BLACK PEAKS Reaching the pinnacle

With their own culmination of heavy but progressive style, the Brighton-based boys of Black Peaks have managed to tap into a fairly exclusive market of widely popular rock. Formed in 2012, the band consists of four of the Brighton rock scene’s most talented musicians. Will Gardner stands strong on vocals with Joe Gosney and Andrew Gosden flanking him on the strings with incomparable guitar riffs and heavy bass lines respectively, while drummer Liam Kearley binds the tracks together with his quick, complex beats. Bursting into the limelight and building a hell of a reputation for themselves as ‘Shrine’, the band recently changed their name to ‘Black Peaks’ due to mix-ups with other groups. The individuality of their music is more deserving than that. ‘We did a few shows out in Spain and there was this newspaper article about us that had this picture of a band called ‘The Shrine’ – these guys with massive hair and flying V-guitars!’ Gosney says. This is a stark contrast to the Black Peaks’ somewhat modest appearances. The new name, established around Halloween-time of 2014, is derived from two things: their longing to play a set in Alaska – an icy bucket-list part of the world for all of the band members - and a love of big exploding things. ‘We ended up going through this list of volcanoes and Will (our singer) found Black Peak – we thought it was pretty cool, it’s this fuck-off

By Freya Hughes

big volcano.’ It seems fitting that the Alaskan volcano is of the strato-status as they’re characterised by the layering of ash and lava settling after each eruption: much like the success each track seems to be bringing the band. Pluralising it to make it their own, the grandeur of the name must help the band navigate through to the summit of the rock scene. ‘We’ll definitely play a show on top of it one day!’ Kearley promises. Their debut single ‘Glass Built Castles’ released 26 Jan, has taken iTunes and Spotify by storm. In its very early days, the track was pitched to Radio 1’s Zane Lowe who, to paraphrase, said he wanted to play it right away. This meant the band had just one week to get the track mastered, get a radio edit done and also shoot the video. Quite the seven days. It has paid off though as the video racked up an impressive 27,000 views in the first month of its upload. The band seems to take this immense pressure in their stride, however, focusing on the positive aspects of their gruelling schedule. ‘Going through Vevo was a good call – it broadens the spectrum of people who you wouldn’t expect to hear it. You get good and bad from that, obviously, but the response has been mainly positive!’ Having a bloody high profile fan such as Lowe, Black Peaks have had some incredible coverage and praise. ‘He’s done so much for us and we owe a lot to him for that – it’s amazing.’

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 15 ]

“We’ll ay defi nitely pl p a show on to !” of it one day Kearley explains. Telling the world that if the band has got this far without funding and to imagine what the future will hold with a bit of financial backing, Lowe touched the hearts of the band. ‘I liked that he highlighted the fact that somebody should give us money,’ Gosney jokes. With the release date still to be confirmed, Black Peaks’ debut album is still very much a mystery to all but the band’s nearest and dearest. Recorded in just two weeks, the band locked themselves away in Devon to get it nailed. With ‘no phone signal, no nothing, just in the middle of nowhere,’ the album became perfect without the influence of any modern needs. ‘Its funny, some nights it would get to two or three in the morning and we were still playing. We’d be playing for like 12 hours… You get to the point of thinking “what are we doing here?”’ Gosney recalls. The band is adamant that they will not just have 15 minutes of fame. ‘We are more of a longevity band so we want it to last, we don’t want to just be like “yeah!” and then just disappear. We actually want to produce something like bands that we grew up listening to, like Mastodon. They took ten years before they got really big. We’re not intending on becoming the next big fucking band right away. We want to grow.’ And grow we’re sure they will – the steady climb up to the radars of the music world giants is evident, listening to early Shrine tracks and the intricate tracks hitting the sound waves this year. While touring with their friends and heroes, Arcane Roots, the Black Peaks boys are excited for what else 2015 has in store. ‘Their crowd is awesome so the show is perfect for us and we get on with them really well. It’ll be amazing, we can’t wait. It’s going to be fun – big venues!’ And as for festivals? This spring and summer see Black Peaks playing a variety of impressive niche and mainstream festivals including Reading & Leeds 2015. They are also confirmed for Live at Leeds, The Great Escape (both this month), ArcTanGent in August and many more to be announced. www.facebook.com/blackpeaks @blackpeaksband [Image by © Russ Cox]

Mew are a four piece Danish band that make beautiful, symphonic and catchy music. We like them because of their similarities to Radiohead, Mercury Rev and Phoenix. With an ability to bring out their introspection within a layer of synths and delicate vocals, you’re soon lulled into a reverie by their brilliance. Their 2015 UK tour takes them to some awesome venues, so we’re glad to have them head down to Brighton. Expect wonder and new songs as their sixth album dropped on 27 Apr. 2015 sees London blues-inspired folk duo Whilk & Misky return to The Great Escape for a second year, this time with acclaimed EP ‘The First Sip’ and some new material under their belt. While last year’s festival goers may remember their reworks of both Chris Malinchak’s ‘So Good To Me’ and James Brown’s ‘Man’s World’, their own material shouldn’t be ignored. ‘Clap Your Hands’ immediately caught our attention with its bossa nova influences, and is sure to stand out against the backdrop of TGE. We’ve had it on repeat. (NM)

It’s rare for new musicians to boast a prominent social media presence, but it’s a task electronic solo artist Astronomyy appears to perform effortlessly, with witty Twitter/Insta accounts and over 3,000,000 streams of his playlist – ‘Lunar Jams’ - on Spotify. What would be great though, is if as many people paid attention to his music. Strippeddown R&B, chill-out and the self-described “surf/urban” are what you can expect from this Worcester-born artist. Listen out for ‘Nothin’ On My Mind’ and ‘Pack of Wolves’ in particular – we look forward to hearing more. (NM)

Spiegeltent Following a similar musical vein as the critically acclaimed Nouvelle Vague, Bristol is the brainchild of producer Marc Collin, paying homage to the trip-hop era of the early 90s. Collin has taken classics such as Portishead’s ‘Roads’, Neneh Cherry’s ‘Woman’ and Massive Attack’s ‘Safe From Harm’, and reimagined them as soundtracks from 60s cinema.

Patterns – downstairs If there’s one thing you should be doing at The Great Escape it’s discovering new music, and they don’t get much newer than London’s singer-songwriter The Beach.

Spiegeltent

What results are hauntingly beautiful covers with Collin’s signature French flair. Considering how well the juxtaposition of these genres worked before, it’d be a shame to miss out on this latest offering. (NM)

Influences of Eaves and Rae Morris can be heard in new single ‘Thieves’, which has already captured the hearts of many DJs across the country. The Beach, complete with powerful Hozier-esque vocals, is due to drop in to The Great Escape ahead of supporting Tom Odell on tour in June – we’re hoping for a performance of his stellar cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Holocene’. (NM)

Island Records signed artist JP Cooper will be performing this year. Influenced by a range of genres including soul, R&B, folk and gospel, JP creatively blends a mix of sounds into his music, whilst angelically singing over instrumentals. The Manchester born and raised artist has performed at several shows across the UK, at well-known venues such as Scala, The Tabernacle, and Gorilla. Having collaborated with artists such as Nick Brewer, Jake Isaac and George The Poet as well as gaining over 100 thousand sales on his latest downloadable EP, JP Cooper proves to be one to look out for! BLACK HONEY 14 May 9:15pm - 9:45pm

Green Door Store

Green Door Store Brighton grunge-rockers Black Honey have been shrouded in mystery since releasing their first tracks online, and are proving to be an unstoppable force in the 90s grunge revival. Fans of Wolf Alice and Yuck will enjoy their bittersweet melodies and dark lyrics punctuated with ethereal moments and psychedelic choruses. Having recently played a secret show in their hometown and supporting Britpop revivalists Superfood on their UK tour, there’s quite a buzz around them making you a fool to miss their set. If you’re still unsure then listen to the angst-driven but addictive ‘Bloodlust’. (AH)

A mixture of folk, indie, rock and anything you can think of; Cairo has it all in one. However instead of it being here, there and everywhere, they manage to make it laid back and straightforward. Hailing from Toronto, the four-piece band combines the gentle sounds of strings and a piano with a solid drumbeat. They draw their influence from the likes of Bon Iver and Jeff Buckley but they create music that stands out from the rest. Their lively music and jive-like songs will definitely provide a perfect time to dance and have a great time. With their latest album ‘A History of Reasons’ just released, the quartet will definitely have a lot of new tunes to wow crowds during their set. (SV) www.earecairo.com

LOYLE CARNER

GENGAHR

Even though Fickle Friends have said they want to stay away from major record labels for as long as possible, if you live in Brighton and haven’t come across this infectious pop quintet yet, you need to. Fickle Friends currently have four singles on iTunes, which all have a perfect laid back vibe for any summer car rides into the sunset (or for swaying in a crowd hypnotically which is exactly what we did when they played at The Haunt last month). Check out ‘Swim’, and get ready to float your troubles away. (RB)

The Haunt

If you’re interested in hip-hop then make sure you check out 20-year-old Loyle Carner. The South London MC turned heads with the release of his debut EP ‘A Little Late’ back in late 2014, as well as impressing crowds with his performances touring alongside US hip-hop outfit Atmosphere and US rapper Joey Bada$$. More recently he’s created a stir touring and collaborating with Kate Tempest, and their upbeat, in your face track ‘Guts’ made its way straight onto Radio 6 Music’s A-list. Expect some agreeable groovy beats with heavy jazz and soul influences; thoughtful well put together lyrics, and a charismatic performance to match. (NH)

Local indie quartet High Tyde are setting their ambitions sky-high this year. After their debut EP ‘FUZZ’ in March lead them to be handpicked by Peace for support on their Brighton dates at The Haunt, they superseded all expectations on the night. Commandeering the crowd to jump on demand, they proved they have the catchy riffs and charismatic vocals from an energetic frontman to grace the line up of The Great Escape. If you’re a fan of the aforementioned Peace, head down the front for glamorous yet modern indie rock and roll. (HB)

Experiencing Gengahr live is a truly, truly memorable experience. Their refusal to conform to generic and bland chart-topping rock music means the buzz surrounding them has been increasing ever since they formed just some 18 months ago. Guitarist John Victor has the most invigoratingly fresh approach to guitar playing, that is only matched by the lead vocals and harmonies lushly spread across the breadths of their silky-smooth choruses. Debut single ‘Powder’ produced guitar work Graham Coxon would be proud of, and must make Royal Blood start to reconsider adding a third member. Gengahr’s first album out this June. (HB)

Hollie McNish Speak no evil

Whilst many record their daily thoughts and adventures in a plain written diary, Hollie McNish filled her journals exclusively with poems. Even from the age of seven she was obsessed by couplets and word-play, gorging herself on the writings of Roger McGough and Allan Ahlberg. Years on and she’s moved from fantasising about the Loch Ness monster, now focusing on examinations of hope, fear and desire. Some endearing elements from her early writing still remain however. “I know it sounds a bit anal, but I always put my age, the date and time on every poem I’ve written,” McNish laughs. She’s humble and rather sweet, suggesting her current material isn’t too different from that of her childhood’s, at least in its rhyming scheme. It’s an odd but charming confession from such an acclaimed writer. Summarising her thoughts on the world, McNish’s poems range from examining the minute of family life, to issues like feminism and xenophobia. This bright mind quickly found herself an appreciative audience, with tales of politics, motherhood, sexuality and the importance of being nice. “I never wanted to share them. I still sometimes feel I don’t, but I am enjoying it more.” If the reticence is down to the embarrassment she causes her family with regular references to sex, or the nervousness of being in front of an audience, it is unclear. She’s never done any other form of performing. Even at school she avoided the school play, preferring books, and socialising. ”There you are. That’s my life – books and parties!”

By Stuart Rolt

Her perception of poetry has changed immeasurably since she began performing in her early 20s. Especially now she can witness the work of so many other great performers. “It’s fascinating seeing what some people do with their language, words and bodies. I just love it.” She giggles as she recounts her experiences representing Team GB at a recent European poetry slam. Her tendency to avoid the metaphorical and head straight for the literal offered opportunity for peers to mock her for being the ‘practical poet’ - “They were saying Holly only writes poems you can fix a door with!” Good natured ribbing aside, she won’t shy away from the complex, more than able to communicate big issues in a simple manner. Her rhythmic use of accessible language, unpretentious demeanour and informed viewpoint has made her one of the leading lights of the spoken word scene. Modern poetry is another art form benefiting enormously from the YouTube revolution. Previously it was confined to books or the once introverted slam scene. Now performances can be uploaded to the internet, enabling the casual observer to immerse themselves in a world of word-play from the comfort of their own sofa. The prose of Keats, Wordsworth and Byron remains immortal, but we only have modern interpretations of how their poems should be recited. Performances from our contemporary writers should exist for as long as the media recording them, adding a new dimension to the work. Enlivened through technology, poetry is reaching a wider audience. “At school I was

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 19 ]

taught it was to be read, not be performed. But loads of those classic poets travelled around performing to people…” Hollie’s most popular online poem ‘Mathematics’ accrued over 1.7million views, ably demonstrating how the medium and art-form can work together. Pointing out the flaws in immigration, it adds a calming view to the nation’s hot topic. “It’s not a big deal. But, whenever they do a poll, it says people are worried about immigration. Of course they are, every time they open a paper it’s telling them to be worried about immigration!” The web might be a technological marvel, but all too often it’s a place where ignorance and anger can mutate into insults and intimidation. Inevitably, as her work reaches more people, she is finding a growing number of people finding her views contentious. But with a MA in Development Studies and Economics, she has more than a passing knowledge in matters like human rights, trade and migration. She’s still been called every name under the sun and been accused of hating white people. The poems always come from the heart though, not from a desire to play the agitator. “Sometimes I get shocked when people say things are controversial… especially things about motherhood.” The severity of some responses has seen her refrain from using her full name on the Internet, one individual even threatened to attack her at a show. But rather than running scared, she makes an effort to engage with her detractors, asking for reference points from them so she can at least understand what prompts an opposing opinion. These comment sections can often throw up some oddities, aside from the hatred. “I’ve got a poem about Transformers and pregnancy. The comments on that, I love them more than the others. Half of them were from mothers and rest from Transformers fans, all disagreeing with each other.” Away from the bearbaiting sideshow of the information superhighway there’s a lot more adoration, but she admits there are not many right-wing reactionaries attending your average poetry evening.

BIMM

British & Irish Modern Music Institute.

Stop, collaborate and listen

Now in its tenth year, The Great Escape has become the UK’s go-to festival for new music, bringing thousands of fans to Brighton every year for exposure to the hottest-tipped bands. The city-wide event boasts an impressive concert schedule, but tucked alongside the performance roster is a quieter, but fast-growing, strand – music education.

BIMM. With the UK as our lead international focus for 2015, it makes perfect sense for us to work more closely with BIMM, an institution renowned for educating smart, hungry students and integrating them into the music business. Our collaboration will ensure there is an influx of driven young people into the thriving music industry.”

After the success of last year’s BIMM ‘Student Sessions’ at The Great Escape, the local music institution was approached to become the festival’s official education partner. “BIMM and The Great Escape share a common goal — to promote opportunities in music, encourage entrepreneurship and to motivate young people to think big and connect to the music industry,” said BIMM Principal Vaseema Hamilton. “This is an important partnership for us and we’re delighted to become the Lead Educational Partner on the festival’s 10th anniversary.”

Last year’s Student Sessions highlight was an interview with industry giant, Seymour Stein (aka, the man who signed Madonna). This year the sessions give attendees the chance to have questions answered by a top industry panel, including Jeff Smith, the Head of Music at BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music; James Endeacott of 1965 Records (home of The View and Toddla T); Bryan Johnson of Spotify Artist Services; and Mark Bennett, live music agent from The Agency Group.

It’s a sound move for an event attracting hundreds of music industry newcomers, as BIMM specialise in putting their undergraduates at the heart of the industry, with work placements, famous visiting speakers, and practical classes in everything from performance to management to media. Creating an invaluable and direct link between music industry professionals and the talented, proactive students of BIMM is tremendously important, as Kat Morris, Director of The Great Escape points out: “We are thrilled to announce a partnership between The Great Escape and

Playing host at the BIMM Student Sessions will be music author and industry lawyer, Ann Harrison, and experienced music executive Ian Ramage. The Sessions promise to be a great inauguration for BIMM’s new role as education partner at The Great Escape, and a great resource for the city’s budding musicians. “We are thrilled to have been chosen to play at TGE,” said Alternative Pop duo, Indigo Face. “We can’t wait to be on that stage. We’re working on a new tune for the occasion!”

2015 is a very special year. Not only does it mark ten years of The Great Escape festival coming to the city, but Brighton music venue Bleach will also be celebrating its first birthday as one of the most prominent places for upcoming local bands to play. Just last month, local folk big dog Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) headlined here to promote ‘Whispers II’ to raise money for UNICEF.

On Thu 14 May, it will be home to Strong Island Recordings and Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl as they host a stunning all-day showcase totally free to those with TGE wristbands. Some of the acts include Theo Verney, Winchester’s Wild Smiles and Man Made. Echochamp, hosted by The Magic Gang and Abattoir Blues, will take over on the Friday, ready for the main event on Sat 16 May.

Having been host to the likes of big Brighton names such as The Wytches, Black Honey and Black Peaks (formerly Shrine) in the past, manager and curator Tim Hampson has ambition for Bleach becoming a ‘rite of passage’ venue for future bands, local or otherwise, to play when they come to town - “we have a specific audience building. People trust the choices we make at Bleach.”

Brighton-born record label Cannibal Hymns and House Arrest present an incredible line-up to dominate the last day of The Great Escape’s Alternative sibling, with free entry to all. As well as emerging talent such as Menace Beach, Brightonbased Animal House and Our Girl, Bleach are hailing some very special guests who certainly aren’t strangers to The Great Escape main festival bill this year.

It will come as no surprise that to mark a year of progress at this thriving music space, they have acquired a plethora of top quality acts to play during the weekend of The Great Escape, including some very special guests to welcome music fans to experience some of the best new bands in the UK. Situated above the Hare & Hounds pub at Preston Circus on London Road, Bleach will be awash with a variety of events throughout the three days for their Alternative Escape shows. This is expected to be hugely popular as their last year’s Great Escape show was selected in NME and Amazing Radio as their pick of the festival for the Saturday.

Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for announcements as they happen across Bleach’s social media in the days leading up to their action-packed anniversary.

The Haunt

The archetypal rockers head down for some sea air. Starting out with a solid trade in blues-infused space-boogie the band took in a youthful Michael Schenker, a move that triggered their journey to helping create the “New Wave of British Heavy Metal”.

Melting Vinyl bring this renegade musician and visual artist to Brighton Fringe. Using her multi-instrumentalism, voice, effects pedals and a mash of real and made-up languages, Bunty whispers, bellows, beat-boxes, claps and stamps to create her music from scratch.

The hardest working hip-hop group in the world come to show Brighton how it’s really done. With eight critically acclaimed fulllength albums and thousands of shows, this Los Angeles outfit’s impressive workload is only equalled by the quality of their output.

Over the next decade the band recorded some of the genre’s best works, consolidating their place as one of Britain’s greatest rock acts. Still touring and recording, with a lineup including the legendary Vinnie Moore, they’ve a legacy worth celebrating.

With a large portion of each show relying on improvisation and off-the-cuff inspiration, each one is utterly unique. Part awe-inspiring soundscape, part pop concert and part multidisciplinary arts event, this is one show you won’t forget.

Despite constantly evolving and pushing their sound, they still keep a timeless appeal. Last year’s album ‘12 Step Program’ heralded a new era of technical ability. Proudly swimming just out of the mainstream’s reach, Ms Gilmore is the definition of an independent woman. Blithely swapping styles and exploring ideas, her 14-album career has been unjustly spent in the shadows. From here she lashes out, poking eloquent sweet-sounding fun at the excessive, the obsessive and the indecisive.

Here come the originators of grunge rock. Let us not forget it was Nirvana that supported Mudhoney on their first UK tour. A quarter of a century on, the Sub-Pop house band show no sign of growing up or mellowing out. Evidently, if it still works, then it doesn’t need fixing.

Whilst the rest of the world might be enraptured with DJs making heart hands at their crowd to a vapid pre-recorded EDM soundtrack, The Prodigy are starting the fight back against this mundanity. It might not sound that pretty, but at least it’s really from the heart.

With brilliant bittersweet glimpses at modern life, a host of fervent showbiz fans and a voice like few others, it is a wonder she hasn’t encountered greater success. But life is never straightforward.

KWABS All is fair in Love + War

By taking a sound, examining what makes it special and placing his own epic-sounding spin on it, Kwabs is pushing his way to the forefront of British contemporary soul. Experimental electronica offers a stark contrast to his traditional vocal technique but held against most modern music, he sounds almost revolutionary. So many pop singers adopt falsettos, battling against compression and complex production on tracks. But he doesn’t make shallow pop records. The rich baritone is not the only deep element in this music. A love for the prodigious technical ability of singers like Sinatra, Mel Tormé and Ella Fitzgerald, saw him originally embrace all things jazz. Attending the Royal Academy of Music, the illustrious institution allowed him to learn his craft at the highest level and deepened his love for all music. Whilst his musical education was traditional, the varying musical tastes he was exposed to at college would affect him as much as lessons in theory or performance. Listening enthusiastically to whatever was available all his life, each new peer group would introduce new genres for him to immerse in. Soon the allure of artists like the legendary Stevie Wonder and near-incomparable Donnie Hathaway took hold. “I happened to be surrounded by people who loved all

By Stuart Rolt

sorts of music,” he tells me. “They were much older in their understanding and musical knowledge. There was so much I wouldn’t have been exposed to if I hadn’t been around those old heads.” Indie, soul, jazz, folk and modern gospel; after his progression through all these different styles, Kwabs has truly found himself musically, borrowing from each to create a sound which is uniquely his. After posting a number of spine-tingling covers on YouTube, including James Blake’s ‘The Wilhelm Scream’, he captured the imagination of Atlantic Records. Under their careful and considerate stewardship he’s prospered and developed as an artist. “They get what I do, and they let it breathe.” He’s certainly no mere crooner; this is a voice that’s meant to be heard. There are hints of pop, electronica, jazz and funk, but the soulful elements are where the real power lies. Delicate and exquisite electronic backgrounds bubble under all Kwabs’ tunes, fully exposing the reverberating majesty of his voice. Somehow, it just feels more ‘real’. His debut album is the next step in Kwabs’ journey. Released this month, ‘Love + War’ has been two and a half years in the making. Now the 100 or so songs - many composed during breaks at college - have been reduced to the 12 best,

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 27 ]

demonstrating where he stands in both head and heart. It expands upon an already impressive repertoire with a new, eclectic and instinctive edge coming through in his sound. “It’s going to be interesting for people to hear the full range of what I’m about. I feel they will get an idea of the deep and dark workings of my mind.” We get to talk at Brighton’s Komedia, a few hours before another night in his latest set of sell-out shows. He’s something of an open book, laughing with ease when something amuses him, his brow furrowing when he touches upon his darker life experiences. He oozes soul, potential and gratitude, the latter being a word he uses a lot. There is unmistakable sincerity in this thankfulness. These aren’t the empty statements of a media trained personality, he’s had a glimpse of how hard life can get. He admits, just like most of us, he’s not completely sorted in every aspect of what happens in his mind. This album details how he at least became comfortable with his full spectrum of emotions. Describing himself as ‘emotionally complex’, he is adamant his unusual background has given him a lot to think about. “Real artistry in general comes from people that have lived real lives. They need to have lived enough to have self-awareness and real emotions. It’s no coincidence some of our most beloved artists have been the most troubled.” Later that evening, his extraordinarily powerful voice draws an enraptured crowd. Everything I’d read or heard about him makes absolute sense. It’s a fair assumption Kwabs won’t be playing to venues of this size again. Similarly breath-taking performances at events like Glastonbury, The Great Escape and Secret Garden Party have ensured he’s viewed as an exciting live prospect. The growing adoration still takes some getting used to. “I’ve had to drop my basket a couple of times in Morrison’s to take a selfie with someone. In my naïve mind I hadn’t quite worked out that might happen. I’m ready for it now; it’s part of the job. When you meet someone who is inspired by what you do, it’s an amazing feeling.” The rest of the year is to be spent building and entertaining his crowds like this. Latitude, Somerset House, Reading & Leeds and around 40 other festival appearances through the summer, are already in his diary. There’s even phone calls from US radio DJs, insisting that he travels over the pond to begin his assault on the world’s biggest market. “The music will dictate what happens,” he muses, typically pragmatic about the future and where it will lead him. It seems making imaginative music, which connects with people, is enough for now. Kwabs’ debut album ‘Love + War’ is out on Mon 18 May, via Atlantic Records www.kwabsmusic.com

Patterns

NEW NIG

HT CLUB

Every night fever

Injecting a fresh burst of energy into one of Brighton’s most historic music venues, Thu 14 May sees the opening of Patterns. The building at 10 Marine Parade has been a staple of Brighton’s proud music scene for over three decades, where legendary artists such as Daft Punk, The Stone Roses, The Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold have all graced the premises. Whilst continuing to honour this rich musical heritage, the venue sees a new name, refreshed style, space and music policy, offering a hub for Brighton’s creative crowds and those partial to delectable food, great beers and even better music. With the venue’s deep ingrained musical tradition - from its beginnings as a jazz club, to Ted Potter’s Music Bar and on to the world famous Escape Club and Audio - the new owners are keen to keep Patterns as a hub of music, both vocally and physically. “While we are not looking to completely switch up from any of the venue’s past heritage, we are looking to give the programme more of a global, and perhaps grown-up feel with our musical direction,” Patterns programmer, Paul Gibson, said. The ethos of the revitalised venue is to take the best of what’s gone before and mix in new exciting elements from all areas of the music spectrum. In the first couple of months Patterns hosts Brighton debuts from acts such as Jeremy Underground, HNNY, Anthony Parasole and DVS1. Brightonbred SpectraSoul also visit to launch their new album and, in a nod to the Audio days, Deetron, Artwork, Ivan Smagghe and Optimo all return to check out the refurbishment.

With cutting edge light and sound production, and a creative design concept, it’s intended to be a space to enhance the experience of both daytime drinkers and weekend clubbers. “We want our customers to get more than a night out, so we’ll be developing a channel for information, video content, immersive experience and community interaction,” said Neil Ellis, the venue’s promotions and digital marketing manager. “For me the transition from Audio to Patterns has been nothing but exciting, the venue was in need of modernisation and a new forward thinking outlook and that’s what it is getting.” Remaining the ‘go-to’ place in Brighton to catch original music acts, Patterns will offer a 360° experience under the careful curation of the Mothership Group. Promising a friendly, vibrant atmosphere round the clock, the venue is now ideal for lazy weekend lunches on the southfacing terrace, mid-week gigs and after-work socialising in the bar, right through to late night revelry in the basement club. Introducing an impressive drinks menu that reflects the playful Patterns spirit: a selection of local craft beers, international draught favourites and an extensive range of spirits will be served across both floors. The menu also includes seasonallycurated menus including shrubs – a homemade fruit and spice based drink topped with alcohol and soda and the fiery Mexican ‘beertail’ Micheladas, served in giant steins. Patterns will also be teaming up with Brighton’s hottest street food outlet, Street Diner, to bring the tastiest of treats from all corners of the globe.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 31 ]

Stylistically, the redesign embraces the building’s original art-deco style elements, nostalgically highlighting original features within the former hotel and long-lived music venue. A twist of Bauhaus design will run throughout the venue’s trio of spaces, with an earthy tone of natural materials, red light, coloured glass and playful oversized convex mirrors. The interior reconstruction is mindful of its role as a music performance space, equipped to offer a superior listening experience; whether it’s acoustic live bands or uncompromising, underground DJ sets. After testing different sound systems in the downstairs space, local sound engineering company C3 Productions custom selected a range of L’Acoustics components to build Brighton’s finest club sound system. “Our intention is to make Patterns the best sounding venue in Brighton, and the UK,” Dan Spinney, Senior Music Programmer at Mothership, said. With live music in mind, a new Midas 32 channel desk and green room with shower facilities have also been fitted, making Patterns one of the city’s leading live music venues for touring bands. On the ground floor a hand-built DJ booth, designed by Bad Habits, will be powered by a bespoke OHM PA system. Staying true to its roots, the infamous basement area will remain a headsdown, hedonistic club space with huge investment made in a world-class sound system for a fully immersive party experience. Patterns will bring globally acclaimed DJs, promoters and live talent to the historic venue, as well as a carefully selected family of resident DJs. Events will focus on engaging and creative artist-led content, really maximising on digital exposure and innovative branding. Patterns opens on Thu 14 May, at 10 Marine Parade, Brighton. www.patternsbrighton.com

The Forgotten Flight of fancy

By Stuart Rolt

Taking a physical and metaphorical journey into the depths of the unconscious, The Forgotten seeks to heal wounds of the soul. Acclaimed for its inventive visual style, the show is at the cutting edge of contemporary French circus. Raphaëlle Boitel and her company fuse circus, theatre and dance in equal measures to stunning effect. “Because it’s my first big show, it’s my most important,” she tells me. “I’ve been putting everything I’ve got into it.” One of the most remarkable performers on the European visual and physical theatre scene, The Forgotten marks the Paris-based Boitel’s directorial debut. The Brighton Festival run sees the UK premiere of this introspective and fantastical piece. With incredible physical ability, six performers fly, glide, dive and subvert everyday objects in an enchanted theatrical landscape. This parallel and ethereal world echoes ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as it descends deeper into the strange and magical. But beneath the splendour lies a dark edge of loss and grief. The concept for the show originated around a decade ago, Boitel wanting to use her personal experience of grief to produce an optimistic work about bereavement. “Everybody knows this situation. I wanted it to be universal.” Preparations for the production truly started five years ago, albeit with interruptions from other projects, with a solid 15 weeks of rehearsals running to opening night. This visual and physical fairy-tale depicts a woman coping with grief after the loss of a lover. We then move into a dreamlike exploration of her past lives, the illusion of her facilitated by Boitel’s sister and mother. Fusing elements of dance, theatre and circus, The Forgotten is an epic story of yearning and discovery.

The show’s visual aesthetic was enormously inspired by the work of filmmakers David Lynch, Terry Gilliam and Michel Gondry. Like these directorial visionaries, Boitel has painstakingly designed an environment which tells as much of the story as its six performers. Even the strong contrasts in the work’s lighting are intentionally employed to evoke and enhance the audience’s emotional responses. “My work is quite dreamlike. There’s a certain aesthetic. I wanted to do a show where you could feel the intimacy and magic.” Raphaëlle Boitel comes from a proud tradition of extratheatrical circus. It seems the French have an inherent ability to produce physical performances with dark themes in a bright and inspiring manner. “Circus is very popular here. But as with everywhere there is less money around, so it’s becoming a little difficult. You just have to be ingenious.” Now her first full show asks sweet and profound questions about life, love and mourning. It seemingly distorts time and replicates the fragile intricacies of relationships. Mankind’s uneasy connection with grief is at the core of its narrative, making it a work everyone can relate to. After touring France to enormous critical acclaim, Brighton hosts the beginning of a major international tour. Wonderfully happy with the reception The Forgotten has received already, like most artists Boitel has still trouble accepting her creation as the finished article. “You always want to do better and go further. I am proud to be with my family, and that the audience love it. But you never want to stop evolving it, just like life.” The Forgotten comes to Brighton Dome, on Tue 19 - Wed 20 May, as part of Brighton Festival. www.brightonfestival.org

John Osborne If you’re happy, and you know it…

Does the label ‘geeky’ remain an insult? You’d hope the word’s pejorative nature is slowly evaporating, as we increasingly feel a need to catalogue and understand the world around us. The quest for true knowledge may be eclipsed by celebrity culture, but collecting and embracing the esoteric is increasingly celebrated. For all his obsessive documenting of British eccentricities and human nature, writer John Osborne wouldn’t label himself as a geek. “I think my work appeals to geeky people,” he tells me. “But it is an interesting word, which has evolved over the years.” Since bursting onto the spoken word scene with his show and Radio 4 programme ‘John Peel’s Shed’, Osborne has studiously looked below the surface of the everyday. In 2002 he won a box of old vinyl direct from the legendary DJ’s shed. The musical haul ranged from a Boyzone punk covers band to Atom And His Package’s ‘Pumping Iron for Enya’. It was certainly an eclectic assortment of recordings. “It didn’t feel right they were in a box, only coming out when people visited.” This led to his exploration of the strange and funny tales behind the obscure and long-forgotten tunes. You get the idea he’s bursting with a sense of romance and enthusiasm. The world is certainly there for him to obsessively explore and understand, and he can find wonder in the most mundane of places. “I walked past a charity shop the other day. There were two blokes doing the Easter window display, which I’d describe as the type of people you’d be intimidated by. One of them was lining up some daffodils, the other directing from the side of the window. I thought: ‘I bet they didn’t imagine this a few years ago.’” At moments his work reveals a vulnerable side. Perhaps this is where his talent for observation originates; a more arrogant individual might lack an interest in the world. His show ‘The Newsagent’s Window’ saw Osborne exploring the stories behind the innocuous postcard adverts in his local shop. Once again he looked at something and wasn’t content to accept it at face value. “I wouldn’t say that a story can come from anything. But, there are certain things I can look at, that I want to explore in detail.” He admits he’s no investigative journalist, postulating much from mere snapshots of conversations, he could even be accused of benevolently filling in the gaps when details are missing. Although not a verbatim account, these romantic

By Stuart Rolt

supplements do bring his subjects to life. It also reveals what he expects from people, that he wants everyone to be fundamentally good, optimistic and stoic. His gentle wit and knack for clever wordplay has taken him to festivals like Latitude, Glastonbury and Bestival, presenting his own Radio 4 programme and performing at Edinburgh and Brighton Fringes. The latter welcomes him once more with a new work. The remit has evolved, concentrating on the different methods we use to get through the day. With poems inspired by his experiences in a minimum wage office job, ‘Most People Aren’t That Happy, Anyway’ reflects the lives of a group of outwardly miserable people. Observing their conversations during the daily grind, accounts of illness, abusive ex-partners, trials and tribulations, he started to wonder about the nature of stoicism. “I thought these are not happy people, but there was a real inner strength to all of them, this real resilience. They weren’t complaining, they just got on with it.” It’s something we should be proud of, Osborne is adamant about that, describing it as: “that war mentality”. Common perception paints the British rolling up their sleeves and struggling through. So now his new show offers accounts of normal people and their reactions to everyday adversity. He’s certainly proud of his new show, saying it may be the funniest and diverse thing he’s written. So does the downbeat nature of the show’s title indicate a new shade of bitterness creeping into his work? “I’d not really thought of it. Maybe I’ve had enough of the whimsical and blindly optimistic.” He may meanderingly comment upon the apparently mundane, but the results are rarely less beautiful, valuable or captivating than the most epic legend or successful film franchise. Whilst warm and familiar, his observations expose the fleeting nature of human experiences. Beneath his gentle demeanour lays a sharpness of wit and intensity of purpose. Comical, insightful and steadfastly relatable, John Osborne’s special gift is cataloguing our experiences, showing us that we are not alone. John Osborne: Most People Aren’t That Happy, Anyway comes to Otherplace at the Basement, on Fri 8 – Sun 10 May, as part of Brighton Fringe. www.brightonfringe.org

Stuart Black Oops! I did it again Along with expressive use of language, deft storytelling and a sense of romanticism, Stuart Black’s stand-up comedy is powered by his aptitude for dubious choices. But rather than attempting to titillate or impress with this litany of excess, he simply depicts an existence away from privilege, convention or indifference. Moving from the West Country to Brighton in the 90s, his imagination was instantly captured by the tail-end of the rave scene. Living in an attic, a housemate introduced him to the legendary Zap Club. “I was never cognoscente with the dance scene,” Black admits. “I just wanted to have a good time and get off my tits.” We’re both soaking up the watery spring sunshine outside the Komedia and he’s reminiscing about being lost whilst driving around London on acid, getting sucked off in the Market Diner and an extended depressed lethargy when he wouldn’t wash for seven months. The Brighton he knew then isn’t really different today though. It may have moved upmarket, but remains a place where free-thinkers like Black can flourish. “I haven’t lived a very normal life, but if you look around here it’s full of people who wouldn’t dream of living a normal life,” he laughs, looking up the street. Blithely ignoring the mental effects of a languorous dolefinanced lifestyle, Black admits he was probably his own worst enemy back then. Things calmed, at least for a while, when he

By Stuart Rolt landed himself a job. “It’s so true about routine. I was probably financially worse off, as I couldn’t get housing benefit. But I had a reason to get up.” From here there was a range of different jobs, from cleaning to putting lids on bottles of dog shampoo. But impulsiveness can be a powerful mistress, no matter where you are. One moment he was gainfully employed by a global software giant, the next he’s sold up and immersing himself in the Cape Town underworld. I had braced myself to find Black arrogant or abrasive, but in person there’s no boastful edge to him. Like a puppy that’s just bitten a balloon, there’s a sense of bemusement when he recalls his misadventures. Not taking up comedy until well into his 30s, he realised he’d a plethora of colourful life experience to fall back on. Trying a range of different styles initially, his comedy evolved into something far from the trend of overenthusiastic 20-somethings and their ‘whacky’ observations. “I understand, but it’s the Starbucks of comedy! If you want something with a bit more depth, more spikey or more unusual, then I’m your man!” His last show ‘The Crossroads’ assembled an almost fetid collection of his experiences. This vivid and occasionally awkward assembly of wretchedness is reflected on, not with horror at the depravity, but as lessons learnt

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 39 ]

Urbane, chatty and thoroughly charming, Black is happy to discusses with me why oppressive regimes run great holiday destinations, the hypocrisy from freedom of speech advocates and why is it called the ‘beauty industry’ when it aims to make you feel so ugly? If he’s an indulgent rogue or counter-culture hero, it’s hard to say. He’s a romantic idealist certainly and as with Kerouac’s Dean Moriarty, or Thompson’s Dr Gonzo, he appears utterly enamoured with life and all its varied experiences. Maybe with his air of the poetic outsider, he would have been better living in 20th century America. His spirit of adventure and endless quest for something undefined would sit perfectly with the ‘Beat Generation’, at least more than with Britain’s aimless modern culture. We gave up our search for a philosophical identity long ago, instead embracing mass neurosis and the pursuit of celebrity status. The media encourages us to obsess about moral values, but we expect more from others than ourselves. It’s a society Black observes from the periphery, his humour combining honest opinions and the wrongness of his anecdotes. “Even in some horrific political events there’s some humour to be found, at least in our reactions to them.”

BRIGHTON ROCKERS VS ROYAL WINDSOR ROLLERGIRLS (AWAY)

NEVER SEEN ROLLER DERBY BEFORE? WONDER WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT? WANT TO DO SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING AT THIS YEAR’S FRINGE? NOW’S YOUR CHANCE!

Far from being self-obsessed, infatuated with money or blind to inequality, Black seeks to share his hardearned worldly wisdom with us, regardless of how unpalatable it might be. Even his visit to Fringe is typically leftfield, performing free performances every weekend at The Caroline of Brunswick. This new work ‘Lemsip & Cigarettes’ remains complex and thought provoking, he is slowly allowing his sense of silliness onto his stage. “We’ll have a serious talk about something. Then I’ll just dick about a bit,” he laughs. Having given up drinking four years ago, the show partly details his journey into sobriety. Now the titular cigarettes are also gone. So when does hilarious recollection turn into poignant nostalgia? “It’s one of my big fears. I don’t want all my good stories to be from 20 years ago.”

Stuart Black’s ‘Lemsip & Cigarettes’ comes to The Caroline of Brunswick on every Fri, Sat and Sun evening throughout May. www.stuartblack.com

Image © John Hesse

Funny, eloquent and profound, Black seems immune to the desperation of past predicaments. After an adult life spent peering down the wrong end of the telescope, he’s got some pragmatic viewpoints on age-old themes - sex, money and death. This gentle and affable man may have embraced sobriety, but he’ll never become boring. “I always say: ‘Don’t take people’s advice!’ I’m not trying to be contrary, but it is better to find out for yourself… Just experiment a bit.”

11 Crescent Place, Kemptown

This new one-woman show by Faro Productions, takes a playful look at the life of notorious exotic dancer, spy and seductress, Mata Hari. Through a funny, feisty and moving retelling of some of the key events in her life, we journey from her childhood to her execution, as she wants you to remember it.

A cast of three explores the importance of keeping up appearances and what happens when an honour code is broken. An East End gangster and his ‘friend’ await an irrevocably life-changing visit whilst chaos ensues because a boy has been sent to do a man’s job.

Part of the WINDOW industry showcase, the Brighton based Theatre North show us what dreams are made of. Following the huge success of 2011’s bathroom-based Billy Budd Sailor, once again the production will be performed in the intimate setting of a private house.

Its 2015, and she wants to make it clear she isn’t dead. Her alter-ego, Lady Margaretha Zelle MacLeod, was certainly arrested as a double agent and executed by a French firing squad in 1917, but Hari herself lives on.

Starting life as a new writing competition winner at London’s Soho Theatre, this warm and clever piece redefines the meaning of ‘gay mafia’. Subtle and subversive, it’s an underworld tragicomedy which ponders if you can truly escape your destiny, be you killer or victim.

This exuberant one-man adaptation reimagines Shakespeare’s classic as peopled by gay characters. Exploring the body as a tool for storytelling, the play moves through a landscape of the senses. “How beauteous mankind is! Oh brave new world that has such people in’t”.

There are four actors, 50 characters and one chance to save Hollywood in this musical satire. It’s the year 2042 and Hollywood as we know it is out of money and ideas. Then a washed-up producer sees a chance to revive the blockbuster franchises of his youth. But transferring Selma the Dutiful Housewife to the silver screen is a journey fraught with danger, intrigue and near-apocalyptic consequences.

The Waters Sisters use illusion-laden photography, film and soundscapes, projected upon themselves and stage, to create a unique multimedia experience. Inspired by one woman’s experience of a psychotic episode, it examines pseudoscientific white-coats and Jungian archetypes. We see an astronaut’s dramatic fall to earth, an obsession with the colour orange, how to become the perfect man and a partial transformation into a faun. This otherworldly performance offers a dreamscape narrative and a triptych of archetypes - the mystic, the hero and the iconoclast outlaw. It’s bold, mesmerising, scary and thoroughly unique. www.thewaterssisters.com

Fri 1 - Tue 5 May Otherplace @ The Basement (The An old photograph from WW2, found in an attic, inspired this gripping and poignant wartime love story. A very original take on a wartime relationship, it focuses on the love affair between a soldier and the nurse who saved him. The photo featured the uncle of Brighton writer/producer and award-winning teen author, Jill Hucklesby, at his wedding near enemy lines in Italy during May 1944. Set during one of the war’s fiercest campaigns, the play sees an old soldier who is finally confronting the past and finding the only road home leads back to Monte Cassino. www.jillhucklesbyproductions.co.uk

Blending action-packed film sequences, live performance and lightning-quick costume changes, Point & Shoot sees increasingly ridiculous plot twists, show-stopping musical numbers… and the occasional explosion. www.pointandshootmusical.com

The Warren (Theatre Box) Laboratory Theatre Company presents their debut play. A multimedia production ‘Threesome’ follows Sam and Kate as they progress through an evening which may or may not change their marriage. In an attempt to spice up their relationship the couple meet Lucy. This adult-orientated play follows the trio as they negotiate the unorthodox protocol of what happens next.

MOON TALES Sat 2, Sat 9, Sat 16, Sat 23, Sat 30 May The Warren (Theatre Box)

Award-winning theatre troupe, The Off-OffOff-Broadway Company, return to Brighton with an old-school chiller. With an emphasis on atmosphere and good old-fashioned storytelling, it’s a taut thriller about guilt, faith and the power of fear. Inspired by real-life events, this creepy and disturbing piece sees an old woman living alone in a labyrinth of a mansion, hiding from ghosts she believes are hunting her. An exotic medium offers to help her make peace with the dead before she joins them, but she may have invited a more real threat into her home…

Exeter Street Hall Something Underground Theatre Co, and Kate Darach premiere 13 tales based on the old names for the full moons. Each chapter offers a different interweaving story, from 16th Century Yorkshire to affluent Johannesburg, from a middle-aged femme fatale to a teenage porn star; these are dark, witty and thought-provoking statements of what it is to be a woman, across time and place. Eloquent and poetic, whilst also bitingly direct, this is engaging, challenging theatre which muses on the particular and universal aspects of womanhood.

Wed 13 – Sat 16 May

Brighton Spiegeltent: Bosco A distorted after-dark fairy-tale comes to The Spiegeltent, courtesy of Certain Dark Things Theatre Company. This gloriously macabre Victorian sideshow is packed with beauty, jealousy and poison. Bold and immersive, it tells the evocative and compelling story of a familiar young heroine and her many painful deaths. Combining stunning puppetry, physical theatre and an original live score, this dark retelling of the Snow White legend is sure to be the grimmest tale you have ever heard. Be warned, this is not a normal fairy tale, and there will be no happy endings. www.certaindarkthingstheatrecompany.com

The Warren (Theatre Box) Actor and theatre maker Jenny Kondol’s acclaimed show tackles the tough issue of Bulimia, aiming to raise awareness for this often hidden illness. Using her personal experience, she uses drama, dark comedy, clowning and silliness to make the seriousness of eating disorders accessible to the audience. Encouraging others, particularly young people, to challenge the media and public obsession with self-image, the goal is to engage as many people as possible to rethink their perceptions of eating disorders. It’s a voyeuristic, charming and thoroughly compelling account of a life shared by countless people. www.permanentlyvisibleproductions.co.uk

THE KILTED TOMMY

STITCH IT!

Thu 14, Sun 17, Fri 22 - Sat 23 May The Old Courtroom

Sun 17 – Tue 19 May

With a little help from Shakespeare and Rupert Brooke, the story of soldier Harry Kay is presented with humour and compassion. Written and performed by Kay’s grandson, Historical Interpretation’s Simon Waterfield, the piece looks at how the Great War influenced his life.

Placed as the mime of our time, after Marcel Marceau, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, this show is a major victory for Inbal Nelly Lewis. Just four years ago, after the birth of her first son, she was confined to her bed and nobody thought she would be able to mime or dance ever again.

The personal story of an ordinary Lancashire lad, Kay was posted to a Scottish Regiment, becoming one of many Englishmen who fought in kilts for their country. We find out why Harry joined up, about his training, his first battle at Loos and the nature of war and comradeship.

This is no classic pantomime or traditional mime piece, it’s a mature creation inspired by experiences of both birth and motherhood. A solo show conveying passion without words, it tells of a woman’s journey, it’s a story of every woman, of every creation, touching the root of the process of life.

Joe Orton’s finest work comes to Brighton, with all the seaside sauciness of a picture postcard. With a satirical stare at the law, religion and British institutions, this is the ultimate English farce, whilst acting as a testament to the genius of 60s playwright Joe Orton. A woman in her 20s, who has already lost seven husbands to tragic accidents, should know a thing or two about love and inheritance tax. But she might not be the only one up to no good. Mix in a man that can’t resist telling the truth and an overlyinquisitive visitor who claims to be from the water board, and getting away with it all stops being so simple. www.facebook.com/fertiletheatreco

The Brighton University Drama Society debuts at Fringe with a timely adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s bestselling novel. With plenty of witches, wizards, witty dialogue and satire, it offers a fantasy twist on Macbeth. Putting the magic back into fantasy storytelling, it’s a nonstop volley of bellylaughs and subtle positive messages, but not in any way that the Bard envisaged. Charged with an infant royal, Esme Weatherwax handles the senselessness of Discworld with hard-headed practicality.

Sonic explorer Mr Fogg performs a live show he’s created especially for Brighton Fringe. Based on the forthcoming album of the same name, it re-imagines chamber music for the 21st century pop song, with Fogg’s beautiful songwriting embellished by piano, harmonium and live strings.

A musical revue of intimate songs, it examines the complexities of relationships in the 21st century, questioning the true meaning of love and loss with uncompromising honesty. Marianna Harlotta, the world-class diva extraordinaire, unveils her brand new show at Brighton Fringe 2015. This internationally renowned, continent-hopping operatic legend is at the top of her game. Life is enchanting and sweet, the world is her oyster and everyone loves her... or do they?

Edward Lambert ponders what opera is, or might be, all about. Whilst not an elitist form of entertainment in its subject matter, opera is often only accessible to the financial confortable. As with all art forms, it becomes a lot more relevant to people when they participate in it.

With help from her ‘world-class’ violin virtuoso accompanist Vladimir Chestikov and her favourite owl, Diva of Disaster is a comic foray into the universe of a woman who knows she is the centre of it all.

Lambert has written his own opera. New and different, it’s also designed to be comprehensible and enjoyable for ordinary music lovers. President Ronald Reagan and Spike Milligan are joined by a catfish, proof opera can also think out of the box.

Laughing Horse @ The Hobgoblin Apparently acute Britishness is a serious syndrome. Mark Daniels is a sufferer, so now his self-deprecating sarcasm questions why Brits just won’t complain. Not even about the country’s biggest problems: school textbooks, STD clinics, Craig David or Nigella Lawson. We could learn much from the rest of the world.

Dukebox Theatre Courtship, wooing and chivalry, they’ve all been murdered by Tinder and nightclub ‘romance’. After a short sell out run at Edinburgh 2014. Nicole Harvey unveils her debut one-woman show, expanding upon stories from her on-going comedy webisodes.

Vitriolic political satire meets manic depravity at this free event. Ashley Haden offers sharply observed, no-holds-barred condemnations of domestic and foreign affairs. He’s quickly building up a reputation as one of the circuit’s finest political and topical comedians.

This all started when this confident, impressive performer wrote a list of 30 things to do before he was 30. One of which was to try out stand-up comedy. Now he makes his Brighton comic debut.

Nicole wonders how living an adventurous, non-conformist life put her on the shelf? A fusion of personal story, social commentary, and character comedy, the show takes us on a guided tour round the major landmarks of her dating history.

Joining him is LJ Da Funk, the brainchild of comedy outcast Zak Splijt. A self-styled New York gangster, he tells jokes that are ostensibly idiotic but with wit and wisdom bubbling under. Now, the pair bring their wildly different, but equally contentious comedic stylings, together for the first time!

Komedia The Argus Angel Award winner returns to Fringe for a third time, for one night only. She’s been fat, thin and everything between. Now, she’ll change even more! New To Cinema Far from the Madding Crowd – Fri 1 May This May, Danish director Thomas Vinterberg - alongside writer David Nicholls (‘One Day’) - is adapting the classic Thomas Hardy novel about Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors in the form of a farm owner, a reckless sergeant and a thriving bachelor. This is an interesting project for Vinterberg to take on, having previously tackled difficult subjects of family abuse, paedophilia and mass hysteria in award-winning Danish films such as ‘The Hunt’ and ‘Festen’. Hopefully his arthouse style will bring a fresh new approach to a traditional Hardy story.

Mad Max: Fury Road – Thu 14 May Forget Tina Turner and forget the ‘Thunderdome’, Mad Max is back. 30 years after the last installment, the director of the first three Mad Max movies - George Miller - is bringing the road warrior to a new generation in the form of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Bronson’ star Tom Hardy. Set in a (yep, you guessed it) postapocalyptic desert landscape where people must fight to the death, Mad Max: Fury Road sees our protagonist team up with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) in order to try and survive crossing the desert in one piece.

Pitch Perfect 2 – Fri 15 May They’re back, pitches! Rowdy singing group the Barden Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 2, ready to take on the competitive world of acapella internationally in a contest no American team has ever won. Cue some catchy mash-ups, delightfully witty writing from Kay Cannon (‘Pitch Perfect’, ‘30 Rock’, ‘New Girl’) and spot on performances from the regular crew, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Elizabeth Banks (who also directed this latest installment). With all the hoo-ha of the new ‘Avengers’ and ‘Jurassic World’ soon to arrive in June, Pitch Perfect 2 will be the perfect light relief.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night - Fri 22 May With everyone getting a bit tired of the ‘Twilight’ tweenie vampire flicks, there have been some refreshing alternatives in recent years with the likes of Swedish chiller ‘Let The Right One In’ and Jim Jarmusch’s moody ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’. Now there’s A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, an Iranian horror, based around a lonesome vampire who spends her nights stalking the people of Bad City. This film is already receiving massive praise and award nominations from its American audiences, with the filmmakers - including director Ana Lily Amirpour - picking up a few Independent Spirit Award nods.

Fascination with the Guinness Book of World Records is a kind of shared human experience. We all probably at some time – most likely as a child – flicked through that great volume to ‘–ests’; the biggest, the fastest, the more-than-anybody else. Many of those records may still resonate in your memory somewhat, the world’s fattest twins riding on their bikes, or Lee Redmond the woman with the world’s longest fingernails. The Guinness Book of World Records was the inspiration behind Sam Green’s newest project ‘The Measure of All Things’, which will show as part of Brighton Festival. Like many kids, Green read and was fascinated by the various records, but on coming across the book later in life, he saw it as more than just a book about ‘–ests’. Instead, he saw it as a sort of record of the human experience. “About five years ago I came across an old copy,” he says, “and I was struck by two things. One – that I remembered all the photos. Looking at them I was instantly transported back in time to being a kid. Looking at it, I was also struck by the serious side of it. In some ways it was a tragic, odd and beautiful self-portrait of… us, of humanity, of the outer contours of the human experience. It really moved me.” From that point, Sam Green set forth to make ‘The Measure of All Things’, looking at the very human stories behind many of these superhuman records. Instead of focusing on the freak show aspect, Green instead arranges the film as a series of portraits; for example looking at the world’s most powerful supercomputer circa ’92 (which only had 32MB of memory) and the story of Roy Sullivan, who survived being struck by lightning a record six times, but eventually took his own life. Sam calls his portrait series of places, people and things “a poem about the mystery of being alive”.

Obviously the plot of this documentary is fascinating, but equally so is the way that Green gets his story across. For much of his career, he worked as a traditional documentary filmmaker, most notably making the Academy Award nominated ‘The Weather Underground’. However, in 2010 with ‘Utopia in Four Movements’, Green began restructuring his films into a ‘live documentary’. An on-going form, his projects deconstruct the elements of a documentary and rebuild them as a live event. Green narrates the piece on stage, supported by film clips, images and a live band (the chamber group yMusic and a trio made of Brendan Canty, T. Griffin and Catherine McRae). It is all the elements of cinema deconstructed and reconstructed for a live audience, resulting in a unique and collective experience. Sam Green’s motivation in continuing to explore this form comes from a variety of places. Most notably to create an alternative to how we consume film today. “As a filmmaker now, you have to accept that people are watching your work while on their laptops, while they’re checking Facebook… it’s the way we watch things now. I’m not against the Internet, I’m not a Luddite, but we pay attention in a fleeting way. I didn’t want my work to be in that context. Having a collective experience and giving yourself completely over to something is powerful… That’s the magic of cinema. I love that feeling when the lights go down and the movie starts. I want my work to be in that world.” There are of course issues with this. Our Netflix watching habits half-exist simply due to the convenience of having a cinema library at our fingertips. Whereas Green’s live work is much more momentary, and harder to attend, but this is something that he acknowledges.

ker “As a fil m m a now, you h ave t to accept th a people are r watchi ng you n work w hile o , their laptops w hile they’re checki ng Facebook...” “I’d much rather fewer people have a meaningful experience, something that will linger with them for a while than millions of people have the kind of throwaway experience when we watch a video online.” Green’s acceptance of this fact also pairs the concepts of ‘The Measure of All Things’ form with its content. The live film format is about creating moments which have meaning but are fundamentally fleeting, and that reflects a lot of the film’s message about these record holders. It looks at their wonderful, beautiful and sometimes sad records and lives, but acknowledges that they are short-lived. One of life’s little ironies unfolded during the making of ‘The Measure of All Things’, as Green actually ended up in the book itself. “I didn’t even have to hula-hoop for 78 hours. At some point in my research the Guinness Book of World Records got in touch with me because they found a photo of me at the quietest place on Earth (the anechoic chamber at Minnesota’s Orfield Labs). And there’s a photo of me holding a microphone, so they asked if they could use that to illustrate the quietest place on Earth. I said ‘of course!’ because as a kid I always wanted to be in the Guinness Book of World Records.” There will be three performances of ‘The Measure of All Things’ at The Old Market as part of Brighton Festival, taking place at 7.30pm on Sat 23 May and 4 & 7.30pm on Sun 24 May. www.theoldmarket.com/shows/measure-things

Bison Beer Crafthouse Brewers whoop! Brighton’s first specialist beer shop, Bison Beer Crafthouse has opened its doors on East Street. Situated just off the seafront, it offers an eclectic and unpanelled range of beers. Founders Jack Cregan and Nick Vardy offer Brighton’s beer drinkers the very best of the recent craft brewing revolution in a relaxed environment. The Bison Beer Crafthouse store has been lovingly furnished with locally sourced reclaimed and recycled materials. Here, customers can choose their favourite beers and discover new brews from the range of 365 different varieties, sourced from around the world. Not for 70 years has there been such a flurry of activity amongst independent brewers. Beer is now developing a new identity, as small breweries busy themselves reinventing this most traditional of drinks. Ruined by the larger manufacturers in the 70s, the image of ‘proper’ beer has now returned to the ascendancy. After the government introduced tax breaks for small breweries in 2002, the scene hasn’t looked back. No longer is it the sole preserve of lonely gentlemen with patched elbows on their jackets, modern beer is sexy, enthralling and fun. Bison Beer works with local businesses and restaurants, such as 64 degrees, The Salt Room and The Set at Artist Residence, identifying and pairing beer with their dishes. It is the first shop to bring draught ‘growlers’ to Brighton. These refillable 64 ounce (1.9 litres) bottles are filled using a counter-pressure machine that keeps your chosen beer fresh for up to six weeks.

7 East Street, Brighton, BN1 1HP

And as soon as the keg runs dry the boys at Bison Beer will stick a different craft beer on! Local, independent and proud, a main Bison Beer objective is to support local brewers. This flourishing scene currently features 63 micro-breweries in Sussex alone. If anyone wants to join that number, there’s a wealth of expertise and knowledge on offer in-store. ‘Meet the Brewer’ evenings are a regular feature at the shop, and regular brew-school sessions with Home Brew Depot are held just over the road. These one-day introductory courses show you how to create a dream pint. Master brewers teach you the tricks of the trade, and how just a few jars, some tubing, grains and plenty of patience will help you craft your very own beer. At the end of the day you’ll go home with all the equipment you need to brew, as well as the product of your day. Bison Beer Crafthouse brew their own tasty See Side APA as well. The initial run of this sold out in just a week, but is set to return this month. Encouraging you to drink, explore and discover, the shop is an adventure of beers sourced from all around the world, its centrepiece is a portrait of Brad Bison, the gentleman travelling to find them. It’s the perfect place to drink in the variety, creativity, innovation and proliferation of great beer. Northern Lights Chairman of the Smörgåsbord On a recent Friday evening, wanting a break from your average Brighton and Hove gastro pub, a friend and I turned our attention to Brighton’s Scandinavian corner of Little East Street. Providing a fully themed experience, The Northern Lights boasts a lively and loyal crowd with authentic nods to the owners’ roots. From outside, the bustling seating area and illuminated blue woodenframed windows are enough to draw anyone in from the chilly evenings that set in when the sun disappears. Approaching the threshold into what feels like another world, the sign outside gives any visitor a teaser of what’s to come. The Northern Lights’ mantra is stated simply with an afterthought at the end: ‘Thor prayer meetings held monthly’ with a helpful instruction below that still, gently reminding punters, ‘please bring your own ABBA CDs’. Greeted by friendly faces (don’t stereotype, not all of them are tall and blond), we’re led upstairs. On a bench seat in the middle of the floor, we’ve got a fantastic view of the pub. An eclectic mash of all walks of life gives The Northern Lights a vibrant atmosphere and a laid-back ambience. The lovely owner Pauliina’s son looks after us and with a charming smile Jasu talks us through the menu. We’re told that the kitchen and table service (upstairs only) run right through until midnight so there’s no sense in rushing. A great start to the evening. We scan the menu and select a house cured classic gravadlax starter (£5.95), complimented by pickled cucumbers and Hovmästars dressing (a Swedish mustard sauce) with rye bread.

The gravadlax itself is prepared carefully – that much is evident from the first bite: moist, tender and perfectly flavoursome. We’re also tempted by a sharing platter with a fantastically inviting name: the Viking’s Best Friend (£10.50). This is a porkbased platter featuring honey glazed ham, ham hock terrine and meatballs (the latter being the hot element and tasting divinely rich). It comes with a selection of cheeses all with unique flavours tying in nicely with the meats; a Danish blue, Jarlsberg and goat’s cheese. As suggested by the nod to the Vikings, we felt like we’d eaten enough for four rather than two. Odin help anybody that would undertake this platter alone. The well-rounded menu also has a gluten free, vegetarian and vegan guide, in keeping with the prominent sense of inclusion that The Northern Lights maintains. If you can handle it, you can even ‘make it mega’ for £1.50 on certain dishes. As I’m sure most people in the city are aware, the Scandinavian drinks menu is quite something at this pub. We started with an Icelandic pale ale called Einstök and a lemon and ginger fruit cider by the name of älska (pronounced elska) by The Swedish Cider Company. Jasu upholds his duty as host and recommends us some of the house’s most popular shots, and who are we to say no? Infused with the flavour of Nordic berries, wild tea and Minttu Peppermint, we are quite merry and in full swing of what the pub is all about. If you want great food and service and the chance to continue your night with lively music without breaking the bank, look no further.

The Joker Wing when you’re sinning... Last year I decided to go travelling around a bit and see what the rest of the world had to offer… turns out that the answer to that is ‘an awful bloody lot’. One of the best things (apart from the sea, sunshine, people, excitement and general atmosphere of tomfoolery) was getting to eat some mind-blowing Asian and South American cuisine. The first time I ate razor clams fresh from the sea and lightly grilled with garlic, I fell into the water. I’m going to say that this had nothing to do with the ten or so cocktails I’d sampled before, and everything to do with the sublime taste. The last place on my hit list was going to be America, the biggest draw being the food. Don’t get me wrong; they’ve got some cracking films, beautiful scenery and great people, but the food looks good enough to make me swim over various seas to get a bite. I didn’t get to go to America in the end (it was mainly a problem with me needing money and realising I’d spent it all, but that’s not the point). The point is GIVE ME THE FOOD! With this anger at the lack of American cuisine in my life, I literally ran over to The Joker on Preston Circus to sample what I’d heard was a very delicious offering of American goodness. The Joker is what every hip but not-trying-too-hard pub should be. There are very cool things adorning the walls, such as an awesome blue-lit skull and a television that was showing trippy but pleasing imagery. The walls are dark and daring, the wooden floorboards completing the feeling that you are in a chilled but curious place. My wandering eye was immediately struck however by ‘The Joker Express’ - a replica of a train carriage complete with old suitcases in the overhead storage and a glass sliding door - that looks like it has been plucked straight from an Agatha Christie novel. Wandering in and sitting on the comfy red leather ‘carriage seats’, we perused the American-inspired fare and chose our drinks. I opted for a large Alta Vista Malbec (£6.90), which was a big whack of plummy, fruity gorgeousness and dangerously easy to drink.

2 Preston Road Brighton, BN1 4QF

By Lucy Hallett Food-wise, we went for the award-winning Buffalo wings, which are a very reasonable £7 for 8. You can choose two different sauces, so being wimps we went for the BBQ and the Original flavour. For the more adventurous, they go all the way to the super hot ‘Viper’, made with Naga chillies and chilli extract. We also chose The Buffalo Reuben Sandwich (£8) - a mound of salt beef, melted Swiss cheese and sauerkraut slathered in blue cheese dressing and their signature sauce. To round off this feast we picked steak cut chips (£3) and homemade slaw (£2.50) as sides. The Reuben was everything you want in a sandwich - the high quality beef was so plentiful that it spilled out the sides, and the perfect amount of sauerkraut and cheese added a richness and sharpness to the juicy star of the show. The chips were wonderfully golden and crunchy, served with more blue cheese, this time in a heavenly dip that I found myself scooping at constantly. The coleslaw, (something that I find gets messed around with far too often), was fresh, crisp and without the over-indulging of mayonnaise that so often ruins it. It’s hard to mention the wings without producing a strange faraway little smile and remembering their sheer, messy appeal. So often they get rushed out and end up flabby and uninspiring, however these were a thing of beauty. Dripping in ridiculously flavoursome sauce with a slightly crunchy skin, this tasty exterior complemented the succulence of the chicken perfectly. We finished in true American style by adding even more food in the form of the Homemade Pecan Pie served with Brighton’s ‘Boho Gelato’ brown bread ice cream (£5). The pie was sweet and silky with the pecans adding just the right amount of texture. Some genius in the kitchen had decided to couple this with a milky, unctuous ice cream, which worked excellently. The Joker delivered the perfect American food experience with a menu fit for that US insatiable appetite, complete with the need to unbutton my jeans after. But when food tastes this good then ‘frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn’.

Be Gluten Free By Mila Statham

Polenta Mini Pizzas Recipe (Makes 4 small pizzas) 200g polenta 1 & 3/4 pint water 1 tsp dried herbs 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped 1 1/2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tsp salt

Once golden and firm, top with your favourite toppings and put back in the oven for 5 - 10 minutes until the cheese melts.

Bring the water to the boil in a large saucepan. Once boiling, gradually whisk in the polenta until it combines and the water is completely absorbed. Remove from the heat if it starts bubbling too much. Whisk until you have a smooth firm mixture then stir in the oil, herbs and salt. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment and grease the paper with a bit of oil. Dollop 4 big blobs of the mixture onto the tray. Flatten and shape each one with a spatula until they are approximately 1/2 cm thick. Use oiled hands to do this if it is too sticky to use a spatula and place in the fridge for an hour to set. Preheat the oven to 200c and bake the pizza bases in the oven for 30 minutes flipping once just over half way through. Be careful - they stick so handle with care.
