EDITOR'S MESSAGE:
Next month Britain is facing yet another visit to the polls. At the moment, we’re offered a part in the democratic process with tedious regularity, but let’s not forget how important it really is. Many young people will be thinking: ‘Why should I take part? Politicians don’t give a shit about me…’ Which indeed they don’t. It’s easy to ignore a section of the electorate when they are discretionally unlikely to make their voices heard. This is a chance to help decide our nation’s attitudes to fair pay, to providing free healthcare, who we go to war with, how we treat the venerable members of our community and who pays their share of taxes. In the same time as it takes to sign up for a social media account, you can register to participate in something millions have died for. Your opinion does matter, and by participating on Thurs 8 June all political parties will be forced to hear it. www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

www.wowcircus.co.uk
www.kriyaarts.co.uk
Weds 17 May – Sun 4 June Roll up, roll up! Gerry Cottle's WOW! Circus is coming to the Brighton Fringe with a magnificent big top tent in Preston Park. Cottle, known by some as the circus king, has been in the wacky industry for 50 years and travelled all around the globe with his extravaganzas. He continues to make his shows as exhilarating and chaotic as ever, attracting the world’s finest performers and delighting audiences. The show will contain 50 acts in just 100 minutes, some of which will be talented WOW! stars led by Sarah Cottle and Ellen Ramsay, performing shocking daredevil acts high up off the ground. There will be unicycles, roller skates, juggling on the back of a moving quad bike and, most stomach-turning of all, a motorbike on the high wire. Cottle will be presenting a UK first: MAGIQUE, with the Queens of Magic. These ladies will be demonstrating Las Vegas style illusions, so expect to see people being chopped in half and more! There will be trapeze artists, fire, glitz, tricks and of course, a ton of shock factor. This show is guaranteed to be an extraordinary experience for the whole family.
Fri 5 – Sun 28 May
As HIP returns to Brighton Fringe Festival this year, artists Jolie Booth and Sinna One are rebooting the famous Unicorn Bookshop mural on Gloucester Road. The bookshop will feature in an immersive 'Psychedelic Wander' through the streets of Brighton. The HIP Trip of Brighton explores the story of Brightonian Anne Clarke, whose letters and diaries of a past Brighton were discovered by ex-squatter Ms Booth. Anne's writing is said to have uncovered a lot about the history of Brighton, particularly in the ‘60s and ’70s, including some experiences of which Ms Booth has shared in the city. In this theatrical walking tour, including a pub crawl you’ll have the chance to visit places which Anne wrote about, and see how she left an imprint on the city. You’ll also be able to find out why the Unicorn Bookshop has such an importance within the culture of Brighton. Tours will begin on Fri 5 May. Get your ticket now for £9.50.
Paddle Round the Pier is all for a good cause, too. The festival has brought up to 55,000 people each year, and the event has raised £200,000 for charity. The festival co-operates with the Corporate Social Responsibility project, which enhances company team development and entails a commitment to raising money for worthwhile charities. 2017's charities are The RNLI, Brighton Surf Lifesaving and The Wave Project. If you fancy a weekend of free fun in the water, on the beach or on land, Paddle Round the Pier
What Did I Miss? Campaign
www.whatdidimiss.co.uk
Brighton and Hove City Council launched a What Did I Miss? campaign to shine light on road safety. As 42% of collisions are reported to be caused by failure to pay attention, the campaign will show how easily accidents can happen when distractions are involved. What Did I Miss? aims to encourage Brighton residents to be more considerate of not only their own lives, but others around them. The campaign tells us not to be so focused on our social media feeds, mobile phones and other devices.
© Jolie Booth
It's not just electrical devices that are an issue either. Having an argument, eating, drinking or lighting a cigarette also take up around 30-40% of the blame. Pedestrians also have responsibility when it comes to road safety, with one of the top causes of road accidents being a pedestrian failing to look. This is an ongoing campaign which hopes to continue to raise awareness to stay safe in one of the most dangerous day-to-day situations we face.

ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES Sat 6 – Mon 29 May. www.aoh.org.uk
The largest event of its kind in the UK, Brighton’s Artists Open Houses festival (AOH) takes place in Brighton, Hove and beyond over four weekends of May, starting Sat 6 May. Over 1,500 artists and makers participate, exhibiting at around 200 houses and studio spaces across the city and bringing in over 200,000 visitors to this free event. AOH helps artists connect with audiences in self-curated, nontraditional art spaces. This often means visiting artists’ own homes, offering festival-goers an exclusive snapshot of how artists live in this vibrant and creative city. It also offers the chance to buy artwork directly from the artists and makers themselves, from original paintings, prints, graffiti arts, ceramics and textiles to photography, sculpture, crafts, jewellery and more. “Brighton & Hove is an incredibly creative city with a wealth of talent,” says Judy Stevens, Artists Open Houses Festival Director. “The festival is a fantastic platform for artists and makers, and it’s a testament to its success that so many artists of all ages and at all stages of their careers choose to take part.” Festival highlights include AOH 2017 Brochure cover artist Penelope
Kenny’s A Curious Taxonomy collection, exploring the relationship between humans and other animals, creating hybrids of fascinating new creatures. Penelope creates limited edition textiles, fine art screen prints, wallpapers and books using hand-made inks made from pure pigments and metallic glazes. Colour Laine, a hidden North Laine gem, will be opening for their 5th year of participating in AOH. They’ll be showcasing Zoe Murphy‘s screenprinted furniture and textiles from Margate & Mexico (Liberty of London, Kirstie’s Vintage Home) and Toby ‘fotobes’ Mason‘s Lomographic film photography. The Socially Engaged Art Salon (SEAS) will exhibit the provocative installation The New Union Flag by Gil Mualem Doron, which reflects on England’s colonial past and Britain’s present multicultural society. Also being exhibited are The Migrant English Project’s members’ collages on ceramics, and Louise Purbrick and Elaine Ortiz’ project !Make it Happen!: Homes for Refugees. Artists Open Houses festival comes to venues across Brighton & Hove and surrounding areas on weekends between Sat 6 – Mon 29 May. www.aoh.org.uk
Just when I thought I had seen all the delirium the younger generation have brought to this doomed planet, I was proved wrong. I tell you what, these music festivals are bizarre. I approached this alien world, which took place in a large field full of mud, where I assume there may once have been grass. Not only was the music abysmal, far too loud and packed with lyrics that are 80% jargon, but it didn’t seem to be much about music at all. I felt as though I was David Attenborough navigating a safari... Around me half-naked young men and ladies wearing patterned clothes brightly enough to send one back to his tent with a migraine. Not to mention all this glitter people have smothered over themselves - it resembles the stuff on the dried pasta drawing one of my grandchildren brought home the other evening. These things they call ‘toilets’ are not really toilets at all, either. They’re just holes which one might suspect to be the gateway to a powerfully dungsmelling underworld, where toilet roll has clearly not been introduced yet. It wasn't all bad, though. I was reluctantly - speaking to a younger chap who said he would only leave me alone if I had a lager with him. It wasn't my usual scotch, and tasted rather grainy, but certainly left me in good spirits. The evening saw me dancing with a group of youths, feeling as though I was in love with everything and everyone - much like these hippies seemed to be. As hideous as it sounds, I haven't had that kind of energy in years! But despite drinking the best Carling I've ever had, I cannot say I'll be back at a music festival anytime soon.

The Snowcat Trail Opens 1 May
www.lostcatsbrighton.org.uk
Last year we had Snowdogs. This year, Brighton brings us Snowcats. The Snowcat Trail will open on Mon 1 May and will consist of 46 magical Snowcats created by a variety of talented local artists. This is in aid of Lost Cats Brighton, a charity who rescue and re-home abandoned, unwanted or homeless felines. Channel 4's Gogglebox star Chris Steed is set to host the charity auction, along with a Cat Pub Quiz at Hanover’s Dover Castle pub on Tues 20 June. Steed explains that he is supporting the charity because “Losing a pet is one of the most traumatic experiences an owner can go through. I was distraught when our cat, Ginge, went missing, but I was very fortunate to get him back. As a result, this is a cause that's very close to my heart.” The bank holiday launch will be a funfilled family event consisting of home bakes, a Snowcat treasure hunt, face painting, games, crafts and more fun activities. There will also be a chance to meet some of the wonderful artists who designed each individual Snowcat - and if you manage to find all of them, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win lunch for two at Fanny's of Hanover.
2017's main headliner will be UK breakdancing champions Soul Mavericks. Soul Mavericks' crew is a collective of talented individuals with their own unorthodox style, stories, backgrounds, experiences and abilities. Having been a huge success in previous years with tickets selling out, this street dance show full of fresh young talent is an inspirational one for the whole family.

Brighton's Largest Soft Play Opens on Brighton Palace Pier www.brightonpier.co.uk
Brighton Palace Pier’s new owners are having a revamp! Electric, now called Brighton Pier Group, also own Coalition and Dirty Blonde. They bought the Palace Pier a year ago, and have already replaced some old attractions and opened a takeaway fish and chip bar at the head of the pier, with plans to do much more. Last September the Brighton Pier Group launched a trial soft play on the pier. Its success gave the team huge reassurance to open a new soft play area in the Dome. Palace Play will be the largest soft play area in Brighton – 231 square metres in total, where it will be able to facilitate 140 children. A new café is also opening in the dome, which will be an ideal area for parents and friends to sit back and relax whilst their children enjoy the Palace Play.
Exciting New Climbing Challenges at High Sports www.high-sports.co.uk
www.binghitchcock.com
After winning the main gold award prize at the highly competitive and prestigious Masters of Art International Competition in 2016, Brighton based artist Bing Hitchcock is set to launch his own gallery on Trafalgar Street. His journey started when he heard a Grayson Perry lecture on BBC Radio 4, which set out to demystify the art world. A professional musician for over 15 years, Hitchcock then forged a highly successful in filmmaking – working as a Camera Operator, Director of Photography and Director alongside some of the biggest stars in music and comedy. Instead of working on 24 frames a second, he decided to channel all his energy towards creating single frames. London’s Genesis Imaging introduced him to Chromaluxe an aluminium HD panel, which allows you to print at the highest quality. These are highly resilient and require no additional treatments to protect them. Using a process called ‘dye sublimation’ to fuse images on to metal, create a range of startling images – all highlighting that there is no colour without light. Bing Hitchcock (Pictured left)

THE LADY BOYS OF BANGKOK Fri 5 May – Sat 3 June
www.ladyboysofbangkok.co.uk
The Lady Boys are returning this year, and they’re going to be as glamorous, cheeky and funny as before - if not more! This year’s production, Who Runs the World!, is not about politics, but instead a celebration of the fair sex. This is going to be one huge party, starring 16 of Thailand's most talented and stunning cabaret showgirls. These performers are set to bring a colourful show without a dull moment in sight. They know no party is complete without music, so this show will be a mélange of Hollywood, Las Vegas and classic British music hall, with a whole load of songs – well known favourites included - and
large-scale musical productions. On Fridays and Saturdays the atmosphere at the shows is so lively and spirited the whole audience will be up and dancing. However, if you fancy something a little more relaxed, head down on weekdays and Sundays. This spectacular event will take place in Victoria Gardens on Grand Parade in a beautiful temporary venue – the Sabai Pavilion. This will be Brighton's magical corner of Bangkok during the Fringe, serving Thai food and plenty of booze to quench your needs. Tickets can be booked online at: www.brightonfringe.org.
So, we're in May and that dissertation deadline is looming. What's that coming over the hill - is it a monster? No, it's a student. Sleep-deprived and running on coffee, muscles growing larger every day with the increasing number of books you haul back from the library. Of course, your tutors will no doubt have warned you about leaving things until the last minute, and you scoffed and thought, "Ha! That won't be me! I plan things accordingly because I know how important this is, and just how much of my degree is riding on its success!” But alas, that's not what really happened is it? No, you went on a bender. Or perhaps decided to bunk that seminar you were sure no one was going to anyway. Now look where you are. But have no fear - if a girl from Brunel can do it in sixteen hours, and a kid from Warwick can do it in forty, you're good to go.
SHINY TOWN
Thurs 25 May – Sun 4 June www.brightonfringe.org
Deadlines
© Slawek Staszczuk
Brighton Fringe is excited to bring Shiny Town to the Royal Pavilion Gardens. This is a new addition to the abundance of wonderful things going on at the festival, however, this one is a little different to the others. There’ll be a pop-up town square in the gardens in front of the Pavilion, housing outdoor stages, an artificial lake and plenty of bars and food stalls to enjoy this idyllic urban atmosphere with a beautiful backdrop. During the day, Shiny Town will host plenty of family activities for old and young alike, such as hula-hooping workshops, cabaret, a hilarious rock roadshow by Bramble FM, and an interesting twist on sock puppets. By night, this immersive town will take on a whole new persona with some unique and edgy entertainment that is sure to amaze you. Arco is just one of the many acts performing, with stunning acrobatics and sky-high aerial performances. Trade Winds, a theatre performance by Brisbane-based theatre group Polytoxic, will take place on the artificial lake. This will entail a recreation of voyages, exchanges and meetings between different cultures across the sea, which is also a positive indication of Brighton's welcoming position on immigration and cultural diversity. For a one-off bank holiday event on Mon 29 May, Mother India 21st Century Remix will also be taking to the outdoor stage with an audio-visual musical masterpiece. This marks the 70th anniversary of the partition of India, as well as an acknowledgement of the Royal Pavilion's history as a hospital for Indian soldiers wounded in WW1. Don’t forget to visit Shiny Town for all these unmissable, magical events and more.
Tip one: Find out something unusual about your topic if it's starting to get boring. I know this is what they've been ramming down your throats every dissertation meeting, but try a different approach. Look at a modern take, or an older one. See if there's some Ted Talks on it or have a look at what JSTOR has to offer. Tip two: If the book you absolutely need from the library is ‘Library use only’, take pictures of quotes and copyright info on your phone! Tip three: Stave off the mental breakdown until one or two nights before the deadline - then pull an allnighter in the library. The panic will fuel you.

BY N AO M I DAV I S O N
Slaves are no strangers to Brighton. Guitarist Laurie moved down in 2016, tempting drummer Isaac to follow him. They played at The Corn Exchange for 2015’s Great Escape and at The Green Door Store for last year’s ‘Back In The Van’ tour, where they performed at only small venues across the country. Now they return to host their very own pier party for this year’s The Great Escape festival. Taking place on Thurs 18 May, theirs will be one of the festival’s new standalone Spotlight Shows. Slaves are Laurie Vincent and Isaac Holman, and they have always been a duo. “If there were, like, five of us it would be a fucking nightmare!” spouts Isaac. They both front the band - Isaac (perhaps the more natural frontman) stands up and drums, Laurie keeps it together with his raucous guitar, and the two share vocals. Forming in Tunbridge Wells back in 2012, they found success with the release of 2015’s debut album Are You Satisfied?. It reached number 8 in the UK album charts in its first week and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. They toured relentlessly and Isaac even ended up in hospital with a broken wrist and a dislocated shoulder. Slaves’ relentless work ethic and charisma is commendable. Follow up album Take Control was released last September and proved their durability and songwriting knack, entering the charts at number 6. It arguably has a more developed sound than the former but still retains their distinct rawness and blasé social commentary. The simple-to-chant, catchy lyrics seem to awaken both a sense of social consciousness and riotous fun among their fans. Slaves take their influence from a mixture of everyday life and silly little situations to “looking at everyone and thinking how wrong everything is”. When I ask what their latest single Spit It Out is all about, Isaac chortles that it’s quite literally a song about people with sour faces, “which look like they’re sucking on a sour sweet”. However, many
of their songs seem to be anti-establishment, but in a very accessible comedic way. Isaac says a lot of his lyrics come from Laurie’s rambling, from which he’ll extract a small catchphrase, and it’ll grow from there. It seems Laurie has some very passionate ideas - matched with Isaac’s pent-up energy, they have the perfect songwriting balance. For two young guys from Kent, I wonder where all the angst comes from. “I spent my whole school life being pissed off,” Laurie tells me, “I didn’t even break the rules. I was just bitter.” I can’t really imagine either of them in school to be honest, but they both seem to share a disdain for convention and social expectation. “I remember knowing really good musicians that just didn’t try, ‘cause they were like, ‘Well, we’re going to uni, so what’s the point?’” Like many artists, it seems it was not only the self-expression but also the escapism that attracted them to pick up instruments in the first place. “There are no rules. You create something out of nothing. No one tells you you have to do anything” Laurie adds. “Creativity is something you can’t harness.” Having met as teenagers on the Kent music circuit, the two formed an almost brotherly relationship. “I was a big fan of Isaac’s band and my band were supporting his. It’s one of those stories… I knew he had that star quality,” Laurie recalls. “We got drunk at another show and within a week we were in a band, and that was it.” This chemistry comes across in their shows and, unlike some artists, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of ego clash. Though both very different in personality, they just seem to bounce off each other. If they were too similar it just wouldn’t work. Despite being such a tight duo, they’re not averse to working with other musicians, “We both write songs with other people. I think collaboration’s really important. It keeps our own thing fresh,” says Laurie. Take Control was recorded
FROM PIER TO ETERNITY and produced by none other than Beastie Boy Mike D in his Malibu home, and the track The People That You Meet features Joel Amey from Wolf Alice on drums. They even guested on Chase & Status’ 2016 song Control, which has a Prodigy-esque feel to it. Slaves are buzzing for The Great Escape - their show will be one of this year’s highlights. “It feels great ‘cause it’s not been done before,” Isaac says. He plans to stay for the whole festival and is looking forward to hanging out and “sucking up the vibes.” The ever more grown up Laurie shares his concern about parking,
“
I’m not gonna be able to move my car all week…
”
Like many of us Laurie partly moved to Brighton due to property being so expensive in London. “We Laurie and wife, Emma were like ‘Let’s go live in Brighton!’ Really shotgun decision, but best move ever.” They certainly seem to fit Brighton’s aesthetic with their tattoos and vibrant fashion. But also it seems to be there in their outlook. We talk a lot about the lovely diverse bubble that is Brighton. As Laurie says, “It’s one of the most forwardthinking places you can live in England. When you go to other places you forget how open-minded it is here, and I like that” They tend to be labelled a punk band, but they’re certainly different from punk bands of the past. They’re adamant on doing their own thing. They don’t want to be pigeonholed, and I think that’s why they’ve done so well so far. When asked where they’ll go next, their air of spontaneity is confirmed. It’ll be “more heavy and more mature,” Isaac muses. He thinks Slaves’ next step will become more aggressive, to which Laurie replies,“More thought-out maybe. More in-depth songwriting, more structured.” There’s a sense they don’t know what they’ll do next. Slaves just go with their ideas - something refreshing to see from a more established act. In a time where even the indie music scene is tremendously manufactured, it’s this rawness and DIY attitude that makes Slaves such a breath of fresh air.

April 2017 saw the release of Brighton’s very own electro-R&B collective’s newest single, Loyal, following last year’s sell-out tour alongside Jeremy Loops. Now, in preparation for their headline show at London’s famous Old Blue Last on May 25th they’re bringing their gorgeously minimalist blend back to The Great Escape. And we couldn’t be more excited. Experimenting with ambitious textures and soulful songwriting, CROOX compose fresh and sincere tracks channeling the likes of SBTRKT, Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Addictively sultry and atmospheric, this four-piece have managed to craft a sound like no other. T H U R S 1 8 M AY - PAT T E R N S B A S E M E N T
DOUGLAS DARE 5.30 - 6PM
MOSA WILD 6.30 – 7PM
London-based singer-songwriter Douglas Dare’s sound is a wonderfully unique, bittersweet blend glimmering with hints and notes of his impressive selection of inspirations. From the likes of Portishead to Elliot Smith to James Blake, Douglas combines rich, haunting vocals with lyrics beautifully crafted from his own poetry and prose. Growing up with a mother who taught piano, he was inspired to compose music from a very young age. Combining acoustic instrumentation with glitchy electronics, his music is strikingly moody, distinctive and raw.
Mosa Wild’s roots lie in a project started when multiinstrumentalist Jim Rubaduka and guitarist Alex Stevens were still at school. Looking for fresh focus and direction, they found themselves a bassist and a drummer and went on to form the band they are today. Brimming with soul and emotion, these guys are comparable to The National or even a more gentle little brother of The Maccabees. Tender and heavy-hearted, Mosa Wild combine a hazy warmth through atmospheric keys and guitars to make for unforgettable songwriting prowess.

A fresh label deal signals big things for this local fourpiece, and it’ll be entirely justifiable. Their thundering brand of garage rock ticks all the right boxes. They’re dynamic, exciting and can write effortlessly catchy tunes by the bucket-load. The subject matter can be dark, the energy intense and the riffs, well, massive. As a live prospect, they’re one of the most intriguing and lively bands Brighton has thrown up in years. Plus, they’ve just come off tour with Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. Don’t expect there to be much room down the front!
Forcibly pushing their way on to a number of ‘Ones To Watch’ lists this year, this duo are absolutely living up to everyone’s expectations. Their recent EP Gut Me Like An Animal stands as a statement of intent, crammed with huge synths and rich vocals. It’s a delicious mix of pop sensibilities, lush R&B, and contrasting sonics. They’re getting support from Radio 1’s new music strand, and there’s some further festival dates promised. So, it could be a beautiful summer for these two and their delicious harmonies.

BIMM TGE
2017
Europe’s biggest showcase of new music and unsigned talent is here again. The artists have been booked - all 400+ of them - and the line-up announced, sounding the countdown to another highly-anticipated instalment of The Great Escape in our lovely city, Brighton. As always, BIMM will be out in full force at TGE with an extensive roster of new and exciting musicians, all of whom have been hand-picked from our diverse network of BIMM colleges. The BIMM musicians will be joining the likes of Slaves, Rejjie Snow, Rag’n’Bone Man and a host of other hotly-tipped artists from across the globe at a selection of 35 venues across Brighton, at both our Official Showcase (The Hope & Ruin on Thursday 18 May) and the Alternative Escape (The Hub on Saturday 20 May) trail. So, without further ado, we give you our rundown of every BIMM artist and band to feature at this year’s event, as well as previous instalments of The Great Escape, along with a little info about what you can expect.

Riding the current indie pop revival is BIMM Brighton’s very own Wild Front, who have been impressing festival crowds with their dreamy soundscapes and ambient synths. Hailing from nearby Southampton, the band will strike a chord with fans of Peace, Washed Out, and Two Door Cinema Club - check out new tracks Her and Views. Comparisons aside, the group are shaping a future for themselves and have certainly benefitted from having the creative freedom to self-produce in their own studio. Wild Front will play The Hope & Ruin at 3:15 pm on Thurs 18 May.
Bolstering BIMM Brighton’s assault of great bands are Penelope Isles who bring them an exhilarating blend of indie and psych fuzz. Arresting and original, the group’s blend of jangly melodies and compelling lyrics have earned them praise from DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Wax Music and more. “Their tracks are like your favourite sweets with shards of broken glass embedded in them,” reads the Isle of Man’s bio — an adage that certainly fits the bill. Check out their latest record Cut Your Hair and make your way to The Hub on Sat 20 May.
Call it thunder punk; call it anti-punk, it really doesn’t matter to Northern Ireland’s Frank & Beans - a riff-heavy two-piece with plenty to shout about. With a similar set-up to Royal Blood and Drenge, Frank & Beans are another band proving that you can make just as much noise with two people as you can five. The BIMM Brighton band have been gaining a reputation to be reckoned with, having become a familiar fixture on the city’s burgeoning music scene. As always, we’re expecting big things from their Alternative Escape debut which will take place at The Hub on Sat 20 May.

New kids on the block Hava have set tongues wagging around Brighton, following a host of shows and no less than three BIMM Showcases. With this in mind, it makes perfect sense than the BIMM Brighton group make their debut at TGE’s Alternative Escape in May. The band have cultivated and developed their unique sound in recent years, with influences ranging from trip-hop pioneers, Portishead to rock gods, Led Zeppelin. Save the date in your diary: Hava will hit The Hub on Saturday 20 May.
THE HUB (ALTERNATIVE)
SAT 20 MAY
Over to the West Country now and BIMM Bristol’s No Violet, another must-see feature on this year’s Alternative Escape line-up. Fusing alt-rock with grunge, the Bristol-born four-piece have crafted their sound from a blend of fuzzy guitars, pulsating drums and visceral vocals. Represented by renowned international booking agents, Electric Harmony, No Violet are going places at a pace that most new bands can only dream of. Catch them at The Hub on Sat 20 May.

SAT 20 MAY
Ferocious and sinister, DITZ bid to be the loudest band at The Great Escape is looking stronger by the day if their recent string of chaotic live shows is anything to go by. With a sound firmly cemented in noise rock, they are a world apart from the jingly-jangly indie sound of some of their BIMM Brighton counterparts. Described as sardonic and hailed by the music press as a band intent on wrecking your ear drums, DITZ are a band that commands attention and gets it. Catch them along with other BIMM acts at The Hub on Sat 20 May.

THURS 18 MAY
SAT 20 MAY
Singer-songwriter Maria Kelly’s star continues to shine brightly after a string of breathtaking and ‘bare-boned’ live performances across the UK and Ireland. Hailed by the music press and named on The Irish Times list of ‘50 people to watch in 2017’, Maria Kelly will fly the good flag for BIMM Dublin when at this year’s TGE.
Returning to the Alternative Escape after a hugely successful 2016 is indie rock’s answer to everything, BIMM Brighton’s FUR. The four-piece combine infectious, laidback grooves, guitar riffs and brilliant lyricism for a sound that’s reminiscent of Heavenly bands TOY and Hooton Tennis Club. We’re expecting big things of Fur following last year’s antics, which saw a devoted crowd turn out for what was one of the Alternative Escape’s most memorable sets. Fur will be playing at The Hub on Sat 20 May.
THE HUB (ALTERNATIVE) Haunting and unconventional, Swedish alt-rockers Junodef are set to make their first ever appearance at The Great Escape. Hailing from BIMM London, the atmospheric four-piece - who sing in both English and Swedish - will bring their downtempo blend of indie and shoegaze to Brighton’s shores next month.
Incidentally, their appearance at TGE will coincide with the release of their highlyanticipated new album Ocean, which is set for a May 20th release. Junodef will be at The Hub on Sat 20 May
HOPE & RUIN
Maria Kelly’s tales of heartbreak are delivered delicately and with ‘pin-drop’ vocal precision, which will no doubt provide a drop of serenity amid the chaos. A promising fixture on this year’s line-up, expect a few sneak peaks from Maria’s highly-anticipated debut EP. See Maria Kelly at The Hope & Ruin at 1:45pm on Thurs 18 May.
THE HUB (ALTERNATIVE)
We also had to mention some of the BIMM artists who have appeared at TGE in previous years that you may want to check out:
MOTHER ME
ROCKING HORSE CLUB
Describing themselves as the love children of Morrissey and The Cure’s Robert Smith, Mother Me’s exquisite mix of alt-folk and indie is as unique as it is captivating. Inspired by Alt-J, Radiohead and Grizzly Bear, Mother Me have taken the combination of moody lyrics with hauntingly beautiful guitar playing to great effect. The band have continued to impress over the last 12 months, following their spectacular debut at last year’s Alternative Escape. Watch this space! Listen to: Mother Me - Make Me Whole [www.motherme.bandcamp.com/releases]
If proof was needed that ‘mosh-inducing rock and roll’ isn’t dead, simply take one listen to former BIMM Brighton students, The Rocking Horse Club. The band brought last year’s Alternative Escape to its knees with a surging set of high energy rock and roll tracks, including hits from their debut EP We’ve Been The Rocking Horse Club. The hype surrounding this band has been welldeserved, earning them regular gigs and coveted festival slots across the UK and beyond. Missed last year’s event?

This must-see live, garage rock duo have generated much intrigue with their phenomenal sound which blends crashing drums with deafening guitar riffs. The rockers have impressed more than their share of critics after a host of awesome live shows, including two very special Sound City appearances in Seoul, South Korea! THE NEXT EPISODE
THE
KOOKS
To mark the tenth anniversary of the charttopping band, The Kooks are back and bigger than ever with their ‘Best Of’ UK tour. The tour will see them performing classic songs like Naïve and Brit award-nominated She Moves in Her Own Way, as well as songs recorded this year, straight from the studio. To kick start their long-awaited tour, The Kooks performed intimate gigs at The Prince Albert and The Haunt last month for their much-loved Brighton fans, since the boys have a special connection with our seaside town. The band formed in Brighton in 2004, with two band members, Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris, meeting at BIMM. After performing at Brighton Freebutt Festival in 2005, the band was scouted and signed to Virgin Records after being together just four months. I got to chat with the incredibly friendly (and funny) bassist, Peter Denton, who only started playing with the band a week before their five-time platinum album Inside In/Inside Out came out. “I just got to have the benefits without the hard work!” he chuckles. Denton went to a performing arts school in his hometown, Leeds. “I had to do drama and ballet, which was fun – but I don’t think I’ll ever be a ballet dancer,” he laughs, “I grew up with music. My dad’s a musician – he plays guitar. I guess if you’re around it, it is inevitably going to happen.” After catapulting to indie-pop fame before they could blink, it’s no surprise that after ten years of being together their UK tour has sold out. Selling out their biggest show to date at Alexandra Palace felt “incredible”. The last time The Kooks toured was after their album Listen. Following the 2015 tour, the band took some well-deserved time off. Denton, a father of two, noted “It was nice to spend time with family, you
know?”
BY S O F I G E R M A N O S The music scene in Brighton was one factor in The Kooks’ sensational success as they shot out of the woodworks alongside bands like Arctic Monkeys. Now, with over 100 million Spotify plays for one song, Peter reflects on how the industry has changed since they started out all those years ago. “It’s mad – one day you could be nobody, next you’re getting your record streamed a million times.” They’re keeping a watchful eye on social media to keep up with the ever-changing industry. With a fantastic outlook for the future, don’t expect this foursome to be twiddling their thumbs once the tour is over. They hope to release their new album in the new year, reminiscent of ‘old school’ Kooks, which you’ll hear on their recent single Be Who You Are. “It’s cool, man. It sounds amazing, and everyone is super excited. Every album we try out new things – sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. But that’s what keeps us on our toes and that’s the main thing, really!” Die hard fans will be excited to hear the music behind Be Who You Are has returned to the roots of guitar-based rock‘n’roll. The band describes the tour as a celebration of how long they’ve been together. “It feels flattering to know that people still have a lot of love for the band. We’re over the moon. We know what people want to hear so it should be good. Hopefully it will be a riot!” He finishes by telling me to “get a ticket for the tour!”, which I certainly will be doing. www.thekooks.com

DARRISON B Y S T U A R T R O LT
“That’s what we need. That’s the essence of Brighton, which has died out a little in the last ten years.” Darrison, MC extraordinaire and consummate man about town, is enthusing about the upcoming Funk The Format festival. We’re sat talking in the rather funky surroundings of Trafalgar Street’s Damage Hairdressers, because he’s been made a bona fide addition to the event’s line up. Last year he made something of an impromptu appearance, joining his heroes UK hip-hop legends, Rodney & Skitz. “I’m sat in backstage eating a burrito, and Rodney P is like: ‘Yeah Darrison! You’re coming up on the stage here now.’ I looked up and he’s hyping me up.” Impressed by his energy, charm and undisputed skills, the festival’s organisers asked him back to Hove Park on Sat 17 June. “To do things on my home turf is always a nice thing. I’m going to be doing a mixed set, with all the collaborations I’ve done.” Without a doubt there’s a wide gamut of absolute bangers to select from. Darrison has been in the game long enough to accumulate an impressive back-catalogue. Starting out with King Tafari Love Music Sound System, he’s arguably the first drum’n’bass/jungle MC to take the form to where it is now. As a member of Pressure Crew, he established the legendary Steppaz Convention nights at The Beachcomber - a truly old school seafront venue which was swallowed up by Shooshh forebear, The Honey Club. Early on he began developing a melodic style, standing in contrast to his more militant-sounding peers. Right now, Darrison is winding down a two-year hiatus from the D’n’B scene. The time away has seen him working through some personal issues, exploring different musical genres and filling his time with martial arts, skating and even a spot of gardening. He concedes being hurt several times damaged his faith in a scene he’d grown up with and took him to some dark places. “Everybody goes through shit. But if you’ve got your own problems, then you have to suffer more problems in the industry - where the fuck can you turn?” Wrestling with depression can adversely affect the creative process with his writing. Eventually all the turmoil may come out as lyrical honesty, but that’s not much help when you’re too sad to pick up a pen. Perhaps it’s brutally candid, but honesty and thoughtfulness are the tools of his trade. A shift in focus has seen his skills redeployed to different musical arenas. He’s tinkering more with production, creating some singular solo work packed with ‘80s influences, synths and quirky elements. There’s even the promise of a fully-fledged rap album to come, complete with skits, spoken word and a narrative. Having once made the mistake of becoming complacent, he’s
www.facebook.com/Darrison © www.photosbydavid.org staying fresh in the face of a constantly evolving music scene. Coming soon is an EP with House Of Virus, a fast-rising act signed to Marshall Jefferson’s Freakin909 house label. He’s also moved into reggae, recording sessions with Gussie P, and there’s still been a few choice D’n’B outings with Brazil’s L-Side and Mains from Brighton’s Motive Sessions night. “I’ve been taking this time out to work with a lot of local cats and up-and-coming people. I’m already established, so let me go out and put some fire to someone else.” There’s also spots with glitch-hop duo Krossbow (signed to Krafty Kuts’ label - Instant Vibes) and innovative D’n’B star, John B. There’s now even the prospect of a long-awaited album with long-time collaborator, Ed Solo. Incredibly, it’s been ten years since these two dropped their Random Acts Of Kindness LP, bearing a record artwork shot in the very salon we’re sat in. It’s apparently something of a gathering place for local celebrities. X Factor sex machine Frankie Cocozza is cheerily catching up with Darrison, whilst waiting for a post-grooming lift home, and veteran DJ Billy Nasty runs a record shop downstairs. Darrison himself is proudly showing everyone his cool new cap from Brett Sclif. Relaxing in a barber chair, he leans forwards only when emphasising a point or breaking into song. Both things occur quite regularly. A moving target to anyone trying to pigeonhole him, Darrison has perpetually shifted stance, moving between political, conscious, mischievous, reality and soulful. “Sometimes to be in the middle doesn’t always do you good favours in life. Because people want to be able to put you in a bracket, they want to know whose fucking side you’re on. ‘What team is he bowling for?’ I’ve never been that guy...” Neatly classifiable, or not, he’s gearing up for a hectic summer especially his show at Funk The Format. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Hove Park, this friendly one-day music and arts bash packs in a heady blend of soul, reggae, Latin, jazz, funk, disco, D’n’B and hip-hop. For 2017 the event will bring performances from Goldie and the Heritage Orchestra Ensemble, Norman Jay MBE, The Nextmen and Neon Saints Brass Band, who will all make this summer event unmissable. “Last year it was interesting. In the middle of Hove, to hear drum’n’bass and hard hip-hop banging out with black people and white people everywhere. It’s lovely, man.” Perhaps that’s all he wants – to see music bringing people together. Darrison forms part of the awesome Funk The Format line up when it comes to Hove Park on Sat 17 June. You can also catch his skills with Artificial Intelligence when they play Motive Sessions at The Arch on Fri 9 June.

Straight out of New Orleans, the group make authentic brass sounds and mix them with jazz and funk for feel-good rhythms. Their recent album On The Spotincludes relaxed tracks where you can hear laughter over the trumpets. After a difficult time following the deaths of four original band members, Hurricane Katrina was a turning point for the band when the group were all evacuated away from each other to different parts of the country. Hot off the press of their new album announcement this year, the Canadian rock band Japandroids will be performing in Brighton (as well as other places) after three long years out of the spotlight. The band shot to stardom following the release of their debut album Post-Nothing in 2009, with music magazine SPIN naming it 2012’s album of the year. Using themselves as their biggest influence, the dynamic duo’s newest album, Near to the Wild Heart of Life, sees them expanding from their usual Japandroidsness and focusing more on the meaning of their lyrics rather than the sound of their music. With the band’s longing to be back on the stage, the show will undoubtedly be bursting with energy.

If getting to party hard whilst watching an incredible band is your thing, then look no further. Holding gigs in Land Rovers and passing around a communal rum flagon to the crowd is the norm for this wild band. The six-person British folk band have had raving reviews, touring the USA and UK (in which they supported Boy George) and performing at a number of festivals, including Bestival and Glastonbury. After releasing their recent album The Devil, The Heart, & The Fight last year, Skinny Lister are back on tour, which already has seven of ten shows sold out. After a debut sell-out tour last year, charttopping Canadian band Marianas Trench have announced they are coming back to Europe. Since their 2006 debut, Fix Me, the multi-platinum progressive pop band have excelled in their music, gathering multiple awards and number one videos along the way. Lead singer, Josh Ramsay, has also featured on other tracks with one gaining him a Grammy nomination for his involvement on the smash hit Call Me Maybe, by Carly Rae Jepsen. Kicking off in Bristol, the tour now finds itself in the intimate surroundings of The Haunt, making the experience just that extra bit special. The band will be showcasing all new material from their latest album, so be sure to get yourself down there.
The name may fool you into thinking they’re a substandard country band from Alabama, but this Brixton trio take country music and add an interesting twist. Alabama 3 are an acid house, country, electro-pop band, mixing in gospel and spoken word. They are known for their incredible live performances of their contrasting combination of styles and their humorous personalities add to the experience.

Made up of five members, they create psychedelic vibes and melodies that will whisk you away to a tropical island (all in your head, of course). Alabama 3 started out with the name ‘First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine’ and had just two members. They now have nine members, all of which have their own alias. The band rose to success when their track Woke Up This Morning was used for the opening titles of hit TV series The Sopranos.
After a successful sell-out event in Brighton, which saw all tickets bought in just one week, The Island Club are back for round two at The Haunt with their own club night. For the pocket-sized price of £5 a ticket, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t see this brilliant band.

With his music described as ‘endlessly engaging’, Brooklyn-born Jeff Rosenstock will be making his first appearance in the UK since his LP Worry, released in 2016. The intriguing blend of punk and rock, mixed together with lyrics of his own insecurities and anxieties, makes Jeff Rosenstock an important figure in modern punk. Fans of his music all agree that Rosenstock is one of their generation’s ‘greatest musical heroes’. Before his success, Jeff Rosenstock stood with the band Bomb the Music Industry!, which sold hand-created merchandise and self-recorded records, all sold for any price the customer could afford. Despite this, he still managed to tour the world. If that isn’t something to be amazed by then I don’t know what is.

Glaswegian alternative rock band, Twin Atlantic, have added a Brighton date to their highly-anticipated UK headline tour. Donned with heavy kohl eyeliner and brightly dyed hair, the band have taken the music industry by storm, securing the Radio 1 title ‘Hottest Record in the World’ for June along the way. Twin Atlantic managed to record their acclaimed album GLA in just six weeks and received a top review from NME. It is the rawest material out of their four albums, and the bands profile has continuously grown, which has seen them land major support slots with the likes of Biffy Clyro and Blink-182. This is a show that will have you head banging to the beat.

The delicate band name pairs with the gentle harmonies and blasts of deep brassy notes which will truly leave your ears ringing with delight. The musicians are well-experienced, with every type of instrument imaginable playing a part in their compositions. Formation of the band came about when members of two separate bands, the Lyrebirds and The Strange Death of Liberal England, came together. The New Faith are currently recording their debut LP, ready for release this year. For anyone who is a lover of new, interesting and experimental sounds, this will certainly appeal to you.

If you don’t know who Andrew Weatherall is, or why this is unmissable, you probably don’t deserve to know. At the other end of the party-starting spectrum, right now there’s a performance of John Cage’s Organ²/ASLSP taking place at St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany. A more ambient remix of Cage’s earlier ASLSP 1985, it started in 2001 and is scheduled to last 639 years, with the next note change planned for Sat 5 Sept, 2020. This is the exact opposite of how exciting Andrew Weatherall’s DJ sets can be. Support comes from the equally excellent Pablo Contraband and ex-Portishead star, Andy Smith. We told you this would be unmissable.
Manchester’s finest proponent of eclectic brilliance returns for an extra special ‘Extended’ session. Acclaimed for awesome releases on labels like Warp, Sirkus, Disorient, Blood & Fire, Mr Scruff comes alive once again. A champion crate-digger, he has rewritten the book on floor-filling – adding a sense of fun and plenty of love. He’ll be doing what he does best, cheekily spanning genres across a marathon set reggae, Latin, jazz, house, funk and bass music. The problem with putting labels on a performer like this is that it’ll trick you into what to expect… the only thing we can tell you is it will be friendly, upbeat and brilliant.
For those of you in need of clear, distinct and compelling house music, Patterns give you DJ Haus. One of the hardest working DJs on the scene unleashes a barrage of jackin' stompers in Brighton this month. This is going to be an evening of speaker to speaker bangers. He’s unafraid to play homage to the greats, but unwilling to compromise in his mission to provide dancefloors with great quality and LFOheavy dance music. He’s got a bulging back-catalogue, which encompasses the point at which garage, house, acid and bass all meet. It’s life-affirming stuff, and never more so than at 1am when the fancy footwork comes out to play.

BRIGHTON TAT TOO N O I T N E V N O C ISON BY N AO M I DAV
The annual Brighton Tattoo Convention takes place this month at Brighton Centre. Considered one of the world’s leading tattoo events, last year’s event was attended by more than 6,000 people, promoting independent talent and featuring over 300 of the very best British and international artists. Whether you’re a seasoned tattoo fanatic or a total newcomer, this year’s event will not disappoint. Brighton itself has some incredible tattoo artists, and 12 local studios will be represented by some of their top talent. Just a few local studios attending include 1770 Tattoo, Blue Dragon, Tiger Bones, Gilded Cage, Magnum Opus, Angelic Hell, Skinned Alive, Secret Society and The Tattoo Workshop.
Here are a few of our favourites: Set up in 1989, multi-award-winning studio Blue Dragon is the city’s oldest-running tattoo parlour. Sarah Lu can be found here with her uniquely complex stick and poke style. Striving to “combine beauty with a twist”, she creates her exquisite designs with absolutely no electricity - just a needle and a chopstick. Stick and poke is a fascinating technique originating thousands of years ago among tribes in parts of South America, Thailand and New Zealand. Over the last few years it has found a surge of popularity. Nestled in the heart of Kemptown, boutique studio Gilded Cage is home to tattoo artist Paco Casero. Known for his detailed watercolour style, he brings incredibly realistic sketches to life. Specialising in detailed portraits of people and animals he uses muted wash-like colours and shading to create beautiful pieces of art.
Another Brighton favourite, Magnum Opus, pride themselves in catering “for everyone’s tastes.” Resident artist Ollie Pinder has crafted his own contemporary and very accessible style. His work has an American feel, combining the bright and bold elements of traditional tattooing with more intricate finer lines. Think old school tattoos with a modern twist. Skin Candy co-founder Hollie Shannon blends ornate feminine designs with a dark and almost gothic twist. She and Lenny Parrott, who specialises in large-scale Japanesestyle pieces, set up shop in 2003 as a small high-quality parlour. Due to sheer demand they expanded in 2008 and are now one of the city’s most sought-after shops. Dotwork Damian from Skinned Alive has attracted worldwide recognition. Creating almost 3D designs, his work focuses on realism, taking inspiration from nature, geometry and architecture. Dotwork is a remarkable technique, considered one of the most intricate styles of tattooing, literally created dot-by-dot. He is a master of everything from discreet doodles to full-blown chest pieces. This is a weekend celebrating all things alternative - but there’s a niche for everyone. Alongside the tattoo stalls there will be live music and DJs, Q&As, exhibitions, ‘The Trip Out’ motorbike show and even a chance to get your hair cut by the fantastic local AONO Barbers. Now in its 10th year, the Brighton Tattoo Convention is a celebration of creativity and self-expression. This is a one-off opportunity to discover some of the world’s best tattoo artists all under one roof. Chat to them, get tattooed by them and discover new talent everywhere you turn.

Now the cold and rain is receding, it’s time again for Brighton Open Air Theatre to unveil a programme for the summer. Operating from May to September, this Dyke Park venue provides a unique space for local perfomers, schools and national touring productions. Although never shy of the adventurous, this year sees an increasingly diverse range of music, comedy, screenings and spoken word events, as well as a new patron in the form of Hove resident, Simon Evans. “I was very flattered, but didn’t really know what it meant,” he says with a chuckle. “I’m still not sure anyone knows what it means.” The reality is this critically acclaimed comedian and writer’s relationship with BOAT goes back to its formative days. He’d already been helping fundraising efforts before it was built, having known founder Adrian Bunting for a while. This association and his erstwhile role as a comedy ambassador for Hove makes him a good fit as patron. We’re having lunch in the welcoming surroundings of Café Plenty. Offstage, the received pronunciation is slightly softer and he’s evidentially more liberal-minded than audiences are led to believe. Despite finding himself with a theatre at his disposal, there’s no plans to start writing grandiose shows to place on the stage. “If there was one thing I’d be interested in doing up there, apart from stand-up, it would be a great space for improv. It allows you to use unusual spaces really well. You can be really inclusive.” In the absence of a four-act epic to stage at the award-winning, venue, he is producing a show which reveals his love of dogs. Barking! will be the UK’s first canine-friendly stand-up show. On Mon 18 June, Evans will team up with Zoe Lyons, Phil Jerrod and

their four-legged friends to raise money for the theatre. He’s certain it’ll be a unique event. “Those don’t come along often in stand-up – to my experience.” Television appearances, on shows like Comedy Roadshow and Live at the Apollo have seen him gently mocking his fellow Hove residents, but he’s been dialling back obscure local references in his act. “I think to make jokes about Brighton & Hove that the rest of the country enjoy, you have to over-simplify it hugely. Generalisations get laughs. If you’re writing a novel you can embroider the full tapestry. But with stand-up, it’s more like cartoons.” Brighton might be full of hen parties and old people are eternally pushing tartan shopping trollies around Hove, but there’s little comic value in delving further into the city’s eccentricities. “People have to know what you’re talking about,” he explains. “If you’re a refugee from Syria, and spent three weeks on a boat in the Mediterranean, then obviously no-one else has had that experience. But if you come on stage as a stand-up, and explain it was a bit like that geography field trip, where you went on that coach, got stuck on a motorway and there was no loo, then people will laugh. You can be interesting and people will listen, but to get a laugh there has to be recognition.” Evans freely admits stand-up can be quite frustrating. Sometimes you must bow to what it demands – cartoonish simplification and relatable material. For such a relaxed performer, he certainly has a forensic attitude to comedy. The material is evolving and he feels skilful enough to take more risks with his craft. “I think there’s some point, at which you’ve been doing it for a while, and
RELEASE THE HOUNDS you just feel like you’d like to move on slightly in terms of what you talk about.” As you expect in such interesting times, comedy is increasingly used to address politics and identity issues. It’s not a trend Evans would feel comfortable indulging in. “That’s all fine, but I don’t have anything to say about that. For all intents and purposes I am the enemy.” He disputes the power of stand-up to provide true insight in its analysis. You can discuss Brexit or Trump, but to extract big laughs from a drunken Friday night audience you’ll usually have to streamline and play to the lowest common denominator. “As Peter Cook said: ‘That’s the British way - to sink giggling into the sea.’ If it has any small tiny effect, it relieves a bit of tension and allows everyone’s anger to dissipate harmlessly – So the bad guys carry on what they’re doing.” It can even be counterproductive for comedians to get involved or to have their views taken seriously. In attempting to clarify why so many were alienated by the political process, Russell Brand arguably caused greater disengagement. “Be a clown and point out the hypocrisy on both sides by all means, but as soon as you go: ‘I think we should do this’ there are consequences. He was surprised by the speed at which the serious news establishment engaged with him.” The oversimplification which comedy relies upon isn’t an ideal medium for exploring the complex spectrum of political views. Not if you want the biggest laughs. He talks about his parents who, despite potentially cancelling each other’s votes, still took part in a democratic process they both valued. “Most people didn’t vote because they either genuinely couldn’t come to a strong conclusion or they couldn’t be bothered. That to an extent is Russell Brand’s legacy.” He argues that the EU represented a more left-wing influence in British politics as well as a sense of collectivism. Brexit could mean the failure of the Labour party as a realistic concern. Evans admits his wife says he’s unbearable when he hasn’t performed for a while, describing performing as being part of his ‘personal mental hyenine’. “The trouble is, because you’re a stand-up comedian and you’ve chosen that lifestyle, the flipside is you spend hours completely alone in some of the most unfunny scenarios imaginable.” Finishing his sandwich, he returns to talking about joke construction, pacing and the how to trigger irrational emotions as a comic form, equating punchline landing to driving home a sword. He offers comedy has evolved as a natural response to things we don’t understand and probably shouldn’t try to. But it’s the not knowing which can make things funny. “I like to play with that edge. You have to have a little bit of ambivalence, because that is what physically triggers laughter. There has to be a degree to which it’s not clear what you’re saying.”.
The Barking! dog-friendly stand-up show comes to Brighton Open Air Theatre on Mon 18 June. www.brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk

COSMIC WAVES
KEV MINNEY BY J E N N I F E R L E R O U X © Kenny McCracken
Having been blown away by the animation for his latest video Dark Stars, I keenly searched for independent singer/ songwriter Kev Minney at our meet in the North Laine pub. Perched with beers at the ready I was keen to learn more about the creative process behind the single. “After recording Dark Stars I had this visualisation of myself floating around in space, playing my guitar whilst looking for a lover.” Kev knew that there was more to the project then just sound. That illustration and animation would allow him to be more creative and complete the story. Besides, he couldn’t really afford to go to space to film the music video. “Music is art, it needs to be seen to get the full picture of the songs. It also makes the whole process a hell of a lot of fun.” Finding an animator wasn’t easy though. After six months of searching, Kev found Rich Hinchcliffe’s stunning animations for Rob’s Rocket and got in touch. “I was over the moon when he replied to my message saying that he loved the song and storyline.” Combining his passions for music, astronomy and art is all part of the creative process for Kev. Something that is abundantly clear when you watch the video. “Growing up, my brother John was always the one who was passionate about Astronomy, it was only recent years where I took interest.” Kev remembers watching NASA on live stream when they had found a new exoplanet in the summer of 2015. “The thought of billions of stars and planets in our Galaxy alone is mind boggling. So, from that point I took interest. I watched videos, read books and followed the space-celebs in the astronomy world.” The creative team behind all of the songs for Stories of the Sky are impressive to say the least, and thanks to an Arts Council grant awarded in 2016, he has been able to pay
every single artist involved. “So far, I have worked with 16 local musicians, 2 local artists, 4 videographers, a mercurynominated producer, masterer, and promoter. They have shaped the album to what it is today and have helped me develop as an artist.” While not all of his collaborators are Brighton based, Kev’s connections in the city definitely helped. “I love Brighton, I love the ambition here. I spend a lot of time in coffee shops chatting to friends about their projects and my own. It’s a constant source of inspiration.” Right from the beginning Kev teamed up with local artist Daniel Hansen. “I have always loved his work, its unique. He also shares a passion for astronomy, so he instantly understood the vision of this album.” The video for his new single Just Another Day (released 2nd May) was also created by Brighton video production company Wildstag Studio, and features local actor Jerome Ribot. Another Brighton artist Daniel Locke is also currently working on a video for his song ‘Can you feel it too?’, due to be released in September. All of the songs for Stories of the Sky will have their own creative entity, with strong narrative, alternate worlds and stunning artistry. While the music itself is important, Kev believes the visuals magnify the detail of the song and elevate the experience. “There’s a story that the artist sees when writing a song and it’s great to be able to put that across. The visual has a double impact when folks first listen to the songs. If they can see and hear it, they’ll probably feel it a little more too.” News: Just Another Day is now out on Spotify Event: Alternative Great Escape When: Fri 19 May at Cafe Plenty Visit: kevminney.com

“Before I got Parkinson’s, I was never interested in anybody who had Parkinson’s and hardly ever gave money to charity. But when you get something like this, it changes your whole view, of course.” I’m talking to Tim Andrews – a man who likes having his photo taken. And he’s turned a debilitating condition affecting his nervous system and a passion for photography into something rather wonderful. A partner at Surrey law firm, worsening Parkinson’s Disease forced him to retire in 2006. “When I retired, I was so thrilled to think I wouldn’t have any stress and could do all the things I wanted to do. But all these things were solitary occupations. What I missed was the contact with people”. The following year, he happened across a Time Out advertisement from photographer Graeme Montgomery, who was compiling a book of nudes featuring ordinary people. The idea intrigued Andrews, so he turned up at the studio. “He said he’d photograph the first hundred people that came through the door, and I happened to be number one. We spent the next two hours with him photographing me in the studio. It was such a good experience.” In the following weeks, two more similar sessions were advertised, which he also took part in. Then he thought no more about it all. A year later, he saw an advert in his local newspaper from a student who sought people with illnesses for her final year’s project. Further research revealed there were plenty of photographers looking for interesting models. The idea of being photographed by different people across the course of his illness began to take shape. Between 2007 and 2016 he posed for 425 sessions, getting his image captured by photographers as varied as Steve Bloom, Henrietta Bowden-Jones, Gemma Day, Rankin, Harry Borden, Jillian Edelstein, and Danielle Tunstall. Each brought their own flourishes to this expansive project. “It’s fascinating to see how many people have got a completely different view of the same person. It reminded me of when I went to a funeral, and the vicar said: ‘Each of you have got a memory of the person concerned. All those memories and viewpoints go together to make up what that person represents to the world.’ I realised that’s what happened with my project - it’s 425 views of the same person.” Ostensibly his life, body and condition have become a living work of art. Reading Andrews’ blog, you realise what was happened on in the shoots was inexorably tied to who he was and his experiences.
This relentless drive to capture his life even crossed over into some of his most vunerable moments. After the progression of his illness overtook the medication Andrews was prescribed, he underwent deep brain stimulation surgery. “While I was in there, I spoke to the anaesthetist the day before my operation and said ‘could somebody take a photo of me during the operation?’” Obligingly, the hospital’s official photographer came in and captured the project’s 300th image during the procedure. So, what did he learn about himself during the process? “I’m not quite as vain as I thought I might be. Each photographer has photographed me as they’ve seen me. Sometimes it’s been without any clothes on, and I’ve got a fat stomach, or I look a bit scrawny and old. That’s never worried me.” This sprawling project has also seen him making an appearance on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth, to raise money for Parkinson’s UK, giving talks and exhibiting some of his images. “I do have some favourites, obviously. But I can’t choose one. I’ve loved the shoots, and meeting these people has been the best thing about the whole project.” Now this show, Over the Hill: A Photographic Journey, comes to Brighton Fringe. Running from Fri 5 - Fri 26 May, at Hove’s Montefiore Hospital, this free event features 40 extracts from the project, the bulk of which have not been previously exhibited. Although the project ended last June, he is still being photographed, admittedly on a more ad-hoc basis. It’s an apt way to stay in contact with the people he’s met on this extraordinary journey. “I never thought I’d do anything like this in a million years. There’s one great photograph of me from early on. This student was doing a project on obsessive compulsive disorder, so she wanted to photograph me wearing pyjamas, as if I’d woken in the middle of the night and had to paint a wall. I was standing in her hallway, thinking ‘Who would have thought two years ago, when I was sitting at a desk in my solicitor’s office, that I’d be standing in a hallway in Bethnal Green, wearing pyjamas and painting a wall?’ It’s the most weird thing.” Tim Andrews’ Over the Hill: A Photographic Journey comes to, Hove’s Montefiore Hospital on Fri 5 - Fri 26 May, as part of Brighton Fringe.

Theatre company In Bed With My Brother are now out partying with their step-father. Well almost. Members Nora Alexander, Dora Lyn and Kat Cory have turned the halcyon days of rave culture into a unique stage show. Three women in white overalls and a talking light bulb take the audience back to (arguably) the last great British youth movement. It started with over 60 hours of conversations, taped in the pub with Lyn’s step dad, Ian. “He asked us to make a show about his life,” says Nora Alexander. “He wanted it to be a 12-part drama from start to finish with a child actor playing him at 12.” Listening back to these tapes, they realised the best time to reflect on this life was when he was the same age as them. This was during the late 80s and he was in the middle of the illegal rave movement. “Everything he told us about it – the music, dancing and the ethics and anti-political movement that came from the acid house scene – We thought ‘is this something we’re missing now?’” The biggest cultural revolution since the 60s, the rave scene caused a huge shift in British society and left a legacy you’ll find throughout contemporary media, art and even legislation. Its growth was exponential, developing via word of mouth in the space of a single summer. Kids were deserting the nightclubs, expensive, gaudy and often violent environments, instead heading to warehouses, disused factories and fields to dance the weekend away. Come the end of 1988, many raves were boasting over 20,000 revellers a night, all of them eager to hear machine-made music and feel euphoric. The trio’s show, We Are Ian, conveys some of the excitement felt by these huge crowds, using clever choreography, eager biscuit consumption, and a great soundtrack. “Ian gave us about 30 or 40 of his favourite tracks of the era. We worked with some DJs and a sound collective, listening to the build of certain songs. We knew the show would need a house music build, so it would have climaxes and repetition. We pulled out all the things that house music has and applied these to the show.” It makes for a unique and mesmerising experience, and now this surreal award-winning show is heading south. Performing at the Komedia on Weds 31 May - Thurs 1 June, it takes the highs and lows of a very British movement to Brighton Fringe. Rave combined the pulsing beats of disco, the can-do attitude of punk and the non-stop hedonism of Northern Soul. It also proved to be the first British social movement to truly bring people together, regardless of ethnicity, background, or sexual preference. Obviously, the intense empathy caused by taking Ecstasy had its part to play. “What intrigued us about the 80s, was that Ian and quite a few of his generation have this viewpoint that we have nothing now. They did have that simplicity of ‘We can all get together and be anti-political’, whereas now we’re
doing it differently. We’re just a lot more self-reflective as a generation.” The rave scene’s drug use, lawlessness and a general disregard for politeness offered plenty of outrage for the UK’s indignant media. A generation were hearing Margaret Thatcher’s insistence there was ‘no such thing as society’ and instead trying to create their own. The Government stepped into clamp down on these weekend offenders, and so changed a movement which was once concerned about hedonism into something more anti-establishment. Police brutality, the Criminal Justice Act, gun-crime, and commercialism would eventually bring the scene crashing down. It’s leading lights now occupy themselves with noble pursuits like embezzlement and right-wing blogging, but for the party-goers themselves there is a spirit which refuses to die. Like many people, Ian believes the next generation don’t know how to enjoy themselves. “I don’t think any generation has it worse or better. But I think we are a lot more scared of things, like the internet or that we’re on our own. We are a community and we are doing quite a lot of political activism, our generation is using current technologies, music, and art to combat our time’s woes.” It’s a reflection on a scene which had good and bad aspects. Living outside of the law could draw you into the company of unsavoury people, and hanging around in dirty old warehouses with no toilets wasn’t a particularly healthy pastime. “You have festivals now, where people want a special experience. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s not springing up so much – it’s more kind of organised.” Now 30 years on and, as usual, our culture is reassessing the past and building upon certain elements. Modern pop music is full of 80s rave noises, and the imagery it spawned still lives on. We Are Ian makes use of the period’s rich documentation, blending mime and multimedia to glimpse into the past. “We’re quite an image-overloaded generation. Now something only has to flash up and you understand what’s going on. I’m quite interested in our attention spans now.” The show won a Brighton Fringe award for excellence whilst up at Edinburgh, an apt recognition of a genuinely unique way to explore modern social history. Reviewers and audiences have been similarly excited. “We didn’t expect it to go down as well as it has. I think it just hits the right combination of things people enjoy. It’s not traditional theatre, it’s not dance and it’s not clowning. It’s accessible for people, and they were really gripped by ‘Ian’ and the music.”

S W E E T V E N U E S AT BRIGHTON FRINGE 2017 For Brighton Fringe 2017, Sweet Venues will be running five venues, hosting a total of 102 events, with nearly 600 performances throughout the month.
Highlights from their programme this year include Trainspotting, Philip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke, Richard III (a one-woman show), and Protect and Survive. Trainspotting is an award-winning 5-star production which has enjoyed sold out shows at Edinburgh Fringe, in London, and beyond. The Guardian selected it as one of their must-see shows at Adelaide Fringe earlier this year. Philip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke received a host of 4 and 5-star reviews at Edinburgh Fringe last year, and has the seal of approval from Mr Pullman himself. It’s suitable for families with older children, but equally enjoyable from a purely adult perspective too. One-woman show Richard III won the coveted Broadway Baby Bobby Award at Edinburgh Fringe 2015, and also scooped all the awards at the Prague Fringe the same year. It has since toured to New York, London, and beyond, receiving critical acclaim wherever it goes. Protect and Survive is inspired by the 1984 BBC film Threads, a searing representation of the after-effects of nuclear war on the regular citizens of the UK. With recent developments between the US and Syria, this new production feels chillingly relevant to the current military position, and is surely not to be missed. Sweet Venues are also proud to be hosting five out of the ten shows selected by the Brighton Fringe to be a part of

their flagship WINDOW scheme, which showcases highquality shows which are considered ready to tour. These shows are Fall of Duty, Network Diagnostics, Shell Shock, The Forecast, and Wet Bread. Other highlights include work from a range of local artists, such as Griffin & Jones: Slapdash Magic, SpokeEasy, Aidan Goatley, Fannytasticals, Odjo: King of the Ocean, Meebles Get the Show on the Road, Model Organisms, and So You Say. Sweet Venues are also thrilled to be welcoming back a few past companies who won some of the awards in 2016, including Patrick Sandford’s new show Blooming; an exploration into what constitutes ‘happiness’. Blooming follows on from Sandford’s multi-award-winning show Groomed last year. "We are all delighted here at Sweet Venues to be returning to Brighton Fringe with a tremendous programme of work from across all genres and all borders,” said Sweet Venues’ Artistic Director, JD Henshaw. “With a huge increase in the number of productions we have to offer at England's largest arts festival, the whole team here at Sweet are just itching to get all the amazing audiences in to share the experience. Throughout all of May (and that first slice of June), we are ready to share the very best that our fantastic local and global performers have to offer to everyone. Whether it's your first or hundred and first show in Brighton, Sweet Venues and the Brighton Fringe have the experience for you!" www.sweetvenues.com

Dividing his time between Tokyo and London, Katsura Sunshine performs Rakugo, a whopping 400-year-old Japanese tradition of comic story telling. The “drop dead funny” one-man show, which was a sell-out at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, incorporates hilarious monologue with traditional stories. Originally from Canada, Katsura’s journey has been interesting to say the least. After studying classics in Toronto, Japan was his next stop to work as an instructor of English Language. It was here he was accepted as an apprentice to a Great Rakugo Master, earning him his bright name. He is no stranger to the stage, showcasing his unique art on Broadway and the West End, whilst being only the second Western Rakugo storyteller in the history of Japan. Ever.
Joe Orton’s deadly serious comedy begins with a young man telling Joyce and Mike that he’s just looking for a place to stay, but we gradually realise he’s got sex, violence, and revenge on his mind. Opening the door to Wilson sets in motion a tale where sordid secrets are revealed and lives destroyed. Prostitution, incest, blackmail, murder and watching ‘The Sound of Music’, where does the depravity end? This rare production of Orton’s 1960s classic marks the 50th anniversary of his tragic death. The superb cast includes the award-winning Kiki Kendrick, National Theatre player, Pádraig Lynch and the brilliant young actor, Elliott Rogers. Playing at the Lantern Theatre, during Fringe, it’s sexy, funny and profoundly twisted.

Gabriel quits his job in heaven to play jazz in New Orleans, while a vampire eyes the audience for his next snack. This is an intimate and engaging cabaret journey by Nigel Osner through a lifetime of yearning, featuring original songs and stories. A tremendously talented and exquisitely entertaining performer, actor, lyricist and writer, Osner now brings Angel To Vampire! to Brighton after its acclaimed debut at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.” It’s packed with marvellously dry humour and plenty of quirky characters, both male and female. There are also fangs, angel wings and sequins! “A show of angelic bite, Angel to Vampire! taps into a still pumping vein of light entertainment, injecting in some marvelous modern wit” The Grumpy Gay Critic.
Not to be confused with video game Call of Duty, this new performance by award-winning theatre company Behind the Lines is about four people being brought together by war, song, reality and escapism. Set a century apart, one side of this interesting story is in 1916 and the other is 100 years later.
Brighton’s long running, smash-hit satirical comedy show with a mouth watering mash up of an election and festival special combined with an Albion promotion celebration thrown in. This much loved local company, led by Brighton fringe award winner Mark Brailsford, (The Lad Himself, Hanover the Musical) is a must see for the fringe. Written by a 30 strong team of writers, this edition will feature regular characters from Fux News (Anne Anchor & Chad Vallay) German comedy counterparts, Das Treason Speilen Schau (Wolfy unt Claudy) and of course the best Donald Trump impression in the business. Add a soupçon of Brexit, a looming general election and the hilarious local parody songs for which the company is renowned and the scene is set for a night of vintage Treason.
MARLBOROUGH THEATRE A variety mash-up of circus superstars, Spiegeltent legends and the hottest acts of this year's Brighton Fringe. Presented by your favourite Aussie acrobats, the boys from Head First. With a rotating cast each night, different fringe artist guests get to showcase their best, weirdest and most hilarious talents, backed up by the incredible acrobatics and comedy of the Head First Acrobats. Written 54 years ago, Alfie feels as relevant today as it did way back during the sexual revolution. Alfie loves women, apparently, in the same way as a pussy-grabbing Donald Trump does. And women love them both back - apparently. This stylish production revisits Bill Naughton's classic play of sexual politics - when women were 'birds' and 'asking for it'. But are things so very different now? Directed by Janette Eddisford, and produced by Daniel Finlay, the show features authentic vintage costumes (all to be auctioned off at the end of this run) and dazzling performances from Steve Chusak, Cerys Knighton, Sharon Drain, Sascha Harman and Murray Simon. Its original script adapts a darker tone than previous big screen outings, promising no gimmicks, no feminist slant and no holds barred.

Deep in The Heat of Me, is an hourlong warming show telling the captivating tale of Janet, a middle-aged housewife, who meets the woman of her dreams on holiday. The lesbian love story is told through video projections, monologue and music derived from the Rat Pack hits. It touches on different themes, such as loneliness and sexuality, whilst keeping it full of laughter. Alison Child and Rosie Wakley believe in English writer Diana Souhami’s words, “acceptance can’t happen without openness, and we should all try to speak out in our own way”, which is what this theatre company have done through their plays.

Just as the title suggests, these heartfelt comedies are about love in the older age. The performance brings two short but sweet plays, both telling different stories. The Romance of the Century is about a once captivating couple awaiting a royal guest for a cup of tea. Pint-Sized Plays competition winner, The Weatherman, sees two elderly men reminiscing about old loves (as much as they can remember!). Close Quarter Productions, the company behind the two shows, started off in Brighton in 2011. The success of their first Brighton show meant it was then shown at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London the following year. This show, as well as other past productions, has 4 and 5-star reviews from major newspapers – you won’t be disappointed!

Magic with a naughty twist. Tony Roberts is known for performing his magic card tricks in a storytelling way, alongside jokes which may leave you blushing. Described as a “modernday Houdini”, Australian-born Tony has performed in Covent Garden, where many magicians impress the crowd with their talent, leading to him becoming an international street performer. Starting his career path off as a chef, Tony didn’t start performing full time until he was 40. Award-winning Tony also has a marvellous magic show just as good as the other, but this time it’s suitable for adults AND kids. Cutting down his usual cheekiness for a family-friendly show (which is new for Brighton Fringe!), this will include his highly-skilled tricks that will leave your little one speechless.
Using Familia de la Noche’s hilarious mix of clowning, puppetry, music and shadowplay, The Greatest Liar in all the World has enchanted audiences aged 8 to 108 with a story of extraordinary encounters, curious characters and lost love. Following the story of The Liar, a world-weary mentalist act who has reached the end of his tether and threatens to end it all. His company of glamorous and not so glamorous assistants manage to distract him from his imminent demise and convince him to tell the story of his infamous origins. A darkly comic sequel to Pinocchio, The Greatest Liar in all the World takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride through the life of the man who used to be a little wooden boy.

THE POWER OF THE ARTS TO C R E AT E E M PAT H Y BY N AO M I DAV I S O N

Kate Tempest has often spoken very passionately about incorporating the arts into daily life and using them to bring people together and to generate empathy. This year’s Brighton Festival theme ‘Everyday Epic’ is about celebrating the things that are often overlooked. “It is extremely important to become aware of the narratives that we are a part of, the narratives that we subscribe to and the narratives that we want to change.” The creative arts are often seen as a way of escaping the everyday, but Tempest sees the beauty and the excitement of them. She believes everyone has a story to tell and that it’s important to embrace differences and reflect on others’ experiences. “The routine of survival is epic but it is this very routine that numbs us.” As the festivals’ guest director this year, Tempest hopes the shows and performances will encapsulate this theme. THEY/ONLAR is a multi-screen video installation by Ipek Duben (pictured). Making its UK debut, it runs on Sat 8 April - Mon 29 May at Fabrica. The film explores themes of otherness within Turkish society, centring on ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality. Told through the stories of several individuals it is an honest, behind the scenes portrayal of the misconceptions and discrimination faced by many. Duben has worked with similar themes before, and in exploring Turkish society. Liz Whitehead director at Fabrica believes the film is very relevant “given the current political wave.” She hopes people will find their own individual responses to the film and that it will allow viewers to see similarities in the stories so they can better understand Turkish and Islamic society. “Maybe the labels and the levels of discrimination are different, but the experiences of exclusion and powerlessness are easily understood.” Produced by Peter Hunter, In Their Shoes is a spoken word project and ‘poem trail’. Running from Mon 7 - Sun 14 May at various specially crafted listening spots around the city. The commissioned poets are Issa Loyaan Farrah, Hong Dam, Sea Sharp, Connor Byrne and Helen Seymour. All with vastly different backgrounds and experiences, they all explore otherness and emotion across mental and physical
health, sexuality, transgender experience and the refugee experience. In addition to the trail there will be a night at All Saints Church on Sun 7 May, featuring live performances from the five poets, plus local poet Tommy Sissons, who writes from his perspective growing up as a young man in modern Britain. Hunter believes, “It is important for people to hear about these experiences directly from those who have first-hand knowledge, poetry has the ability to creatively communicate more about the emotional impact of these experiences than simply describing them.” He hopes the project will give people a greater understanding of what it is like to be considered an outsider by the mainstream, and the daily struggles quietly faced by many. The internationally acclaimed Vélo Théatre returns to Brighton to debut their unique new piece of object theatre, A Handful of People. Taking place at The Brighthelm Centre from Fri 26 - Sun 28 May, the show explores “the importance of the little things.” Director Charlot Lemoine says audience members will be encouraged to separate from whom they arrive with in order “to make a new community in a sense”. He hopes to bring people together by placing the audience in a central role. Pre-recorded videos and audio will also be played featuring a range of people talking about what they believe happiness is. Lemoine hopes the show will get people to unite and look around them, empathising with those in less comfortable situations and realising that happiness can be simply achieved. Tempest believes it is important to see “somebody else’s story” in order to alter our own perspectives and to take a moment to look at our lives from the outside. It is all too easy to become trapped by the news, politics and beliefs we are constantly immersed in. Given the current political climate and the nature of the digital world, her message is a powerful one. These shows and projects along with the vast array of others will be sure to insight debates, alter perspectives and celebrate diversity. www.brightonfestival.org

ONCE UPON A TIME…
S TO R Y T E L L I N G AT B R I G H TO N F E ST I VA L
Brighton Festival is back, bringing us its annual dose of inventive music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film and more. Art is a wonderful medium to convey many aspects of life to others - storytelling being one of them. This year there will be tales told by many different people in different ways. The Gabriels (pictured) is just one of the fascinating plays to premier as part of the festival. It is a three-part series following the lives of an American family during last year’s US election - one that will go down in history. The family are celebrating, remembering and waiting for the world to change. Tony awardwinning director and playwright of The Gabriels, Richard Nelson, says of his work: “I hope an audience will feel like a fly on the wall, overhearing these conversations and finding something that is both unique and very human. No one in these plays is trying to convince anyone of anything; there is simply the need to talk and listen.” He also mentions the topic of storytelling in our society today: “Storytelling is how we learn about others. We learn about each other, our confusions, contradictions, ambiguities and so forth via stories told. We also gain, for a moment, a sense of some control in our lives, having turned something into a story.” Hungry, What Did You Expect? and Women of a Certain Age can be seen as individual plays, or you can get a bundle to see all three together in one sitting on Sat 20 - Sun 21 and Sat 27 May. Amongst the storytellers will be The Furrow Collective, a young folk quartet, who through their musical talent, move through stories to supernatural ballads. They will be collaborating with Anna & Elizabeth. This duo, with their love of Appalachian roots music, explain the topic of how they tell their story: “Multimedia has always been part of our collaboration, so at our performances we use music, the spoken word, visual art, usually in the form of ‘crankies’, a long-illustrated scroll of paper or fabric, set in shadow box and cranked in time with words or music and dance and choreography.” Coming to The Spire on Mon 15 May, these stories are based around music from the mountains up and down the east coast of the US and the traditions surrounding their culture. This unique and unusual technique of storytelling will be one for all the senses and not just a story, but an experience. No Dogs, No Indians, premiering at The Spire on Weds 17 Thurs 18 May, brings another aspect of storytelling to the festival. This is a tale of three intertwining stories that explore the effects and legacy of the British in India, written by acclaimed poet and playwright, Siddhartha Bose. Four actors will play multiple characters across three time periods: the 1930s, the late 1970s, as well as 2017. The story will delve through these decades from young revolutionaries taking an attack on an all-whites club in Chittagong to a man returning to his home country, but not

as he knows it: New India. The play is loosely drawn around the Indian Independence Movement as well as the unfortunate and little-known story of Pritilata Waddedar, the female Bengali revolutionary nationalist. These characters tell a story on a raw subject, outlining real cultural issues that have taken place in history all the way to the current day. Nabokov, a cross art form company, are working with guest director Kate Tempest to bring Brighton a remarkable experience throughout the last weekend of May (26-28). Storytelling Army will be popping up around the city to share their individual stories. With a spirited mix of all kinds of people from different corners of Brighton, they share moments that matter most to them. The theme is ‘Everyday Epic’, so it’s all about celebrating the small achievements of the everyday, such as someone having their first day of paid work, or maybe even just getting out of bed in the morning. The army will be expressing each of their own personal stories through spoken word, song, monologue or film. It is known in Brighton that there are many unfortunate issues going on in terms of drug use, homelessness and vulnerably housed people. This army is compiled of people who have faced some of these issues and more - people whose voices should be not only heard, but listened to. One aim of the whole Army is to integrate art into life itself, and Kate Tempest hopes to make art less exclusive and more social. A unique aspect of the Storytelling Army is that you do not have to find them - they will find you. You may be taken by surprise by these performances as they'll be taking place where you least expect; from the top deck of a bus to your local supermarket. Musician and theatre writer Dom Coyote and his dynamic multi-instrumentalist band The Bloodmoneys bring Songs for the End of the World to Theatre Royal on Tues 16 May. This unique story presents to us a near-future post-Brexit dystopian Britain in which many are awaiting Armageddon. Whilst some are preparing for the end, evil corporation New Global Inc. are exploiting suffering and vulnerable citizens. When the long-awaited apocalypse arrives, astronaut Jim Walters is left suspended in orbit, broadcasting his songs for the end of the world back to few remaining survivors on silent Earth. The band, with a hint of Ziggy Stardust and 1950s rock’n’roll, sits on the line between gig and theatre with performers appearing as both musicians and characters. With the story's delicious portrayal of futuristic disaster combined with music, writer Dom Coyote describes it as: “It's like going to a gig in a parallel universe... a band playing their hearts out for the end of the world, and it's never been more relevant as the incredible political events of the last year unfold before our eyes." www.brightonfestival.org

THURS 27 – SUN 30 JULY
Having won the UK Festival Award for Best Innovation, Standon Calling returns for it's 12th year. The boutique music festival set in the luscious Hertfordshire countryside will be continuing with its usual imaginative themes - with previous years presenting motifs of Gods and Monsters, Running Away from the Circus, and Space. The festival, stretching over four days, will have some contemporary names such as Slaves, Clean Bandit and Laura Mvula, as well as some old favourites including Gary Numan, KT Tunstall and Grace Jones. Music aside, there's tons more going on at this friendly festival with loads of family activities, a dog show, fancy dress (with prizes!), comedy shows and even a pool and hot tubs to relax in. LOVEBOX FRI 14 – SAT 15 JULY
THURS 20 – SUN 23 JULY
Sadly, 2017 is set to be Secret Garden Party's final year – but it’s guaranteed to be the ultimate year for the festival. The ‘Head Gardener' hopes the party will go out with a bang and celebrate all that the festival has done for outdoor events in the UK, and most importantly, what the festival-goers have done for the event itself. So the theme this year will be... YOU! Living in a celebrity, social media-obsessed society where we feel like we have to be anywhere else but here, at SGP you will be there. Gardeners can come to a place where everyone adores you, everyone knows your name and you are the star of the show. With a great atmosphere and plenty of arts and creativity all over the festival there will be so much fun and unique stuff to be a part of. The site has a man-made lake if you fancy a swim, or even just chilling by the water. There are also canoe transfers to the Lake Stage! You can pamper yourself with facials, yoga and meditation, or take part in the infamous annual paint fight. There will be fireworks, forest parties and even a naked rave for you eccentric types - or those who might have had one too many!
www.loveboxfestival.com
Lovebox is another festival taking place in Victoria Park - this modern and colourful festival has some big names this year with individualistic Frank Ocean, whose only visit to London on his European tour will be for Lovebox. There will also be favourites electronic duo Chase & Status, Jamie XX, Annie Mac and Solange. There's music for everyone with a mad mix of genres and artists packed into two days. Sharp’s Brewery will be continuing their summer road trip here, serving their classic Doom Bar as well as some other fancy new brews. Perfect if you fancy a cold pint in the sun. An array of hand-picked designers and traders will be selling some of their funky clothing at Pop Tart Boutique, and if it's aesthetics you’re concerned about, get yourself glittered up at The Parlour. If you couldn't care less about your festival look, there's a charity Disco Ball Golf and, of course, ping pong. If you're not ready for the fun to end when the festival comes to a close, there will be plenty of after-parties going on in the centre of Brighton, with Andy C, Dusky and other big names having performed at Concorde 2 and The Arch in previous years.

BAYWATCH MON 29 MAY Do you remember the lifeguard programme from the ‘90s that everyone was obsessed about? Well, we’re being treated to a remake of the classic show as a film starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. Just when we thought we wouldn't see the likes of overly-toned bodies running down white sandy beaches on our screens again, Seth Gordon made sure that wouldn't be the case. Matt (Efron) and Mitch (Johnson) are two mismatched lifeguards who don't see eye to eye - however, they have to work together to shut down a drug trafficking operation threatening the Bay. The film will have all the old characters - just with new faces. And a cameo from David Hasselhoff, of course.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES
FRI 7 APR
What’s better than four Pirates of the Caribbean films? Five Pirates of the Caribbean films… apparently. That’s right, Captain Jack Sparrow will be making a return to our screens. He’s in danger again from his old nemesis; Captain Salazar, who has escaped from the Devil's Triangle. Salazar is on a mission to kill every pirate at sea, and Captain Jack's only hope of survival is to find a legendary artefact - the Trident of Poseidon - which holds control over the seas. Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario are all set to ensure this long-winded saga is just as successful as the rest.
THE SECRET SCRIPTURE FRI 19 MAY Based on the book The Secret Scripture, this drama follows Roseanne McNulty and a diary of her stay in a mental hospital. She receives visits from a young psychologist, who shows a particular interest in the diary. This also details the events leading up to her stay in the institution, giving the audience more of a perspective towards mental illness and issues contributing towards it. The reading of her diary triggers flashbacks to her turbulent youth full of obsession and romance. Starring Rooney Mara (Carol), Theo James (Divergent), Aidan Turner and Eric Bana.

I LOVE DICK FRI 12 MAY / AMAZON PRIME Cheeky name aside, I Love Dick is a new series we’re really looking forward to. It’s loosely based on a novel known not least - as a feminist classic written in the late ‘90s. In this version we’ll be seeing the lovable Kevin Bacon as Dick, alongside a few other well-known faces. The narrative follows characters Chris and Sylvere as they arrive in Texas and the latter is offered a fellowship which will enable him to finish a book about the Holocaust. This is where they meet Dick. He not only taunts their imaginations, but affects their ideas about love, desire and monogamy.
TWIN PEAKS MON 22 MAY / SKY ATLANTIC Despite the last episode being aired over 25 years ago, this ‘90s classic is expected to have 38 names returning from the original show. So, existing fans may have to ignore the obvious ageing of some of the cast. Despite the plot being kept firmly under wraps, it does seem the series will be a hit if it follows its legendary cult predecessor. It’ll certainly contain some of its original surreal comedy along with crime, drama and the return of original protagonist FBI agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan. Old fan or fan-to-be, keep your eyes peeled for this one.
JAMESTOWN FRI 5 MAY / SKY 1 Set in the early 17th century, this drama comes from the makers of Downton Abbey. It follows British settlers who move to America and establish a community in the New World. Amongst them are three spirited women, who enter a male-dominated town which has been without women for ten years. Having had their unknown husbands-to-be pay for their passage across the ocean, Jocelyn, Verity and Alice are ambitious to start a new and improved life in the wilderness of Virginia. Despite facing brutal challenges and the dubious indigenous people of Jamestown, these three pioneers won’t let anything stop them on their adventure for a budding new way of life.
SENSE8 FRI 5 MAY / NETFLIX This sci-fi drama is back on for a second season, following eight people around the world who are telepathically connected to each other. They must try to survive being captured and killed by the people who see them as a threat to the world's order. Having been left with a dramatic ending on the previous season with the cast sailing off into the distance, the group are expected to face bigger threats than ever before. We do not know much more than this, but it’s definitely going to be raunchier - a highlight for many season one fans. If you're a fan of X-Men and all things sci-fi, give this one a watch.

Now if you're excited by the title of this game - hold your horses. This isn't the Prey video game that was announced all those years ago. Prey, formerly handled by Human Head, has now crossed over and been re-imagined by Arkane Studios. A sci-fi first person shooter, players will take on the role of Morgan Yu, the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever. But surprise, surprise… things haven't gone as planned. This is what happens when you mess with alien technology! Players awaken on the space station Talos I orbiting the moon in the year 2032, and yes, you guessed it: the station has been overrun with hostile aliens. Expect to use your own wits, weapons, and tools found on the station, as well as mind-bending abilities to survive.
2013's best fighting arcade game is back with Injustice 2 from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The sequel has kept much of the game mechanics the same - with some small improvements. Injustice 2 has a new feature, the 'Gear System’ a loot-dropping system that rewards players with costume pieces and equipment. These can be used to customise characters' appearances and modify their abilities and stats. More good news - most environmental attacks, which were completely unavoidable in the first Injustice game, can now be blocked. However, certain environmental attacks with large amounts of start up, such as throwing a car, will remain unblockable. The game will also include a new microtransaction system. Players can buy "Source Crystals" using real-world money to purchase cosmetic adjustments for fighters, such as premier skins and shaders, instead of waiting to obtain them through regular play.
RIME Grey Box Games FRI 26 MAY / PS4, XBOX ONE, PC
I hadn't heard of Rime until I saw the queue to play the game at EGX Rezzed this year. A third-person adventure and puzzle game developed by Tequila Works, this one is really getting gamers excited. In my humble opinion, developers have clearly recognised that with the success of similar style games such as The Last Guardian, mystery games with beautiful graphics are going to do well. Creative director Raúl Rubio referenced the animation of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke as just some of the game’s influences. Shipwrecked on an island and followed by their fox companion, players must explore and unlock the secrets hidden within ancient structures. Collectibles and secrets can be found throughout, giving you the opportunity to solve riddles and reveal the mystical history of the land.

PREY
First announced back in February 2016 as a Kickstarter campaign and fuelled by the power of the Unreal Engine 4, Battalion 1944 is a multiplayer first-person shooter set in WW2. This game is one of the first from studio Bulkhead Interactive, a small studio composed of former AAA developers. During the developers’ early announcements, players were assured the game would have dedicated servers while making use of certain anti-cheat measures. They also confirmed the online portion of the game would be heavily skill based and that any unlockables would not give a competitive edge to players.

different tastes and cuisine interests. In addition, everevolving food trends and broadening public knowledge of dietary conditions mean there are far more considerations to take than there was at your average music festival ten years ago.” How has the actual dining experience evolved at festivals? “It's less about greasy burgers and sharer plates of nachos loaded with puddles of indiscriminate flavour – the food people used to grab with the main intention of sobering up – and more about taking the time to really enjoy what you're eating. Chances are, you'll have a range of things to choose from that you know you'll probably love, as well as a selection of caterers offering you the chance to try a whole new type of cuisine for non-restaurant prices.” What does great food bring to the festival experience? “It turns a day of drinking and listening to music into a far more social experience. Gathering around a great plate - or plates - of food gives you a better chance to catch up with mates, chat about the bands or acts and make plans for the rest of the event. Areas in and around the food concessions are constantly buzzing with chatter and laughter, which perfectly complements the electric atmospheres closer to the main stages and arenas.” How difficult is it to scale up the number of servings when you’re cooking in a field? “Menus should be kept simple. Longer menus mean more choice, which means longer queuing times. That does not mean to say that quality is compromised – most outdoor catering equipment is better than the fixtures and fittings of average household kitchens. Traders should stick to one style but make their offerings very special.”
SPOILT FOR CHOICE How do you go about gathering together a balanced and innovative range of cuisine to present? “A lot of research and planning goes into ensuring variety, value for money and provenance. I personally taste pretty much every dish that's on offer at the events I curate and have confidence in all of my traders. I wouldn't dream of including a vendor that had not been properly reviewed and vetted.”

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOVE
HOVE PLACE BY H E N N A M A L I K ‘Food is life. Life is food.’ This is the mantra that Hove Place affirm, and in this they offer British charcuterie at its very best. In fact, it’s the largest selection of British charcuterie in the country! Located on First Avenue in the heart of Hove, this bistro pub aims for a stylish, relaxed dining experience with small plates and charcuterie. Head Chef Phil Bartley has built an amazing reputation for creating exquisite ever-changing menus showcasing the best sustainable, locally produced ingredients. He works with small artisan producers on the understanding that happy animals provide better produce. With an extensive selection of cask ales, Hove Place favour local brewers such as Harvey's, Dark Star and Brighton Bier Co. However, a hard day at work paired with bank holiday blues naturally led us to order two large glasses of wine. For myself, an Argentinian Malbec (£8.20 250ml), and for my dining partner a French Pinot Noir (£7.90 250ml). The wine list is divided into ‘Big and Bold’ and ‘Old World Classics’ - a pleasant little touch to accompany our choices. The menu also offers a selection of low-alcohol wines – another nice touch showing even those watching their booze have been taken into account. We began with one of Hove Place’s famous deli boards. At £5, the board consists of homemade breads and pickles, which you then load up from the huge selection of cheeses and charcuterie (£3 each). With such a fantastic assortment it was hard not to order everything. After much deliberation we chose delicious Sussex Charmer and Graceburn cheeses accompanied by Bath Chaps (smoked pigs’ cheeks) and Beer Sticks (spicy pork shoulder salami). The charcuterie suggestions recommended by our waiter were a big leap for me. I was a little reluctant to try the cheeks at first – but feeling brave, before I knew it I was dipping them into chutneys, pairing them with cheeses, tasting them with wine and having the time of my life.
Our beautifully presented small plates arrived shortly after. My dining companion chose chicken wings and gnocchi (£7), gouda and truffle macaroni cheese (£6) and triple cooked chips (£3). I opted for the wagyu mini burgers with duck ham (£8), smoked salmon cakes (£7) and asparagus and duck egg (£7). The table, overflowing with small, gorgeous looking portions was a sight to behold. Sharing everything, our standouts were the fancy, feel-good macaroni cheese, the super cute and super tasty mini burgers, and the delicious, citrussy oriental salmon cakes. Again, when it came to puddings, we were spoilt for choice. Our waiter suggested a selection of all puddings for two to share (£16). When the dish arrived it was so pretty, we didn’t want to touch it. Delicate, vibrant and incredibly professional looking, we agreed it wouldn’t look out of place in a top London restaurant. It consisted of a mango and passion fruit cream cheese mousse, a hazelnut and pistachio chocolate delice, a panna cotta with raspberry and white chocolate, and caramelised banana with peanut butter and salted caramel. Is your mouth watering yet? The fresh mango was wonderful and the milky way Quenelle topping the panna cotta was divine. Each element was so well thought out with fantastic colours and taste combinations – a truly wonderful dish to complete a truly wonderful meal. POSTO MAGNIFICO
EDENDUM BY H E N N A M A L I K
Edendum - the Latin word for eating. I have always affirmed the idea that food is for enjoying, for savouring, for loving. The simple pleasure of dining among good friends and good conversation, a glass of red in hand; a delicious meal, beautifully cooked, is matchless. Perfectly classic, 100% homemade Italian cooking is what Edendum is all about, and in that I trusted in co-owner Diego and his smiling team as they talked my dining partner and I through their menu. Edendum has a very classic and cosy vibe with a decidedly modern twist. Pastas and preserves line the walls on one side, glossy bottles of wines and spirits on the other. Their admirable philosophy painted on the wall for all to see adds to a truly candid feeling about the restaurant. Naturally we began with a glass of red wine each – all Italian and very well recommended – as we studied the menu. For myself, a glass of Sicilian Baglio Gibellina (£10.70 250ml), and for my partner, a Sangiovese from Umbria (£7.50 250ml). We began with the sharing starter of Gnocco Fritto Misto (£18). Now this, we loved. The board was packed beautifully with various meats and cheeses from all regions of Italy, as well as olives and deep-fried strips of pizza dough, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. The idea is to craft yourself a little pizza dough sandwich of sorts. From Gorgonzola to goat cheese, Mortadella to spicy Spianata salami, every assemblage tasted great, felt special and paired with the wine perfectly. We had so much fun tasting and talking about the different flavours; I can’t wait to have this one again. Moving onto our mains, my dining partner chose the Rib Eye con Mostarda (£18.90). The Mostarda di Cremona is Edendum’s star preserve – a tangy mustard-flavoured syrup made with candied fruit. The steak arrived sliced, with tiny flowers scattered delicately atop. I’ve never seen a steak served this way, and couldn’t help but coo over how lovely it looked. So when my own dinner arrived, the Polenta e Branzino (£14.90), I could barely contain myself.
My sea bass fillet, too, was sprinkled with flowers amidst capers, sundried tomatoes, and anchovies. Once we got over how pretty everything was, we got down to business and tucked in. By the time our plates were almost clean, we found ourselves fighting over chips to dip into the delectable Mostarda. I’m not much of a dessert kind of girl, however, Edendum impressed me here. I went for the Crème Brulée con sorbetto al frutto della passione (£7.90). It was an artistic sight to behold, and tasted just as wonderful. I especially loved the passion fruit sorbet, which was tangy and fresh. My chocoholic dining partner chose the Affogato al caffè (£5.90) – chocolate ice cream served in a latte glass with a couple of espresso shots. This espresso dessert was rich and smooth – a coffee lover’s dream. In true Italian style we enjoyed a wonderfully leisurely meal, sharing and discovering as we ate. It’s difficult to find fault in the satisfaction of knowing everything you’re eating is homemade and locally sourced. Edendum’s modern take on the Italian classics means that anyone can enjoy it. From gnocchi and hand-stretched pizza to steak and sea bass, with vegan options if desired, Edendum is mindful of all tastes. The way Diego and his team explained the elements of each dish really stood out for me. I enjoyed developing my knowledge of real, good food as I ate. Polished off with a post-dinner Limoncello (of course), this was the perfect wholesome, authentically Italian dining experience – I will most definitely be returning.

DELICIOUS AND CRUELTY-FREE
BY L U CY H A L L E T T One of my favourite things is finding something excellent somewhere unexpected. The other day, I was rummaging around my admittedly very messy bedroom and stumbled upon an unopened bottle of Malbec and a top I'd obviously purchased in a shopping frenzy and completely forgotten about. Resisting the urge to crack open the Malbec (it was only 4pm), I put the top on and did a very uncool victory dance around my lounge. This feeling of finding a hidden gem was replicated when I was invited down to vegan cafe The Green Kitchen on 8 Preston Road – a stone’s throw away from Preston Park. The green walls, wooden tables and floorboards create a cosy and intimate feel, and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of Pickle – possibly Brighton's happiest dog. In fact, you’re welcome to bring a friend in for her as The Green Kitchen is completely dog friendly. Their 100% vegan menu has a large and impressive all-day breakfast selection, along with sandwiches, toasties, kids’ meals, sides, and some pretty legendary burgers. The Green Kitchen have also recently joined Deliveroo, and are finding their breakfasts are doing a roaring trade, particularly on weekends. They've very sensibly realised it can be difficult to find a vegan Sunday lunch if you don't necessarily want to schlep all the way to the pub – so they've got one at a very cost-conscious £9 from midday on Sundays. I can’t turn down a good breakfast, so I was really intrigued to try an entirely vegan interpretation of a Full English Breakfast (£7.95). Being a greedy little so-and-so, I also opted for a side of pancakes, maple syrup and artisan bacon (£4.95). The breakfast arrived looking very appetising and certainly hearty as it consisted of sausage, artisan bacon, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, baked beans, scrambled tofu and toast. The sausage was high quality and herby, and the hash browns were the lovely kind – crunchy on the outside but soft and crumbly in the middle.
The mushrooms and tomatoes were cooked skilfully and seasoned nicely. The two items I was truly knocked out by were the bacon and scrambled tofu. The tofu looked almost exactly like scrambled eggs, and I could detect some ridiculously moreish spices running through it. The bacon actually looked pretty similar to 'regular' bacon and had a nice texture to it, along with a smoky flavour and a satisfying aftertaste. Feeling pretty full, but also remembering the vast levels of greed I’m able to summon at pretty much any part of the day, I cast my eyes upon the pancakes, maple syrup and bacon. What I found particularly impressive and somewhat magical was just quite how tall and fluffy the pancakes were whilst remaining completely animal product free. The syrup was drizzled underneath the pancakes as well as on top, so with the first bite the unctuous syrup dribbled out of the pancake and onto the plate. The pancakes themselves were flavoured with all sorts of gorgeous things, including cinnamon, and I have to say that although I’m usually very much against the 'sweet and savoury together' camp, the smokiness of the artisan bacon really complemented the sweetness of the pancakes. I was totally taken aback by just how satisfying The Green Kitchen’s food was, and also how I didn't feel like I was missing out on my usual meaty offering. Co-owners Catherine and Katie are the sort of people you immediately want to be friends with, and even if you walked into The Green Kitchen frowning, it would be impossible to leave without a smile. A WARM WELCOME
MILLER & C A R T E R Ordering steak off the menu has always been a bit hit and miss with me. Let me just say one thing – I love steak. Whether it’s a Sirloin steak slathered with peppercorn sauce or a Filet Mignon topped with moreish mushrooms, I’m far from a vegetarian. I’ve always been a medium-rare person and I’ve never understood how anyone can order a welldone steak – as my mum always says, “you may as well order a burger!”. As much as I enjoy eating out, you never really know if the chef will cook your steak how you like it (3 minutes on each side, please), or if they will hand you a brick disguised as a piece of meat. Unfortunately, it’s usually the latter. So, you’ll understand my happiness when I got a fantastic steak at Miller & Carter Steak House. Located on London Road, Patcham, it’s easily accessible with ample amounts of parking and easy bus routes (the number 5 if you’re wondering). Upon entering, you’re welcomed by an expensive looking interior with a recurring theme of a deep red. Red chairs, red carpet, red lights, which charmingly pairs with the black tables and long black sofa. The visible brick wall gives the place a modern look with an authentic American steakhouse vibe about it. Whether you’re 6 or 60, Miller and Carter is suitable for all from being on that crucial first date to dining with your family celebrating your mum’s 50th – even if you don’t eat meat! The wide variety of the menu offers meals such as a range of steak (obviously) and burgers, but also offers other things such as fish and pasta dishes and superfood salads, not to mention a range of starters and desserts. They also have a children’s menu for the teeny tots to enjoy. After browsing through the 12 different types of steak, I ended up choosing the T-Bone steak with creamy baked cheddar mushrooms (£5.75) to start, whilst my dining partner of choice ordered the sirloin steak with perfectly crisp salt and pepper calamari (£6.75) to start. “How would

you like your steak cooked?” Both medium-rare of course. The mammoth 16OZ T-Bone (£25.95) and the award-winning 12OZ Sirloin (£22.95) were both delicious. The prices are extremely reasonable, as Miller & Carter only sell the very best cuts of 30-day aged meat and I cannot stress enough how flavoursome our steaks were. The cattle, hand-picked for the restaurant, are all grass and grain fed on British and Irish farms, later being cooked by specially trained chefs who say that steak “is our profession, but it’s also our obsession”. The Miller & Carter staff were just as sweet as the Raspberry Crème Brulee (£5.25) we left dessert space for (also delicious). Our waitress, Amy Bending, was extremely polite and knowledgeable, helping us choose the best white wine to compliment our meals. The service was terrific and not too intrusive – you were left to enjoy your meal without a massive amount of interruption. We were intrigued by the lettuce addition with every dish - the ‘lettuce wedge’ that comes with every steak, is a large chunk of ice berg lettuce with a choice of 4 dressings to drizzle on top. However, Amy, our waitress, informed us it was adopted from American steakhouses and is much-loved by other diners. If you get to the end of your meal and you simply cannot move from the colossal amount of food you’ve consumed, you can crash at the Miller & Carter hotel. Whether it’s a short overnight stay or more, the accommodation is comfortable and relaxing, much like the restaurant. Miller & Carter is definitely one place in Brighton to check out and feel satisfyingly full!
