock’ band and that is something your correspondent has always loved, bands that are great but defy easy classification. Signed to the great Secretly Canadian label this fourpiece band who hail from Montreal have just entered a vital point in their development. With their third album, Images Du Futur, already garnering critical acclaim in a lot of important circles they may well live up to the hype implied in the title of their new work. Whatever happens tonight should be a real interesting show and who knows in years to come you may be one of the lucky few who can say you saw them before they were huge. Let’s hope so as music needs more bands like this. HAPPY MONDAYS

SUUNS

SHUGGIE OTIS 10th May // Concorde2

WOLF PEOPLE 10th May // Blind Tiger

Shuggie Otis is a legend to a select few people. He has played with all manner of musical visionaries and began playing at the age of only two, over fifty years ago now! Since then he has been a mover and shaker in the late 60’s and throughout the 70’s before moving in to a more private existence which reached its peak in the early 00’s when he moved back to Southern California. However that all ended in 2012 when he launched a new band and the rather scary sounding ‘Never Ending World Wide Tour’ in November last year. This should have given the new band enough time to really get to know their enigmatic leader and to have perfected the set which should make it a great night.

A British band who sound like they could be from the deserts of Nevada and are amongst the great roster at Jagjaguwar who have a couple of their major acts in town this month. This group deliver groove-heavy psychrock monoliths that recall Led Zeppelin/ Black Sabbath/ Pentagle but with a modern crunch. Their sound is new and original however mixing different periods of musical influence in to the mix besides the usual late 60’s, early 70’s hippy rock. They represent one of the most exciting bands in the ensuing battle to define the sound for the twenty-first century.

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN 30th May // The Haunt

One of the most interesting bands of their time (1983-90), Camper have been back together now for nearly fifteen years and have continued to dig the unfamiliar and experiment with interesting ideas; what other band could do a country-influenced version of Black Flag’s seminal rant Wasted and actually pull it off? Very few that’s how many. They mixed in ska, indie-pop, eastern folk, punk and a whole cavalcade of weirdness to create something that was truly unique. They haven’t just sat back either on the laurel’s of their back catalogue since reforming and January marked the release of their third new studio album since then, the tantalising La Costa Perdida, which comes over all Northern California with hints of later Beach Boys in between all the chaos and confusion that usually reigns; a sign that things are just as buoyant now as they were all those years ago when they formed.

HAPPY MONDAYS 26th may // Brighton Centre

Back to Brighton again for another bank holiday weekend rave up the Mancunian legends are this time armed with a new album, the first with the original line-up since the halcyon days of the early 90’s. They got back together, for the fourth time, in January 2012 and after a brief rehearsal schedule hit the road again in May 2012. Apparently they have calmed down over the years but the demand for tickets was still huge and they played a series of sellout shows across the UK. This all coincided with a new best of album, Double Double Good in July 2012 before they set for all manner of exotic destinations including Chile, Argentina, the more usual Ibiza and Majorca and the festival circuit of the UK. This all culminated in them deciding to return to the studio in September where they recorded the album you should expect to hear some of at tonight’s show. And just for all you Manc heads out there who remember the late 80’s and early 90’s threw a daze of narcotic misbehaviour the support comes from the 808 State Soundsytem.

E H T R O F E TIM G N I K O O L D O O G BOY Time For The Good Looking Boy is the third play in Box Clever’s Urban Mischief series. Using a minimal set and a powerful performance, it examines one audacious young lad and the darkness that lurks below the surface of his life. Now this hugely successful production is coming to Brighton’s newest theatre, Emporium, so we caught up with Craig from Box Clever to find out more.

How would you describe Time for the Good Looking Boy to someone with an unremarkable background? Time for the Good Looking Boy is a brilliantly written and cleverly delivered performance. The story resonates with everyone, whether they are experienced in attending live performances or completely new to theatre. It is a story that everyone can easily follow and enjoy. How much of the play draws from personal experiences? Is there anything in the piece that actually happened? The starting point of the play was the unexpected death of an 18-year-old known to the Artistic Director indirectly through a school in which he was working at the time. The death of this student made Michael think more about the emotions that follow the sudden absence of a person. He started to consider all the things that this young person may have done, what he left unsaid, and the emptiness and emotions felt by the friends and family left behind. What can you tell us about the Urban Mischief series? Urban Mischief is a series of contemporary plays about young people. They consider adolescence – that hinterland between childhood and adulthood. The series of performances are set in an urban landscape and focus on how young people deal with growing up and the chal-

lenges they face. They are not stories about gangs and drugs; they are commentaries on the difficult issues faced by young people in modern society. Time for the Good Looking Boy is the third in a series of three new stories written by Michael with the first two - Dirty Kissing and Sixteen Up - touring to venues in 2008 and 2009. How important is the score in Time for the Good Looking Boy? Did the process, with the composer Jon Nicholls, turn out as you’d thought it would? The musical score developed by Jon Nicholls is at the heart of the narrative. It tells as much about what is happening in the performance as the words and acting. The score was developed in the rehearsals with director Iqbal Khan, placing it in the centre of the development of this performance, and continues throughout the full 60-minute play. Is it more difficult to write a compelling piece with a single performer than a choreographed ensemble production? The single performer tells the story, but takes on a dozen different characters throughout the piece, giving lots of different story lines to follow. This style of story telling is what Box Clever does best - using a small number of

performers who take on the characteristics of a number of people involved to deliver a moving performance. Do you think there’s enough non-patronising theatre for young people? Young adults are very quick to notice when they’re been spoken down to… Time for the Good Looking Boy is as equally relevant to young people as it is to older audiences; the story resonates across ages. Our marketing never says that the show is just for a certain age group, however it is a young character who tells his story so young people may particularly relate to the words and the performance. Any piece of theatre can be patronising for any age group: careful writing, directing and acting ensure that this play does not have negative effects on the audience. One of the play’s strengths is not in what it says, but what it suggests is impending. How do you even begin to convey subconscious messages to a theatre audience? There are clues that something is not quite as it seems throughout the performance. A combination of clever writing, directing and the use of the soundscape and lighting help unravel that hidden story.

What would you say to anyone fearful of young people and the occasionally alien culture they belong to? If you believe the press, Britain is under siege from hordes of feral, lawless, hooded types. In this play they meet a character who appears aggressive to begin with and takes on some of the stereotypes associated with young people. By the end of the play they see a young boy who is trying to make up for the things he has done. The costumes and masks fall away and you get to see what is underneath that clothing. How important is theatre, especially for young people, in austerity-hit Britain? We believe it is the right of every young person in this country to have cultural experiences and, more importantly, to see live performances. There is not enough in the reach of young people, whether it is music, dance or theatre. It is not the same as film and video; there is a vital personal exchange in a live performance and that is what we aim to deliver.

Time For The Good Looking Boy hits Emporium on Monday 13 – Wednesday 15 May. Book your tickets at www.emporiumbrighton.com

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 4 - 26 MAY England’s most prestigious arts festival is back to delight us with the best of Music, Theatre, Dance, Film, Literature and Debate. Former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen is fulfilling Guest Director duties this year, so let’s have a look at the best treats he and the team have for us in 2013. The Corn Exchange hosts the UK premiere of My Life After, on Fri 24 – Sun 26 May. A touching examination of life under military rule in Argentina, six actors use photos, letters, tapes, clothes, stories and memories to explore how their parents coped with living through some of the South American republic’s most turbulent times, revealing complex and dark secrets alongside the joy and humour of lives recovered. Beloved Brighton-based beatboxer Beardyman spits out - One Album Per Hour on Sat 4 at the Corn Exchange, which sees the multi-award- winning musician transcend mere mimicry, using only audience suggestions, electronic trickery and his voice, he’ll create a whole new album in an hour. You’ve heard of a one-man band? This guy’s a oneman symphony orchestra. Award-winning playwright Young Jean Lee, and her band Future Wife, reflect on coming to terms with mortality in the UK Premiere of We’re Gonna Die on Tue 7 – Thu 9 at Brighton Dome’s Studio Theatre. Confronting the inevitable through her experiences of isolation and loneliness, Lee shares the comfort she found in all the simple and unexpected things. There’s some terrific Circus on offer again this year. On Mon 6 - Tue 7 May at the Dome Concert Hall, Cirque Éloize present the UK Premiere of Cirkopolis, a vibrant, humorous and imaginary show that pushes the boundaries of visual and audio innovation, all inspired by the rich visual legacy of the classic films Metropolis and Brazil. Hove’s All Saints Church plays host to Circa’s How Like An Angel on Tue 7 – Fri 10 May. Combining intensely beautiful music (including Thomas Tallis’ Gaude gloriosa, Hildegard of Bingen’s O Viridissima Virgo and Missa L’homme arme by

Josquin des Prez) and feats of astonishing acrobatics, this promenade show draws you deep into a world of physical daring and soaring sound, against a backdrop of stunning architecture. There’s deadly challenge on offer at Spiegeltent at Thu 16 – Sun 19, with Rob Drummond’s Bullet Catch. A show, full of storytelling, mind-reading, levitation, games of chance and the titular final stunt, this was a huge success at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This unique fusion of magic and theatre plays with our perceptions of truth and illusion to create a powerful dramatic experience. Zero is a world where nothing is certain. A turbulent mix of dance, music and visual theatre, Zero’s world premiere, on Tue 21 - Wed 22 at the Corn Exchange, charts sibling rivalries, frustrated desires and murderous ambitions. Clod Ensemble, led by choreographer/director Suzy Willson and composer Paul Clark, make performance work that pushes the boundaries between art forms, making this essential festival fare for any Dance enthusiast. The Brighton Dome is a versatile venue, but it’s never been transformed into a fully-fledged cabaret space before. In a festival exclusive on Sat 25 Musik Kabarett does exactly this, so they can whisk us away to a world of counter- culture creativity and genre-defining performance styles. In this tribute to Berlin‘s 1920/30’s club and cabaret scene and it’s lasting influence on the music of today, Nina Hagen’s trademark idiosyncratic style, together with the incredible vocal talents of the divine David McAlmont join forces with Jamie McDermott and his band The Irrepressibles, to create an incredible evening of glamour and decadence in Brighton’s iconic concert hall.

THE TIGER LILLIES THE TIGER LILLIES SEEM TO BE A PERFECT FIT FOR BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2013. URBANE, IMAGINATIVE AND PLAINTIVE, THEY BLUR THE DIVISION BETWEEN PERFORMANCE, ART AND MUSIC, MEANING IT’S UNLIKELY YOU’LL HAVE SEEN A BAND TELLING STORIES WITH SIMILAR AMBITION AND FERVOUR.

Tenderly charting the sordid depths that the human experience can touch, the three-piece’s unorthodox mix of Gypsy Music and Brechtian Cabaret has earned them an enormous ‘cult’ following. Accompanied by Adrian Stout and Mike Pickering, Jacques’ lyrics revel in examining in minute detail - to the point of celebration, the sleazy, desperate melodrama of society’s darker side, all topped off with an evocative, other-worldly falsetto. Brighton’s had a long association with the gaudy, desperate and plain odd sides of life, so it’s fitting that The Tiger Lillies will present the UK premiere of their theatrical version of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner for its Festival, on Thu 23 May, at the Dome Concert Hall. Their performance of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic opiate-infused vision sees the band enveloped onstage by specially designed graphics, from acclaimed artist and photographer Mark Holthusen, that bring the strange

imagery of the poem to life. Breath-taking stagecraft, compelling source material and The Tiger Lillies knack for creating awe-inspiring songs full of hope, anguish, desire and wrath, all come together to create a beautiful immersive experience Since their formation in 1989 the band’s uncompromising music-hall style examination of the primeval and shocking has seen them tagged ‘DarkCabaret’, but what the Tiger Lillies do defies definition so simple. “When it started we set out to make music that didn’t fit into any kind of genre. But eventually we became a genre on our own,” the bands singer-songwriter, Martyn Jacques, tells us. “We’ve worked with various record companies, but they never know how to view us. Often we got described as Classical. But we never go down well with that audience,”

23 MAY

Early days for the band saw their musical narratives judged too vaudevillian for the normal rock circuit. Unable to play traditional venues The Tiger Lillies instead opted to perform their achingly beautiful tales of whores, drug addicts and criminals into small pubs and theatres, doubtlessly giving rise to the view of them as a Cabaret act. “When I used to play I’d have my eyes shut, just pretending that we were in Wembley Stadium. But with our stage show now, you can’t see the audience at all. So when the lights go up you realise there’s a hall full of people.” Taking influence from a dark and poetic pre-war Berlin Schoneberg, The Tiger Lillies fuse this with punk sensibilities and lyrics that expose small hidden slices of real life. “Our influences are things like Wiene, or Brecht and Weil and their Threepenny Opera. But no one ever calls them Cabaret. I think we’re a lot closer to Theatre than anything else.”

In their time they’ve arranged special performances of Hamlet, won an Olivier Award with their macabre adaptation of the children’s book Shockheaded Peter and even put their own dark dramatic twist on Claudio Monteverdi’s Madrigals of Love and War. “We did one show in Edinburgh, to a classical crowd, and they started walking out en masse. One guy even started heckling us… Which is strange, because you expect that crowd to be more reserved.” Clearly there’s one thing this band excel at, it’s evoking a reaction. For a knowing few, The Tiger Lillies appearance at Brighton Festival will simply confirm their status as inventive and dynamic artists, for the rest of us it’ll be a revelation that a band wants to be more than… well, just a band. www.brightonfestival.org / www.tigerlillies.com

Mirroring the runaway success of the Paralympic Games last year, there’s a big focus on disability arts events this Fringe. Nicholas McCarthy, who played at the games’ closing ceremony, comes to town, providing part of MOOT’s incredible programme of events and performances designed to promote music as an inclusive, and enormously beneficial, art for people from any background. The centre of Brighton will be bursting with colour and noise every Sat, from 4 May to 1 June, with Fringe City’s showcasing the best in street performers. Comedy to cabaret and puppetry to poetry will be drawing the crowds to New Road for this muchloved Fringe staple. Expect the unexpected. How about going to a recycling plant for Doing What It Says On The Tin, a tragi-comedy about the building trade, or Camus’ The Outsider on the seafront? Every flat green space in the city sees pop-up venues, from gin-pal-

aces to solar-powered theatres, springing up. The Spiegel Tent returns, with a range of shows and a pop-up restaurant run by Sam's of Brighton, plus a visit from La Clique. There’s plenty more circus on offer too, as NoFit State return to rule Hove Lawns for a month. Using every conceivable space and displaying nearly every conceivable art-form, Fringe has Brighton bursting with imagination-firing fun this month. Just remember to lock your house when you leave it, or you may find a mime workshop moving in. www.brightonfringe.org

BN1 CHATS WITH...

ANDIE AIRFIX In a time before downloads, when album artwork was more than a dull 400x400 photo with type attached, a band would define its image through 12 inch squares of cardboard wrapped around their vinyl offerings. The Eighties saw a golden age of this art form, which encouraged a new wave of graphic designers like Andie Airfix to push the boundaries of what could be done with a modest, but highly visable, space. Over three decades, bands like Metallica, Def Leppard, Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin have all turned to Mr Airfix and his intricate evolutionary approach to design. “It’s not what you know, its finding people that know more,” He tells us over breakfast in the North Laine. “I learned not by studying, but by going to a printer.” Although attention to detail, imagination and sheer hard work are mostly to blame for his success, he freely admits that chance runs heavily through his life. “I came back from painting in the Himalayas for two years… I was walking down the street and saw a place which had a sign saying Nightclub and Gallery. It was called Country Cousins and was run by Chris Hunter who said: ‘We’re opening on Tuesday, so I’ll help you frame your pictures and we’ll get them on the wall.’” The show was a success, and he was subsequently asked to provide graphics for the club. But it was hanging out at legendary New Romantic haunt The Blitz that provided encounters with various music industry types, including The Thompson Twins, who were so impressed with Andie they invited him to do the cover of their platinum selling

Quick Step and Side Kick album. “Whatever it allows me to get on with people works. I really don’t treat these rock stars like anyone else. In many ways it’s refreshing for them, because they’re used to being pandered to. The fortunate thing is when I met those people there was something on the table we were both excited about, so by talking about work you end up chatting.” He’s a little wary of computer graphics, claiming they remove many random elements from a design. “You can’t hang a computer up and let the paint drip down it.” He also points out the enormous variance between colour values on different computers, insisting that the only way to get a design right is to proof it yourself at the printers. But, despite this gentle disdain, his ground-breaking cover for Def Leppard’s monster hit album Hysteria (which sold over 26 million copies and provided seven hit singles!) saw him becoming an early adopter of CGI for the design. “I went to what I thought would be a state of the art facility to meet this guy, who turned up pissed, with a picture of a circuit. He took a photo of it and we coloured it in… sort of. He then took a picture of the screen. It was very early days.” The emergence, and subsequent dominance, of the CD format saw the size of album art slashed, but there are other products a big rock act needs artwork for. “I got over it. In the meantime I did a lot of tours. Now you’ve got t-shirts and programmes, so you’ve got a lot of material to do some serious graphics on. We were stretching

the limits… We were doing all kind kinds of really cool things.” Now he’s returned to his roots for an event at Brighton Fringe, The Airfix Lounge, which sees presenting a 3-week exhibition of his most treasured and iconic work, all punctuated with a series of talks that’ll reveal even more background to his work. “The exhibition is going to very random, I just keep finding stuff. Rather than having an exhibition that’s static, I want something that’s in progress. I can include faxes, notes and other things that contributed to the process. People have said to me I must tell my stories. But what I discovered was that people are more interested how the images came about… what happened to get to the final product?” The talks are set to cover a wide range of subjects, all drawing on his wealth of experience, including how to deal with clients. ”You don’t talk to Paul McCartney’s manager, “he laughs. “Because he won’t know what he really wants.” Other talks include analysis of the detailed creative process that spawned his most famous works with Def Leppard and Metallica, what a good client expects and how to get the best out of a job, all peppered with extraordinary stories of the colourful people that have filled his life. (Many of which we were far too scared to print…) Airfix Lounge (Graphic Design As An Extreme Sport) runs Mon 6 – Sat 25 May, with Andie giving talks on 11 evenings throughout the show. andieairfix.com

How do you perform Shakespeare in a brand new way? Shall we discuss it over a beer? The Tax Deductible Theatre Company brings us a new concept: Shitfaced Shakespeare, inebriated and undignified performances of the bard’s greatest works, where one actor in the company is absolutely battered. It doesn’t get more spontaneous and edgy than combining Theatre with drinking games. The guys behind this madness gave us the lowdown on what will undoubtedly be the hit of Brighton Fringe.

OK… why? Where did the inspiration for such an impertinent take on the work of England’s greatest playwright come from? We’re all professional actors who love Shakespeare and his stories dearly… we just think they’re even better when one of the cast is trolleyed. The show didn’t have an easy beginning though. We first had the idea in 2005 but after one somewhat illfated rehearsal decided it was waaay too dangerous. We rehearsed in the director’s house and the next morning all the light bulbs had been systematically smashed for reasons no-body can fully remember. In 2011 we decided to give it another go at a music festival (not known for their easily accessible light bulbs) and it worked perfectly. We’ve been on the road with it ever since but this will be its first ever Brighton run. Is there a rota in place to decide who performs inebriated each night, or is it just who gets there first? We normally draw the names out of a bucket, top hat or comically oversized codpiece but nobody performs drunk two nights in a row. That would just be unusually cruel.

You may also see some body parts you weren’t expecting too and probably hear some equally authentic Anglo-Saxon to boot. Are you going to cheat? There are a lot of silent characters in Shakespeare’s work. How dare you sir? We never cheat. Each night our drunken actor is encouraged to perform the entire play to the absolute best of their somewhat impaired abilities. It’s always a major character and they will have loads of lines and very few long boring monologues. There’s also likely to be sword fighting, dancing, acrobatics and grand displays of romance for our drunk to perform… which is always good for a laugh.

How drunk is drunk? Are we talking tipsy Xmas Nan, or heroically drunk levels here? That’s the brilliance of the entire show! We let the audience decide exactly how drunk our actors get. Before the play begins the compere shows the crowd all the empties which the performer has drunk and then hands out bells, gongs, whistles, air horns etc. to the audience. At any time during the play they can bang, whistle, blow or honk. As soon as they do we stop the show, bring on another drink and let the actor have at it before continuing. But to answer your question: no. We are not talking tipsy Xmas Nan. We do have to delineate a “vom-zone” at the front of the stage for good reason.

Do you worry you may anger people by not treating Shakespeare with the normal reverence? Reverence our withered bull’s-pizzle on a string! Shakespeare was the Holby City of his day. These plays were meant to be seen and enjoyed by utterly everyone in Elizabethan times. From the top to the bottom of society and all the noxious bits in between. We think he’d be gutted if he knew that his plays had become the preserve of uninterested GCSE students with an instruction manual to help them de-code what they’re seeing and the chattering classes who go along just to prove they support ‘the arts’! We return Shakespeare’s comedies to being fun, boisterous, interactive, understandable and raucous. We think Shakespeare would love seeing what we do and would probably even buy us a drink.

How do you think this take enhances the performance? In absolutely every way. We love us some Shakespeare but have you ever been to one of his ‘comedies’ and actually laughed? Properly, honestly laughed? We guarantee that you will come away with a smile on your face and probably see a Shakespeare play more authentically portrayed than you ever have before or will again.

How about audience participation, can they turn up drunk? What, and drink along with the show? What an utterly irresponsible, reckless, foolishly dangerous idea. Sounds great! What does your sponsor have to say about this? The Charlie Sheen Libation Provision Society would like to remind you to always enjoy Shakespeare responsibly… and to win. Always to win.

BN1 FRINGE COMEDY PICKS

GUILT & SHAME: ADDICTED TO EVERYTHING Upstairs at Three & Ten // 3 - 5 May

THE YELLOW SHOW The Burrow // Sundays through Fringe

Sex, drugs, partying, pornography, bestiality, Downton Abbey – we all have our addictions, but somehow Guilt & Shame have managed to get them all. Addicted to Everything sees Guilt & Shame invite us to Upstairs at Three & Ten, on Fri 3 – Sun 5 May, to share our darkest secrets in the safe space of group therapy. It’s a journey to redemption that will take them to heaven, then drag them straight back to hell again. And you’re going with them. This Brighton Fringe debut has a pumping soundtrack as erratic as any good addict’s heart rate, crazy dance numbers and inspirational rapping transvestites with lessons for us all, Addicted to Everything is one sketch show you won’t be able to quit.

In 2012 comic poet Rob Auton stood in an underground cave at the back of a pub in Edinburgh and performed a show about the colour yellow for an hour a day for a month. Word of the show quickly spread and before long Rob was expressing his yellow focussed thoughts to a packed house. Now this hour of brightness comes to Brighton Fringe on every Sun throughout Fringe (bar the 18th) at The Burrow. Upon arrival, the audience gets equipped with a pair of ‘Yelevision’ glasses so they can fully enjoy a show full of spoken word and miscellany about the colour of lemons, marigolds, rubber ducks, certain lights, butter, New York taxis, various cartoon characters, daffodils, some milkshakes and skips.

DOLLY MIXTURE Caroline of Brunswick // 24 - 25 May

LAUREL AND HARDY Brighton Media Centre // 13 - 19 May

Anna Morris’ comic creation, Georgina the Bride, hits Caroline Of Brunswick as part of her show, Dolly Mixture, on Sat 4, Fri 24 – Sat 25 May. Georgina is just one of 6 unique female characters in this 1 hour show, which fuses character comedy with memorable audience participation. Step on-board Britain’s lowest budget cruise ship with Janene, see if American lifestyle coach Dr Andrea Andrew can change your views on marriage…with a knife, and let Australian fashionista Taylor Tyler scrutinize your wardrobe. Get in there while you can, this girl, and her girls, will be huge.

The world’s favourite double act comes to Brighton Fringe this year! Sort of… Stan and Ollie return from the afterlife to scrutinize their lives and careers at The Brighton Media Centre Studio on Mon 13 - Sun 19 May, in Laurel and Hardy. Written by Tom McGrath in 1976, this touching play not only reveals elements of their private lives and close friendship, but also includes many loving nods towards their rich canon of film work, including recreations of some of their best loved gags (not forgetting their famous dance from ‘Way Out West’) and plenty of slapstick comedy.

THE HA PPY MONDAYS Erupting from a Manchester music scene that would later become the epicentre for British youth culture, the Happy Mondays scored a string of hit singles and albums, whilst simultaneously outraging Middle England with a series of drug-fuelled tabloid-baiting antics. “We got the press we wanted to get. We played the game,” Shaun Ryder, the bands frontman tells us. “It was just a band. It’s the same as kids listening to the Rolling Stones or Frank Sinatra.” By irrelevantly blending Stax Soul with Acid House, these funked-up council estate lads showed a previously lacklustre generation of indie kids that it was OK to dig dance music. Now, twenty years since their dissolution, the original line-up is back, with a series of shows that takes them from Dubai to Japan, Australia and good old Brighton.

‘I think we’re booked up for

the next two years. It’s good though, when we split up we were just a bunch of boys, now we’re all in our fifties. It’s a lot more enjoyable than it was the first time around.’

The comeback sees the band renewed and celebratory of their achievements. But now that Ryder has kids of his own, are there any bands that around that can match the Monday’s notoriety? “I’m sure there are… I hear some of the stuff coming out of my lad’s room harping on about making dough and diamond encrusted Rolexes.” “Today… the way it is… it’s not just a music business, it’s an entertainment business. A lot of these kids have to play a game, otherwise they’ll get dropped.” Ryder’s also found the time to make a History Channel show about UFOs, a subject he’s had first-hand experience of, which sees him travelling the planet on an epic quest for the truth. In case the TV audiences haven’t had enough of him, there’s also an ITV film of his life about to enter production. “We’ve just done the deal and it’s going into production now. ITV are making my biography into a TV movie, which is better than going to the cinema. There’s hundreds of British movies that no-one sees, but get on ITV at the right time you’ll get millions of viewers.” The haphazard journey of this ‘Salford lad made good’ will make compulsive viewing, but what have all the ups and downs of his career taught Mr Ryder? “Not much... Keep your gob shut, maybe?”

The Happy Mondays play The Brighton Centre on Sun 26 May. www.happymondaysonline.com

CHEQUERS 45 PRESTON ST, BN1 2HP

As a Brightonian, Chequers on Preston Street is one of those places that I have frequented on more than one occasion. It’s a stone’s throw from what I think of the ‘good bit’ of the sea front which is near the West Pier and therefore away from what can be an annoyingly busy throng of people in the summer. There are also some great bars and pubs’ occupying its sloping pavement and Chequers is one of my favourites. Small enough to feel personal, and big enough not to feel cramped it embodies an eclectic mix of understated charm, kooky touches and a very warm and inviting atmosphere. Possibly one of the best things about Chequers, however, is the attitude of the staff. They are incredibly friendly, talkative and interesting- the sort of folks that would go out of their way to cheer you up if, let’s say hypothetically, you had dropped your brand new phone down the loo earlier that day. They are known for their live music, DJ, comedy and open mic nights, and are really starting to make a name for themselves foodwise too. Many a trusted friend has abused my ears with tales of their wondrous roasts, which I was surprised to see are only £8.50, with them doing a deal whereby you can get two for £15great value by any standards. Ali, the joint-manager, was telling me about a couple of things they are doing from May, one of which is a hearty meal for £4.95 on Tuesday nights (open mic night) for anyone carrying a student card. They are also going to be offering a sandwich delivery service to local offices, and Takeaway Beach Baskets, which for a small deposit and £20 will give you a couple of sarnies, some crisps and either a bottle of wine or some beers. Their menu focuses on crowd-pleasing munch, so I decided to first go for Egg’s Florentine for a fiver from their well chosen

BY LUCY HALLETT

breakfast menu. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection, and the sauce benefitted from the unique inclusion of wholegrain mustard. I then went for one of their pizzas, with a base recipe so authentically Italian that it had to be translated before it could be used! The Meat Lover for £8.50, which had an abundance of gammon, ground beef, chorizo and pepperoni, was superb. My dining partner said the last time they had pizza as good they were in Rome. I finished my food-dabbling with the somewhat legendary Pulled Pork sandwich; meat so carefully prepared by Mike (the chef) that he is sometimes checking on it at 3am because he wants it to be perfect. Unsurprisingly it was gorgeously rich and tender and very well-priced at £6.50. I am always impressed by the friendly atmosphere at Chequers, and now I can say with certainty that the food brings a smile to my face just as quickly.

NEIGHBOURHOOD 101 ST. JAMES STREET BY LUCY HALLETT

There are a few streets in and around Brighton that I’m always pleased to have a reason to visit, St James’ street being one of them. One of my favourite things about it is the way that it doesn’t seem to conform to any single particular style yet conveys an innate kookiness. This ethos is one that seems to permeate the trashy, funky but never conformist walls of Neighbourhood, a Brooklyn- Dive style bar nestled half way up the street. It is difficult to describe the general feel without throwing in words like ‘anti-establishment’, ‘cool’ and ‘hip’, but somehow this makes it sound like Neighbourhood is trying too hard, which it isn’t. Sitting at the chunky, comfy wooden tables a Roy Lichtenstein-style piece of art seems at home next to some garish religious iconography and a wall of graffiti. I was distracted by looking outside at a great summer-style area where the cast iron chairs are painted in neon colours, and complemented by beautiful and bright vintage style cushions. Kitsch and outlandish, the star attraction is a white cabana at the bottom that can be hired out for parties, and oozes the sort of cool you would associate with a beach in a trendy part of Ibiza. Feeling greedy, my dining partner and I ordered a little bit of everything, and washed it all down with a very impressive Malbec. The owner Ben, prides himself of their use of an independent wine supplier, and hand-picks a selection of beer and wine, but keeps the price-point affordable. We started with a meat sharing platter, which was very reasonable at £11 for two. The ingredients were excellent quality, and would impress even the most seasoned diner. We then moved onto some sensational chicken wings flanked by two large pots of sauce- we opted for Buffalo and Roquefort Blue Cheese, £8

for a double portion of wings and a quid for sauces. The 10oz burger for £10 was one of the best I’ve had, and trust me; I’m a bit of a burger-expert! Cooked medium rare, it was beyond juicy and had me wondering why, apart from the risk or a coronary, I didn’t just live on a diet of burgers. For the more health-conscious among us, they serve some beautiful salads, such as their butternut squash and chorizo for £7. When I go back though I would find it hard to resist their aptly named Trailer Trash Fries for £3.50... a veritable floozy of a dish that involves slathering fries in candied bacon, smoked paprika, BBQ sauce and cheese... if this is the sort of dish they eat then just show me that trailer! Upon leaving I started wishing that Neighbourhood was in my... well... neighbourhood. However after my experience as Schwarzenegger would say ‘I’ll be back’.

FILM

CONVERSATIONS ON CREATIVITY By Wayne Imms Brighton-based journalist and author Amy Raphael has recently seen the publication of her new book on Danny Boyle. I do like a decent book on my favourite subject, which is film, of course. For me Danny Boyle: Creating Wonder was an excellent read, very interesting, and it’s bound to appeal to those interested in the complex art of filmmaking. Amy’s book comprises a series of extensive and highly insightful conversations with the highly respected filmmaker. They discuss each of his films, including his debut, Shallow Grave, to his recent work, Trance, as well Boyle’s role as the Olympics’ Artistic Director, which gained him status as a national treasure. Here, Amy Raphael gives us an insight into the book as well as her passions which include film. Would it be fair to say that film and music are your main interests? Yes. Film for me is provocative, visceral, immersive and distracting. Music is emotional, uplifting and part of the everyday fabric of my life. I’m in heaven if a good film has a great soundtrack. I edited a few fanzines at school and mostly wrote about music in my first job at The Face magazine in the early 90s. Since then I’ve written about both film and music. For many years you’ve clearly combined your interest in these art forms with journalism. What made you want to become a journalist? The journalist in Abba: The Movie. I saw the film when it came out in 1977 at the age of ten. I loved the idea of chasing a band around the world for an interview. Little did I know this would one day wear thin... My love of film comes from my dad, who used to take me to see films every weekend when I was a kid. He smuggled me into Monty Python and the Holy Grail when I was eight. What does film mean to you? Everything. It defines the pop cultural moments in my life. This sounds ludicrously pretentious, but I can feel something shifting in me when I see a film like Blue Valentine. Best of all it’s what I do with my 8-year-old daughter most weekends. I can now even happily accept that not every family film has to be up there with Toy Story 3. You’ve extensively written about and interviewed many key figures within the film world, notably the highly respected British directors Mike Leigh and Danny Boyle. First with Leigh, for your book, Mike Leigh on Mike Leigh, can you describe your research process? It’s laborious, but fun. I watched every film Mike has made, apart from one the BBC wiped. And then I watched them all

again. I read every interview I could find on the internet and in existing film books. I immersed myself in Mike Leigh world for an entire winter. It must have been important to have gained a good rapport with Leigh through your conversational interviews with him. Tell us about this and how it went for you. The first time we ever met we argued. I was interviewing Mike for Esquire about how being British defined him. He agreed to the interview and then refused to answer any questions. I stood up for myself. He invited me to do a Q&A with him at the Curzon cinema in London for All or Nothing and then, out of the blue, asked me if I’d like to collaborate on the book. I’m guessing he likes people who stand up to him. We also share a dry sense of humour and a love of sarcasm. Would you say that the reader gains a greater insight of the subject through conversational interviews, instead of actual biographies, which use interview extracts? I personally like the intimacy of conversational interviews because everything is shown in context. The ebb and flow of conversation is naturalistic, although of course, no one speaks as they would like to be read so the editing process is not to be underestimated. Having read your new book, Danny Boyle: Creating Wonder, it’s clear that you first met and interviewed him many years ago. I gather that during that time you got to know him very well and I assume you struck up a friendship and a real trust. I interviewed Danny for the NME when Trainspotting came out. I then approached him in spring of 2009, after Slumdog’s Oscar haul, to see if he’d collaborate on a book with me. I would hope by now that Danny trusts me. When working at the end of last year on Creating Wonder, which is an updated version of the original biography including chapters on the opening ceremony and Trance, I noticed that he has developed a short hand with me. It wasn’t hugely useful as I had to keep making him spell his answers out. You must be a fan of his work. Do you have a favourite of his films? I can remember exactly how I felt when I saw a press preview of Trainspotting – pinned to my seat, stunned, the adrenalin coursing through my body. I love 28 Days Later and Sunshine, though both fall apart in the third act. And I cry every time I watch 127 Hours. James Franco is a revelation. Finally, being a Brighton resident, how aware of its filmmaking community, and for you, how does the city cater to your passion for film? I’ve been a paid-up member of the Duke of York’s since I moved here in 2000. I like the way their programming embraces both indie and commercial films. It’s great that we now have Duke’s at Komedia offering food as well as film. I’m no snob though. I often take my daughter to Cineworld at the marina because of the free parking.
