MAY 2014 This month sees the 20th anniversary of The Channel Tunnel opening, Nelson Mandela’s inauguration as South Africa’s first black president and the release of Beastie Boys’ Ill Communication album. So will May 2014 have anything as momentous in store? Can the soar-away excitement of a European election or an underwhelming FA Cup final provide good content for the history books? With Brighton Festival, Brighton Fringe, The Great Escape, Artists Open Houses, Eurovision, Star Wars Day and a Bank Holiday, all happening in the next four weeks, who cares? We’ll be too busy to worry about any kind of legacy. FESTIVAL GUIDE PAGE 50

May is a busy time for everyone. The sun is threatening to come out and there are plenty of reasons to hit the street. As a result we’ve become festival crazy this month. There’s no avoiding the big three festivals hitting the City. So we’re taking a look at Brighton Festival, with another rundown of its highlights and an interview with Guest Artistic Director, Hofesh Shechter. We also speak with ground-breaking theatre company Tangled Feet, ahead of their enormous free event One Million coming to Black Rock. Brighton Fringe also gets the BN1 treatment, including interviews with two diametrically opposed funnymen, the sardonic Mike Wozniak, and clown-extraordinaire Red Bastard. Plus we look at the Spiegeltent and those cross-dressing cuties The Ladyboys of Bangkok. Music fans will know The Great Escape is taking over the City centre on Thu 8 – Sat 10 May, so we get to chat with the event’s director, Kat Morris. We also interview Brighton band Phantom Runners, and get all pop-up by taking a look at the best of The Alternative Great Escape festival. With rising living costs, soaring energy prices and another hike in the local bus fares, you might be feeling a little financially disadvantaged this month. Don’t worry; we’re also taking a look at all the fabulous free events May has to offer. Feeling hungry? We can cook up something wonderful with Foodies Festival on Hove Lawns, and visit the all-new Curry Leaf Café and the Hare and Hounds. We’re also showing off the best Festival Fashions and offering a chance to win Shakedown VIP tickets. We’re also looking at our crystal balls with previews of Kemptown Carnival, which will see our BN1 Music Stage thrilling the crowds, and this summer’s massive Pride event.

As you’d expect we’ve got all the usual Theatre, Music, Film and Comedy previews to show you the best entertainment in Brighton & Hove. Plus all the news and features highlighting why our odd little City is one of the best places in the world. If all of this isn’t enough, then head over to www.bn1magazine. co.uk for even more news, previews, reviews, features and competitions. Welcome to the party, you’re sure to have a great time.

Plenty of film action this month, as we whip up some interest in BN1’s Ourscreen screening of Zoolander and our new Film event at Dukes at Komedia, plus our New to Cinema feature.

OURSCREEN Imagine a world where you could choose what film you wanted to see at the cinema, where you wanted to see it and when was the most convenient time for you. Ourscreen is a brand new concept that puts local cinemas in the hands of their film fans. Film enthusiasts in Brighton should consider themselves lucky to be part of something very special that is happening at both The Duke of York’s and Dukes at Komedia cinemas. Innovative company Ourscreen is people powered cinema at its best, providing a platform in which film fans can choose what they want to see at the cinema, thanks to a varied movie catalogue and the participating local cinemas. Toby King, Marketing Manager for Duke of York’s and Dukes at Komedia Picturehouses, enthusiastically tells me how they are perfect for this concept; “Duke of Yorks and Dukes at Komedia are a natural home for Ourscreen. Generally people who visit us are quite knowledgeable about movies and are interested in independent and lesser-known films as well as the generic blockbusters. These are the people who are pro-active about making a choice about what they want to see.” Having started off successfully in the States, Ourscreen are now running their test phase across 7 different and carefully selected cinemas in London, Brighton, Edinburgh, Norwich and Liverpool. As someone who works regularly catering for his potential customers’ needs, Toby emphasised how useful something like Ourscreen can be when it comes to those films that have a limited release and regrettably don’t get a screening at the Brighton cinemas. ‘Terry Gilliam’s new film ‘The Zero Theorem’ is the perfect example of a film that didn’t get a release here but thanks to it being included in the Ourscreen film catalogue, someone was able to set up a public screening for those who really

want to see it on the big screen.’ (At the time that I spoke to Toby, this screening had to sell 23 more seats for the screening to actually take place due to the Ourscreen minimum seating policy. In the time between then and now, ‘The Zero Theorem’ has since hit its target and more, meaning Gilliam fans will get to see his latest offering on Thur 1 May at Dukes at Komedia.) Whether you are dying to see a new release that didn’t make it to the cinema or missed one when it was showing originally; if you have an old favourite movie that would thrive from a big screen showing or are simply planning a cinematic birthday night, ‘The key is making it an event’ Toby advises me. ‘Whether it is for business, education or simply pleasure, Ourscreen provides a great basis to spread the word privately or open it up to anyone’. Once we take a deeper interest in the world of film, we fall into a community of people who are passionate about cinema and who now have the chance to explore your options further than the simple weekly schedule. Power to the people, the cinema is your oyster.

We have a very special Ourscreen event at Duke’s at Komedia on Fri 23 May with a late night showing of Zoolander (£9.50). There will be a FREE Blue Steel Cocktail on arrival, prizes up for grabs, fancy dress competitions and exclusive Zoolander art prints for the first 50 who book tickets online. THE QUIRKY BOUTIQUE WEDDING FAIR Brighton Centre Sun 11 May

The Quirky Boutique Wedding Fair is Belle’s Events latest venture. This event is for couples looking to get married the way THEY want to. If you have been to wedding fairs and your heart has sunk, if you have picked up wedding magazines that have made you want to elope to a remote island then this is the day out for you. What better place than Brighton during May (festival month) to do it! It’s only £2 to get in and they have over 50 exhibitors to whet your quirky appetite. Not only do they have a mass of unique suppliers showcasing new ideas but you will have the chance to witness the ‘Doily Days Loves Weddings‘ magazine LIVE Styled Photo Shoot, you’ll be entertained by performers that are available to book for your wedding, and you can stay for lunch at Petal & Feast and a cocktail with The Cockatoo! Kelly, the founder of Belle’s Events, told us that “Belle’s Events was born out of suffering an extreme allergic reaction to average, boring & stuffy fairs full of chair covers and chocolate fountains. I took my beautiful VW Beetle, Belle (Sussex Love Bug) along to a fair and was just horrified at what was on offer. I launched Belle’s Events to support businesses like my own, now it has taken over somewhat from Sussex Love Bug but you can always find Belle flirting with passing couples at all my events. I also feel very lucky to have the support of Johnny Zero, Helen of Doily Days, Kitty of South Coast Swing Events and Draped who will all be helping to create this alternative wedding extravaganza.”

A must see performance this month led by musical director Chris Clavo and Choreographer La Joaquina. The authentic outfit travel the globe with their exhilarating and sublime performances leaving their audiences in amazement and awe. Described as “The finest in flamenco” by Time Out magazine, the Express will be gracing our shoreline for one night only at The Brunswick. In their own words: “Flamenco is music, sex and history all rolled into one. The fiercest expression of the human spirit ever devised. The Flamenco Express policy is to obtain the best flamenco performers available, give them total artistic freedom, and present them to international audiences. The result is an amazing diversity of artistic voices all committed to delivering their own view of the world.”This one’s not listed in the festival brochures so tickets are available only at www.thebrunswick.net

KEMP TOWN CARNIVAL SAT 7 JUNE IMAGES BY DAVID SMITH

Roll up, roll up! On Sat 7 June Kemp Town Carnival fills the east end of Brighton once again, bringing with it the vibrant party atmosphere that has become so cherished by locals. Set in the quirky and wonderful Kemp Town village, the event is considered to be Brighton’s biggest street festival. Started originally as a small village fete back in the mid-90s, the event has since expanded in size and popularity, and now attracts more than 20,000 people. Focusing on showcasing local businesses and musicians, the carnival features an array of brilliant and talented local bands. In the past, artists such as Carnival Collective, Derriere and Fat 45 have played across four open-air stages. This year, the BN1 Stage has been added to further boost the carnival’s appeal, with acts including Phantom Runners set to perform in this new area. But it’s not just music at the Carnival, with a varied range of events taking place through the day to cater for nearly any taste imaginable.

The Nautical Training Corps, The Brighton School of Samba and Sussex University Fencing Club. Local businesses will still be open throughout the day, often with extra stalls outside their shops, meaning you need never leave the mayhem. Joining the Carnival this year is Sugar Rush Fudge, Brighton’s favourite fudge company, who will be on the street with their delicious, locally-made, product. Just follow that sweet buttery aroma. The Carnival is currently looking for volunteers to get involved in this exciting day. People are needed for a variety of positions, both on the day and prior to it. Roles include: artist liaison, graphic designers, stage managers and break-down teams. Having volunteers help throughout the event is one way the carnival ensures it returns each year to entertain the crowds. If you don’t feel up to volunteering, you can always head over to one of the Carnival’s next fundraiser on Fri 2 May at The Blind Tiger.

This community based event will offer visitors a chance to learn break dancing, watch some brilliant street theatre and experience the full horror of the Carnival’s notorious Grand Custard Pie Fight - one of the fun and messy highlights of the event. There’s also a children’s parade and entertainment, as well as: Samba bands, Tea dancing and much more taking place all day. The Carnival has worked with many local community groups and educational services in the past, including: T21 Dance,

BLEECH The Hope // Tues 6 May Alternative rock band Bleech provide a sound which has somewhat been lost in today’s music scene. The trio have been loyal to their guitar infused style, chopped with murky, mystical lyrics delivered by vocalist Jen O’Neill. Their latest album entitled ‘Humble Sky’ comes with a more stripped down sound than their previous work, helped by the experience earned by the numerous concerts the group has performed. The album is inspired by the sounds of Neil Young, Rodriguez and Joni Mitchell to name a few, with the group providing a charming, upbeat but sinister sound throughout the album. They have become known as a group who will deliver a show regardless of the size or stage, with over 400+ gigs providing all the experience and knowledge needed to ensure each show is as special as the next.

As part of Brighton Festival, the much loved indie rock band Wild Beasts will play in the Brighton Dome, with support from These New Puritans and Adult Jazz. After releasing multiple acclaimed albums, the most recent suitably titled album ‘Present Tense’ comes with a sound which is much more synthesized and experimental than their previous work. The single off the album ‘Wanderlust’ perfectly encapsulates this dreamy, cosmic sound from the foursome, with Hayden Thorpe’s raw voice still being prominent and key to their updated style. The band have had deserved success in the past, being nominated for the prestigious Mercury prize and winning the London Awards for Art and Performance in 2011, with ‘Present Tense’ receiving multiple high scoring ratings from numerous critics and music magazines. www.brightondome.org

FOXES

FOXES Concorde 2 // Tues 20 May

CHARLOTTE OC The Hope // Wed 21 May

Louisa Rose Allen, aka Foxes, is a singer from Southampton who has taken the UK by storm with her upbeat, dance/ synth pop style tracks. After appearing on a track with electro house head Zedd, Foxes picked up the Best Dance Recording Grammy featuring in the track named ‘Clarity’. Also working with Rudimental and Fall Out Boy, Foxes has now formed her own large fanbase courtesy of her emotion filled lyrics wrapped up in catchy electronic beats and pops.

Boasting raw, stripped down vocals, Sheffield born singer Charlotte OC is an up and coming artist whose soulful, enigmatic music has turned heads. Her latest EP, ‘Colour My Heart’ demonstrates perfectly this dark pop sound that is starting to reign in much intrigue and attention to the young lady.

With her debut album, ‘Glorious’ finally being released on May 12, after being pushed back from Feb, the Southampton girl will deliver an energetic show off the back of her recent success. She will remain in the spotlight as one of the UK’s most exciting new young artists, who continues to mature and strengthen her sound.

EZRA FURMAN The Haunt // Thur 22 May

Indie rock/folk singer Ezra returns once again to the Haunt, after his latest solo album, Day Of the Dog was released late last year, earning a modest 5/5 score from the Guardian. The album contains enigmatic lyrics and a charming guitar sound that has rightly earned the respect and praise it deserves.

An intimate gig at the Hope will be another platform for the singer to showcase her talent, and show why she is fast becoming one of the most exciting singers in the music industry. Rare is it to see someone who has such promising song-writing ability whilst also possessing a good ear in creating music that is cohesive and wellstyled. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/hope

MCBUSTED Brighton Centre // Sat 24 - Sun 25 May The dream reunion of both Mcfly and Busted is real, with the two bands fusing together to create the supergroup McBusted for a once in a lifetime tour. Two dates are set for Brighton, with the extra day added due to the sheer demand for the heartthrob group.

This is Ezra’s first gig in Brighton with his new touring band, The Boyfriends backing him, allowing the man to recreate the high energy and passion in the studio to a live audience. Certainly one not to be missed.

Back in November, Matt Willis and James Bourne announced they would be joining the Mcfly band for a tour, comprising of both the best of Mcfly and Busted under one roof. This dream team has now over 30 UK dates, with sold out shows across most of them. The group have also increased excitement by announcing a studio album will be made in the future. The tour features songs from both groups, as well as some more special tracks.

RED BASTARD

IMAGE © BY JUSTIN BERNHAUT

FRINGE FESTIVAL

The star of a larger than life clown show, Red Bastard is noticeably lacking a bucketful of tissue paper, or a ramshackle car packed full of rambunctious comrades. Written and performed by Eric Davis, this show draws from a greater spectrum than the hackneyed antics found in 70s circuses, concentrating instead on something deeper, and perhaps a little darker. A paradoxical mixture of the grotesque and beautiful, Red Bastard takes his audience’s view of the world and turns it against them, much in the way a traditional French Bouffant clown subversively mocks the audience. “When an audience laughs at a clown, the clown is the target of the joke, their ridiculousness and their flaws,” Davis tells me, after coming offstage in Sydney. “In a sense Red Bastard is turning that around.”

Developing the award-winning absurdist Red Bastard has been a long process. Training in dance and theatre at The University of Kansas, Davis found himself under the tutorage of two ex-Jacques Lecoq School teachers. Evidentially this had a profound effect on the creation of the Red character. Spending almost ten years working in improvisational theatre, Davis also studied in Toronto, where he learnt about both Bouffant and Clown Through Mask work, a curious blend of Native North American and European clowning techniques. “It’s like sacred in some sense. There are clown gods within the mythology and there’s a high possibility for social impact through the clown, not just entertainment.” Whilst performing in a show called The Bastard American Show, Davis created a strange red character, which pulled together everything he’d learnt so far. After this show’s demise, he continued performing as the oddlyshaped personality. The concept for the current show was

conceived three years ago, as something offering a deeper impact on the audience. “I think the show is maybe 85% of where I want to take it. Then I’ll be done with it,” Davis laughs. Whilst getting emails from people whose lives have been changed by the show, Davis has received a few items of hatemail too. He admits the show might not be for everybody. But the chances are, if you’re open–minded, the average (if there is such a thing) Red Bastard performance will be something you can interact with and benefit from. At some shows people have quit their jobs, proposed to partners and resolved to open up to relatives. Even after a performance, it still affects everyone involved. “Sometimes people do incredible things at the show. Next time it could be you or one of the people reading this article, who know? I don’t know either, so it’s exciting for me.” Davis maintains he doesn’t hold out for something wonderful to happen, but every reaction holds an interest for him. Even a lack of response offers a meditation for him. There’s an element of Red Bastard bouncing around in everyone’s sub-consciousness. We all harbour notions of behaving in a more outrageous and less self-conscious way, of pushing boundaries and creating our own sense of freedom. Red’s abnormally curvaceous shape also echoes through society and history. The huge breasts and big buttocks of the world’s oldest fertility carving bear more than a passing resemblance to Red Bastard’s shape. Davis says he’s didn’t see the 35,000 year-old carving before designing his costume, but isn’t surprised, given MANKIND’S obsession with everything curvy and voluptuous. “People are drawn to the shape of the character, it goes back a long way.” Is there one event in history Red Bastard’s persistent antagonism could have been changed? Rather than cheering up the doomed of a sinking Titanic, or disturbing the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, Davis opts for the moment John Locke established his idea of property as a natural right. Locke’s simple, but fundamental idea, helped shape America’s political system and its population’s attitude to land ownership. “It’d be interesting to see what would’ve happened if that hadn’t taken off the way it did. What would happen to countries and how we treat each other as human beings?” So there’s evidentially purpose in the incongruously shaped provocateur, it’s just up to the world to hear his message now. A scarlet whirlwind that forces his audience to confront their insecurities and shortcomings, its possible Red Bastard hasn’t read the Eight Clown Commandments, an apocryphal guide to conduct when painted up. “I probably don’t follow any of those. I follow some guidelines that my teachers have given me. One thing I was taught was that if you try and pin a clown down to do one thing, they’re not going to fucking do it.” BY STUART ROLT

Red Bastard comes to Komedia, on Fri 16 – Tue 20 May, as part of Brighton Fringe.

There are a large number of great shows in the Brighton Festival calendar. We wouldn’t be so presumptuous as to tell you which to attend, but here’s a few you should certainly consider.

One of the most influential figures in Russian theatre, Dmitry Krymov’s deeply moving, visually majestic theatrical experiences are rarely seen in the UK. His bewitching Opus No. 7 pitches the audience headlong into a world where objects, sounds and people can change in the blink of an eye. An ensemble of performers use larger-than-life puppets, duelling pianos, living walls and blizzards of newsprint to explore an elusive and frightening past. Festival Guest Director Hofesh Shechter’s new work, Sun, confronts the horror of colonialism with a hint of sharp humour. Perfection becomes warped and harmony gives way to a visceral depiction of antagonism and violence. This co-commission by Brighton Festival sees a company of 14 dancers, accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack that includes original music by Shechter himself.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

What Happens To The Hope At The End Of The Evening sees two men meeting in the middle of their lives and at the outer edges of their friendship. This extraordinary new play, by award-winning theatre-makers Andy Smith and Tim Crouch, sees the pair strive for common ground, they fight and fail, as the wine is drunk. As their world falls apart, the theatre comes alive as a place for community and change. Invisible Flock invite you to help create a map of happiness in Brighton. This life-affirming project, called Bring the Happy, will create a portrait of people’s lives, taking fond memories from local residents and weaving them into a spectacular live event that celebrates the happiness of Brighton. For ten days, ONCA Gallery will be transformed into a giant 3D map of Brighton on which you can plot your own happy memories. A first kiss, a longed-for baby, a chance encounter: where did it happen and how good did it make you feel? As the people of Brighton mark their moments of happiness, we can all explore what has made people happy – and where. Finally all the memories collected from Brighton will be shared, in all their beautiful, tragic, ridiculous and occasionally mundane glory, in Bring the Happy Live at The Old Market. Outstanding six-piece band Hope & Social will perform a show that sits between a wedding and a wake, in an extravagant event specially created to celebrate happiness and where we find it.

Following their UK debut at Brighton Festival 2012 with the haunting Land’s End, Berlin return with the UK Premiere for another unique theatrical experience. Perhaps all the Dragons introduces its audience to the people behind stories, both big and small, in the international media. These stories are transformed into 30 filmed monologues orchestrated by dramaturgy that gives them coherence and interaction. This imaginative project challenges the way we tell stories and the way we hear them.

The new work from Vanishing Point, a Theatre company with a reputation for subverting reality and making the ordinary extraordinary, sees its world premiere at Brighton Festival. Tomorrow explores what it is to grow old and be cared for, when myth and spirituality have been subsumed by what we all know to be true: we are born, we live and we die. A young man suddenly finds himself in an unfamiliar place, where everyone seems to know him and strange rules apply. Everyone seems to have his best interests at heart, but he is not at liberty to leave.

Bizarrely Opening Night is on Brighton Festival’s closing night. Les Slovaks is a dance collective made up of five Slovakian friends who seek to find themselves and redefine their relationship, through moving and thinking collectively. As with all close friendships, little things mean a lot: gestures, glances and nuances are enough to unleash Les Slovaks’ physical creativity, allowing them to form and adapt their choreography in the moment. Edmund White is a master memoirist as well as a novelist of rare distinction, and in his latest book, Inside a Pearl, he details the sexiest and most exciting times in his life. In conversation with writer and broadcaster Simon Fanshawe, he recalls the 15 years he spent living in Paris and its intoxicating and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. A glittering cast of characters have played a part in his life, ranging from Yves St Laurent and Kristin Scott Thomas to Martin Amis and Susan Sontag. Don’t take our word that this small selection is the best Brighton Festival has to offer. Check their website for details on this year’s entire exciting and invigorating programme:

Brighton Festival’s Guest Artistic Director Hofesh Shechter sees his role clearly. Helping to curate the festival is like making an art piece, but over a longer length of time and using other peoples work. In creating an experience where the pieces have a connection, and people see more than one event, an audience can move towards gaining a sense of the world. Shechter always thought about taking a month in Brighton, when he retired, to see the Festival. Now he has the chance to witness, and impact upon, this event he’s admired for years. “I guess being part of the Festival, actually being able to see the work and have that experience is really amazing,” Shechter says. Brighton Festival combines the fun and the challenging, things that inspire and things that make people question social structures and their sense of identity. “These are questions that are many times asked in art, but we hope that through the programme this year we bring an interesting angle to that.” It’s difficult for Shechter to pick a favourite work from the plethora on offer this May. If he could, and scheduling allowed, he’d catch every work. Something he is hoping to see is Opus 7, an experimental theatre piece with a strong visual element. Also coming to Brighton is choreographer William Forsythe, someone he’s been inspired by since the beginning of his career. “We have the absolute privilege to see a work of his here. Interestingly it is not a work of choreography for dancers.” Forsythe has created an installation titled Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time No.2. This stunning work makes people move within its space, in a sense Forsythe is choreographing with people he’ll never meet. “This is something I am really looking forward to not only seeing, but being part of.”

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

Shechter’s deep involvement with the Brighton Festival and Dome has lasted over five years. The growth of his Hofesh Shechter Company happened whilst in residence at the Brighton Dome and he’s very grateful for this relationship. “I think having the right place to do your work and develop and have this kind of support is everything.” He stresses that you can come up with great ideas but if you don’t have factual studio space to work in, or investment in the work, it just doesn’t happen. Now he’s been put in the position to be able to commission and programme works for the Brighton Festival. “It’s a beautiful kind of way to close the circle and to continue a relationship that is about creating opportunities and developing things. It is a very

strong relationship.” The latest piece his company have created is called Sun, which he describes as a playful, naughty and fun, but quite challenging, little piece of dance. It presents very pastoral visuals with a disturbing reality lurking beneath. It shows and deals with deceit, lies and illusions. “I really love that tension between something that would appear perfect and something dangerous underneath.” Brighton’s viewed by Shechter as a city with a great deal of character. He travels across the UK with his company and realises Brighton possesses something very unique. “I don’t know whether it is the architecture or the people. It doesn’t matter. There is no need to explain it. There is an exciting feeling about the City and there is something about the Festival that creates even more of a sense of happening, a sense of excitement, a sense of a focused buzz and a sense of sharing.” Brighton Festival is about sharing experiences in a concentrated time and place. This, he says, is like a concentrated version of Brighton. “We have a rhythm of life and then suddenly there are events happening for a lot of people and there is something tempting about it, something exciting about it, there is something fun about it. I think it makes it easier for people to get out of the house and take part, observe and explore different things.“ Brighton Festival takes place on Sat 3 - Sun 25 May 2014, in venues across the City. brightonfestival.org www.hofesh.co.uk Image by © JakeWalters

TANGLED FEET How do you get onto the career ladder, when all the rungs are broken? This is what Tangled Feet are asking, at a time when 18-25 year olds are the hardest hit by the UK’s economic downturn. Tangled Feet have defined themselves by delivering ambitious outdoor performances. Their new show One Million tells the story of the 1,000,000 unemployed under 25 year olds in the UK. Now, as this lost generation continues to grow, Tangled Feet bring their groundbreaking performance to Black Rock on Fri 23 - Sat 24 May, as part of the Brighton Festival.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

“We do lots of work with young people. What we could see looming was the scale and size of youth unemployment,” Nathan Curry, Tangled Feet’s artistic director, tells me. “We felt the only way to adequately tackle this, was to do a show as big and epic in size as the problem itself.” Stringing together physicality, imagery, music and text, Tangled Feet create truly immersive and socially conscious theatre experiences. In Brighton they’ll bring together around 100 local young people, spectacular large-scale effects, high-voltage physical theatre, live music and dazzling pyrotechnics, to capture the power, fragility and ambition of the next generation.

Constantly exploring and exploiting the relationship between audience and performer, the company maintains an inventive approach to venues, utilising public places, unusual spaces and theatres alike. Previous performances have graced shopping centres, parks, nightclubs, school playing fields, disused buildings and high streets. “In a public space you can have public argument about public life. Once a story is told in a public space, that space is never the same again.” By staging such a large show it’s hoped observers can appreciate the sheer power from weight of numbers that young people possess. But it’s a power that isn’t wielded nearly enough by this section of the community. Young people are increasingly becoming estranged from the political system, yet they are the demographic that should be demanding more from their representatives. The figures regarding political disinterest amongst young people are disheartening. An estimated 32% of 18- to 24-year-olds voted in 2013’s local elections. This corresponds to a noticeable decline in young voters that began in 2001. Unsurprising, given the way politicians engage with this demographic. “There’s a huge amount of disenfranchisement in that community. They think they’re powerless. One of the things the show tries to articulate is that there are lots of changes they can make.”

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 23 ]

One of the show’s core themes argues that it is possible to ignore the current work culture and create your own opportunities. Curry has seen a growing number of young people are shifting away from following the previous generation‘s career choices. One Million’s core motif is the ladder. It represents the common job cycle, with new employees starting at the bottom. Success brings movement up the ladder, to a better view, if they conform. In the UK space is limited, housing is limited and jobs are limited. We are also faced with a tiny amount of people controlling a disproportionate amount of the resources.

“We can’t go on feeding this monster. Something has to change. We have to get better at sharing.”

In a society where there are few jobs for young people, this age group is increasingly starting new businesses, exploring new approaches to working and essentially ignoring the system. Growing up, Curry felt he’d be joining a world that had distinctive structure, but what he sees now is young people eager to change the society they are joining. “Young people have amazing ideas. We should let them, in a way, lead. Because I think they’ll redesign how things are done.” Curry assures me he’s not intending to empower an uprising on the Coty’s beach, at least not a political one. But he is convinced Brighton is the perfect place to spark a cultural revolution. Young people have grown up with a new and technologically advanced set of communication tools. If they realise it or not, this gives them power. Even the humble smartphone can be an instrument of change. The ability to send out a message of any kind is immensely powerful, especially when the simplest of videos, thoughts and observations can be instantly sent around the world. So can a large scale outdoor performance, as well as being positive and uplifting entertainment, also act as an instrument of change? “Theatre is a collective experience. This can be hugely transformative,“ Curry muses. “It has a huge potential to engender, not only social change, but personal change.” www.tangledstreets.com www.brightonfestival.org

MIKE WOZNIAK As I eventually get through to Mike Wozniak, he’s resignedly waiting at Newcastle Station, a trip to Glasgow inexplicably delayed. In an attempt to lighten the mood, I mention his Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination in 2013, asking if he’s returning this year. Unfortunately, especially for the fluidity of our phone conversation, he’s no longer doing Edinburgh’s festival, due to acting commitments on his Channel 4 TV show “Man Down”. This is fortunate for Brighton Fringe however, as his new stand-up show now provides another UK festival exclusive when it comes to The Warren this month. Wozniak describes Brighton as a good place to muck about and try out new stuff. “It’s got loads of nice little monthly nights, in places like rooms above pubs, that people are lovingly curating,” he warmly tells me. Starting off at medical school, and never really considering comedy as a viable career option, Wozniak assumed all comedians were born into their craft. After a few outings with a sketch group, he realised not everyone on the comedy scene was in a circus or came out of a brightly coloured egg. From then on, he simply couldn’t stop.

FRINGE FESTIVAL

As a performer, he appears distinctly old school, due to his fine retro moustache and garments seemingly supplied by Les Dawson’s tailor. His onstage acerbic diatribes could be described, in polite circles, as daring. As far as I can tell, or hope, it’s all rather tongue in cheek though. The title of his new show is Master of Disguise, where Wozniak will be firing some truth missiles into the audience. In case he’s expounded enough of his views on society, he’s now revealing his other side, viewing the show as an exercise in seeing how honest he can be. Apparently he’s done some terrible things, and this is now his opportunity to reveal all.

Laughing, I ask what he means, are we talking about illegal or immoral acts? After all we’ve heard this sort of thing before from performers. A promised blaze of controversy often turns out to be nothing more than a damp squib. But there’s something in his tone when he assures me he’s offering something far more sinister. Wozniak then tantalisingly places his new show where the lines would intersect on an imaginary toxic Venn diagram. Now slightly alarmed at the momentousness of the forthcoming confessions, I ask if he’s got a good lawyer. “I have no legal representation at all, I have no intention of discovering what I can and can’t say.” The audience, and their reaction to the show, will dictate how far Wozniak will go, as will how drunk he is. But are there any hints for an audience wishing to solicit his more salacious material? “They probably have to look like they have done some terrible things as well. The more disreputable they appear, the more likely I am to share. It should be quite easy in Brighton.” In an age when comedians arguably behave in a more interesting way than rock stars, Wozniak maintains he’s been following the rock ‘n’ roll path for over 15 years. So now he’s moved onto practicing yoga and planning a series of comeback tours. He says he’ll spend the rest of the year declaring his last ever gig, and then changing his mind, to create even more demand for his shows. “I’ll be doing arenas by the end of the year,” he laughs. Mike Wozniak: Master Of Disguise comes to The Warren, on Sat 24 – Mon 26 May, as part of Brighton Fringe www.mrmikewozniak.com / www.otherplaceproductions.co.uk

’TIS PITY SHE’S A WHORE

MAJOR TOM

A BERLIN KABARET

Thu 8 - Fri 9 May 7.30pm, Sat 10 May 2.30pm and 7.30pm Theatre Royal

Mon 12 May, 7:30pm

Incest, religion and corrupt morality collide in the tale of a brother and sister, locked in a relationship that defies taboos and that sparks a passionate descent into hell. Even after nearly 400 years, few plays are as controversial as this dark and violent Jacobean tragedy, and few are as intense. Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s internationally acclaimed production updates the action to a contemporary setting which, despite our progressive attitudes to sex and social boundaries, emphasises the play’s ability to shock audiences of any era. Thrillingly paced as it hurtles to its climax, ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore is classic theatre with a startlingly modern outlook. www.atgtickets.com

After touring internationally and more recently throughout the UK, Brighton’s own Victoria Melody returns to her home town with her trusty canine companion and a story about British fascination with celebrity, beauty and winning. Major Tom is the story of how an average 34 year old became a beauty queen and how her unruly pet basset hound, Major Tom, became a championship show dog. Melody documented her year through film and photography and the performance has a strong multi-media element. Her eccentric, ethnographic approach to making performances finds her immersing herself in other people’s worlds. www.theoldmarket.com

Drawn from the writings of Edward Walker, a gay man forcibly outed in 50s San Diego, this show combines cabaret, memoir and theatre to effect keen cultural satire around sexuality, masculinity and the costs of silence. At a time when battles rage across U.S. staterooms and courtrooms over marriage equality and LGBT rights, the piece’s focus on sexuality and inclusion could not be more apt. Original songs with “razor-sharp lyrics” (Andrea Moore) reveal California suburbs awash in pool play, foreplay, playboys & word play. The lively and hilarious show explores coming of age (and coming to terms) in the land of don’t ask-don’t tell. www.dukeboxtheatre.com

For 60 years Joseph Heller’s explosive satire on the absurdities of bureaucracy has been hailed as one of the definitive novels of the last century. During the closing months of World War II, Captain John Yossarian is trapped in the cycle of an inescapable war. As he and his airmen struggle to maintain their sanity – and their lives – amidst the madness of military reasoning, Yossarian is thwarted by the merciless Catch-22. Bringing together a superb ensemble to the fast-moving theatricality of Heller’s cynical vision, this production is edgy theatre that will appeal to anyone who has ever questioned ‘the system’, or found themselves in a Catch-22. www.atgtickets.com

DYNAMITE GALLERY

Sun 11 May Hove Lagoon

1A Jubilee Street

So do you fancy something for the weekend Sir? Brighton Big Balls is taking place on Sun 11 May, with everyone welcome to take part. This daft event sees competitors dash over a short 3k course, consisting of beaches and downright silly obstacles, whilst all the time carrying two lightweight balls under their arms.

Open only five months, Dynamite Gallery has already established itself as one of Brighton’s most exciting and innovative galleries.

The event, which began in 2013, is in aid of male cancer research and treatment via Cancer Research UK. All of the balls are matched to the participants, so if you start the race, you must finish it with you own balls. Something which leads to chaos as friends and foes do anything they can to prevent this! For more information visit: www.brightonbigballs.com

Priding themselves on showcasing work from a unique mix of international artists, working in many different styles, the gallery’s owners bring a large amount of art to the UK that has never been seen here before. “The idea of changing someone’s perception of what they like, in terms of art, means a lot to me,” expresses Henry Gomez, the founder of Dynamite Gallery. This large, flexible space is also now available for private hire. For more details visit: www.dynamitegallery.com

THE GREAT ESCAPE 2014 KELIS

So now the weekend of The Great Escape 2014 is about to overrun us. With over 300 bands playing at 35 Brighton venues, on Thu 8 – Sat 10 May, it’s a massive event to get your head around. In case you still haven’t made up your mind which bands to see, maybe we can throw some light on the subject. Despite being a NEW music festival, there are plenty of breakthrough artists to quench your thirst for the ‘mainstream’. The eclectic, but wonderfully accessible, Glass Animals, and the sublime Scandinavian pop sounds of Mø and Little Dragon, or even Sheffield dream-popsters Blessa, should all fulfil any yearnings for a good tune. As should new Rick Rubin signing Clare Maguire, she may look like a moody goth, but her music couldn’t be more different. There’s plenty of six-string action for all you indie types out there. Bernard Butler’s new project Trans, who are redefining what it is to be a guitar band, and the ever present hypnotic drone of Telegram, who’ll be drawing a big crowd of hipsters eager to wig out. The festival is offering many of you the chance to actually hear Childhood, a guitar band whose name precedes them. If want it edgy, you should take in LE1F, the convention defying New-York rapper and DJ. We guarantee an incendiary evening, as he’s taking back hip-hop, one show at a time. Maybe you’re visiting TGE2014 in hope of shaking off accumulated malaise from the working week with a good solid rock-out. So the fabulously rocking The Subways, Scots alt-rock gang Twin Atlantic or rage filled Brooklyn post-punkers Big Ups, will all sort out your pogoing requirements.

If you fancy something a little less raucous, then you could do worse than experience the beautiful, understated melodic strains of Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts graduates. All We Are. The fuzz-laden electronica, of laptop musician East India Youth recreating the sumptuous soundscapes of debut album Total Strife Forever, should also be something to sooth the soul. Here at BN1 we’ve got a lot of love for California’s The Neighbourhood, despite taking the art of the epic anthem to the precipice of being overblown. Somehow they manage to remain cool and hip, and best of all… they use the correct English spelling for their name. If you like it funky, or you like it Northern, or even Northern and Funky, we can’t recommend Smoove and Turrell enough. Their new album ‘Broken Toys’ comes out end of this month on Brighton’s own Jalapeño Records, and it’s pure quality. Incredibly there are still a few acts we’ve not heard yet. It’ll take a brave soul to see a band called Audience Killers, but who knows? They could be the highlight of the weekend. Similarly canine lovers may swerve Dog Is Dead, but as always at TGE, take a chance and invariably you get rewarded. So there it is. We’ve taken you as far as we can. The rest is up to you. So download the special TGE2014 app, get an idea of your schedule, withdraw plenty of money and wear your most comfortable pair of shoes. We’re going to have a party… www.greatescapefestival.com

ALTERNATIVE TGE Proving to be in no way a second thought, this year’s Alternative Escape is certainly rivalling the line-up of the official strand of events at The Great Escape. Not wanting to annoy the thousands of you who have bought your wristbands for TGE, but those without them are in for an absolute treat with a superb set of free performances across the city as part of The Alternative Escape. A whole manner of different promotion companies provide this annual sister festival alongside Lout’s ticketed three day weekend of new music, and this year 15 venues are host to some of the even newer, and even hotter, up-and-coming music. Certainly no-one will be missing out this year- in fact, it’s going to be a nightmare trying to fit it all in. As a result, here we have provided you with a quick guide to where you should be on each day from Wed 7 to Sat 10 May, so you can stay one step ahead of who is the future’s most promising stars. Kicking off the weekend early on the Wednesday night are a few small shows to get us punters warmed up for the

days ahead. The most favourable of which looks to be a showcase from SEXSW (South East x South West) at The Prince Albert. The night will be opened by Brighton based Garden Heart from 8pm, a sunny and melodic band with a beautiful three-piece harmony, who have been much likened to Florence and the Machine. Following them, Plymouth’s rock triad Black Foxxes and new-gaze inspired The Sleepwalks keep the ball rolling until promising headliners Patron take to the stage. Thursday however sees a full schedule across the city, but local band Common Tongues have put together what looks to be an amazing night of worldly, funky music at The Marwood coffee shop. The line-up is made up with a huge range of folkloric bands that include themselves, Time For T., The Cadbury Sisters and Ellie Ford. Shows start from 2pm and will be running late into the night. Decisions on where to be on Friday only get harder, but two events that stand out the most are two all day and night events of the newest names around at Neighbourhood and The Pav Tav. From midday, The Pav Tav will open their upstairs and downstairs to two different sets of shows, but it’s the downstairs line-up curated by Alcopop! Vs Big Scary Monsters that seems nail it year after year. With such a huge scope of talent that includes Tangled Hair, Johnny Foreigner and JAWS, this definitely high on list of what’s not to be missed for the weekend. Spindle magazine also return with another superb set of gigs at Neighbourhood that will see performances from Norwegian electronic pop Sea Change and the highly rated Eagles for Hands.

E V I T A N R E T L A E G T Ending this spectacular weekend of the freshest sounds are a whole selection of different shows that will perfectly wind up the festival. Our suggestions? Get yourself down to The Tube and check out massively appraised bands Tigercub and Whales in Cubicles - see what all the fuss is about for yourself. The club will be open after months of being closed exclusively for Alternative Escape with some great line-ups across the weekend. Other highly rated sets of shows will be running across the city well into the night at venues from Beyond Retro to Northern Lights. Any short walk through town will throw a whole manner of outstanding unofficial gigs and performances, it really is looking to a brilliant weekend of the newest musicians on the cusp of fame. Just get out and have a wander, who knows what you’ll come across. The Alternative Escape will take place over the city from Thur 8 – Sat 10 May. PHANTOM RUNNERS I have to ask, where does the name originate from? We’re not really sure! I think Adam had the name floating around before we even started the band, we went through loads of different names but kept coming back to Phantom Runners, it just stuck for some unknown reason.

What would you prefer to stick on a record, Robbie Williams doing his Stoke bad-boy rapping, or a William Shatner spoken word piece? Shatner. Hands down. With Brian Blessed as his hype man.

Can you describe your sound to our readers, using a rhyming couplet? Errrr... Lo-Fi Pop with guitars on top

You’re all set for the Great Escape this year. Is it going to be weird not attending as a fan? We’re going as fans too, there’s loads of great bands to see this year! Playing will just make it even more special.

You’ve been compared to a few classic bands, but are any of these declarations fair? We’ve heard some people compare us to The Cure and The Stone Roses, they’re massive influences obviously, so it’s nice for people to say that. Though I reckon those people might be surprised when they hear the tunes that we haven’t released yet...

What does the rest of the year have in store for you guys? It’s gonna be a busy one we reckon! We’ve got 3 new releases coming this summer, and we’re filming another video as we speak. We’re also recording a new EP later on in the year as well as a summer tour, a festival run and an autumn/winter tour. So keep your eyes and ears peeled!

What’s been the highlight for you guys so far? That’s tough, the good times keep on coming! Going on tour, recording with Huey Morgan and hearing our track on Radio 1 were all pretty special!

Are there any good misconceptions about the band yet? There’s been a few misconceptions about song meanings but we haven’t seen anything really stupid that has cracked us up... yet.

Have you had a chance to hang out with Huey Morgan? Is he as cool as he seems? Yeah he totally is, we hung out with him in the studio when we were recording, that guy has so many rock ‘n’ roll tales to tell! He’s a really genuine bloke too, he gave us great support while we were recording our EP. How important is a band’s style now? Do you guys dress yourselves, or is there an army of fashionistas lurking in the shadows? Nah, we all dress ourselves, except Josh, whose girlfriend does it! But yeah I suppose it is important to have a look, but you still have to be yourself, otherwise you’ll feel awkward and look like you have a pole up your backside.

If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be, and why? A little monkey that I could train to open cans of beer and tune guitars Which member of the band looks the best naked? Definitely Arron. How rock and roll are you? Any TV’s gone out the window yet, or are all these shenanigans passé? Ha! Just the other day we played to about 40 people crammed into a hotel room, we fed them all rum and it pretty much turned into a riot. We had crowd surfers, girls dancing on the bed, people jumping in the bath with all their clothes on. Everyone ended up covered in booze, blood, sweat and tears!

SPOTLIGHT:

INTERVIEW WITH KAT MORRIS THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR Everyone at BN1 is getting excited about The Great Escape festival, there’s no denying it! So when we got a chance to talk to Kat Morris - the Festival’s director, we saw a perfect opportunity to find out what goes on behind the scenes at this mammoth music event. What did you originally set out to do with The Great Escape, and did you achieve it? We set out to become Europe’s leading showcase festival for new music running alongside the best industry convention. And yes - we achieved it. How would you describe The Great Escape to someone who has never been? It’s a showcase festival for new artists. We showcase of 400 artists at 30+ venues across 3 days in Brighton. On top of that we run a convention event, panels, keynote speeches and industry conversations alongside networking forums and parties for delegates. Is there any rituals you and your team participate in over the festival’s weekend? Its such a big festival that everyone who works on production is constantly busy for three days straight, punctuated by two big productions meetings at 7am and 4pm daily. At the end of the festival we do enjoy a bit of drink to celebrate. Who doesn’t? What has been the highlight (musical or “otherwise”) over all these years? This is tough to say. Non-musical highlight, for me, is selling out the festival for the first time in 2013. It was a great moment for the TGE team. Musically, its got to be welcoming the bands that go on to conquer the world – Haim in 2012, Tinie Tempah in 2010, Jake Bugg in 2012 and Mumford & Sons in 2008. How do you balance hype against ability when booking your acts? It’s all about ability and live performance when we’re booking bands. Hype comes around an appearance at the festival. Many bands play more than once so immediately you can tell who’s getting the buzz by how easy or difficult it is to get into a second gig over the festival. What’s the greatest success story to come out of TGE? I would imagine the biggest success story musically to come out of the festival is probably Adele who played a Brighton café on the seafront to around 90 people. She’s done pretty well.

What’s the best moment of the weekend for you? I don’t get to watch much music as it’s so busy but I’ll always try to get to one gig so that’s usually my best moment – last year it was watching Palma Violets’ secret gig and one year watching Groove Armada playing the closing gig at the Corn Exchange. Give us three words - one for the week before TGE2014, one for TGE’s Friday night and one for the following weekend. One before – excitement One during – buzzing One after – celebration Tell us a The Great Escape secret... This year the festival will be hosting the largest amount of secret and surprise gigs than ever before – so I highly recommend everyone sign up to the text service we offer to stay abreast of the latest information and tops. What are your ambitions for the event now? To make next year’s 10th anniversary festival in 2015 the very best festival we’ve ever done. Even more special than this year’s will be. My gran MCs for an electro-clash jazz-bop outfit, is there any chance of getting her band a gig? Anyone can apply to the festival for consideration. We have an open commission process through our website which will open later in the year. Sadly though, with only two weeks to go, we won’t be able to welcome her to this year’s event. Hopefully for 2015 though!

Pride Brighton and Hove, one of the biggest and best LGBT events, returns again this year. The festival sees fundraising events spanning two weeks this summer. Starting on Fri 18 Jul and ending with the iconic Pride Weekend on Fri 1 – Sun 3 Aug, the centrepiece of which is the Pride March through Brighton and the party in Preston Park on the Saturday. This increasingly popular event saw an incredible £43,000 raised for charities within the local LGBT community last year. This year a record number of early bird tickets for the Preston Park event have already been sold. There is a wide selection of events and activities taking place during Pride’s two weeks this year, including the return of the Brighton Pride Arts & Film Festival. The ever popular Doggy Pride also returns, at Hove Rugby Club on Sun 20 July. In 2013 over 20 events were held, contributing towards the record sum of money raised. The theme of this year’s festivities is ‘Freedom To Live’. The aim is to expose and rectify a situation which means it is illegal to be a homosexual in 78 countries throughout the world. The Pride Community Parade will be marching through the packed streets, with 78 placards to represent these countries, in hope of raising awareness to this shocking issue. The colourful, vibrant Brighton Pride Festival and Parade nears the theme ‘The World’s A Disco’, celebrating music, dance and other culture from all over the world. The parade starts at 12pm, with the

Park event ending at 10pm. The big headliners for the day will be announced in the coming months. The fabulous acts drawing the crowds included include Paloma Faith, MS Dynamite and Freemasons. This year a new event has been set up. The 5k Pride Rainbow Run takes place on Sun27 Jul at Preston Park. Entrants will be running, jumping and dancing in a variety of Disco inspired outfits. Expect bright Lycra, flares and massive wigs. Paul Kemp, Brighton Pride managing director, said: ”2013 was a defining year for Pride as a celebration of diversity and a return to Pride’s campaigning roots. In 2014 we want to have a Pride with purpose and widen the focus to highlight countries all over the world where people are denied by their Freedom to live.” For tickets for the events and activities, or for more information on how to get involved in Pride, visit: www.brighton-pride.org

FESTIVAL GUIDE

FESTIVAL GUIDE BY LAURYN EMBLETON

GLASTONBURY

THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY

25 - 29 June

24 - 27 July

The festival of all festivals: Glastonbury at Pilton Farm. No other has come before, no other has come near after. The mile and a half wide festival that puts the actual town of Glastonbury cowering in its shadow will take place between the 25 and the 29 July. Confirmed acts so far? Dolly Parton. Arcade Fire. Blondie. So far that’s the big guns looking good. Throw in acts like James Blake, MIA and Chance the Rapper, and it appears that they have yet again hit the nail with the best of todays and yesterday cult musicians. So if you’ve been lucky enough to get a ticket, congratulations. For the rest of us, there is second batch on offer at the end of this month. If not, there’s always Latitude.

Even Latitude a bit too commercial for you? Secret Garden Party festival is a non-branded, non-commercial three day escape for the edgier, more unconventional of us. Described as the festival that brings out the artist in all of us, the music at Secret Garden Party doesn’t necessarily come first. However, there are some brilliant musical highlights that include David Rodigan, Little Dragon and Martha Reeves & Vandellas. It’s time to bin the timetables and maps, this year’s Secret Garden Party has been themed with ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’. This tranquil festival will take you far away from all of modern life’s pains, and encourages you to explore further and fully submerse yourself in what they have on offer in their mystical wonderland. (Above image © Seb Barros)

LATITUDE 17 -20 July Set deep in the Suffolk countryside, Glastonbury’s little sister Latitude is in its ninth year and as always, the theatre, comedy and arts lineup are just as spectacular as the music. This family friendly, flower-power festival will be offering some of the best talent from across the world for you to feast upon, without being poked in the eye every two minutes. Headline acts include Two Door Cinema Club, The Black Keys, (surprisingly making Latitude both band’s first UK headline slots) alongside Blur’s Damon Albarn. The BBC Radio 6 Music Stage and The Lake Stage, curated by Huw Williams, is also looking strong, with names such as Lykke Li and Bondax. Giggles provided by a number of comedy figureheads such as Dara O’Brien, Simon Amstell, Al Murray and Milton Jones.

LOVEBOX 18 - 19 July If you can’t hack all the camping and countryside that comes with most festivals, there’s always Lovebox. Set in Victoria Park over two days, Lovebox neatly compacts all the festival best bits in a tidy, urban adaption. The festival has now matured from an inner-city dance festival to one of the best exhibits of genre blurring acts, with queen of rap MIA headlining the bill. Also jam packed into the two day event are Chase and Status live, Nas, A$AP Rocky, Bonobo live and Katy B. BY LAURYN EMBLETON

NEW TO CINEMA The Wind Rises – 9 May The Wind Rises is a touching fictionalized account of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed aircraft for Japan during World War II. This film may be the last from Studio Ghibli co-founder, writer and director Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) and has already received critical acclaim from the critics and was the highest-grossing film in Japan last year. The Wind Rises comes to our screens this May and is loosely based on a short story by Japanese writer Tatsuo Hori. Whether you are new to Studio Ghibli or a die-hard fan, this is not to be missed.

Godzilla – 16 May Director Gareth Edwards, who brought us the effectively scary low budget movie ‘Monsters’ in 2010, is back with a much bigger threat to civilisation: the infamous Godzilla. Having hit the big screen for the first time in Ishiro Honda’s 1954 ‘Godzilla’, this super size creature has gone through many a transformation over the years in games, comic books, TV series and a rather dodgy film reimagining starring Matthew Broderick. This May, Edwards brings Godzilla into modern day with an impressive looking reboot that looks to stay faithful to its Japanese origin.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – 22 May With The Amazing Spiderman and Captain America sequels filling cinema seats with eager superhero fans over the last couple of months, you’d think Hollywood would be taking a break from all the excitement. Well, you thought wrong. Taking on the brand new exciting installment in the X-Men franchise is former X-Men commander-in-chief, director Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2). This time, the X-Men decide to send Wolverine back to the past in an attempt to change previous history and stop an event from happening that could mean the end for both humans and mutants in the future; hence the confusing title.

Maleficent – 30 May Remember the mean old party pooper that made Sleeping Beauty prick her finger on a spindle and fall into a 100 year slumber, all because she didn’t get invited to the christening? Well Disney’s Maleficent is the untold story about what drove this hard-hearted villain to become such a massive grumpy pants. Angelina Jolie looks wickedly beautiful as the devilish Maleficent, as the events of her past unravel to reveal the true feelings behind her acts of pure spite. This film is a live action re-telling of Disney’s animated 1958 film ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and is out at the end of this month.

THE SPACE EIGHT YEARS OF ENTHRALLING EVENTS BY WAYNE IMMS

As I begin to write this piece, it’s the day of April’s Space event, which I’m looking forward to. April’s guests were film effects artist May Leung (The Dark Knight Rises, Captain America: The First Avenger, Inception, Sin City) and Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis. I founded The Space (Southern Performance and Creative Energies), Brighton’s regular and unique film and arts event, in 2006. Each event has two guests from the arts and entertainment industries, usually at least one film-related, interviewed about their work and achievements. These events are currently held at Emporium, May seeing The Space reaching its eighth anniversary. Since The Space began, we’ve had thirty film-related guests, such as leading producers, top directors and veteran editors, although it does seem like more to me. A personal highlight was director Alan Parker, responsible for memorable and powerful films such as Mississippi Burning, Midnight Express and The Commitments. He was highly insightful and rather funny, and it was quite a joy to watch him interviewed. If you’re yet to see any of his output, I urge you to do so. David Arnold was another highlight. The composer of Independence Day, Sherlock and James Bond films’ soundtracks (since 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies) made his second appearance alongside composer Anne Dudley (The Crying Game, The Full Monty, American History X) at our Duke of York’s-based A Movie Music Master Class event four years ago. That was one of my favourite Space events, partly because it was a proper, rather slick, production with a selection of film clips and live examples of their work, performed on piano, with amusing and fascinating anecdotes from their respective careers. Terry Rawlings began working in film since the early sixties as a sound editor, before editing visuals, from 1979’s popular animation Watership Down to 2004’s big screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. His credits also include Alien and Blade Runner. Since his first of four Space appearances, now five years ago, Terry has become a good friend. On a few occasions, I’ve had the great pleasure of visiting him at his home near the legendary Elstree Studios. Each time, after a filling lunch

cooked by his lovely wife, we’d retreat to his mini cinema, a treasure trove of Blu-rays, DVDs, laser-discs and video tapes, as well as a huge soundtrack and classical music collection. There, he would screen extracts and full films from his extensive credits. A definite highlight of The Space is having gained my friendship with Terry. July’s guests include Jany Temime, a costume designer. Her impressive credits over the past ten years include Gravity, Skyfall, six Harry Potter films and In Bruge, one of my favourite films. The previous costume designer we had, a while after John Mollo (Star Wars, Alien, Gandhi) was Deborah Nadoolman Landis. Married to the director John Landis, she’s worked on almost all of his films, such as An American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America and Trading Places. She also designed the costumes for the brilliant Raiders of the Lost Ark, including, of course, the iconic Indiana Jones outfit. She was an excellent guest; very inspiring with some great anecdotes. For me, that event was particularly special, as her husband turned up too. I was so chuffed to meet him. As a cinema-going child, many years ago, I would be delighted at seeing films on the big screen and would often ask my dad: “How did they do that?” Behind the scenes, from special effects to the storytelling process, has always interested me. That’s a reason why I usually enjoy documentaries on the making of my favourite films. Therefore, it has been quite an honour to have had so many accomplished and high profile guests at The Space events from the world of film. For further info on The Space, including the next event, check out www.thespace.uk.com The photo is of me with director John Landis

BLUEBIRD TEA CO.

Tea lovers of the world unite! Mixologists Krisi Smith and Mike Turner have flown into the North Laine with their superbly unique blends of loose leaf tea and set up shop with the Bluebird Tea Co on Gardner St. After a year of trading in Brighton at markets, various festivals and also online, it seems apt that three weeks ago they were able to commemorate this anniversary by opening their very first store here in the city.

They also make the option of using loose leaf tea much more accessible with some carefully selected accessories. On their shelves amongst the state-of-the-art brewing mugs, teapots and flask sits an ingenious product called the KLIP tea brewer. With an ability to exist thanks to a kickstarter campaign, this small clip-on infuser from the States is exclusive to Bluebird Tea Co and opens up a whole world of loose-leaf possibilities for at home or at work.

Krisi has worked with tea for a long time including learning about blends whilst living out in Canada and wanted to develop a concept that the tea-loving population could get excited about. We often take the humble cuppa for granted but what Bluebird does is remind you that you shouldn’t have to compromise on taste or flavour.

When you visit Mike and Krisi at their brand new Bluebird Tea Co shop in the near future, you will be as delighted as I was by their knowledge and passion for their product. As well as selling you any amount of whatever tea you desire (feel free to bring your own tea tins if you enjoy a cheeky discount), there is a wide range of hot teas, tasty tea lattes, iced teas and matcha drinks to takeaway.

Each blend they create is exclusive to Bluebird and made right there on the premises. From a traditional ‘builders’ to their best selling ‘Strawberry Lemonade’ fruit tea, there is guaranteed satisfaction for tea enthusiasts whose happiness is met through delicious simplicity or those who enjoy a chance to experiment.

As if this wasn’t enough, there are various ways to show your loyalty to tea including a monthly tea subscription for £9.95 and a tea-tasting and blending workshops on the last Friday of every month. For £25, you get to taste unlimited hot teas, iced teas and even alcoholic tea cocktails! You will learn how to blend, name your very own tea and take some home with you. CURRY LEAF CAFE BY BEE ADAMIC The team at BN1 magazine are keen curry enthusiasts, so when we heard a brand new place had opened in the heart of The Lanes we literally waited with bated breath for the doors to burst open. When they eventually did on Fri 4 April we did a silly dance of best Bhangra moves all the way there. Curry Leaf Cafe offers a completely new style of Indian dining experience. As well as delivering authentic South Indian street food and fragrant, expertly spiced curries. This relaxed, friendly dining space also serves up coffees, organic loose-leaf teas and a wide range of affordable craft beers and wines from its newly opened premises on Ship Street, just a stone throw from the seafront. Perhaps the cafe wouldn’t be here today, if it wasn’t for an unfortunate personal incident which led the brainchild and former food critic and car journalist Euan Sey to meet chef Kanthi Kiran Thamma. Thamma’s pedigree includes cheffing roles at Brighton‘s award-winning Indian restaurant The Chilli Pickle and as Food Champion at Jamie Oliver’s Recipease. “I’d just split up with my girlfriend and decided to rent out my spare room, Kanthi moved in and started making me homemade South Indian dishes... stuff I’d never tried before, and it was like a light-bulb went off”. Curry Leaf Cafe is a cafe, not a restaurant and has the price list to match. Painted in warm sabar orange and lime green, it makes no compromises when it comes to quality. Like the spices used to create its vibrant, colourful South Indian dishes, its loose-leaf teas are organic and come directly from small farms in Kerala and Hyderabad, where Head Chef Kanthi Thamma grew up. All other ingredients are organic, free-range or locally sourced where possible, and around half the menu is vegetarian. A wide selection of vegan, gluten and dairy-free dishes are also offered throughout the day. Serving everything from a traditional South Indian brunch to a full four course meal, we were invited to kick off our street food

extravaganza with Punjaab’s answer to ‘fish and chips’. The dish was deliciously light, down to its gram floured succulent fish, together with the masala spiced hand cut potato wedges. The serving of mini poppadums literally blew us away, served with a unique array of homemade dips that include peanut and tamarind, mint chutney and fiery ginger yoghurt. Choosing which ale to accompany the dishes with was a real task in itself, with so many to choose from. Sey kindly talked us through them, recommending the Chimay Peres Trappistes Blue with its notes of caramel that was so wonderfully light and flowery. We also chose the classic Meantime Pilsner on tap, which was refreshing and tasty. Mains consisted of a Meat Thali and a Masala Dosa, which were to die for... tender chunks of lamb bathed in a traditional sauce, the Palak Daahl was fragrant and perfectly cooked, with lots of little side dishes and a naan to mop things up… you even get a free mango lassi with it. The Dosa was bursting with flavour and was fresh and authentic. Every single dish within the Thali had its own unique flavour. Much more than a place to eat, Curry Leaf Cafe aims to build a new community of people interested in Indian culture, sustainable dining and the sociable pleasures of the street food experience. Monthly events will be held to coincide with major Indian festivals such as Holi and Diwali, and every month the team will be hosting pop-up kitchens at venues such as The Craft Beer Company and Jamie Oliver’s Cafe and Cookery School on Western Road. If you’re looking for traditional South Indian street food, without having to sit on a plane for 14 hours, then this is the one for you! This duo has thought of it all and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Curry Leaf Cafes popping up all over the UK. We urge you to get yourself down there, pronto.

HARE & HOUNDS If, like me, you venture as far as the shop at the end of the road for a naff vacuum-packed sandwich and a cheeky pint at the local, you may be missing the noticeable transformation happening along London Road (Preston Circus to St Peters Church). For the past 15 years or so, London Road and The Level area has been described as a rather drab and dilapidated place, overrun with betting shops, tat lands and derelict buildings. Now there’s a change in the wind. A regeneration project is underway with some rather exciting businesses either opening or taking on a refurbishment from the Portas Pilot scheme. The Hare and Hounds is no exception. Having just opened its doors at the beginning of April after a purchase by Indigo Pub Company, they’ve really stamped their mark on London Road. Bringing Craft Beers, Local Ales and La Choza - Mexican Street food to the revitalised Hare and Hounds, visitors will see a notable change. As you enter there’s a lovely, shiny MeanTime brewery tank on your left, the latest thing to hit the bars this year. This keeps the beer unfiltered and unpasteurised, allowing it to mature more at the venue giving you that fresh brewery taste. One for the connoisseurs! The surroundings are a lot more comfortable with booths at the back and the bar situated in the middle, making it feel like the set from Cheers. There’s a large patio area with decked seating and graffiti art out the back, great for summer lounging! You’ll notice La Choza branding subtly mixed in with the pub décor, the much loved and popular Mexican street food restaurant. Mexican street food is all the rage at the moment, so is this a good tact from the Hare and Hounds team? We tucked in to some food to find out.

75 London Road Brighton, BN1 4JF www.hareandhoundsbrighton.com

My dining companion and I started with some Hot Shots (£5.00) - Jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese, coated in breadcrumbs served with chipotle sour cream. These oozed a rich and creamy flavour that was not too overpowering and definitely left us wanting more. We also picked the Mexican Street Food Salad (£5.00), offering shredded red and white cabbage, radishes, red onion, carrots, coriander, green chilli and lime, which was ever so light and refreshing and surprisingly filling for a salad. Now it was time for the mains. First up we tried the Tostadas (6.50 - £7.00) - Three crispy corn tacos topped with refried beans and shredded lettuce; one with pulled pork, another with slow cooked beef and the last with shredded chicken and chorizo. This is a great move if you can’t decide what to have and for meat lovers the fillings were very succulent and tasty, especially the chicken and chorizo combo! The only fault was the crispy corn tacos lacking the crisp, as they were a bit on the chewy side. If you like crying into your food, whilst steam vents out of your ears, then you should order some XXXtra hot Naga salsa as a side. I for one am too much of a wimp for such torture and prefered the Chipotle salsa at a medium heat and the Chipotle sour cream. Having stuffed ourselves already, we ploughed on and went for the Burrito (6.50 - £7.00) - flour tortilla with refried beans, green rice, cheese, sour cream and pit-smoked pulled pork, which I have to say - nailed it! This was my favourite, packed full of juicy flavour with a medium heat, this was definitely Mexican street food at its finest. The Hare and Hounds is now a fun, trendy place to go with friends, with the added benefit of good food and surroundings. You’re now spoilt for choice down that end of London Road. My advice… venture that way as much as you can!
